Great lectures. He blends theory with practice and examples and serves it with a side of wicked humor. Planning on taking another class with him. I have been taking polisci classes with Dr. Kim since I took government classes at NOVA where he taught before.
Loved this professor. He blends the theory from books with real world examples or from his personal experiences as a practitioner in the world of international politics. Took several classes with him.
I took a democracy class with this professor. He made what could have been a really boring class lively and interesting.
I loved the energy that Professor Kim brought to this class. He has the ability to take a complicated topic and break it down to understandable chunks, often with a side of humor.
Love how the professor listens to and values students' opinion instead of just lecturing at them.
Class is based on a midterm exam, final presentation, and participation. Do the readings and show up for class and participate and you will do well. The professor will work with you if you work with him.
I normally avoid Friday afternoon classes like the plague, but Dr. Kim made this class all worth it. His lectures blended theory, practice, and personal observations and experiences. I would take more classes with this professor but I am graduating.
Insightful lectures that were connected to the real world. One thing, make sure to do the readings! During discussions and debates, don't try to BS if you haven't done the readings. :-P
This was the first politics class I have taken so I was a bit nervous going in but the professor made the topic and understandable. One midterm, one final, and an extra credit essay, and participation go into the grade. Do the work and you will do well.
I learned SO MUCH in this class about the Asian area. I became so interested that I will do a study abroad in Korea next year!
I was not into politics at all before I took this class with Dr. Kim. He made what I thought would be a boring topic engaging and understandable. Go Professor Kim!
The professor is a straight shooter. Come to class, do the work, and participate and you will do well.
Most informative and entertaining class I have taken a Mason.
I've taken every calss Dr. Kim has taught since he was a TA at Mason. Highly recommended! Interesting lectures delivered with appropriate side of humor and hilarious examples.
Love this prof!
Dr. Kim is young and vibrant professor. I loved the enthusiasm and energy that he has for his teaching. He was always available before and after class to chat and helped me secure a federal internship!
Good class. Learned a lot about a region I had not known before.
A breath of fresh air. Wish all professors were like Dr. Kim.
One of the few times that I enjoyed going to class on a Friday. Simply amazing professor. Insightful lectures from an informed and engaging professor.
I am the first in my family to go to college and was not so sure this was the thing for me. Taking this class with Professor Kim made me realize I had made the right choice. He really inspired and encouraged me and took the time out of his busy schedule to meet me to explain things I wasn't sure about. Best Prof EVER!
I felt the professor really respected and listened to the students and wanted to hear what we had to say. This class stresses analytic thought and doesn't engage in rote memorizing. One of the few times I felt I got my money's worth from taking classes at Mason.
I will really miss Prof. Kim. He taught me so much about Asia and also inspired me to work harder from his example. I hope he teaches another class so I can take it.
A really passionate, knowledgeable, and personable prof. Best money I spent at mason.
The class was overall quite simple and enjoyable. Prof. Kim is a rather quirky but truly knowledgeable teacher when it comes to Asia. Dont wait til last minute for class projects - the readings are just too long for that. Also speak up when it comes to the discussants - a good portion of your participation hangs on you not being a quiet person.
One of the most knowledgeable and zany professors I have had at Mason. He keeps your attention with humorous stories that are connected with the lecture at hand. If you attend, do the work, participate well, and show him that you are trying, he will work with you so you can get not only a good grade but come out learning a lot at the end.
First A+ I have gotten at GMU and I learned a lot at the same time.
Professor Kim was a great professor in the class and great mentor for me as I started my job search. Will miss coming to his class.
I liked how professor Kim did not waste students time with boring droning lectures that rehash the book. He added in examples and stories from his experience to make the concepts understandable and dare I say it, enjoyable.
Prof. Kim really cares about his students even if they are freshman students. I had question about poli sci and what direction to go at Mason and he took time out of his schedule to meet me several times before class to give me good advice. I was really touched by his genuineness and care for his students.
I LOVE the lectures from this professor. They were always informative, timely, and sprinkled with relevant real world examples and the prof's experiences. I will look for and take more classes with Prof. Kim.
A very hands on professor so be prepared for class. Do the readings and have something smart to say in lecture every now and then and study for the tests and you will do well!
I never knew the topic of revolutions was so complex. Dr. Kim made this topic understandable and more importantly, interesting, so the students paid attention in class. Learned so much!
Professor Kim's lectures were spiced up with a tongue in cheek sense of humor. It made this class enlightening but also funny which kept my attention all semester.
I first took this class as a general requirement but I enjoyed the class and professor so much that I decided to declare myself as a government major. One of the best courses I have taken at Mason.
Best professor to take govt 132 with. i was going to take 132 with another professor but found that professor so boring that I switched over to professor kim. Humorous and informative and kept my attention.
he is a very smart, caring, funny, and interesting professor but there were only 4 grades for my class. the mid term (30% of grade), final (45% of grade), paper (15% of grade) and participation (10%), if you are like me and are not a good test taker, don't take this class for the sole reason u won't get a good grade. would take again if more grades
Really enjoyed the professor's lectures and this class was one of the classes I always attended. GMU's shutdown made me concenred how classes would work out but the prof and the ta did a good job of making the online format as accessible and information packed as possible.
I am a goverment major at mason and I really enjoyed the Dr. Kim's lectures and the way he ran this class. The group project part of this course was very useful because it allowed us to put into practice the things we had learned all semester.
I am a poli sci junkie so this class was not so hard for me. What really stood out for me was how Dr. Kim ran his class through q&a with the students and how involved and passionate we all got involved in the topic. I could tell the professor really cared about what the students had to say.
Professor Kim's lectures were always useful and funny. I learned so much and he was always patient and answered all the questions I peppered him with. He loves participation from the students so do the readings and come prepared to answer some questions he poses for the class. Makes you look smart!
I was hesitant about taking this class because I had never taken any government courses but the professor did a good job of breaking down political concepts and applying them to real world examples so I got it. Graded on a few things so there was no busy filler work that is a complete waste of time.
Great class. Professor was kind and obviously cared about his students. I am a working student so I couldn't make it to every lecture, but the professor understood and gave me a way to make up this part of my grade. If you are up front with this professor, he will work with you.
Professor Kim was a very good professor. I enjoyed his lectures and he was hilarious. The only thing I did not like was how we only had two exams, one weighing almost half of your grade. If you arent a very good test taker prepare yourself at least a week in advance. Other than that it was a good class!
Dr Kim was one of the smartest and best professors I have had at mason. His lectures always taught me something and made me think. His sense of humor was infectious and he had the entire class laughing and enjoying learning.
I checked my final grade and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the class and the professor but I thought the papers I turned in were just so-so but Prof Kim seemed to have thought otherwise. He emailed me to say he had enjoyed reading my final paper. That made my day!
One of the few classes I was genuinely interested in and attended even when I felt tired and would have skipped if it were another class. Professor Kim's jokes and wit when lecturing had me laughing to myself many times. Some of the students around me must have thought I was a lunatic. Grading is straightforward and grades on a few things.
Prof Kim was not only a thoughtful and intelligent prof, he was also a great mentor. Learned a lot about Asian politics and how to succeed in college from him.
