tests totally off base of what he teaches, goes on tangents on isolated material
No Comments
Very dry!! Likes to go off on tangents and hear himself talk. Hell awaits you
an alright teacher, considering the size of the class (140+), tests are rough
Has his PP files shared, tests are kinda rough

Tough grader, but willing to help if you come during office hours. Knows his chemistry!
Favors female students and assigned grades accordinly. A bit creepy.
Boring, Lectures dont pretain to tests or homework. Tests aren't like homework. If you already know how to do chemistry, take him but if you are here to learn it, don't bother you'll have to drop. He is creepy and disturbing.
he sux.. avoid having him. take the honors class. it is not harder and he doesn't teach it!!!
Hate him
As a first semester student, I thought the class was more difficult. He is a very nice person if you give him the chance. He is there to make you learn, not to spoonfeed you! You have to work in the class, but it isn't that bad.
He is an aweful teacher, enough sad
not good at all
Not nearly as bad as most people make him out to be. If you have trouble he's very helpful in his office hours.
Dr. Jircitano is friendly and helpful. In addition, his laboratory technique is perfect, making him a great lab instructor to learn from.
He is willing to help, and that is the only way that you are going to pass if you go and see him. His test SUCK, and his power points don't help at all. Get the tests from the semester before and you will be fine!
Sucks as a person and a teacher. Should be fired
He is by far THE WORST prof Ive ever had! He goes way toooo fast. Failed his class twice took the same class by a different prof (and diff university) and passed with an A! PSU Erie needs to have different profs teach, then see his section empty and fire him! HE SUCKS!
...(cntd from above) that you understand the problem completely. NOT a bad guy whatsoever, unless he senses that you're not putting your best foot forward in the class. YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK HARD, guarunteed you will learn your chemistry. Disregard these other comments, most, he is HARD BUT FAIR.
Absolutely the most knowledgeable chemistry professor at Behrend. His tests are HARD but very reasonable if you pay attention and thoroughly understand daily problems. I recommend ALWAYS checking your Daily Problem solution with him, even if you have the daily problem correct, he will make sure...
He was probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He talks like we are all advanced chemists. He makes absolutely no sense half the time and then gives you insane tests. Lets just say this class is not fun.
Worst teacher i've ever had in any field. Knows material well, doesn't care if we do. Should be fired.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! I agree, he should be fired, or retire or something! You better be ready to work your butt off for this class!
Sometimes the lab questions are difficult to understand because it doesn't correlate with the Chem12 class...but if you go to office hours, he will give hints on how to go about them. His lab procedure is great and he can answer any questions you have while working on a lab.
412W-Inorganic Chemistry: He is a hard prof. Very good at explaining when questions are asked. Do not take unless you are serious about chemistry...435-X-Ray: Awesome class!! See previous. 407: Boring class (NOT PROF), but gives any serious chemist knowledge of chemistry journals.
by far one of the easiest teachers at behrend; don't even bother coming to class, it's almost impossible not to get 100 on everything - really cool guy too
Tough prof, his tests are rough but he curves the final grade fairly generously. Lectures are incredibly boring and he doesn't do well at relating the material. Willing to help in office hours but not always effective at doing so. It's possible to do well in this class but you'll have to work hard at it.
The class is pretty tough, and the lectures aren't that helpful because he goes to fast. If you take this course with him then your definately going to need to study alot, and learn on your own.
Most of the reviews make him out to be a terrible professor. He loves teaching, and he seems to know everything about chemistry. If you have problems at all he is more than willing to help during office hours. Gives study guides and hints for each test to focus your studies as well. Lot's of work, but if you want to learn chem, go with him.
the class itself is not that bad, but he does not do examples in class even close to the daily problems and the exams are absolutely horrible. if you expect to get an A you will have to work your butt off for it...
The whole chemistry department at psuerie is HORRIBLE. They are you to fail students so it makes them look credible. The daily problems are out to screw your grade. I liked chemistry until penn state killed it
Spends more time doing experiments than actually teaching you what you need to know for the problems. If you're good at chemistry you'll be ahead of the game, but you won't learn very much from him. I found myself not able to stay away a large majority of the time. If you think you may struggle with chemistry, he won't make things any easier.
