He tries hard, you gotta give him that. Still trying to get into the swing of things, teaching-wise, although he's a smart enough guy. His "proofs" are unclear, at best, and just plain wrong at worst (e.g. proof by picture). Likes proof by picture a lot. If you're not taking honours math, he would be fun to have, but as it stands, not that great.
The course expects more ability in proof than it should. This prof was nice ... we got candy near Halloween, but very difficult to understand in lectures or in office hours, and the textbook a nightmare for those who are learning Analysis. To avoid half-killing yourself, learn the course before you take this course.
lol hes not a good prof.
Prof Chau is a decent prof. Sometimes his lectures are difficult to follow, but he is very willing to clarify any questions raised in class. He is truly helpful if a concept has eluded you. He does use odd terminology at times.. 'moral' 'eyeballable'
He is very all over the place, skips many steps because he feels they are not necessary to show yet many students do not understand where he got his numbers from, when asked he will respond "well, intuitively we know..", hard to follow along, he does dress very well though
Lectures are good, every things makes sense when he explains them. Sometimes wish he would not hold up the class by answering so many questions though.
Helpful teacher but god his tests are much harder than practice tests and it's basically impossible to understand him in class.
brutal teacher, gives you practice questions and exams that are irrelevant to the test he will give you, claims everything is easy and can be done 'intuitively', moves far too quickly and does not finish examples because he assumes we know where to go from there (most don't), you will definitely need a tutor for this class
Morally speaking, his class was alright.
Prof Chau is friendly, and he's willing to help if you are there to ask for it. His lectures are really confusing for a student who has never taken calculus and often takes more difficult methods to explain simple things. His exams are difficult if you've never taken calculus but his marking scheme is quite lenient so you end up with a decent mark.
He was a really bad teacher at the beginning of the year but after we gave him feedback he did a 360 degree change, he finishes his examples and checks that the class understands, he also prepares you alot more for midterms than at first, definitely a big improvement now the class isn't so bad
he's a very nice guy but he really cant teach...
What I've always liked about math is that it can be applied to so many different things at once. I wish the proff would illustrate that more by describing things in simpler terms and focus less on theory, which can be difficult for someone who has no calculus background.
Nice but cant teach at all.
Really helpful guy. I hope to have him again sometime in the future.
He's really smart and knowledgeable. Before we gave feedbacks, i actually disliked his class very much. However, later on he changed a lot and started to give really challenging questions that sometimes i regret to have suggested him to give us challenging prolems because i can't solve the questions given. Generally, he's an awesome prof!
I'm really grateful to Chau, he's not that great at explaining things since our problems are his "common sense", but he puts a lot of effort into helping his students. Put his own time into making up harder questions and writing out all solutions for us to learn from instead of assigning textbook q's; saved me from failing the midterm and final.
dont take him if u still want to take math 105...or unless you're super good at math that u dont even need anyone to teach u...super hard midterm and homeworks...
Albert's a good prof - he explained things clearly in lecture, gave detailed notes, and was very willing to answer questions during office hours. Also, he was willing to take the time to design exam-style problems for our homework so we'd be better prepared for his midterms and the final. Overall, I'd recommend him.
hard to understand and just assumes you know the material
Albert was fairly clear. Was enthusiastic and encouraging. Math is definitely a course you have to put the time into practicing and no teacher can make you do that. I found going to drop in tutors and math helps the most useful to get through the course. Albert taught the course well given it is first year calc, but he would skip some algebra steps

Dresses well, quite good looking haha. Almost failed this course.. Found extremely hard despite hours spent studying. As soon as you're struggling, ASK FOR HELP! He is willing to help out any way he can. Like others said, horrible in the beginning but after survey, he completely changed. Final was brutal, midterms were OK.. ASK FOR HELP!
tries his best to explain material (sum of it u just have to put the effort in n really learn it urself), total stud, dresses to impress, says some funny things sometimes, gives u alot of part marks on exams even if u clearly dont really kno what ur doing just put something down n u'll get sum marks, office hours are good, always willing 2 help u
Morally speaking, Chau was very difficult to follow along his lectures unless you know the chapters well because he tends to skip a lot of steps, claiming the answers are "eyeballable". Kinda funny from time to time. Dresses very well! Nice guy though, he tried hard.
Have to agree with the two posts below. He tends to have harder first midterms, which he scales and gives a much easier second midterm. He gave us an outline of what to expect for the second midterm and if you do his homework, the questions are relatively similar. Defintely an easier marker compared to other classes where TAs do it.
