He made the class interesting. The worst part of the class was the other students. We discussed interesting topics which made the papers painless to write. He was very nice and really help me with my writing.
Would not recommend
This distance learning class is so-so. The readings aren't that exciting and you have to post to the forum twice a week, which can be hard if you're not interested in the readings! The papers to write weren't too difficult or demanding though.
Professor Rubin is a very fair person. He give extremely helpful feedback on returned work. He is also very down-to-earth.
Readings were mostly boring to read. But overall, its an easy class. Graded hard at first, but towards the end I was getting A's. The final paper is 10 pages long, which sucks, but if you do it on something you like, you'll find no trouble at all doing well. And that grade will help pull up the overall score. He also helps you w/ feedback. Easy A!
great class!
not good. nice guy but tells you upfront he is gonna make it hard. first day of class there were 22 people, now there are 15...what does that tell you. take someone else
he's a little rude, honestly...i took his class online so there was no face to face so maybe i took his e-mails too critically, but he was a little mean if you ask me
Great teacher. Easy to understand and reasonable expectations - fair. I took this class online and felt that although the interaction was limited to online postings, there was no problem understanding the text or assignments
I took COMP 111 over the summer on the internet and although interaction was limited, Rubin's directions were very clear. He was very helpful and the class was an easy A. He sets up the semester for success because he is organized and tells you what you need to know up front. I highly recommend anyone taking COMP 111 over the internet.
I enjoyed his class immensely. Professor Rubin is extremely helpful. I would recommend his class to everyone. Great guy!
HORRIBLE teacher. don't take him if you want to get a bad grade. extremely critical, and his feedback is misguided. take another teacher
Hes nice, but the class wasnt very interesting. its very layed back, and you only have a few big esays.
The class was boring
this class is easy, you get readings and 5 pop quizes..very critical about the essays..hard to get above a c! wouldnt take him again.
Professor Rubin has a very laid back and fun style of teaching. He is easy to get along with and still tells you where you need to improve.
I'v never been so turned on...I'm talking about the essays.
Class was boring when i had him. A lot of reading and only a few essays. wasnt very interesting or helpful.
Funny teacher if you're paying attention. He's intelligent and doesn't stress over stupid little things - real laid back and chill guy. He's aware that what he is teaching is boring. Very helpful if you ask him, but he won't hold your hand. Taking him again, def!
Rubin is a great instructor. He is an intelligent guy and has a funny personality. If you want to learn how to write more effectively, then take his course. It requires some effort, but it is worth it.
I took Comp 110 and Comp 111 with Alan. He is awesome! He is a critical grader but I think that is fair for a class that is trying to improve your writing skills. He is very witty. He can challenge the bright students and engage the uninterested students at the same time. I highly recommend him.
I took the ER6 COMP111 course. There was a lot of reading, but it's actually nice to learn how to read and write better! Professor Rubin helps you become a better thinking and writer. He teaches you how to engage with the mind of the writer by analyzing each word. If you take this course, it will change your life! 4 essays + 2 board posts per week
I took him for 110 and 111. At times, I wasn't sure what he wanted, but he has made me a better writer and I now have better critical thinking skills. You can tell he loves what he is teaching, regardless of his sarcasm (he's very funny though). Hard grader, but very fair
Alan is a great guy! He is helpful and grades your papers fairly. If you show up and do what he asks and participate, you should get a decent grade. His classes are not boring. He is sarcastic and very funny.
Omg this was the worst class of my life...worst teacher.I wouldn't recommended at all. I fail class, I was there every single work and did everythig. He grades really hard. Not a fair teacher, very critical. Classes are super boring. Ive never faied a class, but with him I did.
Alan is the best! He is very interesting and intelligent person with the sharp sense of humor. After I took COMP110 with him, I was sure I want to take him for my COPM111 (online). 6 weeks online class was even more interesting and relaxing. Easy A in both classes! BTW, English is my second language... Highly recommend!!!
The best teacher! English is my second language and it still was an easy class!
Great teacher. Texts reading and discussions help to write a good essay. Highly recommend!!!
I enjoyed this class, but I would have enjoyed a little more of a challenge. Overall there were four essays and a ten-page research paper (topic of your choosing). Prof. Rubin was very fair, and the structure of the online course was easy to understand. I would recommend Prof. Rubin to those looking to take Eng. Comp. II online.
great teacher - worth taking for 110 and 111
Alan is probably the greatest teacher I've ever had. He made me read and re-read materials until I had an much stronger understanding of the story at hand. Before him, I would only read a story once, but never 3 or 4 times...never realizing that there was more to the story than just a quick run-thru.
