You can get an A in his class if you are good at self teaching. He doesnt know how to answer questions with out looking at his notes or answers. He will not answer questions that he hasnt already worked out. How did he ever get a PHD.
This guy is dumb! How the heck did he get his PHD. He doenst know how to answer simple questions without looking at the answer key. He uses overhead projector which everyone knows sucks and makes learning difficult. Take Kim-Park, she is much much better.
What they said. How did he ever get a Ph.D.?????!
provides very good examples
easy grader. material hard to understand.premade overheads are hard to learn from,
He is very interested in the subject and very helpful in explaining the material.
He doesn't know basic algebra. Some one should test this guy on his skills. PhD? His math is at a very low level. Even other faculty know about his lack of ability. He had to look at the sol. manual before he could answer questions in class
He has great examples and is very clear.
I learned a lot. He kept the class interesting.
I learned a lot in this class. He showed how useful the information is in many different situations.
this guy is an idiot. its an easy A if you know how to teach yourself...but dont expect any useful lectures at all.
avoid if you can
grrrrrrrr bad

Not orgenized, a mess for a leccture, you will learn nothing!!!

DO NOT GET HIM!!! soooooooooo boring!!
straight to the point. he does a good job.
doesn't know anything but kinda nice guy
Very easy going professor. During the test i would ask him question and he would basically tell me the answers. If you go to class and study occasionally there is no reason why you shouldnt pass his class with at least a B. Very Easy, and very nice professor!
he's a nice guy, not too great socially. he loves his subject, so if your an avid math intellectual you'll see eye to eye. he is a bit boring, but his examples are very clear. and he'll go over as many examples as you want. he does tend to tell you the answer when you ask during a test. that's how i got my A! Keep up with the hw to pass as well.
Easy class. We only had three homeworks. Seems like a laid back kind of guy. Only thing that was annoying was that he would start a sentence then slowly become very quiet. He looks like a very nice guy.
The dude is kinda corny but i think he is a really cool dude. He is helpful and makes a stupid class like UNIV 100 somewhat more interesting
Great teacher. He really made this course as interesting as possible.
boring boring boring. I know he is very nice in person but he should just focuses on doing research and advising stat students. Please consider to learn on your own if taking his classes. Going to office hours won't help because he is super busy and his office is a mess. AVOID
one of the best math professor on campus. class is a bit boring, but he will over and over examples until you get it. he also gives hints during the test. super nice guy, little hw, drops quizs, and tests are from hw and quizs. an easy A if u study a bit.
avoid this man like the plague; totally irresponsible, plays favorites, doesn't know crap, and yet thinks he is a great teacher, plus he is BORING and plays favorites
plays favorites; not responsible; doesn't know what he is talking about; and extremely boring; avoid at all possible cost
Very innocent when it comes to the subject he was teaching. Is it true he got an "Honorary Doctorate Degree" in Stats?
safer is the best, changed my major to stats because of him. tests are easy, quizes are extremely easy, hw is not so bad. he gives hints during the test, so just ask. i highly recommend him for spring 09.
Extremely unorganized in the first few weeks. Improved to slightly unorganized afterwards. Assigns all homework through an expensive, online textbook program. However, tests are extremely difficult because they do not reflect textbook material. His PowerPoint lectures are mind-numbingly dull. He's not mean, though.
he's awful!!!!!!!!
the assignments were a bit tedious. the tests were hard. his lectures were so boring. bad teaching skills.. but nice guy
he made me hate math so much.. had his TA do all the work, i felt so bad for the guy. his tests are not multiple choice and is just ridiculous. avoid him if you can.
He wasnt that bad, if you actually pay attention and study before the test you should be able to pass. His tests are a bit hard.
one of the best math/stats prof. at csulb. he is the reason why i changed my major to stats. its not his fault people are stupid. if you cant hang, go to a city college.
Thanks for the review Mom!
He was one of the worst professors I've ever had; I'm sure he could be a good professor to an upper level Statistics class, but, he was required to teach a freshman class, and failed miserably. The class shrunk by over 100 people from the beginning of the semester until the end.
