i hate fin. but i've got no choice....stupid tax rule.....****ing surtax.....
get another book, textbook does a bad job at explaining tax rule!
Fair marker, and one of the better Finance profs at Ryerson
Excellent professor. Actually enjoys teaching.
He talks so slowly. Takes forever to make a point.
Very smart and always helpful...one of the better ones!
don't really like the course hate the text book but he teaches well
don't expect to learn anything in class; all b.s. - no, really.
i don't know what i'm doing, but don't think he does either
nice guy, horrible teacher
Lets just say I go to Anne Inglis's classes now!
Nice guy, doesn't like to teach. Not clear about cases!!
university is not supposed to be easy people, Kaplan is one of the best period!
CAN'T TEACH!, not helpful, socially inept
does too much theory instead of examples.
gave no help, afraid of giving answers away!
not helpful, confusing, does a lot of theory
very boring, lame jokes...
lectures are vague, useless, meant to be thought provoking but not.
Great Prof! Just read the text and listen to lectures, and you'll be fine!
Excellent Prof. Very organized, gives many handouts, very clear. Best Fin prof
Great Prof, people don't give him credit! Better than other FIN502 profs
Great Prof! Puts exams, old tests and solutions, what more do you want?!
The best! He'll explain carefully and the reuses test which are on the web!
One of the best finance prof at the school! Concise and gives old tests
The worst! I have no idea, why others think he good! He spases if you're late!
The only person who was able to make me A)understand Finance, and B) make it fun!!
NameTags...what r we grade 1, class participation is mandatory, even if u don't understand he calls on you, dones't explain well either.
This guy clearly cares about everyone of his students, he is very prepared.
Nice guy, very fair and respects his students. Something most don't do. Doesn't know material that well, as he is left scratching his head at the student questions. Overall, nice guy, he's run of the mill.
Awesome prof - but study your material, the mid term ain't easy!
I'm not the biggest fan of his teaching style in class, but he is a great help during his office hours. I'm not even in his 401 class, but he never hesitated to help me.
Lectures are pretty dry. Never really answers a question, just sort of dances around it. Overall, he gets the point across, just don't look for anything too exciting.
He wants to help...allways willing to answer anyones question...however what he teaches in class is rarely on the tests...and the tests are ****es. If you can learn out of the text book...he's your man.
Kaplan's problem is that he doesn't get to the point. He asks rhetorical questions and constantly tries to applies his fuzzy logic to answers. Problem is, whenever he does that nobody pays attention. Kaplan, what you need is KEEP TO THE POINT!
he looks like milhouse's dad. nice guy though
Very dry ethic class, everything is about "conflict of interest", but learning ethic in a business class IS THE BIGGEST "conflict of interest", this is a business world, who cares about ethic, if you want ethic, you better go to philos
Milhouse's dad can't teach. He's too boring and doesn't get to the point of his lectures.Doesn't assign what he wants us to read, but expects us to know based on the course outline (that he doesn't follow)-WTF is the exam going to be like???-ha
Good Prof because he brings speakers that offer real world advice to being successful.. I dont know anyothe prof that will go that extra mile for his students.. Im paraphrasing here, but I think he one of the best!!
I am gravely dissappointed at the way this professor is being rated by fellow students. He presents viable information in an organized manner. He shows passion and liking for his profession which clearly evident in his teachings . Thumbs up for me!
Why are students killing Kaplan? He is a great professor who truly cares about his job and the students. He updates his course every year with current events and arranges many guest speakers. He is very organized and tries his best the topics interes
Enough with the "Milhouse’s Dad" comments, grow up. This is about his teaching style. He is an excellent teacher who actually teaches! He updates his course, and incorporates current events & guest speakers into the curriculum. My best prof this s
He is the best! Does his job from heart. Always available for extra help. He actually cares if you understand the material and easy to follw his lecture. Midterms are exactly from his lecture, final might not be if it is suppled by the department.
I started went to his first class, he seems like a good prof. I still have 3 months with him.
So far so good.
He failed me by 1% and I was in his office after every class asking for help and with a tutor. I got a new teacher and an extremely better grade.
He is sooooo good ^^* - He uses powerpoint presentations which makes excellent summaries of his lectures in case you miss something he said. Much of the time he posts his presentation online for future download. He's very friendly and approachable. I love him! HE IS THE BEST~=)HAPPY NEW YEAR ALAN~!!