It is more like a sociology than a writing course. He does not teach how to write. He is a critical grader and marks that everything is unclear/vague when his teaching is unclear and vague. He doesn't help you improve. Would not recommend.
I liked him. He has a funny, dry sense of humor. He made the material as interesting as possible. The papers were easy. I got a B.
I read the comments on here prior to taking his class and I was very nervous. But, he actually was not too bad. He is nice but has weird jokes. He explains the content well. He can be a little tough on grading but if you show up and do the work you'll get a good grade in the end.
This class started out very easy so I got used to not having to do much and then he started handing out pop quizzes and enjoyed watching us fail them. He's also a strict grader and is not really willing to help you. Very sarcastic and kind of rude. Would not take him again.
He is tough on your papers!! He picks out almost everything wrong with your paper. It hard to accept his criticism but it really helps in the long run. He is very sarcastic but that's a good thing, especially for a 9:30 class! Overall he is a good professor but just make sure you are good at writing, if you are not find a different professor!
One of the best teacher I've had. Very funny and makes the subject matter enjoyable. Great teacher.
Rubin was a great teacher for comp! We read what was assigned and then had class discussions about the deeper meanings of the text. Sharpened my writing skills. He's a laid back teacher and doesn't make class boring, awesome choice for comp
Rubin isn't the best teacher but he certainly isn't as bad as some I've heard about. He has a weird sense of humor and his class is pretty boring but he's really not that bad, especially if you're like me and hate writing.
Great class! Funny, outgoing personality from a knowledgeable teacher. However, he does grade strictly, so make sure you proofread your work.
Rubin was the best. Enjoyed every class, and it was as easy as listening to the guy talk. He was funny, fair, really knowledgeable about the course and he didn't overload the class with assignments.
Alan's class about critical thinking and writing. He looks at underlying meanings of the text to provoke class discussion. I had watched fight club before but watching it in his class game a totally new perspective of the movie. It was a fun interactive class. Just read the material and give the essays a solid effort. Definitely recommended!

I hated the heavy reading but enjoyed class discussion on history, literature and social issues. The class can sometimes be a little dull. He quizzes a lot so better do all your readings. Alan is a laid back teacher with a sarcastic sense of humor. Read and participate in class and you'll be fine. He lets students use the text during exams.
Very nice guy. He does a decent job trying to get the class involved. He is always willing to help if needed. He is not strict with deadlines and tardiness. Overall he is a very cool professor.
I took this class during the summer session. The class ended early, and though the lectures were boring at times, he was an easy grader. All you have to do is actually write the papers, and you will pass.
Professor Rubin is a knowledgeable professor with a sarcastic sense of humor. I took him for LIT231, this class required A LOT of historical reading, which involved some confusing excerpts from a hefty 2 part anthology. It was more a history class, than a literature class. He gave pop quizzes and attendance in mandatory. Kinda boring class overall
If he likes you then you are fine to pass. Join in the discussions in class!
Read literature, then discuss in class (and quizzes). Rubin is knowledgeable, and will help you look at perspectives and history you may not have considered. You will use this introspect to write a more thorough research paper (the final). He's genuinely funny, which makes class enjoyable. Learned a lot. Would take again.
Cool guy, very laid back and chill. He does try to get the class involved when he lectures. I have had him for two courses and he does make you write essays but is very cool when it comes to grade. Overall cool guy.
Quizzes? Fear not! He only poses 4 or 5 very simpe questions to make sure you committed to the readings. As for his personality, he's one of the wittiest, most diliberate people you'll ever meet... and he knows it! He's not overly cocky though. Most admirable quality: Though observably tempered, he cannot hide his inner nerd (i.e. love of lit.)
He is a very tough grader but it makes you want to write a better paper so you don't have to see bad comments. You'll need the text book because he quizzes randomly. Class discussions are always very interesting and he is very funny guy,
I only took this class because I needed to for my major, and the material isn't really my thing. But the professor made it more than bearable, and his sense of humor is the same as mine, which not a lot of people were super responsive to, but I loved it. I sort of had a low-key crush on him, oops. Anyway, no tests and easy as long as you read!
Very amazing teacher expect to work but also expect to have fun. Very funny and good teacher. Never leaves a student in the dark. Hes always there if you need help. By far the best english teacher I had.
Professor Rubin has a hilarious dry sense of humor! I He asks you to read and will give random quizes. you get 10pts for putting your name on the paper, seriously not hard! He likes his students to respond when he asks questions or for opinions. The deer and headlights is just annoying in class so speak up! Easy Grader!Would love to take him again!
