He is very knowledgeable about the course. Take Him. He always gives quiz to test wether or not you read the book. You have to read the book. There is two presentation and two essay in the class. The final accounts almost 40%.
I have nothing but good stuff to say about Prof. Levinovitz. He's engaging, thoughtful, and runs his class well. While attendance isn't mandatory, he teaches to whoever's there, and does an extremely good job doing it. He occasionally gives quizzes, but they're not hard if you read the books.
TAKE HIM! Made me very interested in religion. There are no tests except one midterm. They're quizzes but easy if you do the reading. He is very helpful and you can tell that he loves what he teaches. One of the best professors at JMU!!
Prof. Levinovitz is awesome! You have to keep up with the readings in order to succeed in the class, but overall it's pretty easy. Only two tests, and he places almost no importance on them. There are two papers that he is EXTREMELY passionate about, but that is the only stressful part about this class. TAKE HIM!
TAKE HIM. Easily the best professor I've had at JMU thus far. I LOVE HIM. Class was always interesting and I actually looked forward to going instead of dreading it. I am not religious nor do I have any interset in religion but this was still by far my favorite class. Wasn't easy, but I would take it again in a heartbeat.
Professor Levinovitz may possibly be the best professor at JMU. His lectures were always engaging. I always left his class feeling inspired by his intelligence. To get a good grade in the class, you must keep up with the readings. The hardest part about the class are the two papers. The class is challenging, but in a good way. I WANT TO MARRY HIM.
I would never take this class again. WAY WAY WAY too much work for a gened. Imagine reading 50 pages every couple days and being quizzed on it, and doing extra research for papers! And he doesn't get that many of his students are only taking his class because JMU makes them...
SUCH AN AMAZING PROFESSOR! His lectures are so interesting and he made me think about religion from a completely different perspective. Only challenging part of his class was the two papers, but go to his office hours- he's super helpful! I loved his class and never wanted to miss a lecture. TAKE HIM!!
This class is A LOT of reading and work for 2 papers, BUT, this was probably one of my favorite classes this semester and i started with no interest. Levinovitz is probably one of the best profs at JMU. He's really good at lecturing. He may come off intimidating at first, but he's actually really funny and down to earth and very helpful. Take him.
Professor Levinovitz is an astounding professor. He isn't a boring professor who teaches religious facts - he likes the bigger questions. He's really engaging and helpful. participation isn't required. a lot of reading and 1-2 pop quizzes per week on the reading and class discussions. tough grader but loves what he teaches and you'll love it to.
This professor completely changed my life. He truly cares about his students and if they are interested in what he is teaching. It is a lot of reading for a gened but I personally found the readings interesting and wanting to read so I could participate in lectures. He's hilarious and really knows his stuff. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM.
on of the best teachers I've ever had, TAKE HIM. Literally class was so much fun and he really knows his stuff. Lectures are always interesting.
Professor Levinovitz is very passionate about what he's teaching so he makes the lectures interesting. The class has a lot of reading, especially for a gen ed. There are usually one or two really difficult pop quizzes a week on the reading. There are no tests which is good but there are 2 papers that he grades harshly. Be prepared for lots of work.
I left this class with the exact same amount of knowledge as the day I walked in. I can't tell you a single fact about religion because he said "you can google facts". He teaches about philosophers and strictly off pointless, lengthy, dry readings that are actual death to read.
This guy is brilliant. I loved his lectures and found the class extremely interesting, but he can also be very frustrating because he loves to focus in on what things mean and make you think. He is really passionate about the two papers so work hard on them because he's a tough grader and for the love of god DO THE READINGS even when they're boring
I have sort of a lovehate mentality with Professor Levinovitz. On one hand, he made the class super interesting, and his lectures were really entertaining and made you think about your own perspective differently. However, that said, he is a tough grader with the two papers he assigns (which are like his babies), and there is a lot of reading.
He enjoys to call students out. If you are shy do not take this class because he will call on you and embarrass you. Class is very interesting but also very confusing. Pop quizzes are very difficult.
One of my favorite professors, his class is very interesting and will keep you engaged, also super funny! Heavy on the reading, and gives two very important papers that he takes very seriously. Although one of my favorite classes, do not take this if you are looking for an easy gened. Expect to be quizzed on readings.
