I only missed one point out of all assignments/labs. that part was easy. the tests, however...RIDICULOUS. he throws random facts in there and makes it way harder than the class actually is. im a soph with a 3.9 and find classes that should be more challenging way easier than his class bc of his unfair tests. if i get a B in this class its such BS
Professor Molumby is in two words, THE MAN. His lectures are interesting, and he provides some good anecdotes(NOTE:ANECDOTES WILL LIKELY BE ON TEST). A lot of people complain about the tests, but I literally took notes on the slides the night before and got an A in the class. Old exams are useful, but don't just limit your studying to those.
I recieved a C in Dr. Molumby's class, but he was a pretty decent teacher. I agree the antedotal lectures are fun when you are there, however not when it comes to the final grade. Exams are hard, Labs are easy and so are the problem sets. He is a really nice guy though
This class honestly was the only class I actually enjoyed this semester. I enjoyed his lectures and his metal references(and cob shirts). His tests were pretty much impossible, even when I studied I received a B, but I feel like I've learned a lot from this class. I liked him! If you want an A though, you need to study for the tests HARD.
The best way to succeed in this class is to actually go to class and pay attention. However, this is hard because he does not stay on topic and he throws so much info at you it is hard to know what will even be on the tests. But he has a great grade scale so go to all labs and turn in all homework and you will do good.
Awesome teacher. Reuses tests, so STUDY the old ones that are online. Definitely keeps your interest, pretty funny guy. Plus, he's got a sweet beard.
Molumby is awesome! And yes I think he's hot - he likes heavy metal and beer and bees and he talks about them often but he's interesting and makes going to class worth it. Exams, however, were pretty brutal, so study everything! :-/
Awesome Teacher!! Very interesting professor! He knows exactly what he is talking about and can keep your interest in class
Cool guy, makes the material interesting..
He never stays on topic, starts randomly talking about zombies or other things. Though it's interesting it doesn't help me learn!!! He's really weird but interesting so I do recommend him. U wont learn a whole lot from him though
Molumby is one of the most passionate biology professors at UIC. He is very intelligent, loves what he does and has a great sense of humor...totally recommend him to anyone! I really look forward to having him teach ecology and evolution next semester. Advice: You need to keep up with the class...he is serious when he expects you to do the work.
Great teacher. He accounts for his difficult tests by dropping the lowest, which is helpful if you mess up on one. His questions on exams just require you to remember his annectodes, which are actually entertaining, and to also use common sense. STUDY PAST EXAMS. Also extremely helpful in office hours.
Great class. Look at past exams and memorize the slides if you want to pass the exams. Labs are very easy. There are 3 problems sets and lab reports too, but they are all easy. Very cool guy, gonna miss this class.
He really took the fun out of the subject for me. His lectures seemed interesting, but he couldn't control the class long enough for anyone to HEAR it--300+ people talking over him! If you have a strong background in this subject and a study group--you'll be fine. If not, you'll have trouble. His exams are difficult if you can't hear in lecture
THE COOLEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!trust me i took this class thinking that it would be boring but this was by far the nicest class, the topic is interesting but his teaching is so much world revolved and it seems like he has large general knowledge, making the class extremely fun. I.E. in lectures his examples used were from pharaohs to Star Wars to roc
I really enjoyed this class; needless to say I had almost no interest in ecology before Dr. Molumby. I really enjoyed taking his class! He's clearly super knowledgeable about the subject he teaches and he enjoys what he does which is definitely relayed in his lectures. He certainly made class interesting and made me take an interest in ecology.
As a 5th year senior looking back, I found his classroom model to be inappropriate and unprofessional. He fails to properly prepare people for future coursework: He poorly taught research work ethic and skills (critical); lack of directing focus to lecture material.. Also, office hours are purposely set to make it hard for you to get to them. Yeah.
He is an awesome teacher and very helpful IF you ask for it. Be sure to sit in front for lectures as he walks around and you can't hear him in the back of the class.Be in lecture, pay attention, and you'll do fine.
HE REALLY LOOKS LIKE KENNY LOGGINS!
His lectures are not worth going according to my opinion. He just talks to the students in the front. Almost all the time, he spends time talking about stuffs that are not related to lectures and goes off tangent all time. Tests aren't that bad if you study the ppts word by word. Labs are useless.
Lectures were very boring. He was very mono and would always drift off topic. Make sure you go for those I-Clicker points. Labs were a waste of time, whereas they had nothing to do with what we learned. Exams weren't that hard, but you had to make sure you study previous exams well so you are familiar with the questions.
Molumby is the man! His lectures are actually really interesting and he's a pretty funny guy. Labs and clicker points are easy. Tests are a bit tougher but as long as you get some old tests, you'll be fine. He also drops your lowest test and makes an 86% an A. Overall a great class
He only talks to the students in the front and refuses to use the microphone. The only time he would use it is to say "There is no God" during lectures. He uses iclickers and does not curve at all. Labs and TAs are useless. The exams are easy if you study old exams but not the ones he posts. Lectures are boring and people always talk over him.
Ecology&Evolution. Interesting in class. Attend lecture tho, it is what exams are based on. Reading helps to understand more in-depth. Cool guy. Proponent for the LGBT community, but has a wife himself. Awesome dude - his main study experience are in bees/wasps.
the exams are hard because he makes them that way intentionally so know your stuff and study for the exams! i got an A from doing well on the first 2 exams, bombed the third one but the final is optional
Molumby is a great lecturer and will effortlessly hold your attention throughout the lecture. Exams are all multiple choice and the questions are very tricky. Powerpoints slides are helpful but you do have to read the textbook on your own. Some of the labs are equal to a joke. Easy class if your put the required effort.
He's is such an awesome guy! Really interesting lecturer and really funny too. I highly recommend taking homeostasis with him!
He is an amazing teacher! Super cool. STUDY THE OLD EXAMS THEY ARE ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME! He is the hottest most badass teacher on campus!
He's a really interesting person to listen to although most of his information that he shares with the class are from documentaries.
hes very good at lecturing however he expects you to know EVERY word of all of the 150 slide presentations. His exam questions are EXTREMELY tricky, you really need to know your stuff to do well.
His tests are very tricky, watch out!!!
He seems like such a cool person to be friends with but he's not a great lecturer or professor. Very tricky exams. Multiple choice but he gives so many options (A and B; All of the above, A B and C) things like that. It throws a person off because almost all of his questions are like this! If you think you can handle that then take him!
Molumby is a cool professor, but his lectures are not that all interesting. Sit in front if you want to stay up. Exams are very difficult, and you MUST know the material because his exams are TRICKY. You have 3 basic answers, A & B, A&C, ABC, and none of the above. Easy B if committed.
Extremely overrated professor. Is a poor lecturer who is difficult to understand (goes off on tangents like crazy) and gives really tricky exam questions. Avoid at all costs.
The class seems good UNTIL... you have to take his tests!! They are so tricky. The best way to prepare yourself is studying off old exams and attempting to memorize all 100+ power point slides, literally. I don't suggest waiting until the night before to study for his tests. you'll drive yourself crazy and be overwhelmed with information.
Real easy B, extremely hard A. As everyone said, exams are just way too tricky.
Dr. Molumby is a great teacher, but you really need to pay attention to all the minute details on his lecture slides. He explains the concepts in class thoroughly and tells jokes at the same time too! He is enthusiastic at times and sometimes not. I would recommend him though because he has VERY detailed information on his slides.
Goes off tangents. a lot. exams are hard. not helpful at all. avoid him if you can.
Goes off tangents. a lot. exams are hard. not helpful at all. dont take him
He is a good lecturer but gets off point at times. His tests are SUPER hard because of the amount of detail that are in them.
Very easy B not so much A.
extremely nervous prior to his tests because they are very very tricky. He's a great professor and very intelligent guy ;) of course, you do have to study for his exams! that's a given. just hope these next few won't kill me
From what I understand Molumby is pretty difficult in the BIO 101 class but I highly reccommend him for Homeostasis! He is a very interesting lecturer and really funny! Yes his tests are kinda difficult but I did surprisingly well on his tests. Very cool guy!
best bio professor so far :)
He is an alright professor, mandatory to go to class because he uses an I- clicker. He tends to ramble a lot and his tests are a bit difficult. But he can be very helpful if you go to his office hours, overall it is an interesting class with alot of information and reading is required. It is an easy B but you really got to work hard to get that A.
