If you love art history, he is an amazing teacher. He's tough but passionate.
very easy to look at during those long classes
Take v. good notes-enthusiasti-interesting-friendly-amusing-knowlegable-cute ;)
Very well informed teacher. Take lots of detailed notes!!!
Take v. detailed notes, follow the study guide/review.
My fav class yet. Interesting lectures;keep up & the class is easy/interesting
I love this teacher because he has been every place that he has talked about. He also is very very smart. His lectures are so interesting!
i HATED this class. he has cool slides because he's been everywhere, but that is the best i can say for him. the art was cool, the teacher was not!
i absolutely loved this prof the 1st time i took him- im in my 4th class of his- he's challenging but if you study and take good notes and take the class seriously then its not so hard... he's very easy on the eyes and very approachable with any questions
1)take notes 2)don't show up late or try to sneak out 3)don't ask about dates or spellings (they're in the book). If you do this, you'll be fine.
He makes learning art fun and interesting. Take good notes and don't worry about dates, he'll let you know if it will be on the test. Go to class and do your critical reviews and you should have a passing grade.
This guy knows his art history. It was a fun and really hard class
i really liked this professor. at first, it's hard to take notes but just listen and you will get the hang of his lectures. definately read the book. professor pizer is extremely smart, interesting and knows his art. plus he's really hot. don't be late or leave early.
Alan Pizer is a very well informed, entertaining helpful professor. He might be a bit difficult when it comes to testing, but he makes up for it in an amiable personality and a sincere desire to help the individual student and one can tell he has a real love for the material he teaches.
He writes the most rude and discouraging comments. After having him I want nothing to do with ART in way shape or form. His comments are just so cold and callous. I really looked forward to to taking this class, but that changed real quick. HATED this class in the end!
one of the best professors on campus. definitely NOT one of the easiest but there are no surprises on his tests but he made me care about something i had no interest in to begin with. be ready to memorize slides of art. he puts everything you need on blackboard and does his best to answer questions.
Alan Pizer will blow you away with his vast knowledge of every subject. He is EXTREMELY fair, intelligent, and he is so funny and has such a good nature, that even the (what I consider) boring subject of Art History is entertaining and fun. On top of that, he looks like Clark Kent! Take his class!
Very smart, interesting, passionate, credible, nice, helpful, hot:)The only reason class is hard is the huge amount of material he has to cover.Just memorize the slides which he'll give you, DON'T be late.Oh,sometimes he loses train of thought, very funny :)

This guy knows his****. Very passionate, makes everything interesting.
He's a bit of a snob, but once you get to know him, he's an ok guy. Class is hard though. LOTS of memorization
his tests are brutal. horribly brutal. he's really nice and funny and sincerely interested. i just wouldn't recommend this class for the casual art enthusiast (aka me) because it will absolutly blow you away. it's really very difficult and intense.
class is fun.. very informative.. he's pretty humorous as well.. overall good class
boring
Great teacher, he loves his job. MUST attend all of his classes, don't be late, and read the chapters. Not an easy A, but acheivable. He is willing to help, all you have to do is ask.
Not an easy A but do the notecards and a B isn't hard. His slides are everything forget the book and go to class. He's crazy strict about attendance and tardiness, he locks the door 10 mins into class!
He is a very tough professor when it comes to content. He expects us to know everything about every slide and asks some hard questions on the tests. Be prepared to study the slides every night so you don't end up pulling an all-nighter before a test. Oh yeah, there are pop quizzes too!
Class is interesting, study the slides and your ok with a B. Very helpful and will listen if any problems.
He's a pretty weird guy, but predictable enough in taking his tests. His lectures drive me nuts though, b/c he randomly pauses in the middle of sentences, says the word "literally" allthetime. Last classw/in one hour he said it 7 times.
I enjoyed his class so much. He is willing to help the students and gives great feedback on papers. His tests are easy if you go to class. All the images can be over whelming but help students with their papers and short answers for texts.
The class is really interesting, he knows a lot about art. You get to learn obscure facts and recent speculations. However, the tests and quizzes are pretty tough. It's difficult to get and A, you really have to study a lot. I like ancient to medieval a lot better than ren-mod...you can tell he likes it better too because he gets really into it.
Although some of his mannerisms are annoying you can tell he is passionate about the subject. There are a few pop quizzes and alot of the lecture can be foundin the book. Tests are over his lecture and slides. STUDY THE SLIDES!!
One of the best instructors I have ever had. His course can be challenging but very informative.