This guy loves chemistry
When only 2 students out of a large class finish a test on time plus 5 extra minutes of time it is statistically saying something about the length of the test. Numbers dont lie. Yet no curve. Unless you can speed through drawn out chemistry problems dont take him or youll bust your ass and get a C at best.
unfairest professor ive ever had
he loves chemistry but he's out to make sure you get a 'c' plus the tests are nearly impossible to finish. you'll understand chemistry to a point after having him as a teacher, but for majors where it has no point, the class is excessively hard. take anyone else
After taking him i see why everyone hates behrend chemisty
I want my money back. spent more time doing demos i've already seen in HS than time teaching then screws you on the tests
Very misunderstood prof. I knew 0 about chem before his class and managed a B+. Alot of work though. He is very helpful in office hours and will explain things very well if you actually go see him. You have to study alot for his exams. You will "everything" about chem when done with his class and thats what college is about - learning.

You WILL know alot about Chem when you are finished that's for sure. Hated his guts, but I learned more from him than any other chem prof. You will not finish his tests, just accept that going in. It's 25 questions that require 10 minutes each with a 55 minute time limit...
Everyone knows chemistry is a hard subject... but Dr. Jircitano makes it easier to understand. Even though class is kinda boring and the exams are difficult, Dr. Jircitano is always willing to help you. He gives you daily problems that help you understand what was just discussed in class.
He's a really good professor. He has a lot of enthusiasm for the subject and is very helpful in office hours. There will be nothing on the tests that was not covered in detail on the notes or on the daily problems he gives. If you have any interest in learning chemistry he is a really good professor to have for the subject.
GIVES DAILY PROBLEMS SO YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. THE PROBLEMS TAKE WAY TO LONG TO DO AND ARE ONLY WORTH 2 POINTS AND THAT IS IF YOU GET EVERYTHING EXACTLY CORRECT. TESTS ARE WAY TOO LONG. YOU WILL NEVER FINISH THEM. HE IS A JERK. AND WHEN GONE TO FOR HELP MADE YOU LOOK STUPID/ FEEL DUMBD!
TERRIBLE. After graduating from behrend I would recommend two professors be removed immediately. This professor is one of them. Terrible grading logic, scale, and class is worthless to non chemistry majors. What a waste of an entire semester worth of hard work.
Overall, the professor is pretty good. He is really nice about lab report and paper due dates; if you are unable to get the reports done by the due date, he will still accept them for full credit (the due date is only a guideline).
Probably the worst chemistry teacher I've ever had. For the prelabs, he gives you really stupid questions and they aren't very easy to answer. I had to do a lot of looking information up to find the answers. He grades pretty harsh too. STAY AWAY!!!
absolutely awful. Worst teacher I've had at any level of school, actually refused to talk to me for three weeks and would ignore any questions I had. Acted as if he was five years old. Does not teach any material at all and then wonders why everyone does so poorly on his exams. Stay away at all costs
He grades really tough, but if you need help he'll do his best to explain the material. He's also flexible with deadlines.
I understand why people think he's hard. I don't understand why people think he doesn't help. He's one of the MOST accessible professors on campus, he's in his office if he doesn't have a class. You can tell he has passion for this. Also, he'll give you points for going to see him for help and if he knows you're trying.
The guy knows his stuff and presents it very clearly. He is very helpful and will answer any question you have.
He is an absolutely wonderful prof. The class is not easy by any stretch of the imagination but if you work hard you will make it through. He is always in his office and will help you until you understand the material. He is very passionate about inorganic chemistry so that helps make the class very interesting.
His exams are tough, but overall, he is really helpful explaining the material. Go to his office hours, not only does he find a way to explain it more clearly, but he will help you get the answer in the daily problems. He loves teaching, and is really happy when students improve. If you're in a chem-intensive major, TAKE HIM!
