Very easy to understand but makes you think. No written HW, only reading. likes to pick on students who don't pay attention. A couple exams and participation/attendance makes up the whole grade. probably the best teacher I had all semester.
One of the best profs I've had NOVA so far. Teaches from more than book and doesn't drone on and on like some teachers here.
kept me on my toes. was an 8 am class but i kept coming just to hear the jokes and funny stories used to explain the concepts in the class.
Fantastic teacher! Easy to understand, knows material very well, passionate about helping his students..over all an excellent choice! IF you don't pick him, then you're missing out BIG TIME :) Go Professor Kim!!
Had no interest or knowledge in politics before i took thus class. The prof made things clear and simple.
I feel like this professor means well and he is an intelligent person, but he is a terrible educator. Professor Kim's lectures are vague and confusing. He tells you not to "kill yourself" taking notes since he puts his power points on black board, but they are completely useless and do nothing to prepare you for his exams.
He's probably the only good Poli Sci teacher at Annandale. He's funny, young, and will help you understand things. His tests are not easy and they are based off the book. Make sure you do the readings because he posts them up last minute. Other than that the class was fun.
This professor is smart and quick, even though I did have some issues throughout the duration of the class, he was always very helpful, and did everything in his power to remedy the situation. He really has a passion for Politics and teaching and I think he makes a great professor.
good teacher overall
Liked the professor and the class so much that I am going to take every class he teaches until I transfer!
like this prof. most laid back class so far at nova i have taken. still learned a lot.
took this class cause the session taught by another prof was so bad. liked this prof much more. enjoyed the jokes used to explain things. would recoommend.
This professor is no slouch. He is quick and funny and takes his time to explain the difficult concepts about this topic. Takes the time to help you out if you ask. Much enjoyed!
No busy work. Just lectures and two tests. Come to class, participate, and study and you will be fine.
I have been frankly disappointed with all the professors I have had at Nova up until I took this class. Gives me hope for this school.
AWESOME!
I wish this prof would teach more classes at Alexandria. Clear and eloquent and doesn't waste his or the students' time. I would take the classes he teaches at Annandale but it is a bit out of the way for me.
suppose to be 3 hour class but prof usually finishes in 2. best 2 hours of any class i have taken at this school!
I really like how this professor talks with this class and not at them. I have had too many professors just stay at the podium and lecture and just talk. One person even just read from the book! Thank goodness this professor doesn't waste our time and money like that. I can read too!!!
AMAZING!! should take his class! Makes the class interesting... 2 multiple choice exams and 1 extra credit paper, STUDY FROM THE BOOK!
SUPER FUNNY! made class interesting to learn. helpful but slow at responding emails or never at all! only grades on midterm, final & extra credit essay. pay attention to little details for a good grade (use textbook & his slideshows) but overall for my first semester, really enjoyed his teaching!
Just coming out of the military and I enjoyed how this professor applied theories to the events that I experienced on deployments.
I am going to miss this professor. Come to class, read the book and pay attention and you will do well. Don't fall asleep in class though! He delights in calling out those students or those who aren't prepared!
As someone who works at the State Dept., he is very knowledgable about the world around us.He's Hilarious and colorful, but he puts a heavy emphasis on lecture over the book. I'd take his class again. A+
One of the best professors at NVCC. More like a Mason professor. Learned a ton that helped me when I went to Mason. I highly recommend his class.
I liked this prof's class a lot so I asked him to write me a recommendation to my transfer school. I am at Mason now and my major is politics now because of this prof. You are losing out if you don't take at least one class with this prof!
This professor saved me from dropping my PLS focus at Nova! I had been so disappointed with other instructors in the department that I was considering changing my major because I found PLS so boring! This professor was a breath of fresh air. Much recommended and appreciated!
Best professor at nova
Taking the IR class now and I am pleased with the lectures and class.
I am the first person in my family to go beyond high school. I didn't know what I wanted to major in when I started here but taking professor kim's class helped me decide on political science. I have one more semester before I transfer to gmu and I continue to take as many classes as I can with this prof.
Straight shooter and gets to the point in the lecture. Makes it interesting too and he didn't leave me checking my watch every 5 minutes.
Great teacher and a nice guy too. He gave me good advice on how to pursue my major and some career suggestions. Much better than the adviser I was assigned by the school
I took this class last semester and it was the best course I took in a while at this school. Maybe the best instructor at this school. I hope he doesn't leave.
