He starts off the semester giving you hope but his tests are very tough. I watched many students fall asleep to his monotoned accented voice. He is smart and knows the material so he will write it out on the board for you to copy. He asks questions on exams similar to the examples in class but manages to ask parts that he never discussed.
Lectures were really unnecessary, only came to class because attendance was taken. All material for exam can be learned by doing HW and reading textbook. Has horrible, monotone lecture style. Material lends itself to discussions about current finance events, but professor prefers to talk about theory. Exams are easy if prepared, no tricks.
Yes, his lectures are somewhat dull, but he is very thorough, structured, and goes through step-by-step examples of the material on the board. Maybe some people prefer textbook examples, but I prefer seeing them done, following along, and being able to ask questions along the way. Lectures were long, but highly effective.
Pretty bad teacher all around. Not clear, boring, tough exams (especially final). You will be thoroughly disappointed...
Monotonous voice puts you right to sleep. Tricky m/c questions. Don't take him over the summer, fall/spring maybe different but he tries to stick with the regular semester schedule & workload in the summer which is too much.
Excellent professor; always prepared and his lectures are clear and logical. Unlike some profs here, concerned with understanding and explaining fundamental purposes of concepts. The tests is easy (took it in the summer) and formula sheets are allowed.
Long lectures with little interaction. Pay attention and take good notes in class as the exams are heavily focused on the class lectures. Multiple choice questions have heavy point weighting, so don't overlook them when you study - by focusing only on problems.
Seemed nice enough - as a person, not too great as a teacher. Many mistakes and VERY SLOW. READ the book!!! You are better off.
I took him over the summer and he takes attendance. His lectures were clear and well organized (though material is boring)- and you can use a double-sided "cheat" sheet for the exams. I basically gave up my 6 weeks of summer to studying and earned an A. No tricks - you just have to study a lot.
Lectures are clear and straigtforward and his tests lean heavily on the class notes so don't miss class or make sure to get the notes from a friend. His tests are fair but not giveaways. You definitely have to study a lot in order to get an A or A-.
passes sheet for attendance. 3tests not****ulative. fair grader, will weigh better test grades more heavier if u speak to him. 1 large cheatsheet. everything comes from class, gives handouts for the questions&answers from textbook. no need to buy book. need to listen in class. fairly easy A. had him for fin 3610 too, easy A
3 tests, cheatsheet for all, easy grader. Take him if you can.
Prof. Murphy is a great professors. I highly reccommend him. You will learn finance, and if you study for the exams, you will get an A.
Highly recommended. You will learn a lot in class as well as solving finance problems. Do never miss a class if you want to get a good grade because his exam are from the note he gave in class. He does not really make mistakes, when he solve the problems on the board, he did arithmetical computation by head or wait for answers from us (calculator)
Highly recommended! You won't be confused in the finance. Finance seems easy with him. This is one of the best professor at Baruch who is well prepared before teaching in class. He is excellent! Take good notes and ask question during and after class when you don't understand and you will get an A. He's willing to help students understand finance.
Very clear lectures. No trick, never asks what he didn't teach. Just study his material and do the assignments which will help to learn better. Very helpful and nice professor. I loved his class. I am just over half way my graduation and so far he is one of the best of two professors I had at Baruch.
Very good professor. 3 tests not cumulative. 1 paper (2 pages). Easy A... ;)
Great professor. Well-informed and insightful. I recommend taking his class.
Prof. Murphy is one of the best professors in this school. You will learn a lot in the class. Highly recommended!!!
GENIUS PURE GENIUS...I WISH ALL THE PROFESSORS WOULD EXPLAIN THE CONTENT IN SUCH AN UNDERSTANDING AND RELEVANT FORMAT.
There should be more professors like Murphy at Baruch! He's very kind and straightforward. As a summer class, this was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. Exams aren't incredibly easy, but very fair.
Very good knowledgable professor. His exams were very fair. He allows a cheat sheet every exam - non cumulative. Only issue I had with him is he allows wayy too many side convos to go on while he teaches, other than that - i think he's very well above average, would recommend!!!
