This is a career exploration class. The assignments are clear and easy. The class is actually very helpful as well. Puertas is a school counsellor and very helpful. Highly recommend, especially if you haven't chosen a major.
This was an easy class. Bro Puertas is the nicest man, always willing to help. But the class is really boring if you're not REALLY interested in the subject. Only take if you're really interested.
This is a great class. First because is very helpfull if you want to imrpove your grades. It gives a lot of good techniques that actually work. Moreover the teacher is great always willing to help and to make the clase lectures clear. The objective is to learn in a fun way. Totally recomended
Very caring and personable teacher. I enjoyed the class. I got all my answers concerning exploring my options for a major. The class inspired me to serve society through my talents and skills.
It was a good class, I learned a great deal of things, and I am glad i took it. :)
It was a very fun class, we had different panels and tools like videos, articles. that helped us to reinfore our knowledge. the professor is passionate for what he teaches and he reflects that to the students. he loves helping and giving us advices
Good teacher and a good guy
Thanks Brother Puertas. Great class.
Dissapointed by the amount of assignments. I took it in the Spring and had more homework than Bio. and Stats. The homework wasn't difficult, just time consuming busy work. Wanted more practical advice, instead class was more philosophical. e.g. Every class watched some Jazz singer and analyzed, what can we learn about careers from this song?
I really enjoyed taking the class because I learned important principles for my life as a college student and as a future employee. Professor Puertas encouraged us one day to learn as much as we could while in college, making worth our time spent here, I was really touched by that and I am utilizing better my time here ever since.
HE IS AWESOME!!!
Great professor, Great guy, Great friend, he is always willing to help you, You'll love him, well there is a little too much homework, but still you'll enjoy the classes
Easy to talk to, and very approachable. Wants everyone to succeed, but also wants everyone to put forth the needed effort in order to do so. Great person with great desires for his students.
Best teacher ever!
If you just want an easy A to boost your GPA, take this class. But be prepared to work on dumb assignments. It really is a waste of time. But then again, GPA goes up.
Career Exploration 117 was an inspiring class. I got a lot from it
It was a good class where you get to know many people.
He is a very nice, gospel-oriented man. He wants everyone to succeed and his classes are easy. Just do the little dumb work he gives you and you'll be fine. He has an accent that I find cool. It is a spanish accent. Great guy. Easy class.
Excelent professor, he really cares about the student and he is always willing to work with you. If you need a class to know how to study this is the class and Professor Puertas is the one You MUST TAKE the class with
Amazing teacher. I was encouraged to explore and find my vocation in life.
Seriously? He is not a good teacher!well he is at times, I learned bits and pieces from this class, but nothing significant in way of choosing a major. There are way too many assignments that he makes worth 100 points that take a lot more time than he thinks.I wish someone would have written a response like this so I wouldn't have taken this class.
He's a really good professor. He explains the lessons really well, he is always asking for students opinions. Homework isn't very hard. The homework is really helpful for getting to know what abilities you have and what major you can pick.
Very good professor. He explains things really well. His homework is not very hard. He always care about students and asks them about their opinions. Great teacher!
Professor Puertas is my favorite teacher. I enjoyed his class & learned a lot. It helped me to understand the most important things I needed to know to make my career decision. I learned the most when I had assignments to complete outside of class. I strongly recommend Professor Puertas. He will teach you important lessons which will help you much.
Prof. Puertas is a great guy. Classes are encouraged to get to know each other and have fun and Prof. Puertas jumps right in. I concider him a friend and a talented teacher. At the beginning of the class I wondered why I was in there, but as I continued to listen and read some of his stuff, it became pretty insightful. Easy to get a good grade.
Absolute favorite class at BYU so far! Prof. Puertas may seem like he has a lot going on and not enough time for his students at first but he really does care. He's a great motivator and classes were extremely insightful. I learned everything I needed to make a career choice. Very easy class too! Just do all the assignments and it's an easy A.
Hes a passionate guy and gets into it, and that's probably why a lot of people like him. But that's about all he teaches you is to find your passion and network to find a job and repeats that eternally. So I just gave you the gist and you dont need to take it. A LOT of busy work and assignments that take up too much time.
Alberto is by far the best teacher I have had at BYU. He is very helpful and really wants his students to succeed. I would highly recommend anyone to take any of his classes he teaches at BYU before you graduate!