I learned more in two hours in this class with this professor in a 8 week session than I did in other full semester courses I have taken here.
I took this class after being away from school for a while. I learned so much from this class and professor.
I love how this professor blends the theory with current events and relevant examples. The examples especially helps me understand the material because I don't have the background in this subject. I wish there were more classes I can take with this professor. His lectures are lively and entertaining and I found myself not yawning.
I went to this professor Kim for major and career advice because I was totally clueless on what to do and the career counselors were worse than useless. I know he is busy but he took time out of his work schedule to meet with me as many times as I needed. This is the first time a professor has done this for me. I can't thank him enough!
Definitely kept my attention all semester. Explained things clearly in a manner that was easy to understand. Would take another course with him but I am transferring to GMU next semester.
This class was the best the best one I have taken in my life, bar none. I got advice from the professor and I just got notification that I had been accepted into a federal internship program!
This class and professor inspired me to major in politics. The class was early in the morning, but this professor cheer and goodwill even in the wee hours were inspirational.
Interesting guy! Getting a good grade was a little tough as it was entirely determined by a mid-term and final, as it was an eight-week course. Aside from that though, Prof. Kim is a very lenient grader and oftentimes boosts grades to help his students out. His take on International relations is pretty funny, and definitely keeps your attention!
I loved the seminar format the professor used in this class. He sat with us in a circle and actually listened to, responded to, and valued our comments in the seminar format class. This was the first time I have experienced a class like this and I was impressed. A warning! Don't come to this class without doing the reading! HE KNOWS!!!
The best professor I have had in my time at nova. He explains everything clearly and without the fuss that a lot of professors here do. I would recommend this class to anyone!
Prof. Kim is one of the best professors I've had. He repeats the materials discussed many times and his lectures are always interesting. He teaches the subject and leaves out the personal bias and opinions that to be fair, students do not care about. I recommend taking his class. He's very funny too.
Awe inspiring. The breadth and depth of Professor Kim's knowledge in International Relations is something to behold. I would recommend this class or this professor to anyone. If you don't take at least one class with this professor when you are at Nova, you are missing out!
Took 120 with Professor Kim before I transferred to GMU. Lectures with this professor prepared me well for Mason so I didn't feel much of a jar when I transferred.
He is a nice guy, knows a lot about the subject he is teaching. I just wish his exams were not as comprehensive. if you are majoring in PlS this could be easy for you. it was an 8 week class. challening to study all the PP which btw was a waste of time. its more of a critical thinking multiple choice exams. so again if its ur thing take him.
Even though this was an online class, Dr. Kim did his best to make his lectures informative and interesting. I especially liked hos he didn't waste time with busy work. If you show up for lecture and do the readings, you'll do well.
Dr. Kim is really passionate about teaching and turned what could easily have been a really boring topic of U.S. government into what was the best political science class I have taken at NOVA so far. He took dry theories and wove in his experiences and research to make fascinating lectures that made me forget this was an online class.
Hands down the best political science professor I have had at this school. Prof Kim is incredibly knowledgeable about US politics and can explain it to students with examples that made sense to us. He also listened to and valued students opinions and was always willing to answer questions. You're missing out if you don't take this class with him.
Really enjoyed the class even though it was through Zoom. The professor was enthusiastic and he chose topics about the US gov that were the most important and he delivered the lecture that educated us and also kept our intention. One thing. Make sure to attend the lectures because questions come from them so don't skip class!
Loved Dr. Kim so much! He helped changed what I thought would be a boring dreary class that I needed for my major into an exciting and informative class. His lectures were always lively and the Dr. Kim was so enthused by the topic. Also very understanding prof and generous with extra credit if you want.
Professor Kim was my first college professor and he has become the criteria that I will judge all professors on now. He was so knowledgeable about US government and politics and could connect things to current events and made everything interesting to boot. Make sure to take at least one class with this professor. Plus, he is a kind grader!
I never knew or had much interest in US government and at first only signed up because it was a requirement for my major. I came out of this class so much better informed and aware of how US politics affect my life. Professor Kim is a great professor and lecturer who cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Plus, he gives extra credit!
The most enjoyable and genuine professor I have ever had. Professor Kim made American government not only easily understandable with his examples and stories, he also made students want to come to class. The free discussions we had in class with the best part of the course. Make sure to read the book and the slides and you'll get a good grade too.
