Great professor. There for you. Class discussions are the norm and very helpful.
We love Al! He's super friendly and a lenient grader. Take him for 1101 if you need it because you'll be sure to pass with an A or B if you just do the work. Attendance is mandatory but he gives extra credit if everyone comes to class.
this class was one of my favorites. for the first half of the semester, we read short stories and poems and just had class discussions all the time. then the second half we watched movies that dealt with technology and humanity (e.g. Her and Wall-e). He really wanted you to think about the subject- and the papers had really cool subjects
Al is a very easy-going, fun professor who genuinely wanted his students to get a better understanding that literature is what you make it. His papers got progressively narrow in topics and he graded each one harder than the previous; however, I would recommend Al vs. some of the stories I've heard from other 1102 students.
Great teacher and will help with any English paper
Definitely felt like he actually cared about writing and making sure his students were improving rather than simply grading. I will say, grades were composed of just the papers and portfolio so do them all well.
Professor Dixon is absolutely the best english teacher I have ever had. He is very enthusiastic about making sure everyone finds something passionate to write about wants to help everyone. He does not like people to be bland though, he rewards creativity and so long as you put in the work he will try his best to help get your papers to an "A"
He had great reviews and I was extrmely excited to take his class. I have been throughly dissapointed. He expects you to have life changing thesises that no one has even considered before. He provides little to no help when editing your paper and often just asks "So what?".
I am very disappointed with this class. Tough grader- excepts too much for non english majors.
You do have to put time into your papers, and it helps if you are a good writer. He challenges you to actually improve your writing, so not something to coast through. Assignments are mostly fun, although some are a bit dull, but the final assignment focuses on Technology and you get to watch movies. Hardship, but worth it.
Not easy not hard very average. He was super nice and guided you through ever paper.
A good 1102 professor. The paper topics are all very interesting (you watch movies for the last paper), but he has high expectations. It really helps to be a good writer- dont slack on grammar mistakes. Doesnt assign much work outside of paper planning. There could be much worse professors in English, so take him!
He is not a mean guy at all, however he does expect a lot from students even if they aren't English majors. He can be very unclear with feedback but is available to help you as much as he can. Wouldn't take again because solely because his expectations are hard to fulfill.
He is very unclear about his expectations. He grades for different unknown things on each paper. On the third paper, he failed about half the class, and only one person got an A on that paper.
Dixon is the kind of professor that you cant really complain about but also cant really praise. Hes fair with his grading, although maybe a bit harsh. He will explain assignments to you if you ask. His lecturers are informational and helpful. He gives random bonus points all the time, so look out for those. Id recommend him.
This man !! I spent hours working on and perfecting my essays, paid trips to the writing center to get feedback, AND had my papers peer edited and he STILL gave my failing or close to failing grades. ALSO, after meeting with him one-on-one, he gave me opportunities to rewrite my papers only to give the revised essay THE SAME grade as the original.
I thought he was great! Didnt require a textbook, very chill and accessible, interesting assignments. He does have high expectations, but as long as you put effort and creativity into your papers , As are definitely achievable. Not that much homework either.
Albert grades pretty hard, but gives a lot of extra credit points. If you put in effort he notices and will boost your grade. If you do poorly on a paper he might let you revise it for some extra credit. Really cares about his students and is a sweet prof. Definitely take him.
Hated English in high school, but Al has given me a totally different perspective when analyzing literature. The in class discussions are really insightful and the thought process he has when leading these discussions has really helped develop my papers. He's a charismatic guy who really enjoys teaching and he gives lots of bonus points too!
Very fun class and makes writing more enjoyable
Prof. Dixon is awesome. Love the man. He is a solid choice for english and pushes you regardless of your skill level. I came in being a great writer and left being excellent. Prof. Dixon always found something i could improve on and pushed me to do so.
Al is very subjective when he grades his papers. Pay close attention to what he likes and hates during his class examples. He expects a lot from an 1101 class, but he will make time outside of class if you really need it. Overall, I spent way too much time making these papers the way he likes them than one should for 1101.