His tests were hard, but studying his old exams were more helpful then actually studying his powerpoints. It is easy to get a B in his class and hard to get an A. Lastly, he really needs to learn how to use a mic.
Overall, I really enjoyed him as a professor and he got me more interested in ecology by the end of the class. A couple things, though... 1)He doesn't really use a mic. 2)His exams are tricky on purpose, but practice off old exams. 3) He has lots of seemingly tangent stories but learn to understand his point. 4)He promotes many of his own opinions.
Class was way too hard for what it was. Tests were comprised of 40 fun-fact questions, making it impossible to study for. Would rather have learned about organelle biology that more directly relates to us. That being said, he's a very cool teacher/ guy/ dude. And makes it entertaining during lectures. Still too hard though.
I was not sure what to study for the first exam, but after taking it, it is best to study his powerpoints and pay attention during lectures. It may seem like he is saying random things, but if you really listen you can see why he is telling this. Labs were very helpful in understanding lecture as well. Powerpoints best thing to study, I got an A.
Assignments/Discussion/Lab/ Icliker points are easy to earn, so don't miss them. Labs are very simple, not quite interesting. For the exams, studying the slides+ old exams can get you a B easily. Understand the materials will help u earn an A. I didn't attend the lectures often, only studied the night before the exam and earned an A.
This guy is the most hipster biology professor you will ever have. He seems like a cool guy and is extremely knowledgeable. Going to lecture is really important for this class. The exam questions come directly from lecture, so studying the power points is helpful but insufficient. Labs were easy, but lab reports kind of annoying for this class.
Molumby is awesome! He is very helpful and straightforward. His test are difficult but if you study and read all of the information you should be fine!My favorite professor thus far! As far as hot, of course!
Great Prof! I would recommend him to every incoming UIC freshman.
He tends to go off on tangents and not fully cover the material. The labs are mind numbing but nothing too bad. The tests are hard. Even after reading and trying to memorize literally hundreds of slides it still feels like he uses questions from the top of his head and not actual material. Good guy but overall a bad teacher.
Unorganized. Id rather read and understand the book than be tested on powerpoint slides that force you to memorize for the tests instead of understand the material. he literally said he expects us to know every word. Enjoyed lecture but as far as studying, it was more independent based and for me I prefer more structure. ull do fine if u study hard
Do not take him, his exams are hard and you got to memorize powerpoints, stay away from him!!! you have been warned
One of the easiest class I've taken. His exams are super easy if you attend class and pay attention :)
This class was ridiculously easy! Did not look at a SINGLE powerpoint slide. Did not TOUCH the book. Just simply studied previous exams and got an A. Attended lecture only to get iclicker points then stopped going.
Molumby is very non-traditional with his teaching methods to say the least. Average professor and the class was an easy A. Just ignore all his ridiculous yet hilarious comments about evolution and you should be fine. Oh yeah, and get a good TA. They matter big time. Class doesn't require studying.
Very hard class if u dont have a good TA so try to get a good one. practice all old exams because he gives the EXACT same problems in exam. P.S dont practice the exams he posts on bb. try to get high scores in all lab reports and practice problem sets. wait for the genetic test as it will screw up ur grade.
Molumby is charismatic and easy to follow in lecture. He is passionate about biology. He's also willing to answer your questions (although try to catch him in person--he's not great with email). MEMORIZE THE POWERPOINTS (I used flashcards) and look at the book and lab manual. Turn in detailed lab reports. GO TO LECTURE.
he think he is darwin or sth,,,clearly he is just focusing on lecture.. he is not willing to help you outside of class for example, not answering email question, during office visit told student look up wikipedia with question... what a awesome bio professor i would try avoid his class his test is tricky too
His whole objective is to trick as many students as possible and it sucks. He doesn't use a mic on purpose just to make it harder for students. He reads his rate my professor reviews but never listens to them. I got an A in his class but I would never take him a again because the information he focuses on is wasteful. Good luck! p.s his posture....
Best teacher at UIC. Period.
MEMORIZE every minute detail of the PPT slides. Exams include the most obscure references. Do the reading too. Molumby/TAs will tell you to concentrate on lecture, but the reading is on exams. Frustrating class. Wish there was a better format. If you memorize, you'll just forget.
He will tell you that you do not need the book, you need it. He constantly asks questions based on information in the book and says "I expect that you read this in the book". He will also explain things very vaguely then proceed to ask clicker questions about the information. I could have gone anywhere with my GPA and ACT, I regret UIC even tho $
He is hard to follow during lecture because not only does he refuse to turn up the microphone (if you're not sitting WAY up front, you WON'T hear him), he goes very fast through the important slides and always goes off on tangents that do not help with the understanding of the material. Plus, he likes tricking people with the iclicker questions.
His expectations are unrealistic if you have any other classes or if you have to work. Exam questions are unclear, making you second guess everything you think you knew. It is impossible to hear anything he says in lectures no matter where you sit, making note taking impossible because you only get 1/4 of the stories.
Great lectures. Little misleading when discussing exams. Does use book, lecture, and ppt for exams. Questions are vague really need to pay attention to the wording of what is being asked. When using practice exams do the work for the problems do not depend on multichoice.
RUN & DON'T LOOK BACK! Hands down, one of the worst professors I've had in my college career & I wanted so badly to like him. I am not trying to slam the man but I'm just being honest. He gets off on tricking his students...WE GET IT MOLUMBY, YOU'RE THE SMARTEST GUY IN THE ROOM, SO ENOUGH WITH THE GAMES AND JUST TEACH US!
Not boring, extremely cool. Not a hard grader.
worst professor ever. not only does he refuse to use the mic, he always mumble useless information. along with that, he mentions certain information during lecture (that is not on the ppt or on the book) and puts it as a question on the exam. BUT ITS USELESS BECAUSE YOU CANT EVEN HEAR HIM. refuses to give a curve when he fails to project his voice.
just like everyone else on here... i advise you to stay away. he knows people look off his old exams. changed up his new ones. and seriously.. just teach the material and stop talking about life stories man. getting an easy going TA is crucial.
He is a great lecturer and interesting to listen to.He uses real life stories to explain the topics. Exam questions are vague and misleading, written deliberately to trick students into choosing wrong answers. It's more about how well you memorize every last detail from about 1600 of his ppt slides than how well you understand the concepts.
His power points are 200 slides per topic!!! He is not good at teaching a 100 level class. Exams are difficult, tricky questions. He does not curve.
To be completely honest, this guy was very tough. Material not that hard, but the way it was tested, pretty tough indeed. Exam questions were pretty hard too. It wasn't about knowing the nature of certain biological concepts, rather, his last sentence on slide 256 of his 3rd powerpoint of the unit.
You don't have to go to his every lecture and read the textbook and still managed to get B in his class.Didn't like his lab reports and problem sets because some of the TA's are really anal about how you write them!To sum up,3 exams the 4th exam is an optional exam.3 problem sets,2 lab reports and 2 presentations.
Did not enjoy his class. He repeats a lot of questions from his previous exams but you do not know whats the right answer....very tricky questions!
Let me be frank, this is a college level course. Expect to study hard - all course material and then some. Alan is a terrific professor, and his office is always open to students that show initiative and have a genuine interest in the biology. Have respect for the course and your education, if you struggle with mechanisms and terminology, STUDY!
He is very interesting to listen to if you can avoid sitting near other students that talk or text the entire time. His tests are tricky, unless you actually put in the time and effort required for a 5 credit hour class. I wish I was taking him for homeostasis.
I took his bio class about four years ago. I'm in medical school now, and still think his class was more difficult than necessary. Obtain old tests. Give your clicker to someone else. Find old lab reports. Do what it takes to get ahead. I wouldn't be where i am without these tricks.
I thought Molumby was a great professor. Unlike many professors, he managed to hold my attention during lectures. My only issue was that his exams covered stupid details from lectures instead of major topics. It was like he was testing us on our attendance instead of our understanding of the topic. He gives a great curve at the end!
Allan is one of the weirdest most out of this world professor. Dude is one smart cookie but he doe not like giving out the crumbs so everyone is left out on the knowledge portion. Make sure to get the book he trolls people to not read the book. You have been forewarned go and take the other guy, he hot though so girls take him and never look back.
