Awesome teacher who makes it fun to learn and easy to get excellent marks. I schedule my courses around HIS lab sections. Awesome guy. HIGHLY recommended!
Awesome teacher! I would recommend this teacher to anyone. I also scheduled my courses around his lab period. Awesome sense of humour
great great teacher, should take his class.
Alan is the best, for my first year of univeristy he really made it my favorite class. i now schedule all my courses around his lab sessions
i had him for the lecture part of bio 112. great teacher, very helpful and truly knows the material that he teaches. i highly recommend you try to get into his class, one of the best profs at this school.
Alan is literally the best prof ever. He will do anything to help his students out and really gets to know them too. I'm so sad I can't take any classes with him anymore! Alan, you're the best :)
I wish he taught every bio course!!!.. I scheduled second semester based on his labs!
TAKE HIM!
AWESOME PROF!
If you are willing to put effort into the class and use the teacher to your full advantage he is great!!
Best proff of my life. Hes hilarious, you will never fall asleep in his class. other proffs don't even compare.
be prepared not sleeping in his class. He is a very funny guy and keeps you interested in the lecture topic. he makes sure you understand in the labs and helps all the time. I recommend him, and i work around my schedule to get him.
Had his lab for 111, loved him! and was ecstatic when i saw he was lecturing for 112 (took his lab and lecture). AWESOME prof! super helpful, funny and has a kick ass new zealand accent. If there is one prof you should take for first year bio make sure it's Alan! Register early! his classes fill up fast!
Alan is the #1 biology prof. He wants you to get the general idea of things rather than memorizing straight facts. I got an A+ in the course and I learned plenty. Get his class/lab ASAP because it does fill up fast! Remember to read the textbook, engage your self in his lectures, and visit office hours. More energy -> stronger, faster, and cuter!
As everyone has pointed out, Alan is THE professor to take for biology! He makes the course interesting, all the time, and he makes sure that you understand everything! As long as you attend lectures, and do tutorials, and read the text once in awhile, Alan's class will be a breezee!! He'll make your university experience one that you will remember
Alan is awesome. I would definitely take him again for a course. He puts his notes online, so all you have to do is listen and enjoy his lecture. Be prepared to laugh.
I am NOT a science student, I had to take Bio 111 to fill some requirements. But Alan made the whole experience amazing. He simplifies, explains and has an incredible amount of patience with us, explaining it over and over to each of us until we got it. I almost wanted to take more Bio just to have Alan again! (And that's saying A LOT!)
Alan has renewed my interest in biology. He is a very good teacher, easy to approach and very knowledgable. I would recommend Alan as a teacher to anyone wanting to take bio 111 or 112 at UFV - He is by far the best bio teacher I have had in university so far!
I really liked Alan. He like to make sure his students aren't just memorizing but understand how concepts apply to life outside of the classroom. He's very helpful if you don't understand anything. He tells lots of jokes which are mostly hilarious, but I found that some were a bit prejudice. That aside, I loved him! Definitely recommend! :)
Alan is a great professor who really cares about how is students do. He gives quite a few quizzes in his Bio111 lab but if you study that days lab you will do fine. His tests are pretty difficult and his notes aren't the greatest either.
From the first moment I came into class I knew Alan would be a great prof. He's hilarious, smart and SO helpful! If I stayed after class and STILL didn't understand something he would practically draw my graphs for me and made sure I got it! Such an A+ guy! totally recommend him anytime.
Fantastic professor. I highly recommend taking his class. Very funny and knowledgeable. The class isnt hard, and he makes it fun. Try to get into his class!
Alan is the most helpful professor ever!!
Alan is awesome!! He knows his stuff and he's extremely helpful. Loved how he was able to incorporate his sense of humor without diverting too far from the material. Exceptional prof. Sometimes I found that not all of his notes corresponded with exams, but he's a very fair marker when it comes to the written section.
If you're taking Biology at UFV, make sure to get Alan as your professor! No one else comes close. Knowledgeable, friendly, and extremely funny, he's got it all. Allons-y!
Alan is great. He's really funny and nice. His class is super easy, if you don't know the answer he literally gives it to you but he makes you understand how to get it. He's so helpful. I totally recommend him for the lecture and the lab! Great guy.
Alan is one of the BEST teachers I have had in ANY class. He is willing to answer any question as many times as you need. Is very clear in what is expected of you. I would recommend him highly for any course he teaches.
Alan is nothing short of amazing. He is honestly the best prof I've ever had. He is so helpful and he really cares about his students. He wants you to succeed and he never gets frustrated no matter how many ways he has to explain something to you. He has interesting stories and is a really funny guy. One of the most genuine people I've ever met.