I think he is really good prof. and he knows what is he talking about and is very clear about the topic. but i think he might set exams really hard, and that will be a disadvantage. Watch OUT.!
does anybody ever wonder if the professors with good ratings come on ratemyprofessor.com and rate themselves? I was just wondering because it says in the past ratings that he was bad, but sudenly everyone thinks hes a good proff...
good guy, i had ayi last semester and failed badly. so far, alan makes even much more clearer. if you ayi, drop it and go with alan.
he puts me to sleep like counting sheep. doesn't tell u the format of his exams becos he believes it teaches us one of life's important lessons, when really all i want is to learn fin401! i don't believe in dropping courses but 4 alan i made an exception. hope another prof teaches this course soon!
midterm totally unrelated to covered material in class
WTF?! He brags about his stupid rating.. and he ends up being such a &%$*& i don't even wanna say! He's horrible! he makes me feel so dumb! he makes me want to quit school in general! Well, i guess he doesn't have a rating to brag about next sem!
this man shd get a medal... in trickery! don't bother studying 4 this course, what ur tested on doesn't come from the text or his class notes. 3 versions of midterm ranging from all multiple choice questions(MCQ) to 2/3 short answer(SA) and 1/3 MCQs. hope for the MCQs, get the SA and you're screwed.
I hope this guy is readin this sh*t. Doesnt tell us whats gonna be on the midterm and decides to put some questions on there that were never covered on the assigned questions, so u basically do all those for fun cuz dude decides he wants to "ready us for the real world"$500 gone, thanks big guy
Hey, this is more like it. Now the students are really rating the prof, no more him rating himself. THIS PROF IS TRULY HORRIBLE!!!
you can't pass an exam you can't study for, it's as simple as that. his exam isn't based on the textbook/notes/lectures, so don't bother studying. why such cruelty? because he wants to prepare you for THE REAL WORLD.
IF u wanna fail this course, take his class!worst prof ever and I'm not the only who thinks so! more than half of his class dropped the course, coz his tests are ridiculously hard and he doesn't even tell u what the format of the midterm is, so AVOID TAKIN HIS CLASS, UNLESS U REALLY REALLY HAVE TO!!
He is the worst prof I have ever had. He teaches stuff that is not on any test, you are going to fail his miserable tests regardless. Drop it now.
offers too little help too late.
Not as bad as everyone says. Tests are a bit hrd, but gives everyone an easy 10% on pop quizzes. So basically, u only need to earn 90% of your mark. There is no way you can fail this class
If anyone wants to waste $450, 13 weeks studying and lose your self confidence you should take Kaplan class because you would get everything you wanted. and as an added bonus you will most likely fail too.
Worst prof at Ryerson.
one of the worst profs at ryerson. doesn't explain material clearly. midterms and exams are based on material NOT taught to the class. EXTREMELY UNFAIR!!!! drop the class if you can, otherwise you're just wasting your time and money
Mid-term had questions on it with stuff we didn't even learn in class. He doesn't teach everything we have to know. Doesn't give examples that are past a basic level but exam has advanced questions
sucks
Mike Inglis was better than this.
Impossible Midterm.... studied my butt off for about a week for the final and barely passed the course.... lectures are no use...Good challenge if your up for it... THIS IS A WARNING!!!
The very few examples provided in class are not an accurate representation of the questions on the midterm. He puts on this caring act (weekly surveys, posting past midterms...), but don't be fooled. He takes pleasure in FAILING students. Bravo to the students who survived this class with him!
Professor Kaplan is a pretty good professor. Granted that he is tough and he does not go over everything assigned in the text. However, FIN401 is very much a self-study course and he makes himself available for help if required. Kaplan has some challenging exams and tests. Be sure to WORK HARD!!!
Explains very poorly. Classes are very badly run. Avoid if you can.
Every aspect of this class sucked, all because of him. Boring, meaningless, & useless classes. Only point of going was the pop-quizzes. Don't see how he thinks he teaches people when the class average was below 50%. "Prof Status: Still Teaching" --unfortunately...
