Prof Mitchell is a really funny and good guy. Sometimes the material is dry, but c'mon, we're dealing witht he Bible. I would deifnitly recommend him and I will probably take my next theo. class with him
def my fave class this yr..it's obviously not the most interesting topic but his caustic humor keeps you awake..his tests are definitely reasonable and the workload is hot (basically readings you hafta keep on top of, but no papers or anything).
very straightforward, as long as you pay attention and take notes you will have an a.
I've never heard someone describe biblical scenes w/such dry humor! It's a class where you might be able to pass without going to class, but it's a lot more entertaining to go to class.
Pretty nice guy, but I am often bored to tears in class. He reads from this power point of the New Testament and then explains it. The explanations of the gospels and their meanings are pretty enlightening often, but his presentation is as dry as his humor.
Professor Mitchell is a great professor. This class was the saving grace of my semester. Very dry humor, which is great. I would definately recommend this class.
Excellent class. Mitchell has a great sense of humor, he really enjoys dry humor. You dont have to do any of the readings, just go to class and he tells you everything you need to know for the exams.

Mitchell is a great teacher! He really cares about his students. His class can be very boring and he has a dry sense of humor.
The class was incredibly boring. Every class was reading over NT passages on an overhead as he commented. Clearly knows his stuff, but it's very difficult to get into the class. You will def. fall asleep on a regular basis during classtime.
One of the best professors I have had at G'town. Very funny and dry sense of humor. Go to class and take good notes and you will be golden in this class. Very fair grader.
Prof. Mitchell (and the first name is spelled Alan, not Allen) is one of my favorite Gtown professors. While the course does not have much student involvement, his dry humor and incredible knowledge of the classics keeps things interesting. 2 Quiz, 2 tests, very fair. Also a fantastic dresser!
I thought this class was going to be real boring (Bib Lit? Come on...) but he makes it very fun and interesting with his jokes. His grading is fair and REALLY lenient. Just take good notes on the stuff that he talks about and you'll do fine. Lot of reading assigned, but not necessary to do all
Best Professor I have ever had. Knowledgeable, witty, charming. Excellent teacher. Concerned for helping students learn.
Excellent prof in s difficult seminar. He has a way of making the most boring stuff interesting. Great sense of humor. One of Georgetown's best.
love love love him.
Grrreat class! Easy A!
Excellent teacher -- not an easy course. Fair but not easy grader. Worth taking!
I cannot recommend him enough. He had one aside during one class about one translation in the letters of St. Paul and it changed the way I read the NT. Amazing professor.
Good teacher...I like him a lot...classes are boring, has a dry sense of humor that is actually amusing at 1015 am...2 tests/2 quizzes...very reasonable...I would definitely take him again
As someone who had never read the Bible before, I was absolutely terrified of this class. In the end, I ended up doing a lot better than most of the Bible pros in my class because I came in with little bias. I ended up getting an "A" by taking good notes, showing up to class, and studying all the readings and notes before the very fair exams.

You don't do much work that you're graded on. A midterm, a final, and two short quizes. That's 100 percent of your grade. It's really make or break. Good guy.
And also Portraits of Jesus but it wouldn't fit. Anyway, best professor ever!! Funny, extraordinarily knowledgeable about the Bible, especially the New Testament, very very patient and answers everyone's questions, even the most asinine of questions, essay-based tests and no papers (for either of those two classes), office door's always open, etc
I LOVE this man. Really great teacher, some times goes off on amusing tangents. Class was sometimes monotonous but normally interesting. Only bad thing was that it was an 8:50 class. If you're a theo major I highly suggest him! One 5-10 page paper and impromtu essay tests which aren't hard as long as you know the main idea of what you've studied!.
I took this class to fulfill my 2nd theology gen-ed and thought it was difficult. You have 2 quizzes, a midterm and a final and everything is text based. Prof. Mitchell is a really nice guy, however, and genuinely cares about his students. Will know your name after the 2nd day of class.
Great teacher... very nice and very helpful. As long as you keep up on the readings and pay attention to what he says in class, there's no way you can get lower than a B in the class.