Rubin has a sense of dry humor, thinks he is funny. expect pop quizzes for reading assignments. If you talk during class he is more generous when grading assignments. it is possible to get an A but have to do the work and participate in class. Challenge his view points effectively and he will respect you.
You learn SO much about history and life. There's A LOT of reading and it can be really dense. So in general the reading takes a lot of time. Also you have to do it because he gives pop quizzes on it. However, he's an easy grader as long as your read the material. Also he likes when you participate. He's really funny and sarcastic. Loved him!
Funny guy. He is a decent grader but can be tough in my opinion because i feel that i wrote some decent papers that weren't graded as high as i expected. I would really say that this is because he is an English teacher and everything can be critiqued in writing! Other wise, i very much enjoyed this class and would take him again.
If you are ready to work and take this course seriously, you'll be fine. Alan makes the class interesting. There are pop quizzes, but as long as you read what is assigned you'll be fine.
definitely a good professor as long as you're willing to put in the effort! Read and attend class and youll be fine. He has a really sarcastic sense of humor and makes it interesting,
Best part of my day. Dry humor, if you're involved in the class then it will be fun.
He's An Amazing Professor
Remember how in elementary school you would visit your old teachers from previous years? It's pretty much what I'm going to do since I don't have him anymore. He's great
Alan engages even the most apathetic of students. He's funny, and everyone learned about our world from a more critical perspective. If you read, even a little, you will understand the material. He likes papers that take chances, so don't play your essays or thesis too safe. The risk takers on papers and in discussion, get the A's.
Really funny dry humor, gives u a schedule on the first day so u know when all the readings & essays are due, & u don't have to write more than about 3-5 pages on any of the essays. Very lecture heavy, but there's usually discussion, so it's no BD! Homework is the readings, and none were very long. I enjoyed the class but found the topics boring .
Uses the textbook. For every rough draft he tells you what you did wrong so you can fix for final draft. Start 10 page essay in the beginning of the semester or you'll regret it. Really tough all essays tho, and not entirely sure why you get the grade you did sometimes. Lectures are basically him reading the book the whole class, quite tedious.
He is really funny and easy going.
"And at the end of the rainbow is where the jews keep their gold" - Professor Ruben. He's fine with going off on every which tangent the class might come across and is always good about taking even the wildest ones (such as from the conversation above) back to the point. I had a great time.
Rubin started off the semester good but as the semester went along, he became super strict with grading and apparently "citing sources is plagiarism." He threatened my entire class that he was going to report us to the dean because we all plagiarize even though my papers are A worthy in all my other classes and never had a problem. I got a C
Rubin's class was always interesting to get through. If you enjoy light humor and lectures, he's your guy. Didn't enjoy the random quizzes and vague criteria. But did enjoy the few papers we had to write.
Prof. Rubin is one of the funniest and best professors I've had at Bucks. Sadly, I don't belive I can take him again. If you have the oppertunity I certainly would take his class.
Professor Rubin is a very tough grader. Your grade is dependent on how well you can write the few papers that are given. Hes really honest, credible and consistent except for the pop quizzes on the reading material. Hes funny too! If participation and hard work is shown he is more flexible. Overall a good teacher, I learned a lot from him.
Rubin was a great professor and I wish I was taking him again. We had 4 essays which started with an in-class rough draft, then a take home outline and then our final draft. His grading was clear and he offered lots of constructive criticism too. Definitely need the book. He's also hilarious so class was never boring. 10/10 would recommend!
Really funny guy and pretty laid back. The class was really hard though.
Rubin is hilarious and a great professor. In his American Literature class he generally just goes over the readings, explaining them very well and is open to discussion. Pop quizzes are pretty easy as long as you do the readings. Allows notes and textbooks during midterm and final. Very laid back but you do need to pay attention and do the readings
Professor Rubin was one of my favorite professors that I ever had. not only did I take english comp 3 times (my 3rd time with him) and hated COMP 110 but he made it 100% better. not only his the content he teaches is educational and intresting but he is also funny. You grade is based on how hard you work for it. He is also great in COMP 111.
Alan was the highlight of my day. He doesn't use canvas, which was frustrating, but I throughly enjoyed his class. He's hilarious and is at that point in his career where he just doesnt care anymore, but in a good way.
Great
Professor Rubin made my first year at college more enjoyable than I expected. During each class, my friend and I would sit in the front row and laugh at his jokes during the lectures. As far as homework, it was always reasonable; he never gave us extra work, which is something I appreciated as a busy music major. Good feedback and kind professor.
