i hate your class, it sucks and it's hard, and you're boering
Parman has a very BORING teaching style. He reads off of the overhead Verbetum and doesn't really do much other than that. I passed the class with an A- and I slept through most of it!
If you are looking for an easy credit, this is an excellent class to take. He reads off of the overhead, gives you a COPY of his slides, and then lets you have a cheat sheet for the test! Attendance is required because there is usually an assignment every class, but if you can handle sitting through his monotone voice, this is the easiest class!
Fairly easy class. His lectures consist of powerpoint slides. He gives you a copy of the notes and you follow along. Tests are tough but you can use a 5x8 card. Tests are graded on a curve. Interesting subject and I learned alot. Very nice guy. Highly recommend this class if you need a science credit!
For Environmental science, i either slept or played sudoku, and most of the time i left early. Very easy A.
His teaching style is boring, but he has everything on powerpoint and even prints everything out for his students so you can easily follow along and do not have to write much. He wants weekly current topic report about a article you read related to class. For exams he lets you have a little cheat card, but you have to write it. Very helpful!!
Just like the other posts said, this class is easy, everything on PPT. DON't Waste 100 bucks on the book, you will never need it, he gives you copies of everything. Good and easy class. Teacher keeps you updating you on your progress.
great guy very smart easy to relate to
He's pretty good! And he's a funny guy. You'll like him.
He's a great professor! id recommend him to anyone taking bio. he gives plenty opportunities to receive extracredit too =D
Parman is a good professor, he provides power points for all of his lectures, which makes it really easy to pass the class. I rarely used my text. Don't take a morning class, his lecture will put you to sleep. The only thing I did not like was his condescending tone. He treated us like primary school children, however, some people deserved it.
no comment
Reading the book and regular attendace are both helpful, but not vital to passing the course. His lectures are well structured, but the lab leaves something to be desired. He is a funny guy and passes out extra credit like candy! By far one of the better classes i've taken.
Best biology professor. He lets us use a notecard for each exam (some exams are difficult) and provides a lot of extra credit opportunities. He provides ppt notes which are very helpful. Highly recommend him.
Easy course
He knows what he's doing but there's everyday lecture quiz and lab starter quiz. You need to study his lecture everyday so you know what's going on and his exams are so hard, there are 100 questions for each test and also have 5 questions extra credit. You want to get an A you should study everyday
Professor Parman is awesome!I loved this class. He's a big time biology nerd and very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He brings up interesting facts during his lectures If you're interested in biology you should definitely take his class. His exams can be kind of hard though, so make sure you attend lectures.
he is hard ! you have to study a lot
I'll try to keep this short and sweet.Don't buy the textbook or lab book - everything comes from his powerpoint which you must print out. Labs are based off his handouts which you draw/write on and turn in. 5 exams. He allows you to use 1 3x5 notecard so the smaller you write the better. 10 quizzes. Tons of info and he speeds thru lecture and lab.
Professor Parman was very nice and helpful to all students. He knew everyone's names and explained the material clearly. He wasn't annoying to listen to at all, even though the course material was very boring. Strongly recommend taking Biology 1000 with him! He's one of the bests.
I loved his class. he is very clear with lectures. but you have to study hard for his test and quizzes. you don't have to buy the books at all.
I would never take biology with Mr. parman. he is clear with his lectures but when it comes to test or quizzes he changes. don't take this class if you want to fail
Don't take this class with him. he changes a lot in test and quizzes. he is very unclear with his lectures. shouldn't take him
Very tough teacher I had to study real hard to earn the A. His exams are 100 questions. He gives quizzes all the time and gives a lot of extra credit. You have to make sure you understand everything clearly for his exams because he asks about everything. If you take this class you need a lot of time to study don't take hard classes with him.
Nice professor. Fair one. Test are little hard, but if u study not at all. Sad that some student rate him so bad. The college is for studying, not for coming and having fun and getting great grades without studying. I recommend him 100% if you want to learn and not forget what you have learned........ I will miss him.