The professor is charismatic as all! He kept my and other students' attention all semester even through an online format. He also has the ability to take dense and confusing topics and boil it down to the most important info and also delivered it with humor and funny stories. Grades are based on a few things so keep up with the readings.
Taking this international relations course with Professor Kim was the best decision ever. Prof Kim's lectures were incredibly attention keeping and you learn the topic so naturally and effortlessly that the class doesn't feel like a class and more of a fun conversation with an expert on the topic. Plus, Prof Kim respects his students.
Came to get credit for my polisci major but stayed because the lectures and professor was stupendous. Never knew I could learn so much about international relations in such a short time and also enjoyed learning about the topic. Take every class you can with this prof. Go Dr. Kim!
Professor Kim is a great lecturer. He kept my interest during the entire semester. Unfortunately, 70% of the grade was determined by two exams. No one received an A prior to the curve. Many of the details on the exam felt more like trivia than an intro-level course.
Best lectures I have had at any course in Nova. Exams were fair if you keep up with readings, take good notes in lecture, and don't expect everything on the test to be told you beforehand and spoonfed to you. This is college and not high school after all. Prof is merciful on the curved final grades.
I loved how Dr. Kim used so many relevant real world examples from current events and his professional experiences to show the complex nature of international conflicts and what seemed so simple at first was actually quite complicated. I got smart in politics and now don't see things happening in the world with such simple opinions. Recommended!
Dont let no assignments and quizzes food you. He only does mid-term and a final. which you would be told is gonna be easy and fair. BUT IT WILL NOT BE.
I didn't pay attention to american gov in high school so all the material in this class was new to me. Profs lectures were fun and material was presented at a reasonable pace. If you do readings and put in effort in the class, you'll get a good grade
Best professor at Nova by far. Lectures were fun and relevant and far from boring. Grades were based on two tests, participation, and a group paper. Do what you're expected to do and you'll learn and get a good grade while having as much fun as a class can be.
Participation is really important with this professor so make sure you attend class and speak smart things often. Lectures were incredible and relevant to current events and the professor was humorous as all. Class was a three hour block but I didn't know time was passing. Thoroughly enjoyed the class and the professor.
I am taking a 6 week online course of his and his class is based on two test and his slides and lecture recordings arent as helpful as they should be and he does do curves and gives extra credit but I would recommend avoiding his class especially if you arent a good test taker and are better at keeping up on homework
Wish I could take more classes with this professor. He made international relations fun and easily understandable. Tests were fair and essays were easy to do well on if you put in effort. Take this class.
Class and material are easy and the prof is chill. I kept up with readings and attended lectures and did well on the exams. prof is really generous with the curve so came out with an A. Take 135 with this prof. He doesn't waste time or give nonsense busy work.
Not only a great professor and good lecturer, the professor was a caring human being. I had some issues going on in my life and sometimes couldn't make the lectures and had to turn in stuff late. The professor understood and worked with me and gave me and the class extra credit assignments and tried to grade as generously as possible.
I didn't believe any professor could make an almost 3 hour chunk of lecture time on international relations not only informative but fun as well. I loved how the professor used his extensive work experiences to explain the theories that we learned in class. I always looked forward to sessions of this class. Guess that's why I did well in the class.
The class and professor were so amazing that I decided to major in polisci. The prof's enthusiasm for the class and topic is infectious. Take take take this course with this professor.
Professor Kim is so knowledgeable about conflicts in the world and gives up the scoop on the history of these events. He used his professional experiences to help us think of ways these conflicts can be hopefully resolved. You can see he really cares about this topic and it comes through in lecture and motivated students to become active in class.
Dr. Kim is hands down the best professor I have ever had in my life. He made international relations, a topic that is not my major, into a topic that I am now fascinated about. I am even thinking of changing my major now. The class is online but Dr. Kim created a student community where we were all excited to learn together.
Inspirational professor who's lectures are something to behold. Dr. Kim somehow manages to pack his lectures with so much relevant information but keeps it fun and straight to the point. The final paper was actually kind of fun to write. He also is very forgiving in the curves for the grades and gives many extra credit opportunities.
I liked how this class did not have endless busy work that many professors at NOVA like to give. Grades were clear and based on a midterm, final, and paper. If you do the readings and try to understand the material rather than memorize, tests were not hard. Plus Dr. Kim's lectures were the best I have ever had and kept my attention all semester.
