He's a nice guy and he's really funny. For the most part, he's easy to listen to and you can learn a lot from him, but be careful--his tests can be murder. Even if you think it's pointless, do the reading. You won't regret it.
SOO hard to understand. I had to spend an hour reading over my notes after class trying to understand what I wrote. He talks fast and in a way that only he can understand using words that the average person would need a dictionary to understand. His tests are brutal. He's a nice guy and hes funny and means well.. but it's hard to get an A.
it's not that he's a bad teacher, he just doesn't teach what you're going to be tested on. he teaches you his opinions about all the topics, instead of the things in the book, which ultimately make it onto the test. so if you go by what he says in class, you won't really do well on the tests, the essays, and probably the in-class discussions.
Awesome guy. His lectures are always entertaining and he really gets you to think about what you are learning about in a more personal context. His tests really are not that hard, the key is to go over his power-points which he always posts online and do the reading as much as possible.
He is a great Professor. He keeps class interesting with the issues, and how we address them. The key to doing well is to read the material BEFORE CLASS. If you do that, his discussion makes alot of sense. His teaching style made the semester of Sociology much better than i expected.
Extremely fun to listen to. Uses his vast experiences and knowledge to help with uninteresting/confusing topics to help us understand them. Exams were "take home" papers and pretty easy as long as you did the reading. I will take any classes that he teaches.
Fun to listen to. Lots of experience and knowledge on the topics we cover. Exams were "take home" papers and pretty easy as long as you did the reading. I will take any classes that he teaches. Note: DO ALL READING BEFORE CLASS
I absolutely hated this class. Rudy had a lot of interesting things to bring about during class, but I felt that he wasn't very organized. I most likely would not take him again.
Alan knows a lot about SOC, finally a prof who loves his subject! He was unclear at times but if you do the reading and participate in class, you're golden. Swears a lot too. But overall a great prof. TAKE HIM!!
I thought that he was really good. he used a lot of big words , but he was really funny. and he swore a lot, which was great. even if you don't get the best grade in his class, you'll still learn a lot- he raises a lot of good questions that we should ask ourselves.
Passionate and entertaining. Confusing at times, but will help you if you let him. Do your work and you'll be rewarded. He's still a student at heart, so don't let his seemingly huge ego get in the way of the you allowing him to be a helpful and fun prof!
ALAN RUDY IS PRETTY MUCH THE MAN!!! ALTHOUGH HE RAMBLES && TALKS FAST HE'S REALLY ENTERTAINING && MAKES YOU WANNA LISTEN!! YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE TO GO TO CLASS ALL THE TIME TO GET GREAT GRADES!! HIS TESTS ARE PRETTY HARD..BUT IF YOU STUDY YOU SHOULD BE GREAT!! I WOULD DEFINENTLY TAKE HIS CLASS AGAIN!!
Be prepared to know what you are doing. He doesnt care much on what his students are learning, but cares about what he listened to in the car ride to class.
Prof Rudy is very intelligent. If you want to learn something take this class, if you want to get a good grade DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The tests are relatively easy, but he(or his TA/GA) grade extremely harsh on the papers and short writings. Hitting all the points he wants you to understand through the writing doesn't mater, The grading is random
He really isn't that good of a professor. You'd think the class would be about pop culture..but it's all about grunge bands and what he thinks about things. Relatively easy...but boring and lacks any real challenge.
I loved Rudy! He is extremely intelligent and interesting. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Likes being the smartest person in the room. Thinks Generation X was awesome. Thinks his crappy bands that he followed when he was younger are the greatest bands ever. He never reads the textbooks but expects you to. Then when the textbook ends up terrible he complains about it but still expects you to use it. Acts like hes too big for Michigan.
I hate this man. Hes a liberal elitist that makes the rest of us liberals look bad.
Rudy is great...take him if u can!! BEST PROF IVE EVER HAD!! Keeps the boring things intresting..CURVES which helps out the students who are poor test takers!