I'm glad to see i'm not on my own with my opinions of this guy. I had to bail before the drop deadline cuz i had no choice. Also, get over your stupid rule about not sitting in the back rows of the auditorium, who cares if u think its too dark? No one but you. Frustration, argh
kaplan is the worst prof everrr..! no matter how much you study, there's a huge chance u'll fail the class..drop the class at once..his teaching method and grading is completely unfair!!
if you can take anyone else instead of him... DO IT. he gets a kick out of failing his class and isn't helpful in class.
Tough class. Knowledgeable prof. True academic. Work hard.
This class required a significant amount of work independently... homework & teaching yourself. Lectures are useful, very basic concepts are taught. Prof tried to help, however with large class, and a class of 700, he seemed to not care at the end of it all--I don't blame him.
this professor was unfair in his classes as he taught one thing and tested on another so be aware!!!!...my classes final average was 52%
His midterm was very hard I studied 24/7 for a week and I still did poorly. Half the class dropped the course so he made the final pretty easy.
the WORST FINANCE PROF....... EVER!!!!!!!!!
the class was pretty hard. wasn't too happy about my midterm mark, but after the final, my mark went up thanks to a more reasonable exam. cant really blame him - class was at 8:30 in the morning with hundreds of people.
DROP DROP DROP!
drop it fast cause kaplan's the worst prof you could possibly get
If you manage to pass the midterm, be prepared to work. If you think you can have an easy ride in this course, think again. I got lucky on the midterm, but most of my friends had to drop b/c they failed. STUDY like crazy. Final is easier than the midterm. Constant shouting matches in class with him. 800 people was far too many. Managed a 65%
Bad prof. Mike Inglis' chicken scratch is better than this. Kaplan actually lowered some peoples' marks after he issued our midterm grades because of his own error. He also has some strange adoration for "Shrek."
Firstly, FIN800 is a waste of time. Second, Kaplan is possibly the worst teacher i have had in university. He did not teach anything and wrote the most useless and stupid exam i have written. Kaplan is just not a good teacher. Oh yeahm, he is also very smug!
What a waste of time. He can't teach just rants on about whatever. Marks very unfarely on the assignment, people who had the worst presentation got the best mark, people who actually prepared and answeared questions did poorly. And don't get me started on the waste of time the exam was.
don't take this course
Kaplan is a good man. Very nice guy. Course is difficult. Exam is fair. He is helpful, does alot of practical examples. keeps the clas involved. Study though.
Guys,Believe me. It doesn't matter if he is a good Professor or not, but you will enentually kill your GPA if you go to his class. Because the size of the class is around 400 students and Kaplan can't handle it. Swith your section to a smaller class. Honestly I didn't understand what he was teaching. It is not Alan's mistake BUT OF THE UNIVERSITY.
He's not a bad teacher, I guess. But what got me is that this guy never bell-curves and the class avg was around 50%. He goes, I believe that students get what they deserve. WHATTT?!?!
He's a good guy, but i fell asleep in most of his classes. Too much theory and not enough examples and he doens't bell curve.
He asks problems he never solved in class.
He does not explain anything and most of what he talks about is not relevant and if it is, it is not clear
Hard course, bad teacher. He doesnt really explain the chapter and will put questions on the final based on his blabbering in class. Many of the questions on exams are not from any of the course material. Try and avoid him
No Comments
Worse prof ever! Does not teach anything, you'll have to learn everything on your own. Does not answer questions correctly. Mid term and final are really hard, even after days of studying hard core. Failure rate in his class was really high. He is out to get students, he does this for kicks. AVOID HIM!
very nice and understanding person. but not really a good prof. he doesn't teach much. the course is tough as it is and he doesn't make your life easier buy concentrating on problem solving. if you have the option, take the course with someone else. almost half his class fail both because the course is tough and because he can't teach. and just rea
I found that the lectures were not that helpful in solidifying the concepts in my head. The instructor has a "I don't know. May be yes.....may be no" way of lecturing. Be prepared to do a lot of work independently - be thorough.
KAPLAN MOVE OVER! IVE HAD IT WITH THIS GUY, MAKES THINGS MORE COMPLICATED THAN ITS SUPPOSE TO BE AND MAKES TESTS 100 TIMES MORE DIFFICULT THAN OTHER PROFS..THIS ISNT A WAY TO TEST UR INTELLIGENCE
Tough class. Make sure you read the chapter and do all the homework prior to class. Kaplan's lectures are good but only if you've read the material beforehand. Mid term was hard - final was a bit easier. Either way, be prepared to work hard!