Based all of the exams off of lecture notes. TRIED to make the class more enjoyable. Even brought in timbits for the whole class one day! Extremely fair, great teacher, and a great guy. If you study, you will do very well. No trick questions on test. Really cares about your grade.
If your taking bio 1000 I highly advise Parman. Although his tests are hard, if you study the way he tells you to, you'll do just fine. His lectures are enthusiastic & he'll help you in anyway he can. Make sure you go to both lecture & lab, it's important to understand the material. Hope you enjoy him as much as I did!
If you actually like biology then you should probably find a different teacher.
this is a really difficult class for anyone who struggles with biology. the class is ALOT of work to the point where it can be really hard to keep up with. Parman is a funny guy but lectures were unbearably long and boring. he also makes you print the powerpoints(the key to passing tests) at home so be prepared to spend money on printer ink.
Professor Parman was very helpful, we had many quizzes but he always offered to make them up for half credit, he has a good sense of humor and really seems to want to help his students, I did fail the class but that wasn't because of him I did not have the time to do the studying needed to pass, this class is ALOT of work but definitely passable!
His power points weren't very useful for studying before a test. This class requires a lot of studying. A lot of assignments.
I love this professor. Wish he taught all of my courses. This class wasn't extremely difficult. He tells you exactly what's going to be on quizzes and exams. All tests are multiple choice with scantrons. Extra credit offered. Explains everything in great detail. Final exam is optional. If you don't pass that means you didn't try at all.
Doesn't explain or help . Expects that you understand his lecture from the first time and he will not give you anything to help
I encourage you to take a different professor. DONT TAKE HIM!!!! you will fail
There is a ton of work in his class but he is a good teacher. Lectures are very clear but you definitely have to spend some time studying for the tests. Not hard material just a bit of work. Plus he offers a pretty good amount of extra credit. If you like biology you will do fine!
Mr. Parman is an awesome professor and I learned a lot in BIOL 1010. However, an overwhelming amount of material was presented to my class and I felt like I could never study enough. I had to work hard for the B+ I earned. If you are considering taking this class, form study groups and prepare to abandon your social life.
Quizzes are clear and easy. The tests don't go with the material we are taught and are not easy. He tells you to read the book so you can pass the tests but the test questions are not taken from the book or from the power points. Talks way too much and over explains the easy things but goes right over the difficult material, which is not helpful.
Lectures are very long and boring, he put me to sleep multiple times. powerpoints must be printed if you hope to keep up. the book is pretty much useless, I got better studying out of Crash Course on YouTube. The quizzes and lab tests are fairly easy as long as you were paying attention, but major tests are completelydifferent from what was covered
The only time I've ever actually had to read the whole book and study. Stick to the basics with names and specific things within their group. QZs and Tests are tough. You get lots of EC, he drops 1 low Qz and can replace a low test if you do better with the final. PPTs are long and boring. Had him for 1000 and 1010. 1000 was easy with bio basics.
Alan rocks! He's a very nice teacher and he usually brings in food at the end of the semester for the students. His expectations are realistic - science requires a lot of studying and reading and effort. He's not afraid to call you out if he thinks you're being lazy. Overall cool guy. The only thing I would say is maybe some lectures were boring
HE is a nice prof, but he gives a lot of hard assignments. By the end of the semester almost everyone in my class drooped the subject. His quizzes are fine, but exams are tough.. i past this class with B-, which is not fair to the amount of time i spent studying for this class.... take another prof... trust me.
Professor Parmans is a great professor. I really learned alot & it helped me prepare for Micro. There was alot of memorization for this class, but it was a class where even if you don't get an A you still would walk out knowing alot because he prepares his students really well. I recommend him only if you have time to study well. Overall hes cool.
The type of professor that thinks you are only taking his class. Extremely time-consuming class, take my advice and take a different teacher. Although I respect tough teachers because you will learn more, he is just too much! Like I said great teacher but countless quizzes, HW, tests and exams. COUNTLESS
great professor! I really enjoyed his class, labs were fun! I usually dread labs but his were easy. he gives lab starter quizzes that are an easy way to earn points. all his quizzes are pretty easy, exams can be tough but not if you study and use his powerpoints!!! if you take good notes during his lectures you really don't even need the book
Parman is a good teacher. I took him in the fall and got an A. He offers extra credit and drops your lowest quiz and test, which is nice. If you read the book and study the PowerPoints and lab exercises, you will do fine.
