A lot of people didn't like him, but I really liked his class. I learned a lot, and he was really nice and always helpful. A little dry sometimes, but cool.
The class was quite boring and the notes didn't relate well on the test. The professor was overall nice but old enough to be part of the history. The class was kinda boring.

i enjoyed watson's hst 353 class. he really knows his stuff and i learned a lot. i took it in the summer so i'm sure it was easier than during the semester. there was still a lot of reading though. i found that he was helpful wanted everyone to do well
I'm in 201 now and took 202 with him before. Nice guy, very into his American history, but pretty boring sometimes. His tests at completely mutiple choice, between 75 and 100 ?'s, so he is somewhat nit-picky....but no essays and good extra credit!
Boring most of the time, but adds little comments to make the class more interesting, tests are hard and on alot of material, and he is overly excited about his topics
He's a genius, but very old-fashioned. Writes his notes on the board and reads them back to his students. Found his lectures very sleep inducing. He's very pleasant, and has potential to be a lot better.
HAHAHAA this class was HARD, but the man is a genius
Hated history til now-considered taking another hst just to have him again. Tests all multiple-choice. Don't need text. EC assignment that adds 5 points to final grade. Material's boring, but that's not his fault-it's history. Sweet old man.
Sweet old man. He could easily put you to sleep if you have no interest in history, but he almost lectures as if he's telling a story. Come to class and take good notes and you'll do fine on the tests. There is a lot of information on the tests though.
very pleasant and extremely intelligent man. relatively easy exams as long as you come and take notes. only downside is he has a voice that will lull you to sleep.
Great teacher....
This is one hard ****ing class if you don't read your notes religously, but Dr.Watson is very nice and very smart.
I had 1865 and before with Watson...he is a highly intelligent man, but can be boring at times. BUT as long as you take notes and attend class you'll be fine. OH and DONT BE LATE FOR CLASS!
Had him for NC History 1524 to 1835 for Summer I, not too hard, cram the days before the midterm and final and you'll be ok...No papers just the two test grades and come to class
Hard...only class i have made a "d" in in 3 years
Not a bad person to have for a 400 level class. He grades the final paper very hard though.
Very old and extremely boring. So cute and nice but NEVER attempt to take at 8:00..big mistake. Does like to help you however. Also not very strict and graded only on 3 tests
Do not eat food during class! especially cheetos! Boaring yet nice. Hard tests
Really great guy, really wants his students to do well. Not a hard class if you go,take notes, and study. Tests questions come straight from his lectures so you'll only do poorly if you don't go.
sweet guy, got off topic nearly every day which is distracting. tests were very nitpicky and extra credit seemed worthless bc it gives 5 pts to final grade, but he only does flat out A,B,C,D no plus or minus. STUDY YOUR ASS OFF and still dont do good is how it is
Do not take this guy. He is very hard, if you miss a class you become way behind, and the information is extremely dry and boring. He will not guide you on what to study, and your whole grade is based on 3 grades. He is not a good teacher, do not take this old man.
had for U.S. - 1865. Doesnt usually check attendance but the exams are really really hard. Only 3 and I dont know anyone that made even a B on one of them. Very boring and hard to take notes if you fall asleep when you hear a monotone voice the whole lecture. Take him but know you have to cram!
SO BORING!!!!!! unless you are a history major, DONT TAKE HIM.
Very easy class if you come, take notes and study. Only 3 tests so study hard and learn everything and you will be good.
Had him for two classes. Lots of notes, but test came right from notes. Always had interesting stories on people in history. Got an A in both classes, but had to work for it. Nothing wrong with that as long as the proff is helpful, and he was.
I have taken him for every History class I could. He is an awesome teacher and a real asset to the dept. I would highly recommend him if you are interested in American History. He makes lots of funny comments, but you have to be on your toes to pick up on them. Take him if you love history!