His exams are based on his lectures.
Be a nice guy, work hard and be competant! Those are the keys to doing well in this course. If you want to learn, take Kaplan but be prepared to work. If you want an easy ride, take Macinnes. He is the best Finance prof at Ryerson, period.
He's a good Prof. You need to go to every Class though. Tests are based on guest Speakers and Newspaper articles. A LOT of reading for the final. The Final is closed book for Kaplan Vs open book for Mcinnes. If keep up with the readings in this course you will be fine. Just dont leave everything to last minute. Mcinnes is the easier route for sure.
If you want to learn, take Kaplan but if you want the easy ride, take Macinnes. I believe that all 4th years should take this course with Kaplan because of the knowledge and passion he has toward the topics in the course. He is a great Professor but you must be willing to work hard.....and be a nice guy!!
I was a 3rd year marketing student when i took this course...what was I thinking!!?? But you know, Kaplan isn't that bad; if you've taken an ethics class before, you'll be fine. I got an A. The final had a about 6 questions from the text; read group articles twice, and you'll be fine. Short answer questions were easy (what is corporate governance).
The worst prof for finance. Doesn't teach the material, only talks about theory, NO CALCULATIONS. Tests do not resemble textbook/lectures in any way. Avoid AVOID avoid AT ALLL COSTS!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Coming from someone who had a 3.5gpa before this class, this guy cannot a) teach, b) offer sufficient help when asked. His answers are so vague that you're often left more confused after asking for an explanation. I honestly believe he hurts Ryerson's reputation by continuing to teach FIN401 here.
A lot of people find Kaplan difficult, but I feel the opposite. If ease is determined by being rewarded for the amount of work you put in, then to me, this is an extremely easy course. Work hard and be rewarded with a professor and course that will open your mind to a lot of prevalent issues in business. Make sure you form a good team though!
Nice guy in class but ruthless when it comes to grading….he said he wasn’t a bad guy … ok AK… but I am going to make every effort till the last drop of blood in my body not to take him again…. Rest is upto you guys…
How to succeed in his class? Lyryx: dont forget to do them, he wont give second chance no matter what. It's worth 20% so be smart. Midterm: Dont wait till u get here, study as if you have a test for the chapter every class. Do the online/CD questions too. Quizes: if u do what i said already u should be fine, dont miss classes since u'll b missing
Kaplan is a blessing to have as a professor. You get to really learn a lot of real life stuff, and just as in real life you got to do the job you are intended to do. Very fair marker and very clear as to what to expect. By far one of the best profs at Ryerson. If you are looking to learn for your future/current job, then take Kaplan!
He's greatttt!! I took FIN401 with him and I did really good , go to his class , take note and listen to him carefully and at the end do the homework questions . You wont regret it ...
Nice guy, makes the class interesting. Has a good sense of humour and is good at explaining Finance in real world terms. Not so good on teaching Finance principles in the class though - you will need to practise the midterms, use the textbook and do the Lyryx labs. You ever have a question, he will sit in his office with you until you got it.
His midterm is ok, very similar to what he teaches in class and his examples but ALOT of theory questions, so u must still comprehend theory. Final was MUCH harder b/c of the fact that he doesn't write it and is written by head profs for all sections. Kaplan does not prepare you well for exams that are not written in his style, study the book alot.
Excelent prof, hard material. Go to class and study a lot
Guys.. READ THE EFFING TEXT. I don't know how the midterm avg was almost 50%, and the final avg was even lower. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE TEXT! DO PROBLEMS/OLD EXAMS! He provides past exams! It's not difficult and it's not that time consuming. the chapters are short... Great prof, though. makes everything clear and he responds to emails in a flash
The previous comments were pretty accurate. Mid-term is brutal (hint: study his lecture material for it)..final was much easier, straight from text book and old exams. All the FIN 401 profs are the same so doesn't really matter who you take it with.
If you are looking for an easy way out, you can always try everest college. Kaplan doesn't do as many problems as other profs b/c he wants you to apply ur knowledge, not blindy memorize how to answer questions. FIN401 has much more theory than FIN300, so read the book! Got an A in the course. "If ur gonna do something, do it right" put in an effort
So disappointed. Finance professors should be covering finance questions and not articles from financial post. He covers on avg. 3 questions from the text, so basically it's a self learning course. Professors like him should not be teaching finance.