Great into class to politics. My group members in the group project were MIA but Professor Kim and his TA helped me hunt them down. Our group ended up having a good project.
Good class and sweet professor!
Professor Kim took a complex topic and made it understandable. I learned revolutions aren't what people mistakenly think they are and tht they happen at times that are almost counterintuitive.
Great class with no waste of students time.
Enjoyed professor Kim's lectures when the class met in person before the campus shut down but I found the online lectures the professor uploaded good too with lots of good information.
Informative and interesting lectures. Prof Kim was always willing to answer questions after lecture and help out his students. He was a genuine professor who cared about his students success.
It's obvious Dr. Kim is passionate and knowledgeable about international relations. He explains the complicated material well and uses easy examples that students get. He had me laughing when he tried to use current slang to explain the material. The " problem was that the slang was "current" ten years ago.
Dr. Kim's lectures were some of the best I've attended at Mason or anywhere else. He speaks animatedly about the Asian region and brings in his wealth of experiences to complement the theories and facts he teaches. He seemed to care about and take personal interest in each of the students and remembered even the smallest details we mentioned!
I learned so much about int politics from Prof Kim. I am a bit shy and usually never speak up in class, but Prof Kim's encouragement of the students to voice their thoughts and be heard really helped me get over my fear of public speaking a bit. Still won't be the center of attention, but I feel like I can now speak my piece if I want to.
I took this course because I had interest in the Asian area but did not know too much about it. I ended up learning enough that I can now speak passably about the area if I ever have to. Dr. Kim was so encouraging of the students and when I asked him about how the graduate school application process worked, he explained and helped me apply. Wow!
First gov class I took at mason but it was so good I am planning to take more and maybe declare myself as a gov major.
Engaging, smart, and very smart professor! Prof made us think, question, and not just accept things from authority or because it has always been that way. Favorite classes during the semester were the class debates arguing varied viewpoints with lively back and forth.
Prof Kim had my attention every lecture and this class was one of the ones I looked forward to coming to. Class was graded on the usual of a midterm, final, paper and attendance/participation. Will miss the prof.
I will remember this class and Dr. Kim not only because of how much I learned about Asian politics but also because the professor was one of the most intelligent, funny and nicest people ever. I had some personal issues during the semester and the prof noticed it and asked if something was wrong and tried to help.
Class is straightforward and full of good material. The professor always had some interesting tidbit to add that make the online class enjoyable. I wish the class was in person because I think the prof would have been even more of a hoot in person.
I learn better through listening rather than reading and Prof Kim's lectures were full of information that was far from boring. His sense of humor was spot on an kept my attention and had me trying to control my laughter at times.
Dr Kim is a young and passionate professor cares about his students. In this asian politics class, he stressed he was more interested in hearing about our informed opinions rather than if we could "throw up the readings" (his words) back at him. I have never thought so much in a class as I did in this class. Best class ever!
Dr. Kim is a fount of knowledge for all thing IR. He seems to have a story or example to explain and answer any question a student might have and the answer is always spot on and is humorous to boot. He was always happy and gracious with the students and made us all feel welcome so we were never scared to speak up.
I have always hated classes where I had to memorize and have a boring professor stand at the front of the class and drone on and on about a topic. Prof Kim is far from that. I will admit that I tried to trip him up once with some seeming contradiction of the political theories we were learning, but his answer made me think in an entirely new way.
The professor was one of the most genuine educators I have had in my life. He cared that the students not only learned the material but they understood it and could speak their mind. Not a show up and pass class but definitely worth it if you want to learn about politics and Asia.
Dr. Kim is a younger professor who cares that his students learn and sees his students as people rather than just another group that he has to process each semester. I am really interested in politics and I admit I asked Dr. Kim so many questions during and after class, but he was so patient and thorough answering my questions. I will miss him!
Dr. Kim is so smart but so humble. He knows a lot about international relations stuff but explained it and taught it to us without putting in his bias and always encouraged us to have our own opinions as long as we could support them. I want to become a teacher in the future and I took inspiration from this prof.
I went into Prof Kim's revolutions class not knowing much about the topic and because I need an advanced polisci course to graduate. I left knowing learning so much about what is a revolution and how one might begin. I liked down the class was focused on using real world examples and events instead of just dry theories like other profs do.
Such a smart and fun professor. He had so much energy and enthusiasm for international politics that the students got excited and learned. A refreshing change from the boring traditional lecture only profs.
A knowledgeable and caring professor. Dr. Kim takes personal interest in his students and will go out of his way to help you succeed in his class. He worked with me step by step for my final paper and was always patient explaining the often hard concepts.
I really wasn't sure if I would do well in this class because this class was changed to an online format and I am not a government major. However, Dr Kim was really great and timely with the feedback for our assignments so I learned from each time I did an assignment. He also was available to explain the readings at any time. Go Dr. Kim!
Professor Kim is such an amazing Professor. I took him for Revolutions and there is a paper every week, but as long as you reflect on the readings and try to compare and contrast youll be fine! Reading seems like a lot but as long as you do a bit more than skim, you should be ok! Overall, not a tough grader at all. Hes super nice too!
2020 is just not my year. I needed this revolutions class to graduate but I had so much going on in my family life that I didn't think I would be able to pass this class. Professor Kim noticed this and he contacted me to set up an alternative way that I could do the assignments. I ended up learning a lot and also doing better than I ever thought.
I always got amazing lectures from Prof. Kim every time I went to class. He explained Asian politics in a manner that even the newbie to thr topic could understand. Grades are based on participation and being prepared for class so bring your A game.
Dr Kim is wonderful lecturer who can take complicated topics and make them understandable with simple examples and stories. I loved how he explained the prisoner's dilemma and game theory using examples of dating. What a hoot! Grades are straightforward... midterm, final, attendance and participation. Also extra credit if you need it.
Dr. Kim is a true educator and it is obvious that his heart is into teaching students. The class is clear cut with a midterm, a final, participation, and an optional extra credit paper. Dr. Kim tells you that he is willing to work with you if you put in the effort and this reassurance helped us focus on learning rather than just grades.
This is the best class I have taken at Mason in my 4 years here. Dr. Kim kept my attention the whole semester and was amazing in the depth and breadth of knowledge about Asian IR. He was also the kindest and most understanding professor ever and helped us enjoy learning the material instead of being worried about grades.
I am freshman at Mason. I loved the lectures that the professor gave for this course and learned so much about international politics! My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that there were more assignments that went into the grade for the course than just a midterm, final, participation, and an extra credit paper.
Prof Kim is awesome!!! His lectures are interesting, and you'll never get bored in his class. Honestly, I am glad I took this class because I learned a lot through discussions and his lectures. The readings were reasonable, and the midterm is easy as long as you go over the powerpoints.
Highly recommend Professor Kim for GOVT 132. Follow the readings and study for the mid/final and you will get an A. He posts the lecture notes before the exams and turned the syllabus-listed group paper into an individual extra credit paper. His lectures are engaging, but be sure to be attentive as he will test from the lectures.