No curve and impossible tests. They don't accurately portray your knowledge of the material but rather your ability to decode his questions and figure out what he actually is trying to ask. Power points are 175 pages per topic. Most unhelpful professors I've encountered.
EXTREMLY NICE PERSON
He was a decent professor. He teaches easy concepts through long stories and they appear on the tests. He is very helpful during office hours and after class.
Dr. Molumby made this class very interesting. His stories and humor made it fun to attend. Exams however are pretty hard- get old exams! Read the book!
Smart guy but you gotta follow the flow of his conversations to keep up. Really nice and helpful but don't expect him to be your babysitter. Kinda hot too...this guy can really pull off a mild, scruffy, bearded look.
You will either love him or hate him. Molumby is an awesome Bio professor & my fav so far. Direct & honest and he knows his stuff. Nice & interesting labs. Xtra pts from clicker Qs. His objective is for you to learn NOT to give you easy questions. Best class I took so far. 3 exams, 1 opt final. Would retake the class again.
I don't know why everyone says this guy is so tricky on his test questions. If you show up for lecture and pay attention they are not that hard, and he gives you old tests and puts his slides online. Maybe he's tricky for all the people who talk endlessly through his lectures. Seriously, the mic thing wouldn't be an issue if people would shut up.
I had him for 101 and that class was easy A so I thought it would be like that for 240. But I was TOTALLY wrong. He's the worst professor you can take for 240. His lectures are 100+ slides, skips about half of them, rambles on, test questions are very hard/tricky, doesn't reply to e-mails, and no curve. Impossible to get an A unless u r super smart
Really cool guy. Really passionate about what he does, which is always nice. Getting an A in his class is not easy though. 60% of the class grade is based on 3 exams, which themselves are pretty challenging. The highest grade I received was an 85%, so I had to be almost flawless in every other area. I got the A by, literally, 4 points.
His teaching style is just arrogant. He wants you to memorize rather than to learn and appreciate the material. 2 Exams, 2 Papers, and Final Exam. You screw up one thing, say bye to a letter grade. Take Someone Else!!!!!! I rather take KN251/252 all over again. Record his lectures or write everything he says. Luckily I memorized all his slides.
Just wonderful. First day make sure to yell at him to turn up the volume on the microphone. Other than that it's a nice class. Adventure stories from otters, wasps, AIDS, and more. Just show up. All the answers to the tests are in the secret folder on blackboard surprised he never noticed (guess he just left it there for the lulz).
Class was very hard but final wasnt bad and amazing curve. Deff take him
Molumby is a great professor, he knows his stuff and makes sure you do too. You don't NEED the book, but it helps reading it along with the ppts. He lectures off of his power points but his exams [recycled] are TRICKY. The optional final was easy but mainly conceptual as opposed to specific examples. he curved our section by ~4%. STUDY HARD.
he is a horrible prof. we can barely hear him. To get a good grade, try to get as many small points as possible. This is exactly what I did and ended up w/ A. Such as get A in presentations, problem sets & lab reports. And then obviously study for exams. Must get old exams from friends in order to do well coz he recycles the old exam questions.
Dr. Molumby was one of those professors you ether loved or hated. He was extremely caring, helpful and engaging during class. The cons were that his courses were interesting, but hard to prepare for the exams. Better then most though
Dr. Molumby is excellent. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about biology. He tells some fascinating stories in class, all of which are relevant and many ended up on exams. His exams are difficult. If it's hard to hear him, just sit closer. It's not his fault - UIC desperately needs to invest in new P.A. systems for the large lecture halls!
He was a very clear professor, his tests were very predictable, though he Intentionally throws curve balls & he makes errors on tests so pay attention for more points! Only read the book if he stresses it, tests are mostly from lecture. Easy A he seems like he is very passionate but presses his atheistic views on the class wanted or not, that's bad
First, if you're a biology majore and want a good teacher and learn from good wisdom this is the teacher for you, however this teacher is really hard to hear and this class may come off as esy, but its not. The exam challenges you in ways you did not expected its the mixture of testing you in a complexs way. Basically if you space out too much, dont take his class.
His tests are way too hard and I really studied for them. I really thought I could get an A because I worked hard and got really good grades on presentations and lab reports, but no. It is very hard to hear him so you literally have to sit in the first three rows or you are screwed.
Not your typical professor. He knows what hes talking about however. If I was to retake the course, I would read the lecture slides and make sure I understand all of the terms since he goes over many examples during lecture. You'll get lost if you don't remember what something means. His tests are tricky. You have to be focused for them. fair Curve
Dr Molumby is awesome! I took him like 2 semester back and luckily I get to take him next semester for bios240. I struggled in 101 and went to all of his office hours and he helped me tremendously. I literally failed every test but he seen that I was really trying and I finished with a B. He is very understandin, IF he sees you trying. Cant wait !!
he looks like he is part of the sons of anarchy. first day of class I was shocked when I saw him. his exams are very hard and impossible to pass other than that just don't take him
I found his lectures entertaining, class doesn't drag and moves a comfortable pace as long as u print the notes ahead of time, u do need to hear and understand what he is saying more than writing down it down(stories do show up on exams). He is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. His tests r annoying cause multiple correct answers.
he knows what he is talking about. Great class, easy A if you study. you don't need a book, just read his lecture slides and study his old exams then you will do fine
If you sit from the middle to the back of the lecture hall you won't hear a word he says. The powerpoints are FULL of text and very boring. Lab was also boring and kind of a waste of time. Interesting material if you read it. Tests are composed of material from powerpoints. Go through all slides and old exams to study.
If you study past exams you'll do fine but DONT depend only on past exams bc he changes small things each year that can trip you up. Overall great professor--bonus points bc he's a metal head! He's an awesome guy who really cares about the science of biology, and u can tell just by listening in class. Take him if you can! Beware of long lectures.
If you pay attention in lecture, discussion, and keep up with the assignments you'll pass no problem. Participation is in the form of i-Clicker. He moves pretty quickly through the lectures so be prepared. Read the book. READ THE BOOK. Sometimes he pulls test questions from the book. If you can keep up and ask for help, you're golden.
U would be better off watching paint dry. This guy talks too soft and lectures get boring. Come to class n get iclicker pts. One or two questions on exam is from lecture. Unfair exams. I skipped lectures and slept in class and passed with a B. ONLY way to do well is get old exams! And also go over ppt. Textbook is useless. He is rude at times. GL!
I didn't like him or the class, but I got an A. This class is easier than Bios 100 with Malchow for sure.
Only way you prepare for his exam is to go over many old ones. Soft spoken so sit in the front! Come to lecture with ur ppt slides and listen carefully. iCliker & Participation pts (discus)! Labs were rofl easy! Do well on lab reports, presentations, problem sets, and EXAMs! Better than Bio101 w Malchow. Every little pt. counts! You got this!
He's a good professor. All you have to do is to study off of his powerpoints. That's the info that he puts on his exams. Enjoyed his class.
The class wasn't hard at all but you definitely have to put some work in to get an A. Studying powerpoints for tests is crucial. The sound system in the lecture hall did not support the size and it was hard to hear. Get there early and sit up front. His lectures are great and you can tell he's a super smart guy that's passionate about his field.
DECENT PROFESSOR. Study like crazy off the power points and practice exams if you want an a or b in his class. if not, you'll be grateful with a c.
Molumby is a super cool dude who can be intimidating at first. He's super funny in class and when you go into office hours he's more than happy to have you. Usually the question you ask ends up on the exam so it's a bonus. Practice exams are online and super helpful. Taking AP Bio before this class also makes it very easy to understand.
Bit opinionated/offensive but not demeaning or in anyway. He is respectable has a great sense of humor overall nice guy. If you can do the practice exams and study the powerpoints well easy A
Impossible to hear him during lecture unless you're sitting two inches away from him. Only way to study for his exams is going through the powerpoints and old exams. He likes to trick students on the exam so make sure you study well. Labs are a joke - it's all busy work. Better than bios 100
He was a great professor, the lectures were always very interesting. He definitely cares about the students as long as he sees you are trying. The labs are pretty easy and straight forward. Take good notes during lecture, you can honestly pass the test just off of this. He gives great examples during lecture, understand it and you'll be ok.
