Talks really fast. Goes over material thoroughly. Kept me interested. Humerous. Nice guy. Great lectures. Teaches you things that you actually can use in a political conversation.
this guy talks very fast, uses lots of vocab that i had to write down & look up later, and wharps U.S. gov't w/ his sinical perspective. he is SO sarcastic and disrespectful. i left class early a lot to escape from his freaking ranting. tests SUCKED!
For a 3 hour Friday class, he was good! I didn't care for POLS but his stories and examples were funny and interesting. He does the best impressions of people. He also tries to teach from a non-bias position. Schendan is a fantastic teacher and an absolute pleasure to LOOK AT!! However, his multiple choice exams are difficult and picky.
I took the class at SF State. Mr. S is very cool. I love it when he talks about the conservative perspective "thats a big no-no" He reminds me of Stephen Colbert, but on a three hour show. He might seem imtimidating at first because he's six foot four and wears a black trenchcoat but after a while he's hellza cool :)
A very cool teacher, witty, knowledgable, and very interested in what the students want to know about. Not an itinerary nazi who stifles class discussion to get to the next slide like some other profs. Some found the tests hard but he gives very thorough study guides and drops your lowest grade. A good choice for what is normally a boring class.
He has an annoying habit of speaking at lightspeed so that you'll forget what he just said as you're frantically taking notes. Have a study buddy for this class. On the bright side, he can be funny and grades papers easy. Half of the exam questions come from the text so browse through it to prepare. Increased my interest in Poli Sci in the end!
He is a great teacher who knows what he is talking about. Class attendence is important because you learn a lot through discussion. However all but one of his classes are Mulitple choice which can be a nightmare for some people. Sections come from lecture and the book and they are very particular. Even if you think you got it, its hard.
Great teacher who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He seems to really care about teaching. Tests are easy and if you pay attention in class, you will breeze by with an A.
Schendan is enthusiastic and fun to listen. Come into class early: He puts up an overhead outline of the class for a few minutes, which helps to understand the topic with your notes. His tests are hard, but if you read the textbook, you'll be fine.
Great teacher. Keeps things interesting by having discussions.
i thought he was really intresting and fun to watch. hes tests are easy of you go to the lecture. are he really seems like he wants his students to learn
i really liked al. he was a good teacher and interesting. i thought he was very fair. his tests weren't very easy but if you pay attention in class you will do fine. overall, a good teacher. i had a 3 hour class with him once a week and though the class was long, his enthusiasm made it okay.
I took him for both 15A and 15B. Overall, I think he's a good teacher. I liked him a lot. My only complaint is that he doesn't give much direction as to what to study for exams. His exams aren't easy. His lectures are usually interesting and you can tell he loves what he teaches which is always nice to see. Would take a class from him again
Didnt like this teacher at ALL !!! He speaks wayyy to fast and makes lectures really hard to understand..assumes we already know this stuff!!!
Truly passionate about teaching. The tests are easy you consistantly go to class and simply listen and understand the concepts he draws out. Also, he apparently gets his test questions from the interactive CD's that come with the books. He is a quality professor and I would definitely recommend him
I loved this professor. He does seem to wear the same thing everyday but he's a good professor so what does it matter. He is really helpful and does impressions of different presidents which is funny. I like his teaching style and we got to discuss things more than the usual lecture. Take him...not too hard. Tests and paper were easy.
Grade is made up of 3 VERY easy tests, a VERY easy final, and a 1500 word paper. Light reading for the class. We read...6 chapters the whole semester? Very clear and concise lectures. He knows what he's talking about. Folds his hands a lot. Likes black pants and plaid shirts. Does not give extra credit--except for the 2 extra problems on each test. Sit in front.
Great teacher, I just wasn't interested in the curriculum so my essays sucked because they had no background, thought out theories, etc. Very clear and helpful. If you read and are a good writer, an A- should be no problem.
He's a decent teacher, but his lectures seem rushed. He will probably be better in a non-GE course where he wont have to waste time answering 5 forms of the same questions. His tests are easy if you read the textbook and listen to his lectures. You will be fine if you remember what you learned in high school.
He's cute, funny and very passionate about political sci. One thing I don't like about him is that his tests are too hard. read the book + go to class if you want to pass.
I like PoliSci so I may be biased but he was really good. I enjoyed his class and loved the discussions. His tests are not too bad and the paper is easy. The class overall is interesting and he is good at applying the material to what is actually going on today. He is also not half bad to look at either.
His side of the class was fine...not my favorite class, but he wasn't bad.
One of the best professors I've had. Very passionate. Class format and tests are straightforward. Just take good notes and read the book and you'll be fine. 2 midterms, final, and an 6 page term paper. Pay attention to his lectures though. Half his questions are solely based on it and he talks really fast.