Prof. Kim is honestly one of the greatest Professors at GMU. I took this during COVID, Prof. Kim was so understanding for everything that came up. You have to take him, honestly. Go to class or you will fail. Put in the work and Prof. Kim will always make sure you get credit. He is so funny and entertaining. Truly cares about us. I was not a number.
Prof Kim is one of those rare professors who takes the time to get to know the students and their names and a little bit about each of them. He was so considerate with his time and helped me before and after lecture on parts of the class I didn't get. Grades are based on midterm, final, and final paper but he is considerate if you do the work.
Walk, no run to sign up for any class with Professor Kim! His lectures are clear, informative, and most often wickedly witty. You will learn a lot about asian politics if you can get into 333. Prof. Kim's class usually close very quickly during the registration periods so sign up early.
Professor Kim is one of the few profs willing to have an in person class and I am so thankful for it. I am so sick of online classes where both profs and students are unmotivated and it shows. In Prof Kim's class, I learned so much about IR and also the real world applications of it. He was also a great counselor and adviser for jobs!
Last Summer, this class was entirely asynchronous and consisted of readings and 1-page papers evaluating each of them. While Revolutions are a fun topic for me, writing responses every Tuesday and Thursday was easy to forget about and got very tiring. There was almost no interaction with classmates or Prof Kim. He also graded harshly and slowly.
Maybe it's just me being an international relations junkie but I didn't find the material too hard. What I really enjoyed was the free interchange of thoughts and comments that the professor encouraged between the students and himself. He always took the time to earnest listen to students comments and always answered our questions fully.
Prof Kim helped me understand what a revolution is not what is is not. After taking thus class, I started to more critically think about the issue. There were readings and a short paper every week but if you do the readings and try to be thoughtful in the papers, you'll do well.
Great intro class into IR. It helped me get my feet underneath me about this major. Professor Kim was simply the best prof at Mason hands down. He always had time for the students and was so king. He was also a generous grader if you do the work and show you are trying and doing your best.
Readings seemed a bit daunting at first but you quickly find out that they are related and build upon each other. As long as you read the most important reading for the week thoroughly and skim the rest well, you will be okay. Professor Kim does have a short paper each week but they were simple if you did the reading. Learned lots and enjoyable.
I can't believe I am saying this but this but I actually had a BLAST in this class. Prof. Kim is the real deal - smart, funny, kind, and a old school educator. His understanding of international politics is amazing and he explained things so well that everyone understood the topics quickly. His jokes were quirky and nerdy but appreciated!
I won't look at revolutions the same way again after taking this class with Dr. Kim. I took this during covid and the class was all online. There were short analytic papers based on the readings but the professor was always quick in grading and providing feedback to what you wrote. Do the readings, write, and you'll do well. Grades were generous.
Best professor I have ever had. I liked how I not only learned a lot about international relations but also how the professor treated us as individuals and not as a G number. The prof was also truly caring about each student's situations.
Finally managed to get into Professor Kim's Asian IR class and an quite pleased with the class. Prof Kim's lectures are full of relevant and useful examples to explain the sometimes complex theories. His lecture style is enthusiastic and engaging. Midterm was not too bad if you come to class and pay attention. Final project was actually kind of fun
The most knowledgeable, funniest, and kindest profs I have ever had. The prof's lectures are full of information but he presents it in a way that is easy to understand and oftentimes very funny so it is memorable. One thing, make sure to attend his lectures even though he doesn't take roll since many exam questions come from the lectures.
Professor Kim's classes compress a week's worth of lecture in one sitting, but it is well worth it. He doesn't waste his or students' time in lecture and teaches in a manner that gives the most relevant information in a memorable manner. He does tend to ask questions from the lectures on his midterm so try to attend most of the time. Recommended!
Dr. Kim is the single best professor I have ever had at GMU. His lectures are the best! He will teach you in a very engaging manner. The only critique I would have is that the student discussant can be depended on for some class material, but the fault lies on the students. Take this professor, there's a reason he has a perfect score here.
Prof. Kim is a really great teacher and person at the same time. He taught us international relations in a way that was accessible for students who knew about the subject and those who weren't. He never made the students feel stupid and encouraged us to speak our thoughts and respected us. This was so different from other profs I have had.
I really enjoyed this course and the lectures. There are only two grades outside of attendance, a midterm and a final. I am a BAD test taker so for me this wasn't ideal, but if you test well the exams were very straight forward. Come to lecture and do the reading and you'll do great. SUPER about helping me out with extra credit to bump up my grade.
The professor is an amazing teacher and person. It's clear that his focus is really on his students and teaching so the lectures are not only interesting, you learn a lot just by listening. He is also really generous with extra credit so if you attend, do the work, and show you are trying, he will work with you so you can succeed.
Not only is Dr. Kim a wonderful lectures and kindest professors ever, he uses class time so efficiently. His lectures are always on point, full of great information, and he supplements the topics with his experiences and witty jokes. This class was so different in a good way from other professors who just lecture and bore students to death.
Best class I have had at Mason. Prof Kim was so smart and taught us international relations with such great enthusiasm that I could not help but learn. I came into this class at first just mildly interested but have now decided to major in politics because of Prof Kim. Seriously, take every class this professor teaches if you can get a spot.
I loved this professor and class so much! I never knew polisci could be this interesting and applicable to the real world. Lectures always kept my attention and I never dreaded coming to class. I am not the best test taker but the professor made sure we understood what he expected and did best so we could all succeed.
Best lecturers I have ever had in school. Dr. Kim makes sure you learn the material because he keeps you interested in the topic and often makes jokes that illustrate the point. There are student presentations during the second part of the class so make sure you have done the readings and bring your A game. Some were great, others not so much.
I am basically Dr. Kim's camp follower since I have taken every class he teaches. I took this class in my last year since I somehow totally forgot I needed this credit to graduate. True to form, this intro class did not disappoint. Lectures were awesome and the prof's enthusiasm for the class and material motivated the students.
This Asia IR class was the best government class I have take at Mason. I really like the first part of the class where Dr. Kim lectured. He always had so many stories or examples from history or his career in government to explain the things we were learning. Second part of the class had student lead analytic discussions. Most were good though.
Dr. Kim is the read deal and who I want to be like in the future. He has the academic background and is also a international relations practitioner. I love how his lectures always incorporated the real life consequences to the theories we studied in class. He places a lot of importance on lectures so make sure to attend to do well. Greatest prof!
Prof has a lot of good ratings, but my own experience differs. In this class you are on your own. There are no class meetings. I felt this is a revolution reading class that needed discussion. The worst of it, you will be graded on just two things: analysis paper for every week(55%) and final paper. Imagine you missing 1 paper. I won't recommend.
I took this course during the summer session and with the smaller class size, the professor was able to give us individualized attention and was more of a mentor to the students rather than a professor. Politics was not my specialty and it still isn't but I feel I know more about the world now and can understand it.
I took this intro to int relations class with Dr. Kim last spring and I loved it. Dr. Kim is really funny and smart so you spend your time in lecture both learning and trying not to crack up. Grades are based on midterm, final, participation, and an optional extra credit. Do the readings and show up and the prof will work with you do you do well.
