Funny teacher, interesting class, but tough exams
Great teacher, interesting, actually talks to students
Very interesting guy and easy to pay attention to... Study hard for his exams, they're unbelievable hard.

this was one of my favorite classes at NU. best teacher. cares about his students but doesn't take bull$.

Great interesting teacher, final was impossible
What a tool, i just can't stand him.
interesting subject matter. tests are multiple choice but still challenging. average of 5-6 profanities/class
Sport and society class is very good...great prof.
The people that say his tests are hard are MORONS. His tests are not bad at all. He is really laid back, but VERY dry and boring, and talks to friggin quietly you can't even hear him half the time. Overall, a fairly ****ty teacher.
sit in front, always come to class. Tests are hard, mix of names and ideas. very nice man, interested in his students, but gets off track telling funny stories.
He's a cool guy, very interesting stories and LOVES what he does. His tests are somewhat hard...however i went to about 1/2 of his classes...and I still got a B
Funny stories! Passionate about his job! Great class.
****, too in love with himself for anyones good. Gives tests based on Material he doesn't give to class
stories are really funny, tests a little hard, but not anything you can't study for, took the class as an elective and thought it was great
awesome teacher
If you could hear him, then maybe you could have a chance. He doesn't give you study guides and his tests are specific. He is also never at his office hours and never lends any extra help. I wouldn't take him again

tests are impossible... i'm a 3.6(my GPA would be higher if i dropped his class) student and wrote detailed notes....... still did awful..... he doesn't give back tests, only posts the grades outside his office.... AVOID him
interesting classes but sometims gets off topic with random stories (funny though) If you take good notes you'll do ok but some things he doesnt talk about in class and puts specific questions on the tests
I really didn't like this teacher as a person. He kind of creeped me out a bit. He did tell pretty good stories, but the tests were not based on anything he talked about.
Three tests made up our grade, and they included material from lectures supplemented with a lot of reading. He only posts grades outside his office door! Argh! Tells a lot of really interesting stories, but doesn't seem to want to help anyone and some of the stuff on test is not really gone over.
He's fine. The class is very boring. Rastahs were neat before this, but now i know too much, yah know? Great stories, but stories don't get me up at 9:15, and the tests were mostly common sence. Grades on the doors suck too. Take it if you have to or can cram real well:)!
i liked what he said a lot, he just tended to ramble and digress a little - but his tests weren't bad as long as you payed attention and he was interesting
Likes to ramble but good stories.
3 essays make up your grade, grades fairly. Tells interesting stories and goes off on funny tangents. I enjoyed the class.
Amazing Professor, classes are greatly interesting, mostly because of his storys. Tests had questions that he didnt emphasize in class but everything on tests were discussed. He is a true hippy and has the storys to prove it. take his course if u have the opportunity or if u just like funny storys
Well, at first i though this class woud be interesting but it really wasn't. I thought it was boring and unorganized. He never tells u exactly whats on the tests and there are only 3 tests that makeup your whole grade. He seems like a nice guy but the class is definately harder than he makes it sound.
Wasn't really a fan of this guy. The quizzes that make up your grade don't really have any formal organization to them(multiple choice, short essay, matching all randomly mixed up). Most of material can be gained from lectures, but does include some random things from extremely boring readings. Unless required, I would find another elective to take
Tons of stories but didn't really teach out of the text which all of his two test were out out and made up your grade. Would not take a class with him again.
Sport in Society: this guy is cool. tells great stories. take good notes and read books and you will suceed. hes down to earth and honest. his experience has given him lots of credibility in books, news media, and he worked out with arnold schwarzanegger.
can make class interesting, has some pretty cool stories but only gives three tests and unless you were there for almost all classes and paid really close attention even a good student can have difficulty
this class was harder than it should've been because he doesn't lecture well--just tells stories from his field work. which is ok until you need to take the test and realize you don't know much. i wouldn't take another class with him.
Great Teacher. Great Guy. Interesting Class.
Hands-down my favorite professor. If you like anthropology, you like Alan Klein. He breaths Anthropology and knows incredible amounts of information. It takes a dedicated student to score an A, but just going to class will ensure a good grade. It's all about the notes.
Funny guy, great class. Tells amusing stories. And he's a real hippy. No one else knows what they're talking about- the tests were fine, as long as you study.
Interesting professor who really knows what he's talking about. If you go to class and actually pay attention, you CAN pass, and pass well. Even his tangents are entertaining.
Very interesting. Hard to stay focused in class sometimes but you can tell he is such a smart guy and really knows what he's talking about. Study for the tests and you will really learn something.
He's very intelligent and has great stories, but not really the nicest guy and not really all that helpful. Kind of came off as a jerk, but definitely knows what he's talking about, but has a chip on his shoulder
Really good professor. The lectures are very important to attend. If you show up for class and do at least some of the textbook reading, you'll be in good shape.
