Dr. Herrera is an egotistical self-absorbed professor. His class/lectures are fine, but if you ever have to have a one-on-one conversation with him he won't even listen to what you have to say. He is so caught up on having a perfect curve that he makes the curve more important than trying to teach. Don't be borderline on grades, he won't bump up.

The class is not actually that bad (although I didn't do well--but that was due to my own laziness). A few questions on his exam are repeats from his practice tests, he does it on purpose. His test questions are application-based (e.g. "this dude is experiencing these symptoms...explain"). He rambles on during lectures.

Despite some people's whining, Herrera is the best professor I've met in the USC bio department so far. Before I took his class, the other reviews made me dread it. Turns out it wasn't that bad for me. He explained things really well and his slides were indeed useful. You might need some background and passion but it's definitely doable.

What I found vexing about this class was the fact that every word that Dr. Herrera said had the potential to be on the exam. Prof Herrera and his tests, to be honest, are NOT as hard as people described. I managed to get all As on my exams just by watching over his lecture recordings and doing some SI questions. Only around 10% of students gets an A, though. Just pay attention to lecture details because he will only test you on EXACTLY what he talked about in class.

Very similar to BISC220 in term of lectures and midterms. Tests are open note/open Internet but difficult. Write down everything he says in lecture and be able to explain all diagrams presented in his slides to prepare for exams. He loves testing intricate pathways that requires thinking through problems. The class is curved by LOTS though!

This class invites professors in the department to talk about their research. Professor Herrera gives good advice on how to find research opportunities. To pass the class you need to engage and ask questions to the speaker about their research. I actually get research using the advice he provided! Recommend for everyone interested in biology.

Humorous lecturer that goes off on tangents sometimes. All his lectures were online which has its pros and cons. Covers physiology for BISC220, which is more difficult than the cell bio half. He doesn't release his full slides. His tests are more difficult than other BISC220 professors, but it's a premed class so what do you expect.

Dr. Herrera is an amazing professor. My enjoyment of biology really grew in this class! That said, his tests are probably the hardest material you'll receive as a freshman. His lectures can also be difficult to follow, as he provides few slides. Take advantage of recordings, Q&As, practice exams (oh lordie), and SI. Prepare weeks ahead. Good luck!

Herrera teaches a difficult portion of BISC220 and people often mistake his teaching as bad. In reality, A&P is just really hard. That being said, this guy makes his test impossible. You really have to pay attention to EVERYTHING he says in lecture. Slides are not helpful because he only puts diagrams. Listen to his lectures or you will fail.

Professor Herrera is kind, and truly cares about the topics he teaches. His class is hard, but extremely interesting. He is accessible outside of class and will explain anything. He is also clearly not trying to trick people with his tests or quizzes. Though they are hard, they are certianly going to be useful for the MCAT and med school.

I'm not a fan of the language he uses sometimes - he says the attendance in his Q&A sessions are "pathetically low", he boasts about the difficulty of exams, and put down Dr. Watts for having a different style of exams. Imo failing students is nothing to brag about and he could focus on improving his slides and making his lectures clearer instead.

This is one of the worst classes I have taken at USC. Herrera presents his information in a disorganized manner while mumbling in his lecture and it is almost impossible to keep up with what he says in class. The exams are application based questions yet there is no guidance on how to excel with these besides the practice exam.