If you are a freshman, then I do not recommend taking this class. The professor is very hard to follow and his tests are very hard. It is very hard to understand how he grades the test. Plus he assigned online assignment/homework that is not accurate.
If you do the homework and understand it, it's an easy A for sure. He's kind of all over the place while teaching, but it's not a hard subject and he keeps it interesting. Quizzes are once a week and he'll tell you what's on them the class before, and drops some at the end of the semester. Easy A for sure.
The class is pretty dull, sure. But the homework is easy, and if you do that, so are the tests. I didn't have any online assignments, so I don't know what that guy was talking about down there. If you're just taking it for a math GE credit, you could do a lot worse.
If you have never seen stat before then this class will be confusing to you. homework is a must. most likely going to be in a lecture hall, harder to ask questions. if you dont like math you going to dread taking this.
His lectures are very confusing. And his exams and homework are just as confusing. However, he does curve a lot! i went from a C to a B after he curved.
SO TERRIBLE. his lectures are hard because he just goes through slides of his powerpoint rather than going to problems himself. He never goes through the steps of a problem so you have to figure it out with your book. and his tests are sooo hard. Good luck. I got a C and i consider myself a math person.
HARD AVOID! he was a horrible teacher just read off of his powerpoints which just follow with the book so i basically taught my myself the entire time. His tests are very HARD you have to STUDY ALOT! alot of homework! ended up with a B after ALOT OF WORK
This class is a very dry class. He goes from powerpoints. Homework due at same time as tests. 3 tests. You don't really have to go to class.
He is very boring, I could not pay attention in this class. However, it was on of the easiest classes I've taken in college, I barely attended and easily got an A. If you just read the notes, this class is a piece of cake.
The class was so boring and he reads off his lectures directly from the power points he puts up on his site in class. I had to buy an i>clicker for just a couple of weeks and he decided not to use them anymore. In the first couple of weeks, unless he said not to bring your i>clickers anymore, you need to use it. I am glad I passed that class.
It is hard to follow him at times. But, his class is pretty easy if you "get" stats. Overall, I didn't think the class was very hard. You just need to study and do the homework.
Safer is difficult to follow and is not helpful. I love math and this is the first math class that I have ever hated. His midterms are difficult but his quizes are easy. However, both midterms are worth 33% of your grade each and the final is worth 22%. I had to teach myself the material. I even went to his office hours and he wasn't very much help
WORST TEACHER AT CSULB! Avoid at all costs!!! Reads off of powerpoints that are directly from the book. Does NOT teach the class at all! Not helpful, tons of hw and the midterms are very hard! This was supposed to be an easy class but he makes it difficult. I tought myself through the book. If you can, TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER!!!
he's not helpful at all. his class is very boring. even though i went to class everyday i basically taught myself with the book. as long as youre good at math and can teach yourself you'll do well. stats isn't a very hard class. you turn in the homework at the beginning of the 3 tests.
Gives you a practice test before each test that is almost exactly like the actual test. Not sure why people are complaining...
His "lectures" are just him standing there, reading his powerpoint (word-by-word) in his monotone voice. I went through a whole semester of this and failed miserably. I retook the same class to clear my fail and ended up spending more time with the book than talking to him. When asked to clarify something, he just slowly repeats himself.
His lectures are so boring, he just reads his powerpoint. I stopped going to his lectures during the end of the semester because there was no point. And no his test are not anything like the practice test! You'll learn more from the book than him. Don't take him take someone else of take it some place else! Save yourself the boredom and annoyance.
Before the class, I was nervous about taking this class. It is not in my major and was considered a hard and somewhat boring subject. However, Prof. Safer really made the class enjoyable. His interest in the subject got me to study hard and I learned a lot and liked it.
Lectures are boring and you can teach it to yourself using the book to fill in his powerpoint. Not helpful, though the study guide for his exams are nice and just like the actual test. The only 2 midterms are worth 34% of your grade though and the rest is homework (10%) and the final. Avoid if you want to learn and really need the course though.