He was so boring- i tried not to but i fell asleep in his class all the time! DO NOT TAKE HIM! he was the worst teacher i have ever had! he only had 3 tests and barely anyone passed, but how could they take in any information with him droaning on. He takes attendence and you can only miss 3 times!
Professor Watson is an old man. He is very nice in person, but if you aren't a history person, then this is not a good class to take. Its very boring, and the tests are super hard. But if u like history then go for it, just stay awake and take good notes and study!
This guy talks about history like it happened yesterday. He is very intresting and entertaining, if you go to class you'll do fine.
DONT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! He is sort of boring, but he puts an outline on the board. Most of the stuff you need to know is in the outline. WRITE DOWN AUTHORS. Sometimes he will say books and authors, and you need to know them. First test had like 5. dont get the book, i didnt even open mine, and made a B in the class.
This huy was so smart that he never even had to look at his notes. The epitomy of what a Southern professor should aspire to.
Prof. Watson is an amazing educator that really loves teaching. However, his zeal often overlooks the fact that his students are a sleep. Great class to take but its hard to not get board. he is very willing to work with you, and he is very thorough. P.S. DONT BUY THE BOOK, I only opened it once.
Dr. Watson's class was like a camp fire storytelling time.He made it so interesting. It was not boring and if you were bored you probably didn't get enough sleep the night before. Thank you Dr. Watson for your excellence in history.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! But you definantly do want to take this class! 1) There are no essays, tests are 100 multiple choice questions and 2)He gives an extra credit assignment that's worth 10 point on your FINAL GRADE! It's an awesome class, and you'll make an A if you study. If you don't study, then there's plenty of opportunity to do OK.
he is a very sweet old man...he speaks so eloquently that he almost sounds british or something...his class is extremely easy...no homework and he puts all the info for the tests right on the board. i agree though, don't buy the book, i dont think i've ever opened it. he's like someone you would want to be your grandpa.
He's really boring, but def knows his subject. The only grades for the class are 2 tests and the exam. I would NOT RECOMMEND this teacher because if you make a bad grade on a test, you're screwed.
Good man, better teacher, best historian. Completely from memory. Cannot tolerate classroom disruptions. NC patriot to the grave and has the most whimsical comments before starting his lecture. Very leniant with class time. Test easy...as long as you study!!!!!
good teacher. everything is from memory. only three tests in the semester, but the final is not cummulative, it's the last of the three tests. as long as you go to class and take notes you'll be fine. has good stories before class as well, and loves nc history. overall great guy!
Very good professor! His tests come straight from his lectures so if you study you will do fine. There is no need to buy the book either. He offers some extra credit which I would definitely recommend doing. Overall great class and I would definitely take one of his classes again.
dont even think about buying the book if you did already take it back, you dont need it, everything comes from his lectures if you can keep yourself awake during them, tests are very meticulous, so you have to go to class take the notes pay attention b/c not everything he says is on the board. tests can be hard i usually got 85-90's
He is a nice person, but is class is really hard! You have 2 tests and a 12 page paper...THAT'S IT! He gives NO study guide and there is so much material and so many names, it felt impossible to me. I wouldn't recommend taking this guy unless he starts having more tests or gives out a study guide. That class is way too hard.
I love Mr. Watson, he knows lots of cool, funny details about everything. I hate history and he made me almost wanna major in history. You have to go to class and just write everything down, take 2 exams, and thats it. He's so funny about noises, you can't bring drinks with ice in them to class
Has a very big problem with telling us way more than we need to know/not telling us small details that were actually on the test. Extra info is good if you have the time but this class is to detailed The class only has three test, dont need the book, and study like you have no other classes, most detailed tests ive taken
Didnt like him very much, he called people out on everything. His notes are hard to understand and his tests are wayyyy too specific. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, its 5 points on your final grade and could possibly save you. READ THE BOOK
The test come straight from the notes, but he makes them really difficult. If you really like history and understand it, you will be ok. If history is not your subject, get a different professor. I sturgled but some other people thought it was ok. You don't really need the book, he gives good notes for the test.
