gotta love the accent
No Comments
He's great, interesting and the accent doens't hinder him any!
Great Proff. He is Sherlock Holmes
Draws pictures on the board AND on my paper.
knows material, generally engaging, but can drag on a bit
bring your pillow and blanket
I am taking his Victorian Literature class (summer course). I don't think he likes teaching during the summer as he always arrives late and his midterm was open book and many did not people finish the exam.
He's interesting and funny. The accent makes him even sexier (for an old guy!) I like the open book concept for exams but don't think that'll get you off the hook...DO the readings!
Fair marker, a little dry, witty sense of humour. I would definitly like to have him again.
Summer course sleep sessions. Could a prof. be less enthusiastic?...blah...blah...blah. It would not have been that bad had he not kept looking at the clock. "I'd rather be somewhere else, too". Mary Arseneau is miles better.

The class is alright...I really don't agree with his marking though.
Relatively engaging, somewhat interesting, periodically entertaining. Great material to work with in Arthurian Tradition, so that was a plus. Takes (or took) regular attendance. Can get somewhat dry, but an overall good prof.
So...uhm...anyway...That is mostly what you'll hear come out of his mouth in class...but I can't blame him since the material is BORING...but yah, when he's talking about something other than poetry, he's really funny...Very clear marker!
I had him in ideology class and he was really fun, interactive and possessed good knowledge of the subject. I liked the lectures. Although there could be more interactions with the class. Overall, great prof!
Professor West is the best prof that i've ever had at the U of O. THE BEST.
very good Prof, attractive, witty, moderate difficulty level
Hilarious prof, but when he's not making jokes his lectures are unbelievably dry. Essays are marked relatively easily. One of those classes you don't have to go to in order to get a good mark.
He has a great sense of humour...appears to be helpful if needed. His marking was moderate and feedback helpful. I would take a class with him again!
I've never heard students being told to shutup so many times by one proff. He's bloody halarious as long as your not the annoying one being told to shutup.
Great teacher. He's very "friendly".
would have an affair with him anyday
Blahhh
amazing professor - too bad i am graduating .. would have been fun to have him again ...
Great Prof, sucks the class was video conference, would have loved to discuss more in class. If you read 6 out of 9 books in his class, you can easily have a B+. Hilarious too.
great!
Person that wrote that he "likes them young" forgot to mention that she likes 'em OLD. get over it. Awesome prof.
It's like listening on the Stream of Consciousness that he talks about. His lectures are infuriating b/c he s unable to make a point. Is always refering to the fact that he doesn't prepare ahead of time. It is a waste of time.
This guy is funny and approachable. Positive praise ends there. This guy doesn't prepare for class, give insightful lectures, or even really teach. He kind of coasts through each lecture and summarizes each text. If that's your thing, go for him, but otherwise (like if you wanna be taught something) AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
He's an awesome prof! Lectures can be slightly boring but that british accent keeps you up for 3 hours! He is very approachable, cares for his students, always there to help you out and he's more or less an easy marker. You must read the majority of the books however...he does test this on exams. If you have read the books you are bound to do well!
He has a dry sense of humour which makes discussing the books enjoyable. His exam was a take-home, which infers reasonability, but he makes you cite just about everything you write so it may's well be done in the gym and over with in over an hour instead of seven hours.
Oh dear West...does anyone else think he has got better looking in the last few years? Anyway, West is very interesting to listen to, very funny! Exam was great...took long...but straight forward!
Everything said on here is true, he doesn't prepare, lectures are more or less summaries, and he wants you to reference EVERYTHING on essays on takehomes, BUT if you're looking for an entertaining, relaxed, and easy class, this is definitely one to take. Prof is really nice, lectures are funny and entertaining. Good class.
What an amazing prof! He's so funny and laid back. He really gets you interested in the material. His lectures aren't all serious-he knows how to have FUN, which is rare in a prof. Definitly take his class.
I'm really not sure what everyone is on about, but I did not find this class even remotely interesting. I personally find, though the teacher is quite attractive, the summary-rather-than-analytical lecture style goes on forever. If I've just read the material, I don't want a three hour long summary, I want different insight into text.
He's a great guy. Lectures can be deadly (if I've read the novel, I don't particularly want to have the novel summarized), and he expects you to remember obscure stuff for the take-home final (one of the questions in my sci-fi exam was about a joke he made in class). And yeah, he does get better looking as the years go on.
Oh my god...HOT, HOT, HOT!! Compensation for the boring lectures...easy marker...and ... HOT, HOT, HOT!!!