Professor Levinovitz is amazing. His class goes into detail about what makes religion tick. Who the great thinkers behind religion are, and why religion is such a big deal in today's world. You don't just learn about important facts and dates. Levinovitz's class is amazing, he'll make you think, and the papers are tough, but its so worth it.
Professor Levinovitz is great! He makes the subject really interesting. You will get a good grade as long as you show up to class for pop quizzes, do readings, and do the homework assignments on time, and try on the his two papers. He is also very willing to help you with anything you need.
Professor Levinovitz is extremely enthusiastic about the class. He's nice and has a sense of humor. There are quizzes, no tests really. He LOVES his two essays and grades them harshly. Be prepared to be put on the spot. There is A LOT of reading. Do them or you will fall behind. He gives pop quizzes so show up for class.
He's a great guy and super enthusiastic about the class. He gives random quizzes so attendance is necessary. Lectures are really interesting and if you put in the work, you get a lot out of the class. No tests but two papers which he grades toughly.
Levinovitz gives very good lectures, I always walked away from the class feeling like I had gotten something out of it. He pushes students to think critically and challenge their beliefs. There are a lot of readings on which he'll give pop quizzes. He'll call you out so it's important to do them. Really great professor I would take him again.
Prof Levinovitz was the best teacher i've ever had, hands down. He challenged the class' beliefs and every time I left the class I felt like I had really learned something. This is what a college class should be like. Make sure you read thoroughly as the clicker quizzes are very difficult.
The class is mostly comprised of pop quizzes. We had one test all year- the midterm, and two very long papers due. The papers were on confusing topics, and the pop quiz questions were usually difficult. I like Professor Levinovitz as a person, but I thought that his class was more difficult than it needed to be.
Professor Levinovitz was by far my favorite professor this semester. He assigns a lot of readings which he gives pop quizzes on, so don't take unless you'll do the readings. Amazing lectures that go beyond learning facts about religions. He assigns two very difficult papers, but if you work hard it is a fantastic class. Highly recommended.
Amazing class and professor!! I highly recommend him. Good amount of reading with quizzes daily. 2 papers are the main grade Gives feedback if you go to his office hours (they are not awkward) VERY thought provoking. He bashes every religion and challenges your thinking. I am a Christian and loved his class.
Class is very interesting but he is a very hard grader and their are only two papers that make up your entire grade. Lots of reading that you have to do and expect pop quizzes on the reading once or twice a week - his way of taking attendance. Lectures are interesting and he is very knowledgable about the subject but don't take for an easy A.
Class was terribly boring. Readings are long. Gives frequent pop quizzes which are hard. Assigns long papers and gives you a poor grade even after going to office hours to discuss.
Prof. Levinovitz is super annoying, especially at 9am. He makes fun of every religion which is kind of offensive. He calls on random people and asks them to share their religious beliefs which is so uncomfortable. and his class is way too hard for a gen ed. do yourself a favor and to try and take with someone else
Professor Levinovitz is great at what he does. He challenges the class by showing the questionable sides of all religions and highlights the questions within religions. There is lots of reading and quizzes almost everyday. If you want an easy A don't necessarily take this class, but if you want an interesting class definitely take Levinovitz!
I love Professor Levinovitz! His REL101 class is what made me decide to double major in Interdisciplinary Religion. You take clicker quizzes very often, but as long as you read (and sometimes you can guess honestly) you'll do fine on them. There are two papers and some online assignments which aren't bad. TAKE HIM PLEASE.
Professor Levinovitz tries to give you information on each religion from a non bias view. He gives readings every night and clicker quizzes a lot. What you put into this class is what you will get out of it.
Levinovitz made REL101 the best part of my day. I thought this class was going to blow, but Levinovitz is hilarious and his lectures always left me thinking, and wanting to learn more. He does a great job by not preaching at you, but teaching you how to think. He is a rather hard grader, but its worth it. He's the best professor I've had at JMU.
easy clicker quizzes but you have them almost every class. Readings are interesting but long and you have one due before every class. Levinovitz is great and truly makes the subject more fun and interesting while being unbiased i would recommend him to anyone. Mid term is somewhat hard (i got a C) , but the final is considerably easier (i got an A)
Professor Levinovitz is one of my favorite professors at JMU. He has an extremely interesting outlook on religion while still remaining objective. His class was mostly graded on reading quizzes and 2 papers (mid/final). Work is not an easy A, but if you want a professor who is passionate and clearly knows what their doing, take his class.