He's a decent teacher, you only have 3 tests in the semester..and they're kind of hard, but they ALL come stright from the notes and you don't really need the book at all.
If you like history, take the class. This guy knows more about American history than I thought was possible. Attendance isnt taken, but you need to o to get the notes. There are 2 tests and a final, all from the notes. Also, do the extra credit because the tests can be difficult if you dont study hard enough.
Dr. Watson really knows his stuff. It's strictly lecture. You don't have to attend, but you'll need to in order to take VERY DETAILED notes. It all comes from his memory. No textbook is used. The three tests come DIRECTLY from the notes. But, if you study for a few hours before, you should do fine. I made an A. I love him!
nice man, brilliant historian but expects you to be the same. everyday it is copying notes from the board and listening to him talk. no quizes, homework, worksheets or anything to exercise the material you are learning. Your whole grade is just 3 tests. Again, nice man, but verry hard class and you must read and study everynight to understand.
such a sweet man. always willing to answer questions after class. dont even buy the text book though because everything comes straight from his memory. attendance isnt mandatory but you literally cannot miss a class because of all the notes you take. tests arent bad just make sure you have your names down pat. our first tests was like 50% names.
he is the sweetest, smartest old guy ever.. teaches by telling stories, he's supposed to teach military and governmental history but includes a lot of social history which makes it more interesting.
Just took this class for fun and enjoyed sitting through each one listening to his stories! Great, sweet man who knows everything about US history and wants you to be just as passoinate as he is! Tests are straight from lectures so take detailed notes, but he really wants you to do well in class and will help if you ask!
I did not think it was possible for someone to know as much about American history as he does. He is passionate about history and he truly wants you to do well. 3 tests all year. 1 extra credit assignment. DO IT. No other assignments. He curves. Always starts class with random funny story. Taught at UNCW for 30 something years. Dont buy textbook.
He is a really nice guy and knows his stuff when it comes to American History. His class is strictly lecture so you really need to go to class so that you can take good detailed notes. Tests arnt easy but if attend every class and look over your notes you will do fine. You dont really need the text book.
Very smart man. Knows everything there is to know about history. Most people struggled in this class because you have to go to every single class since tests are completely lecture based. If you just study your notes and memorize them you can make an A easily if you put in the effort.
He starts class with interesting stories/connections. Class is entirely taught from his memory. The only grades are 3 tests (which he curves). If you go to class, take notes, and do a little bit of studying before the exam, you should get a good grade. He has an unusual rhythm to when speaking, which makes his lectures a little more interesting.
This man is pretty awesome. He really cares about the class and is an awesome teacher! You don't have to go t class...but the notes are the only thing the test is over. As long as you go to class you'll be fine. All in all a great teacher!
Never had a teacher bend over backwards more to help his students. Class can be a bit dry, but that's more up to who's listening rather than the professor. Never loses his temper. Always kicks off class with something witty or a funny story. Professors who really love their work are often the best, and he's an example of that.
i think history is kinda boring; so it was hard for me to pay attention. but he is so nice, and helpful. just go to class and take good notes. study hard for the test bc there is only 3. also there is extra credit that is 5 points on your overall grade, its alot of work but its worth it.
Very Difficult class, however he is EXTREMELY helpful and smart. DO. THE. EXTRA. CREDIT.
I had Mr. Watson for US History up to 1865. I think he is incredibly charming and he really makes the lecture interesting.I took notes on my laptop, basically documenting everything he says. The test are very hard, but don't let that deter you from taking this class!! He usually curves, doesn't give homework, and really makes the subject interesting
Professor Watson is such a sweet old man. I took this class to fill my University Studies, it does get quite boring because the class is 100% lecture with some notes on the board too. If you are prone to falling alseep in class I would not reccomend him. Tests are very detailed but take good notes and it is completely possible to make an A.
Great professor!! Come to class, take notes on his outline and you will do fine. NO PAPERS!!!! So def take him if your cool with just listening and leaving 15min early everyday!