Excellent Professor!!!!!!!!! His way of explanation of the subject matter is very clear and understandable. It was pleasure to be in his class.
Prof. Murphy is great. Knowledgeable and always makes time for his students. Highly recommend him.
Great professor just follow what he says in class and is helpful to attend class even though he doesnt check attendance after few weeks classes began
The professor is not the worst I?ve ever had, but pretty close. He doesn?t answer any questions and seems to get annoyed if anyone interrupts his lecture. He never responded to any email I sent with questions. His exams are okay, as long as you have a good cheat sheet.
Does not use Powerpoint, which is great. Teaches to the point, decipher complex material effectively even in a summer session. Although discussion get sidetracked far off sometimes, the exams are relevant to every lesson. Very flexible instructor, to both schedule, lesson plan, and exam. Curves exam, easy to learn from, very nice guy. Recommended
this class is really hard, it's to be expected cause it's a 4000 lvl course. but this prof. explains really well. as long as you follow him in his lectures and do the problems he assign then you should be fine. i got A in this class with a little work. the course is hard but he made it a little simpler.
Easy exams (allows cheat-sheets). Gives you photocopies of the questions from the book (don't buy it). Doesn't take attendance (though he teaches well, you should attend). Best possible choice for 3610&4610.
I took summer class with this professor. He was extremely helpful, detailed and I gained a lot in a short amount of time. He is very reasonable and I wish he taught a full graduate class. Best professor to choose for the summer class!
Very good professor. Always willing to help his students. Attend class & take notes. Exams were multiple choice & problem solving. For MC write everything he says in class on your cheat sheet, for problem solving read the book for extra clarity. Exams will take nearly 3 hrs to complete. Grades fairly. Great guy.
Not an easy class. Multiple choice questions were tricky. He was a fair grader on the problem solving questions but if you slip up on the multiple choice it can affect your grade immensely. Don't take him lightly. Not a terrible class but working full time and cramming a semesters worth of material into one summer session is not easy.
Not an easy class. Professor knows his stuff but the exams are quite difficult. Some of the multiple choice questions are out of this world. Take good notes, do study guide questions, read the chapters in the textbook, and you should be okay.
Comes from academia, which is clear in his lecture style. Somewhat disorganized at times (misgrades, late) but answers questions eagerly and tries to be generous. 3 exams, 30/35/35%, w 1 pg notes. Gives partial credit on problem solving, but the 15 or so multiple choice qs are poorly worded and can kill your grade. A tough class for summer.
Study for the exams and you'll be fine. Really cool guy.
Good professor, though you won't learn anything useful. He doesn't give any practical examples. Everything is strictly out of the Study guide.
Prof. Murphy is a good professor; he takes time to explain the material in great detail. He doesn’t give any practical real life examples. I think he’s a fair professor and grader. 3 tests 30%/35%/35%. The first test was unusually hard but the 2nd test and final were reasonable. I would recommend.
Pretty cool guy. His exams are based on what he says in class and the problems he assigns. During exams, there's someone getting up to use the bathroom or ask questions EVERY SINGLE MINUTE, never seen something like that. It's annoying and disruptive, but he entertains them all with the utmost calm.
An amazing professor, the best finance professor at Baruch without a doubt. He explains every concept so well and goes at a fair pace so that everyone will understand. The first two exams are easy and fair if you study. The final was a bit hard, but definitely doable.
Best finance class. Best finance teacher. He is not consumed in teaching material as the prof, but he understands the students, how hard we work (full time jobs in the city)and helps us at every step along the way. Exams are very straightforward, just attend class. Read the chapters and pay attention to his helpful handouts: You can get an A.
Professor Murphy's ensured that students were not only prepared for the exams but his method of teaching enables retention of concepts such that students are able to succeed with majors in the field. I highly recommend students to take his class rather than other professors who really don't care about proper instruction.
Best Prof. EVER!
Wonderful Professor!
SAVE YOURSELF!!!!! Do not take him. He confuses you with the material and his grading policies change after exam grades are given. Ruined my GPA and I had a 3.83! The class can be confusing but he does not help. He is nice but STAY AWAY!