Nice enough, whatever, but really CANNOT TEACH. He does things in a much more complicated way than it needs to be. Ex. he solves a question i'm also able to solve, but i had noo idea what he was doing. OMG its only the start of the year and it sucks to know that your teacher cant teach for CRAP
Fun teacher, very nice and easy to approach. Has an interesting sense of humor. Unfortunately, does not explain concepts well and lectures are extremely boring and useless. Midterms and finals were awful but I don't think it's his fault since all other math sections take similar exams. Passed the course because I had a math tutor all term long.
Knowledgeable, approachable with a bit of a sense of humour. He will teach you the required material. He is not an easy teacher though -- lectures and examples are sometimes convoluted, or he may skip steps, but just ask questions if you're confused, Albert is one professor who WILL answer them. Math 104/184 is not easy, but that is course-wide.
Hard course, midterms weren't that bad and were a real grade booster. Do the HW, get lots of help from prof/TAs. He is approachable though, and when my midterm was marked wrong he did make sure to take a look at it and fix it. NICE GUY! FUNNY! LECTURES SOMETIMES HARD TO FOLLOW, BUT NOT BAD! DO PRACTICE QUESTIONS!
A really nice and funny guy (although some of his jokes are painfully bad). Sometimes he's not really too clear and expects you to know what he's doing and might lead to confusion. However, if you got a question, he'll answer it whether it's after class or in his office. Overall he's a really cool guy.
Morally speaking, Albert Chau probably isn't the world's best lecturer; he's nice, and at times, quite funny, but he gets very flustered and uses odd metaphorical and philosophical terms to describe math. However, he's a very fair professor, is always happy to help, and the exams are almost exactly what you'd expect. No complaints from me.
Chau is very funny and if that why you want to go to class then you probably have some good laughs. Either at his jokes or hoe bad they are. However in his lectures he is very difficult to understand in terms of the methods he uses to describe concepts. Help can be accessed but attending lectures is difficult when explanations are insufficient
thought his midterms were pretty easy compared to other profs. I would really recommend him if you already took calculus from high school. Just loved the class and the prof as well
Nice guy, sometimes funny. Pretty approachable and willing to answer questions and help students. Chau's midterms were relatively easy compared to other 104 profs. Final was ridiculously long and pretty difficult though.
Funny guy! Definitely recommend taking his class and actually showing up! His examples were really helpful and his midterms were pretty easy. Weekly homework assignments were always really short (2-3 questions).
I enjoyed Albert Chau's class a lot, despite what most people say. He does skip over finishing the questions sometimes, but he's usually really funny. His midterms were very fair, and the final extremely hard, although he doesn't write the final. If you can get him as a teacher, do it.
Despite the bad ratings, Albert was actually a very good teacher. He was only unclear at certain points, but one could always ask and he would clarify. Provided decent notes (the problem was we had to copy what he wrote on the overhead). Funny guy, very approachable, and helpful. Easy midterms, but the final (same for all sections) was very hard.
Chau was a pretty easy prof, his notes we're really simple and easy (not really a good thing imo) but his midterms were easy/fair, and final extremely hard since he didn't write them, homework were tedious. I'll give Chau 75%, wish that his notes examples were harder to prepared us better for that hard final.
I hate math so much but Albert made it bearable. Must go to class - does notes by hand on overhead projector and doesn't use vista. Hilarious guy, explains concepts in a straightforward way. Do practice questions in text!!! Also try and work together for Webwork! MT was fair, similar to problems in tutorial. Exam was kind of hard. Do all webwork!!
Chau was not a bad prof but not a great one either. He was organized and had a set plan for each lesson but could be a bit unclear in his explanations. Also not a particularly engaging prof and could seem a bit intimidating at times.
Personally I LOVED prof.Chau but I HATED the course. If you took high school calculus, you might think you're golden.. This course was a pain in the butt. Final exam was too hard which dragged down my mark by around 8%.. Do suggested homework and all the webwork questions and make sure you understand them, that'll guarantee you at least a B.
He's a very funny and nice prof. He does skips steps when he writing his examples; however, if you ask him in class he will explain it clearly to you. He can really bring the stress level down when he knows his students are stress. Eg) before midterms he would joke around Or during class when we have time he would make small talk :)
Hilarious professor. Cares about the student's learning, and his passion for math is evident. His notes are pretty good but he sometimes makes a few mistakes ( I guess talking and writing at the same time is challenging). He is very open to students seeking help. He also sends emails and reminders to students which is nice.
He is a nice teacher but he does not know how to teach. Can cause lots of confusions during the classes. Always make mistakes, which makes him cute but not a very good professor.
Albert is one stud of a math prof. His punctuality is legendary. Out of 3 exams (2 midterms and a final), the pattern was hard-as-balls, piece of cake, holy-cow-why-was-that-so-frickin-hard. Musta been one hell of a curve for me to have ended up doing well in that class. All well worth it for his quirky Oxford sense of humor.
