Tests are extremly difficult, but he has nice curves. Don't expect too much from lectures, mainly rely on the texts.
The reason I gave up pre-med
i dropped my major b/c of him. he is the absolute worst teacher ever!!! my friends tried to warn me but i didnt listen. dont ever take hi the test are a mess and so are his lectures. be prepared to learn on your own.
barely passed, ppl who get As hve no life. HARD!!Stay away. doesn't teach anything in class, go just for attendance sake. but dont take him at all. no lose sleep over him, AVOID AVOID AVOID! test are really hard, with nice curves. Just stay away!
scary....definately not for the ppl looking to get an easy A. lost too many sleepless nights trying to cram for his tests...just make sure you keep up with the readings
Cute old man. Dont have to go to lecture. Read book. Notes from lecture are in library. Hard tests. Really good teacher though. Not my first pick but he isnt horrible. Great curve on tests. You will pass
for all of the negative info written about him, it doesnt do justice. granted, at time the material and exams are impossible, however, by taking the extra step and meeting him you will see thast he is very willing to help!!! avoid if youre a slacker!
An extremely difficult course, however you are really forced to learn the material in order to get any sort of A or B. But to those who are going on to medschool, taking him will prepare you wonderfully for the mcat. You will not forget the material.
He wears the cutest sweaters, he reminds me of Mr. Rogers. Hardest tests that I have ever taken but he will teach you a lot about yourself, not to mention biology
HORRIBLE TEACHER. don't go to lecture. MEMORIZE the study guide. you have to teach yourself if you want an A. hard tests. good curves. take the tests on the cd rom and the study guide...most of his test questions are from those 2 things.
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, outside of the textbook, I could have taught myself better.
His is the nicest teacher. His tests are hard, expecially if you don't study. But the curve is nice and he may give bonus questions on the test. If you meet with him, he will go over what is going to be on the test. Great teacher if you like to learn!
He has lots of cute sweaters, but his exams are not so cute. Just glue the book to your head, and you'll pass. If you don't like to study, avoid this class.
This was my hardest class of my college career. Not only does he give out the hardest and most inane tests, he mumbles during lecture. I literally didn't understand a thing. If you take his class.... study until you go numb, and go to the T.A. for help
one of the nicest teachers at loyola; class is very understandable
He is my favorite teacher this year. although his tests may be hard, he really wants you to succeed if you show the initiative.
He's a sweet old man but I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIS CLASS!!! He is WAY behind in his schedule and his lectures are HORRIBLE and BORING! The only reason I am passing is because it seems like I'm teaching myself.
Personally I like him. I mean yeah he is behind but I don't find lectures boring. Tests are relatively easy and curves are great. He is very nice. Just do the studay guide and go over notes and you'll be fine.
Kind old man, but can't teach! Terribly boring class, and the tests are among the most ridiculously hard I've had in college. Don't go to class; you're better off studying the text.
This man is a fossil and needs to retire fast. His lectures are extremely boring and not helpful. It was a wast of my tuition money because i had to teach myself the material. If you want an A, memorize the book. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Hell! Doesn't matter how good or bad this guy is. Reading the book and studying is the ultimate key for this course, otherwise you're in deep. Lectures are pretty much irrelavant. Nice old guy though. Anyone serious and crazy enough should take him.
Ok, he's a nice guy, but if you haven't taken AP BIO, I HIGHLY suggest taking someone else, b/c I have NO CLUE what's going on and I've gone to every lecture, discussion, studied a lot, and read the book and study guide!
To pass this class you MUST memorize the book. The lectures din't do much at all. All his tests are based on knowing the book front to back. Want an A? Study for hours... and hours...
Awesome teacher, i cant believe I learned so much. Who knew transparencies could be so interesting. All I can say is WOW!!!
Easy for bio101- just memorize the damn book. BUT for cell bio-DO NOT TAKE HIM- you have to learn from him and not the book. Totally ridiculous exams-there's a huge discrepency between how hard he is compared with other cell bio teachers.
Impossible unless you memorize everyword that he says. He's nice but it's not fair to expect us to read so many pages in the book and then look at 400 pgs. of lecture nts. NEEDS a course pack!
He's a nice guy, but I don't think I've learned one thing from his lectures. Read the book cover to cover and ESPECIALLY the study guide. Those will help you more than the lecture will. I'd suggest going to class once a week, sleep the rest of the time.