Do not take this professor, unless you aren't working and are prepared to spend multiple hours studying to receive a b at most. I spent a total of 9 hours studying for the lab practical to receive a 56%. He tests on the unofficial current version of taxonomy which he revised and writes all of his own tests, no curve even if half the class fails
Took this class alone as it was the only class available since I am three classes shy of graduating and failed! This professor is HARD!! he makes his own tests/quiz's and lab practical! Dont take him!!! YOU will fail! dont even bother buying the book! your better off studying from the ppt's! he is all about the phylogenetic tree! avg grade is a c!
Plenty of options for extra credit. He gives a quiz after two chapters and a test after four chapters and a midterm and final. Lab is the required book. In lab you have starter quizzes where you need to preread the material, lab end quizzes every 4-5 exercises, and midterm and finals. Some times he goes off topics, but he really enjoys teaching.
At least 2 hours of studying for every 1 hour of lecture. You have a quiz after 2 chapters of lecture and another after the next 2 chapters, then you have a 4 chapter exam. Before every lab you have a quiz, and after so many of those you have a combined quiz. Lab practicals are hard. He is fast paced, if you don't ask questions he moves on asap
I liked him as a person... but definitely not as a professor. The amount of tests and quizzes he handed out was outrageous, sometimes wed have 2 in one day. So many people dropped or failed the course. I'd advise you you to stay clear of him and take a different professor just for your own sanity...
Of course Bio is no easy class, but this professor is extremely test heavy. It's difficult to focus on this course while working or taking 2 other classes. The Lab practicals are easy, but his exams can be really tough (100 questions). You have a starter quiz for each lab, a lab review quiz, and lecture end quizzes. Decent guy.
I took Prof. Parman my first semester at MCC. He is a great teacher. He always tries to help out the ones who are struggling. Gives a lot of extra credit, you just have to be interested in earning those extra points. What I somewhat disliked about this class were the lab practicals, however even those weren't that bad in the end. He's a good choice
Parman is very good at explaining things to you like you are stupid. You will have to put in a lot of time, but if you do there is no reason why you cannot get an A.
Professor Parman's Bio class was definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken at MCC. I definitely could tell that he is passionate in this subject and he really tried his best in making sure everyone passed his class. As long as you study, go to class everyday, ask questions and do as much extra credit as you can, he'll work with you.
Great, enthusiastic teacher, willing to help outside of class in office visits. Loves what he teaches. Classes very test heavy. Requires a lot of study time and dedication but a great professor if you really want to learn.
He is a very nice professor, but he gives SO MANY tests and quizzes. Sometimes 2 in one day. Most college students take more than one class and are working and he expects biology to be your main focus.
Honestly he is horrible. dont even bother i think any professor would be better than him we had an exam on a wednesday and on monday we were learning things that were in a totally different chapter that wasnt even going to be on the exam on wednesday, id advise you to stear clear of this professor if you dont want a bad grade!
If you care about biology and not the phylogenic tree, he is not the professor for you. I read chapters in the book and the only thing that seemed to be on the tests and quizzes had to do with that tree. He moves fast, which causes the tests and quizzes to be CHAPTERS behind of what he's teaching. I advise not taking him at all.
Solid as an individual. The kind of guy that knows its your problem, not his, so he isnt worried. Hes very good at lecturing and will use every minute of the 2 hours before the lab. Tests werent the easiest and if you miss one day, youre definitely behind. Lab was made interesting because he seems to genuinely like teaching biology.
People aren't exaggerating when they say he gives loads of tests/quizzes. So if you often get test anxiety, haven't developed efficient studying skills, or have a thriving social life you'd like to keep intact -- then his class might just kill you. Other than that, I'd say it's worth it in the end because you'll definitely learn a lot. Good luck!!!