Great prof.He relates fin.to what is going on in the real world. How else is finance useful to me w/o me knowing how or when I can apply it to my life?He gets the class participating,he covers the material but you have to put in your part too.His tests are reasonable.I did very well having no interest in fin or ever planned on taking it again.
did alright, but doesn't do his job. he is the principal writer of the final exam, yet his class average was 23/60. LOL! feel sorry for a lot of people in his class. take it with a different prof.
He uses real world examples to teach. He uses excel to teach problems, not helpful. He doesnt keep notes up on the board for very long so you must get them after class. He teaches to finance experts, if your are not an expert, you must teach yourself. If your finance backgroud is weak or you are looking for detailed instructions, avoid this prof
Ok guys. Disregard the previous comments because this time the final was BRUTAL. went from an 84 to a C+. and yes, the final avg was about a 40% i think? NOTHING from lyryx, NOTHING from the textbook. IT WAS F* HORRIBLE. wrote him an email about it and he didnt care. he wont ever bellcurve: its his rule. Go crazy have fun.. i sure didnt
I went from a 85% to a C because the final was extremely HARD ! This guy sucks at teaching and is not enthusiastic about it. You will fall asleep almost in all his class. First half of class he talks and talks and 2nd half you will take notes. His mid/final exams are nothing close to what you expect. enjoy
Course design for 401 doesn't make any sense. Bunch of scrambled data. There is no depth or structure. All some scrambled stuffs. I found the course outline is intense and covers a boneless stuff. I mean these is no proper instruction, no clear demonstration. All you may have bunch of scattered chapters, weird clueless maths and brain twisters.
this prof is absolutely brutal, nothing he teaches has anything to do with anything, if you have him, DO NOT bother going to class or switch classes if still possible, if not you are going to have to teach yourself everything and go to tutoring like i did. he does nothing to help you learn the material and everything possible to make u fail i got A
His exams are tough. He gives totally different questions from what he teaches in class.
Looks like Larry David and is about as helpful as our police force. Useless
USELESS PROF. He's very nice and he gives some good real-life examples that relate to the class material. HOWEVER, when it comes to preparing students for exams he is totally inept. One of the worse teachers I've ever had, GET OUT OF HIS CLASS if you have him, you'll learn more hitting your head on a rock and you'll save $600.
Alan Kaplan is a great prof. He's very helpful and always accessible esp. in the periods prior to midterms and the final. Classes are not boring thanks to real world examples and how he relates textbook material to today's world financial situation. Read the textbook prior to lectures though and study previous midterms/finals.
Great prof, always brings real world expamples to class, look over all his previous midterms/finals that he posts and you will do fine
The man is from the stone age and he teaches the course in a totally random manner. Going from one slide to a random article...
The WORST professor at Ryerson and maybe all of Canada! So old he forgets his thoughts in the middle of the sentence.Tests have nothing to do with textbook/lectures(study his sample tests on BB)Don't bother going to class at all-you can read the newspaper on your own.Kaplan you are useless-TIME TO RETIRE
stay away from this prof. tests r not frm his lectures or textbook. they r tricky n he's really bad. all the rotten ones come to rye to teach.
horrible!
HORRIBLE PROF, USELESS N VERY HARD EXAMS. take it with macinnes n exams will be really easy.
Horrible professor. Not only are his midterm and exams hard, he bases some midterm and exam questions off of lectures -- so if you missed a lecture, you're probably going to lose marks. Midterms and exams are hard as hell, so if you get him... make sure to transfer out ASAP
Got an A+ with moderate amount of work. Tests are fair. You obviously need to read the book in order to get a good mark in this course. Alan is a good professor and is certainly fair.
Make sure to go to all classes esp guest speaker days, at worst collect notes from classmates. Find a good group. I had the honour of working with a useless group. Kaplan marks fairly hard for the huge project. Take notes when he goes over both cases and articles. Classes are discussion based and sometimes hard to follow (not objective) Kaplansgood
I found Prof. Kaplan to be friendly and helpful if a bit quirky. He appreciates feedback. He tells stories like Woody Allen so they're unintentionally hilarious. However, I don't think his efforts to try to make you think about quantitative finance intuitively are helpful. Drill past exams, the textbook and Lyryx because exams are much the same.