WOW! THIS GUY IS QUITE BORING. CHILDREN'S LIT IS SUPPOSE TO BE FUN RIGHT? WELL WITH HIM, IT IS DREADFULLY BORING. NOT A VERY WARM PROF. TOO SERIOUS, HE NEEDS TO CHILL
Good to see a non-quota non-Francophone finally teaching. He's a decent professor, really really easy; you'd have to be incompetant or lazy not to get an A; I didn't read one of the books and got a mark in the 90's on the quiz. As with all courses: in class lecture notes are the key, you hardlyneed to read the books, but they are good; gpa boost.
I really enjoyed his lectures. His lectures where sitmulating. He's a great prof! Decent marker and always there if you need anything.
Great books, easy enough class.
Had Prof West for 2 courses and loved both of them. I enjoyed his dry humor and his perception of the material. The novels he chose were good and for the most part easy to read. The exams and papers were marked fairly.
the best prof!! i would highly recommend his courses! he's funny and makes class interesting.
Funny, but so disillusioned. He's got a great, dry humour, but I got the impression that he seems to think that students in general are snooty slackers.. Too bad. I would have loved to see him in his first years of teaching. Other than that, though, read the fun books and take notes. You'll do just fine.
Funny guy, though can be really dry and boring by the end of a three hour lecture. Go to class, because he highlights ALL the points that interest him that will show up on the exam. If you go to class and pay attention, there's no way you won't get a good mark. He is a slow marker, and we waited a long, long time to find out most of our marks.
too sarcastic for me.
Okay, Okay. All those who dread West are slackers. His choice of novels are okay, his marking is okay, as long as your there, you have to be there to do well because he loves to see that his notes are referenced in essays. His quizes are to make sure you read the material and if u did you'll get a good mark. I take his classes as electives.hes fine
I love him. I dream about him all the time. He is my prof idol. His classes are the best. there isn't an english prof better. Be there, write down notes and you'll do well.I wonder if he is available????:)
great teacher, interesting to listen to!
Prof West is totally hot and incredibly sexy, especially when he starts talking. Other than that, his classes are great, he makes them interesting and he is a funny funny man!!!!
Awesome prof !! wow !! very entertaining, i strongly recommend you take his classes, he's really good!
Personally I liked his dry humour. And i think if you actually pay attention to what he is saying, you'll notice that a lot of it isn't summary but does actually relate to something that you get tested on. I'd take another one with him anyday!
His classes were pretty interesting, I love his sarcastic humour. He downplays his jokes which makes him even funnier. Go to class because his quizzes are mostly based on lecture. You will deserve the mark you get. He can sometimes be a bit hard on commentary, but other than that he's a great prof!
Informative lectures - though a bit disorganised. Much of the grade was from quizzes and the exam - all of which relied almost solely on lecture material. Attendance and note-taking are vital in this course. Fair marker, great sense of humour. The greatest detraction was the disorganisation of his lectures, resulting in some wasted class time.
A very good prof in my book. His exams and quizzes arent sifficult if you've done the readings. So go to class, read your stuff and you'll get an A no problem.
Fantastic prof! His lectures are always interesting and the material is usually relevant. Exams are straight forward and he is a fair marker. I would definitely take one of his classes again. Gotta love the accent!
West made experience almost torturous. Although he adds a witty comment or two in his lectures, they mostly entail simply re-reading plot lines from the book (and other things we can understand simply by reading it). Obviously full of himself, marking is based on personal taste rather than academic material. Not helpful whatsoever.
Eh. Don't understand all the rave reviews about him. He's a very nice man, but his class was boring. Nothing but plot summary. I also find that his marking is ridiculously arbitrary. It doesn't matter how well-argued your point is. If he doesn't agree you won't get a good mark.
Probably one of the best Prof`s I have ever had, always having something interesting to say and ready to answer any questions students have with pleasure in doing so.
Tough class if you're looking for a breezy English course
I never liked english before this and now would consider taking his class all the time for school. Agree with his opinion and you will get a great mark, even if you don't agree with it actually. The mid term and exam were also extremely easy and he made you know what to study for an english exam which is very hard to do.
I also don't know why everyone here is raving about him. His lectures are long and boring and as previously stated he simply summarizes his class is completely pointless. He need to get with the times make a powerpoint or something. agreed with bring your pillow and blanket.....
I adore him. It's my fourth week of class and I find his lectures really interesting. It's a 3 hour lecture and he has me hooked the whole time. One of the better professors I have, to by honest. He knows what he's talking about. No, he doesn't use technology, but keeping up is so easy.
Class was easy if you paid attention and showed up. However, the grammar sections were tedious and there was way too much stuff to try and remember. However, when it came to essays there were none better or more helpful.