Mr Parmans BIOL 1000 class covers a lot of material and requires that you devote 5-10 hours per week outside of class to study so If you are just looking for some science credits you should probably take another class. Mr Parmans single best quality is his knowledge of the material he teaches, so if you really want to understand biology take him
Mr. Parman was an extremely tough professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU ARE A LAZY STUDENT. Only take him if you want a challenge and want to actually learn the material. However, he is not good at planning and for our semester he gave us too much time between tests and we ran out of time, so we had to rush through the material in the end.
Professor Parman makes it very easy for you to pass this class if you are willing to put in the work. He gives you study suggestions that 100% work. Lectures are thorough and everything on exams is in the lectures. He is helpful and gives quick response via email to any questions you have.
He gives quizzes and EXAMS every single time
if you are lazy and can't memorize 95 power point a chapter, do not take him. he is ridiculously hard and yes you have quizzes all the time about everything you do.
Is very condescending and will constantly tell the class you will fail. Speeds through lecture and is very exam and quiz heavy. Offers many extra credit opportunities but also never puts them in. DO NOT TAKE IF NOT WILLING TO SELF TEACH!!!
Biology 1000 is not an easy class. But Professor Parman gives you every opportunity to pass. That being said, he understands it's your problem, not his. Lots of quizzes and tests. People complained about them but they have a lot of weight so if you bomb a test you're still okay. Lots of extra credit, does his best to make sure you pass the course.
I have previously taken this class and i would never in my life recommend it. I am an A student and it was crazy, quiz the first day of class.
This class was very tough. I would never recommend. only 3 people got an A. he teaches like uni. very ridiculous
Great as a person and instructor, but bad at giving info for tests and quizzes. Expects us to go thru almost 500 powerpoint slides each test and doesn't provide study guide to at least help us. Most of the info on the test were in the text book and not the powerpoint. No need to buy lab book cuz we didn't use it. Too much material and info.
very wonderful professor. you just have to read and keep reading. not an easy A to be honest but I worked for it. Explains very well and will never forget when he teaches. i never used the textbook just his powerpoint.A lot of quizzes infact everyday is either a quiz or an exam. BE PREPARED
Alan Parman is not a good person, as a teacher he explains everything well and as long as you study youre good. Exams are extremely hard, but alan is a very good looking man so it all evens out
First off his lectures are far too long, 70-100 slides/powerpoint. I don't even believe he would get through them if we were in class. He administers quizzes and tests every week (summer course). He gives a bunch of 1 point assignments that take 15-20 minutes/assignment. Honestly, I have to juggle assignments, due to the amount of points received.
He was the worst professor I've ever had, he is very unclear/unorganized with the course schedule, I highly recommend dropping if you can.
He basically makes you teach yourself the information, how is it that I paid for a class to be taught, and I'm teaching myself, I might as well become a BIO professor.
He just seems to think it's ok to just tell us 1-2 weeks in advance for exams, he is very unorganized and makes me question his ability to teach.
Pro. Parman is a great professor! I see a lot of negative feedback of his courses, probably because of a heavy work load. I feel like he is making us getting used to medical school life which I am fine with it. If you love challenges and the sense of accomplishment, you will like his class.
While Biology is hard, its harder online especially with this professor's way of "teaching". While he does give very lengthy powerpoint's with audio explanation, it's still not helpful at least to me. You basically teach yourself. Some of the exams and quizzes questions are VERY specific. No one in my class scores the highest score on them.
Professor Parman in my opinion was a great professor, hes super nice & cares about your grades. If you do the homework and study for your tests youll pass just fine! Even though biology is tough and especially online, he helps you get through it all!
If you don't have anything in life, then take this professor. He thinks all his students are free just for his homework and studying for his lessons 24/7. He does not teach at all, but makes you read the textbook, long 2 hour PowerPoints, and hard tests I barely got my grade up... so don't take him. TERRIBLE.
Professor Parman is incredibly annoying and comes off condescending. However if you can get past his personality his class is rather doable. His quizzes and exams come straight from his power points there is never a question he hasn't covered. Biology is a lot of work and a lot to understand. yes the slides are 70-100 pages long, but that's biology
I've only had this professor for a few weeks but I dislike the way he gives instructions. I can understand being a tough, no nonsense teacher but he comes off like he resents his students and can't be bothered to answer certain questions. He doesn't explain his instructions as well as he should and just has an unfriendly tone.