Rotermund'class was bad. All he did was sit up at the front of the class and read from the book. I went to class the first week of school and then came back for the final. You dont learn much from him...just the book.
the only reason I have an A in this class is because I already tested out of it, he is very slow and unclear, unless you have already taken biology and understand it I wouldn't suggest taking this professor
Unless you are a Cellular Bio genius, DO NOT TAKE! He reads straight from the book and cannot teach at all! If you read the book at all, its the quivalent to a lecture. He is very specidic and overlooks general ideals for specific cellular bio questions.
worst prof i've ever had...lectures are completely worthless, and his course notes are illegible, poorly organized and lack adequate explanations. can't believe i had to pay to sit and listen to this idiot.
has got to be one of loyola's worst. how he's allowed anywhere near a classroom i have no idea. nice guy, but horrible lecturer, notes are completely pointless, and tests are impossible.
He has VERY hard tests that focus on the book and the study guide...don't worry about going to class, he only talks about the diagrams in the book and doesnt give notes that you won't find in the reading. Nice guy, cares about you doing well in class.
nicest guy, loves it when you go see him, going to class will boost your grade. the lectures are horribly boring and straight from the book and the tests are awful, but he always offers about a twenty point curve. managable even for a not pre-med student.
HE IS A VERY NICE MAN BUT HIS CLASS IS THE HARDEST ONE I HAVE EVER, YES EVER, TAKEN. I STUDIED OVER 20 FOR EVERY TEST AND STILL ONLY GOT A B.
hey, take him if u just wanna study bio. Do not if u are normal. Hes bloody difficult. His exams are so hard, even though he curves. Hes extremely boring. BORING. 70% of students sleep, talk or just skip class(best solution).
Extremely boring in class, but he makes you know that book and how to apply what you read. he is in no way easy, but you complete this course feeling that you have a good understanding of the material.
A very helpful and kind professor. His class may seem difficult; but if you study and take notes, an A is not impossible. You will come out of class feeling proud. This class will give an introduction to MCAT and biochem.
hes a really nice guy. yea, his lectures are boring, thats why you dont go. read the book and use the study guide. me and my friends got A's and we went to class once a month to pick up our grades. take him if ur good with bio text books!
yes, he is very nice but he is so hard to follow; first, his lectures are super boring and i always fall asleep. It's hard to take notes because he goes really fast; he'll ask if anyone has any question but he waits 'til a few seconds to move on.
He is quite possibly the oldest, nicest, most boring professor at Loyola. His class was so boring, you didnt want to come to class, but he takes attendance, but half the class leaves after they sign in.His tests are somewhat hard, but he drops the lowest
His class is a waste of time and tuition money. On the up side you don't need to go to class, cuz they are useless. If you memorize the book you will be fine
He's like the grandpa of Loyola, very sweet old man. However, he's slightly disorganized. His multiple choice exams are reasonable, but his essays are HARD.(good way 2 prep for med school)Has an outrageous curve.Memorize the book. He takes attendance.
Hands down, the best bio professor at Loyola. Contrary to what everyone else says, his lectures are VERY interesting and engaging. His exams are very challenging, and require MASTERY of all the material presented. He is an Ivy League caliber professor!
Rotermund is like Mr. Rogers crossed with Mr. Wizard. Hes a brilliant scientist, a great professor, and a sweet old man. Unfortunately, his tests are killer, but if you take good notes and study your sweet ass off, it will pay off.
very sweet old man and if you want to get a b after 40 hours of studying on a test after a 20 percent curve, feel free. he teaches from 4 books, and his notes are difficult to decifer. tests are tricky.
Lectures are boring. I tend to fall asleep everytime but he takes attendance so ya have to show up. If you study really hard his tests are pretty easy. KNOW THE BOOK INSIDE AND OUT!!! If ya do that ur in good shape. Very nice and sweet old man too.
Dr. Rotermund is a very sweet man. He's very thorough and really good at explaning tough materials. If you are interested in the the subject, if you care, you should definetely take his class.
Think Mr. Rogers. He even has the sweater for it. While he can be pretty boring in lecture, he's very thorough about it and helpful if you ask questions. A sweet, kind old man. You can't help but love him to death, even if his tests kill you. Study hard, and you will do all right.
'cause of him I changed my major to Psychology, he's horrible, i didn't get a thing out of his lectures, tests are bogus and have nothing to do with the lectures.DON'T EVER TAKE CLASSES WITH HIM! he's nice, but he was going to school to be a dr, so his lectures and tests are just way to hard.
His class is hard, but if you do the reading beforehand its not so bad. Curves on exams. Exams are OK if you pay attention. To the comment below "He was going to school to be a doctor" Isn't this where most of us are headed. Isn't that why we became bio majors. Do you think med school will be easier
He is so lovable, that you can not simply hate him for some close to impossible tests. Not very good notes, but I have the feeling that if you read the book, and look at his notes you will do fine. Ask him, he will be glad to help.
dr rotermund is pretty cool. hes a really nice guy and very helpful if you ask him for help. his 101 and 102 class follow the same format and all you gotta do is study the book. the exams are a little challenging but just study and youll be fine, its not hard to get at least a B
hey, quite boring and not at all clear. makes his subject hard. he has knowledege but he is little confusing sometimes. work real hard , other wise dont take him....
his tests are hard, but he curves them SO MUCH!! 20% curve. wow. he's a lovable old man. it is impossible to hate him. he teaches straight from the book, but he does an interesting discourse once in a while. read and do questions from the study guide book. it will help you.i'd take the teacher again
Sweet little old man but class is impossible. Tests are hard as hell and notes are hard to follow. Work your butt off and do fine. Good curve though... ~55%=C and usually 20% curve on the tests.