Very animated but fun. Great teaching style. Follow the study guide he provides and PAY ATTENTION in class. He will count off on papers with incorrect grammar and syntax.
Pizer was a pretty good teacher, but the subject is hard if you dont go to class or study. Take notes, he emphasizes important artwork. Make notecards ahead of time- they raised my test grade 10+ points. The book is helpful if you need to reiterate information from your notes.
This class was my favorite I have ever taken. A lot of people found it VERY difficult, but I was so interested in everything he had to say that studying was very easy. He wants you to use note cards but extremely detailed notes worked well for me. He is a lovely teacher. Just make sure you can recognize periods/styles well.
Well structured course with alot of material but he wants you to do well and grades accordingly. Very nice man with a passion for the material. He has seen most of the places he teaches about and lends authenticity to the course. Highly recommend him over Housefield if you have the opportunity.
He is rude and a snob. I hate art history after taking his class. Probably the worst instrutor I've had.
I loved his class...I would go back to school just to take another one. He made the places and art come alive...as corny as that sounds!
I love this class. It challenging but not because he is unclear. He just expects his students to do the work. No free A's in this class. Oh...and he is a fox!
this guy has alot of Hangups! and is very obnoxious. the worst instructor ive had here.I hate art history now If you can take someone else, you should!
Take him!He makes the course extremely intersting. Does not read off notes but adds in interesting stories about history and art.Very cool guy, not a snob at all. Tests will be hard if you don't go to class. If you take good notes and make notecards for tests, you will get an A.
YOu really have to stay on top of your work daily and be ready to memorize over a thousand slides
Very knowledgeable.. Has visited many of the works he talks about and has great anecdotal stories, which keep it interesting. The class can be difficult because of the sheer # of images shown in class, but if you take good notes and make notecards, it's all good. Two tests and a paper. Attendance mandatory, but for good reason.
Pizer is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered.EXTREMELY clear and precise.Makes art history understandable and interesting even to those who hate art.His class is the only reason I got through Patrick the D-bag's intro to fine arts class.Awesome guy.Arrange your schedule to take anything you can from him.Lots of reading and memorization
He's amazing. You won't be upset by picking him for a teacher. I took Peeler before for this class and HATED it but Pizer make the class enjoyable. You won't be falling asleep during this class
This Class is HARD! Get ready you have to study way too much to get a good great. There is a ridiculous amount of information covered for one test and the reviews are far too general to really help. He's a very nice guy, the topic is interesting, but its HARD and he's a stickler. Never miss a test or pop quiz, or any day of class for that matter.
This professor is HARD! There is a ton of information covered in the tests, but he is very clear during his lectures which helps. All in all he makes what is IMO a very boring subject somewhat interesting. He's actually been to a lot of the places covered in the class and has some interesting stories. He's funny too which makes the class fun :]
I looked forward to his class each week. His lectures are interesting, and he tells a lot of good stories about the paintings and time periods that helps you remember information for the tests. Tests are easy, and as long as you showed up and took notes you are golden--he doesn't use that much, if any, from the txtbook. Take this proff!!!
One of the few classes I looked forward to. The prof. is very capable and has a witty sense of humor. Study for the test and you'll do fine!
Outstanding professor. He makes the material interesting and he is funny at times. Definitely take!
Great teacher! Really passionate about what he talks about. I think one time he actually teared up! Definately take his class if you have to.
at first i thought this class would be horrible, but it turned out to be interesting. Dont miss a ton of classes cause youll be screwed as most of the material on test comes from the lectures. As long as you go to class and take really good notes youll be ok. This class isnt so bad with this prof. definately Recommend!
Alan Pizer doesn't care if you fail. He doesn't care if you learn. As long as your cool with those two facts, take his class. Attendance is mandatory and he has TAs that don't assist teaching. They are his gestapo that search for cellphones, talkers, sleepers, etc. However, he is very knowledgeable and passionate about art. He just hates students.
Reads from his notes. Boring! Big attitude problem! RUDE!
Reading through these comments I get the impression Pizer or his assistants wrote a lot of them. Which is the problem with this person ..... there is only room for him and his ego. If you rub him the wrong way he viciously goes after students. Take the required ArtH classes that are taught by him someplace else. Just tranfer the clas
I had Pizer for both my Ancient to medieval ARTH and Intro to Fine Arts and he really know his stuff. I really enjoyed having him over my past ArtH teacher mainly because he really cares about that subject. People say he doesnt respect students?? Not true, I loved talking to him. Good Class, just know going into it that it's no walk in the park.