Fun prof. to listen too, however, going to class is relatively pointless. I would go to class to listen to his rants, but you never actually get tested on the lectures. Study the terms in the book and know alot of basic definitions and you can do well. Good professor to use a U.P. on. I'd recommend if you're looking for someone that's pretty easy.
Very cool professor. Not necessarily easy, but certainly passable. Cool lectures, interesting outlook, fun to listen to.
If you want to actually learn something besides the current state of the economy or the election, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Going to class is pointless, he doesn't discuss anything relative to the class, just rants about how everything sucks while not offering a solution for anything. Very frustrating to listen to.
If you don't mind talking about current politics, economy or random stuff for half the class before MAYBE getting to a powerpoint slide which then not used because he just keeps ranting about random stuff. take this class. personally, i find it pointless and i've learned nothing. absolutely nothing.
He posts all power points online, so when you get to class, he actually talks about things people want to know about rather then spending the entire time talking about what you have already read. And actually, if you read before class, his rants make more sense. The thing I liked the best was that he talks to like an actual person. Sweet professor.
Alan Rudy is an engaging professor who will divulge into current events as well as clearly explain popular elements of sociology. Attendance is not mandatory, but if one wishes to gain something more out of the course, it can be a neat experience to show up. Course readings can be challenging, however, exams and homework are straightforward. Easy.
I greatly enjoy having him as a teacher. I could sit in and listen to his classes all day. He poses questions that make me think and learn. He also relates his teachings to the real world and current events. I would suggest him anyone.
Every story has two sides, and this professor gives both. I really enjoy going to this class because I know I won't be drilled with a bunch of useless knowledge. I learn something new every time I'm in his class. He's also not afraid to tell us about his life, which I think is really cool. He's very laid back and understanding.
good teacher.. definatly come prepared and you will understand more... i like that he relates everything we learn about to something that actually happens in life... exams are tricky but what exams arent!
Really interesting class and his lectures keep you awake. He talks about things going on in current events and ties them into the lessons/chapters we are learning. He definitely doesn't leave you thinking "i am learning this because...?" Everything makes sense in the end. Highly recommend this class and Rudy.
Alan Rudy cracks me up! he's a great professor who will teach you a great deal about sociology, and yourself! I'd recomend him for any course
Mr. Alan P. Rudy, i would not even call a professor because he doesnt teach anything! For the first half hour of class we would talk about sports and what people did over the weekend, and also the most random things you could think of that did not relate to sociology at all. I hated him and i would not reccoment him at all what so ever!
Great class! Its mildly hard cause he makes you think and look at the world from a third persons point of view. If you can take this class with him. It helps if you go to class too. the conversation a fun and he keeps them interesting. Take his class!
He is a quack. He is a terrible teacher and expects way too much out of his students. The powerpoints he posted online were incomplete and useless when it came to the test. He complains about his home life and money problems ALL the time in class. pointless teacher...
I think that he was a really good professor. Most of the time, we just had discussions that lasted the majority of the class, but that's what made it interesting and kept me coming back to class.
I absolutely loved this class! Do the reading before class! This class really changed my life and opened up my eyes to different perspectives. If you want a boring, easy, and straight forward professor then take it with someone else! You can really learn a lot from this class if you are open minded.
Do the reading as much as possible. Talk in class its more fun if you do...the more people interested the more you will love the class. Half the class is about current events but it shouldn't matter if you read the basic definitions of the book. great professor brilliant mind.
Rudy is a good teacher. he expects a lot from you and to be up to date on current events. he shows you different view points of people around the world so be open to new ideas. Go to class and get involved in discussions, he ll respect your opinion. Notes are power point and exams are off these notes. he posts them on blackboard.
he is a really nice guy but horrible teacher, he doesn't teach. all he does all hour is gives his opinion on current events, and tells his life stories. he never brings up anything about soc.
This guy is basically a nut job...at first. You will think he is crazy and that nothing he says is relevent in any way. Once you get used to his teaching style, you'll realize he is actually a pretty cool guy. I have no interest in SOC so I didn't do too hot in the class, but if you do the readings and participate, you'll do fine.