Brother Puertas is a great teacher. That being said, you need to keep on top of the homework assignments in order to do well. He is always willing to work with you, just don't procrastinate. There are quite a few assignments but they're usually pretty simple and easy. Be prepared to network with people!
He's a very sweet man and is very encouraging. Not much work to this class and sometimes it runs long, but it's very helpful, very easy, and the homework isn't bad at all. Almost nonexistent. It's a great resource to help plan your future.
He is such a nice teacher. Passionate about the subject and really cares about his students. There is quite a bit of work but it's all easy. No tests. It will take some time to do the assignments but it's easy to do well. Good class.
Dont' waste your time. Spend a day at the career center and take the CIIS and MBTI personality tests and do some job shadowing based off of what skills/interests are the highest. There is a lot of busy work in this class and even more contradictions. save yourself the headache.
FAVORITE CLASS BY FAR! All of the assignments and readings help you to choose your major. The tests are all geared towards helping you choose your major. Teacher is passionate and extremely understanding. In short, if you struggle to choose a major, this class will help you make the right decision. Easy A with minimal work.
there is a lot of time intensive busy work. This is suppose to be an easy A class, but I think that would depend on the TA you get as all grading seems to be subjective. bro puertas seems nice guy, but it is impossible to meet with him and he just leaves everything up to the TA. maybe next semester is better, but i wouldn't take chances.
Simple principles and wonderful readings. As an international student, I felt inspired and I am grateful for the lessons learned in the class. I feel prepared fro the future. Great career panel.
Brother Puertas is a great man. He really cares about each of his students individually. This class was an EASY A for me. This class isn't about choosing your major, it's about learning on how to decide what you want. Don't expect to come out of this class with your whole life figured out-no class can do that. It definitely helped though.
Bro. Puertas has been one of my favorite professors here at BYU. He truly takes the time to help and attend to his students. This class was awesome, it really helps an individual think out of the box. It will guide you in making an informative and wise decision. I would recommend this class to anyone; especially from Bro. Puertas.
Before taking this course, I had no idea what I was doing with my life. B. Puertas teaches students how to identify their true interests and skills using honest self-evaluation and career diagnostic exams. Though it is no "easy A," I learned practical skills that I am already using. It helped me find out what I'm passionate about! Loved it.
Brother Puertas was amazing. I loved his class. The class requires you to be active about your future. It was pretty easy but you learn a lot. Brother Puertas is super helpful. There are several presentations and interviews that are assigned. The interviews are more fun than they sound.
This class is great! Brother Puertas is passionate about the material and it is obvious that he cares about each student. The class offers great insight when it comes to the opportunities and possibilities for careers and majors. I would recommend this class to anyone who feels overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices.
Alberto is a great man who genuinely cares about his students. This class really helps you understand who you are and what you want out of life and relate those values to a career. Very helpful on so many levels.
Fantastic class!
Bro Puertas is awesome. His class helped me SO much to figure out what majors to look into and what careers I should investigate. The class is all about doing the reading and coming to class. Super easy and worth the effort! If you don't know what to major in, take this class, put the effort in, and it will pay off!
The booklet and articles you read are more helpful than the lectures, but attendance is required. The TA was more helpful and insightful than the teacher. A bit disappointed. Overall a good class with good assignments.
The professor Puerta's feadback along with the tests taken during the semester were really helpful to know what path to take, if you still don't know, or assure that the path you have taken it'it's the best for you. I completely recommend this class.
I highly recommend that Inter. Students take this class from Brother Puertas. He once was an IS himself and it's easier for him to relate to us. The class is very interesting and you will be exposed to many useful resources. Make the most out of your experience. Overall, I only have good things to say about the professor and the class. HAVE FUN!!!
The class was kind of just a joke for me. Brother Puertas is very kind but I don't feel like he helped me at all decide what Career I want to choose. He doesn't go much into decision making or anything that really helps you select a career. He also kind of pushed people to do things more philosophically and didn't support as much common careers.
This class changed my life!!! Both the professor (bro. Puertas) and the reading material/assignments had such a positive impact on my decision making skills, my self- confidence, and my knowledge of career resources/opportunities. EVERYONE should take this class, ESPECIALLY from Brother Puertas - he is what makes this class amazing!!!