Definitely read for his class. He has very interesting (and sometimes funny) lectures and a unique outlook on religion. There are two papers throughout the course, but they aren't difficult, and he gives good feedback. You still have to work for a good grade, but it's worth it. I learned a lot from him.
Professor Levinovitz is an extremely knowledgable professor in many aspects of religion. This class is set up like a seminar where a lot of it is discussion, so if you don't have an interest in religion, you aren't going to enjoy sitting through this class. One group presentation, midterm paper, interview assignment, and final paper.
He's a good professor and the lectures are very thought-provoking, but I really dislike the way he weighs grades. There are clicker quizzes nearly every class on long readings, and if you get 1-2 questions wrong per quiz it can significantly bring down your grade. Not to mention that the clicker quizzes malfunctioned more often than they worked.
Professor Levinovitz has AMAZING lectures, the kind that leave you awe-inspired or at least thinking really freaking hard about the questions he poses. The class is large, but it feels very discussion-based because of the material. He doesn't just teach the basic parts of the main religions; he teaches how to think about religion.
I went into Religion class thinking I would hate it but he made it my favorite class. There is a lot of reading, some not too bad and some pretty long. Also a lot of clicker quizzes but he'll sometimes hint on what readings they will be on. He made the class so interesting and thought provoking, I highly recommend taking him!
Everyday you need to read something on or about religion. There will be a short quiz on each reading. Its not as bad as it seems. Trust me. The midterms are essays about certain religious topics.
Professor Levinovitz is a super nice guy, but he is very arrogant. If students had a different opinion on things than he did he would usually call them out and basically tell them they were wrong. He grades his papers harshly, and gives pop quizzes almost every week, so you have to keep up with the readings which are pretty long.
Absolutely love him!! He is easily one of my favorite professors! He does a good job at keeping the class interested in the material and cares about his students. If I could take his class again I would! He assigns a decent amount of reading, but it isn't too difficult. He uses clicker questions to take attendance and to make sure you read.
He assigns lots of readings, and often you'll have clicker quizzes on them, but all of the quizzes are fairly easy. There's a midterm and final paper and quick and easy canvas assignments. His lectures are funny and thought provoking. Attendance is required so you can take the quizzes- he only allows makeups for excused absences only. Easy B
Levinovitz is one of my favorite professors by far. Hes the reason Im minoring in religious studies. Theres reading & quizzes every day, but if you do the reading, its an easy A. You can tell hes passionate about the subject. Theres a lot of discussion, which makes a huge lecture feel personal. Theres no exams, just a midterm & final paper.
Rel 101 with Levinovitz is so worth taking! Clicker quizzes are easy and boost your grade a bunch, theres only a midterm and final paper (no tests) and he makes lecture enjoyable to actually listen to. Hes the reason im minoring in Religious Studies. Take him for an easy and enjoyable class!!
Dr. Levinovitz is a good choice for rel 101. ALOT of readings but make sure you read them because all of the quizzes are based off them. He can be moody sometimes but most days are easy, you don't even have to take notes. Take him if you don't mind reading, its an easy A
levinovitz is very passionate. no tests, but a midterm and final paper. lots of readings and were quizzed almost every class, which is how attendance was taken. do the work and you'll be fine. lectures were hard to sit through for me cause he just talked so much. whether you take this class or not comes down to interest in the topic
Lot's of difficult readings. 2 papers, one for the midterm and one for the final. Gives good feedback from the papers if you want it. Very interesting lectures.
The amount of reading is crazy. The quizzes he gives every class based on those readings include 5-6 very specific questions, so you need to remember every little detail from each reading. Purposely makes his class more difficult than necessary. Quizzes every class, so attendance is mandatory. Midterm and final paper with few online assignments.