Not going to lie he is a very nice and sweet professor, but he is really boring. All he do is talk the whole entire time and worst of all he talks extremely fast. Exams kinda tricky. His instructions were very unclear to me but he is very helpful during office hours.
I found the material difficult b/c I'm not too interested in the subject, but his teaching style made me WANT to come to class and learn about politics. He's funny and intelligent. Take him for PoliSci.
There is something to be said when you get a guy like this who is uber passionate about the subject he teaches..his lectures are interesting, and although I admit sometimes I get sleepy (I may just be a sleepy person, who knows), the way he talks about political science makes the subject very clear. His exams are STRAIGHTFORWARD :) which is nice
he never has lectures prepared, it's all from his mouth so be prepared to keep up. wears the same shirt everytime. exams are open note but he talks so fast you can't keep up. rather boring...but can be funny because he is so nerdy.
He is extremely exciting in class, he is loud and clear and jokes around and does bad impersonations. He has no daily or weekly homework but there are two midterms, a final, and an essay on political family models. He is really fun but sometimes he gets a bit overexcited. Overall he is a great profeesor and is good at getting the class involved.
SCHENDAN LITERALLY WEARS THE SAME THING EVERY CLASS. speaks fast, nerdy, dorky, nice guy. exams are straight forward, no surprises. if everyone bombs he usually makes the next one easier. regular tests, no final, a final paper. not the easiest class but you may as well take it with schendan. somewhat easy to understand, speaks fast though. 15bsucks
Very clear and engaging, with fairly easy tests. Did a good job of keeping his personal politics out of the classroom. Good usage of George Lakoff's nurturant parent and strict father models to help us understand liberal and conservative world views.
Great professor! Tells you exactly what and how to study for his exams, which make them VERY easy. Very energetic and quick talker. Bring a laptop, you probably type faster than you write, and this will be a good way to keep up with him. He does repeat information when asked, so ask if you miss something. He's straight forward, no surprises.
The lectures are interesting and he only lectures to the first four rows or so. The tests are hard, and has a lot of material from the lecture on it. He gets really into what he's talking about which makes it more interesting. The one paper he makes you write a semester is not hard and is based more on backing up your opinion with morals.
Schendan is a cool guy and down to earth. You should read the textbook to review what you learned in lecture. MAKE SURE TO WRITE DOWN EVERY SUPREME COURT CASE FROM THE BOOK AND LECTURE AND WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AND THE VERDICT. The tests are chock full of supreme court cases and your ability to analyze them. Paper was interesting. Recommended teacher
Great teacher. Keeps lectures interesting. Funny Guy. Make sure you go to all of the lectures b/c half of his tests is on little details about his lectures.
enthusiastic lecturer. exams are half lecture and half from textbook. don't miss his lectures and buying the book is necessary to read up on the chapters. does good accents and funny too, and also kinda cute.
Very fun lecturer, never boring and he's very enthusiastic. Be sure to take good notes because he talks really fast (bring a laptop). He's cute in a nerdy way and he's really funny. Exams are easy if you study and review your notes and book chapters.
He is so hilarious omg cracks me up all the time. So passionate about teaching that he does not bore you. Talks fast so you can't afford to zone out or you'll miss useful info. Midterm contents are half textbook half lecture. He is hot too it a quirky way
He is definitely a professor with an agenda. The guy mocks the republican party, speaks out against conservatives and Christians. He presented a view of con. vs. lib. with an excerpt from George Lakoff's book, who is a staunch liberal. His opinions are not unbiased. Take this class only if you have to. Memorize what he says and you'll do well.
First time teaching the course. Kind of unorganized and did a lot of things for the first time, having us as his guinea pigs. Super funny and sarcastic. I recommend his class, it should be more organized next semester if he's still teaching it.
Professor Schendan makes everything simple. He will discuss everything in a simple manner, especially Supreme Court Cases non-political science people may not understand. His class was straightforward, and his lessons are not hard to understand. I highly recommend him for Political Science 20, since it is one of the A3 GE classes
Since this was his first time teaching this course, I'll go easy on him. Overall, I enjoyed his class. He is overly sarcastic about a lot of things but you can see how passionate he is about the subject. He has really messy handwriting and his lectures seemed unorganized. Towards the second half of the semester, the material seemed rushed.
Professor is definitely a liberal. And at SJSU, 95% of the people in the class are totally fine with that. I wish he would present both sides, but whatever. The class is very easy if you show up and read. Just 2-3 chapters per midterm makes for easy studying. Show up to class to get cheat sheet for the midterms, and some extra credit opportunities.