I didn't find it easy to approach him. He is a NEGATIVE person. He is knowledgeable and when you ask questions he explains well. I liked him and yet i didn't like him.
His lecture method is very dry and boring. Teaches from the previous 6th edition when the latest 7th edition has been out for a couple of years which does not making any sense. He offers incomplete powerpoint slides on blackboard to induce you to come to his brutal lectures. Teaches his class in a very heavy theory based as a matter of fact style.
Dont listen to these people. Hes an awesome prof. He is always available for help, do the questions and readings before class and you will be fine
Great course, great prof. The course was very hands on with the cases and the content isn't too bad if you have a good grasp on previous corporate finance material. Fair marker, fair final. Would take Kaplan again.
Awesome prof! Cases are time consuming but engaging. I found myself learn more after this course. He replied emails really fast and was always available during office hours. Final was fair, make sure you do the practice tests.
If possible, take this class with another professor. Kaplan is a nice guy and very friendly, but he makes the class unnecessarily difficult. The exam was very stressful since you had to pass it to pass the course, and he tests from several different resources on it, pure memorizing. The project will end up hurting you unless you have a solid group.
Alan Kaplan seems like a nice guy, except his method of teaching was very confusing and difficult to follow. The textbooks were absolute useless when it came down to final exam. I wouldn't recommend taking Finance ethics with Alan Kaplan
The final was pretty brutal especially since you had to pass that to pass the class. It was very specific. Take it with someone else if you can. Other than that, have a solid group so that you could go in with a better mark.
He makes this class surprisingly difficult, his lectures dont seem to be very clear and then you have to take notes on guest speakers who discuss topics that have nothing to do with the course and you are expected to memorize all of it, the final is difficult because you must pass and there is a lot of very specific questions from the textbook
Alan has definitely elevated my interest in the field of managerial finance. He brings real-world examples to class and encourages us to apply course principles. I appreciate his style of teaching; instead of reiterating the textbook, he engages the class in thought-provoking discussions. Furthermore he makes the extra effort to learn our names - o
Run run run!!!!
Lectures arent all that boring but you have to attend some classes as he gives out random popquizes that count for 5% of your mark. But Things on the tests are straight from tutorials
Dr. Kaplan's class was a great opportunity to put theory to the test in this case study class. You do need to participate and do the work to make it worthwhile, but he avails himself for any questions you may have.
To be honest, Alan is quite the interesting prof. This course is definitely challenging, but he is always there to guide you. I was quite scared after reading a lot of the comments about his teaching style, but he is very knowledgeable. Overall, he is an effective prof; remember, it all depends on the level of effort YOU put into the course.
lot of work, not hard but if you fail the final you fail the course.
Professor Kaplan makes his lectures interesting and helps you understand the proper method for completing the cases, he wants you to succeed and that we all the learn the proper methods by the end of the term, he doesnt give any hints about what will be on the exam as he wants to make sure you study everything but the exam wasnt overly difficult
Do not make the mistake of not taking an active role in the cases because then you will get burned on the final as there is at least 40% of the questions based on the cases, and with the final being a must pass you need to make sure you know as much as you can, Professor Kaplan does do a good job at explaining the proper method for the cases though
If you know your FIN401 material well it will make this class easier. For the cases, you have to present your excel, memo and ppt the way he tells you to and be very clear, in order to get a good mark. If you took FIN631 doing excel will be easier. The final was based more on lectures, slides and cases rather than the textbook.
Had him as sub for Scott Anderson. He talks about irrelevant things and skims over his slides - events in the world but nothing about the course. You may like his stories and find him inspirational, but not during tests because you havnt learnt a thing. I prefer Anderson because he teach what you need to know and spend stories afterwards.
Although I did the practice finals, the textbook questions, as well as the case, do not count on the textbook type of questions nor the practice finals type of questions to be on the final. He gives good feedback, but he does not give any hints of what's going to be on the exam whatsoever. The final was brutal and unrelatable to the curriculum
Prof. Kaplan is one of my favourite Ryerson profs. The course itself has a heavy workload in terms of the bi-weekly cases, but the 15% Aplia is free marks. As long as you follow what he wants on the cases, you'll do great. As for the exam, past exams didn't really help me; but he did mention that he gives marks wherever he can.