Great prof. 2 exams, 2 quizzes (all short answer). I never figured out how he graded but I got an A- and I learned a lot. Very dry sense of humor - at first I couldn't tell when he was kidding but by the end of the year I was dying at all of his jokes. He really is a nice guy. He says "ATM" for "Anti-Tangent Mode." I wish I could take him again!
Really a nice guy and probably one of your better options if you need to take a Theo class. Even if you just cram the night before the quizzes/tests, you should do no worse than a "B." The material isn't that interesting but you dont have to read the books. Just make sure you take good notes during class and actually pay attention.
Loved this class. If you're interested in literature in general, you will like this class. Does into great depth of the Bible, and doesn't insert any of his own faith-based opinions in it. Quizzes and tests are analysis, but he is a lenient grader if you study. Great class. Funny, easygoing professor.
Easy class. Quizzes/tests are easy, largely just repeating what he's said in class. he's a fairly interesting lecture, with a decent sense of humor. Has some interesting opinions that he likes to share, but he clearly knows what he's talking about. Does require attendance via sign-in sheet
Pretty dry subject matter in my opinion, but can't complain about the way he teaches it. Very straight-forward, and the subtle humor helps. Two quizzes, midterm and final all graded easily (or "fairly" I guess). Nice guy, knows his stuff. Class is really more literary/historical than theological. If you're going to take BibLit, I'd recommend him.
Good professor. Pretty easy class, learned a lot about the subject, and enjoyed his sense of humor. Take
This is the most boring class I have had so far at Georgetown. Class consists of Professor Mitchell reading the bible and reading his power points and that is it. NO DISCUSSION. He does however have a good sense of humor, but it hardly makes up for the tedium of this class. The lesser of many evils to satisfy second theology requirement.
AMAZING Professor!! Caught my interest in the subject right away (of which I had none prior to the class). So funny and really good stories! Makes it as easy as possible. 2 simple quizzes, midterm (essay test but you get to choose which to do), and final (essay test but you get to choose which to do). Easy grader. Much easier than any Theo 001!
Awesome Professor! I took his Intro to Bib Lit (Theo 011) the semester before. This class is considerably more difficult than Intro but it's still very interesting and getting an A is manageable. He's funny and tells great stories!
Great professor. Really knows his stuff and makes lectures enjoyable with his sense of humor. The subject matter is more literary analysis so it's accessible to people of all experience with the bible. 2 quizzes, 1 midterm and a final. Attendance is mandatory. Highly recommend.
Easy class to ease your way into freshman year. No HW except reading. Grading is very lenient. Two quizzes, a midterm, and an out of class final. He is a funny guy so you will enjoy attending class since it is mandatory. Having no experience with the bible before, i still managed a B+ without doing any readings. Highly recommended! Great guy too!
Two 20 minute quizzes on bible passages, one midterm, one final. Do the homework in the first month of class, and then feel free to stop - no need to do it as he goes over the reading the next day in class, word for word. Often dull a bit a boring, but an easy class and worth taking if you want to get your Theo req out of the way.
Overall, a very good teacher.Very clear lecturer, well organized. Doing the readings is really just meant to supplement the course; you will really only be tested on material that is talked about in class. Relatively easy class, as long as you pay attention in class
Intro to Bib Lit with Mitchell is a good class to take to fulfill one theology requirement. If you attend class and listen to lectures, you will get a good grade. There is a moderate amount of assigned reading but it is not necessary. He is really nice, knows the name of all students, and has a good sense of humor.
Lectures are very clear, though sometimes a little boring. However, he has a dry sense of humor which can be entertaining. Your grade is based on two quizzes, a midterm and a final, which are all graded fairly and are drawn entirely from the lectures. Attendance is mandatory. Would recommend!
Great professor. Knows everyone's names and wants to get to know you. Lectures are boring in that there's no discussion, but he has a great sense of humor. Interesting, straightforward material. Two quizzes, midterm and final are tough but graded fairly. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Will miss this class. Perfect to fulfill requirement/ease you into college
Lectures are boring and sometimes hard to focus in, but try to stay awake and take notes. 2 Quizzes, 1 Midterm & 1 Final - all based on lecture notes. If you don't listen in class, try to at least read the assigned material. This class is not too hard to do well in (class average A-), and he makes an effort to helpget to know each student.