I saw the ratings for this professor at the beginning of the semester. I saw how good it was, but i have been proven wrong. he sees the worse in his students, thinking they dont read or try to cheat, when, in reality, we're just asking questions to get a better understanding. he's not helpful during his office hours. he's always late. dont take him
I am a good student yet received my first F in his class. He is not helpful and has little faith in students. There are biweekly homework assignments which take time and are graded unfairly his tests are hard and he puts people on the spot frequently. Don't take this class.
He is funny. His lectures are interesting. Take good notes and you will do well on his tests. I would have done better if i attended class more often. Very liberal but if you agree then class is pretty great. Take notes!!!
Prof Schendan is a great teacher who needs a little work. He needs to find a happy medium bc he's extremely sarcastic. Weekly homework assignments were given for the first half. Rushed argument analysis too quickly. I would say it's an easy class.
He has a good sense of humor and is very approachable. Take caution: although attendance is not mandatory, it is highly recommended for at least a passing grade. Understand the readings and take good notes of the lecture.
He acts like Jim Carrey when he teaches, very charismatic, has authority and convinces students of his point of view. he belittles people who can not support their own point of view, but he teaches his point of view very well.
Professor Schendan is a great and passionate instructor. He teaches you to defend your point of view or rethink it's validity.
He is very enthusiastic and makes class fun. He let us use notes on our test. Tests were half lecture half book. As long as you show up and take good notes you'll do fine.
His tests are extremely hard. I felt some of the material was not covered in class or in the text book. I took him because of his ratings. DO NOT make that mistake. He grades very hard, even after giving you a few extra points on a test people still did horribly. He is my first ever C in college....let that tell you something
I enjoyed Mr. Schendan. Charismatic, and really puts emphasis on what he wants you to know. You only have 1 essay throughout the semester. I prefer Prof. Danopulos to him (for 15A or B), but Schendan is not a downgrade. Attendance is mandatory, you will need to see all the lectures to do well on tests.
Tests are 50% lecture, 50% book. You must go to lecture because he asks obscure questions on exams. 2 midterms, 1 final, and one 5-page paper. He doesn't use powerpoints, which is kind of annoying. He's nice and stuff, but his exams are very detailed. He lets you use notes, though, so make sure you write your notes in pencil
Absolutely hated the class. Every lecture consisted of reading, going over material and taking notes. 4 essays with an optional rewrite. Essay prompts are hard and he is definitely a hard grader. If he said 5-6 pages, definitely fill up at least 5 pages. If you don't he'll dock off a whole bunch of points. I wouldn't recommend the class .
He doesn't use slides but instead an outline in his lecture. Just follow along to what he says and write them in your notes. He gives 2 midterms, 1 final and a 5-6 page essay. His tests are multiple choice, 50% from lecture, 50% from the book. His class is pretty interesting and time flies in his class.
He lectures very well and keeps class interesting. His tests could be challenging, even after you studied for a whole day. I would suggest taking notes because it does help in the exams! Sometimes it seems like some questions in the exams have not been covered in book or lectures, and that is a problem. You will definitely learn though...
This class is interesting because he lectures pretty well; however, if you care about your grade a lot, I wouldn't recommend this class. Your grade will be based on only papers, and he grades them hard. In all my other classes, I get A papers, even in hard English classes with 2-3 ratings. In his class... B's and C's, and I still don't know how...
FYI: It's the same thing every single class, listening to him go on and on about greek philosophers. I was hoping this class would be interesting but he made it the opposite. I received my first F in my life taking this class. DONT TAKE IT.If you are forced to, get a later class. And attend every class if you want an A!!!!
Not that great. I got my first C- in college in this class. Make sure you scribble down EVERYTHING he says and put in all the little parts in the textbooks (cases, dates, etc) in your notes if you want to pass the exams.
If you do not attend class, then you don't know what you're suppose to be studying for nor will your essays receive a passing grade. He is too loud for an early class, it was like taking a 7:30 am course with Jim Carry!! He is definitely not approachable or helpful and will make fun of you in class if you don not understand something.
He's a pretty good professor. He's kinda funny but also pretty weird. Attend the class to do well on the midterm and final. Not very hard if you attend.
despite what others say about him, the class isnt that bad. as long as you attend lectures and follow his essay prompts youll pass. I got a 99/100 on my first essay; i did it the day before it was due and only proofread once. his lectures can get boring but if you participate and incite class discussion it really isnt that bad.
A few quizzes and essays. Reading the books aren't necessary if you come to every class. You don't really need the books, except for the quotes in writing the essays. He's funny and a great teacher.
despite what others have said i actually found his class interesting. your entire grade is based off 4 essays and a few quizzes so never miss class otherwise you wont know what you are doing. he gives valuable insight into the readings in his lectures so be sure to take good notes. essays arent hard, literally follow the prompt and you will pass.