Mr. Rudy is an awful teacher & he talks about himself a lot. Bad class because he curses and talks horribly towards certain points and there have been many times where I have wanted to walk out of class, but I couldn't because we have to do different types of work all the time in this class..I would never recommend someone for this class ever!!!!
There are just no words!!
Please save yourself and don't take this class. It is by far the worst class I have ever been in. It is so hard and the class may as well be in spanish it's so hard to understand. Not to mention we basically recieved 2 finals both in essay form...because we don't have other classes to worry about.
Wow Central, another professor who actually teaches material that will benefit students in the future. Yes, Rudy does expect his students to do work, but at the end of the year he makes it so anyone with a brain gets an A. Great teacher if you want to learn something for your cost and future. Great job at being a TEACHER and not another faculty.
mr. rudy was confusing at first because he didnt just talk about sociology like I thought he would. but when I did the readings i got that pretty much all the stuff he talks about that seems like it doesnt make sense actually does! Its way better than just boring notes and stuff. hes also a really nice guy and helped me out at the end of the year!
Being an advanced sociology student I was worried that I would grow bored in a 100 level soc class. This was far from the case; Dr. Rudy's methods, interaction with students, and (often unusual) class material were all more than enough to maintain the interest of an advanced student. Furthermore, he treats his students with the utmost respect.
Prof. Rudy is an awesome guy overall, it seems frustrating at times that the lectures are not necessarily what is tested on, but the class is set up extremely well in that you have a lot of easy points available to you if you will do the work to improve your grade, including extra credit papers throughout the semester. He curves all exams too...
hardest class i've ever had. Rudy is really nice and HE knows what he's talking about, but does not lecture so it is understandable for the students to have a clue what he's talking about. all exams were take home essays and difficult. Blogs online are also used to go along with book readings which do help. bottom line: class is HARD!!!
most of these people are extremely ignorant.rudy is an amazing teacher although i would say his class is hard. im used to getting material handed to me on a silver platter but if you do the readings before class LIKE HE TELLS YOU TO you should be able to follow. he gives extra credit papers throughout the sem. which helps alot. i defrecommend rudy.
Funny....but boring
This is the only class I've ever failed at central, and I'm a senior. I've gotten A's or B's in every other soc. class. He is a good guy but very unclear about his expectations, and the essay exams are VERY hard. I would recommend taking someone else for this class.
Rudy is good to listen to if you weren't being tested on what he was saying. Says to buy the book but hates using it. Has interesting lectures but they do not relate to anything on any exam. Take someone else for this class!
if you go to his class and actually pay attention the class is a lot easier than everyone else says. hes a great professor once you realize his line of thinking. READ THE MATERIAL before going to class it makes it so much easier. read ch 1 from his book then apply it to every other reading.
He is good to listen to and well you have to do the readings. I missed class a couple times so I just made sure I read up on things. Also do the response things..that's what killed my grade was not doing them.
By far one of the most intresting teachers I have ever had. He is funny and keeps it intresting. He is passionate and he really gets you thinking. Read the chapters, thats really all he asks. He is down to earth and treats you like a real person. I would take a class just becuase he was teaching it.
I should have went to his class more often; but when I did go he kept me interested. He is funny & relates a lot of the material to his own life or things that students can relate to. He also brings up good points & makes you think. The textbook is a must -- just make sure you read it n you will pass.
class is interesting but the test are hard, unrealted and impossible to study for. very hard to write notes and go along with power point. Do not recomend
He seems interesting toward the beginning of the semester. Then I realized that nothing he says relates to the material. The material presented is very unclear, and he rants about his own life far too much. I DO NOT recommend him as a professor.
His class is dumb and recomend takin soc 100 with a different professior that actually tells you what the exam will be covering and uses a book
Do not take Rudy for sociology. He grades unfairly, does not explain test alternatives well, and does not follow a book. Has students buy book, however doesn't believe in what the book says, hard to tell what's on the test. Swears a lot, very unprofessional. Avoid if possible.
DO NOT TAKE SOC 100 WITH RUDY!! He is a terrible teacher, swears constantly, and disagrees with half of the book he wants the students to buy. Talks about himself and his accomplishment constantly. If the tests were about him everyone would pass. Just find a different teacher for this is you can. Avoid at all costs.