He's an amazing professor. My favorite yet at JMU. Very passionate about teaching. He will usually quiz you every class but they are EASY if you do the reading. But beware, there will be a lot of reading and he will occasionally ask for a short essay for HW. He is an easy grader too. There are no tests or exams. Just a mid term and a final paper.
He's a really interesting guy and really cares about what he teaches! Understandably, he doesn't put up with people talking or not paying attention in his class since it IS a college class. He is a tough grader on papers, but gives great feedback. He is really objective teaching about the religions and gives great perspective about other cultures.
A really great professor! This class is a fair amount of work, but I think that Levinovitz is a fair grader and gives students the grades they worked for. There were no tests, only papers, and the papers were hard, however I received the grades that I worked for on the papers. If you work really hard, you will get the A but it won't come easily!
Probably one of the hardest Gen Eds due to him. Gives "pop" reading quizzes every single class as a way to take attendance. Gives crappy lectures. He grades the papers extremely hard and is super picky. The quizzes are very specific. Would never take him again because I haven't learned anything.
Makes this class very interesting a relates everything to real life and current events. Reading is important but assigned readings are short and manageable. Clicker quizzes every class but he walks you through the questions and often gives you the answers. Two papers all semester (midterm and final) and no tests. Solid choice
Does not teach in lecture and expects you to learn everything from difficult class readings only. I have not learned a single thing about religions. He expects you to read extremely difficult readings and take extremely difficult quizzes where half of the class gets the answers wrong. Also is a too tough of a paper grader for a Get Ed
Professor Levinovitz is a really nice and reasonable guy. However, his class is extremely difficult. He is extremely knowledgeable which is good but also bad in that he is a tough grader on papers and assignments that pertain to the class material. Strictly speaking from a grades perspective, I would not recommend taking a class with him.
I did bad on the first few quizzes because you really need to read the articles he gives before class. Clicker quizzes almost every class but are super short. No real quizzes, minor amount of homework, no tests, Midterm and Final are papers. Go to class, do the readings, and do decent on the papers and you'll get a good grade. He's cool
Alan is super passionate about his students and he truly wants them to appreciate the complexities of religion; he's really good about being unbiased, and his lectures are always really relevant and interesting. He grades on pop quizzes every class, some reflections, and 2 papers... and there's a TON of reading. It's a lot of work, but so worth it!
LOVE Alan!! My favorite part of this class were the lectures; he's interactive, interesting, and very funny. This class makes you question everything in a good way. Small quizzes based on the readings every day, not bad. No exams but 2 fat papers that take up a lot of your grade. Take Levinovitz!
Levinovitz's lectures were really interesting and enjoyable. There is a lot of required readings that are quizzed on in every class. The readings are sometimes very complex and hard to understand. The grade is mostly based on the midterm and final papers and he is a very tough grader. There are small writing assignments every week that are easy.
Poor teacher with little insight into politico-religious dynamics in past and modern world. Somewhat narrow minded, often resorts to vague, sweeping generalizations to classify peoples and religious groups. He evinces no nuance, typical lazy amateur grad school professor.
Dr. Levinovitz is one of the best professors I have ever had. I actually enjoyed going to his lectures because he makes them SO interesting. No tests in his class but 2 papers that he grades as a midterm and a final. He really prepares you how to write them though and what he considers to be a good paper. 100% recommend.
Levinovitz is an awesome choice. No tests, clicker quizzes every class on the readings (sometimes short, sometimes long), and a midterm paper and final paper. He is a bit of a tough grader on the papers but if you make sure you are answering what he specifies to you will do fine. This class is almost a guaranteed B, he makes class interesting.
Easy to access and gives good feedback. His lectures are fun and he's a great guy. He shows videos in class to help you understand more. A huge plus is that he chooses cheap textbooks (and on purpose)! You don't have a midterm or a final, but instead a paper. Small homework assignments that you need to think about, but nothing too difficult!
Attendance taken by clicker questions every class. Never read the books or readings assigned but still always did very well on clicker questions. Fell asleep often during lectures but got 100s on all HW. No tests but 1 midterm paper & final paper. Do well on papers because average is C and they impact your grade. I managed to get a B on papers.
He is a very interesting teacher that encourages students to use this class as a way to figure out yourself as well. His tests and quizzes aren't too difficult and instead of textbooks, you get 2 books that you read in class. If you try you will easily get an A, and if you don't listen to the lectures or do readings you will prob get a C.