This guy is amazing.. His lectures are super interesting…We even watch videos ..He does crack jokes once in a while. His midterms ares say because were allowed 4 pages of notes..He gives a little extra credit …Definitely take him if u get the chance
Good lecturer. Very funny, well read in subject. Attending class is pretty important since he does not use technology.
He's a really good professor who is well versed in American government. He doesn't have a strong tech background so some lectures are done on overhead and he doesn't use canvas. He isn't on campus all the time since he teaches at different schools but is very helpful and willing to talk for hours on any questions that you have. Real quality teacher
If he likes you, you'll get an A. If he doesn't, you'll know and probably not pass. I got an A.
Great teacher!
He's a cool guy. He's funny and wicked smart. Tests are a little challenging but if you go to class it's a piece of cake. His classes are engaging, I'd definitely take him again.
Professor Schendan does not use canvas much so going to class is essential in order to receive important information. His exams take information from the textbook and the lectures, so taking good notes will help you out. For POLS15b he assigned a few assignments and a research paper.
I took Schendan for Politcal Science and his class was very interesting. He explains everything so that you are able to conprehend very easily. He also has a sarcastic sense of humor and engages students to his lecture. I loved his class, I wish he taught more courses!
Very enthusiastic lecturer. He is very liberal. Many midterm questions seem overly specific. As in, he would go over the topics in relatively good detail but a question would refer to a specific statistic or date in history that may or may not have been in lecture or emphasized well. Doesn't respond to email.
Grade is based on two midterms, policy paper and final then he adds up all the points. Tests questions are very specific, so even if you go to all the lectures he really requires you to read the book since he will pull some material out of there as well.
Your grade in this class is based on various canvas activities, 2 midterm exams, and the final exam. The 1st midterm and the final are both multiple choice and you're allowed a sheet of handwritten notes. 2nd midterm is either multiple choice or essay type, his decision. If MC exam, notes allowed, and if essay type you get questions prior to exam.
Most of his lectures are pretty interesting because of his quirky attitude and the way he can project his voice. When there's an opportunity for extra credit, DO IT. My grade went up a letter because of it. His midterms are based on his lectures AND the book. He always tries his best to answer your questions in class.
Great lectures! Engages everyone. Tough tests based on lecture and the book. Study guides just tell you to use the online chapter study which is mainly vocab. Take good notes and record lectures to get a good grade.
Although the readings can be difficult, he thoroughly explains them during lecture which helps you gain a better understanding of the philosophers/theorists. His essays are self-explanatory and it's easy to do well on them as long as you follow the prompt. The midterm and final are difficult, so make sure to study! Expect pop quizzes.
Lectures feel long but can get pretty energetic, he's pretty passionate about teaching the subject. Stay on top of the reading to understand the lectures better, reading material is included in the tests. Overall pretty clear with what's due and has many extra credit opportunities, would recommend.
Tests are a little tough, but he is really funny and approachable. Make sure to do all the assignments, they all count.
I love this guy. His lectures are very interesting and he gives great explanations for you to better understand how government works. Tests are sometimes tough because the answers are so similar but they're all multiple choice and he gives extra credit. As long as you show to class and take good notes you will definitely get an A.
Lectures are straight out of the textbook. You need to ask questions to prompt him to explain things. Expectations/grading criterion for tests and final essay/presentation were not clear. Final group project worth way too much of grade. Not the most understanding prof, Schendan's kinda offbeat, though funny at times, and I did learn some.
Ughhh I hated this class. I have a GPA of 3.9 and this class ruined it! Dont take this class I repeat dont take this class.
BORING lectures and the test are HARD. Test are literally not on anything he lectures on so you might as not waste your time and skip class. If you can take someone else!! IF you end up with him I guess do your best to read but the book is extremely boring as well so good luck!
He is very approachable and very straightforward on what you want. It is not an easy class but the exams are far more challenging are used to in a class like this. If you read the book you can be very successful in this course.
His class was eh. His lectures are easy to fall asleep to. Textbook was barely any help on the exam. His exam questions barely seemed relevant to the reading. I skipped most of the time because I just fell asleep. The good thing about his class is there is basically no homework. He gives like 5 hw assignments and a paper, which are really easy.
easily one of my favorite professors. was required to take political science for an area d fulfillment, and it quickly became one of my favorite classes during the spring semester. important to sit at the front every class; take notes on his LECTURE, not just what he writes on the board; read the textbook; do extra credit. engaging, interesting.
Gives enough points to bump your grade up. Written "cheat sheets" are about 10-20 points.
I came into this class with no expectations as a design major. It has turned out to be my favorite class at SJSU. I already am a fan of politics in general so that might help. I really love his lectures. He is funny and nice person. If you come to class and take notes you should be fine for the exams. You can bring one page of notes for each.
Excellent class. Wish they taught more so I could take something else.