Al is a straight up pr!ck. He grades his papers based on his view and what he likes. He makes up dumb reasons for giving you a low grade. He choses controversial topics and wants you to write in favor of his views. He is nit picky and a terrible teacher. I went to him for help and he never gave clear feedback on how to help me change my paper
My favorite. Class was actually interesting. He made me like writing. You don't have to use big fancy words. He prefers you write how you talk. We only had two papers to write. Both fun and actually interesting. I was expecting a lot of reading and writing in class essays. Not at all. He'll give you like 6 weeks to write a paper and his HW helps.
He is a nice guy but the class is too hard for a 1102 class. There are only two papers and a final project. Those are the only grades. He is the HARDEST grader I have ever had. He thinks that a C is a decent paper. His standard for an A is too high. I would not recommend this class.
Al helps his students a lot and I did not read one book for this class. It is based off of movies and tv shows which makes literature a lot more enjoyable. There is optional out of class work that helps, but does not impact your grade. Easiest A if you are a good writer.
For the entire semester, you write TWO papers total, one which is 40% of your grade. He doesn't respond to email when you tell him you need assistance, and even when you go to office hours (which is only 2 hours total a week) he isn't even there half the time! Grading is very specific, and has high standard for an A when he doesn't help when needed
I took 1102 with Professor Dixon, and this class is VERY hit or miss. One of the papers is 40% of the entire course grade, and is very vague and inconsistent with what he looks for in a paper. Only a couple students in my class managed to get an A, and I had to do everything I could to get a B+ in that class. Avoid him if you can.
Truly don't understand the hate Al gets on here. I hate writing, but I have to say I left Al's class a better writer. He doesn't sugar coat his opinions because he actually wants to give you helpful critiques. Super nice and relatable guy. Sometimes he would even have class in the founder's garden (Also gives a bunch of bonus points and extra cred)
Worst grader I have ever had. I wish I could give him a 0/5. Absolutely was not equivalent in difficulty to any other 1102 class at UGA. Save your GPA and DONT take him!!! He would think a paper was good but would still give you a C. There were only three grades, so it was very hard to recover from the first paper when EVERYONE received a C.
Al was an incredible professor and made class fun and interactive. Instead of reading old literature, we watched and analyzed movies and TV shows. He really makes you work to get an A on a paper, but is very honest and encouraging through the process. You can't wait until the last minute to write for his class, so be ready for that, but he is great
Amazing professor! Class lectures/discussions were always interesting and engaging. We only wrote 2 papers and then a final portfolio writing project, but he prepares you well and gives adequate time. He's a tough grader, but his comments are so constructive and he is accessible if you need more help! He made me a better writer, take this class!
I'm not entirely sure why people on here don't like Al because my class loved him. He gave honest feedback and was always very clear about his expectations. He is one of the only instructors I have had that actually allowed me to think for myself and express my ideas. My writing was 10x better after taking his class. 110% would take it again.
Professor Dixon is a harsh grader, however his feedback was very helpful and I really grew as a writer. I learned a lot and his expectations were very clear. As long as you follow directions and put in the work, your grade will work out. I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot.
Engineering major so writing's not my passion. But his workload is reasonable. Hw consists of reading some rubrics/slides and 1-2 journal assignments that are just completion of a certain word count. All you need to do is submit them by the end of the week (Friday). You get plenty of time to work on the larger papers. Just write interesting stuff.
A super nice and friendly person but an extremely hard grader. The topics were interesting but were hard topics. He is an extremely tough grader in my opinion.
Just take English somewhere else. If you have to take it at UGA and with him, just know that he is a very tough grader. Hit or miss. Beware of the 2nd essay and portfolio bc combined they make up 70% of your grade. Very difficult to get an A- and I would say the avg grade is a B. Really nice guy who gives good advice, but I say take someone else.