Tells very interesting stories, very inteligent, teaches the material well. Sometimes its hard to tell whether its just a story or test material but you learn to tell them apart with time. lectures are 100% mandatory, test is 95% lecture. Funny and very open to any opinion. Makes that class a bit interesting. Not an easy A, though, takes effort.
imo, klein is an example of what professors SHOULD be like. doesnt hand out A's to students- you def have to earn your grade by attending lecture, taking thorough notes and keeping up with readings/material to do well on the tests. entertaining, knows his stuff.
Klein is the man. Classes can be kind of difficult, you should def go to class even though its not mandatory. Lectures are interesting and he has lots of anecdotes from his personal experiences that are both relevent and funny. Take his classes, you wont regret it
great teacher, very smart and open, strays from topic at hand a lot though - but always funny and interesting
Klein is a very smart man who will make you view the cultures and people you study in through a totally different perspective. You must do the readings and he will take a shine to you if you come prepared to discuss the material. So, read, comment and listen and you'll really glean a lot of Dr. Klein.
Has lots of knowledge in the field. Goes off on tangents quite often. There are only 3 quizzes, that is all that the grade is made up of, so don't screw those up.
good prof., funny and very and smart. lectures are interesting but not absolutely mandatory - def. get the notes though. only 3 quizzes for the whole class and read the books
The class wasn't too bad, but I thought it was pretty stupid how your ENTIRE grade was based soley off of three tests... and the tests weren't exactly easy. I wouldn't recommend this class if you're looking for an easy A elective.
Great prof, vast knowledge within the subject, which leads to tangents, but often times even the tangents help you to further understant the culture being studied
alan is by far the worst professor i have ever had. he will not return your e-mails, he is very arrogant, and makes virtually no effort to help his students outside of class. this is not an isolated event i know many people who feel the same way. aviod alan klein by all means
if you're looking for an easy grade don't take his class. he's an awesome proffesor, always has great stories to tell but there is NO structure to his class. there's only 3 quizes so if you do bad on one of them you pretty much do bad in the class. you have to go to class because everything he says is important and can be on the quiz
Nice guy, really knows a lot about anthropology and has some great stories to share. Your grade is only based on 3 tests so definitely do the reading and attend class. He makes it pretty easy to get a good grade, just put in the effort.
if you're the type of person who doesnt go to class. switch out asap. I didn't go to class all the time and it really took a toll on my grade. theres 3 quizes so if you fail one you do bad in the class. if you dont show up to class you will fail.
Best professor I've had at northeastern!!! I took sports culture and society and it was the most interesting class I have ever taken. I'm an Econ major and this class made me want to change to Anthro... He has a passion for teaching this course and has a lot of history with Baseball in the D.R. Take this for your comparative cultures!!!
Anth101 was a complete waste of time with him. His 'easy' three quiz system is the biggest teaching joke ever. He's disrespectful to just about anyone on any level and his lectures consist of him rambling without end..interesting stories sometimes, but ultimately I learned nothing. If you're looking to actually learn, get a different 'professor'
In order to do well in Klein's classes, you need to put in the work. Going to class is mandatory since its where you get all your notes. Keeping on time with the reading schedule is really important too. Klein is a brilliant and interesting prof. If you're willing to put in the effort, go for it but be warned: he doesn't but up with any BS
Completely lecture based, thinks he is god. Class was useless.
Absolutely my favorite professor. He doesnt do bs but his class is AMAZING!
Lectures can be interesting but can go off in tangents with pointless anecdotes. Attendance is a must as he uses notes from class in the quizzes. Silly three quiz system - if you do badly in one, will have to do very well in the other two to get a good final grade.
Professor Klein is a great teacher. His lectures are really engaging, the readings are not bad at all, and the three quizzes are easy so long as you pay attention and do the readings. One of the funniest teachers I've had. Always has a great anecdote to tie into the material or even just to entertain the class.
He seems to have made his tests years ago and never looked at them since. He doesn't know what's on them and can't answer many of the questions himself. I can't say that I learned much from this class, wasn't a result of anything he did as a professor.
Terrible. Thinks he's a gift to the anthropology department yet inept at teaching. If you take his class, take a 101 course with a guided structure -- he has no idea how to guide a class without a day-by-day guide for both he and students to follow. You will literally learn nothing if he has control over a loosely structured classroom.
horrible teacher. ABSOLUTE WORST. can't teach. tests are hard. lectures are incredibly boring
Loved him! He makes a lot of jokes and since it's an intro course he is easy. The load is not that much, but still you have to read.