Awful!!! He sits in class and goes on rants! You never know what he is talking about! It takes him forever to grade things! He doesn't explain assigments well at all! I go to class like once ever 4 weeks because it is torture to sit through
Worst professor ever. If you have to take sociology, PLEASE don't take it with Alan Rudy!
likes to think he's robin williams and treats his lectures like a standup gig..i didnt pay money to listen to him test his lounge act
I would strongly recommend to not take Alan Rudy for SOC 323. I got an A- and that is because of the curve. He does not do lectures well and tries to make class interesting, which is nice, but it ends up feeling like a waste of time.
Screw all these idiots who rated him badly, they were just lazy class is easy if u do the work. This is my second time taking him, I switched my whole schedule to take him again. He's not like any prof I've had he's a breath of fresh air, it's refreshing. I WANT to go to class. Any teacher that can get me out of bed is definitely amazing
He tried to make class fun and interesting which was nice but I dont feel like that is how Theory should be taught. He told a lot of his own personal stories and as well a lot of his conversations were quite "dirty". He tried to describes different assignments in ways no Intro class would understand.
If you don't do the reading before class you will not understand his lectures. You should attend his lectures for clarity. Despite the negative comments people have made, he is a good professor! Those of you that didn't do will most likely never did the reading or bothered to go to class. I like him a lot as a professor and person. I recommend him!
Prof Rudy teaches his class as if you haven many soc theory classes in the past. His lectures are not to teach but to elaborate on theories he assumes everyone should know in depth. Requires in depth correlation of subject matter and only 100 points total. Contradicts his own idea of the way students learning and professors teaching shouldn't go!
This Professor requires 30+ pages of reading before every class. If readings aren't done before lectures then they sound even more like a different language than they already are. Expects extensive knowledge about sociological theories and definitely is not treated as an intro class. DON'T TAKE, unless you know theories like the back of your hand.
Alan Rudy is very funny and entertaining, but I took the class at the same time as the previous two posters, and I have to agree. He also stated once in class that he and his colleagues make fun of us. Essay questions are extremely complex, readings are meant for theory experts like him and excruciating to try to read.
Rudy is a charismatic person He has a good understanding of the subject material and expects you to as well. “No slides” and “Incomprehensible lectures” Half of our class failed the first test His text book is atrocious His test are book reports in disguise with to little time to complete
I am on the deans list I attended class every time I hold a 3.5 GPA in a double major Psy and CJ I did the readings and I spent 6-12 hours per assignment I expect to fail this class
Teacher is VERY smart, but kind of goes all over the place when in discussion sometimes. He knows his stuff, and I'm not sure if it is the complexity of the material or the way he presents it, but the tests are rather hard. A few of the readings are interesting and applicable to life, but overall I consider this class only mediocre.
This is a high level theory class so of course the material and essays are going to be complex. He is an entertaining prof who can almost always clarify a concept if needed. His class does consist of him lecturing basically the whole time though so make sure you can sit still and listen for the whole period. I highly recommend him.
Best teacher I have ever had! I absolutely loved attending his class, just to listen to his amazing insight on the world. He expects students to engage the material and will not accept superficial responses. If you really want to learn something take this class. He provokes so much thought in a students head!
Rudy is tough but he's good. You have to put in the work and work your ass off to understand it, though. He's brilliant and often loses track of a) the actual point of a lecture and b) the fact that not everyone is as smart as he is. Classes aren't mandatory, I almost never went but I did the reading and worked hard on the essays and pulled an A.
While Rudy has quite a bit of knowledge, he is probably one of the most unorganized professors I've ever had. Throughout the semester you write blog posts/comments about readings - the exams are take home. He takes months to grade exams and his lectures are absolutely worthless. Be prepared to hear about his anger towards not being tenured.
Rudy is a VERY smart man, but a terrible teacher. The assignments were not too bad, but the exams (take-home)seemed unclear. Rudy is VERY unorganized; no have a syllabus prepared until a few weeks into the class and then did not follow it when he finally did. He also did not grade assignments for months. Also very condescending.