The class was a bit dry. Learning about religion is dry so its understandable. Mitchell is a GREAT teacher. Has a dry sense of humor and is always willing to explain if someone is lost. He's a fair grader. The class is based on 2 quizzes, midterm, and a final. Didnt really have to read the textbook because he goes over readings in class.
Nicest professor at Georgetown! Definitely would want to take him again!
Professor Mitchell is a great choice for a bib lit class. Pay close attention in class and take good notes and you will do great. Does a fantastic job of not only teaching but talking about life and has a bit of humor too. Assignments include 2 quiz a midterm and a final. Highly recommend.
Alan Mitchell is the sweetest man. He truly cares for each of his students and tries to get to know each student. Very knowledgable about Theology. Some of the material is dry and boring, but not long. Readings are not required, if you want him to know you care ask questions about material discussed. Easy and caring teacher- would take again.
Alan Mitchell is amazing. If you need to take an upper level theology, this is the one to take. He is caring and helpful and will even crack a few jokes here and there.
Mitchell is the man. Very easy class (basically show up, take notes, and you'll be fine) and exams are clear and simple. Subject matter is dry at points, but his jokes and tangents make up for it. If you're looking for an easy theo class that's not too boring, he's your guy.
The guy's a fantastic lecturer, and if you're looking for an easy B+ ish, take him. I found his grading frustrating because it didn't seem as though extra effort makes any difference
Such a sweetheart! He makes it very clear what he wants and all tests let you omit questions, so focus on your strengths, pay attention to what he talks about, and write it.
Good choice if you're aiming for an easy B+ or above. Show up to class, sit there and take notes, don't have to do the readings. Notes from lectures are really important for studying!!! His grading criteria is not as clear though. I went to office hours a lot but didn't end up with the grade I wanted. 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 take home final.
Go to class and take notes, everything you need to know you'll learn in class. The readings aren't necessary. Sections could be interesting but not a stimulating class... I had to keep myself awake. 2 quizzes, a midterm, and a final.
Professor Mitchell is the best! He is one of the most caring teachers ever. He truly has the best intentions for everyone. Just show up to class and take great notes because the quizzes are only from class. One of my favorite teachers you have to take him!
Honestly the best professor I've ever had. Knows a great deal about the material, but makes it very simple to understand. The quizzes and tests he gives are easy, all you have to do is listen to him. On top of that, you will leave with a new mentor and friend if you show interest. Learn a lot and get a good grade with professor Mitchell.
Great professor who truly cares for the mental and academic well-being of his students. He discusses everything you need to know in class and gives fair quizzes and assessments of the material. Very knowledgable so you will definitely learn a lot from him. Take any of his classes if you can.
Professor Mitchell is amazing. He's never super serious, so even if the class gets a little lecture heavy, he lightens it up with jokes. The workload isn't too bad, but there is some reading. He covers the material in class and there were no pop quizzes, so as long as you know what's happening in class, you should be good. Essay midterm/final
Mitchell is a stellar professor. You don't have to read, though the readings are certainly very helpful with the assessments, and his lectures are very clear and straightforward. As a theology minor, I've learned a lot about the scriptures from his class and it's definitely a very manageable class. 2 quizzes, a midterm, and a final.
Prof. Mitchell is great. He's incredibly kind, respectful, and can be pretty funny sometimes. He sometimes struggles with technology, but it is never a big issue. Be aware that his class is very lecture-heavy, which can be a lot. That being said, if you are interested in the subject matter, you will love his class.
Prof. Mitchell is a great guy. Obviously, zoom university was a bit of a challenge for him. Bit of a dry class, but honestly pretty easy to sit through if you're interested in biblical studies. Light readings, a few quizzes, a midterm and a final. Typical grading (neither easy not harsh). I would recommend!
Good lecturer on a fairly interesting topic. Only two quizzes + midterm and final, so very few grades. You probably could skip the readings, but they aren't long. Great guy, good lecturer. I don't know why you wouldn't take him for religion core.
Only took this class bc I didn't get into problem of god but, this is a solid choice for theo requirement. Class is basically one long lecture, but he breaks it up by throwing in some fun jokes. Don't have to do the readings, as long as you take good notes in class. Grade is based on 2 quizzes (33% combined), midterm (33%), and the final (33%)
Professor Mitchell is awesome! He is sometimes slow w/ grading and lectures get slow, but he is so smart & funny! Also, very understanding of extenuating circumstances. Ask questions and participate, and you will get a lot out of this class.