He's not a bad teacher at all if you have any sort of head on your shoulders and can think on your own. He's memorized just about everything about the periodic table and the subjects he covers in class. I had him for 5 classes and there was never once he couldn't answer a question. He will help any time and stay late to make sure you understand.
pretty much didn't get along with some students was in this group of students and didn't do well. Confronted him but nothing changed. He knows what he is talking about but it is hard material, socially awkward and hard to talk to about in class problems. Will not take him again simple as that.
If youre willing to put in work, youll do well in this class, simple and plain. Dr J will always check your DP answers at his office, so take advantage. Yes his tests are long but they are almost identical to the review sheets, master them and you cannot go wrong. The final consists of questions straight off the first 3 exams.
Awful class. i hated every minute of it. I fell asleep because he is sooo boring. NEVER take his class.
He is EXTREMELY helpful. as long as you make an effort to go to him. he wont stop until you understand the material. tests are almost identical to study guides. He will go over your daily probs until they are right. You have to make an effort. He is one of the better teachers in PSB. He NEVER turns you away when you come for help. GREAT TEACHER
Good teacher. Keeps things simple. Powerpoints are sometimes hard to read because of clutter. Got an A because I went on the website like he said to and did all the review worksheets before the tests. I didn't do all the problems, just one of each topic until I got the concept. Average class, you get out what you put in.
Jircitano has got to be one of the easiest and most helpful chem profs there. If you go to his office hes almost always there and he is extremely helpful with anything. He basically does the daily problem at the end just with different numbers. Exams are difficultish but if you study the review sheets you can easily get a B in this class
Best professor I have ever had hands down. Loves teaching and helping students. Is always in his office and eager to help. You will know exactly what is on the exam if you do the daily problems and exam review sheets. Ignore all the bad reviews and take him! Those are just students who didn't study and then blame him for their bad grade.
hated this class. i'll give him credit, he tries. he is so incredibly boring, so you'll pass if you can stay awake. make sure you study before exams, theyre not something you can study the night before and get an A on
He is a very good teacher, and he's really passionate about chemistry. his presentations were really clear and he would help with the DPs if you go to his office. However, his test are EXTREMELY LONG, they are not that hard, they are just time/energy consuming. He gives study guides for exams, and would do an extra credit at the end of semester.
I am not the best at chem. Whenever I would go to him to ask for help (like he wanted us to do) he would look at me as if I am stupid and not answer my questions. It was a waste of time. The kid next to me could have the same exact work, but I would get a lower grade. I ended up dropping his class and taking it with another professor. Good luck!
The exams are super long and can be too tough to complete on time. Daily problems are every other day so if you have a busy schedule and are stuck you can't get help. He talks in a monotone voice and is pretty quiet so if you are in the back it's hard to hear him. He tells you useless information at the start and doesn't explain the important info
Great professor over all, will do anything in his power to help and makes his office hours work for any student. Nice guy, treat him with respect and he'll do the same. Tests are challenging, but very fair. Know the test review he gives, you'll ace the test. Text book wasn't used once (except for some values used in daily prodblems you can google).
Super cool professor, he is very intelligent. Go to his office hours and he will help you. It's amazing how much he loves Chemistry and how much he enjoys teaching it to his students. I would recommend this professor! He is hard, but you learn a lot and he's always there to help you. Nerdy professors are the best!
Ridiculous methodical grading. Received an F for writing a lab report that was six pages and had every requirement and more than he was asking for. Friend wrote a one page report and got an 85%. Tests are long and sometimes require more time than the class period. No extra time given.
He seems like a nice guy outside of class, that is the only positive feedback that i can give the man. For starters, he has an awful grading system. You can get the answer right, but if you dont do the problem exactly how he wants it done, then you will get no credit. You dont have nearly enough time to take the exams & his lectures are unclear.
Overall, Jircitano was a good teacher. For daily problems, he's usually clear on exactly what he wants for them, but there were a few where you might be a little confused. If you take notes and pay attention while doing the daily problems, you will get an A in the class. Tests were fairly easy, final was really easy. You don't need the book.
Really great professor for chem110. Willing to help with daily problems during his office hours. His review packets are pretty close to what you will see on an exam. He talks very softly so it may be hard to hear his lectures if you sit in the back of the room.
Great teacher, made me work hard for the semester ended up with an A. felt very accomplished at the end.