Go to lecture and take notes and you will do fairly ok. Just do the work and attend. Pols 15B is a big class so I didn't know him on a more personal level, but he was a quirky and funny guy during lecture. Tests are pretty hard, and outside of an essay and some smaller stuff, the exams will dictate your grade. Definitely come prepared to his exams.
Hardest class i took at sjsu. i dont understand where he got half the questions on the exam. everyone in the class was struggling to pass. his lectures dont help you on the exam its all a teach yourself course. Cheat sheet for exam was barely helpful because notes taken still didnt make the exam easy
the class was alright. not much expected from a political science course. the class itself was lecture heavy not very engaging and lots of note taking. your grade relies heavily on the 3 exams, which are difficult even with the cheat sheet. the hw assignments, including the research paper, are really easy and graded easy as well.
Went in to ask for help and I was told my last paper couldve been improved first of all it was a draft second I asked for help on something different third he didnt give me the same amount of extra credit for the online survey because I took my exams at a different place for extended time
Great lectures, great teacher. Riveting to listen to - the only class so far I never picked up my phone in. But BEWARE THE TESTS. I was ecstatic when I heard they were multiple choice - I figured there was no way to fail. I learned my lesson.
If you're a political science major he's the guy for you. Super educated on the topic and really wants each student to succeed. Mainly lectures and notes but let's you have a full cheat sheet for each exam. Curves exams. No homework until before each exam there's one assignment. You really don't need the book.
Pols 3 is a very difficult course. It requires us to read really challenging passages and understand it. However, he goes through the entire reading basically for the whole class and gives a thorough analysis of it, which you should write down. My biggest advice to succeed in this course is to attend his office hours and ask FOR HELP!
Only graded by 3 exams and one research paper. The paper is not worth that many points so you have to study for the tests. Lectures are long and boringggggggg.
This class is super lecture heavy, but Shendan is a hilarious and approachable guy. You get no homework for this class but make sure you read. The test are super hard. I never passed one myself. The 2 essays you need to writ he grades nicely, and make sure you do the 2 full pages of notes he requires daily because they affect your grade immensely.
Schendan is a professor that you learn to appreciate as time goes on. He's straightforward and blunt but he's such an amazing lecturer! Though I was intimidated, I learned a lot from him. He doesn't use slides so show up to class and write everything. He's very passionate about his work and his classes prepared me for upper divs!
This is NOT an intro class. I took this for a GE and I was so lost. He goes so incredibly fast. He doesnt use slides and rarely writes on the board. You sit, listen, and write. Youre only graded on your notebook, essays, and exams which means you have to know the material to earn a good grade. Not to mention a tough grader.
He is a great lecturer and is very passionate about what he is teaching. His lecture can get a little boring, but they are understandable and covers a lot of the stuffs that is in the exams. Your grade is mostly based on the exams, which are pretty difficult. Do the assignments he gives because they are going to help save your grade.
Very chill and charismatic guy! Before the online transition due to COVID19, his lectures were classic, on the white board, involving a good amount of student participation. Quizzes and tests seem heavy and lectures do feel long, but overall he's a pretty good professor.
Professor Schendan's POLS 15 class is great for Poli Sci majors since it challenges you a bit more than your average GE course. His POLS 3 class is very interesting and he obviously knows the subject. Whichever class you take, you NEED to show up or you WILL fail. Participate and go to class and you'll do fine.
Professor Schendan is a good professor but we were only graded on 5 assignments, 1 essay, and three exams. Try not to miss class because he doesnt post his lectures at all.
Great professor. Lectures were well taught and he is happy to clarify questions. BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HIM FOR GE! 65% of your grade is on tests and you MUST read the textbook to do well. Test Qs can be super specific like asking for a statistic or smth. On Canvas I got 90% but I think he bumped it up to an A bc I participated during class.
Lecture heavy class with a variety of quizzes, papers, and midterms. Pay attention to lectures, because he doesn't record them. A super friendly professor who's passionate about the subject and wants his students to understand the material. Overall, not too challenging, just get your assignments done on time, ask questions. and study the text.
Great, no, amazing professor. I had his sync class and attending zoom was always a blast. Heavy in the reading but he does a fantastic job at going through it in detail on class days. There are 2 reflections(500 words), 2 essays(1500 words), 1 midterm, and a final. A charming professor with a great sense of humor. Highly recommend, put in the work
Took his async class and had a good experience. There is a lot of reading on a weekly basis so set aside some time to get through it all. The lectures are mostly a review of the reading. Only one big paper which is pretty straightforward if you understand the concepts. Can't speak about the guy personally but his class is good.
He is a great professor, and did a good job at explaining the material to us. Some of the readings were hard to comprehend, but basically all of lecture was used to go over them. Taking good notes was very helpful for me down the line when it came to writing essays/assignments. He says a lot of info used on essays, so make sure to have clear notes.