Professor Klein is funny and class is interesting. But, you have to go to class or else you will fail the test. He includes questions on exams about minor details he mentioned one time, so pay close attention at all times and take good notes. Class is based entirely on 3 or 4 tests.
He may have some interesting stories but they really are useless. Always attend his class because that's where he mentions the smallest things and then puts it on the quizzes. Although I got a good grade in the class, I thought the grades being based solely on the quizzes was stupid. No one pays attention in class either. Useless course.
The class is required for IA Majors. Was easy if you went to the reviews before the exams. Professor Klein is very nice and makes class fun. I definitely suggest him!
One of the best professors you'll ever come across. Don't skip class and make sure you can tie readings to other examples from in and out of class. Klein gives great feedback and will work closely with anyone willing to put the effort in. You'll see your writing, critical thinking and discussion skills improve dramatically!
Really really easy to do well, just go to class and pay attention. Readings aren't too necessary, he basically goes over them in class
professor klein is great. the class is easy but you learn a lot and his lectures are interesting. attendance isn't that important and neither is doing the reading but both are interesting. going to review sessions with the TA before exams saves you. your grade is made up of just 4 quizzes (no hw, attendance, participation, finals, etc)
Interesting guy with some cool stories, but tends to ramble. Going to the TA run review sessions covers everything you actually need to know to pass.
Professor Klein is very clear, inspiring and nice. He likes to tell stories. His lectures cover almost everything you need, but make sure to read extra documents for an A. Go to review session! Those will save you
I took his introduction class this semester and his tests are quite easy. He likes to tell stories as everyone else said and I think his lectures were useful but you don't have to pay too much attention to them. Easy for me to get an A
Alan is a good professor even if he tends to ramble on telling stories. Super helpful and kind. Go to review sessions and do the reading if you really want to do well, otherwise easy to get an A.
Professor Klein is a great guy and a great teacher. If you care about the class you will do well!
Prof. Klein gives really interesting lectures, but struggles to clearly connect his lectures to the concepts that he wants you to learn. He'll tell you stories and go on tangent-esque lectures, so if you take good notes and come to class you should have all the abstract concepts you need to get a good grade. Grade is the average of four quizzes.
Alan Klein is the professor you spend 15 minutes drafting an email with detailed questions about the upcoming term paper for, only to get a five word reply that doesn't answer a single question asked. He also has a weird obsession with Native American tribes in South Dakota. 0/10.
Really easy class... The TA does a review before all 4 of the quizzes. Prof Klein gives an optional extra credit paper which boosts your final grade up one (ex B to B+) if the paper is better than a B.
He shows up to class unprepared and lectures about completely random stories. There is no outline or slides, or anything to go off of when studying for his exams. Taking each test is a crapshoot. Not a super hard class but not sleep-through A either. Horrible professor that is biased toward anthropology majors or sport team members.
I truly enjoyed having class with Alan Klein. His lectures are terrific, and he is engaging and hilarious. It was like being taught by George Carlin. That being said, the final grade is mostly based on quizzes, which is unfair to those who aren't good test takers. Even so, I recommend Alan Klein for his engaging, interesting, and humorous lectures.
Super super great guy, cares about his students and truly wants us all to succeed. However, the exams kind of come from nowhere and it's hard to prepare for them. It's hard to know what'll be on them. I remember for one, I did all the readings and attended every lecture but was still very uneasy about the info when I took the exam and afterwards
Such a cool/funny person!! Really interesting to listen to all of his crazy stories. The four quizzes are based on his lectures, so it's important to limit skipping class. We have a review day in class per unit, but its solely based on people asking questions so you get what you put into it. And the quizzes are easy (coming from a bad tester).
Just go to class and you can get an A. Tests are easy and you do not need to do the readings to pass. Lectures sometimes drag on, but his tangents and stories are always entertaining. Professor Klein is a nice guy and is very understanding.
He goes off on way too many tangents so you have no idea whats important for the exams and what isn't. This class is incredibly boring if you do not have to take it for your major do not take it with him
one of the sweetes, caring professors. absolutely loved him as a person. Class is super easy just show up.
Great professor, interesting lectures but you need to pay attention to all the details of the lecture. Grade consists of 4 exams and the exam material is all information from the lectures, so if he did not discuss it during lecture, it wont be tested. Tests are difficult and sometimes he goes on tangents, but overall extremely interesting class!
I love prof Klein. He lectures a lot but knows a ton, he literally wrote the book, and he has plenty of great stories to tell. Would 100% recommend taking one of his classes.
Dr. Klein is a great professor although tue material gets a bit boring when studying about the Lakota.
Somewhat interesting lectures, does not put in enough effort. Comes late to class, uses class time inefficiently, ended class early every lecture yet did not finish all of the material in the syllabus. Quizzes always had errors and ambiguous questions. Clearly did not care about the class or anyone's learning.