I am a working student and my schedule is pretty tight. I was so glad Prof Kim did not have these time waster of online "classes" where all the students have their cameras and mics off as they goof off. Prof Kim's class is direct. If you do the readings, write the papers, incorporate his feedback, you will do well. He is available to chat if needed
Wonderful class and very informative. The professor not only taught well but made sure the students never got bored. This was the first afternoon class that I never was tempted to skip. Just wish there were more grades than a midterm and a final, but if you show up and do the work, you will be all right.
I took this revolutions course online with Dr. Kim because my work schedule prevented me from making a set day and time each week for classes. The course expectations were simple with short essays for each week's readings and a final paper. Dr. Kim was so understanding when I was sometimes late with assignments. Highly recommended.
Prof's lectures are so amazing that you want to come to class. He explains not only the complexity that is Asian politics well but he does it in a way that is memorable so it sticks with you. I have used what I learned in this class in my other govt classes. Make sure to attend classes because the prof knows if you don't attend!
Professor Kim is an amazing professor and has the heart of an educator. It's obvious he loves the topic and he will work with his students so they succeed. I have taken every class Prof Kim offers and am excited that he will teach a Korean politics class soon. Consider me signed up already.
Dr. Kim is the friendliest, smartest, and most accessible prof I have ever had at Mason. I really enjoyed the lecture part of this Asian politics class where I learned something new every class. I use so much of what I learned from Dr. Kim in grad school at Mason. One point, choose a good group for the group project though! Slackers are awful!
Prof was really smart about the Asian area and explained topics with his professional experiences. If you do the readings, come to class, and participate, you'll do well. I really appreciated how the prof took the time to memorize our names and things about us. Felt like an individual and not a number for the first time at gmu.
Loved the class and the prof ! Only critique I have is that the professor didn't need to be so accommodating to disruptive students. There was a guy who was a Chinese gov shill and always tried to "educate" the prof and students about the "truth" of how great the Chinese gov was. He also claimed that nothing was happening in Xinjiang...
My first and best politics class. Enjoyed the class and the professor so much that I am now a global affairs major.
I went into this class not knowing anything about international relations. After this class, I feel like I now have a decent grasp about IR and how it works. While I am still no expert, I think I can now understand how the world works and have an opinion about the topic. Also, Dr. Kim is simply the best! Take his class if you can get a spot.
Most bang for the buck as the saying goes. Dr. Kim doesn't waste class time with busy work or try to fill up the time slot by droning on and on. He respects the students time and delivers his lectures filled with information and encourages us to think for ourselves. Grades are based on midterm, final, participation, and a paper. Straightforward.
Most personable and knowledgeable professor I have ever had. If you take this class you will learn so much about Asia and have fun doing it. Group project was actually fun but I guess it was because I had an awesome group.
I took this Korean politics class with Dr. Kim because I enjoyed the 333 class with him so much. This class was a bit different than other gov classes because it is a seminar class and the learning happens through discussion and analysis of the readings and events. I felt Dr. Kim respected us and ran the class as a mentor guiding us.
This class was one of my first class coming to Mason and I didn't have a politics background so I was nervous about trying this. Dr. Kim's lectures was so easy to understand and thought provoking that I learned everything so easily. Plus, he was so generous with his office hour time to explain things to me. A prof with a heart!
Enrolled because I am a Kpop fan and stayed for the insightful class and amazing professor. I learned so much about Korea and now I can even explain decently why Kpop is so successful and what it is and how Korea uses it. Who would have thought I could do this??
This was my first class with professor Kim and hopefully not the last. I have enjoyed this class a lot. The work load is very simple and if you keep up with it and show interest at worst you'll finish a C. I don't think anybody failed the class. Plus the guy is charming and chill.
I never knew a professor could be so relaxed and still teach us about int relations in a way that we couldn't help but learn. Prof. Kim lectures and teaches us with stories and examples that make political concepts relatable and digestible. Plus, he actually listens to student comments and learns with us. Sign up for his classes before they fill.
I loved him as a professor. He is a fairly laid-back person and he makes his lectures interesting. That being said, be prepared to read for this class. You are often assigned a textbook chapter with 2-3 other documents to read. Your grade is based on a weekly paper (1 page) on the readings, a midterm, and two group assignments.
I always left each class more thoughtful than when I entered. The professor is so passionate about the class and he urges us to think for ourselves rather than telling us what to think. Grades are based on a few things such as a midterm, final project, and some papers, but if you do the readings and participate, you'll be totally fine.
I'd advise anyone who is interested in gov classes to take this class with Prof K! His lectures are so informative and often hilarious. A part of the course requirement is group work but I was lucky to be in an awesome group so was enjoyable. Enroll in the class if you can (fills up quick) and do the work and get a good grade while learning.
Dr. Kim really cares that his students learn the material. His main focus was that we learned and could apply the concepts that we were learning in class. The readings in the class were reasonable and if you attend class regularly and participate, you will come out of the class with a good grade and having learned so much about the political world.
Dr. Kim had amazing lectures and showed us what International Relations was over the course of the semester. However, I do feel as though the course was "too simple" in terms of its grading, with one midterm and one final accounting for over 70% of your grade. I wish that he accommodated students with other assignments to get easy points.
Most exciting and energetic professor I have ever had. Professor Kim's lectures were always very information packed and kept the attention. His lecture sessions were always full with very few students not attending. The prof's grading was not too hard and he is generous with extra credit.
The class was the most enjoyable one that I've had in a long while. Readings were reasonable and relevant and the lectures were very fun and always taught me something new about int politics. I admit I slacked off on the midterm but did the extra credit and studied my butt off for the final and came out of the class with a good grade.
Such a smart professor and genuinely caring person! Dr. Kim taught in a way that made us feel like we were all valued participants in the class instead of a professor just lecturing at students. I loved the debates and back and forth discussions we had through the semester. Midterm was fair and the final project was actually enjoyable and useful.
Spellbinding lectures about international relations which kept my attention all semester. My class had lots of participation so each session was enjoyable so much that I was surprised how quickly each class ended. Course is graded on a midterm, final, and participation. Do the readings and come to class and you will pull out a good grade.
Very enjoyable class! One lecture a week with matching readings. He stuck to the syllabus. He also didn't bore us, and added humor/fun facts into the mix. Only thing is there were basically two grades for most students (unless you went for the one extra credit assignment) so take notes and you'll do great!
I wish Dr. Kim taught more classes at GMU. I have taken every class that this prof teaches and learned so much. Govt 132 made me smart on politics quickly. Dr. Kim compressed and taught so much relevant knowledge in a fun and understandable manner. Make sure to attend classes and take note well. Tests are based a lot on lectures so dont miss class.
To be honest, I signed up for this Korean politics class not because I had interest in Korea, but because I LOVED all the classes I took with Dr. Kim. I soon developed an interest and and grew to appreciate its importance in Asian politics. Plus, I now notice Korea's "soft power" in small things in my every day life. Much recommended, sign up!
Dr. Kim is simply the best prof at GMU, hands down! For this class, he took what could have been dry boring information about Korean politics and made it come alive with cool exercises and activities. Plus, he takes a genuine interest in what the students think about the topic rather than just lecturing. Take all his classes if you can.