I took Professor Schendan's class after taking HIST15 because it was a requirement. He posts the lectures on canvas and they're super easy to follow. He has in-person discussions that are once a week but aren't mandatory for your grade. He's a pretty easy grader when it comes time to assignments and there's one big analysis paper that is easy.
Professor Schendan is a great professor if you're looking for an easy grader. He only really grades you on quizzes and exams that are all online. It's an asynchronous course, so there is only one discussion a week. There is one paper in the middle of the semester that is worth a big portion of your grade, but it's an easy A if you know the material
Took his asynchronous class which consisted of readings, lectures/docs, quiz, paper, and exam. Those weeks could be overwhelming but it was definitely manageable. The TA was not a harsh grader at all, with easy points on papers. The exams however were 30 questions for 20 minutes which was personally overwhelming. Just make to read weekly chapters.
If you get a poor grade on one thing, which is likely considering he grades directly, your grade will most likely not recover. Insanely hard with grading.
taken hybrid. offers extra credit for attendance. need to read the assigned texts. focuses on the theorist's language. an amazing lecture never bored in class. the grade is based on: 2 notebook exams (based on page #s) , 1 midterm, 1 final exam, 2 essays, 2 reflections. come to class, take good notes, pay attention (lecture + reading) you'll pass.
FOR POLS160A: Attend his lectures and you will do well. He's very flexible about course work, and prefers to spend as much time as needed on each theorist (ex: he dropped one of the essays because we didn't get through the content quick enough). You'll read, participate in discussions, write a few reflections, one midterm, and a final paper.
I took hybrid course where it in person meeting was not mandatory but was worth attending. He basically uploaded lectures online and explained the additional details and answered questions about lectures in person. He was very kind and respectful to the students and very caring person.
Just don't do it! Super boring monotone lectures and extremely tough grader.
15 min for 30 question exam 30 seconds to think and go next to be on time
Amazing lectures, has humor to it. Talking about himself, he is very nice nothing bad to say against him. When it comes to assignments, that's when things get tough. A lot of reading, quizzes, exams. They are all on canvas and mainly your grade is determined by your performance on it, not being in class. If you like test/quizzes, then take it.
Very nice guy. Enjoyed his lectures a lot and they were very informative as well as engaging. Do read all of the required readings from the textbook, however. They pay a key role in the exams.
Professor Schendan is a super good lecturer and class was pretty engaging despite me not really caring about the subject. There are multiple exams and a pretty sizable workload, but all quizzes/tests are online. There's one big paper but it's easy if you take good notes in class. Attendance is not mandatory but recommended. Great guy.
Schendan was a good professor, but not a great choice for me. Very test heavy as it is mainly graded by 4 60 point tests that only give 23 mins for 30 questions. With a minute per question, I'd rate higher. Otherwise, clear grading criteria and good lectures (hybrid asynch class is a good choice/ recorded lectures with a discussion meeting)
He is a really good professor. Even though the lectures were an hour and 15 minutes, they were really interesting. He explains concepts really well; that the students can understand. Just be sure to attend the lectures weekly and you will do good in tests and quizzes.
Maybe if I actually wanted to pursue a major related to political science I would have enjoyed this more, but even then this class is just too heavy on reading/videos for me. Not to mention how long the videos/lectures/readings are. All assignments are available from the start though, so you have the option to do everything in a week if you chose.
Extremely lecture heavy, super boring. Pretty tough grader and didn't fully explain the grades he gave. Tests are timed, gives less than one minute per question- there were also several really specific questions, so prepare for detailed/extensive studying. Not that difficult to pass.
He is an extremely tough grader. Some of the questions in his tests and quizzes aren't even from the book or his lecture notes (I know they aren't cause we copied the notes 1:1) Do NOT take his class, or if you do take POLS 15, don't take it from him
The midterm and final exam have no study guide to help you, extremely hard tests. Lectures are extremely long. Changed my major because of this class.
lectures were not engaging at all, very limited extra credit opportunities as well. Don't bother coming to lectures because they are so incredibly boring and always last the entire hour and fifteen minutes. Do not take this class if you care about having a caring teacher. Midterms and Final are incredibly difficult
Do no take his class! He is a tough grader with 4 exams of 30 questions, 23 minutes each and you can't go back to previous questions to check your answers. Even for the quick quizzes you can't check your mistakes so you don't even have the opportunity to learn what you did wrong. Just don't even bother taking a class from him 0/5 if I could
He's incredibly cringy and BORING. So bad he made me change majors to psychology. I was super pumped for this class at the start but the way he grades makes it impossible to learn.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. The TA is a way better teacher. What took him multiple periods to explain ONE topic, the office hours with the TA explained in just 30 minutes. Don't even try to ask him any questions, he'll just explain in some convoluted way that he's right and just make you nod along, even if you don't understand. DO NOT TAKE
His exams are terrible, with some questions not even talked about yet. I remember this one question in exam 2 that we didn't learn about until exam 4. He may seem cheery about the class he's teaching but he does not care about you at all. If he did he'd at least let seee what mistakes we made in the exams but noooooo he locked them
He was very tough on tests and the lectures were uninteresting he also didn't care about the class's performance. And for the exams he never showed us our mistakes so we weren't able to grow from those mistakes.