OK HE'S A SWEET LITTLE OLD MAN BUT HIS CLASS SUCKS...HE'S REALLY NICE BUT THE TESTS ARE NOTHING HE GOES OVER...YOU ARE CLUELESS WHEN IT COMES TO THE TEST...DON'T TAKE HIM..I DIDN'T EVEN GO TO THE CLASS..I JUST READ THE BOOK..AND I MANAGED A C..IT'S HARD
Dr. Rotermund's class is very good. He teaches very well and is very clear. You do have to read the book and STUDY. Do not expect to pass the class without attending lectures, studying and putting effort into the class. Don't be deceived by the lazy people who don't have any interest in learning.
He is very bad teacehr and will make you HATE biology. Very sad, paying all that money to have such a teacher. His exams are so hard, that all of the class will lose heart in the first and last exam.
He is a very nice guy but a very boring lecturer. His tests are difficult but he does curve. You definitely have to do a lot of self-studying.
Difficult, yes, but when you have someone on an operating table you can't ask someone what to do. If you study and pay attention there is much to be learned here. The curve is ridiculously good too. And besides being an absolute genius, he is so darn nice!! If you plan on being a doctor, take him.
Incredibly boring and dry teaching style. Puts diagrams on the board straight from the book. He is a very nice old man who is willing to help you. It is a hard subject to begin with and that cant be blamed on him. Studyied a TON to get an A and a lot of self teaching. Curves test a lot.
No matter who teaches this class, it will be hard. It is just a massive amount of information. But Dr. Rotermund is very fair, and if you ask for help, he always seems eager to explain things. He is very nice. He also puts his notes in the library. Be ready to work in this class!
Rotermund doesn't really teach. In order to do well in his class you have to studya lot and read what is in the book. His lectures are pointless, the only reason I go is for attendance, which he takes. Prepare to devote a good 4 hours a week to studying bio.You learn a lot though.
Unbelievable, count # of times you hear "as such." This is a book to test course, agreed if it wasn't for attendance, nobody would come, half still don't. He can write a test though, damn. Difficult if you haven't read the material more than once. (me) Try to avoid, I feel guilty when I fall asleep.
made me hate bio this semester...he teaches the pages that are not assigned to be read...talks very quietly during class and hand writing immpossible to read..but hes a cute old man and very nice as a person
Hot Rod is readily available for help but still writes his notes. Has he ever heard of POWER POINT. I would go to class and sign in....that or have a friend of mine sign in.....I wouldnt take him again if the class were free
I luv Bio don't get me wrong but oh my God this guy monotonous. Basically teaches str8 out of the text. I almost never showed up but did very well on my exams. I wonder why he passed out attendance sheet-according to the syllabus, attendance is not mentioned as part of the grade so go figure!! Anyway, he's an old little fart from the 1950's era.
Very difficult tests, does not explain material well.
He remins me of Mr. Rogers, he is very good at what he does and teaches straight out of the book. His TA Rob is cute too.
he's a really sweet old guy; asks a lot of questions that he answers himself. slightly deaf, so he cant hear you sometimes if you ask a question. tests are easy if you use the book and study guide together to study... make sure you know your notes.

I love Bio, so I liked the class. But you really don't have to show up, I wouldn't if attendance wasn't taken. He reads straight from the book. Don't bother even reading the chapters, just look at the diagrams and figure it out from there. Tests very hard, but huge curves are helpful. : ) Not the most entertaining guy.. but not hard either.
The class is easy if you put effort and time into it. He's a sweet man but doesn't take time to answer questions in class. Teaches straight from the book. If you read, practice questions in the study guide and study hard you'll without a doubt get an A. The curve is VERY generous!
he's a great teacher! he always smiles which can brighten my monday mornings. you'll get an A if you study the book, do the practice questions, and study guide. he gives one heck of a curve on tests!
He is a very nice old man. His class is really boring. It was a struggle to come to class each day. He deffinately knows his material. The tests are really easy as long as you read the book.
he reminds me of mr. rogers. all he does is put the pictures from the book on his powerpoints. its a really boring class, and you could learn more by reading the book than you can by going to class. his tests are challenging, but his class is do-able if you read the book.
Class was not interesting at all, and it seems to drag all the time. The problem is you need to go to class in order to do good in the class!!!