I didn't know what i wanted to major in but this class and professor kim made me decide to be a political science major. The prof was so knowledgeable and engaging as a teacher. He was so nice to give me career and major advice too.
Loved my class with Dr. Kim. He is so smart about international relations and he explained it so clearly and simply that everyone could understand it. Plus, he was so kind and caring and the class all agreed that he genuinely cared about us as people. I hope more professors are like him when I transfer to GMU.
I felt Professor Kim cared about the students truly and not only taught us international relations but also was a mentor to us. He took time out of his day to help me with internship and transfer applications. Wished more professors were like him.
Best professor with awesome lectures. If you are a polisci major, you have to take this class with Professor Kim. Even though this was an evening online class, I went to every class because the class taught me something new each time.
Wonderful professor who made the lectures fun. I learned a lot about international relations and it was amazing the professor tied in the theories into current world events like the the Russia-Ukraine war. Plan to take this professor's classes when I transfer to Mason.
Dr. Kim makes the class material easy to understand and lectures with great humor and enthusiasm. No dreary busy work that other profs love giving, just midterm and final and group paper. Overall enjoyable class with manageable readings and course requirements.
He's definitely a nice professor, however you're only graded by three things: midterm, final, and a group paper. Lectures were ok, nothing that really stood out. He does not grade quickly either. By prepared to not know your final grade until who knows when.
Rare professor who tries to teach students how to think rather than forcing students to think a certain way. Enjoyed the discussions in class from questions posed by the professor. Professor was available for office hours on questions about anything to do with international relations. I took advantage of this part and valued these chats the most.
Great Professor! Good personality and lectures are enjoyable. Keep in mind however, there are only 3 major assignments and nothing else, 2 exams and 1 project/essay. If you pay attention, participate and study enough you should pass this class with flying colors. Even if you don't contribute much you will still pass.
Most enjoyable class and professor I've taken at Nova. Keep up with the readings and show up for the lectures and you'll do well. Make sure to speak up and often in lecture so the professor knows your name and face. He values active participation a lot. Test (2 of them) and a paper were a breeze if you plan and study diligently.
The only class I enjoyed in my political science major. Dr. Kim is hilarious and conveys information that is easy to understand. He was also so encouraging and wrote recommendations for me so I could transfer to gmu.
Smart professor and caring person. Dr. Kim cared about his students and went out of his way to set up time to explain concepts. I asked him to write several transfer recommendations for me and I will be going to GMU next semester. Plan to take Dr. Kim's class when I transfer.
I took this class with Prof Kim at first just to complete a general requirement but the class was so interesting that I changed my major to political science. If you do the readings and pay attention in lectures (professor notices if you don't attend and participate) you'll be ok. Class assignments were graded on a generous curve so was thankful.
I am not a political science major so I was unsure if I would do well in this class but I was very pleasantry surprised at the end when I ended up with an A. I learned a lot about international relations and while I am still not an expert, I feel like I am now more connected with world events. Dr. Kim is the best professor ever and so nice.
I am sad that this is the last class I will have Prof Kim. I took my first politics class with him and was hooked and now end my time at nova with this international politics class. If you show up for class and do the readings and put in effort, I don't know how anyone can do badly. Plus, Dr. Kim grades with a nice curve and in understanding.
Prof. Kim gives good lectures, but his class overall wasn't too enjoyable for me. He only grades with three things (midterm test, group project paper, final test). I wouldn't recommend if you prefer more assignments to better understand and keep up with material.
I found Dr. Kim's class straightforward. Readings were a manageable amount and not dense or boring. Grade requirements were few with midterm, final, and group final paper. Found the lectures really interesting and the professor was really energetic. If you're the type that doesn't want endless busy work assignments, this is the class.
I admit I slacked off and didn't do well on the first exam but once I reached out to Dr. Kim and showed how I wanted to do better in this class, he gave me extra credit opportunities to show him I knew the material and was serious. I did better on the final and was between a B and A but I was pleasantry surprised to get an A!
I chose political science as my major because of this class and Professor Kim! I didn't know what I wanted to focus on when I started nova and was a general studies major, but the lectures were so interesting and Professor Kim was so encouraging to students that I want to pursue politics as a major and later on as a career.
I love how Professor Kim lectures. He made the American politics material understandable and also fun. I am not a political science major but even I could understand it without too much difficulty. I am a returning student so I needed guidance on how to proceed and Professor Kim was so kind to meet with me repeatedly.