By far the best profs Ive ever had! he was very helpful in his office hours, and made sure you understood everything you had questions about! If you haven't taken a class with him, you really don't know what your missing out on!
Awesome prof so nice and helpful. He does is best to be clear and conscise, too bad more profs at ufv couldn't be like him.
Alan isn't very good at keeping you interested in the subject material. He drones on and on and his slides are confusing. If you manage to stay awake and ask lots of questions during his office hours, you'll get a good mark. Only tests are midterms and final exams, which are quite easy.
AMAZING!!!!!!!!! he will sit there and explain a concept until you are confident that you understand. Dedicated to his students! highly recommend his labs!
Alan was a great prof! I was in his class, and he is so funny! I found the midterms easy, he was liberal with the marks. He did have us write 4 papers, but I found he marked those quite fairly as well. Clearly knows what he is talking about, and enjoys his job. Excellent class.
Alan is my favourite teacher at UFV. I had him for 111 and 112. He really makes sure you understand the material if you go and ask him for help. He truly cares about his students and I can't wait to take more of his classes!
Fair tests and exams.
In the lectures he was not clear in what he wanted you to know. His slides had many pictures and a lot of useless stuff, which creates confusion. he likes to swear and make fun of the math and physics department. He is a funny guy, but when it comes down to preparing for the exams he is not helpful
He is so interesting and his lectures are great.
Took invertebrate anatomy with him. He's very knowledgeable in biology, and funny in class. His lectures are pretty entertaining , and he's a fair test giver and marker. Alan's a solid pick for the biology student who's ready to study his fair share to get a good grade.
Alan is a lovely person. His lectures are funny and he makes an effort to engage students with the material. Even in a first year biology course, he managed to weave in a lot of real world examples that I've been using and learning more about 3 years later. On top of which, I actually remembered what I learned in his class, more or less. Great guy.
Alan is amazingly funny and is great at keeping people's attention and making lectures (even almost hours ones) fun.
Great prof! Beware - if you have him for lab, the lab finals are very difficult. However, his criteria is very clear and he is a generous marker. I love his lectures; they're usually funny and well laid-out so it's easy to study. He's super easy to talk to if you need help and he will explain exactly what is expected for assignments.
Not helpful at all, teaches only a fraction of what he wants to test. wants every plant name and detailed historical story (yes, history in a SCIENCE class) memorized. Uploads as many assigned readings as he wants you to be tested on and is incredibly demeaning when you speak after class. Ridiculous expectations on exams. Avoid at all costs!!
Alan is a fantastic prof with an incredible amount of knowledge about plants and history and everything in between. His expectations are clear, and his marking is fair. Yeah, youll have to do extra textbook reading outside of class to do well, but thats why theres an assigned textbook for gosh sakes. 10/10 class.
Alan is a funny and knowledgeable professor, he is full of surprises. His lab exams are incredibly difficult and his written exams are only multiple choice and long answer. His long answer questions are huge and are always around 20 marks or more. Also he gives vague outlines for your work and then docks marks for missing things never mentioned.
One of the best Ecology professors out there. Took ecology with him and he was truly super helpful! Make sure to participate in class discussions and spend time going over plant names. There's even a cool field trip we went to! Great course, great prof.
Alan by far was my favorite prof, his lectures were hilarious and you actually enjoy being there. He is a caring prof and isn't out to get you on grades. For written exam questions, write EVERYTHING you know on the subject whether or not he asked for it (I received marks off for that). His notes aren't very good so definitely show up to class!
Take every class you can with Alan!! The BEST professor at UFV. He's so kind and caring and actually loves what he teaches. You leave class understanding everything. And he answers any question you could possibly have perfectly in both lab and lecture. 10/10 recommend. Thank you Alan!
Alan has got to be one of the greatest guys ever! His lectures are hilarious and he truly cares about his students, making sure they always understand the material. You do have to work in his class if you want a A... his mid term written questions are in depth 20 marks. All the stuff to earn full marks is provided in his powerpoints, recommened!!
Alans notes were pretty easy to follow but I found it hard to pay attention in class. Hes very caring and wants people to do well in his class so he gives out many hints for his tests, and his practice MC questions are very similar to those on his test. Note: do not buy the BIO 111/112 textbook, its not necessary.
Alan is a great prof. He is funny, kind, and is passionate about biology. He wants his students to succeed so he provides as much help as you need. I suggest going to his office hours and asking questions there because he gives a lot of detail. His midterms were easy but the exam was not what I expected and was difficult.
Alan was incredibly helpful and accessible by email or outside of class. He knows the material he is teaching, and works hard to ensure the success of all students. Quick email reply even over the holidays. Tough exam though, prepare for absolutely everything and don't be afraid to ask questions and DO research beyond what is said in lecture.