I do not understand why this professor has such a high rating. Taking one of his most recent zoom/canvas English classes has been a huge mistake. Even though his work load is alright, his grading techniques do not make up for it. He is never specific with the assignments and does not provide rubrics, but he is quick to take off points.
Great teacher, he keeps class fun by spicing it up with his usual sarcasm. He writes examples and pictures on the board to help visualize his thoughts instead of just a rambling lecture. Beware: he is definitely a strict grader you must proofread and ALWAYS make sure you always read the text book every week he gives pop quizs all the time.
do not recommend Alan Rubin at all, he puts probably like 5 writing assignments and grades based off that, he also does not grade quickly enough, and if you miss a few classes, he fails you which is just horrible even if you explain a situation that occurred, he could accommodate...but this prof does not care about students succeeding unfortunately
Has VERY few assignments, but pop quizzes and assignments are easy if you just dedicate an hour to a summary note. The first teacher I fell asleep to in class... twice... he rambles on a lot but is funny and it's nice to have a relaxing atmosphere. Make sure to always proofread.
Alan is a brilliant professor to have for any kind of COMP class. He's very laid back and the lectures aren't boring at all. His workload is light but make sure you read, not a nitpicky professor, and he's a fair grader. One of the best professors I've encountered, especially because he's sarcastic and funny and cares about students
Little work besides essay work. He was truly sarcastic and hilarious. Gave great feedback and is very honest. Always fun in his class. A lot of open discussion instead of lecture.
Alan's class was my "easy class". We wrote three take-home essays, two in-class essays, and there are two pop quizzes on the reading. Reading is highly encouraged because 95% of the classes are open discussions on the reading. Overall a very chill class!
Rubin was okay as a professor. It felt like you had to already know how to write an essay in order to pass. Very hard grader. Take your outlines seriously. Don't buy the book use the free pdf online just make sure to read it before class. Don't take it unless you know how to already write an essay and you are going to 100% show up to class.
Don't buy the textbook. There is like 3 pop quizzes on the book and I bought it, never read the book and still passed every quiz. Fair grader and gives opportunities to succeed. He likes you better if you show up to class.
Very chill and funny guy. His section of COMP111 focuses more on literature than the material learned in COMP110. His grading criteria is clear for his essays and he is very very helpful. Straightforward guy and will always give you advice or help on your essays. Take him if you like a laid back class and want to learn more about literature.
You don't need the textbook, just look up pdfs online. There were 2 reading pop quizzes but I passed without reading anything from the book. He talks about his personal life a lot which made the class more enjoyable and relatable. He annotates essays extensively so you know exactly where you made mistakes and is generous with late work.
So boring, all he does is talk, didn't learn anything from him. wouldn't recommend taking him, he will just make you want to fall asleep.
You just need to show up and do the work. Most of the class is a discussion on tertiary topics, but if you just show up, and do the work, it's easy. This is a secondary class, so you're expected to know the basics of essay writing, but that's about it.
Genuinely the best professor I ever had. Just be open and honest with him.
Easygoing, funny professor. Very generous grader, but not much effort is needed to get a good grade in his class
He has to be the worst professor at Bucks. He is the toughest grader I've ever had and his comments on my essays were not appropriate at all; he was making fun of my essay. All he ever talks about is his mid life crisis and I have not learned anything from his class. Do NOT take him for any class. He is really strange too.
3 essays and 2 in class essays (which are required by the school). English is my worst subject but I still got an A somehow. As long as you spend a decent amount of time on the essays youll do great. Also had 2 pop quizzes but they only stand for maybe 2% of your grade and I got 100% on both despite not reading the book.
I took this professor for COMP107,110,111 and never had a problem with him. Averaged a grade of A's and high B's. very easy going, with minimal essays. 2-4 pop quizzes with five basic questions that barely make a dent in your grade. very good professor and is easy going. just be honest and don't cheat. wish i could write more!
Textbooks can be found online for free if you know where to look. This class was a positive experience overall. Mr. Rubin's teaching style incorporated humor, making the classes engaging and easy to follow. His approachability and kindness fostered a comfortable learning environment. Additionally, the minimal homework load made the class manageable
By far one of my favorite professors. He was sarcastically hilarious, and was very relatable and open with the students. Socially, he is a little awkward but he was still very easy to talk to. I very much enjoyed my conversations with him after class. Great professor overall. Take his class unless you can't handle sarcastic/rude humor.
I absolutely LOVED professor rubin... probably one of the most laid back professors I've had at bucks. Super funny and approachable. He gives you short reading assignments each week and sometimes there's a pop quiz but they're so easy! Other than that you just have to write a few papers but don't worry, he is easy on grading. PLEASE TAKE HIS CLASS
Rubin is the best. He is really funny and is just a great professor. He does require the textbook and gives pop quizzes on the reading so make sure you read. He makes sure you do well. He gives good feedback. He is also very understanding on anxiety. One of my favorite professors.