As a student that has only taken the intro and ancient to mid. from him, but has taken other ARTHS classes the only thing i have to say about pizer is...perfection. To all you hatas college is hard. you might have to do work
He was an excellent professor. I had no interest in art at all before this class. His passion for what he teaches not only caught my attention but I actually learned something and it stuck after the course. I still going going to museums now bc I understand whats going on in the art. Take his class! He will be excellent!
Pizer is my favorite Professor at Texas State. I loved going to his class. He's easy to listen to. Make note cards to study, not just because he makes a big deal out of it but because it works.
I loved this class! I missed the final my freshman year of college because I had two artHist classes and I got the dates mixed up... not a mistake you want to make. Pizer let me take the final and was so nice about my stupid mistake! I am now a Sr at TXST and his class is still the best experience I've had.
I actually really like going to this class. He's not the most entertaining proffesor but you NEED to pay attention or else you won't learn anything. Also, GO TO CLASS. He posts powerpoints online to use as flash cards but if you're not there for the lectures you will miss out. Tests are kinda hard, just study and you should do fine
His experience makes him very credible. The subject is boring even for art majors but his stories help you remember certain things. Tests are hard, don't wait until the last minute to start studying. He recommends using flash cards but I find using sticky notes to mark important things in the book, but that's just me.
Awesome teacher! Really interesting and his class is really enjoyable! His tests can be a little tricky, but if you pay attention in class(its hard not to) you'll get a good grade!
Educated & passionate, but disorganized. Always got into long debates with students over information, problems controlling the class. Added images the day of the tests, along with trick-worded questions. Very boring lectures that are hard to take notes over, almost never uses the book. Very unhelpful when asked for advice & extra credit. Would not recommend.
Finally a teacher that doesn't just recite the textbook!! Very knowledgeable in his field! Take notes, pay attention in class and use flashcards and you'll do great! He answers questions without getting irritated like some other prof. I wish he taught all my classes!!
He is the rock star of art history.
If you can take his class, DO IT! Hot.
Pay attention during lecture and you're guaranteed a pass. Actually make and use flashcards, and you're likely to make an A.
He has a TA that stares at you the whole time so you cannot do anything, test are really hard. His lectures were boring!!
I miss this class. One of the best professors i have ever had, what makes it even greater is he loves the subject so much and goes into great detail! Studying is a must though, flash cards help! Don't study the night before....too much information. He made me take huge interest in this subject!! :)
Dr. Pizer was not one of my favorites. His papers were very simple however his lectures were VERY hard to stay awake in. He is very monotoned and makes the class interesting the last part of it. I made it out with a C, however I did not apply myself as much as I could, because I couldn't get interested in the topics.
I took every class Pizer taught, and loved them all. He's definitely not a professor to take if you're looking for an easy A; but, if you put forth effort, you will gain so much in one short semester. Strongly recommend for those who truly love the history of Art.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!! He talks in depth about everything and answers everyones questions to the best of his ability. I HIGHLY recommend him, its not an easy A though, flash cards helped me a lot!
this class was very interesting but his tests were challangeing. He gave too much extra information about each work of art in lectures so it was hard to figure out what he acutally wanted you to remember.
He is a great teacher, he isn't kidding when he says use flashcards. I did and I got A's on 2 of the exams (and an 89 on the other). He is so interested in the subject, and ladies, he is a hottie. Take him if you're willing to put in effort.
Clearly knows what hes talking about..but his tests to me were really hard. He expects you to memorize A LOT of images and doesnt give any hints as t what which ones youll really need to know. He basically covers the book in class so you wont have to read.. make sure your in class cause the notes are hard to make up.
Professor Pizer was an interesting professor. He is very passionate with art history, but the only down side to him was that I was put to sleep every class period. Maybe its because my interest in art history is low but it was hard for me to stay awake. Other than that, Professor Pizer is a good professor to take for intro to fine arts.
Best Ancient Art history teacher I've had. Pizer also spent time in the middle east as an archeologist. Great teacher I learned a lot. You have to memorize pieces of art from textbooks for tests. I recommend his class ancient to reanissance art histoy.
I suggest only taking Pizer's class if you are actually interested in this subject. He gets EXTREMELY detailed in class discussions which make it very hard to know what's going to be important for the test. He says the book is required but I never used it and still made A's on his tests.
Such a good class. The tests are a little hard but if you read the book and take good notes during the class you'll be good. Rereading your book really helps because you've already gone through it all during class. Would recommend. He's also pretty funny. I didn't use flashcards but they would probably help.