Absolutely terrible prof. His practice midterms are nothing like the actual midterms and he is such a harsh marker. He also doesn't bother to finish questions in class so you have to read the textbook to figure out what is even happening in that class. AVOID THIS PROF.
Albert Chau makes a great prof. Eloquent and fluent, Albert Chau is an effective communicator and a stud. He takes on any questions you have and he answers them well. He does that thing where he doesn't complete examples, but I'm sure if you asked him he would complete them for you. Like he doesn't finish an integral, somtimes. Funny guy, too.
Albert Chau is a contender for my favourite prof at UBC. His charm and knowledge entranced me during lectures. If something is unclear to anyone he is ready with an informed and concise explanation. He knows most people in his section by name and is able to recognise people who are standing in. Felt like a small classroom again. I love the Chau
Open and helpful to students seeking help. He is able to explain the concepts really well in class ; he will not give you a recipe for problems and solve out every example; his midterms epitomises his conceptual nature/focus where you have to listen to his lectures and think beyond it to do well; his tests are not technical heavy .
His midterms are challenging! However, scaling is expected so it's not too bad. The final was much easier than his midterms. He gives clear and concise notes, but does not post them online so attending lecture is a must. The examples he gives in class is textbook questions or previous final questions, which I found helpful. Great prof!
Lectures are completely useless, goes way to fast, while he's attempting to visualize quadric surfaces with a sharpie and his fingers half the class is still trying to decipher his writing from the last slide. Self study is required if you want to pass the class.
Speeds through his lectures and leaves a lot of examples blank or without full solutions, expects you to visualize a plane, quadratic surface, and a line all intersecting some how using his sharpie, a piece of paper and your imagination as half his class is still frantically trying to decipher what he wrote down. QUIZZES AND MIDTERMS ARE BRUTAL
Mr. Albert Chau is one of the best professors that I met this year, he is so nice and friendly. His note is pretty clear and makes the class easier and interesting. I promise if you attend his class and follow his step, you can learn a lot of things and find Math 200 is not hard. And I recommand his office hour. Really thanks for his help.
He's a really great prof & you can tell that he cares about your learning. His explanations and lectures are really helpful, even though they may be a bit abstract at times (he likes to visualize things with his hands). Also, the man's JACKED.
Albert has been my favorite prof in all my time at UBC. He's brilliant, knows the subject inside and out, and gives clear lectures. He is very approachable and helpful in office hours. The midterm was very hard, but he scales it appropriately. This course will be a challenge, but it is worth it.
Albert is very caring and overall a good prof, however, MATH 200 uses 4 in-class tests instead of 1/2 midterms and the tests are completely dependent on your prof. Albert's tests were a bit on the harder side compared to other profs but the final exam was fair. If you want an easier time and a higher grade, choose another prof with easier tests.
He isn't great at explaining , but not a bad prof. His 4 in class tests are 20ish min but 3-4 pg long. Absolutely killer. Hard keeping your tears back while collected. I cried every class or right after. My very first class at uni :)) Looking back, content wasn't too bad- pace was too fast. Expect crazy amounts of scaling. His handwriting tho..
Doesn't give enought time for midterms. Very unprepared for lectures. Poor explanations of the material and the reasoning behind the concepts being learned. It's like his brain works differently. Honestly better off just learning from the textbook. People need to stop laughing at his jokes so he can realize how bad he is.
Very poorly prepared for classes as well as very unclear in explanations. Pacing was way too fast, even had to take a break from an assignment since we were ahead of the other Profs' sections. Not ahead in a good way, just rushing. Be prepared for insane scaling and a lot of struggling with his handwriting and the material. Lots of solo studying.
While he can crack a few jokes, Professor Chau's teaching methods do not provide the same level of joy. One would learn more material studying out of a free calc 3 textbook than in this class.
Unclear explanation of material, insanely difficult concept based tests and worst of all, his sample tests solutions do not include full solutions as they are all lazy written. Better off registering for a different prof for this course as multivariable calc needs a good teacher in order to grasp the concept better.
Midterms are insanely difficult compared to the problems problems and webworks assigned, they are not representative of what we are learning at all; its simply mindless algebra that do not give us a chance to show our knowledge. It's almost as if he's trying to fail all of us.. Oh, and not to mention the massive discrepancy between sections.
Do not take this prof. I wish I could give a 0/5 to be honest. He is super lazy, doesn't give clear examples in class. Even when giving solutions to his practice exams he gives incomplete answers and sometimes answers the wrong stuff. I loved Calculus 1 and 2. Albert has made me absolutely hate Calc 3. Avoid at all costs!
Gives you 30 mins to write a 1 hr long midterm
Nice professor but a challenging class. Practice test solutions are incomplete and you're given a very short amount of time to write midterms. He tends to go very quickly in class as well. If you're looking for a slow, clear progression into calc 3, this is NOT the prof for you.