Easily the best professor at CMU. He has an aggressive teaching style that is not for everyone, but this is because he expects his students to think critically and to be prepared. SOC classes are generally regarded as fluff at CMU, but Dr. Rudy will have none of that in class. If you're into NCLB style classes, don't bother registering.
Rudy is a very smart man, but a terrible teacher. Teaching is not his calling. Soc theory is hard, but even harder with him as a professor. He doesn't grade, doesn't give direction, and doesnt teach. You have to teach your self. There is no book, but he gives you 20 to 30 page article to read every day. These articles are hard to read and long.
This class was a waste of my time. I didn't learn anything in the class that was beneficial. There was no point in going to class only to sit there and listen to him voice his opinion about everything. Its called social theory, but we didn't learn about any theories. Don't take him if you actually want to learn something.
Really loves the topic and has lots of insightful ways to connect the readings to real life but there were SOOO many readings and a lot of vague information. I felt like I was reading 40 pages of an article to get one main idea that he would extrapolate and take a whole different direction. Very discussion based class.
Professor Rudy loved to hear himself talk. That was all the class was. He talked at us about nothing pertaining to the class for an hour and 15 minutes twice a week. It was painful,I didn't go half the time. Luckily, he was decent with grading, when you got grades back, that was. He is funny, but I still would never take another one of his classes.
Never grades and this is the hardest class you'll ever take for a soc major... He loves to talk and lecture! You won't know what your grade is till the end so you are clueless throughout the whole semester. Theory will never be interesting to learn about from anyone.
It's the end of the semester and I still haven't seen one grade of mine. I have no clue to what my grade is, I could be failing and I wouldn't know. Come on....
Didn't grade anything until the last week of class and there's a TON of reading. We would read 40 pages and from one general idea, he would lecture for an hour and go a whole different direction. Sometimes hard to follow his sports references if you know nothing about sports. If you get any emails from him about your grades, keep them till the end.
This class would have been extremely boring if he wasn't the teacher. He actually made learning about different theories interesting. You can tell he knows a lot about what he's talking about. I learned a lot of things that I could apply to the real world from his lectures. His "tests" are kind of hard, but they make you think outside of the box.
super smart. Made the topic interesting
You can tell he's really smart and knows what he's talking about. Go to class and pay attention and you'll learn a lot.... not just about soc theories, but life advice too.
Read around 50 pages a week, on a good day. And then each class he drags on and on about the exact stuff you might have read if you put in that much time. Does not GRADE anything in a timely manner.
This class was a joke! We wrote four papers (2 for the final) , and each time he'd change the deadline. VERY unclear about what he wanted out of the papers.. He'll often go on rants about old bands that he likes and dislikes. Out of the whole semester there wasn't even 100 points to earn.
Before taking this class I was very skeptical. I read many reviews about how this professor's class was pointless. However, I took him this spring and this has be far been the best class I have ever taken in my whole college career. Long lectures and reading but you take out what you put in. I learned so much I will use in my career.
Lectures were suppose to be based on readings he posted on BB. The readings were very long. Then when he actually lectured he barely covered the reading. His lectures went in all sorts of different directions. Exams were take home essays. He would say he was going to post the rubric then wouldnt for a few more days and the essays are very confusing
The class is based of at home readings (usually 15+ pages) and then he lectures about the reading for the entire class. Required to read 3 in specific and write blogs about them and then 3 more readings will be discussed in groups. All exams are take home and submitted online, but the guidelines are super unclear and he doesn't use blackboard
Awful teacher, never grades your assignments, never talks about the material in class, horrible class, boring lectures always gets off topic, never has time for anything to do with the class.
Rudy is one of my favorite professors I've had in all my five years. I've taken two classes with him and he's incredibly knowledgable about what he teaches. You have to work hard, read and listen carefully. If you think outside the box and work, you'll earn a solid grade and learn amazing stuff.