Horrible. Probable most miserable class I've ever taken. Lectures were long and boring and a lot of test material was never covered in class. Didn't really stick to the syllabus and often got off topic. I do NOT recommend this class if you're just taking it to get your fine art credit out of the way.
Great professor, the tests are pretty hard so go to class everyday and TAKE NOTES, trust me, his lectures are more important than the book. Study. Study. Study. And you'll do fine
Pizer is wonderfully knowledgable in the subject of art history, any question you have will be answered thoroughly. He is very thorough in lectures and tests. While reading the textbook definitely helped, it comes down to attending lectures and paying attention. Sleeping may be tempting but Don't and you'll be more that fine.
Pizer's intellects in the subject makes him very passionate and intrigues us. Yet, his voice is monotone and he covers topics in great details, so it is a challenge to always follow. You can survive without the expensive textbook by researching extensively under each bullets in his study guide. Powerpoints are mostly visual - unhelpful. Takes Roll.
An absolute blast! He was animated and passionately knew the subject which allowed many students i spoke with to enjoy the class. His tests were from the textbook readings, historic pictures he elaborated about in class, and his lecture.
Pizer knows his stuff very well, and he has seen almost every piece he talks about. He is funny, and he makes the class interesting. Tests are easy if you study. I learned a lot, and I'm actually interested in Art History now. Wish there were more teachers like him.
He is so enthused with what he is teaching about, you actually enjoy and want to learn. Best class of the semester.
The class is extremely notes-intensive and he lectures very by-the-book. That being said, his lectures are always interesting and funny! I find myself looking forward to his class. You have to really know your stuff for the tests, but he tells you in advance what to study. Don't text or chat in his class. He gets really mad and it isn't pretty.
Doesn't get much better than this. You really develop an appreciation and respect for the arts through his eyes. Yeah, it's a tougher course. You have to know your stuff and study and take notes and be studious, but this isn't high school anymore. His lectures are unbelievably good, and his tests are multiple choice. Details matter. Great class.
I was just taking this class to get my fine art credit out of the way, but you have to put so much more into it. Attendance is mandatory, you really need to read and study for tests, also need to attend and write about 3 art events. Final is comprehensive. Great guy and knows what he is talking about. Answers any question you may have.
I enjoy art history but not his lectures. Yes, he does have a few interesting facts to throw into some of his lectures, but he is very monotone and tests upon tedious little facts that I find frustratingly unimportant. He has quizes as well that the majority seems to struggle with, given the reactions. There are people that love him but I don't.
Wasn't very interested in the material but it's required for my major; one of the tougher ARTH classes I've taken. Tests are pretty specific & lecture doesn't really make "the important stuff" too obvious; leads to lots of hours of studying. Pop quizzes ensure attendance & reading. Gotta work hard to do well in the class, but it's probably worth it
Honestly it's a pretty boring class. Attendance is mandatory and I do recommend going because his lectures are helpful. His review days and power points were helpful too. I will admit that this class made me work for my grades so if you're looking for an easy A this isn't the professor to take.
He's a good teacher, and you can tell he loves art. Attendance is taken by assigned seating chart, so get to class on time and you'll get the seat you want. Some students used the book all the time, I got through just fine with the lecture notes and slides he has on his page, just make sure you don't doze off and write most of what he has to say.
Probably the most interesting class I took. Had him for my intro to fine arts and was never bored. His lectures go over the book really in depth; I never opened the book and still got an A+. Always has a review day before the test. He is very passionate about what he teaches. Don't miss class! You will miss a lot of information.
He is very rude during lecture, some guy yawned and he stopped mid lecture and told him to control his yawn or get out. His tests are pretty hard, the only good thing Is that he grades the critical reviews really easy, I wouldn't take him
The actual course requires actually going to class and reading the book, but that's easy because his lectures are so awesome. He's been to most of the places around the world that he lectures on, which makes it easier to remember that info for the tests. No papers, some pop quizzes (w hints), and some tests (he outlines it the day before).
He's an amazing professor. If you miss the minimum amount of classes you should be fine burn wouldn't recommend it because he covers a lot. He does upload the power points on tracs so I guess if you miss the. I guess you're okay. The was one extra credit paper that was not due until the day of the final. Pl see know your id number and name.
I was not interested in Art History prior to this course, however Pizer makes the material very interesting. Do not text, attend class, make flashcards and you should do fine. If you miss class you will miss a lot of material not covered in the textbook. 4 Tests are multiple choice & part image based. 3 easy A critical reviews. I would recommend.