I had Alan for the lecture portion of BIO 111. He's very fun and knowledgeable. He provides lots extra help (self quizzes, graphic explanations) and is very supportive and willing to help in person if you're struggling. His sense of humor is a bit strange sometimes, but it makes class fun, especially for an 8 am lecture. Highly recommend!
Alan is Awesome! He makes his lectures as entertaining as possible and is an easy grader. Only homework given in his lectures are essays and he marks easy on those too! Midterms and Final are easy if you pay attention in class and take good notes. He explains the topics very well and with passion. Would definitely take his class again!
You need to go to his lectures to know what to study but cannot study from his lecture slides you will have to learn everything on your own he does dont make fair on test and exams and you have to write an essay as well which he does not make fair on either. People will have the same points mentioned in answers but will get very different marks!
You need to go to his lectures to know what to study but cannot study from his lecture slides you will have to learn everything on your own he does not mark fair on test and exams and you have to write an essay as well which he does not mark fair on either. Not a fair marker. Asks questions he never taught.
I have taken a few classes with Alan and he is by far my favorite prof. Very understanding and willing to help make online learning as stress free as possible. Lectures and expectations are well organized and as long as you take your own notes along with the power point and understand major concepts you will do fine!
Alan is a very funny and relatable individual. He is also caring and understanding of his students. This class, however, was a mess. His lectures are almost solely pictures and he will contradict what little he has written on his lectures. His projects will likely have vague instructions. Would not advise taking his class.
Professor Reid is incredibly kind and thoughtful. He genuinely cares for his students and their success and this shows through his instruction and interaction with his students. He is absolutely one of the kindest professors I have ever had. He is also passionate about what he teaches and is quite funny at times! I would definitely recommend him!
Alan is nice as a person and caring about his students. However midterms and exams are often vague asking simple questions that can sometimes be misleading and so that more marks can be docked off . Lectures are not very detailed but your answers are expected to be detailed and very specific.
Although his exams were fairly straightforward, his teaching style is very chaotic and disorganized. Alan gave lots of study material for exams, but the questions were mostly applied and not factual. Alan seems like a great guy, very caring, approachable, helpful, and funny, just not the best prof.
Alan is the professor that cares about the introductory students within his class. His support and acknowledgment of issues affecting students is admirable. However his sporadic instructional nature, lack of foresight in timing for material, and hidden requirements for an essay due at the end of the class leave much to be desired.
RUN!! Alan is so chaotic and goes off-topic too much. It is so hard to understand his lectures and slides. He does not do a good job explaining. I would never take him ever again because you'll be on your own.
Alan is a one of a kind prof. It truly showed in the way he engaged with our whole class or in his individual interactions. He will take the time to explain every theory, lesson, or lecture until a student fully understands. Super thankful for him and his teaching style.
extremely caring and funny. takes extensive time (if needed) to help explain material to students. Genuinely cares about his job and making students succeed. I would reccomend Dr Reid to anyone and suggest taking him if you can! One of my fav profs evr
Take a class with Alan if you are interested in the content or want to learn. If not, you may be frustrated by his somewhat (humourous) chaotic lectures and self-directed labs (direction is limited). Alan is excellent at answering questions and is highly knowledgeable on his subjects. His rubrics can sometimes be unclear- so better to ask him.
He became moody towards the end of the semester and it took him far too long to return our grades back. He didn't provide clear guidelines for any of his assignments and his grading rubric is outdated. It is impossible to get a perfect grade on anything in his classes because even if you follow the instructions that isn't good enough apparently.
His class was one of the worst that I have ever taken at my time at ufv. This professor has no answer key, and will give you the most random feedback depending on the student. His marking makes no sense and the grades were all over the place even if two students had close to the same work. Many failed his midterms. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
He has no basis to mark his midterms and essays and he has no answer keys that he goes over with the whole class and expects you to write what's in his mind. There are 4 essays to write where he expects you to write a 10 page paper in the midst of the midterms and lab portion of the course. Steer clear of this professor DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Expect to learn a lot but study even more. Take an Alan class if you are interested in the material. Expects you to be able to go into detail on small things learnt in class. Grading criteria is pretty unclear. A couple things I felt were graded unfairly and he was very accommodating about correcting the mark. Nice guy though. Get ready to study.
As an upper-level student: Alan is by far my favourite prof at UFV. I will say that his courses are project-heavy procrastinators beware! His tests are all written. In the lab you are expected to gather as much information as you can in 3hrs. He looks for an understanding so include examples in exams. Alan never shows judgment for questions so ASK!