I took Professor Watson for history up to 1865. He is the cutest old man. There are only 3 tests, not cumulative throughout the semester. He doesnt take attendance but I recommend going because his tests are based just from the notes. His tests are a little hard but he usually curves them. Definitely take this professor!
Very sweet old southern gentleman. He is an old school lecturer and Be careful not to fall asleep in class because he will stop class and quietly tell you to leave if you are going to sleep. Saw it happen. The tests are hard but if you study every night and go to every class you'll do alright. Di the extra credit and don't buy the text.
Very very nice older man. He is very interesting and knows his material extremely well. He just doesn't really like to have class discussions and shys away from questions. He's very old school but overall a decent experience.
Amazing professor! Go to class and take notes, and you'll do fine. Don't bother with the book. He's very interesting to listen to. Attendance isn't mandatory, but tests are based on lectures. He really knows his stuff, too.
Watson is arguably one of the best professors at UNCW. However, I see a lot of advise on here to not use the book which Watson assigns. This is very wrong. Anyone who actually read the assigned books (and articles) beyond the first three paragraphs would probably tell you that his lectures and his exams are nearly verbatim from the book.
He is a very nice guy. He will call you out if you talk during his class though. Attendance is not mandatory, but all this tests come from the lecture so you don't want to miss a class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!
He's alright. He's a very nice guy, but really boring. His tests were super heard, I went to every class and took notes and still barely got a C. I thought his class was pretty tough. He doesn't use power points or anything, his tests are just straight from his notes and he goes through the material so fast.
I found Dr. Watson to be a genuinely nice and "caring" professor. His classes are 99% lecture and that is where most of his test material comes from. You'll do well on test if you come to class and take good notes and read the assigned articles. I wish more professors were like Dr. Watson.
Four Tests make your final grade. He stands at podium and speaks entire class. Outlines given are where the questions for test come from. He is boring its hard to pay attention and pick out what is important. Record him (he doesn't want you to) but if you go back and listen, what's repeated, matches the outline and is on the test. Easy. Great man.
Professor is unclear. He loves his job, no doubt about it, however this is a class that if you have no interest in history and are only there for the pre-grad, you're going to suffer. He is not flexible with grading if you are behind, and gives no homework. You never really know what you're supposed to be learning vs. what he's just rambling about.
Dr Watson is absolutely adorable. He is a gentleman, and really helpful. He only lectures, so go to class and take good notes. If you really study you will do great, his tests are hard, but he will curve if the overall class needs it. Such a sweet man, I have a lot of respect for him!
worst class ever. expect 50 multiple choice and 50 fill in the blank on test. you would have to record him to be able to take notes because he rambles and you never know what exactly you need to know.
Do not take this professor if you are taking this class to fulfill university studies. Class is only based on lecture. Was absent due to an illness and wouldn't let me turn in the 10 page extra-credit assignment. Do NOT take this class if you want an easy A.
Professor Watson is a great man. Probably in his late 80s, very wise and caring. He talks the entire class and provides guided notes, however he gets off topic quite often. There are three tests, that's including the final. Everyone failed the first exam, the average was 48%, he rounded anyone below a 50% to a 70%. Difficult for a gen. ed course.
Dr. Watson is a very sweet mid 70's man. He does give long lectures, and he does tend to get off topic. But he does put some fun facts in his lectures as well. He does write on the blackboard. Great history professor!!!
He is absolutely adorable! Such a kind, sweet, and caring old man. His lectures are long but his obvious passion for history makes the lectures so much better. He only has 3 tests throughout the year, and one opportunity for extra credit. He added 10-15 points to every test grade that we had to help our average.
Watson is very old school and his tests are difficult, but if you study and attend class you should be golden. Just go to class EVERY DAY and take notes on the outline. He is honestly a brilliant man with a keen mind; very well-versed in his subject. If you don't particularly like history, avoid.