This was one of the worst classes I have taken. Professor Rudy never answers emails, and he doesn't even grade anything! You sit there wondering worrying or stressing the entire semester because you don't know if you're going to pass -_- The readings he gives you are extremley dense and boring; very hard to understand some of them. Avoid him!
I left class feeling more confused then when I came in. I can tell that he is passionate about his field but he does not teach it well. At this point in time I would not be able to tell you any of the theories of which we are supposed to be learning. Instead I can spout off random facts. He also does not grade anything.
Very kind and understanding towards students. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate. Provided interesting articles and podcasts instead of textbook reading. Some were over our heads, but I learned a lot! The course was challenging in a positive way. It was a slow process to get grades back, but was a generous grader.
Rudy is a very smart guy and he makes that very clear. The class was graded out of 100 points total, so make sure to keep on top of all of the work. He's a tough professor and does not grade often, but if he can tell you are making an effort you'll do pretty well.
Rudy is a solid choice. He's kind of a tough grader but he's a great teacher.
This class was very disorganized, and it made it hard to learn anything. During lectures, and he gets distracted and tells a lot of stories about his personal life. He gives really unclear instructions for the assignments, and then will take a lot of points off for "not meeting the criteria," even though the criteria is not clearly outlined.
Rudy cares a lot about what he teaches and it shows. He also knows a lot abot what he teaches and is great at presenting it. Take this class if you want to have your mind vastly opened about the world around you. The reading is sometimes tedious but Rudy breaks it down in class in a very nice way. And he's got great taste in music.
This professor is very off topic and does not lecture about anything that has to do with the class. He talks about random topics for an hour and 15 minutes and does not discuss any homework in class.
Alan is a really nice guy and is extremely smart, but his teaching style is all over the place. He'll be talking about one thing and immediately changes the subject without notice. Impossible to take notes because you never know what he's talking about, and although exams are take home, they are nearly impossible to know what he means/wants.
Rudy is one of the best teachers I've had at CMU. As the other commenters have said, he's all over the place but if you're able to pay attention to him you realize everything he says makes sense. Taking Rudy for this class has helped me learn more about the world than any other class I've ever taken. If you put in the time you'll get a good grade.
So much reading, and his lectures seem to be very off the wall sometimes and can be hard to follow. But if you read the readings he assigns, it all makes sense. Be sure to be active and actively consider what he says, and it can be a great, thought provoking class. However, if you just want a class to blow off, he might not be the best option.
His lectures are difficult to take notes, don't bother with that. Show up having read the readings and pay attention. Apply the readings and lectures to the exams!! This class is definitely not a blow off. Just do what's in the syllabus and you'll be good.
If you show up and take notes you will do fine, other wise he gives no warning as to what will be on the exam and will leave you searching for documentaries or answers. This class is lecture heavy but he gets very off topic and swears a lot. sometimes he is hard to follow, although he tends to grade pretty easy.
He is one of the most difficult professors to understand because he is so sarcastic so often, you can't tell what he does or doesn't agree with. As long as you do the readings, you should probably be fine. He breathes swear words.
Professor Rudy is an interesting character. His lectures were very inspiring and interesting, they absolutely destroyed my perception of the world. However, his class is too disorganized for my taste. He often goes off topic and expects you to know everything he does from his lectures, and write about.
In the beginning of the semester, I did not like this man. To start, his syllabus was 22 pages long (it's worth the hassle to print). His directions for everything are not straightforward. The Q's he asks on the take-home writing exams are very hard to interpret. He often makes references to things without explanation. Gets better as semester went.
There is a reading everyday for this class, and they are usually thought provoking and helpful. If you come into lecture not having done the reading it will be difficult to follow along. The class was amazing and I learned a lot, but if you're looking for an easy A I would not recommend him. Great guy and professor if you put in the work!
Great guy, awful teacher.
Great professor. Despite the negativity surrounding this class Rudy teaches it very well. You DO need to show up to understand the material but if youre not understanding Rudy will be there to help. He grades you more on if you show that you read the material and attempted to understand it rather than getting it perfect.