Hilarious lectures that keep you engaged for the full 50 minutes. Attend lectures and review these before exams, that's essentially all you need to study. Everyone says the exams are tricky, but they aren't if you know the material.... Labs and discussion are for the most part busy work which is annoying. 2 group presentations.
Such a cool guy. He once told are class to sit in a dark room with our friends and talk about death. Lectures are interesting but the material can be challenging. He does post old exams to study from and reuses some questions but be careful because he'll reword them slightly to throw you off
Best lecturer ever... I wasn't interested in biology but after the first few lectures it became my life!! He's really knowledgeable about what he's teaching and makes you love going to lectures as long as you sit in the front... Lectures are amazing BUT wish he makes exams less complicated- it would've been a perfect class.
Dr. Molumby goes off on tangents during his lectures, but at the end of them he does prove a point about the lecture material. Bear with him, because what he says could end up on the tests! And definitely focus on his Powerpoints and past tests to do well on the exams. You don't really need the book.
Too much info for a 100-level class. A lot of the points come from the TA, probably like 35-40%. Use outside resources to prepare for the exams.
Molumby is an awesome and smart professor! Lectures were amazing. Any sound issues were the result of people rudely speaking during lecture. Tests are slightly confusing and require you actually know the material, not just memorize old answers. Group presentations were horrible considering my group didn't do anything at all.
He's super cool and I really did like him. He's a really good professor and you can tell he's passionate about what he teaches. My only complaint is he talks really fast and mumbles a lot. You have to sit really close to hear him, but even then you still have to listen carefully. He goes on a lot of tangents too, which can be kind of annoying.
Alan is a super laid back and has some really funny stories to tell. Visit him during office hours and he will clear up literally everything for you, as well as make you laugh. Most points come from lab so don't worry if you mess up a test or two, because there is also an optional final. Really never had to use a book of any sort.
I'm not a biology major, but I've always been interested in Ecology & Evolution; this class was definitely enjoyable because of the professor. He is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Sit in front - not his fault the people in the back are loud and disrespectful during lecture. Would've had an A if I had done ALL my homework. HE'S FUNNY TOO. best
If you have to take Bio 101, take Molumby. If you never have to take a biology class take Bio 101 with Molumby anyway. He is an amazing professor. He brings the subject matter down to an understandable level and at the same time makes it enjoyable and even humerous. His tests are designed to test your knowledge rather than just your memory.
This beautiful man. He oozes charisma, and his lectures actually made me want to go to class. He's a decorated and well traveled biologist - but beware. Him and Dr. Brown's exams are made for you to fail. He teaches well but adds things you never expect to the exam. never got above a 65 percent in the class but with lab and lecture points got a B.
Molumby is a great teacher Cons: He doesnt speak into the mic so it can get hard to listen to his lectures occasionally. His tests are hard and assigns 2 long papers Pros: Labs are very easy. He recycles old exams so get a hold of those and youll be set to get an A in the class He is pro-evolution, so don't argue otherwise. He is understanding
If you're self-taught, this is probably a good class/teacher for you. You won't be able to hear any of the lecture unless you sit in the front row. The class is super test heavy--you need to remember every official Latin name of every species he mentions or you won't pass any of the tests. Don't expect him to be coordinated with the TA's at all.
Was enthusiastic going into BIOS101 since I heard good things about him. However, this man tends to go on a lot of rants and is hard to hear during lecture. Even worse, some exam questions will ask something random from a lecture or his poorly written slides. Rude and low-key bashes on the possibility of a god. Made me dislike ecology. Self taught
He does not teach. I sit in the front and I still cannot understand a word he is saying. It is not clear what to study for the exams. The book goes into much more detail than is needed for the course, so I'm not sure why he keeps telling us to read the book. The TA's even told me they didn't know how to answer certain q's on old exams...
Awful professor. He doesn't teach, refuses to use the mic during lecture so it's hard to hear him even if you're sitting in the front. His lecture ppts were impossibly long and you need to memorize every single word basically since he asks about weird details in his exams. Posted practice exams w/out answers on BB which were useless. Avoid him.
Not really sure what his problem is. He'll give you a problem solving question and will quickly mumble how to solve it. When someone asks him to go over it on paper, he hesitates and asks us why we couldn't just write down what he said. And he won't tell you what is on the exam. I've never had a class with such a horrible professor.
He's a pretty cool professor and you don't have to worry about falling asleep in this class. He does make a few mistakes here and there. There's a lot of homework and two presentations. But he isn't too strict and tries to make learning fun.
you don't get your grades until the end of the semester. The tests are not based on the powerpoints, and he goes on rants during lectures.
He does iclicker so you have to show up. He doesn't teach anything in class. One second he's talking about bird, go on your phone, look up again, & he'll be talking about the new Star Wars movie. I had an 89 in the class & the TA didn't round me up. Your grade truly depends on the TA. Material wise, it's a very easy class, it's like high school bio
He's a very intelligent guy, it's just he goes off tangents a lot. Because he stopped doing iClickers, I stopped going to class because I learn absolutely nothing from his lectures (and I still learn more from studying than from his lectures). And yes, you'll need to study EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of his ppts. It will be on the exam.
Don't even bother. Worst professor ever.
I don't know why he has good reviews, but this is prob the worst professor at UIC. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
He's arrogant. Tests are impossible and ask ridiculous trivial nonsensical questions. Second test was a group test yet I don't know a group who got a 100 (Though most groups got B's and A's). Doesn't know how to teach or how to run a class. Would avoid him as much as possible.
Oh boy. If you like a professor with 200+ slides on his powerpoints, with each slide being nothing but paragraphs/unformatted pictures, hes your guy. If you like unpredictable tests with fun facts, literally fun facts as the questions, hes your guy. If you like typos on everything including your own lab book, hes your guy. Worst prof ive had at UIC
I have never hated a class so much. I go to every lecture and get absolutely nothing out of it. And the book won't help either. His syllabus is all over the place so you never know what to read anyway. Good luck :)))))))))
The second exam was, for the most part, supposed to be based on genetics and evolution. Please tell me why my version of the exam was about 5% genetics and 95% information related to very specific information from exam 1 information. I understand that we should know exam 1 info, but I literally just studied your 1000 ppt slides for nothing...
I have not learned one thing from this guy all semester. He talks about the most random bs during his lectures that might end up on the test. You can't even self teach because his test question are random and his slides are all paragraphs and pictures. The only good thing about this class are the labs are VERY easy.
I've gone to almost every class, sat in the front. Tried to pay attention to his lectures and I have yet to learn a single thing from this dude. He goes on random tangents about unrelated stuff and somehow it ends up on the test. His labs are easy and there is almost no homework in the class but his lectures are a complete waste of time.
I've had enough. In class right now, hes mad at students for not showing up to his useless lectures. Moreoever, he acknoweldged that everyone is asking what in specific to study for his tests, and his response: "everything in the book and every slide on every powerpoint should be known 100%" Would be reasonable if his ppts WERENT hundreds of sides
Really bad professor. A lot of the stuff he says during lecture have nothing to do with bio and are a waste of time. His tests ask very specific questions. Powerpoints are all over 100 slides and you have to know everything for the test. On top of his terrible teaching skills, he's very ignorant and thinks he's right about everything.
Easily one of the worst classes I've ever taken. He does not teach what is needed to be taught in a biology courses. We are tested on random useless facts that are found in his 200 slide powerpoints rather than information we are going to actually need for future biology classes. I highly recommend avoiding him if possible.
Probably one of the worst Bio instructors I've had. Attending lectures is pointless as I didn't learn a single thing from listening to his rambling. The book is useless. For tests, he expects you to know every single example on his 200+ slides. Only way to "study" is memorize the answers to the previous exams and hope they actually show up on tests
Honestly take another professor, he isn't the nicest of professors t time either. Only positive is the grading scale is really easy. like a 73.5% is a B
the class was ok you need to work hard and go to class and do the practice exams ise math lena bhaiho bohath kharab kardiya ye gpa ko :(
Way too much busy work in this class. The TA grades 40-45% of your work. There is no TA grading scale so it depends on the TA grades and how strict they are. During lectures he does not usually stay on track, and it is hard to find the time useful. He showed plenty of laziness this semester on separate occasions. I did not enjoy this class one bit.