Pizer is a good teacher and he makes most lectures fun. But he covers way too many chapters to squeeze into a test, which makes it difficult to memorize. He doesn't necessarily cover all the material you need to know for the test... You need to read the book and memorize pictures and names of historic sites to a T in order to pass his tests.
Two absences allowed and after that points are deducted. He often has information wrong, but if you memorize what he teaches you'll be okay. He also kicked a student out for sneezing one time, so watch out when he's in a mood.
I really enjoyed his class. Some people would fall asleep but i found his lectures and personal stories interesting. He gives a review before the test and its very helpful.
I took Pizer about a year ago. He was very cool and knowledgeable. He loves art and has stories to tell about his personal experiences in the art world as it relates to the material we go over in class. He made time to really explain questions. ALOT of material though... excruciatingly boring lectures for me personally but not Alan's fault.
It is absurd how hard he made this class to be. You have to take notes, but be aware he gives so much information that the material he wants you to remember gets lost in the mess. His reviews are not helpful. I do not recommend him as a professor.
The students who complain about Dr. Pizer are pretty much the ones on their phones or dozing off in class. Out of all the professors I've had, Dr. Pizer is hands-down among my favorites. His lectures are informative and interesting and I have learned so much. The only catch - you ACTUALLY have pay attention, it's not some 'blow-off' class.
This class is definitely not an easy A if you're looking for one for your fine arts credit. If you miss more than three classes it will affect your grade, he's also very strict about cell phones and cheating. He definitely takes his job very seriously and demands respect. It was an interesting class, though and he's clearly very passionate!
Very passionate about what he teaches!! Made lectures interesting! DO NOT BE ON YOUR PHONE, he will call you out, awkward. Tests aren't bad if you take notes and pay attention. Gives detailed lectures so chug a coffee and be sure to write down what he says. CR's are easy A. Attendance is mandatory. Only used textbook for CR's. Definitely recommend!
One of the HARDEST classes I've had! He gives you an abundant amount of information that is sometimes not on the test. This is the only class I got a B+ and I had to continuously correct the him and the IA on my grades in TRACS. UNNECESSARY points were taken off in my critical review. Enjoyed the subject and his presence, but the grading is HARSH!
Tough class, but attend the lectures, take good notes, and make flash cards and you'll do just fine. Has "pop" quizzes, but he warns you a day before hand. He's actually been to most of the places he talks about in class so he has lots of interesting stories and funny anecdotes. I wouldn't dare take a different art history professor.
His Intro to Fine Arts class was very enjoyable. He is a good lecturer. He is not very clear on what he is testing on until the review class before the test.
Awesome professor. Lectures go by fast and are interesting. Definitely recommend taking if you need ancient to medieval art history
He doses off and gives so much more information than needed and we weren't sure what was going to be on the tests because his reviews were so extremely long and not clear. He would just tell you to "study everything", meaning all the contents of 5-more chapters for one test. Extremely unnecessary. He also seems to get mad very easily.
He's very passionate about Art History and is very anecdotal about all the pieces he's actually seen in person. Helps to remember specific pieces better, but boy you've got to study or you're going to sink fast. All the art starts to blend together. He covers so much so fast.
Very good professor. Has a great way of explaining the material. His PowerPoints are up on TRACS. Would highly suggest taking Prof. Pizer.
Does a great review before tests. Tests aren't too hard. Critical reviews have easy guidelines.
I truly like this professor but he does make you work for your grade. His lectures are incredibly interesting and are as much history based as art based. He uses a lot of his own life experiences to teach the material which is really intriguing. Although this class isn't easy I still would have taken it with him because he is so knowledgeable.
Clear/strict but fair expectations. Attendance mandatory. Tests are tough. If you go every class and take diligent/decent notes you'll get a B. Grade is mostly from 3 tests/cumulative final - have to study hard for them/visually recognize art and/or when in history it's from. Loves his subject, girls think hes hot. Ask about graverobbers story.
He made lectures interesting with personal experiences and fun background stories that made things easier to remember. He was clear about what he wanted us to know and did great reviews. Attendance is a big deal, brought my B to an A because I only missed one class! Great personality and fun to listen to.
Professor Pizer makes you earn every point in his class. His lectures are incredibly intriguing and are given as though he is your personal tour guide. He uses a lot of his own life experiences to convey the information. Although his classes are not easy as one would think they are definitely fun and interactive. I would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Pizer is very knowledgeable about his subject, and is able to present the course's material in a manner that feels premeditated, organized, and effective. He's friendly and approachable, challenges his students, and tells relevant stories based on his own fieldwork experience. I'm glad I was able to take a course with him before he leaves TXST!