He is super understanding about covid stuff and the class is very interesting and he has great energy so the lectures are not too bad, but he asks very specific questions for the quizzes so have to pay attention, otherwise not too bad
my man is the best teacher at JMU
Best professor ever! He was even on Joe Rogan's podcast! He is such an interesting and caring guy. The material is very compelling and has motivated me to even want to major or minor in religion. He realllyyyy wants his students to learn not only the material, but also to question themselves and their own beliefs. Always has great lectures
This professor is such a great choice. There are weekly quizzes and assignment, all open note. If you show up, pay attention, and take good notes you'll be good to go. Lots of reading, but I don't read a lot of it, just pay attention to the lectures when he talks about the reading. He gives such good lectures that make religion very interesting.
levinovitz was a solid choice for rel 101. he's a nice guy and truly is passionate about religion. weekly quizzes and discussion posts - not bad at all. however, make sure you study for the midterm. it brought my grade down a letter, so im hoping the final is easier
Prof. Levinovitz is a good prof for 101. Weekly quizzes and assignments, all open notes based on lectures and material. He does assign lots of reading and pre-recorded lectures but are fairly simple. His lectures are very unbiased and interesting regarding all religions studied for the class.
I've had this mans multiple times now and there's a reason I keep taking his classes! He is simply the best- the class is not too difficult as long as you put in effort, and it's hard not to be engaged in his classes. Take him if you get a chance
Class is mandatory but he doesn't take attendance. Weekly quizzes and assignments but they aren't difficult. There is a textbook but I never read. The course material was super interesting and one of my favorite classes. One time we spent almost all class talking about Lil Nas X's satan shoes. Definitely take this class and this professor.
took this class last year right as covid hit but before covid, attendance was mandatory bc of clicker questions. super easy, straight forward class. no computers so I would bring work to do for other classes and have a designated study time. graded on 10 easy asgmts, quiz for each chapter (clicker, also counted for attendance) & 2 papers.
Didn't understand much of the readings. Talks about random stuff during class. Reading quizzes mostly every class for attendance. Said your grade doesn't matter as long as you know what's going on. Should've dropped the class when I had the chance. A midterm and a final no other tests. Hw once a week and readings everyday and lots of it.
Didn't enjoy this class at all. If you are not a religious person be prepared to leave this class feeling frustrated. Lots of readings. He can be funny but his lectures can also be so boring. He also takes really long pauses between words in sentences. Pop quiz almost every single class on the readings due the night before.
His lectures were very interesting, the course material was super interesting, and overall he was one of my favorite professors at JMU. He was on the Joe Rogan Podcast too. The only downside was pop quizzes but they aren't hard if you read.
Professor Levinovitz gave amazing lectures that I was always engaged with. You have to read the readings assigned or you will be very lost, but they are very interesting readings. You never know if there are going to be a quiz or not, so you need to read and show up. Overall, an amazing guy. Definitely going to be taking from him in the future.
Levinovitz was my fave prof this semester! His lectures are very interesting and thought provoking. However, it's imperative to do the readings (1-3hours/week) bc of pop quizzes. They are usually straightforward but you'll be lost without the reading. Also, don't take the quiz async bc he takes random attendance and will report you to honor council
I hated REL102, the readings are super hard and you have quizzes on them almost every class period. The reading quizzes are extremely specific, especially considering how hard the readings were in the first place. His lectures are solely based off of the readings, and quite frankly, are boring.
Professor Levinovitz gives great lectures about the topics covered in the class. There are a lot of pop quizzes because he doesn't believe in letting you know about them ahead of time. There is homework every night comprised of a reading/multiple readings. Overall, it was a very interesting class.
Really fun guy! I thought he did really well and lectures, and he is really laid back. The quizzes are the hardest part, and I recommend that you regularly attend his lectures to be successful. I really did enjoy him as a professor!
By far my favorite professor! I didn't think this class would be as interesting as it was. There's a lot of readings and clicker questions based on them but a lot of it is common sense. You don't really have to read but some are interesting. Great professor, would definitely take another one of his classes, I always looked forward to this class!