The class is out of about 415 points. Each exam is worth 80 points and you can take an optional final that could maybe replace your lowest test grade if you do good. If you do the old exams (and find other old exams from other students) and try to get all the right answers on those, the tests heavily will reflect that. Read the powerpoints a lot.
Molumby teaches a college level course, meaning he expects you to have read ahead of the lecture. No handholding/lecture is supplemental. Learned a lot. Grade is majorly your test avg. only complaint-honors student and most effort I've EVER put into a class/ even organized a study group-got a B. Will spend the next year trying to fix my GPA :/
Molumby was harsh this semester. He's a great speaker, but gets off topic very easily. You have to memorize EVERY SINGLE DETAIL on his PPs as he bases his exams off of that solely and loves to put in the worthless content (like what species has what scientific name). Exams are tough but are common sense mostly. Study up for exams & you'll be ok.
Molumby is the most awful guy at uic. he is the WORST WORST. i feel like bios 100 is much better than 100. this guy wants you to know every single detail on 200+ slides. the only part is old questions shows up in the exams but the awful part is he doesnt provide the answer key for old exams LOLOL. WORST CLASS EVERRR. AND THE TA GRADES HARSH. NO LIE
It depends of tA. T here aren't a lot of points and the hw, discussions, papers, labs are all graded by the tA and there is no rubric. I got a rough grader compared to my peers so I had to pull my weight in this intro level class. Some tests are difficult but you get an optional one at the end. I thought Moloumby was entertaining.
By far the worst professor I have had. I had him for BIOS 101 and he made the class extremely difficult and I couldn't tell you a single thing that I learned. Basically tests you on random lecture fun facts he says periodically and refuses to give answer keys to his previous exams to study for. If you can, stay as far away as you possibly can!!!
He doesn't stay on topic with his lectures nor does he project his voice. You must sit up front. This class is only about details from the slides. You do not need to bother getting the book. Unless he changes the course, you need to memorize everything. Thank goodness I had a nice TA . That may just be your saving grace. Avoid him if you can.
intesting guy and you'll learn a lot in his class but not most of it won't be what you need to pass the test. have fun memorizing 200+ slides and learning a ton of genetics on your own because he doesn't teach you it and just expects you to teach it to yourself. I reckoned getting help on the genetics if you don't know it. Do the practice test!!!
The course is structured poorly. Your grade is entirely in the hands of your TA since there is no rubric. I lucked out, but people with tougher TA's had to put in twice the amount of work I did to get the same result. Molumby gets a bad rap however. If you pay attention in lecture you'll do fine.
This guy is super cool! Its kind of hard to follow along sometimes because he talks quietly and goes off topic a lot, but I enjoyed his tangents. The tests are multiple choice and somewhat challenging because there is a lot of material and the questions are specific. However if you pay attention in class and do the practice tests you should be fine
Tests are based off of fun facts from his PowerPoint... wants you to memorize every single page of his 100+ PowerPoint. Was impossible to get an A on any of his tests. Wished there was another instructor that taught this course so that I could have actually learned something.
Molumby's BIOS 101 is a one of a kind experience. The tests are not all concept based and usually contain some examples and trivia about organisms mentioned in the slides and textbook. He is very accommodating, passionate, and overall a solid instructor. Lectures are always interesting and his digressions are often relevant.
Dr. Molumby is a passionate, knowledgeable professor. He sometimes has a little trouble 'dumbing down' certain concepts/ideas, but overall there is much to learn from him. Go to office hours and read the book. Also, study the slides because his exams are written directly from them and random fun facts from the slides will make an appearance.
Alan Molumby is the absolute worst. I'm a hardworking student- I study, I attended lectures, I participated. His lectures consist of a documentary about his life and facts that won't be on his exams. His exams test on the stupidest details that have no relation to material- literally no way to study for them. Careless, unorganized, rude, just don't
adds random facts in his test questions and problem set questions that can sometimes be relevant and sometimes not. I ended up getting lost in these and certain times even found out that he was wrong with these little facts due to new research. So I ended up ignoring these random facts and stuck to the material my grade suffered. He said "too new"
Professor Molumby is charismatic, funny, and passionate about his material. His lectures are entertaining, and he tries to make you actually interested about physiology. Despite this, if you struggle with bulk memorization you will find the tests difficult as they're mainly verbatim from powerpoints.
If you want to pass and get a good grade, just dont miss labs and lectures. it includes majority of final grade. his exams are super super thrichy
He is one of the most passionate professors you will ever find. All you have to do to succeed in the class is to be passionate and interested in the material you are learning. The lecture slides are the main source for tests. His lectures go well with the textbook. Not too hard of a class as long as you put in a decent amount of effort.
If you can sit and listen for 75 minutes straight, this is the class for you. Exams would've been hard if he didn't upload past exams he's given out. He didn't upload them until after the first exam, which is why I got a D on my first one. Two papers, but his TA grades them fair. As long as you have a LOT of sources, you'll get an A/B on them.
Dr. Molumby would go off on many tangents during class and his exams were very specific and detail oriented. Some material was from his slides, some was from what he said in class. The exams were more difficult than expected, but his suuuuper easy labs and the problem sets and presentations even the grades out. Overall an easy class.
It was hard to pay attention in lectures bc low audio, and he would go off on tangents. While he is funny & talks about interesting things, it was hard to know what was important. For the 1st and 3rd exams, I listened to the lecture captures and got A's on both. The problem sets & lab reports are very important, and they helped my grade a lot. A+
You can tell the professor really cares about his students and his field of study. He had a clear passion that affects his students. In order to pass this class you will need to sit close, listen to the lectures, review past exams, and STUDY PowerPoint. Couple of hard homework assignments. Do not wait till the last minute. Advanced bio terms used.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! LOVED LOVED LOVED his class!!! Sense of humor is killer!
Guy is like a breath of fresh air, he is so much different than other professors I've ever had. Guy is so real and laid back and down to earth. His lectures are so easy to pay attention to cus he is so passionate & full of life. He doesn't even read off the slide, he knows all this info off the top of his head and you can tell hes very invested
He is the most passionate professor you will ever meet in your life. He loves his subject and will make you love it too! In terms of studying, you have to put in the effort as you do in any other class. Exams are hard, but doable if you pay attention in lecture and read the powerpoints. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
I love Dr. Molumby I have had him for two classes 101 and 240. I received an A in both classes. He is a must have professor the knowledge that this man has is incredible and really makes you love evolution. Both these classes are AMAZING!
Dr. Molumby exudes a passion for his area of expertise & really gives a great lecture; always looked forward em because they were very memorable in a good way! Anyone can read slides but he teaches you outside of them and obviously read the material don't count on it being introduced and spoon fed this way you'd actually understand the man!
Take this professor, you have to do a bit a reading because his powerpoint have a lot of material, but if you take notes and listen while in class studying for his exams won't be too bad. He posts old exams and sometimes uses the same questions on tests but make sure you study the material bc he doesn't always use the same questions.
Prof Molumby is super knowledgeable! He clearly explains the material and gives good analogies to help you understand. His exams are very hard though! You have to look at previous exams and make sure you also study the diagrams and charts in his lectures. Make sure to take good notes because he forgets to record the lecture capture sometimes.
Professor Molumby truly is one of the worst professors I've ever had. HIs exam questions are so detail precised and he expects you to memorize over 200 slides for a 100 level class.
Professor Molumby brags how he's been using the same slides for about 18 years for his Bios101 class. He had a population that said 6 billion from the year 2000, and proudly pointed that out to prove he never changes the slides since. He expects you to study every slide. His tests are detailed. Memorize everything on his lecture slides!
Definitely one of the most intelligent professors I've ever had. Really knows his stuff. Material isn't difficult, just listen and don't ask dumb questions that are obviously on the syllabus. Super chill guy. Kinda wanna have a beer with him in the least creepy way possible.
Dr. Molumby is the WORST Biology professor I have ever had at UIC. His lectures basically consist on he talking about where he has traveled to and how climate change is affecting us. His tests are WAY TOO SPECIFIC. He expects you to memorize over 300 slides for one exam. TERRIBLE experience. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Very passionate about what he was teaching which made the class so much more interesting. Plenty of freshmen might complain about difficulty, but his class is completely fair in terms of grading. Never did any reading, but I went to all the lectures and took detailed notes. If you want an A, you need to actually put in the effort. Easy labs.