Professor is a great professor. He is honest and gives great feedback. I completely bombed an essay and he allowed me to rewrite it because he knew that I am a passionate student that could have done better. After applying the feedback he gave me, he raised my grade on the essay by many points. He really cares about his students.
I LOVED Professor Dixon's class. I've always hated English courses and never understood how to write a decent paper until taking this class. You will have to write a few journals every week but generally they're really easy and when it comes to writing papers, you're assigned small assignments to help plan out your writing. Take Al's class 100%.
Albert cares about his students and wants everyone in his class to excel. Attendance is mandatory and you write 2 papers(One worth 40% of your grade),an outline and final portfolio. He gives you weeks to work on the 40% paper, so just make sure that your working on it. He loves people who ask questions in class and gives out extra credit often.
He is an okay proferssor. He will make you write journals that will be due before every class, so don't miss any, those matter. He likes his students and wants to make sure you are updated with everything. The last part of the semester felt rushed and unorganized.
I loved Al so much. This class made me genuinely learn how to write good. He is super direct with what he is looking for, and he cares about his students a lot. There were only 3 major assignments ( 2nd one was literally the outline for the third essay), and the rest is journals to prewrite for the 3 major assignments. Classes were chill lectures.
Al genuinely cared about what he was teaching and attendance was required however some of his classes felt very repetitive and he didn't actually plan anything for that day. His assignments were clear, and he was very big on developing your own relaxed writing style and not following some sort of outline. Overall nice and grades somewhat tough.
We only had two papers and the portfolio in this class which made them very heavily weighted, but he works with you so much and will put a lot of effort into helping you if you meet with him. He does ramble a lot in class and it gets a little boring but he's very nice and only homework was quick and easy journals most nights.
I have always hated lit with a passion, and I have never been good at it. Professor Dixon gave us the freedom to write about pretty much whatever we wanted, and that allowed me to grow as a writer. He has taught me so many things, and I have enjoyed most of what we did in class. I got a 98, 97, and 102 on my papers. Great teacher and clear criteria
Al is a great professor, he allowed a lot of freedom which made the class so much more interesting. He'll challenge your ideas and make you think but is always clear with his grading expectations. Couldn't recommend him enough!
Professor Dixon is a good english teacher and you can tell he knows what he is doing. I have never been a strong writer but his class definitely open up my world about english. However he is a tough grader and wants everything perfect for even a 90. If not a strong writer would recommend someone else. He will always ask for "something deeper".
He's a fun professor to have, you mostly watch movies/tv shows, his lectures are pretty laid back and he gives a lot of time to do the assignments so deadlines shouldn't really be an issue. Definitely would take him again
Cool guy. Good teacher tough grader.
Al makes English 1101 very engaging and easy. He is aware most students are only taking it for the credit, and he structures the class to be more flexible and interesting for all students. He gives bonus points for simply putting effort into his class and makes getting a good grade as accessible as possible.
He's a good teacher if you are good at writing. His feedback is super harsh and he grades really tough. If you do take him don't take on Tuesdays and Thursdays because they drag on forever. His talking seemed to go on longer than it should. I find myself almost falling asleep in every time I had him. Attendance is mandatory but he's understanding.
He shouldn't teach ENGL 1101 because he grades students like we are in post-grad schooling. You're essays are only deemed "A" material if its written in his POV and if something you write isn't something he would put on paper, you are bound to be graded badly. Grade is determined by 4 essays and these journals. Grades hard unless you write good.
We did 2 eassys and one outline, you can get easy an A if you on top of your stuff. Only thing that was bad was jounarls they were almost everyday but easy by just beating the word count thats it.
Grade was based on 1 storytelling essay, 1 research paper and outline, and portfolio. Also 2 journals a week graded on whether you meet the word count. You're given 8 weeks to work on the research paper, so he grades harshly. In most classes, he talked the whole time. Go into deep detail in your writing and you'll pass the class. Good professor!