Professor Levinovitz was by far my favorite professor this semester. He made the class funny but was also serious when the topic needed it. 1-2 clicker question quizzes on TurningPoint each week but really not hard at all if you a) take notes or b) read at least a little. Midterm and final are online and open note. TAKE HIM!!
LOVEEEEE! literally so nice and down to earth, thoroughly enjoyed the class. not much outside work, definitely make sure you do the readings. not a hard grader at all, really just cares about whether or not you're learning the concepts and can take something valuable away from the class. such a safe space. a class to make you think about life
Rel102 with him was great! Very interesting and engaging. There were many readings, but a lot of them had reading guides and were thought-provoking. I missed the first test, and he let me take it at a later date which I appreciated. Overall, easy A or B, and always looked forward to class.
Best professor I have had. Super interesting content and lectures, and such a funny guy. Unbiased when it comes to religion, which is a nice change from most religion classes. Readings are hard, but fine. Weekly assignments and a "pop quiz" almost every class, but they are easy if you even skim the reading. If you hate religion, maybe don't take lol
Great professor, especially for higher-up REL courses. Fascinating lectures each class. Participation is important to enjoy class fully. Make sure to do the assigned readings every class, as that's important to the class structure. Also, get ready to work hard on writing two papers: a midterm and a final. Difficult sometimes but definitely worth it
he was nice he made lectures fun but i still skipped and managed
Professor Levinovitz is a great guy. He cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. This was a very interesting class and made me question my beliefs. We have long readings outside of class and then easy quizzes everyday in class. His tests were take home and relatively easy if you actually read. I would recommend taking this class.
He's a funny guy and I could see him being engaging when lecturing every class but if you're not interested in the topic, it can be really boring. Pop quizzes in class based on readings. Only midterm and final online, open notes. Overall, easy class.
Took this course for a GenEd cluster and I gained so much from this course. Class is held twice a week and you should definitely go to class because he holds a pop-quiz over the readings and the quizzes can help boost your grades. Lectures are long and most material comes from the readings. Open book/open notes for the midterm and final exam.
Mr.Levinovitz was my favorite professor this semester. His lectures are super entertaining and makes all of the classes interesting. If you come from a religious background or are interested in religion at all you should take his class. Reading quizzes are every other week but are very easy if you have read. Midterm and final are take home.
Great professor. Passionate, available during office hours, explains the material really well, understanding, and great lecturer.
The first half of this class was Levinovitz just spittin hot Classical Chinese Philosophy fire for 75 minutes every class and it was genuinely one of the most formative and inspirational experiences I've been lucky enough to have in college. Take a class with him, you will not regret.
I found classes to be boring as I am not into religion. Lots of hard readings and pop quizzes based off them. Exams are onl
I really enjoyed this class with him, just took it for credit not for religion but I was intrigued. He was very good at speaking makes you want to pay attention. No assignments were very difficult, there is some reading to do but nothing is hard I recommend!
Nice guy, boring lectures. If you're interested in religion, you will love this course and him. Awesome guy.
Professor Levinovitz is the reason why I decided to add a religion minor. He is extremely knowledgeable on anything religion and his lectures are really interesting and funny. However, attendance is pretty much mandatory because there are random quizzes throughout the semester. Midterm and final are very easy as well,
Prof Levinovitz is VERY passionate about what he does, and it shows. Good personality and tries to make lectures as interesting as possible, but this class involves SO MUCH reading. Every class there are new readings that must be done, most being over 20 pages long. Will do pop quizzes on the readings, midterm and final are worth lots of your grade
Favorite professor! Lectures are so fun and interesting, get you thinking a lot. Attendance isn't taken, but he does in class "quizzes" on the readings. You get a notecard and have to answer multiple choice questions from the slides. Very easy class and truly enjoyable. Just try, and you will do great. Keep up the great work professor!
Very passionate about what he does and remains mostly impartial (doesn't insist on his own beliefs). There are new readings assigned for every class (around 20 pages each). He gives pop quizzes and some short writing assignments, but final grades are dependent on the midterm and final. Do the reading and come to class, you'll be fine.