This is an extremely terrible teacher. His personality is great, but his teaching skills are preposterous. You will likely not get an A in this class even if you read every single slide in his powerpoints. He expects you to know every detail. It is unfortunate that he's making many people hate this subject, because of his extremely poor teaching.
As a normal dude I'd give him a 4/5, as a prof I'd give him a 1/5. Way too detail oriented and you have to memorize every single slide to do well on exams. His way of teaching is him babbling on about random stuff, so I'd say you shouldn't bother going to class but he also does iclicker whenever he feels like it and it will count for participation.
If you want someone that tries to trick you ON EVERY SINGLE TEST QUESTION, and wants to jeopardize your grade take this guy. His method of teaching is not helpful at all. It does not prepare you for the tests. The way he lectures is a 1 in terms of difficulty, but the test question he asks is 5 in terms of difficult out of 5.
nice teacher
I would not take this teacher if he was the only one offered at the University. Honestly, go to another school to take the class, because he's going to make it a lot more difficult than it needs to be, and every single one of his questions on his test are trick questions. You will likely second guess yourself and get the questions wrong... BOL!
His tests are a joke, they are all trick questions like its designed to make you fail. He is also so opinionated and bashes any beliefs that aren't the same as his and makes the class feel more like his own views instead of the actual science. Would never take again
Oh man, this guy... First of all, his lectures are absolutely worthless. I had a friend who never showed up to lecture and still passed the class by memorizing previous exam answers. The teacher's grading criteria for lab assignments were convoluted and ambiguous. The teacher constantly went off on tangents during lecture and fell behind on notes.
Worst professor I have ever had at UIC he expects the class to read & memorize 300+ slides for each exam which is ridiculous considering its a 100 level course he phrases the questions in way that will confuse u & make u answer incorrectly, sidetracks constantly during lecture making it difficult for students to stay focused & VERY HARD powerpoints
Dr. Molumby is final boss of Cuphead. No matter how much you try, he will crush your soul. Long live the hunchback!!!
You have to memorize 300+ slides ughhhh I felt like I didn't even learn.
He uses iClickers for attendance, which is out 20 points. He also puts a lot of clicker questions, so it's fine if you missed 2 or more lectures. The exams are very specific to his slides. NO quizzes. The labs are easy A.
Not rly sure how I feel about him. He rambles on in class about god knows what and half of the time its not even related to the class. Each powerpoint he posts has 100+ slides and he expects you to know it ALL. Good thing is exams are all based off of powerpoints buuuuut he pulls random little details from them that youre rly not likely to remember
Underrated professor, if you're trying to learn stuff that isn't necessarily on the exam. Anything on the powerpoints was fair game for the exam, but as long as you knew them you'd be good. Lectures were off topic, but very engaging. He clearly loves biology and I learned a lot of interesting stuff from him.
Labs were easy but pretty boring. 2 lab reports and 2 oral presentations. Lectures were a joke. Random tangents and 300 slides per chapter that you needed to know for the test. Final is optional. I guessed on so many questions on the test and most I've never seen in my life. Glad I'm done and escaped with a B
3 Exams, 1 Final optional to replace lowest Exam score, 2 papers on 2 journals, iclicker points and class is curved. Exams are different and not so straight forward from the lecture, there are only few questions from the lecture slides. Exams are also graded incorrectly so keep them and double check. Professor is cool. Get as many exams from friend
Molumby is just ok. It was almost comical how he rambled so much that we barely got through 5 slides during lecture, but the section was 80-130 slides long. He would often disregard use of the mic even though we were in one of the biggest lecture halls on campus. Lab was boring but easy. His exams are half common sense and half examples from slides
Just listen to what he says first. any verbal examples he gives will likely be on the exams, and then the power point serves as supplementary study material. If you don't like that kind of teaching style then you won't like him. But I liked his way of teaching, even if he does ramble a bit, and I did well in his class fairly easily.
rambles too much on things that won't help on an exam. worst professor I've had @ UIC. unless you REALLY have a passion for bio, avoid molumby.
Rambles during lecture. Anything on slides is fair game for test so you have to study a lot on your own to do good. Good if your passionate about biology but NOT a good teacher.
Super lecture heavy. He rambles on in lecture ALOT, so you have to teach yourself EVERYTHING on his +100 slide powerpoints since to him everything is fair game. For an exam this semester, he based a question off a picture caption. He is really smart, but because he's so smart he expects everyone to know what he's talking about. Study on your own!
He is SO off topic during lectures and they don't help you on exams. His exams are based off of old exams and the other questions are ultra specific from his lecture slides. He will not make any exceptions for his students if you miss a deadline. Only advantage is the class is an easy A. I forget to submit a lab report (got a 0)and still got an A.
The class was difficult for me as a nonmajor but thats more my mistake. However, Molumby is confusing as others suggest and not particularly helpful in emails/lectures. Nice guy who sometimes makes lectures interesting but probably better to hang out with than have as a prof. Couldnt stomach the idea of potential ticks for ec at a nature preserve
Dr molumby is the kind of professor that you want to get. He really enthusiastic about his jobs, and wanting his students to be friendly with nature. A real gem for anyone who knows to appreciate him.
The only thing I love about this class was no textbook needed. Yes he's funny but funny won't help you on the exams. He goes off topic so much that its hard to tell what's going to be on the exam and what's not. He won't go over everything that's on the exam which really sucks. I honestly hate this course SO UNORGANIZED. Take someone else.
Most professors are uptight, this guy isnt. Has a bit of a rebellious theme going on, which I would say is refreshing. People thought class was difficult, I didnt. He does an excellent job of holding your attention and knocking some knowledge in ya, I guess he googled how to be an effective lecturer.
He's actually a decent professor. You can tell he cares a lot about his students and that includes their grades and respect. Lectures can get boring and iclicker points matter but you can make those up easily. I liked him a lot
Dr Molumby is really passionate about his jobs. He gives out a decent amount of extra credits throughout the course to help you with your grades. Also, he would post an exam review before the test, and study guide as well. The lecture is kind of boring but just listen to what he has to said because it is going to be on the exam.
Molumby is awesome. I dont get why there are so much negative comments about him. He gives out a decent amount of extra credits, and give out practice exam before the test.
Always goes off topic. Tests are from 1 or sentences out of about hundreds of slides. Iclickers and extra credit is the only reason his lecture isn't empty everyday. He says to read the book, but everyone did fine not reading it.
Professor Molumby is a great professor. He really loves biology and his lectures are interesting and fun. With that being said, he does iClickers so you should go to class. His exams are based on his powerpoints and you'll have to basically memorize and understand like 300 ppt slides before the exam to get a decent score. Overall, he's an ok guy.
Fun guy, love his job. Lecture kinda boring, but iclickers and extra credits are helpful. Tests are fair, basically things that he talks about in lectures.
Dr. Molumby is very funny and lectures are interesting, but he tends to go off on lots of tangents. I didn't feel that lab related to lecture at all. Tests are very hard and the only thing you can use to prepare are his powerpoints. He said he "wants you to feel like you need to know everything about everything to do well".
OK so Dr. Molumby is passionate about what he teaches but he does NOT care much for his students: Pros: Lab points are easy, just show up and participate. He has a lot of iclickers and even has extra credit opportunities Cons: Not understanding of personal situations Expects us to memorize 400+ slides per exam Goes on tangents, hard to keep up w
Three midterms and optional final. Lecture was somewhat helpful and there were iClickers. Lab was interesting and pretty easy. You don't have to put in too much time outside of class except to review for exams. Exams were very specific to lecture slides.
TERRIBLE! UNORGANIZED! He will go off topics, at one point for one of our exams, he didn't go over 60% of the material in class because he goes off subject so much, that he skipped it. When asked for the exam if the chapters not gone in class was going to be on the exam he said yes. RIDICULOUS, THEN teach it well!
Molumby-- the man, the myth, the legend. I took evn. phys since I didn't want to take animal phys. Best decision of my life. His lectures are beyond hilarious, and he has a fun (read: hot) rebellious attitude going on. I have never been more excited by dinosaurs in my entire life. 11/10 prof. Hard grader, though.
Definitely not your traditional professor, but he does an amazing job anyways. Very metal/punk, and is more worried about teaching well than seeming formal. Essays and exams are hard, but you have so much fun it lecture that it cancels out. Pretty sure he could teach any subject and make it interesting.