To be honest not a very interesting Professor. He stays too long on slides and doesn't efficiently use the class time. But it really shouldn't be a hard class all you do is bulks of homework due online and gives you a month each section to finish. One midterm and final. Gives you a cheat sheet. Only problem with this class is the unmotivation
Please save yourself! Not helpful at all, basically reads off the powerpoints and spends lots of time discussing irrelevant things. The book is much more helpful than he is, so YESS BUY THE BOOK!
He reads straight from the power point, when you want to clarify something he basically repeats whats on the slide. Not helpful at all, I had to learn from the book. The class is boring and people leave the class (constantly hearing the door open and close). Basically unmotivated to hear him and be in class
You can tell he knows his stuff, but he's very dull so it's really hard to stay attentive. There really is no need to go to class other than to see what material from the textbook he says you don't need to know.
Practice exams are given a week before exam, but be sure you read of what the problems are asking for.
Very boring. All he does is read off of powerpoints. You basically have to teach yourself or get tutoring because you wont learn anything from his lectures. Its just so hard to focus with his monotone voice and he is not very engaging like other math professors. I highly suggest choosing another professor.
You only really need to show up the day he reviews for the test and the test day. That's basically the only time he answers questions and explains thoroughly. All homework is online and you get 3 tries for every question. Rarely used to textbook. You have to teach yourself everything since he reads straight for the powerpoint. Take another teacher.
Professor was very boring. Did not teach at all, mainly read off the power points slides. I resorted to teaching myself via youtube and tutoring. I sat next to a girl when we got our midterms back, she received 100% and never came to class (Self taught). As where I attended every class and received a 76.
HORRIBLE TEACHER DO NOT TAKE HIM. honestly the worst teacher i have ever taken. He taught me nothing, i had to teach myself with the online homework. If it wouldn't have taken stats in high school I would not have passed. He is a nice guy but genuinely a horrible teacher. take him at your own risk
Worst teacher I've ever had. Just reads off of the slides and never actually explains the process of what needs to be done. If you're the type of student that can't learn by yourself or need examples to understand things, stay away. Taught myself everything from the textbook and youtube tutorials. Literally only went to class for the tests.
HORRIBLE professor all he does is read off of his power points. does not teach at all you have to teach your self does not use the book he does online homework that is stupid. he gives out the practice exam a week before class and goes over the answers a day before the test so it does not give you much time to try to understand the problems.
This guy is like wet match in a dark cave. If you have no interest in statistics, i wish you the best of luck and i hope you enjoy reading because you'll be teaching yourself almost all of the material.
AVOID AT ALL COST!!! Horrible professor. Isn't clear and just read off his power point slides. The grading is also unclear.
Professor Safer is a decent MATH 380 instructor. There are 2 midterms and 1 final. You will need to bring the book every single day of class. He is a really easy grader on tests, so if you make a fatal mistake, it would not be detrimental to your test grade. If you need to take MATH 380, Professor Safer will do a decent job!
In my opinion, he is a horrible professor. His powerpoints are just fill in the blanks and they're all directly from the textbook. I did not attend alot of his classes because I could learn from the textbook on my own. He's also really bad at explaining as well as having many errors in his powerpoints. Pick a different professor!
His lectures are really long and boring. Most people don't attend. he gives online homework, 2 Midterms, and 1 final. He gives out a study guide for the tests which helps a lot and he gives you all the formulas for the test. I ended up having to teach myself 90% of the material. Its a doable class as long as you put in the work.
Alan was not liked by most students this semester because he was not good at lecturing about his material. He specifically said there would be no word problems on tests, yet there are. Beware of his crazy long and frustrating tests.
Try not taking this class with this teacher because unless you've learned some stats you're going to have a hard time in this class. His lecture will not help at all. It's pretty much a self-learning class and unless you're for sure you can take stats without the teacher's help, I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING THIS CLASS!!!!!