This was the worst class I've taken for sure. I have done 9 assignments so far (9th week) including one exam and no grades back yet. I have no idea what I've done right or wrong. He is so confusing and DOES NOT GRADE!!! I thought I liked him at the beginning but he keeps getting more confusing. You have to read before every class. DO NOT TAKE W HIM
This class was very difficult but worth it. Many people don't like him but if you really listen to what he says you'll learn a lot. The exams were take home papers, and he had blogs for the other homework. The readings for his class were difficult but he does explain them well in class. If you don't go you will not understand them.
Each day is filled with a lecture supposedly of the reading assigned prior, yet seems more like rambling nonsense. Extremely tough grader. Will grade your take home exam paper weeks later and then blame the education system for why he graded ur paper with an F. The readings assigned for EACH class are about 40+ pages. Do yourself a favor and AVOID!
I really liked Alan's personality, but his class was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. I passed, but by the skin of my teeth. He is very lecture heavy, and has no other content while he lectures, and it is very difficult to follow his train of thinking. Im not sure what he is like in other courses, but theory with him is very difficult.
Dr. Rudy is easily the worst professor I've ever had. He's inaccessible and hard to work with, and doesn't explain material well at all. He takes a difficult class and makes it harder than it has to be, and he never enters grades in a timely fashion. He's unclear in his expectations, and it's nearly impossible to keep up with the homework.
Love him! He is very passionate about teaching this specific subject. Is a jokester and is very engaging with students. Classes were easy, you show up and those are your points for the day. No homework besides readings he assigns and there were only about 4 quizzes (papers) and the final was a paper as well which was not very difficult or long.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He rarely responds to emails and when he does they are mean responses. End of the semester I have grades for 2 sections of notes, he has me failing both. and the only other grades are exams! ridiculous, almost impossible to pass the class. He is such a harsh grader with notes. awful. avoid. would give 0 if I could.
This class is very hard to pass. There is no work, no assignments JUST NOTES, easy A right?? NOPE! when it comes to grading your notes he's tough. Most professors are okay with you doing general notes, notes on what you have taken from the lecture/reading, he wants more which is hard to give when you don't understand the readings and lectures.
The worst teacher I have ever had. He grades harshly on notes plus it took him the entire semester to grade one exam. Then he forced two more exams back to back, do not take him unless you are good at notes and you're not that anxious to know your grade in that class
As much as I liked the class material and the readings, his smug delivery made me question his credentials. He cities random facts in the same way that your dad talks about airplanes. He's going from the Boeing 747 to the Douglas DC-2, and you're wondering if he's even getting the names right... Feel like I have to factcheck everything
Professor Rudy is amazing! He is a little non-traditional in his lectures and teaching, but as long as you go to class, participate a little, and do the readings you'll be good! He is funny (also non-traditional humor) and brings the real world into sociology concepts and lectures. Overall, wonderful guy and would recommend him and his classes.
He is the worst professor I have ever has. If you don't agree with Dr. Rudy, you are wrong, he even uses this philosophy on exams that ask for your opinion. He never gave a grading scale, so even though I got a 91%, he gave me a B+, and then wouldn't even have a conversation with me as to why. Don't take.
hard class, not easy to take online during a pandemic. rudy was not accessible to students, required a ton of reading, but the class is passable. if you put in a good effort, you can do well: i finished with 100% But i had to teach myself, he was no help. also was rude towards students when they got low exam scores :/
very long winded, never gets straight to the point. questions on assignment are very long will have you confused we turn something in once or twice a week but he “ungrades” so we won’t know our grade until the end of semester I dislike his teaching was very hard to learn, if you can take another professor please do so.
One of the better professors that I have had. Great if you respond well to lecture/group discussion. There is a fair amount of reading, but it is not overwhelming. No exams, grades are determined by self-reflections. You would have to try to fail or get a bad grade in this class.
Professor Rudy is knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. The class is just a hard subject and I wasn't really sure what we were supposed to be taking from the lectures. He uses "un-grading" so you give yourself a grade you think you deserve and he provides feedback on that and offers his opinion on your grade as well. So many readings.