I did not think that I would get used to the way Dr. Molumbys lectures, but he sets you up for success. Sure there are a lot slides and he tests you on specific content from a slide, but if you genuinely understand what hes talking about, his exams will be straight forward. Hes one of those professors that keeps you engaged and curious about bio
Iate to leave this rating BUT.. I took the 1st offering of this course & it was by far my fav higher level bios class. You learn so much from the way Dr. Molumby teaches & tests! If you're not doing well check your knowledge with him! He may get a bad rep but I had him for BIOS 101 too and he really is a passionate instructor who wants you to LEARN
Class is extremely disorganized hard to tell what's his opinion vs. important bio info. Basically hasn't taught any genetics material and expects students to learn it all on their own. Has tested concepts that weren't covered yet.
I'll admit that he goes off on tangents during lecture, but it's important information to know in general even if not directly related to the topic at hand. He relied heavily on the book when we transitioned to online format which made it more difficult than before since I relied heavily on the PP. Labs are simple enough. Go to class for iclickers.
Alan Molumby is literally the worst Professor Ive had at UIC thus far. Unorganized and insensitive. Lectures were useless as he spent most of his time rambling and ranting about utter nonsense. Assignments were unclear and the TAs were useless. Im honestly shocked a professor like Molumby can be this incompetent and still have a job. Trash.
Dr. Molumby is a cool guy that gives fun lectures, however, he goes on way too many tangents, and then puts the tangent in the exams. There were way too many papers, and he also did not give extensions, even though we are in the middle of a pandemic! Not very accommodating and I was disappointed by the amount of content.
Before taking this class, I saw a mix of opinions and thought "it can't be that bad!" Truthfully, this class is thus far the worst college course I have EVER taken. It is an introductory course and he treats it like a 400-level course. Labs are due every week, lectures are extremely heavy and exams are terribly hard. He simply expects way too much.
Tests were very specific. You need it watch all the lectures in order to ace them. This class will take up a lot of your time compared to other level 300+ classes.
Gives vague instructions and gets mad when you email about them. Also goes on the dumbest and most irrelevant tangents throughout his lectures and claims their relevant the topic. Communicating with him is like talking to a child who gives you unnecessary attitude about everything.
If you take this class be prepared to spend HOURS studying for it! Tests are very lecture heavy.
Please don't take him, this class requires an enormous amount of work and effort for a 100 level class. Not even my Organic chemistry 2 class had me this stressed out. His lectures are so BORING. If you have trouble sleeping then go ahead and listen to them. Also, get ready to hear his boring tangents and then be tested on them. don' take him !!!
He's nice but disorganized. His slides and lectures are long cuz he gets sidetracked. His exams are hard cuz they're so specific and have errors in them. He had TAs grade us harsher towards the end. His workload increased toward the middle/end. Lots of EC, though. Read, skim the slides, follow directions, do all the EC you can, and take good notes.
Luckily I took this class late (my junior year) so I knew all the information already. If I had not this class would have been a nightmare. Between his 40+ tangents a class and the fact that he felt the need to respond to every message in the chat led to us getting through 3 slides max per lecture. He is a great guy, just an awful professor.
Lectures were pretty fun imo. He goes on tangents but for the synchronous classes it made them more entertaining. A lot of people say he gives too much work but he had to makeup for in person's lab online so I thought it was reasonable. If you attend class, pay attention and review his slide you can easily get an A. Jamal as a TA was the best too!
He doesn't teach well. Two papers to write with non sense topics. Exams had so many typos and problems.
The class is set up for you to succeed. Easy/simple 10 question exams + labs due biweekly, 2 larger exams throughout the semester and a simple paper. He can get off topic easily but you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. Hes funny and will definitely tell you some wild stories, offer a lot of extra credit, and is very accessible.
His lectures were awful and extremely long so I just stopped going. That being said the labs are simple, the papers are pretty easy and overall its easy to get an A. Just study the ppts and read some of the book.
One of the worst professors at uic. Cares more about his own agenda then actually teaching the subject. Not very understanding so make sure to do everything on time.
Hes understanding but really confuses other! Dont take him if youve other choices
You'll have 8 unit exams. The unit exams are 10 questions 10 minutes. He expect you to study over 120 slides average and read over 60 pages in the text book. He started off this semester saying that if you do not read you will not get the A. I read, I studied.. I don't do good. His questions are worthless and way too in depth. Avoid if you can.
I usually never complain about professors but I feel that he has the capability of being a good professor but he expects too much for a level 100 class, where you basically have to apply everything when it comes to the book and the slides to the quizzes and exams and it isn't fun. During the lectures, he often goes off topic also.
Very harsh grader. Does not allow extensions. Will not allows students to makeup work or any exams (even under extreme circumstances). Not a very understanding person and thinks students must fail to succeed.
His lectures tend to go off on a lot of tangents but I found everything that he mentioned to be interesting and he was great at providing many examples and analogies. He made concepts very easy to understand and was very flexible with changing due dates and the writing assignments were very straightforward and easy.
If you can take a different BIOS 120 professor, DO IT. Don't take Molumby. For Molumby, JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HIS LECTURE SLIDES as he reads off of his lecture slides. He goes on a lot of tangents that literally don't relate to his lectures. Just make sure to do the labs. His quizzes/exams are from his lecture slides.
Prof lectures were usually off topic & did not follow the syllabus timeline ). Biweekly quizzes were 10q for 10 mins and are due no matter what & his exams were VERY detail oriented and specific. Readings were "mandatory" but i skimmed and that was more than enough. MANY extra credit opportunities. NO EXTENSIONS or late work. not as bad as ppl say.
My favorite professor at UIC by far. Molumby will go on tangents during lectures but they're fascinating, especially if you're engaged with the material. Participation matters - go out of your way to talk. Use scientific sources & construct a logical argument on the papers/exams and you'll do okay. Grades on content rather than format/grammar.
Do not take this professor. He fails no one but an a is impossible. The grading scale guarantees a c or b. Lectures were dreadful and never really taught. He does not want you to do well in the course. Exams were nothing like the practice material he does not care about ur grade he just wants you to show up to lecture for no reason.
HE IS GOOD
Not many assignments since the was so large, only minor lab assignments and 3 in-person exams. The exams contain very little of what was discussed in lecture and there would be some information from the textbook. But the TAs took pity on us and gave us a kahoot that held most of the questions on the exam. The slideshows do not carry over to exams.
Professor Molumby is intelligent, but personally, I did not find his class interesting. Everything he said made it seem like you had to just memorize facts as opposed to applying them to conceptual topics. Labs are easy points, and he does give extra credit, but do not be fooled by the amount of work that is expected of you- it's a lot.
Really not like to take his lecture because it's boring to just sit and hear. Exam questions are not related to lecture. Something key points to successful in this course: Avoid late work submitted. Read textbook and the questions. Go to TA's review sessions before exam. Do the pop-up quizzes for extra credit. Go to lab for attendance points.
The class wasn't that hard and the professor had interesting lectures. Would recommend!
Professor Molumby is a lecture-heavy teacher and expects you to read the textbook, but he is very passionate about his subject. His teaching style may not be for everyone, but he clearly loves what he does and tries to pull in star trek or star wars examples to try to make lectures more relatable. He is a good dude over all and willing to help!
The class is almost entirely based on your exam scores and lab points. There are 2 projects throughout the semester, but no other homework. He expects students to memorize 100s of slides for every exam. He also goes on random tangents every day, which got really annoying. He said he intentionally makes the class unreasonably hard to prepare us.
Professor is very good, makes lecture interesting. The class itself is very easy, the assignments are manageable, and the exams reflect the material in the powerpoints. There is a generous amount of extra credit.
Im not gonna lie, he gets a lot of hate from students but if you listen when he speaks you will do fine. If not and you get distracted (like i did sometimes) his study guides are super useful. They'll help you nail every question on the exam. Plus his jokes and side tangents are funny and entertaining.