The book is the exact same thing as the website. He goes through everything he asks for on the tests during the review days, and to really understand it's best to ask clarifying questions. He doesn't finish some of his sentences when talking, and can speak off topic sometimes, but it's manageable.
He did not catch the interest of his students. Lectures are often long and very confusing because he is mono toned through the whole thing. There are 3 tests (Two Midterms & the Final). Also there is homework and comes in handy when studying for exams. My advice is to make a lot of friends in this class because you are going to need the help.
I got through this class by making friends and we all taught each other the criteria. He just reads straight off the power points in a boring, monotone voice. His tests, however, were not very difficult and you get a study that's similar to the test. There are two midterms and a final that's worth less than the two. Course? Not so bad overall.
Lectures are not organized. Very monotones voice that makes it hard to keep up with lectures. After a first couple of classes, barely anyone started showing up since homework is online and already posts dates of midterms online. Do not recommend at all. Goodluck
The entire class is based on powerpoint slides, nothing else. Homework is done online. Has a very monotone voice that makes it boring and hard to understand. Get ready to self teach and study a lot. Make lots of friends. Attendance is not mandatory in fact, the entire class only shows up on test days. goodluck
Its Dr. Safer, he has a PhD in math which is a great accomplishment. Make sure you finish the homework because he collects it. The online quizzes are easy, you get like five tries to get the right answer. There are three exams which are not too confusing if you attend class. He is one of the better math teachers
Aight, heres wsup. If you took AP stats in hs & got an A, take this class. i skipped every class, probably came like 4 or 5 times; still got an A. PEOPLE THAT KNOW STATS WELL, you'll be fine. its basically review. PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW STATS, DO NOT TAKE THIS DUDE. He will not teach you. you'll be teaching yourself. hw is fine, tests are short.
He is so monotone!!! It won't really matter if you go to class or not because more then likely you'll end up having to teach yourself the material. His PowerPoint are exactly what's in the book. He also goes through the material so fast that its impossible to catch what he is saying.
He doesn't help at all and his powerpoint are always incomplete with blanks so even if you must miss a class he won't go over it and when you are in class he takes only a little time to explain it and then he moves on with his presentation. The homework he gives are Wiley plus but he only gives you 4 tries and you get the answer wrong.
Homework and online quizzes are 13% of grade 5% is "participation" rest is exams. Quizzes are based on homework. Exams are straight forward and homework based. Lectures are useful for filtering fluff from textbook. Overall straight forward style a little underwhelming but your learn what you need.
Just do all the quizzes and copy all of the examples. Know the theorems and properties. Boring lectures. He doesn't have much structure, but gives you what you need to get an A. Tests are so much easier than hw. Stick to the fundamentals of the class. Easiest 380 professor on campus.
Horrible professor for stats 108. He talks the whole time and gives tons of different ways to solve a problem then says he to do it just one way. Not a lot of people show up after the first couple of classes so class usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Be prepared to teach yourself, he is not helpful. Try not to take him if possible!
Before I took the class, I was skeptical because the reviews said he was a hard professor. However, I think he is great. He clarifies anything you need help in, during lecture, office hours, and through email. His lectures and homework were straight forward and he provides formula sheets for all the tests. 2 midterms, 1 final.
2 midterms, 1 final, and online homework. If you took AP Stats in high school, you'll be fine. If you contact him through email or go to his study session before class, it'll be his TA. He did not really explain the material clearly. A lot of people stopped showing up to class, and only came when there was an exam.
Safer was not a good professor because he looked like he was always confused and his lectures were so dry and boring, but the class itself was easy enough to pass. Just do your homework and sample exams completely as well as understand it and you will pass the class. His tests are basically based on these two things.
Ended up dropping the class half way through. Terrible at lecturez which are basically the textbook powerpointz with blanks which he reads off of. Super monotone voice and goes off topic about some weird fruit. Homework is online and tests are difficult since you have to teach yourself. He will give out formulas for exams though.