If you go to class and do the work you should get an A. Give a shit about the class and you'll do well. I would think anyone would rates him bad was not an active participant. Readings can be a lot but they're good to read. He's passionate too. Be ready to structure your own calendar because he won't remind you about stuff.
Hated this class so much. Did not grade anything so I never knew how I was doing and never gave feedback. Overall lectures were hard to follow.
Honestly, I think anyone giving a bad review either did not participate or did not understand the meaning of his process. He used "un-grading" for this course meaning you get no grades as feedback, but he gives great feedback on your work. He is very understanding if you reach out to him about anything and always offers his support.
I feel like all the bad reviews were from students who did not put in effort in this class. Rudy was awesome and made his lectures funny and interesting even when talking about terrible issues. Was somewhat hard to take notes but once you understand you will fly through the course. Interesting reading choices and love the un-grading. Very good prof
Very conflicted! I hated this class at first. I wanted to switch to a different prof, but there wasn't one. He makes uncomfortable jokes. Weird class structure, but it's fine as long as you're on top of things. Others said you need to participate, that's not true. As long as you do good work, you can get an A without speaking in class. Be cautious.
Lecture heavy class, and Rudy can say things in a confusing way sometimes, but overall great professor. Felt like he was willing to work with us and took our feedback seriously. Have him again for another class soon and I'm looking forward to it.
Don't get me wrong, he's a good person, but lectures so confusing. There are no power points/ notes provided by him, just him talking the whole time, so if you can't learn that way avoid this professor. The assignments he gives are lengthy in question which often misleads the point of the question itself, at least in my experience.
He is definitely confusing at first. His lectures are very in depth and do follow a structure you just have to take good notes. He always asks for feedback on his teaching and is willing to adjust. The workload is average and you have plenty of time to do it. If you stay on top of your work it is easy and he gives good feedback on your assignments.
Horrible
This professor did not give us a syllabus until a month into the semester, and he continued to change it. He was harsh in the grading, saying that our writing did not reflect any learning, but his lectures were not useful and he continually talked about sex when it was not relevant to the content.
Rudy's style of teaching is definitely different, and it takes some time getting used to. Although, I do still think that he was a good professor who truly wanted his students to learn and think deeply about the material that was presented. This was a difficult class, but you can pass with a good grade if you put forth the effort to do so.
Rudy's teaching style takes some getting used to, but if you put in the effort, you'll do well. The workload is average, and his un-grading policy provides valuable feedback. I found unstuck study really helpful for study prep and staying on top of the material.
Rudy is very difficult with his discussion boards. You have to go into the syllabus to know what day you need to do your discussion board. Depending on what group youre in you have to do it before class so don't get him at 9:30. He talks about his son constantly and doesnt have straight forward lectures. Get ready to write live notes in class..
Although I liked Dr. Rudy as a person, as he seemed very genuine and nice while I had him, I did not like how he taught. He tends to go on loosely related tangents that are easy to zone out through and are confusing. We weren't graded on much, 4 assignments and discussion boards, both of which were tedious to get to and complete. I missed one, C+.
This professor gave out at least 20-30 pages for each reading. There were two renderings a week. I also had to write 6 different papers on the topics and 4 different papers for his upgrading thing. I t was a lot however, I think professor Rudy is really funny.
100 and 301. He oftentimes goes on tangents on his lectures that have little to do with the overall topic. Annoyingly contrarian, will ask questions and then usually shoot down an answer with "Yes, but not quite" every. single. time. Overly pretentious style of speaking and writing, but makes sense considering he went to an Ivy-adjacent school.
Currently trying to do another god awful self assessment and what he talked about was no where near what the kind of questions he gave were on. COME TO CLASS PREPAIRED. Skip class and you will fail. He's very difficult to understand if you're in the back until he starts cussing a storm.
Lectures encouraged me to think more politically (what i gained). pushes political beliefs. read the articles before class. reread before self assessments. annotate them (one note by Microsoft). Don't procrastinate. beneficial to do self assessment piece by piece throughout the week. Attendance mandatory. doesn't remember names. made me feel dumb.