Probably the most engaging professor at JMU. You can tell that he really cares about the material and the students of his class. There are a lot of readings you'll need to do and a lot of writing on those readings, but the grade you get on them depends on how much work you put into them. If you want an intellectually challenging course, take it!
he definitely cares about creating a unique learning experience and is very passionate about the topics discussed, but save yourself the stress. lots of reading, weekly writing assignments, quizzes every class, exams, and you have to tell a story to the class at least once. if you take his class you'll probably never forget it or him honestly.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! save your mental health and don't take him. he is the most intense professor i've ever had. a bad day for him means it's going to be a bad day for us. he'll make us do quizzes and not grade them. you might as well be a religion major if you're taking this because this is far from a gen-ed. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This professor is the worst i've ever had since being at JMU. He makes sure to point out that he's tenured and creates such a hostile environment. He'll call on you and completely destroy your response. You can feel the fear from students when he's lecturing, so arrogant and harsh. Listen to the others and don't take him. Too serious for a gen-ed.
A good prof. Lots of reading for a gen-ed. Every test/quiz is based on lectures and readings, so you need to go to class. He does pop quizzes as well to make sure you're paying attention. Is very strict about electronics. I found most of his lectures pretty interesting. Overall, it wasn't a bad class, just find someone to study with.
If you weren't religious before well pick a religion and start praying because his class is so test heavy that you will look outside the window praying you pass
If you are interested in religion at all, TAKE THIS CLASS! Dr. Levinovitz is so funny, passionate, and knowledgeable about his field. His lectures always challenge my beliefs and make me think more critically about religion, and while there IS a lot of reading, it's worth it if you want to take a meaningful class with a professor who truly cares!
infinite endless readings. takes about 2-3 hours to do all readings for just one class. had him MW 3:25-4:40 at burruss. very interesting and veryyy into all religions. kind of a nut. curses a lot. tests are quite hard. in-person pop-quizzes that you can't make up unless an excused absense. mid.
This class challenges your beliefs, in a good way, but it's a lot of work. I really recommend taking this class if you want to learn a lot, and Dr. Levinovitz is a really interesting guy who adds a lot to the class. My only complaint is that the class had no grades, you had to go to office hours to get them, which can be intimidating.
Test heavy (only a midterm and a final). In class tests. Quizzes every class that you cannot make up if you miss. Tons of reading before each class. No electronics. Interesting lectures but just a lot of work and harsh grading.
Great dude. Loves what he does and wants his students to do well. Sometimes he loses it when kids dont read the assignments but overall he's a pretty reasonable dude.
Levinovitz is super inspiring but strict – no phones or computers allowed. There's a pop quiz almost every class, and you can't make them up if you miss one. The content is heavy and there's a lot of reading. If religion isn't your thing, consider another professor, but if you're up for the challenge, he's definitely worth it.
This class is easy as long as you come to class, pay attention, and do the readings. Your grade is mainly based on 2 exams, short/simple (as long as you read) quizzes everyday, and a few discussion boards. I enjoyed listening to his lectures, and he has a great sense of humor. I would highly recommend this class if you're looking for an elective.
This class sucks imo, do not take if you're looking for an easy gen ed. Caused so much anxiety to students every class and was so rude before spring break. Quizzes EVERY class and endless long readings. Bro assigned 40 chapters for one class… Protect your peace and take another class.
Just don't. Ignore the good reviews they're lying to you. There are much easier options that won't have you working and reading more than a STEM class.
“Your majors don't matter, this class is what matters, it'll teach you things you actually need to know” 🤓🤓🤓
Genuinely the best class ive taken at JMU. I did not grow up religious but he taught me so much about religion and made it super interesting. Lectures were super interesting, but he assigns a lot of readings to do before class. As long as you do them, you will be fine, take this as a gen ed if you can, changed my perspective on life.
If you need a gen ed, take him. Second class ive taken from him and this class is so interesting as a non religious person. Makes sure everyone gets a chance to speak, if you do the readings (they arnt that hard) and go to class, its a pretty easy A.
Reli 101 was all reading, and as someone who isn't a great reader it was a bit difficult. The lectures did not matter as long as you read the material. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but he would do pop quizzes for attendance randomly throughout the semester. There were not many grades to the class other than the few quizzes, 2 exams, and like 3 hw