The guy is smart he just can't teach. Take Olga Korosteleva instead
Prof Safer definitely knows his stuff but he is not a good lecturer. I have learned little from him opposed to his TA Joe. Joe was awesome and accessible
Your grade consists of 10% online homework and the rest is split between 3 tests (2 midterms and a final). Pay attention in class because he really tries to explain the concepts and he works out examples as well. The homework helps for practicing calculations problems. If you don't understand something, go to tutoring! Not an easy A unless you try
I'm not that good at this stuff, but I tried all the homework and went to the classes which helped. There is a lot of online homework, but it really helps as you get several tries on each and find out right away if you did it right. My friends who didn't study much didn't do as well as me.
I'm not a statistics major, but I surprisingly liked this class. He went over many examples that I could see how they are useful. I also learned how to use the computer statistics program to do what we learned in class.
Really good class. I learned a lot and also how to solve problems on the computer which really helps me at the job I'm working at.
He gives many clear practice problems in lectures and in exam reviews. It was not too hard.
His lectures were long and boring, so it's hard to pay attention in the class. Although he does give you a formula sheet for midterms, and he gives a lot of extra credit on the midterm exams. Tutoring helps A LOT! You have to put a lot of work into the class if you want to do well. Do the practice exams before the midterms. There's no gradebook. GL
I am familiar with statistics but Prof. Safer made this class very difficult. The lectures are long and boring. The homework is due weekly but takes about 6 hours average. Tests are kinda hard and he grades harshly. I recommend another professor or lots of tutoring.
If you took AP Stats in high school, you can sleep through all the lectures/not show up and pass with flying colors. His study guides are exactly like the test and this was the easiest class I took my first semester. Plenty of extra credit. Likes to wear Hawaiian shirts and talk about fruit.
If you took stats in high school and was great at it take him but if you did not take stats like me, don't! You will end up teaching yourself all the material because his lectures are not the best. The online homework was a lot but useful. Not much to be graded on besides hw, two midterms, and final. Midterms count for so much of grade.
I'd only recommend Dr. Safer for those who took AP Stats in high school. I took AP stats and found the class easy to follow, but don't take the class if you have no prior knowledge of statistics because you will be lost. His midterms weigh a lot and the final was kind of hard. He's also very monotone and goes off track a lot.
If you've never taken stats in high school, you are going to STRUGGLE in this class! His lectures are extremely boring (he is very monotone), making it hard to pay attention. You're most likely going to have to teach yourself. I would suggest tutoring/SI. His study guides are exactly like the tests, so make sure you do well on those.
his voice is extremely monotone and his lectures are boring. all you need to do to do well in his class is: do the online homework, extra credit opportunities, show up to class the day before an exam to get the answers on the practice exam, go home repeatedly do those problems and ur good. 2 midterms, 1 final, ec after midterms, & online graded hw
VERY MONOTONEEEEEEEE. Boring lecture. He does not go over how to do the problem physically, he just explains as he reads lectures. He requires you to just fill in the blank on the PPTs as you go over it in class. You will learn better from the online homework and textbook. Unless you're a quick learner in math, I don't suggest him.
This class was so hard. Lectures are boring and useless. TA was more helpful than the actual professor. Go to tutoring, it helps if you're not the best at math. There was three test, two midterms and one final. There was also homework online, worth a portion of your grade. If you can take another professor, do so. Do not take this class!
Professor Safer knows his stuff he just cannot teach it. His lectures are extremely useless and he is so boring, hardly ever teaches and gets nervous when students ask questions. I tried visiting for office hours and he was never there. The TA is the only reason I was capable of managing this course she was extremely helpful.
Professor Safer is very smart. However, he has no idea how to teach. He is confused while lecturing and does not know how to answer questions. I skipped class almost the entire semester but thanks to Wiley plus and his T.A. I was able to manage this class. You can learn by yourself if you put in the effort. He offers some extra credit.
I have nothing against safer but this man cannot teach at all! his lectures are extremely dull and he loses himself trying to explaon. However this class is managable to pass on your own! i recieved an A because I would go to tutoring with his TA which was amazing! honeslt Katie is the only reason I got an A in this class safer is basically useless
I'm still not sure what this class was. We did some projects using different software to find patterns and trends in data but even he wasn't that familiar with the software. Syllabus said we'd have quizzes and a final, but those never happened. Nothing we turned in ever got graded. I did the work and got an A, but have no idea what determined that.