Professor Dixon was great. He focused not on grammar or sophistication but on tone, wording, and saying what you mean. You will be writing a lot for his class, but a lot of it is casual and doesn't feel like a chore. However, he will lecture for the entire class most days, and you should pay attention to what he is looking for in his papers.
Al is a great guy. I really improved my writing in this class. Only two big papers and a final portfolio so you don't feel like you're rushing through paper after paper. I love how he cares more about passion and purpose in writing rather than traditional grammar and "high school" type of grading. He makes it very clear what he's looking for.
This was my least favorite class I've ever taken. He treats 1102 like its a graduate level course and is a very harsh grader. He lectures the entire class time, and prohibits technology. There are journals due before class each day that are very pointless and time consuming. If you are just trying to take english for the credit, don't take Dixon.
Hes a really nice guy, who loves to talk. Grades you realistically but will push you to write hard and thoughtful on your essays. You have a journal entry before every class so expect about an hour out of class a week.. Will lecture all class. Glad I took him. I only got a B bc of my grade on the final essay which is like 45% of your grade.
I really liked this teacher, he is very fair and is always willing to give you a second chance if he knows that you are a good student. The only thing I didn't like about his course was that he had a very poor grade distribution amongst the curriculum, some projects would be worth 5% of your grade while others would be 40%.
soo many journals in this class...expect spending about an hour every night after class doing journals. but other than that, hes super nice and accessible and the discussions in class are interesting.
Al is a really nice guy. He lectures most days, but when there is a big project coming up he will provide workdays. Attendance is taken every day, but he gives 6 absences plus a mental health day. Class can be difficult if you are not a strong writer, but he's clear about what he expects. One paper is 40% of the grade so be careful. I recommend.
I would not retake this class no matter what. He grades so harshly for no reason and is extremely rude with his comments. I did so much work outside of class to get a good grade on a paper worth 40% of my grade, and I still did not do well. He grades like it is a graduate course and expects so much.
Professor Dixon is my favorite English teacher. I've never been a fan of English, but he made the class interesting and engaging. You have to write two papers, and there is a portfolio you have to do as well. Dixon is a bit of a tough grader, but as long as you genuinely try in his class, he will look out for you.
He is a good teacher overall, but is an extremely tough grader. If you are not a strong writer, good luck. His lectures are interesting and you have journals for homework after almost every class. One paper is worth 40%, but he does give some workdays in class leading up to it. I think there are better options, but definitely not the worst.
Overall, he's a really nice guy. He gives extra credit opportunities here and there and has clear grading requirements. He prefers a simple style of writing, so prepare for that. It's possible to get an A, just read the rubric over a lot and put a decent amount of effort in. Interesting lectures.
He's a nice guy and cares about helping his students. If you have in-depth questions, he'll make sure to meet with you, even sometimes outside of class through Zoom which was helpful. Sometimes his feedback can be vague but it's still helpful most of the time and he gives a lot of extra credit.
He gives 1 extra point on your final grade if you don't miss class, and overall he was quirky but a good professor. Pay attention to what he wants, and avoid using chat GPT for this class at all costs, he hates it. The second paper is weighted HEAVY, but honestly not a bad class! He is always available over email to talk about writing.
He is an amazing professor compared to the others I've seen in the department. You do have to show up to class, but that's easy. You will have journals based off of readings or films that you can complete in less than an hour (averaged me 15 minutes per journal). Only 2 papers that you will have ample time to complete and a portfolio from the dept.
I actually enjoyed going to this class, even at 8 AM. Professor Dixon likes a more discussion heavy environment which is easy with such a small class. Brings in film literature instead of just reading. Only 3 papers with one being weighed pretty heavily, but he gives you lots of feedback throughout the writing process. Gives a mental health day.