Great Professor. Don't need the textbook but will need the study guide. He writes everything you need to know for his exams on the board. As long as you write everything down, you will have everything you need for the exam. Nice guy and not too difficult. Class consists of 3 exams and group project assigned by the Fin dept. Would strongly recommend
Finally got my grades back. His class was terrible because it was not clear, no guidance in any way, no reviews, no grade changes to mistakes he made. STAY AWAY!
You're better off with someone else! He isn't clear and he rushes through material. This is one of the harder classes in Zicklin so you're better off taking someone else!
Great Professor. Had a great sense of humor and taught fairly well. Everything you need to know for the exam he wrote on the board and gave out handouts to do problems so you don't have to buy the book which is great. Cheat sheet allowed on exams, multiple choice a bit tricky but doable. A lot of material to cover during the summer but worth it.
I really thought that this class wouldn't be so difficult considering we took 3610, but this man takes finance to another level. He's extremely tricky with his wording on the exams, barely learned anything from the lectures (and textbook wasn't used much for questions on exams). I'd stay away!!
really tough professor, tough grader.
taking him now, not sure if will pass, on the midterm mean was 60%
Prof goes over homeworkproblems every class. There was 3 exams, 3 chapters to study per test, and 50 Multiple choice questions per test, but the Final (3rd exam) had 60 questions. The book is important to study do the problems and to read chapters, reading each chapter and understanding is very important for exams.
Not an easy professor. I think he might be easy for graduate class but not for undergrad. Take him if you want to lower your GPA.
If you want to learn and get real world experience, then this is the guy NOT to take. Very smart guy just not a good teacher. The worst professor in Baruch.
I took the summer session, highly recommend not taking this professor. He doesn't really care if you understand the material or not. If you ask a question, he makes you feel stupid as if you were not paying attention.
he does it read what is in the book back to you. Even the powerpoints are from the books website. If you ask a question or give the wrong answer he makes you feel like a fool. Found the class boring and only went because he takes attendance.
I worked hard in the class and got a grade of D+. He gives 2 midterms and 1 final. His exams are really hard. And he gives a lot of material to study. For the final we had to know 16 chapters. There was no way I could have read all the chapters. Stay away from this professor. All exams are mc.
His exams are straight forward, there were no trick questions whatsoever. You must practice and do the assigned homework to understand what he taught in class. The class wasn't as hard as others said it would be. Expect to teach yourself and not be lazy, you probably won't do good in class if you skipped or didn't practice the homework questions.
The worst professor I ever had in college. I took him in the summer, he gave out only two exams and took the average of them as your final grade. Sounds fair, but he had no clues what he taught. Always made mistakes with the formulas, all he was been telling us was not to worry about the exams, and there is no such curve.
Straight forward class, 2 exams 1 final, equally weighted/ non cumulative. Good lecturer, didn't rely on ppt. No hw, however, he posts a lot of chapter resources on blackboard. This class was very easy so long as you read the chapters prior to the exam and go over the practice questions he provides. multiple choice with 3-4 short answer questions.
I initially thought this class would be way more difficult but prof knows his field and gives very simple tests ([email protected]% each). he tells you exactly what to study and gives you an 8x11 paper to fill with whatever you want. He seems to be very lenient with grading and as long as you do some studying on your own, this class will be an easy B
there is no doubt he is a good person writes everything on board. But this class is not easy A. Even he gives us on cheat sheet on exam. But he makes multiple choices tricky. So you still have to work hard. I agree people said this class this easy B. But if you want a very good grade, I do not recommend. Tricky class!
Thank god he teaches 4710. He only teaches on Saturday but suck it up bc hes one of the easiest professors in finance with lectures that make concepts easy to understand. Softball MC questions. Generous curve on short answers. Study the handout problems he gives in class + fill your cheat sheet with notes and you will walk away with atleast a B
I can confidently say that Dr. Murphy was the best finance professor at Baruch. I took him twice and never regretted. First, his exams are based solely on the material he covers in class, no surprises. Two, he knew the answer to every question I asked, unlike other professors. Three, he structures the class for you to learn, not to fail you. GREAT!