Brother Puertas was inspirational. Love the man and the class
Brother Puertas is a great teacher. He is inspiring and dedicated to helping students discover their calling in life and to pursue it. The only advice I would give is to not procrastinate readings and job shadowing.
There were a considerable amount of assignments, but they were not hard to do at all. The class was helpful in that I felt more guided in what I wanted to do for my career, but there was a lot of busy work, especially during lecture time.
The teacher was helpful and the class was motivational. I have direction now concerning possible majors and careers. Thanks.
He will help you imrpove your life! His class was very enlightening he cares a lot about his students and goes above and beyond to help make sure that you get something out of the class. If you could take him for anything i would.
This class was by far the most useless class I've taken at BYU. You won't learn anything from this class. If you are considering taking this class to feel up credit, don't. There are lots of annoying assignments in this class and there are better alternatives with easier As.
The class was very helpful and the teacher was inspirational.
Brother Puertas is an excellent professor! He's really knowledgeable and wants students to succeed. His class really helped me figure out what I want out of life and access resources I didn't realize existed. The readings and assignments were actually useful. The personal stories he tells to illustrate his point are always fun too. Would recommend.
Brother Puertas is very caring & genuine. He focuses on guiding his students with a variety of tools to look inward & figure out what we want out of life, which then will help us explore careers more effectively. Months later I'm still using skills & tools he shared! The readings & assignments are easily manageable & he is always willing to help!
Professor Puertas is amazing. He genuinely cares about his students!!! I highly recommend this class and taking the most advantage of it. Go do as many job shadows as you can! Seriously, this career exploration class helped me so much narrow what I really wanted to do. Professor Puertas is honestly the best.
I loved this class! I thought this class with this professor would be more about taking attribute tests, but it was a lot more focused on the individual. He cares about each student and wants them to succeed. His class revolves around helping the student discover who they are and what they want to achieve in life. Great class! would recommend!
Brother Puertas is one of those teachers who is super good at going on tangents. His class is easy and he grades kindly, but it was hard for me to sit through lectures without feeling like it was a waste of time. I can tell that he tries to care about his students but this definitely is just a filler class.
The class helped me finding what I want out of life. It gave me direction and guidance. Thank you brother Puertas
If you are stuck and don't know what to do with a major, take this class from him! He puts majors in a perspective to where you can have a certain direction. I had no idea what I wanted to do, but after taking this class I have a very good direction. Fully recommend taking this class. You will not regret it!
I wish I'd learned more about the dynamics of the class before I signed up. Bro Puertas is inspirational and great, but this class is a lot more "self-discovery" meditation stuff than actually exploring career options. Fine for freshmen with no general career direction, but if you know what field you want to pursue don't waste your time.
Brother Puertas deeply cares about his students. I have a good sense of direction now about constructing my future
Professor Puertas is a caring and personable teacher. His class was truly inspirational. It gave me the tools to make the porper decisions with my academic life
Brother Puertas rocks. Love his career exploration class and the life lessons learned. Thank you
Professor Puertas is definitely one of the kindest Professors I've had. You can tell how much he cares about his students. I may not have 100% decided on what I want to do with my life, but I feel like I definitely have a better understanding of myself after taking his class! (also, there are tons of extra credit assignments!)
This is such a wonderful professor! After leaving his class, I feel very confident in what direction I want to go professionally and I feel calm about the things that I'm not sure about because I know where to go for answers and I know myself better. I still think often about how I am following a vocation and not an occupation. It's a great class!
Professor Puertas is an awesome guy who truly cares about his students. You will get a lot of busywork in this class but its graded super easy. The amount of assignments can get frustrating but as long as you do the bare minimum you'll get an A
He is the kindest man I have ever met. If you are trying to figure out what the heck to do with your life he is the guy to go to. He is super kind, really funny, and doesn't care about your grade. He wants you to relax, have fun, and really think about who you want to become. It was a mental challenge for me but everything else was great! 10/10!!!
Alberto Puertas is a very kind, caring, and loving man. He really shows how much he wants you to succeed in life. However, I'm not sure how much closer the class got me to knowing what major or career I want to pursue. I think the class does have potential to be beneficial for other people. I think the class is a lot of what you make of it.