His lectures are LONG. He teaches 100 slides per unit. His exams are easy depending if you do the practice exam because the questions are really similar. He is very kind if you have any problem. Go to his office hours.
you either love him or hate him. personally, I loved learning from him. yes, he goes on tangents, the lectures are long, but if he's anything he's real. Molumby is full of so much knowledge and you can easily tell that he is passionate about what he teaches its so endearing. there aren't many profs like him here. cherish it, it is so refreshing
Molumby is the best teacher I've had at UIC. He is passionate about what he's teaching making it easy to learn the course material. The lecture material was exciting, and I looked forward to attending class. Great conversations during class and cares about his students. Show up and pay attention, you'll do fine. Exams were difficult.
A lot of people don't like him because he is a bit eccentric, but he is very passionate about what he teaches and a really nice guy, so just be respectful. If you pay attention and study, you will be fine. It seems like a lot of material but its not bad at all. I loved his class and he made the material interesting
The class itself is not extremely difficult for a 100-level science class, especially considering lack of mandatory attendance. Grading scale is also easy. However, the slides by themselves are difficult to take notes off of (content-heavy, misspellings, unreadable diagrams), and the lectures are boring and often get off-track.
He's an interesting guy, and is really passionate about his work. Ive only been to 2 full weeks of his lectures, I stopped going because he rambles a lot. This class is really easy. No homework, one essay, one group project, and some other small assignments, three exams plus an optional final. The class was also curved 5% (85= A) Take him!
Exams were just like the reviews and what he mentions in class. Great professor and is a super down to earth guy loved going to his lectures.
He's definitely a character and is really passionate about his work. His slides are filled with content. This class had one essay, one group presentation, and some other small assignments, three exams plus an optional final. He rambles a lot in class, but it does relate to the lecture. Sometimes in the beginning of class he will give extra credit.
Great professor, would take his class again!
He's one of the best professors you'll ever meet. Instead of taking notes, I recommend sitting in class and truly listening. He emphasizes understanding over memorization and shows he cares. Anyone who takes his class should feel lucky and privileged to be taught by him.
Dr.Molumby is a great man. The course design is not organized. Lectures are a big yap session which I didn't mind at first, but that leads us to being "behind in terms on content". Towards the end of the semester it got annoying. Due dates change often. There are pop quizzes which is just drawing a graph or listing five facts from an article
I never met Professor Molumby, but I think he's a great professor. His lectures are detailed with extra information, which some may find as rants but are related to the material. His assignments aren't difficult but they're time-consuming, so make time. The tests are related to the course/ slides/ readings. There's a "textbook" that's used for lab.
BIOS120 with Professor Molumby was a breeze. Most of the material on the exams is on the slides. He doesn't do clickers, and he gives students the option of joining lectures through Zoom, but I would recommend going in person because he gives a lot of extra credit pop quizzes. He also offers an optional final that replaces your worst exam score.
Easy class. Labs are literally a breeze. There are no clickers or attendance, but sometimes he does extracredit pop quizzes on bb. 3 exams plus optional. Just memorize the slides or look at past exams if you have. for labs they made us buy a lab manual but we didn't even use it so i recommend asking your ta the first week of lab. overall easy A!
Prof. Molumby made a subject I didn't really care about into a very enjoyable experience. His lectures are full of information, and it took me some time to get used to his teaching style. The class is an easy A, with a lot of extra credit points and plenty of ways to improve your grade. Probably the best professor I had this semester.
I have never had such an excellent professor. His lectures were connected to real-life examples, making the material more relatable. He truly understands his students and is a caring educator. I learned so much in this class and now have a deeper understanding of biology.
full-time yapper and i gave up coming to lectures ,,,, he is the king of yaps,,,,, not my type of professor but its a fairly easy class
prof is not that good. def D1 yapper and talks about random stuff during lectures which made me give up and would never go to his lectures. I would still pass all of the exams and everything was super easy. However if you are in need of extra credit you must go to his lectures but he won't tell you when he gives it out. overall would take it again
Be prepared to read through his thorough slides but overall workload was reasonable. However, he is not forgiving when it comes to late assignments. He will not care if it's a family emergency or mental crisis which makes me question how students with disabilities or personal struggles can manage his class.
Overall the material isn't difficult, just offered in large quantities. Attendance is not mandatory with the option of Zoom, but I would encourage attending in some form bc he highlights information for tests. Exams were all multiple choice but can get confusing as he offered many different answer selections. Lecture-based study the presentations.
Attendance isn't required, but please just go to class. 90% of the Exam material comes directly from lecture, and labs are basically graded on participation. If you show up and pay attention you'll do fine, even if you don't do all the extra reading. If you need extra help, meet with your TA! They are really good this year.
The man is a saint. He's very communicative and understanding with his students, and his lectures and the slides he presents may be dense, but they are very informative. It seems like a lot, but the study slides posted pre-exam help A LOT. Molumby was one of my most helpful UIC professors, and he has wicked metal t-shirts.
One of the best professor I've had so far. It makes such a difference when you can tell the professor loves what he lectures about. Gives open note extra credit quizzes once a month in class. Attendance optional but definitely recommend going to listen to his tangents and watch him pace around the room. Almost no homework so it is a unique class.
He's a nice professor, talks a LOT. You can study off the slides and not go to lecture. He offers lots of extra credit opportunities for those who do go and class workload is okay. No late work accepted at all. Labs have lots of group work. Overall, class was a breeze and I probably would not take him if I actually had to learn the material.
He doesn't keep his blackboard organized, which makes trying to catch up on material or assignments difficult. Adding on, he steers off-topic very frequently and ends up talking about how he dislikes a certain political stance and discredits White/European scholars from the past. The labs are okay. Mainline is that needs organization
honestly he was a very good professor .He is funny and does care about us and the the topics and is clearly very passionate. The class was not hard few assignemnts scattered througought the course and an online optional final exam. He gives study guides and a practice quiz to prepare for exam which is really helpfull.
KING of yapping. He frequently goes off topic, so I advise just joining the zoom calls. Random extra credit pop quizzes; bad organization online- so assignment due dates are often confused. Lab is boring and unorganized. To get an A, just study powerpoints, study guides, and practice exams. P.S. I wouldn't bother reading the assigned readings
Goes off topic a LOT. He's nice and understanding but the class is kinda just a mess. Labs are boring and disorganized. His Blackboard is almost impossible to navigate. His exam questions are worded weirdly The material isn't too difficult; there's just a lot of it. Going to lecture isn't really necessary. Just study the slides.
holy yap. he could be a great prof if he managed to stay on topic for like five minutes. blackboard is super unorganized and i have to drag myself to lab. read the lec slides on ur own time bc they're helpful and do the practice exams.
terrible experience, pop quizzes (extra credit) are nice but the study guides is general for 200 worth of slides. Sometimes 1 unit has 2 slides (with 100+ slides each) This makes it harder for me who has to review for other classes. I don't have 5+ hours every day to read his slides as a commuter, with part time job, & extra curricular activities.
HORRIBLE! I should've dropped the class, exams are nothing like practice exams and study guides. Not a good professor, just yaps and always behind. Has pop quizzes for each month for extra credit but it barely helps tbh. lecture isn't mandatory to go BUT EVEN IF YOU GO IT BARELY HELPS BECAUSE WHAT THE HECK AM I LISTENING TO. All self taught :(
He is a good person, however he tries to use references from movies or books (I guess?) to relate them to coursework which I have trouble connecting. There are a lot of slides which are all over the place. The blackboard is super messy and by far the worst part of this class since everything is tranferred from previous semesters and unorganized.
guys like i genuinely think he has something against charles darwin.
literally NO. He is literally such a bad professor, I would NOT recommend him if you don't want to tank your GPA. He literally just yapsssss all through the lectures. Also, no extra credit (the only extra credit you can really get is from the pop quizzes), and he does not accept late work, so I do not recommend procrastinating. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Decent professor. Goes on tangents a lot about the most random things like StarTrek but keeps the class engaged very well but not in the best way. Everything he says in lecture isn't even on the exam I would just use Zoom instead. Lab attendance is the only time attending is mandatory. Have to study all the slides for the exam, makes no sense.
Professors is hilarious. Lectures go in depth into politics and philosophy of science. Molumby is very passion about what he teaches, even if it is outside the scope of what you will be graded on. Only go in if you feel you have a passion for what he is talking about. People either really love him or just dislike him due to lack of interest.
u dont have to go to his class at all. exams are rly easy to cheat on lmao. lowk js gotta go to labs and theres also no post labs. pretty easy class. no curve.