If you're a fan of classes where you can just attend and coast, this class is not for you. Professor Kim is a great educator who personally invests in helping students in his class understand the course material and can apply it. His lectures are some of the best I've ever had in college. Do the readings and come prepared to participate.
He is an incredible professor, I would recommend him to everyone. He is really considerate of his students and he wants to see them succeed. He understands the struggles of being a student and he is very communicative He will make sure you do well in his class. His lectures were very interesting and engaging. One of the best professors at Mason.
I took this class with Prof Kim because I enjoyed taking other classes with him and because I had a passing interest in Korea and needed a 400 level course to graduate. That passing interest has now become a true interest in the country and Northeast Asia to boot. Prof Kim, as always, delivers the best lectures that are informative and fun.
I loved how Dr. Kim added value to each and every lecture he did. Instead of just going over the readings, he would predict the questions we had over the topics for any given week during the semester and prepare a lecture that answered all the questions we may have had. It was always funny that when he asked if we had any questions, we didn't. :-P
Learned so much about international relations, Asia and useful tips when entering the "real world". Wish I had discovered this professor earlier, but I am graduating. Highly recommend you take a class with Prof Kim.
I took the course with Prof Kim during a summer session. Lectures were intense because the entire session was six weeks but Prof Kim made sure we covered all the material and made the lectures so interesting that I didn't notice the time passing. Highly recommend you take gov courses with this prof.
The definite "Easy A" & "caring" kind of professor. Had him for a summer, 5-week class & we only had a mid-term & final both with 50 easy multiple choice Qs worth 1 point each. Passing really depends on attendance & active participation in class. 2 unexcused absences & you're out. He's very considerate of his students & gives career advice.
The prof is definitely one of the kindest and most genuine profs I've ever had at Mason. He's super smart and knows so much on so many topics. For this class, he connected Korean politics to current events and made the class super fun, even if the topic of the week was a bit boring. Grades were based on short papers, final project, and attendance.
Dr. Kim is great, I highly recommend taking his class. He makes lectures engaging and always connects topics to real-world events. I found myself looking forward to this course. However, your grade depends on only two things: the midterm and the final. There is a small extra-credit opportunity, but beware of the exams and prepare in advance.
Who would have thought this class would make me sign up to go to Mason's campus in Korea? Right here, me! I loved the Korean politics class and prof so much that I will go to Korea in Aug. Class was full of information and fun. Grades are based on short papers, presentations, and participations so due what you're expected of and you'll get an A.
Folks, will make it simple. Take classes with Dr. Kim. You'll get your tuition worth by learning, enjoying yourself, and getting a good grade. You're welcome!
This is the last class I will be able to take with Dr. Kim since I will be graduating in the upcoming semester but I can't recommend him enough! I first took an intro politics class with him when I was a freshman and have taken every class he teaches at Mason. Learned so much and Dr. Kim was a great mentor and helped me get a federal job offer.
Dr. Kim really knows his stuff. He is so knowledgeable about everything in Asia and he is really into the subject. Lectures were great and the student presentations were generally good though some students didn't prepare enough. The curve for the class was generous. Do the work and show up and you'll be fine.
Truly the best professor I have ever had - bro still sends me internship opportunities and I had him last year. 100/10 would reccomend
Loved how the professor puts theory to practice. I not only learned the history and causes of revolution, I also learned to apply them to real world examples through in class case studies and scenarios. Never a dull moment in this class with this professor.
No midterm or final for this Korean politics class. Show up for the interesting and entertaining lectures and participate and do the readings and write the papers that show you have done more than summarizing and you'll do well. The final group project was actually quite fun.
As someone who actually worked on Korean issues for the US government, the professor really does know his stuff about Korean politics. The stories the professor would tell us about working on this topic were oftentimes comical, terrifying, serious, etc but always impactful. You can't do bad in this class if you read, participate, and show you care.
I love how Prof Kim did not just lecture at the students. My favorite classes were when the prof sat down with us and we had a big seminar session where we all analyzed and applied the readings we did before the class. I have had too many classes where the prof just summarizes the readings during lecture so this difference was great.
If you do the readings and come to lecture prepared to talk intelligently about the topics you read, you'll do well in this class. The professor is a great teachers and a nice person who genuinely cares about his student. He makes the class come alive with his experiences working on Korean issues in his job for the US government. 6 out of 5 stars!
One of my favorite teachers at GMU. He's funny, he gets straight to the point, keeps the whole class engage and pushes you to learn how to work in groups. Short essays based on readings so get ready to read! Overall an awesome class!
Really chill and easy on the grading. His class was INCREDIBLY discussion driven, he didn't really lecture at all.Readings were heavy & classes felt like a glorified book club and he was just the facilitator. Wouldn't recommend for anyone other than those w considerable knowledge of IR and revolutions beforehand and just looking to talk about it.
You can be a gov major or someone who has no knowledge of the major and this class will be valuable to all. The first part of each class covers theory and the second part is the application of what you just learned. Recommended!
Last semester at Mason and glad to end out college with Dr. K. As usual, the prof didn't disappoint. I had no knowledge of Korea when I signed up (just signed up because of the prof) but I came out understanding Korea's place in the world. Also decided to do a phd because of Dr. K. Hope this is a good idea. Famous last words!
If you want a class where you can coast in the back of the classroom, this class isn't for you. The professor expects you to have done and understand the readings and then come prepared to talk about it. I found the class discussion so much more useful than death by powerpoints type of classes where the prof drones on about things we had just read.
Loved the class and the instructor. Rare class where I learned and enjoyed coming to class. The instructor is also a really chill and flexible person with a quirky sense of humor that makes you have fun while you learn. I can even explain why China and India don't get along now.
If you want a class where you can sit in the back and coast, this isn't the class for you. You're expected to have done the reading, understand it, and then come to lecture to expand and talk about it. The last part made this class so great for me! What a refreshing change from endless droning slides and the prof lecturing at you. You really learn.
I took this class at first just to fulfill my Asia concentration requirement and because I heard good things about the professor. Dr. Kim lived up to all the good things I heard. He is a smart and engaging and funny professor who bought Korean politics to life. There was never a dull class and he motivated the students to talk, work together.
The smartest and kindest professor I've ever met. His knowledge and experience in Asian politics is incredible. The best thing is that he can make this topic easy to understand for even non global affairs majors and make all the students excited about the topic. Speaking up is important in the class and I am a shy person but even I was able to.
Professor Kim is awesome, I enjoy the discussions held in class they are very engaging. He tries to bring quiet people out of their shell but participation in these discussions are very important. I did not like the group projects though.
I admit I had a rocky start of a semester but the professor was really considerate. I found the lectures fascinating and the discussions really helpful in learning the material. The two pairs presentation required for class was actually interesting with students participating a lot. Great class and very active and passionate professor.
I have taken all the classes that Dr. Kim teaches so I had an independent study and thesis writing class with him in this class. I learned so much as Dr. Kim challenged my assumptions and pushed me in my this big paper. At the end, I submitted this paper for publication in a student journal and it was accepted. :-)
I dread online classes that Mason seems bent on offering currently but Dr. Kim's class was one of the few that didn't put me to sleep. He tries hard to engage the students and keep them interested in the topic. Tests aren't that hard if you pay attention and apply yourself to the material and don't expect to be spoon fed like high school.