The most knowledgeable bio prof I've met so far, too bad he is retiring at the end of the year. His tests are hard and tricky but so are the subjects that he teaches and questions on MCAT too. Very nice man, will spend hours talking to you if you come to his office, generous curve, generates a lot of material from other textbooks.
He's basicly a genius. However, he gives you so much more info than the book and more info than you need, so it's hard to pin-point what exactly we need to know to do well in the class. LOOK AT HIS NOTES IN THE LIBRARY for the 1st exam bc it'll make a difference between D and an A. There are only 3 exams in the class and no cumulative final.
Tests are very hard and detailed, but if you read the chapters, take notes, and do the questions in the book/study guide (I used the CD-ROM that came with the text) you'll be fine. Tests are very straightforward and his curve can save your life! Haha.
had a couple classes w/him..he's the best!
wooo boy, curves saved my GPA and i passed with an A-. bad thing is i didnt understand any of the last 12 chapters which won't help me as i begin biol 102. if you enjoy teaching yourself, this is your class.
The curves in this class are really what help everyone out. Although- be prepared to do A TON of reading and studying on your own. As with any Bio class, there is alot of material that must be learned. Tests are tough...
if you want me to teach you, its a deal!! teach yourself basically..he IS there to help if you go.. i failed all 3 tests and passed the class. yey. yes its cumalitive final and last 12 chapters....when did we go over them.????
BORRRIING!!! .......as such
His class was boring, not relevent to the stuff on the test. In addition, his tests were worded in a confusing manner. I felt like my tuition was wasted on him. He's very nice and approachable but that doesn't make up for the fact that his class is pointless.
His tests are very hard and confusing (not relevant to his lectures). On top of that he disposes the exams, so you have nothing to study from for the Final Exam. I can’t believe LUC has such a terrible and useless teacher. Who cares if he's nice?- At the end your grade is all that matters!!(right?)
it's definitly a teach-yourself class... but aren't all intro bio classes?? Boring lectures and simple but unpredictable tests. i don't recommend
Do yourself a favor and don't take this professor. He is very old, and way too smart to be teaching a 102. Take someone else.
This guy was a great professor....very hard but you knew the material once you were finished. HE DOES KEEP THE OLD EXAMS ON FILE! Go to review them before the final exam...it helps. Overall, he was very helpful. If you wanna learn, take him.
This professor is awesome! The stuff he teaches is fascinating. If you wanna get an A: 1)Listen in class and take good notes 2) Use the study guide (some Q's are from it, I guarantee) 3) Study! 4) Study!
class was not hard at all, he was very clear. big lecture hall, so you couldn't hear as well from the back bc he didnt use a microphone. other than that, he was interesting, knowledgeable, and very likeable.. good sense of humor too!
Super nice professors. Tests are hard - then again, we covered like two chapters per week so you WILL need to study a lot on your own to review. Very supportive of pre-health students. Drops one test - definitely helped. Final is cumulative, but the questions on are identical to questions on the tests, be sure to go in and review your olds tests.
AJ "Apple Juice" Rotermund rocks! This guy was so helpful and friendly. Such a nice guy!
He is a nice old man, but his lectures are very boring. He drops the lowest test grade and curves the tests alot. Tests are 80% mult choice and 20% short answer, alot of the multiple choice are straight from study guide. You NEED to read the book to understand anything. He takes attendence but its not mandatory the only grades are tests.
LOVE HIMMMMM!
Really nice guy that really cares about his student, but teach yourself the material because lectures are pretty useless. No powerpoint, outline, or any kind of structure for notes. He babbles about the pictures in the book which doesn't help you learn the material. Curves 3 tests & drops the lowest score.
Extremely nice guy. You can tell he cares a lot about his students. Very helpful outside of class. Lectures are fairly useless because he only really uses images. Three exams (not including the final), lowest is dropped. He curves all tests so that the class average is a C+. Read the book and take detailed notes and you'll do well.
Going to class is completely useless. No structure whatsoever... I did better in orgo than in his class. Completely regret taking him, even though he is really nice. Save your GPA, take a different professor.
I studied a lot for the tests and the questions on them were still confusing...Lectures were pointless...He was nice but the class overall was boring
He is a really really nice guy, but his lectures are useless so you have to teach the material entirely to yourself. I would definitely suggest buying the study guide and mastering bio. but he does drop 1 test and an A is possible if you work for it.
He is the sweetest professor ever and is so endearing! Unfortunately, he cannot teach clearly. You don't learn much in lecture, but it helps to attend b/c he will help your grade if your borderline. Material is not hard to teach to yourself and an A is possible but you must read and study. Grade is 3 tests, lowest dropped, and the final.
He was horrble, very unclear and does not know how to teach. He does nothing you and wont clear things up for you either. Nothing in his lectures were on the exams, so you are basically on your own.