A lot of people criticize Albert here but I think the main problem stems from the course rather than the prof. MATH200 is truly a step up from Calc 1 & 2. On top of that, the 30-minute time limit for the in-class tests are absolutely brutal. Looking past the course, Albert makes very engaging lectures and is very helpful outside of class.
Though heavily criticized, I believe that the struggle really stems from the content that MATH 200 entails rather than the prof itself. Albert has been a great lecturer and provides a good overview of the content but it is math, you gotta study outside of lectures, that's a given. Midterms are tough but overall that's just how math rolls
Lectures are useful but get ready to scrounge up your own practice. Do the webworks manually or die. He is incredibly vague about what is covered on exams
Nothing to complain! material was easy and he made it fun! Thanks alot
Thanks for the free credit on test 3
Homework is hard, which usually involves complex analysis and topology. You will need a deep understanding in the intrinsic property of differential geometry and a solid background in analysis to success. Professor Chau is awsome, he gives fun and informative lectures and detailed feedback. He is also very kind. The course is very rewarding overall
He is the best professor I've ever met!!! He can build your math thinking not just teach you how to solve the problem. His explanation is super clever and thorough! He has his own way of understanding difficult math definitions. I like him. I will continue his 317 next semester. He is such a smart and wisdom math professor!
Good lectures. More engaging to me than the profs I had for 100 and 101. Found myself enjoying a math course, and the midterms were pretty chill, as far as they go.
Morally speaking, success in math 200 has nothing to do with your professor and everything to do with how much time you spend on it outside of class. Midterms were standardized across all sections. No scale. Chau is without a doubt an excellent mathematician but often does not understand that we students are not. Just grind CLP3 and you'll be ok
Albert was an ok professor. I found him rude over email, but that could just have been me. Math 200 is not for the faint of heart (aka me), but I survived and so will you. The course depends on how well the professor can explain concepts. Albert was just not that prof, which is okay since I went to Colin's lectures instead!
His lectures were focused on theory and proofs for concepts we apply in webworks. I would have preferred that he worked through more examples. He also skips intermediate steps while working through examples. He clarifies if you ask about it though. I found his explanations hard to follow but it could just be that 3D geometry is not my thing.
Always i can't follows him on the lecture and his note is messy and hard to read. So I just learn from another section in math200. But unfortunately he is the only section in math317, so i have to take his course again. Hope he can change his teaching method a little bit like showing more examples and improve the writing.
Not a prof for students who cannot visualize 3-dimensionally. Lectures were so hard to follow at times with him just waving his hands around to talk about surfaces. While it may work for some, it did not work for me. Thanks for being so confusing that I have a cute little W on my transcript :)
honestly so messy, I already knew I was so done for as soon as I step into the FIRST 8:00am lecture and there isn't a single comprehensible thing on his work. Please don't take this prof.
If you can avoid. Typical professor who can't articulate ideas in a meaningful way. He focuses on proofs and thinks the class can understand based off those concepts. Just use Professor Leonard on youtube for any of you calc classes. Good luck reading his notes during lecture. If your reading this Chau, watch how Leonard teaches.
His lecture is boring and very hard to understand. There is no ppt or anything prepared for the lecture, be ready to learn all the knowledge by yourself. Therefore, the exam is super difficult.
Albert is actually a terrible prof, his lectures are hard to understand and there's a reason no one goes to his lectures. It's because he can't teach his way out of a paper bag, and then he has the audacity to get butthurt when his students attend other sections because the other profs are better. Never take this sorry excuse for a professor!!! ☺️
Not only he teaches without drawing readable graphs and notes, our section MT1 avg is 59% whereas the other two are 79% and 80%. MT2 is 62% but other two are 88% and 75%. 8am lecture without recording with less than 50 students showing up out of 325, which is INSANE! Uses notes_summary written by himself over the summer that has typo everywhere.
He doesn't know how to teach.... seems to lose interest in teaching the course after doing so for so many years... Hard avoid! Go and watch other professor's recording instead!
Stay away if you like ur gpa
His teaching style was poorly suited for teaching math
Hard midterms, and limited time(55 mins). He probably assume students has same math skill level as Gauss or Euler.
I feel bad for him with all the negative comments hes getting :(
He's really good. People that don't like him are nobody comp sci students who don't actually take the time to sit in a lecture and think they're better than everyone else.
I don't get where all the hate comes from, if people actually take the time to do the clp his tests are pretty reasonable. Surely you will have to self-study but that's an essential skill in uni, you can't just rely on the instructor for everything. He is a pretty fair prof.
Great prof!
Thanks for the W on my transcript. He would be a good prof for people who can visualize the 3D spaces in their heads. For those who cannot, you're cooked.