Best FIN course. Bi-weekly cases are an amazing component of this course they take up ALOT of time - but you learn tons. Make sure to attend case review classes every other week as well. Prof was quick to respond to emails , final was based on cases. Did all of the q in book and midterms + was heavily involved in each case. Got an A+.
The course was based on case studies done in groups, make sure your group is strong. There isn't a whole lot that people haven't seen in FIN 401 before and having taken FIN 631 is an asset for this class. Alan does his best to explain the logic behind what is happening in equations to help students learn as well as drawing on real-world examples.
By far one of the worst finance profs of all time. Does not give any hints towards the final, and was completely blindsided even after doing all the questions in the book. Avoid at all costs.
Alan Kaplan is an bluntly honest professor. He demands nothing short of due diligence and hard work for his advanced corporate finance class. Very practical course as it is case based. Make sure to pick out a good group that can work hard or else you will fail your assignments. Fun and engaging for finance students. Not so much for others.
He is actually really really bad, doesnt even teach and for a class where a 67% is mandatory this guy does a horrible job at teaching content and explaining how to get answers
In my opinion, this prof is very vague and does not cover the relevant material in class, compared to other profs teaching the same class. He is miles away from other profs, and I have to end up going to a different section just to understand the material.
Alan Kaplan is a second to non professor. Very knowledgeable and compassionate about making sure students learn and engage in class. The course is very valuable as its assignments and projects replicate real world scenarios. It validated all the theory learnt from previous classes. The class is not easy but it is worth all the hard work!!!!!!!!!!
Okay firstly, that person above is straight lying. He does not know how to teach, doesn't know how to explain excel files, and especially is unfair. Told us to put our hand up if we were done out quiz, I did, and he did not take my quiz as well as many others and said our quiz does not count. I will escalate this issue but beware at all costs.
Alan is an amazing professor. Makes the lectures interesting and engaging. He is very kind and approachable. If you have questions or need feedback on assignments, he is available and gives good feedback. The class is not easy, but Alan makes it a good class.
Alan is there if you need help understanding how to do the problems. If you're lazy then sorry you won't do well.
If you have Alan , I'd strongly recommend you to ask him questions when you have ones. If you expect him to go over every single concept - don't, but rather talk to him after class if you didn't get something. Very knowledgeable professor and a nice person.
He's honestly a good professor but the key to succeeding in his class is to ask questions if you have any. He is more than happy to answer questions during class but he won't be thorough if no one seems to have any questions. There are "pop" quizzes every other week that are pretty simple if you just pay attention during that specific class.
He is fine. His lectures are fine and easy but his grading system is bad. Lots of assignments! Lots of presentations. He is a very very tough grader. He expects students to be at his level. Unfortunately, he never puts a full grade to anyone.
Very TOUGH grader I don't know why. You need to work A LOT for this course. He gives a lot of assignments and writings.
Very funny prof. His slides were very easy to understand because there is nothing on them. Good luck to whoever is taking his courses.
Professor Kaplan's way of teaching is not the typical "read slides then do some practice questions". He teaches in a way that incorporates real life and textbook information. His slides are used for his own benefit, not the students. Better take down notes, exams are based on what he said during class. Still enjoyed his lectures.
Not a great professor at all. Very unclear about what he expected. The things taught in class were the bare minimum of things asked for in the cases. Did not follow textbook. His exam is very lecture based and not fair at all. One of the MC asked: What was the sentence that came after a paragraph, in the case we had done (we did 5 cases...).
For your group project- pick a good group because you will need it. The cases were fairly difficult and you will need to go outside the case to pass. The cases are marked pretty hard. The final exam was awful- MC about stuff he talks about in class-Pay attention in class and take lots of notes. Content is review of AFF310 but taken up a few notches
Prof Kaplan is super knowledgeable in his lectures, and he will help you whenever you ask him. He explains concepts where it is easy to understand and his midterm and final are super fair if you do his practice questions. Fair marker.
He's a decent prof, but you still got to put the work into your courses. Otherwise, I recommend him!
Easy A with this prof if you actually pay attention, and do the problem sets, and also do his review questions. That will set you for success in his class.
He may look strict, but if you go to his office hours and ask him questions, he's caring and will help you every step of the way. He made this class much easier to understand and I do not regret taking his class. Solid prof.
