I'd rate Bernabe as an excellent professor. He is definitely challenging, and does not like "lazy" students. On the other hand, he did a fantastic job of explaining difficult material. He is well known for his first day "antics." Don't let that scare you off - he mellows out later in the course.

Here's the thing: He gets smileys because he taught the class well. Where he sucked was in that his exam was based entirely on products liability of which 15% of class time was spent. The exam, therefore, was unfair. Plus I think he thinks he's Raul Julia in Presumed Innocent.

So many reasons why class w/Bernabe was HORRIFIC. He is condescending to students. His exams are out of left field -- I think everyone in our class literally failed the mid-term. And don't get me started on his unreasonable classroom rules (e.g., no drinking in the classroom). Stay away!

Bernabe is just amazing. He truly knows Torts inside and out and he will make sure you do too by the end! He is very intimidating, but all you have to do is show up, read, pay attention and participate. The final exam is one the toughest I ever took, but the curve saves us all because no one really passes it! Must take for Torts!

Classes are engaging and he has a good sense of humor. Be prepared to read and know the case inside and out before class. No midterm, no graded assessments. Your grade rests on a final exam which is mostly multiple choice.

Professor Bernabe is nice if you go to his office. He has his 5 favorite students and he spends most of the semester interacting with them and helping them- which isnt helpful for majority of people. Also, his test is nothing like youve ever experienced. Theres absolutely no way to prepare for it. Just pray the curve works in your favor.

I can see why people don't necessarily love Bernabe, but the truth is he knows Torts better than anyone. The exam was not necessarily representative of the class and it was way too hard, but you will walk away thinking like a lawyer. In my opinion, his harsh demeanor and difficult exam is worth what you'll learn in his Torts class.

In my opinion Professor Bernabe is the best. I am among very few who completed the full semester at JMLS and started from the beginning one of the top law schools. In my top law school professor wrote books, but has no comparison with Bernabe. Professor Bernabe is the best!

before I took his class (not by choice) I heard really good things or really bad things about him. after taking his torts class, I'm glad I did. His explanations are clear and interesting. He tends to have favorites so if you impress him- he'll hold you up to high standards. Ask him for supplements that help get you ready for the final.

Lecture is entertaining but the class will not prepare you for the bar exam. His practice questions on his blog are useless prep for his final. I'm surprised the school does not mandate his exams because there is no way to adequately prepare. No essay and excessively long fact patterns for the multiple choice, some with up to eight answer options.

I really liked Prof. Bernabe, but his tests were SO much harder than necessary. He wrote the book, but it's basically just a book of cases, not anything that explains how the law works. Very frustrating.

I had Prof. Bernabe in 1L1. He was a great prof. to introduce me to law school. He does have favorites but will call on those who want to participate. He is very practical in his approach to teaching the material and gives a procedural/practice angle. I felt comfortable with the material going into the final but the test was a wild card.

Very knowledgeable. The exam was very difficult. Doing practice questions helped somewhat, but nothing really 100% prepares you for the level of difficulty of Bernabe's exam. Pay attention in the lectures, start outlining early.

Professor Bernabe comes off very tough and intimidating but he is a great professor. He is extremely well organized, which is helpful if you need to get ahead of class or plan in advance. As long as you do the work that is assigned and do the self-assessments he posts, you will do well! I cannot wait to take a class taught by him again.

Professor Bernabe is very organized and well respected at UIC John Marshall. He is very detail oriented and can be hard on students only because he wants the best for them. The only grade in the class is the final exam. It is difficult, but he applies a curve to the final because he knows how hard the exam is.

Prof B. expects all students to have read everything and be very prepared to discuss it. If you like profs who give you the info so you don't have to do the work Prof B is not for you. He does not go over all the material in class. If you just skim it, you will be lost. You will learn a lot, but you have to work a lot.

Taking the course over the summer is a lot of work even if it is online. You have to do a lot of reading, watch videos and go to Zoom sessions twice a week. Because the summer session is only 7 weeks, you do twice the amount of work per week you would compared to a regular semester. Only take PR during the summer if you have time to do the work.

His lectures are really interesting! The final was hard and he decided not to bump anyone's grade because of participation so don't rely on that. The curve was small, you can do well but you just need to do the practice tests 25 times. Great lectures and does a great job of explaining the material.

Good: Bernabe is a showman. So entertaining. I loved going to class because it's a riveting experience. On your toes, but in a great way if you've done the reading. Bad: SO. MUCH. BUSY WORK. I was drowning in it. I spent more time on his homework, preparing for his class, than my other four classes combined. No one assigns more work. Hard final.

His exam is tough. Be ready to come out of the exam like a truck rammed into you and left you on the side of the road. He can be funny and the way he teaches is nice. He does not cold call and asks for volunteers. Make sure to do the practice exams on Blackboard and ask if you have questions. I would start studying sooner than later for his final.