Be prepared to do a lot of laughing! great prof, really sarcastic with his humour, bit of a short temper, makes dry material funny somehow. Also, made himself available for extra help during his own free time (off office hours). Highly recommend.
Presents quizzes at the end of class to keep students present. Class consists of his drastically trivial recounting required texts for three hours. Computer illiterate, no online participation, no electronics whatsoever in class. Terribly banal exam/essay subjects. Little considerable effort in making class worth attending. Waste of time and money.
Forces you to stay 'til 8:30PM on a Friday by giving the quiz at the end of class. Spends three hours summarizing the stories you already read. Not the least bit interesting. Lacks depth. Shows up late, unprepared. Full of himself (ladies), but can't even look you in the eye! Made a simple class unbearable, for lack of a better word.
Very good prof. Knows material well, chooses good novels for courses. Explains material clearly and always available after hours for extra help if needed. Took 2 courses with this prof as the first one was so enjoyable!
He does tend to summarize the plot of the novels in class, which can be a bit of a bummer unless you don't do the readings. He doesn't really follow the schedule well because he takes his time. When you pay attention though, it's easy enough and he is a very funny guy. If you're looking for a more engaging class though, I would look elsewhere.
He is a great prof I have ever met. I am an international student and I gave me a lot of help.
I really enjoyed taking his class. Although he doesn't allow electronics (no laptops, so all notes are handwritten), I didn't mind. It does make you pay attention even when it gets to the boring stuff. He put all his lecture notes up on projector so you could just copy it, which was the same content used for quizzes and on the exam. Great prof!
Classes are excruciating: they consist of reading straight from the book and plot summary with constant mockery and lame humor. We are 6 weeks behind the syllabus schedule; he scrapped two of the books we had to buy ($$) and has started a 500 page book with one class left in the term. I had been really looking forward to this class. Avoid.
Gave us a list of 6 books to buy at the start of the course; we used three. Dinged me on my essay for using my own copy of SGGK. He's an easygoing guy and generally nice, but classes are just summaries of the text. At least he stopped taking attendance halfway through the year.
I had him for essay writing. I found the class pretty dry, but I think that was because it was a boring course, not that he was boring. I easily got a good mark, either because he or his TA was an easy marker. He was very clear and concise with many examples in class. He has a British accent :)
Awesome Prof. Electronics allowed, took attendance at first but then didn't care. Chose interesting books that were quick reads. If you just read the books you'll easily pass because his quiz's are basically content. Essays were simple because he gave a lot of options. Overall, interesting prof, easy to follow and great course
I really recommend this professor! He is very clear on his expectations regarding midterms, essays and the final exam. Take any english class with him if you can!
Lectures are long and very boring He is a good Prof, but he just teaches a really boring class He doesn't do a very good job of trying to make it any better
Solid Prof, but if your looking for an easy A over learning then you came to the wrong place
If you're taking Children's lit as a bird course, this is not the prof for you. Especially if you have a background in science. I needed an english credit for my grad studies, and he marks his essay HARD. Highly do not recommend for someone looking for an easy english course.
He's meh. His lectures are decent, but he's not an easy marker. He also is not much help outside of class.
Very boring lectures. Most of the time it's him reading from the textbook. He rambles on and does not do a very good job in engaging his class.
One of the worst profs I have ever had. Very rude and not helpful at all. Just reads from the book and focuses on useless parts of books. Would not recommend.
He's a tough grader. He also assigns readings and then just summarizes them the next class, so it can be boring. The good news is that the stories he chose for us to read were really interesting.
Loved him! He was very helpful and toke time to review my essay with me. The books were very interesting as well!
Overall, he's a good professor. However, his lectures do get quite dry and boring. He has a very odd sense of humor, and sometimes his humor is 18+.
Awesome Prof. Always there when you need a hand with reviewing work prior to the due date. Very approachable and has a good sense of humour.
Prof. West is a very nice man with an odd sense of humour. It is mandatory to attend classes, 4 absences and you fail. He almost always takes attendance. Don't talk or use your phone/laptop during lectures, makes him angry. Very easy to pass this class but it's boring! I was lucky to have an amazing TA, the DGDs with her were more interesting.
Professor Alan West is good. His class is pretty boring and dry, but he is humorous. All of the assignments were fair and easy to do well on. He provides useful feedback on all assignments. No cellphones are laptops allowed but they are not really needed for the course with him. He is not the best, but not the worst either. A good guy for sure.
excellent professor. took a couple courses as electives. would definitely take courses again.