Not only is his teaching clear as day and his exams fair, but every class session always seemed to be filled with laughter and good times. This guy is a gem. 5/5
This was a terrible class. I took it in the summer and he posted videos on material a day before the test. He didnt answer any questions by email. Tests are 50% MC and usually 50% 2 very hard short answers and if you get one wrong youre grade falls significantly. He doesnt give partial credit.
Cons: Hes a horrible grader- he had 3 HW papers - everyone in the class got half credit on them and he didnt care. Tests are very tricky and he grades to the point. Impossible A (I knew 6 kids and highest was B+). He doesnt respond to emails. Pros: Not the heaviest workload and class was asynchronous once COVID started
His tests do not match what he teaches- its heavily numerical and he teaches the concept. No extra credit or curve.
He was a great professor! 3 exams and 1 paper. He gives hw but its not graded so thats nice. Provides u with HW answer key and step by step solution great for exam prep! His exams were pretty straightforward just look over the hw questions. His lectures were in depth and he's always accessible outside class.
Probably one of the better finance teachers, homework isn't graded & mirrors questions on the exams. Study the homework and you'll be good. The only con about this guy is that since it was an online class he made his multiple choice questions worth 1 point and his short answers worth 20 points each. If you bomb his short answers you won't do well.
This man is the greatest Finance Professor at Baruch. Only graded on tests, huge curves, and most importantly he actually teaches the concepts. Most professors at Baruch just make you teach yourself with connect but he actually teaches the class and TESTS YOU ON THE CONCEPTS!!! NOT JUST ENDLESS FORMULAS!!! The best professor for finance TAKE HIM!
He's the nicest guy! Won't spoon feed you but as long as the class participates he will come pretty close to it. Tests aren't a breeze but they are straightforward and resemble the homeoworks. You can definitely get an A if you put in the effort
He's a chiller. Lectures are entertaining, funny guy, and I am even getting a letter of recommendation from him. My only complaint is that he is not teaching more classes at Baruch because I'd take him for my whole schedule
If y'all can put up with his ego then he's your man for sure. Tells alot of stories about his time in the industry which are interesting but come off as arrogant since he's pretty accomplished. If you can put with that though his class is a breeze and you gotta do basic studying. I would recommend, valid prof
So funny it is insane. At times you will wonder if you are in a finance class or SNL. don't let that fool you though, tests are decently hard and you will have to study, they are no joke! If you try hard and don't try to coast you will do well
I was taking the first exam, he ran out of copies and allowed the late student to take pictures of my exam. Lectures the entire class and is unorganized with the whole course. 3 Exams 33.33% each, weighed heavily on examples done in class. Insane curves on exams due to his questionable teaching and knowledge on the material. From a concerned Senior
He's not that good but ain't that bad either. Just read his notes and content he puts up on blackboard. Understand the study guides inside out and you can get an A. He has 3 tests worth 33.33%. His lectures very mid. A good man though as he allows a cheat sheet
I did not learn anything from this man's lectures. Everything I know about international finance was from reading the textbook myself and from FIN 4610's international chapter. Exams are also nothing like the study guide he provides. Despite that, he's super easy going, disorganized, and gives a super generous curve.
This is the best Professor I have ever had! Very inspiring and caring! I learned a lot not only from the textbook but his lectures. I will definitely choose him again! Thanks Professor Murphy!
He was super boring. Luckily he curved all the exams very heavily. I took him on Saturdays for 3 hours. You don't have to attend class, just show up for attendance and leave early. Study his sheets and reviews and you should be fine.
as the student who got 100 for all the exams, here's the tips. read the textbook, because there's gonna be problems on the test that he doesn't mention or teach during lecture. The curve is huge. I didn't study at all because it is literally a review of fin3000. btw he's super chill and nice. one of the best professors at baruch.
the class was graded on 3 exams. no attendance or HW. I only went to class for exams and was able to effectively study with just his notes. Notes were easy to understand
It's difficult to rate professors like this. As other reviews say, it's only graded on 3 exams with no homework or participation grade. Optional attendance, but if you don't go, tests are impossible. Curves well but cannot be reached outside of class and does not use any online platforms well.