I loved how different Prof Kim is to other professors at Mason. He made Korean politics come alive with scenarios and role playing. He made the subject come alive and got all students to participate in topics that did not seem at first it would be interesting. Inspirational prof and person.
While his lectures are interesting the entirely of your grade in the course is based on the midterm and final exam. Got our midterm grades back last week, this was our first grade in the class in 4 months. He emphasized his lectures to study but 95% of questions came from the text. Average was 60%. I prefer application to memorization so be weary.
Participation is required in this class so make sure to do the readings and come prepared for class. Dr. Kim really values the student's input so don't come to lecture and zone out and expect to do well. The class covers so many countries in Asia so it can seem overwhelming at first, but Dr. Kim makes sure to include only important details.
Currently in the Korean politics class. Have to say this is one of the most interesting and even fun class I have ever taken. The professor takes what we read and makes it engaging through scenarios and roleplay. You really get into the roles and even though you know it is make believe, you really get into it. Won't forget this class ever.
Online classes are rough but this professor made this class as enjoyable as one of these classes can be. He is obviously knowledgeable about the topic and passionate about the material. He made what could have been a 2 hour snoozefest into a rather fun class. Jokes during the semester were appreciated.
Folks will make this simple, take any class that Prof Kim offers. You can't go wrong. As a non global affairs major, I learned so much about IR with this prof. Plus, he makes the class fun and had me cracking up with his off color jokes.
The prof is interesting and informative during class lectures. However, his downfall is communication and being attentive. Chapters in the syllabus don't match the textbook, little communication about exams such as start and end time and content. Didn't make review material available until 24 hours before the final. Good lecturer, bad at the rest.
My last semester at Mason and I took this class as an elective but I enjoyed the class because of the lectures. Professor knew the topic and made the material we were learning actually fun. Midterm was simple since the professor literally kept telling the class during class discussions up to the day of the test what to focus on. Hard not to do well
Folks it's simple, take every class that has Dr. Kim as the instructor. I've taken all the classes he teaches but the Korean politics class was my fave. Dr. Kim assumes you have done the readings and understand it so he used the class to apply the material and make it as "real world" as possible. We had scenarios, roleplay, games. Take this class!
Inspiring professor who cares about his students. I never thought I would get into Korean politics but this class made me appreciate the topic. Originally signed up an an elective but one of the best classes I've take at this school.
This IR class was simple and direct. If you do the readings and pay attention in lecture, you'll do well. The professor notices if you don't attend regularly or participate so make sure you do. Lots of chances for extra credit. Raised my grade from a high B to an A.
His class is a memorization system. your grade is dependent only on two exams which you do not know even how to study. He maybe sent just two emails entire class.
This Korean politics class was very relaxed and the prof encouraged the students to speak up and say their thoughts. Class was based on discussion and there were no tests, just short papers, a presentation, final presentation, and final paper. Overall thoroughly enjoyed the class and prof.
Readings are pretty easy. Your grade is based on 2 things a midterm and final. Overall lectures are pretty interesting, but the test are all over the place and a bit too hard for this level of a class.
First global affairs professor I had at Mason who didn't give open note and book exams that were easy an A At first I didn't like this but it forced me to actually try to understand the class. First A grade I am proud of in this school. Signed up for other classes with thus professor.
I really enjoyed the lectures about asian politics at the beginning of each class and the discussions about the weekly topics. Class also had weekly short presentations by students and some were great and others were so-so which is to be expected. Felt I learned a lot from this class and the enthusiastic professor.
One of the few classes that doesn't have endless busy work assignments. Professor expects you to keep up with the readings, attend and participate in class and basically be an adult. Class grade is based on a midterm, final, and participation so don't slack off. Also, the professor values participation in the class so speak up.
Professor Kim is an absolutely incredible professor, he is engaging and very social in class. Don't expect long lectures on material and topics, more open form conversations and discussions based on readings. He is very understanding and provides great feedback. DO the readings and attend class and you'll have a great time, 10/10.
I am a Dr. Kim fanboy! I took the Korean politics class because a friend couldn't stop referring this professor to me. The rumors were even better than advertised. I looked forward to lectures and really enjoyed the activities that applied the lessons. Can't go wrong with any class with Dr. Kim.
Lectures made this class. Prof. Kim could make what seemed like it'd be a dry topic and make it kinda fun and relatable with his stories and experiences. Exams are focused on the lectures so make sure to attend regularly. He is a merciful grader and generous with extra credit as long as you have done your best and participated.
Really fun and low pressure class. Dr. Kim prefers you listen, think, and participate and is not a stickler on grading. If you attend class and participate, you'll do well in the class and also learn a lot about Korea
Don't skip his class, after the absences, he might fail you. Shouldn't be a problem though, his classes get you up to speed with the readings, and he leads some really interesting discussions on the material. Group projects make up 2 grades, so make sure you coordinate ahead of time. He's super caring, and looks out for all of his students.
I took this class in the summer. Thankfully the class didn't go the full 4.5 hours since the prof let us out in 3. Lectures kept my attention and the 3 hours passed by quickly and I actually enjoyed coming to class twice a week. Grades are based on two exams, participation, and an optional extra credit assignment so don't slack.
The Korean politics class did have a fair amount of readings but as long as you skim well and think about some smart things to say in class, you'll be fine. The professor's great lectures and fun scenarios, role playing, and other activities in the lectures made the class. These activities brought the material to life. Five stars.
The professor led some really interesting discussions and his lectures kicking off the class was always insightful. Loved his sense of humor in delivering the material. There was some group projects but I was lucky to have a group of good folks. Make sure to attend class or you might fail!
Really fun class on Korea that I previously knew nothing about. Readings were manageable but the group activities and class dynamics made the class worth it. You can tell the professor knows his stuff and is making the class enjoyable. Recommend everyone to take the class. One of the best classes and professors at Mason.
Wonderful professor who cares about the material and class. Reading load was manageable and the class grade was mainly based on discussion and presenting so do the readings and come prepared. Also, attendance and participation are important so make sure to come to class.
If you show up to class willing to learn and do the work, you'll do well. Readings sometimes were a lot but the class activities and lectures made it all become clear. Didn't know anything about Korea before this class but I have developed enough interest to want to learn more. Best part of the class was no tests, just papers and projects.
Dr. Kim made what could have been a boring class rather fun. He kept my attention during the semester and I never dreaded coming to class. He doesn't believe in busy work so make sure you do the readings and pay attention in class because the course is graded on a few things. He's always willing to help out so go to him if you need help.
Took this class asynchronously and liked how accessible the professor was. I did the readings and assignments on my own time and met with the professor online when I didn't get something. The professor was always so gracious and explained the material I didn't understand. If you need to take a class asynchronously, take it with Dr. Kim.
Professor Kim really values student input and he runs this course like a mini graduate seminar. My class had a great group of students and Professor Kim's encouragement to speak up made the semester lively with great discussions. Missing out if you don't take this class. One warning, attendance matters so show up or you might fail.