One of the worst English classes I've ever taken. The professor is extremely boring and just fills space in his lectures talking about random things. If you don't agree with his opinion then just drop the class. Don't recommend him whatsoever. There's also a quiz every week on grammar.
If you need help you have to go and get it, reads off his lecture from Microsoft word. You have grammar quizzes it may seem easy but he's a hard marker. Doesn't really help you improve your essay writing skills. As soon as you're done the grammar quizzes he'll give article readings and quiz you on them. Doesn't prepare you very well for final exam
worst prof i've had yet. he is super boring and gives quizes every week. if you have an opinion dont give it because he will say your wrong. hates cell phones and will personally call you out. avoid this class if possible!!
Very rude, not helpful. Doesn't allow cellphone and will call you out in front of everyone if you get caught using one. If you don't attend almost all the classes he says he will fail you. quizzes every week. All in all would suggest you avoid him at all costs.
He's a good professor. I don't like English as a course but He made me hate it less. If you HAVE to take English, take it with him. You'll learn a lot and you'll get better at essay writing.
Not only is he rude and condescending, but his lectures are irrelevant to course material. Lectures are mandatory, however, yet my time would have been better spent literally doing anything else.
Can be really boring, but has the occasional funny moment. The textbook for this class was useless. Very unclear & will send emails of what you need to do for next class as late as the night before instead of telling you in the previous lecture. The TA is really nice & helpful though. Avoid him if you can. If not, it's not the end of the world.
Overall, an extremely boring class and he did mandatory participation marks so you had to show up even though your time could be spent more efficiently doing anything else. Don't dare to look or touch your phone or he will call you out to explain. Never touched the textbook until exam day so it was kinda useless. Weekly quizzes also.
ENG1100 is mandatory for many and has the potential to be useful but Prof West uses most of the in-class time on useless material. As a result, the class doesn't pay attention so he will call someone out if he catches them off guard. Overall very boring and useless. Anything i learned about writing university papers was on my own time. AVOID
Do you feel like going back to grade 3, but are looking for the nightmarish qualities of a wasteful university class? This prof is for you. Here you will learn about nouns, verbs and other BASIC GRAMMAR during non-engaging lectures, then be quizzed on it. Textbook never used, painful attempts at 'humour' (offensive at times), is rude and carless.
Complete waste of time. In this class, prof. Allen will scroll through a word document, read to you, never answer your questions, put in tidbits of useless facts, and overall just waste your time. Learning basic grammar and sentence structure is not my idea of a university course that I'm paying for. Textbook was never used during the class.
considering english class is a mandatory class Prof. West makes it as enjoyable as possible, his lectures are just him reading from a word doc that he will send to you afterward but he tries his best to make it better, you must attend class or you will not be allowed to take the final exam, never once used the textbook, no cell phones, weekly quizs
At first West seemed very nice and approachable. As the semester went on, it seemed like he was trying to impress the students by making rude jokes and calling people out. His grammar quizzes are hard for anyone who isn't an English expert and are way harder than they should be for an introductory class. However, he can be approachable and kind.
For such a boring class, he made it pretty interesting. He's funny and tells stories that can be off topic but brings a fun energy to the class. I would recommend him as a prof.
Makes a lot of rude comments/jokes and will call out and yell at students who are on their phones or who he sees as "not paying attention'. Never used the textbook once. He made his lectures drag on much longer than necessary, since he just reads off a word document. I didn't feel comfortable asking questions or sharing my opinion. Not the best.
His jokes and sarcasm make up for how he reads directly off the slides and tends to drag things out a little when they could be said much quicker. Low stress class and you can tell that even though he does just read from the slides he actually does want to connect with the students and wants them to succeed.
Really funny and easy-going; down to earth. Doesn't take the class too seriously and workload is undemanding. Definitely a GPA booster!
Takes attendance, won't admit you to the exam if you have missed more than 4 lectures/dgd's. Lectures will literally make you fall asleep, however, he's a nice enough guy who does his best to be funny and keep his students entertained. Quizzes are very difficult and deduct marks on essays etc. for the silliest things.
I mistook Mr. West to be just another boring teacher. The truth is he is the best I could have asked for. He is so accommodating and kind. When I was stuck and needed help, he went out of his way to accomadate and help me even though I didn't go to lectures and never spoke with him. I'll never forget that. I reccomend everyone take his class!
Prof was really good and his lectures were interesting. also marks fairly on midterm and exam. he expects more from essays tho so i had to put in a lot more work on those. if you're like me and your major isn't english, you can still do well if you go to every class and pay attention. he loves watership down, so make sure you read that one
He never let us have discussions on what we were reading, which is essential for an English class. Went off on tangents a lot, and does not let you use a computer. He also kept talking during the exam which was very distracting. In addition, his essay questions were very specific and his exam did not match the format we were given.