The lectures are boring and hard to follow. It's also hard to study for tests because of the harsh grading on both the online and the in-person tests. He said he would curve the midterm, which hasn't been curved. I had a running B all semester then I tanked to a C- by one test alone. Take the class if you need to, but not this professor.
Just took the final and man some content that I studied for isn't even on there. Saw nothing about interest groups even though it was a big chunk of the notes. Don't take this guy's class, your grade will drop a couples letters easily. Albert ain't a good teacher
I was undeclared at first but I was seriously considering majoring in Political Science, but after this horrrrible class I am not doing that. I've had teachers that weren't great at teaching the subject but still cared about how we did grade wise. This guy doesn't. If you want your GPA to drop to a 2.0, then go and take his class I guess.
He's not a bad person, but the way he grades makes it impossible to pass. Hell you can't even see your mistakes in exams so don't bother. More than half the class failed the midterm, and having taken his final I know most of the class failed the class . The other Political Science professors at least provide study guides. This guy gives you nothing
A passionate lecturer who is very knowledgeable, however the tests are mainly based on textbook questions so you can easily get away with not attending lecture if you read the textbook chapter each week. Aside from tests there was 1 mid length essay and a few short answer prompts. Very easy credit.
Oh where do I even start! 4 online exams with 30 questions and 23 minute time limit. Midterm was 60 questions, final was 100 questions, both in person. Deducted points and never said why. Locked tests and never let us see past questions. No resources for studying. Basically no EC unless you have perfect attendance (doesnt allow excused absences).
Difficult class all around. Topics in the tests aren't discussed till later. All I got to say is 23 minutes for 40 question no take back answer tests. AVOID YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Lecture slides are very wordy but not the worst. 4 online exams of 30 questions w/ 23 min limit and the questions are from a large bank, mostly specific from the textbook. Lots of 5 question quizzes that aren't weighted heavily but can easily hurt your grade. Assignments are too time-consuming for a GE class. Just overall too much work for a GE.
Honestly couldn't handle the teaching style of this professor. Grades based on Turnitin not on your content/answers. Plus you can miss attendance if you can't reach the attendance board
All bark no bite, says he cares about the class but doesn't really care, Hard grader, with tests having questions that weren't discussed in class or in the book. If you want to waste your time, take his class
He's the kind of guy that grades only on what Turnitin says. So don't use too much quotes or he'll give you an excuse that your paper wasn't thorough enough.
frequent tests that are way too hard. 30 questions and 23 min. 1 big writing assignment, many long tedious writing assignments. Not worth the time. You might learn something but you won't be tested on the material you were given.
Time consuming essays where you cant even go back and double check your answers. Theyre 30 questions with 23 minutes like cmon at least give us a minute per question, so now its about speed instead of accuracy. Worst is the turnitin bcuz he grades ur papers purely of turnitin
The prof just doesnt care if you pass or not. If you get one bad exam your entire grade dips. The tests are the most frustrating with the limited time and no take backs. I dont care that its a lockdown browser, I just hate how I cant go back and change my answers.
Tough class all around - strict time limits on exams and unclear grading. But with some dedication, like using unstuck study for study prep, you can get through it. Avoid unless you're ready for a real challenge.
This professor makes me want to drop out and I'm not even a pols major. He grades harshly and gives lots of assignments. There is a ton of quizzes (1 almost every week) and 5 exams (including the final) but this isn't it, he also gives video responses (almost once a week) that can take anywhere from 1 hour to 4+ hours. STAY AWAY!!!!
Lectures were good. Exams will have around 30 questions but he only gives you a time limit of 23mins.
In my 18 years of living, I have not found a professor worse. He demands notes to be only taken on paper, expect 3 pages at least for every lecture, and then proceed to grade way to harsh for a GE course. Do not take this class with this professor. The mean of the quiz being 66 is enough to tell you about this professor. Also, he does not help you.
23 minutes to take tests with 30 questions. Very lecture heavy and will yell at you if you forget something.
I took this class because it was the only one early in the morning. The professor is good, but tests include material not covered in class, are timed, and use Respondus Lockdown Browser. There's frequent quizzes but they're only five questions and don't use the lockdown browser. Attendance isn't mandatory, but showing up earns extra credit.