Yes, he makes you work hard and you must do well on tests because they are your only grades, but if you seek help outside of class you should have no difficulty. He was clear with his explanations and the daily problems help. I would have received a higher grade if I reached out to him more and if I knew there were few assignments in this class.
A really socially awkward guy but I swear you'll become fond of him by the end of the semester. Really has a passion for chemistry and is knowledgeable in his field. Exams are important as the are your only grade aside from daily problems. If you study DPs and practice exams you will pass. If you need help go to office hours as he is very helpful!
Grades the daily problems super hard, moves through material way too quickly, and makes the tests extremely difficult. Lectures are super boring
His lectures are so boring to listen to. It made me not want to be in class at all. His grading is very strict and if you do something your way, not his way, you will get graded hard. If you can pay attention to his lectures and do the exam reviews and homeworks, you should be fine.
Dr. J knows his stuff, but chemistry is a hard subject to learn. You have to put the work into the daily problems and study hard for the tests, but it's worth it for the good grade. If you go to him during office hours he will check your daily problems for you to make sure it is right. If you approach him for help he will help.
Dr. Alan Jircitano is an excellent Chemistry professor. He knows the subject extremely well. I took him for Chem 112. Chem 112 had a lot more difficult topics in it than the previous chemistry course. But he made it easier to understand. I recommend taking him if you can. He teaches General Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry.
Very smart guy,,, (or robot).Get ready to study. Very boring chem lectures every day. He tries really hard and he knows what he is talking about but what he is talking about and what we are tested on aren't always linear. If you are not a chem wiz, I suggest taking chem 108 with 110, if not, find a tutor or some smart friends.
Dr. Jircitano is exactly what you look for in a professor teaching a difficult subject. He is almost always available to answer questions, whether it be after class or in his office. Lectures are clear and concise, and he often states what to prepare for on exams. Still, the class gives what you put into it. Great professor overall.
Make sure you get your daily problems checked in his office hours, it will save you a lot of points on stupid mistakes. He will take off points for even the most minor mistake so being perfect is necessary to getting a perfect grade. Work hard and the class will turn out ok.
His lectures are extremely boring, but the homework and tests are fairly easy when compared to others.
He is very caring and really wants his students to succeed. HOWEVER, the lectures are boring and if you do not have a good attention span you doze off.
Dr. J is a great guy and an even better professor. His lectures give all of the information that you will need for the exams. Practice exams are provided for each exam and mirror the actual test pretty closely in difficulty. He is always available outside of class to check the daily problems and further explain concepts covered in class one on one.
The worst professor I have ever had, he is extremely unfair in his grading. Other professors teaching the same class have an average class grade that is a letter grade and a half higher. Because his was the last class to use the room, he made tests so long that they took 2 hours for half of the class to complete it. Avoid at any cost!!!!
To be quite honest, this is the worst professor I have taken to date. He is unhelpful, and if asked a question, will either not answer or make you feel inferior. CHEM 113 is a one-credit class. There is no reason to be spending 5-10 hours each week for a lab. I am not exaggerating when I say I consistently left lab on the verge of tears each week.
Jircitano is by far one of the best intro Chem professors. His class is easy, his tests are almost like his exam review guides. Do his daily problems, they help a lot (takes about 10 min). Don't print out his PowerPoints like he will say to do (unless you learn that way), its much better to write yourself; because some of his notes are left out.
Absolutely horrible professor. Worst experience of my life. Run while you still have the chance
Dr. J is a pretty good prof. His lectures tend to put students to sleep. He's basically deaf so good luck asking a question. If you want to do well on his exams, you'll have to study and do lots of review material. His "recitations" are helpful for practice but if you can test out of them, do it. Makes you calculate your grade with an excel sheet.
Make sure you do the daily problems.
Very knowledgeable about chem overall and seems like a good guy. The exams aren't too hard if you review using the study guide he gives.
Overall an easy and manageable intro to chem course. He is very polite, cordial, and patient with students. The exams can be quite lengthy and I've always been in a time crunch on them, but the questions are still doable. Be sure to do your daily problems and go to recitation because apart from exams, they are the only points you will get.