Super knowledgable, this prof is underrated because he teaches really well and helps you prepare for the midterm and final. You just have to put the work into this course and you'll do good in his class!
This prof is under-rated, this man is blessed, if you get the chance, take him as your finance prof, you won't regret.
I actually found his class to be interesting to learn about. Prof Kaplan made it easier for me to understand the class concepts, and his evaluations are beyond fair as long as you put in the work. Take him if you ever have the chance.
What a great prof, he is an amazing teacher, he is one of the best finance professors at Ryerson. He made Finance so much easier to understand and he is always open to answer your questions. Go to his office hours too!
Alan Kaplan is very knowledgeable in his teachings and he helps you understand the class material easily. As long as you pay attention in class, work hard in his class, you will do great. He's a decent prof overall. :)
Nice prof, he's available during his office hours if you need to ask him questions about the classwork. I genuinely like him because he is able to help me do well in his class. Take him!
He is terrible in AFF713. he should not teach this course, he should stick to AFF310. He should go back to school
This dude is one of the worst profs Ive had for finance. Hes super picky on your memos and on the project and presentations. He doesnt tell you what he wants and when he grades your work your always surprised by how bad you do, because you didnt do what he wanted. His slides are horrible and you might as well look for a different prof.
He is one of the best professors I've had, I'd love to take another course with him. His marking scheme was clear and concise, you just need to follow the instructions to exactly what he wants. If you're ever confused, he'll reply back right away and is extremely helpful. His lectures are engaging and interesting, just pay attention and write notes
I would genuinely say that he's one of the greatest prof to teach a course like this. He's always clear and understanding with students and with the class material. His tests are very fair and will help you to succeed in the course, as long as you ask questions and study hard. He's not a bad prof imo, and i would definitely recommend him.
Must go to class because the 30% exam is heavily focused on cases taken up in class. Not the best prof also not the worse - just make sure you have a good group for cases because they take up some time. Grading for excels and memo is tough but doable as long as you follow his instructions down to a T. Cannot emphasize enough to ATTEND CLASS
On the one hand he marked quite easily for the group assignment. On the other hand the exam was unfair. YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS AND LISTEN. Exam questions are based on what's done in class. Lost of work to do for the course and lectures are boring. However he tries to spice it up as best he can.
If you want to do well in this class ATTEND CLASS. His question on the final are based on specific things he said in the class so make sure you pay attention. He will not point out stuff in lecture that's on the test. Overall pretty easy marker for group projects.
He's not terrible but is not my favourite. You need to go to every class in order to be able to answer the questions on the exam. He makes the course quite difficult and the expectations are high. I would not take him again but if you have to take him you will be fine if you go to class.
he makes this course unnecessarily difficult. the final exam asks EXTREMLEY specific questions about content we covered in class, so if you didnt take the most detailed notes in your life you wont be able to answer the exam questions. him/ his TAs mark very hard on the memos too. also, if you dont have a good group for the projects, you MUST drop.
He's fine. Weekly case assignments seem hard but follow his formate even with wrong numbers, you will get most marks. His classes are very boring, but u should go to his case classes because the final exam has specific questions from in class discussions and take ups (its open book final so take pictures of his work, he doesn't post it after) .
prof is good, just make sure to attend class as final has a bunch of questions from the in class examples he does. other than that just follow his format to a T and you will do just fine
AFF713 is a difficult course. The cases were marked harshly considering the lack of instructions, but overall, weren't impossible. Highly suggest taking detailed notes during the case class, the final exam asked very specific questions about them but was fair. Alan is a really nice person and very easy to access outside of class to ask questions.
His lecture is pretty boring and useless. gives assignments almost every Thursday night and is due Tuesday at midnight. Harsh marking on the assignments. make exam extremely difficult.
Get a good group and work on the case as soon as it releases, Attend class and take detailed notes on what he does / talks about, Follow all of his instructions/guidelines to a T.
Do not take! Very bad!
Not the best. Not the worst. He tends to call students out for answers which is definitely not something a prof should be doing in 2025
Overall a really nice prof with a dry sense of humour that made class much more enjoyable. He explains the concepts well and at a good pace. Do note that his exam had questions based on something briefly mentioned for 5 seconds in class, so make sure you take notes on everything he says at all times, including what you think is unimportant!