Super nice dude but doesn't know how to teach. The class is harder than it needs to be. He also doesn't double check his work. On tests, quizzes, and homework people have caught him with mistakes. He gives points for stuff he messes up on but not all points are given.
Was very upfront with what he required of students. He gives a heavy work load and covers a lot of material. There was not a lot of opportunities to get your grade higher later on in the course.
Here is the run down. Prof P is cut throat and I mean CUT THROAT. However, if you read actually read the chapters and slides, you will pass. MAKE SURE YOU READ BEFORE DOING ANY HOMEWORK. He is easy to get a hold of, but this is a class that you'll have to put in a lot of effort to pass. Getting an A is not impossible, but it is a weeder class!
His class is pretty easy; you have some assignments every week on McGraw Hill Connect as well as 2-4 labs every week but those are done on Connect too so they are honestly not all that bad and you have endless tries to get 100%. 5 exams 1 optional exam, 4-5 lab quizzes and 2 lab practical exams but all in all an 85% or higher is easily obtainable.
Professor Parman is a straight shooter. He gives lots of homework, a lot of reading, long PowerPoints; its doable though. Assignments/labs were done through Connect. Good Luck!
A lot of work for an online class but as long as you do the readings and lectures, you'll pass. The tests were a little difficult because sometimes they had nothing to do with what we were learning and you don't have much time to complete the tests either. However, I liked professor Parman, he was easy to reach and was always willing to help.
He was a bad Professor.
Parman is a good professor, he responds to emails very quick and will help if you need it. He sends out reminders the day before and the day of exams so if you have any trouble you can contact him. I will say his exams are timed and i ran out of time alot and that did effect my grade. homework is manageable, labs are super super easy.
Want 13+ assignments per week? And more assignments in person on a hybrid schedule? This is the prof. for you. Gives out assignments without even teaching them himself. Get ready to teach and read by yourself for your grade.
if you learn better by teaching yourself you will excel in this class but if you do not you will have a very difficult time. His exams are mostly trick questions.
Worst professor ever! My first year of college, he made me feel like college is worst and i will never pass any classes! His class was hard, and exams are more hard! No clear instructions!!
I would never recommend this professor if you are taking the Bio 1000, this man does not know how to use the browser, he sets up test and gives us a time to complete and doesn't update the test settings, also is not clear or with the lectures. I would not recommend.
Professor Parman is a challenging teacher and many of his assignments could be overwhelming. There was a 3 day period we had 17 assignments due, however, the class is very rewarding. If you put the time in, work hard, and reach out for help from the prof. you will do fine. Prof Parman is super nice, easy to reach, and always happy to help
Although the class is primarily graded by tests and exams, he will provide you with all the information for them and even host review sessions telling you test answers. No lecture HW, but there are pre and post-labs for easy points. Lab practicals are easy as he shows you the exact slides that will be on them all. 10/10 recommend.
The labs for this class weren't bad, I actually enjoyed them for the most part. What I didn't like about this class was the excessive reading outside of class that didn't have anything to do with the content in class. Professor Parman doesn't give any reviews for his exams and they hardly have the material that you cover in the readings.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. WORST PROFESSOR TO HAVE. HE SHOULD RETIRE. he doesn't know how to help and expects you to know what everything is. i took a BIO TO INTRO and that was the hardest thing in my life. i love biology but he made me hate my life and biology. i'm warning you, don't take parman, you'll hate yourself.
He doesn't care about your success and aims to trip you on on exams and quizzes by testing what he thinks you aren't studying. He gets happy when you don't expect something on an assessment and struggle because of it. There are endless quizzes and assessments and you must study and memorize all of the powerpoints for a hope of a decent grade.
On the very first day, he told us that 1/4 people would pass. Geez, way to motivate us. Second of all, he's always making jokes that are very inappropriate! This was supposed to be a lecture, but he makes us go through PowerPoints and teach ourselves at home and then go to his class so he can chill while we do assignments. I do not recommend him!