Hands down the best class I've ever had at Mason. Learned so much about Korean politics through role playing, war-gaming, and scenarios. Readings were manageable and interesting but the application activities made this class pop. Loved the energy, enthusiasm, and humor of the Dr. Kim.
The seminar format kind of scared me at first since I wasn't use to speaking up in class. However the professor encouraged us all to speak up and after a bit, the entire class was able to say our opinions. I usually dread Monday classes but I always enjoyed coming to this class even though it was in the afternoon.
You can't go wrong with any class with Dr. Kim. He knows his stuff about international relations and has lots of practical experience he occasionally shares in class. He pushes his students in a good way and I came out of class seeing the world in a more nuanced light. True educator.
Rare class that students are encouraged to think and speak up. I had a passing knowledge of Asian politics before this class but after this class, I feel like I know broadly what is going on in that region. Dr. Kim was so engaging that soon everyone was not afraid to debate about the topics we were discussing that week.
Simply AMAZING professor and class. Dr. Kim is the best professor at Mason bar none. You need to take any class he teaches. While I now have more questions on what and how revolutions start, I feel like I can think and make up my own mind rather than simply accepting what a professor tells me. I thank Dr. Kim's insistence we analyze for this.
First class where the professor actually made the classroom environment good for students to actually speak up and debate. I've had too many professors who paid lip service and expected you to memorize what they said or you didn't do well. I plan to take more classes with this professor. Was never bored through the semester.
Simply amazing professor and educator. First time having Dr. Kim for the Revolutions class but it certainly won't be the last. The whole semester of classes were interactive and Dr. Kim tried and succeeded for the students to get comfortable with the literature and not be afraid to apply it. The final group projects were a BLAST!
As good as an asynchronous class can be. The professor was responsive and always willing to have office hours to explain the material. Grade was based on midterm, final, and short answer essays. Do what's expected and you can't help but get a good grade in the class.
It's not easy for a professor to get students excited about a class, but Dr. Kim got all the students in my Revolutions class to actually look forward to this class even if it was on a Friday afternoon. The seminar format was new since this was the first time I had a class like this.
Lectures with Dr. Kim had me laughing because of his sense of humor. Not only did I learn about IR, I actually enjoyed the semester and had fun with the activities Dr. Kim did during class instead of power pointing us to death. 5/5.
I signed up because of my major requirements and initially just wanted a decent grade but I got ducked into the topic because of the professor. He was so energetic and got all students into asian politics. Lots of participation expected in class so do the reading and speak up.
First professor at Mason who cared about his students and took time to memorize names and faces. He knew so much about the topic and had scenarios, role playing, and other fun activities to reinforce the lessons rather than just lectures. Make sure to show up and attend class since this is important for your grade.
Most fun you can legally have in a class! I learned a lot about asian politics during the semester and was never bored. Dr. Kim really isn't like the typical boring professor. He's funny and smart and caring but he also demands a lot from students. I found him inspiring.
I never would of thought that a class could be fun but this class proved it. Prof truly cared about each student and gave a ton of extra credit. He does have a strict policy that if you have more than 2 unexcused absences then you fail the class but in a way, this helped me show up to each class. Participation is important as its a seminar class.
I never thought I would go a semester without skipping a single class, but it happened. I loved the enthusiasm that Professor Kim had in this Asian politics class. He is really smart in the theories but he also works in international relations so he knows what he is taking about. My favorite part of the class was the final role play of briefing.
Professor Kim only had 7 things that were graded during the entire semester. He gave very vague grading criteria and when I asked for him to elaborate he gave me more vague answers. His slides look like a middle school student made them. He provided a midterm study guide day of and never made a final review guide. No effort from him.
I teared up on the last day of class when I went to say goodbye to Professor Kim. I am graduating tomorrow and he has been so important in my development as a political science major since I took my first class with him as a freshman. I did not have a major then but that first class made me choose politics and this last 322 class closed the loop!
Professor Kim is an expert in international politics. Participation ensures success in this class. If you're not inclined to contribute much to discussions, you may find it challenging. Grading system, reliant on a few assessments, may create uncertainty. Nevertheless, Prof Kim is invested in getting to know you and fosters a friendly atmosphere.
I didn't know what I could do with a politics degree but after taking this class, I realized I wanted to be like him. He makes what could be boring dry theories come alive with real world exams. Understanding prof and gives extra credit and curves generously in final grading.
I'm glad the first political science class I had was this one with Prof. Kim. He knows his stuff and explained the material in an easy to understand way with funny examples from the real world and his professional experience working in the field. I was touched Prof Kim memorized the names and faces and details of every student in class and cared.
I can't compliment the class or Prof Kim enough. He is the first teacher that I've had a mason that is passionate and knowledgeable about the material but also cared personally for the students. He memorized the names and faces and details of every student and encouraged us to get involved in the class.
Class was fun and the professor was really kind. Not many assignments for grades so make sure you keep up with readings and go to class to get good scores on everything. Professor gives tons of extra credit if you show you care and want to learn. Attendance is important so make sure you don't miss more than two classes or you might fail.
Dr. Kim can make an arts major interested in international relations. I'd know since that is me. He is very energetic and engaging and wants to get to know his students as well as teaching them. I can't say I am an expert in politics after this class but I at least now know what is going on.
You can't help but do well in this course if you do the readings, show up, and participate. Dr. Kim makes the class fun and low pressure so by the end of the semester, everyone was speaking and debating the issues. 5 stars.
Took the Asian politics course during the summer and had a great time. I'm not a political science major but Dr. Kim made the topic simple and easy to understand. Course has lots of participation so make sure to come to class prepared. Was a small class and everyone did well so the prof canceled the exam!
I could tell Professor Kim cared about the class and students. He went out of his way to make sure even students who weren't government majors understood what was going on and encouraged shy people to speak up. Participation and speaking up is important for a good grade so make sure to do the readings, attend, and say something smart every class.
If you're expecting a clasd where you do minimal effort and get a decent grade, this isn't it. Dr. Kim makes you think and challenges assumptions. I found where he argued as the devils advocate for the unpopular position to be the most interesting. Eventually we all got in on the act of arguing for something we didn't necessarily agree with.
Professor Kim brings energy and engagement to the classroom. His teaching style makes a dry subject like international relations captivating. Attending class is a must, but the interactive activities and real-world examples make it worthwhile. For extra study help, I found unstuck study AI and the course textbook to be invaluable.
Dr. Kim is a compelling lecturer that makes you want to come to class. He explains things with humor that didn't leave me bored in class. I particularly loved the final project in which we roleplayed as briefers for the government on topics of national security concern.
He is a very good professor. His class is tough and is a lot of reading. He requires you to analyze situations and then do a mock presentation that mimics real-life situations. Attendance is mandatory. His classes are lecture-based, but his lectures are very interesting ,and he incorporates humor in his lectures.
top 10 professors at GMU, if you want a good grade, show up, do the readings and you'll be fine. I wouldn't say it's an easy A, but Dr. Kim makes class fun.