Did not explain things well. Was a very poor grader and found thing out of nothing
Make sure to check your daily problem with him to prevent losing easy points. We were only graded on the exams and daily problems, not much of anything else. Although he is a nice man he has the most monotone voice that will lull you to sleep. He also explains concepts very vaguely and you will most likely need to review after every class.
Chem 113 takes a lot of prep work outside of lab. Make sure you can make graphs in excel. Professor does give good feedback on pre/post labs and has clear expectations. He goes over pre labs before each lab, reviews the procedures, and is available for questions. Is exacting in his grading and has high standards. His class was okay
Dr. J is a good professor. You can tell he prepares well before his lectures. I especially like the recitation every week which he usually gives us problems to work on. Chem 110 is a big class, so it is really nice to be able to ask questions in recitations. Doing daily problems is important for the class because it accounts for a lot of points.
Dr. J's lectures are so boring. However, he provides the class with helpful material on his webpage, and his feedback on daily problems helps a lot. GO TO HIS RECITATIONS. His recitations helped me understand chemistry better than his lectures did. Overall, he was not my favorite, but he was still a decent professor.
He is a very tough grader and will tell you, they way to pass his class is to do exactly what he tells you, down to an abbreviation in the lab notes. while he is accessible outside of class it is frustrating to have to see him before turning in every assignment because he is such a hard grader.
Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss any lectures you will likely miss out on some key factor that will be needed for the daily problems or for exams, so I would advise you not to skip. He does not post his full slides anywhere, he posts some on his website but I would not rely only on those if you want to pass.
I would recommend him for lab. Though he doesn't use Canvas and you have to keep track of your own grade, it's honestly worth it. He's ready to answer questions, keep you on track, and does a lot of the prep in lab so you aren't there for an extra hour.
He was an alright professor. His classes were mainly going through slides in class. Participation was not a thing with him and good luck trying to understand him if you asked him something. It's better to go to tutoring because he basically repeats himself and doesn't actually help you understand that much. His grading is very heavy in exams & HW.
Homework is given through daily problems; these are often, in the beginning, not really off of lectures. Ranging difficulty. Professor is very interested in the subject, although he teaches off of slides. Even though there are reviews, there are often things not on there for the exams. Textbook is not needed or used through the course.
Alright professor. He assigns daily problems that are due at the begining of each class period. They are pretty similar problems that are given in exams but are VERY TOUGH and he does grade them harshly. The layout of his exams are awful and I didn't have much time to complete them and did horrible except for the final which I got a 85%.
Dr.J is an interesting professor to have. His lectures can be immensely boring. His class is only graded by daily problems and exams. His exams are not particularly tough, however he some times takes way more points off than is fair. Advice I was given was to take Halmi, many people I know took her and loved it. Overall, not bad but not great.
Be sure to do your daily problems and go to recitation. Recitation is based in attendance and a good opportunity to ask question. Overall an easy and manageable introductory chem course. He has slides in the background while he is lecturing which is a nice visual. He also prepares many experiments to show in relation to the section he is teaching.
Dr. J's class consists of 3 exams, 1 cumulative final, and a daily problem for every class. He does not put any grades online, but instead gives you a fidgety self grading calculator. His lectures are long and boring and often times I would get little to nothing from them. He is pretty old and doesn't speak clearly. He is kind, but shouldn't teach.
Dr. J has an interesting teaching style, though his lectures can be dry at times. The exams are fair, but the daily problem sets are quite challenging and harshly graded. unstuck study was helpful for practice and review alongside the textbook and recitations. Overall, not the easiest class, but manageable with diligent effort.
Dr. J was meh. -GO TO HIS RECITATIONS (they help to make his class much easier) -Cumulative final exam -Very exam heavy -daily problems due almost every single lecture -Does not use a microphone in lecture -DOES NOT PUT GRADES IN CANVAS (he will put overall grade top left of your exam or you will have to go to his office to request your grade)
He was super chill and always available for questions. There is a lot of prep work before the labs but if you have any questions on the pre or post labs just email him and he answers right away. This was my first chem lab but he was very accessible when I was confused about the labs. As long as you follow directions you'll be fine lol.