You have to be at every class no matter the circumstances to pass this class.
You have to take notes every lecture, he will grade you on your notes, and for one lecture, you have to fill the front and back of one paper from line to line, or he won't count it. He does not use slides during lectures he just talks. You are only graded on six things. Two exams, Two essays, and two notebook checks. Don't take his class
Take this course with a different professor. Lecture slides pretty much don't help on assignments. You don't have much time on Quizzes and exams. Writting assigments are based on videos. Very time consuming for a GE. He relies on turnitin to grade so don't expect a high grade if answer clearly. If you need this course, DON'T TAKE IT WITH HIM.
Professor never sends lecture slides lectured in class on Canvas despite being the primary material for studying. Online quizzes and exams are often too fast paced. For instance, Online exams having 30 questions and has to be done in 23 minutes. The workload is heavy and you will have a hard time if you take that class.
Ridiculous gradings. The rubric and how he grades do not align. Class average was a 60 and it was okay with him. All tests are written tests and include more memorization than critical thinking. Little assignments to bring your grades up.
He's a chill guy and his lectures were fine, but the grade was mostly based on the tests, and the quizzes didn't count for anything really (5%). The tests and final were HEAVILY based off whether you read the textbook or not, if you didn't, good luck. The final was literally from the textbook, and so bad. Good luck if you take him.
2+ pages of notes front and back per lecture. Graded on 2 exams,2 essays,2 notebook checks. Like reading, writing English class on political papers. Grammar, citation, and addressing prompt matter for essays. Memorization, writing out answers beforehand for questions given, working with others, reading ai summary of papers help for prep for exams.
Worst professor ever. Each question is timed, 45 secs to answer every question on a TEST. Hard to get a good grade on any homework assignment. It's like he wants you to fail. I'm a straight A student and have never dealt with a professor as difficult as him. My GPA is probably ruined because of him. Stay away.
If you have the chance, take any other professor. Professor Schendan is the worst human being I have ever met. That man has 0 empathy. If Schendan is your only choice be prepared for lots of reading, lockdown browsers with camera on, and exams with more questions then minutes. If RMP would let me write more the list would keep going. DO NOT TAKE.
Avoid him at all costs. He assigns a crazy amount of reading that barely appears, uses lockdown exams that are too short in time, and has no empathy for his students. Worst professor I've had. Don't take. BTW this was AI generated, unlike my paper you graded. ╭∩╮
The absolute worst 0/10
Never had a prof so arrogant
This professor was a harsh grader and not easy to work with for a class that should be basic as it is a standard requirment
He made this intro class painful. The homework isn't hard it's just tedious. His tests are the worst. He's the type to give 4 nearly identical answers to choose from on a test. He also doesn't give you any kind of study guide or real prep. I went carried an A all the way through and I think I may have gotten a D on the final. Take with another prof
Quizzes and exams were locked down. Criteria on essays were not clear. If you are taking this for a GE and it is not a part of your major, take something else.
There are 30 long multiple-choice questions to finish in just 23 minutes. The writing assignment must strictly follow his instructions—otherwise, you'll get a zero. He ignores emails, and the only way to reach him is through office hours, but he often cancels them with random excuses. It's best to avoid him if you don't want unnecessary trouble.
Okay professor. Can tell he cares about the content, but it's a lot of content. Fairly passive aggressive. Need 2+ pages of handwritten notes each day. Only have two papers, two exams, both which had averages that werent good, but study and follow the prompt, youll be fine, I have gotten As on all. It is a lot of work for a GE, but it can be done.
One of the most unreasonable people I have ever met. I am against AI and never plagiarize, but I was flagged for plagiarism on an outline of the US Constitution. He did not believe me and refused to compromise or let me make up any of the points, which brought my grade down a whole letter because of one assignment. Also graded super harshly
His quizzes and test require lockdown browsers, are randomized, and avg 30 problems (5 for quizzes) and needs to be completed within 23 mins (3 mins for quizzes). his papers requires you to STRICTLY follow every of his ridiculous guidelines or you get a zero for even the smallest mistake. also accuses you a lot for using AI/plagiarism.
I can tell that this professor cares about what he teaches, however his essay grading makes no sense and his obsession with thinking students use AI for his course make his assignments unnecessarily difficult. Requiring minute and second citations of course materials for basic concepts of government is absurd. Take any other prof for your POLS GE.
If you need POLS for a GE just avoid him he seems to enjoy what he teaches but the class is just unnecessarily difficult for a GE.
Hated this class. His grading is so unclear and he only grades three exams and three notebook checks. So if you fail a test, its really hard to save your grade. His class is pretty boring but he checks attendance. The tests felt like AP exams, he expects essays.