Professor Kim's Politics of Asia class has to be one of the best classes I've taken at GMU. He encourages participation and remembers everyone's name and face within the first few weeks. I'm not one to talk much in class, but I felt very comfortable sharing my thoughts by the end. I could not recommend him enough!
Best professor I've ever had at Mason. He takes the time to get to know the students even when the class if large. Participation is important so make sure you come prepared to class and speak a bit about the week's topic so you are on the prof's radar. Material isn't difficult if you pay attention and put in effort.
I wish all Mason professors were like Professor Kim. This course was interactive and I didn't get lectured at. The group works, role playing, and scenarios brought the readings to life. Everyone needs to take this class.
Most fun you can have in a class and still consider it school! Dr. Kim's Revolutions class was very hands on and we applied what we read in the readings to situations and scenarios. No exams, just 4 short papers, final paper, and a final project. Loved the final project since creativity was encouraged.
Professor Kim is a great lecturer who manages to keep his students engaged. He swears like a sailor and is irreverent in his humor. He'll respect you if you show up, ask questions, and participate in class. Assignments are few but heavy in weight but he's more than willing to curve them. If you have the opportunity to take his class for credit, do!
Just lectures. Very casual speaker and lectures are entertaining at times. Just record the class and take notes on your own time. Notes are posted on BB before the exams. 2 exams and 1 group project.
Lecture heavy course so come to class and pay attention. I am not a government major and took this as an elective but I came out with an A. Final project was different and fun.
dr. kim's class is lecture heavy, but he makes them interesting by using humor and real world examples for students to better understand course content. i didn't feel that the tests properly reflected neither the textbook nor his lectures, so background knowledge on international relations and western history is necessary to pass his tests.
It's possible to have fun and learn in a class. Dr. Kim is energetic, knowledgeable, and obviously happy to be teaching students. Thought I knew what revolutions were before going to this class, but I came out now not so sure on an easy definition but much smarter on how this topic is more complicated that I thought.
After many so-so political science classes at Mason, I am so glad I signed up for a class with Professor Kim. From the start, the class was different because the professor was more interested in us knowing and applying the concepts rather than memorizing for a test. Participation is vital because the class is in seminar format.
The discussions made this course! Dr. Kim expects you to have done the readings before class so he won't rehash the readings. Instead he will add context and give examples and expects you to contribute. He will sometimes cold call students so make sure you read and don't try to fake it if called upon. He is a merciful grader if you show you care.
Straightforward class without dreadful busywork. Lectures were interesting and actually fun. Make sure to do readings and not just depend on lectures and slides for the exams since questions come from the books too. Participation is important so show up to class and speak up. It's important the professor remembers you.
You haven't experienced what a college class is suppose to be unless you've taken a class with Dr. Kim. He is smart, funny, knows the material inside out, and actually cares about his students. Never had a professor who knew each student on sight by name. Come to class, read, and participate and the midterm and final project will be a breeze.
Never had a class I looked forward to coming to until I took Revolutions with Professor Kim. He thinks it's more important that students understand the material and can apply it rather than memorizing and repeating stuff back. No tests but papers and a final group project. Make sure not to skip class because participation is a big part of the grade
Appreciated how Dr. Kim blends theory and real world practices for this class. He keeps your attention throughout the semester and encourages students to work together so by the end I made good friends from the course. Class has one midterm, presentation, and final group project so no filler work.
Fun class that makes you think. No tests but there are 4 short papers and a final group project. Professor likes students to participate in the class so make sure to read and attend class otherwise he'll notice and participation is a big part of the grade. Easy to do well if you do what the professor lays out in the first class.
Taking the class now and I am excited to go to the State Dept to present the results of our project on energy development in Africa. Looked like the trip to State was canceled because of the cancelation of all foreign aid but Dr. Kim came through and arranged a different way for us to go. If you have to take gov 400, take it with Dr. Kim.
Highly recommend this class with Dr. Kim. Can't go wrong with any class he teaches by the way.
Never a dull moment in this class. Dr. Kim believes in putting book material into practice. We had scenarios, roleplaying, and other activities to experience what revolutions are and how they come to be. Thankfully no tests but there are four short essays, final paper, and group project. Dr. Kim likes creativity so make the group project memorable.
I'm not a politics major but the professor and the TA did an awesome job making the topic understandable and enjoyable even for a non gov major. Only one midterm, some presentations, and participation make up the grade. Last class was for the final group project and it was really fun to see all the creative ideas that groups had.
Finishing up my time at Mason by taking the Diplomacy Lab class with Dr. Kim was the best decisions ever. The class went to the State Dept to present to actual practitioners who were genuinely interested in our results. Dr. Kim drilled us through the semester and the trip and presentation made it worth it.
There are many sessions of Diplomacy Lab but make sure to take it with Dr. K! He not only teaches the class but he also works at the State Dept so he was able to get us an opportunity to present there when other schools weren't able to this year because the program was on, off, and then suddenly on again.
Felt like Prof Kim truly wanted us to succeed in our presentation. He had high standards and was tough on us, particularly in analyzing and speaking, but it was all worth it when we presented at the State Department. Prof Kim's coworkers were really interested in what we had to say and didn't just ask softball questions. Take this class with Kim!
This is the first class where a professor took the time to memorize students names and details about them. This made lecture fun but watch out if you didn't do the reading! Prof will call you out by name.
if you're taking this class for global affairs, prepare yourself. multiple choice exams make up majority of your grade and have trick questions or mention topics not discussed in class. lecture lacks care and sensitivity when discussing topics such as marginalization/colonization.
I went into this class without much knowledge of Asia but came out with enough knowledge to talk intelligently about the region and its politics. Class is based on participation and projects and the professor will call on you so do the work and speak up.
Amazing prof with irreverent humor. You will learn and have fun doing so. Final briefing project was different and challenging but ultimately rewarding.
Great lectures and sense of humor throughout the class. Professor Kim is understanding of students and truly works to make sure everyone undersatnds the material. No dull moments
This class with Dr. Kim was hands down the best class I've taken at Mason. Even when the Diplomacy Lab Program was paused at the State Dept, Dr. Kim got us in to present the findings of our topic to the people at State who needed it the most. This isn't an easy A class but you'll do well if you put in the work and show you care.
Not an easy A with open book exams but if you do the work and attend the lectures, you'll do well and learn about international relations and how foreign policy actually works. Grades on two tests, final project, and attendance so don't skip any assignment.
Very enjoyable class with lectures not just academic. Dr. Kim gave many examples that made the theories relatable and fun. Final project was challenging but fun.
So glad I took the revolutions class with Dr. Kim since the US is going nuts politically at the moment. I understand that's happening so much better after this course. Dr. Kim plus is incredibly smart and thinks of creative way to make the course info fun. Take his class!
Never a dull moment with Dr. Kim. He detests boring lectures so he teaches my scenarios, games, and application exercises. He expects you to have done the readings so make sure to know the material before coming to class. After that, buckle up!
Took Diplomacy Lab with Dr. Kim and I loved how he didn't make this just a research class. He taught us what national security is for the US and drilled us how to professionally brief. Class culminated in a trip to the State Dept where we briefed the Energy Resources Bureau of our findings. The trip made the class!