Safer was always very nice. He offers extra credit and as long as you do the homework you will be fine. He provides study guides that are basically like the exam. He provides lots of help and genuinely wants you to pass the class. It was a class in which I taught myself the material so if you're not okay with that. Then he might not be for you.
Very smart but cannot leacture at all. Class is bring because it doesnt seem he even knows what he is talking about. Tests are very easy if you go to the TAs tutoring session day before exam. He offers lots of extra credit because so many people do bad. I would take him again.
He's actually not as bad as people said. It's mostly their fault if they do bad in his class cuz he already provided a lot of extra credits and helps, like his TA's tutoring session which is very helpful. He doesn't teach you how to do the problems w/ the calculator(no shortcut), so that's one thing to be aware of if you prefer using calculator.
Better Safer than sorry! He's not the flashiest professor, but his class wasn't bad, and I kind of wish I could've had him for STAT-381. Tbh, he seemed a bit bored with some of the material of 380, but you always saw him light up when mentioning later classes. Most of the homework is gone over in class and he was more helpful than these posts said.
During lecture, he just reads off the powerpoint notes that he creates per chapter. Sometimes he'll try to do examples, but it doesn't really help. The participation he usually gives out during lecture is the most helpful if you want to learn and practice the material. I recommend going to tutoring as well, if you still don't understand the content
Makes the course really boring. He only reads the slides and does not teach anything. Sometimes he goes over the examples but It seems he expects you to already know the answer. Exams are fairly short and he curves exams too. Extra credit is offered. Practice exams are almost alike. Honestly it was self-taught, my advice just use Chegg for help.
His class during COVID was okay. He made his T.A. teach and run the class. Lecture zooms were not helpful for the tests and we had a quiz every week. He does not teach how to use excel but instead links videos to it which sucked because most of his tests/ quizzes/ hw had excel problems in it. Had helpful and smart classmates though so I passed.
Left all of the teaching up to the teaching assistant except for the pre-recorded lectures that he posted at the beginning of the year. Gave a very lazy effort and class zoom sessions were unorganized and boring. The work load wasn't bad and wasn't to hard to pass with an easy A. Would not recommend if you are not good teaching yourself material.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE BAD AT MATH. Definitely a teach yourself class, zoom lectures were compromised of 2-3 polls that you answer and then he explains the answers. Quizzes and Homeworks due every week, but midterms and finals were 50% of your grade. Definitely go to the tutoring if you want a chance at passing.
This was a harder class for me because I hate math. I did my best on every test which I always go a D on. This led to me failing the class, or so I believed. I had like a 65% in the class. I even asked the TA and she said I was gonna fail for sure (after everything was graded). But surprise! The prof passed me with a C! He's very caring and nice!
Professor Safer is an alright guy. If you wanna do well in this class, you have to teach yourself because he doesn't really teach. He just reads off the slides and give a couple to poll questions. You're kinda on your own for the most part. There's a quiz every week so be aware of that.
The quizzes and tests are hard and have nothing to do with the lecture.
I can't speak for in-person classes, but online was a breeze. Basically, in a teach-yourself class, he doesn't even protector the quizzes or exams, so do what you will with that.
Self-taught class. His lectures and polls don't help on the exams. If you want to do well, do the homework. 90% of the questions on the assessments were based off the hw. He was flexible with correcting small errors (ie rounding errors on quizzes), but don't expect any help from him; I had to correct him a few times while getting help from him.
Professor Safer was a good professor and cares about his students. He is willing to explain things and work with you if you reach out to him. He gave us a stats project in lieu of quizzes, which I found very helpful.
Professor Safer's STAT118 class is fairly self-taught. The lectures aren't too helpful, but the homework and TA sessions make up for it. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for preparing for exams. Overall, if you put in the work, you can do well in this class.