I took this class for summer transfer credit back to my home college and expected it to be a slog but the class was entirely not that. Professor made US government come alive and I was never bored during the six week session. Class and instructor were better than ones at UVA.
First professor I've had who was an expert in the topic and could effectively teach it. Too many professors here know the course but can't transmit to students. This professor helped me decide to major in political science.
You can't help doing well if you do what the professor expects. Show up for class, do the readings, participate, and show you care about the class and the professor will work with you. I don't think anyone failed in the class. Not an easy A but you get the grade you worked for.
Rare professor who encourages students to participate in class rather than just lecturing at them. The professor asked questions and encouraged vigorous debate between students and himself. Wish he taught more politics classes that I could take.
Folks, every nova student needs to take at least one class with Dr. Kim! This isn't a class where you can log in and goof off with the camera off. Dr. Kim has an interactive lecture style and will ask questions to the class. Students were a little taken aback at first but soon everyone got into it. You'll learn a lot and have fun.
Smart professor but also nicest person imaginable. Dr. Kim cares that his students learn and isn't a stickler on grading. Take this class even if you aren't a polisci major!
Great class.
Prof. Kim's PLS241 class was a highlight of my college experience. His engaging lectures and passion for the subject matter made the course genuinely interesting, even for a non-poli sci major like myself. I found Unstuck ai and the textbook to be great study aids that complemented the material well.
Can't go wrong with any class Professor Kim teaches. I have had him for PLS 132 and most recently 241. Lectures were easy to follow and Professor Kim teaches in a way that everyone can understand. Grades are based on midterm, final, attendance, and final project. He is kind in curving if you do the work.
Lectures were actually fun. Dr. Kim uses lots of examples and experiences to explain the material so it keeps the material from getting boring. Grades based on midterm, finals, and participation so make sure to read and attend lectures. 5/5!
Smart professor with a heart. He knows all about international relations and his lectures are amazing. He curves grades generously as long as the class shows they care and are trying.
Fun class with nice professor. Not many grades so make sure to study and prepare for the exams.
Was a little surprised that the professor didn't have little assignments every week like other nova professors but I got us to it. Course is graded on two tests, final paper, and participation. Generous extra credit is available so it you put in effort during the semester, you can pull out an A with the extra credit.
Avoid at all costs, this class had three assignments. which might sound good but if you doon't already know everything you going to need to learn it yourself. for example, two of those assignments will be exams 40+ plus qustions that will cover half the book if you don't like tests or even to bad on one your cooked. also if you miss 2 class = fail.
No nonsense straightforward class. Doesn't have many busy work assignments so it's important to attend every lecture, ask questions, and study to get a good grade. Grade is based on midterm, final, and participation. Didn't find it hard to get an A if you put in the effort and have a brain.
Fun class with an energetic professor who could explain the topic easily and clearly to non political science majors like me. I understood the material but I'm not good at tests so the professor met with me and gave an alternate way to show I understood the material. Ended up getting an A. One of the most caring professors I've ever had.
Took this course as a gen requirement but ended up enjoying the class because of the lectures. Not too hard of a lift if you do the readings and show up for class.
Class was easy if you do the readings and come to lectures. Prof was also fun and made the lectures interesting.
First professor in the political science major I enjoyed. Lectures were always full of information and presented in a fun manner. Professor Kim respected and genuinely wanted to hear students' thoughts and was always willing to answer questions. Great class all around.
Prof. Kim was an excellent professor! He made the content fun and relatable. He uses Lockdown Browser+Webcam. Course was graded by the midterm, final, and attendance, but he offered an extra credit class to replace your worst test grade. Be sure to study with both the book and the study guides he provides. Amazing professor!
Make sure to take this class with Dr. Kim! He made international relations understandable for even non political science majors. He offers many ways to show you understand the material for your grade so make sure to put in the effort and you'll do well for grades.
Took this class this summer and while the pace was intense, I loved the class because of the professor. Prof Kim is a fun person who is passionate about what he teaches and gives so many real world examples about world politics. He drops lowest grade and replaces with an extra credit assignment if you do well and show you care.
First prof at NOVA that kept my and the class's attention all semester. Prof Kim knows so much about the topic and cares to actually teach. It's obvious his heart is in teaching. Not many grades, just midterm, final, and paper so make sure you prepare. He grades on a merciful curve so you'll be ok if you show him you are trying your best.
Very bad at communications