Professor Mitchell is simply the best! He is extremely knowledgeable and is available for any questions you may have. If you are ever feeling sick or have important personal matters to take care of, he is very understanding and caring. While the classes can be lecture-heavy, he always makes good jokes to lighten the mood. Highly recommend!
Stay away from him. I took this class because prior ratings suggested Mitchell was a good choice for an easy A in Theo. His lectures are extremely boring and dry, and he doesn't even try to engage with the class. Telling that my worst grade at Georgetown was in a theology course. DO NOT Take this guy if looking for a good grade in an elective.
Professor Mitchell is a great professor! He is a little boring sometimes but he asks many thought provoking questions. I recommend taking his class for Intro to Bib Lit!
Great prof. Lectures can be boring but paying attention is worth it because it will grant you success in his class. Very accessible for outside of class help (office hours and email). You can tell he cares about what he is teaching and knows his stuff. Highly recommend, both for a good grade and a good experience.
I loved having Mitchell so much. My class was language focused, though, so we really didn't have to read the textbooks, but sometimes he expected us to know what was in our readings... but it was ok if we didn't read it. He was very funny and kind and had so many interesting stories. Definitely recommend showing enthusiasm for his lectures tho!!
Can comfortably say the worst professor I've had at Georgetown. Watching grass grow is more interesting than the lectures and the quizzes/test are graded completely arbitrarily. Avoid at all costs.
Learned a lot of interesting stuff and he's pretty funny in lectures. To get an A you just need to pay attention during lectures and take thorough notes because he'll emphasize 1-2 core themes for each section of the bible. Everything you're graded on (2 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final) is just applying the themes he talks about to a section of text.
One of the few professors I've had at Georgetown that truly enjoys teaching. While his lectures can be a bit dry, he is a wonderful person and is quite lively outside of the classroom. I would recommend going to his office hours, as he is a great person to get to know and it'll help your grade. He has SO many funny stories about Georgetown too.
This class has almost no daily work but is extremely boring. It is very difficult to follow along the lectures because of how dry they are. You will feel unprepared for the tests and quizzes but can get by making stuff up on the spot. I did well in the end but do not feel like I learned anything.
Prof. Mitchell is the archetypal wise college professor that really challenges and changes the way you think. He isn't the type to be micromanaging students and their grades, so if you show up, stay engaged, and communicate with him, you'll be fine. Of course, don't take his upper-level courses if you aren't interested in the New Testament...
Tough grader, but overall a nice guy. Lectures are boring but at least he's trying. Just read the textbook and you'll be fine.
Professor Mitchell is definitely kind, but I had a hard time connecting with him. His class is very lecture heavy and he is often not clear about what will be expected for assessments. Your grade is made up of 2 quizzes (33% total), a midterm (33%), and a final (33%).
Lectures can drag, but what can you expect with the source material? He is witty & (dryly) funny, and presented the material clearly. Quizzes/tests based on application of concepts to passages discussed in class. Grading was fine with a bit of studying, and he always gave clear reasoning behind the grade of each question. Loved Prof. Mitchell!
Loved Prof Mitchell so much. Grade based on two quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Midterm and final are both in class papers. Very chill grader overall and if you know at least two details from what he talked about in class and just throw those into your paper, you'll be fine. I studied max an hour for the papers and quizzes
What a sweet professor. So knowledgeable and wise, passionate, unexpectedly funny. Lectures could get a little rambly and sometimes not super structured so it was difficult for me to retain the info but the class is easy and Prof Mitchell makes it interesting. You will also hear about his lifetime of scholarly adventures, it's great.
Great professor. Quizzes are very straightforward, so are tests. Pro tip is PAY ATTENTION in class and to what he says. Basically directly quote him in your answers and you're good. This is not a class to zone out in. His lectures are pretty interesting though because it is clear he cares about his work. Highly recommend!
I really like Professor Mitchell. His lectures can be boring in the beginning, but you learn to appreciate them as time goes on. This class is mostly about who wrote the Bible, for what audience, and why they wrote it in the way they did. For the midterm/final, just understand at least two of the books really well, and you will do great!