Alan is really chill, sarcastic, and hilarious. The work is not that bad except the research paper, but the paper is mandatory for every comp111 course, so it doesn't count against him. He gives very few essays throughout the semester. Just read what he wants you to read and you'll be good for the semester.
I took this professor two semesters in a row and I wouldn't have wanted to take my comp classes with anybody else. Rubin is a respectable guy who gives great feedback and has really valuable/funny conversations with the class during his lectures. He does have pop quizzes but as long as you do the readings beforehand, they're pretty easy.
I enjoyed my class with Rubin very much. The material itself is boring, but the readings, essays, and quizzes are all very easy and relevant. Rubin has a dry sense of humor but keeps you engaged.
Greatest teacher ever.
I LOVED Alan Rubin! Alan provides dry humor to keep the class entertain and engaged. I even went and took his class my following semester! The workload is light but if he's telling you to read... read. He does throw in some pop quizzes. Make sure you participate in class (he will notice and it will help you out). IF YOU CAN TAKE HIM, DO SO!
Terrible teacher
Alan Rubin is the best professor anyone could ask for. Justice for my boy. He's the s***.
He has a very dry sense of humor so if that's not your thing then don't take him. I personally think that he was pretty tough with grading but it's because he genuinely wants to see you improve in writing. He gives basically no work, just always be sure to read when he tells you to because he does do some pop quizzes. One of my favorite professors.
Rubin is the goat he gives you feedback and you learn what you pay for. RUBIN IS THE GOAT I HAVE TO PIT EMPHASIS. If you fail his class it's on you simple
Alan Rubin is an amazing professor! The dude is super funny. The class is mainly reading and discussions. Theres also a quiz here and there.
very mid!!
10/10 I do recommend
Rubin is a hilarious prof who keeps the class engaging. The readings and assignments are manageable, and he's understanding about student anxiety. unstuck AI was a great study aid alongside the textbook.
The classes were dull and difficult to pay attention to, and he would fill time by ranting about unrelated, boring topics. Did not receive much feedback until finals week, when I received an unprofessional and unprovoked email criticizing my writing. Got high A's on every paper, grade suffered from pop quizzes. I absolutely don't recommend Rubin.
He is a great teacher. So far I am only 2 weeks in but he is so funny
Loved taking Professor Rubin's class! The homework is minimal, aside from some readings, and the lectures are discussion-based. He is a lenient but fair grader and your effort can go a long way.
I thought I was going to fall asleep during every class. I loved reading literature before this class, but he changed my mind. It was painfully boring and he was a harsh grader. Do not take.
rubin is the best if you fail any of his classes its you. He expects a lot but doesn't overwork you and is very attractive with his feedback, also chooses engaging topics
Rubin was a great professor. I took him for COMP110 and knew pretty early on that I'd want to take him again, so I did for COMP111. He's absolutely hilarious and his classes were always fun. Don't take him if you plan on skipping class or not paying attention. I thought he was a very fair grader for papers, but he does do 2 or 3 pop quizzes.
Alan Rubin is the best professor one can have. If I could have him for every subject, I genuinely would. His lectures are hilarious, and he genuinely cares about his students. His humor is dry and very sarcastic but in the funniest way possible. He doesn't give much homework besides pop quizzes to ensure his students are reading. Papers are easy.
Professor Rubin clearly cares about what he's teaching. The assignments weren't too hard or too easy, they were given at a very reasonable pace. Always very easy to get in contact with, and willing to help. He's a bit of a stickler about his readings. Lectures were dry but no-one is perfect.
Alan Rubin was a very good Proffesor! He is very funny, sarcastic facetious and even hilarious to start off the class! I enjoyed his lectures when we are discussing the material for each class! The pop quizzes were difficult. The essays weren't too bad. I love his humor every time when he comes in! I love that he slams the materials in a silly way!
rubin's lectures were super boring and i almost fell asleep every class. he does give really good feedback on papers and the demand for the papers isn't crazy only 2-3 pages not including works cited page. i had a pretty good grade but it suffered bc of pop quizzes. i personally wouldn't take his class again
Good sense of humor and realistic. Total of 4 in-class essays, 3 take-home essays, and about 2 pop quizzes based on readings (that were done in class). No textbook purchase was necessary. He's very big on in class discussion, but you also don't have to talk if not comfortable. Attendance wise, he allowed us 3 classes to miss without any penalty.