Parman has a terrible personality. Sometimes he makes jokes and they make me feel sorry for him. How did I get an A in his class? I sold my soul. If you're into that then take his class. Test heavy, tells us that most of us won't pass (bro cmon), there's 2 quizzes daily. YOU TEACH YOURSELF he lectures a couple times. NO. BLEH. NEVER AGAIN.
I dont know why people in these reviews are being so cruel, he is such a great guy! The class is not hard at all, and all the homework is online through the book, yeah there is a lot of work but if you're on track you'll pass with an A. Dont listen to these comments if you are fairly a good student you'll do great!
Don't recommend this professor at all; you will not have a life outside of his class. Either way, even if you study all day, you will still fail his tests, He gives loads of homework that is very time-consuming. I understand bio is hard but he just makes it more difficult than it already is. His teaching techniques are not helpful either.
If you have him, study off his PowerPoints, not the book. I had realized too late how different the information is from the book compared to his PowerPoints. If you try to study off his in-class discussion assingments only, you will not do better than a c on the major tests. You have to study every thing word for word, this is not an exaggeration.
This professor to difficult.. Every day he takes exam in the class, I don't recommend this professor, If you want to get good results and grades then don't take this professor's class..
If you want a blow-off science course, DON'T take this class. You get a lot of homework and reading, but it pays off. There are quizzes every day and several chances for extra credit. If you're normally a good student and are interested in a career science-related, you'll get between an A/B+. Study his notes and assignments and you should be fine
First off pretty much all of the bad reviews are accurate, his class is insanely test heavy. His exams reflect nothing from the textbook, and I even studied his ppts. (which were 100-200 slides each) and never got higher than a B on the exams simply because they were wack, and for the record, I am a straight A uni student!
At one point, four of my uni classes TOGETHER were easier than this course. Also, the professor is lowkey kind of racist I think. I was born and raised in America, however my nationality, or my parents' background is not American, still prof parman spoke to me as if I couldn't understand a word of English. English is the only language I speak.
Told the class on the first day that 1/3 of his class normally fails. He is very exam heavy and his tests are most of the time unfair and didn't reflect the material or textbook with some questions. Genuinely my least favorite professor I've had at Macomb. I would recommend taking another professor if possible or be ready to have a rough semester.
Was in his class for 2 weeks and decided to drop and take a different prof. He started my class off the first day by telling us that 1/3 or 2/3 of his class normally fails and if you have any other classes with this one to drop them. Terrible way to start a semester. His teaching techniques are also not the greatest. Heed people's warnings.
I noticed that students who had been in HS bio recently did better. Think of this class 2 classes, lab and lecture I also noticed that he gave EC if you put more info on the packet, rather than just filling in the blank. To his credit, He goes over with your class to the library to work through the practice practicals
The class itself isn't too bad. This teacher just wasn't it for me.
Not recommended!
It isn't bad but the deadlines are close to one another. You'll have one lecture quiz Tuesday and then one Thursday. You'll have 100 question exams 7 times in one semester. He tops other chapters and work the same week in which should be a grace period to study. You have a full time job, this class won't be easy. If you have another class, pray.
It is a bit more work heavy than most courses, and his lectures can be a bit confusing, but he is always willing to help and he is a great professor if you are willing to put in your all.
Save yourself; this class is impossible. The workload is insane, and the prof. doesn't make it any easier with his lectures/teaching style. Take this class with literally anyone else.
good luck if you have this class. you have quizzes every single day, exams almost every week and a half, you basically have to teach yourself and its just impossible. so every class is a quiz right, that means you will have to read immediately after the next quiz and next. and the power points as well. you will study 24/7
If ur taking his class be ready to spend every waking moment studying and even then it's not gonna be enough to get an A. He purposely makes exam questions so hard that even if u know the material you'll still be extremely confused. Doesn't give study guides. Also Waste of time to do in person he only does 15-20 min lectures in a 2 hr class period
AVOID HIM OR COOK
Just avoid him or take this course again.