He is a really engaging teacher and leads class in a conversation style. There are journal assignments pretty much daily but theyre really not that bad, only a few hundred words each and he doesnt care what you say as long as it's somewhat on topic and meets the word count. They are also really helpful for the essays. Great teacher and good class
Professor Dixon was awesome! Although attendance is mandatory, you get 5 absences and a mental health day. There's only 2 major papers but the second is worth 40% of your grade but you have weeks to work on it. There's journals due weekly but they're very easy. Also a lot of opportunities for extra credit. Would highly recommend taking his class!
Great professor who cares! 2 papers- 1 is simple & easy, 1 is a lot longer but u choose the topic and its based on movies/shows. Most of the other 1102 professors are reading heavy, but we watch movies to analyze instead. Weekly journals take
Al a meh teacher. If you have the opportunity, take this class with someone else, but if you're stuck with him, you'll be okay. He's flexible if you have any special circumstances, but he is a very tough grader and he expects high level writing (despite this being a 1000 level class). His personality is dull and lots of journals (~800 words a week)
Attendance is mandatory, but lectures are often boring and useless. One paper is worth 40% of your grade, so it's really easy to fail and he gives C's for average work-A's are reserved for amazing writing. He's nice, but I would take someone else if you could or if you're not a strong writer.
I would say take this professor if you are a decent writer, and avoid him if you are not. The things we talk about in class are interesting. He gives lots of freedom for personal expression on the paper, but he grades pretty tough. You probably won't do well on the papers unless you care about what you're writing about. Would recommend.
this is not an entry English 1102 class, extremely difficult, insane grader, you have to write papers with ideas he has never thought of before, I will say I think I am a better writer now and have learned but for english 1102 this class was EXTREMLY hard
Overall, great professor. Super approachable, and you can tell he cares about his students. Wouldn't take this class if you aren't a strong writer. I had to really put in a lot of effort to get good grades. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Assigns a decent amount of homework but its not hard, you just have to meet the word count.
Mr. Dixon has been my favorite professor I've met so far. You can tell he actually cares about his work and his students. He offers lots of bonus points for the different papers, and even has bonus points for attendance. As long as you do the work and reach out to him for help, you will do just fine in this class. Take him if you can!
He is a pretty cool person, but his class structure and grading are awful. He grades extremely difficult, and not to mention, your last project is worth 40% of your grade, so if you do not do well on that, your grade can plummet. If you do not want to put in effort for an English class, I would not recommend this guy.
His class has been the best writing class I've ever taken! His expectations are clear. The paper that is worth 40% of your grade is intimidating, but if you follow the instructions and deadlines, it basically writes itself. His grading is hard, but if you show genuine effort and interest in your writing, your grade will reflect that.
if you aren't into reading like i am, take this class (film based)! expectations are clear, and gives tons of bonus points. you can tell he cares. 5 absences as it is a department thing, +1 mental health day! he likes more casual writing and gets you to refrain AP style. if you work hard, you'll do great. didn't receive below a 96 on any paper.
His class is film based & he played R-rated material without giving us content warnings, so if you don't want to sit through lots of weird sexual scenes (the movie Her for example) every period then don't take him. He gives you lots of opportunities to develop your ideas but is a harsh grader if you don't go deep enough or say something new
He gives good insight on how to improve writing and makes you think deeper to get better results. Film heavy, we were analysing movie scenes and such. Not much hw except for weekly journals, which were minor. 2 major papers for the whole semester, but fun bc we got to choose what to write about. Overall a good outlet for creativity.
Only 2 main papers and short journals before every class. He's super chill, a harsh grader if he doesn't like you. Every class is listening to him talk for an hour. No reading, we just watched and analyzed films. Would take again.
Class doesn't have many grades besides the major papers. He helps a lot by giving lots of feedback and telling you exactly what he's looking for. Only homework are daily journals that are simple and quick. They also help you understand your ideas better. In-class participation is very useful. Very easy class with him.
So much of this class revolves around watching Black Mirror and other films. He excuses multiple absences and is super understanding. The lectures get a little repetitive but its worth it to be in a class with assignments that are easy to do well on if you follow directions. Two journal entries a week, and two big papers are the only things graded.