Kind person, but a bad professor (IMO). Lectures are extremely unorganized and lacking of structure. Midterms had very random, seemingly pointless questions that didn't relate to preparation material. His high rating on RMP deceived me hugely, so be wary. The course was stressful, demotivating, and unhelpful. Look elsewhere. Hope this helps!
i was completely fooled by the rating, prepared through his lecture notes and fully reading the textbook chapters just to see that all my studying of important biology concepts were useless as his midterm questions were ridiculously random and completely unrelated to any important concepts that he should actually be testing you on
he's a really good professor and his lectures aren't too boring. study the material he provides for you before your midterm and you'll be more than fine. i found this class very similar to grade 12 bio (just a review of the concepts) so i didn't attend every lecture. i would definitely retake alan's class :)
He is a very caring and nice person, but his class was terrible for me. The slides shows are mostly pictures with no information so it's hard to study. The midterms have 7 questions so there's no room for error on them. He rambles too much and talks too fast to take clear notes in class so you have to teach yourself. Wouldn't take him ever again.
DONT RECOMMEND! Midterms are very random and marking isn't clear. There is also few questions on there which means you cant make mistakes. Slideshows don't explain much either.
Alan is a gentle prof and attempted to make the lectures and slides entertaining. The midterms and final exam was very difficult as there are not many questions to rely on and count for high marks. The class was difficult to follow at times and required an unholy amount of memorization and detailed understanding. Liked the professor, not the class.
Just finished Bio 111 with an A in Alan's class. He is very good at lecturing although the course material is heavy and does require review over the lecture slides (that are accessible).
super chill, and very kind and caring to all his students.
Alan is a unique professor, he wants students to understand the "WHY' behind concepts. I struggled with this at first but you really have to show up during office hours to do well. His door is always open. Those discussions and asking questions is what will get you ahead towards that A In his class.
Great prof! Kinda concerning at first, but once you get used to him he is great. Lectures were entertaining and informative. Likes to throw in some weird facts here and there which makes the class more entertaining. Gave a choice of long answer questions on tests which I appreciated. Always available if you have questions. I highly recommend him!
One of my favourite profs, his lectures were easy to follow and he made the class entertaining. His tests were hard, but you would be good if you studied all his lectures and notes. He was super nice and caring and wanted you to do good and succeed in his class. Would definitely take him again if I can:)
My biggest issue was his exams. Few questions worth many marks, often questions about tiny details and not about big topics that were covered. One question can be the difference between multiple letter grades on a midterm. Does offer choice of long answer questions which is nice. Not an unmanageable professor but I wouldn't take him again.
Alan is a very knowledgeable prof so make sure to ask lots of questions and you will learn a lot from his class. Not a huge fan of his tests because a lot of the questions are from specific examples in class. The trick to his tests is to just info dump. Don't try to be efficient; just fill the page. Overall, he's very knowledgeable and funny.
Alan has a wealth of knowledge in biology and botany. He makes subjects interesting and he will show you what is important during class. Bring your A-game for note taking. Keep notes on what the photos in the slides are showing! These will come back in midterms and exams. Labs are chaos. Use every opportunity to ask him about the task at hand.
He's a good person, but bad lecturer. His slides contain little useful information, so you're in a bad spot if you miss anything he says, since the lecture notes he posts don't always describe what he says in class.
Eh, kinda difficult and makes it very over the top, but good nonetheless.
He is great and really funny. However, you should take good notes and attend class. Also do not leave last things last minute as bio 112 is all brand new material. Very hard to cram.
Alan is the GOAT. Easily one of the all around most intelligent professors at UFV, if you have a question - he has an answer. Actively encourages learning over simply receiving the grade.
Really good prof in terms of wealth in subject, so take his class if you actually want to learn information and understand processes. He is very easily accessible outside of class and I would defiantly going to see him a few times throughout semester. The only issue is that his lecture slides have no notes so bring you A game for notes. Good luck!
Alan is very enthusiastic about teaching biology but goes on long tangents during lectures. His exams are pretty straight forward and fair aside from his grading criteria for the written questions being unclear. PowerPoints don't have a lot of info so take good notes during lectures and you'll be fine.
Alan's lectures aren't just a ton of facts to memorize. He often goes on tangents (sometimes straying from the lecture topic), but his stories make it so much more interesting and engaging. However, this does make it difficult to predict what will be on the exams.
Awesome prof. very caring professor. lectures can be a bit boring as its all powerpoint. would take again for sure!
Alan is such a great professor and an awesome person. He has a great energy and passion for botany. His lecture slides could use some work, but attend class and write down what he says and it'll be okay. He is genuinely such a kind person and super funny.
Alan is an overall good Bio prof, he didn't give any homework. The exam questions have pretty easy multiple choice but the long answers are worth a lot of marks and you have to go into a lot of detail. His lectures are interesting and he will answer your questions in a helpful way.