In the childrens lit course there are 6 books to read which is a lot but he goes over all the content thats ill be in each quiz and what he expects on each essay in class so its not that difficult in the end
His lecture style is bad, he pauses in the middle of sentences so you aren't sure if he ended his thought or not. He always has a cough and would cough right into his hand. He would pace across the front of the room while lecturing which I found distracting. There were frequent quizzes which was annoying. Would absolutely not recommend this prof.
It was six books with a 7-10 question quiz after each, 2 essays and a final exam. He is really not out to trick you and will give you marks if you read the books and try on the assignments. He also posts all lectures on brightspace. I found his humour really funny, but that was my perspective. hes a good prof. I would recommend for sure
Lacks good communication with his students. Paces around and unclear sentences/lectures. I would recommend switching to another class if you get him. Hated the experience.
This professor is extremely unprofessional. He will mark very hard and if he doesnt agree with what you have to say in a paper/essay be prepared to be belittled and made to feel stupid. He is unclear about expectations and says things like Its up to you to determine the length of a paragraph. but then will get mad if your paragraph is too long.
Be prepared to have your essay cut up and to feel like you can't write. The only reason I popped of an A- was because I fought for it (emailed and asked what these marks were taken off, and why etc..). He will call you out in the middle of class for talking and make you feel stupid. He also loves English majors. Kinda rude too, just switch out.
Told me I could write well which felt great as a social science student. Only to rip up everything I give him! I go to him asking him to clarify feedback and results in vague and disappointing responses. Boring lectures and intense criticism that makes or breaks your mark.
Gives effective feedback but there is a significant work load. Better prof than most and workload is lighter than most
Liked him as a person but not as a prof. His lectures didn't really explain or elaborate on the notes and he was a really hard marker.
Lectures are interesting, he often goes off track. Super nice teacher, the work is super easy. Had a weekly quiz, article critique and a essay to write. We had a month to write the 2000 word essay so it wasn't bad at all. Didn't go to class often and I passed the quizzes easily. Would definitely recommend this class.
Nicest teacher at UO! his class is really easy and stress free.
Honestly, Prof West was great. During the pandemic, he was super understanding and was always available for online office hours. To succeed, submit things on time, and ask for feedback on your final essay before you submit. There was only one essay and 5 quizzes + an easy final exam. He's great! But always start emails with "Dear Professor West"
Prof West is such a nice guy, he always tries to make lectures as interesting as possible by telling little stories here and there. His notes are a bit hard to follow because they're in a pages document instead of ppt so there's no subtitles or anything, but other than that he's a great prof
Professor West's class was honestly just a breeze. Although I didn't attend every class, his storytelling, sense of humor, and accent were all things that made the class more enjoyable. He does have weekly quizzes that aren't very hard, mostly things you've already seen in High School. He also provides good feedback when marking.
I do not like english but I loved this class. great prof!!!
worst ENG teacher I have ever seen, he always tries his best to disrespect you in feedback
He is a tough grader and his feedback is not clear by any means, and that is if he decides to give you feedback in the first place. Other than that, the quizzes are easy, it's the papers you have to watch out for. He is a good person though!
decent prof but so many quizs to do all the time. lots of pop up assignments so its important to be active in the classes so you can know what to do when.
His feedback is the vaguest thing ever, it's like trying to solve a riddle. Luckily I think he liked me so my grade is fine but I can totally see how he arbitrarily destroys people's grades. Not to mention he is the worst lecturer I've ever seen. Long, incoherent rambling. I would fall asleep in his class nearly every time. I would avoid his class.
DO NOT PURCHASE THE TEXTBOOK FOR THIS COURSE. You only use it twice. Professor West is an OK prof. He is really passionate about teaching, but he tends to ramble about things that have nothing to do with the course. He is also a tough grader and gives vague feedback. There is also a clear favoritism of students. Very respectful though.
prof is kind of rude. he says you need the textbook, but you really don't. lectures aren't engaging and the material is just a collection of things taught in english class from grades 1-12.
very unprofessional. shows up late or leave in the middle of class to get coffee. the discussion groups were completely useless other than quizzes at the very end that would count towards your grade so you still had to go. rambles about unrelated topics to try and pass time to get to the end of the class. unfair and inconsistent marking.
Probably one of the easiest profs I've ever had. He's pretty chill and funny sometimes but he tends to ramble. I rarely went to class and mostly only showed up to the discussion groups for the quizzes and still did fine. Overall a fun prof and generally really easy class as long as you do the assignments and show up for the quizzes.