This class was a great experience for me. Alberto cares about each of his students. The resources from this class are great for learning what you want Not everyone will have the same experience, but the principles apply not only to choosing your major but how you can approach life If you take the time to do the assignments you will easily get an A
I LOVED his career exploration class. He created an atmosphere that allowed all of us to become a family. This class will be as helpful as you make it - soak it all up and apply it into your life. His content wasn't super organized, but that didn't bother me. 11/10 would recommend you take this class from him, even if your major's "decided."
Brother Puertas may be the most loving instructor on campus. Super nice and pretty laid back. The class was really easy too! My only suggestion is to check learning suite for bigger projects that are due. Most of the time he will not give a heads up about them because he forgets to in class. Class was beneficial for learning about careers!
For anyone, regardless of the certainty of your future, I would highly recommend taking this class from Alberto. The self discovery and career exploration are some of the most important things I've done in my life. I honestly feel that every student should be required to take this class when they first start college.
If you want a sense of direction in your life and to discover your values and motivation for a meaningful life, definitely take this class with prof Alberto Puertas. He is super involved in the development of his students.
I love Brother Puertas's class! I learned a lot about career crafting and exploring. Most importantly, Brother Puertas is caring and inspirational and encourages exploration, especially in this career exploration class.
Super great professor! The class is fun and small workload. You do a couple group projects and a lot of personality tests.
Professor Puertas is a really good professor because he is committed to helping each student succeed! He will work with you to understand which career path you should take and he will help you understand what it means to find a good career through readings and classwork that makes you think outside the box. Overall, I recommend taking his class!
Awesome professor! Love him.
Bro. Puertas isn't a bad teacher, but the work load for this class is a little ridiculous. You won't have a final, but you will have a 4 page single space paper, followed by a 3 page double space paper, several presentations, 10 hours of job shadowing, and informational interviews, plus write ups. Be prepared for SO MUCH homework.
Brother Puertas is an incredible professor and human being. He is always concerned for us, and is willing to help us with the things that will be useful for use in the future. His lectures are great, with ton of stories. The workload is normal, and very enjoyable. It will help you find your vocation and purpose.
Professor Puertas is an amazing and very experienced career counseling professional. He truly cares for each of his students and
I was able to take a Career Exploration class from Brother Puertas and it did not disappoint! There is a good amount of out of class reading and it really does pay to come to every class. Overall Brother Puertas is really kind and loving but also helps push you to understanding who your best self is. 10/10 would recommend!
Lots of people love this class, but I thought it was just fine. I was already familiar with networking, personality types, and interest assessments. I did not find much value in the group projects or presentations. I did think the required job shadowing was valuable. Brother Puertas is nice and sincere, I just did not love his teaching style.
Career exploration opened my mind to different strategies for understanding what I want for my life. Thanks brother Puertas
Very good class, very good professor. Class includes a couple of presentations but they are short and simple. Helped me find what careered I was interested and not interested in.
He is often late and is little all over the place with assignments and very pushy in some areas. The assignments are worth it such as job shadowing and self exploring. This class has good content but poor execution.
Increbile class, incredible professor, learned so much in this class.
This class is an easy A if you do the assignments, but there many of projects, group projects, presentations, and busy work. This class never stressed me out, but it is a lot of work. 10 hours of job-shadowing required, lots of extra credit. I ended with above 100% in the class. I learned so many invaluable lessons, would recommend to everyone.
Professor Puertas is amazing. He is super caring for his students and extremely passionate for helping them not only decide a major but discover their vision for life. I took this class when I was unsure what I wanted and was able to get exactly the direction I needed to realize for myself what I wanted to do and study.
He really cares for us! Exposes us to a wide range of OPPORTUNITIES (love his definition of luck!) He's still refining his teaching style, but INFLUENCES GREATLY! He leads by example in networking & social media, guiding us to know what it means to be “marketable.” His class is V insightful & debunked my fears about my experience, major, & career!
Easy class. But the assignments sometimes popped up out of no where
Career Exploration is a great class! The class is skills-based one, so we don't go over a bunch of different careers in class. Rather, it's about how to do that journey on your own.
This class helped a lot in choosing a major as well with career exploration. The assignments aren't too difficult but are very helpful. Brother Puertas is very kind and really cares about student success
