Out of all the 385 classes, I only heard of people from my class who actually liked it. He's very good at explaining and overall a good teacher. It's a hard class, but I'd recommend him.
very organized and professional, but down-to-earth. explains things pretty well but sometimes doesn't give examples of everything you need to know. homework graded harshly but tests graded pretty fairly. doesn't give dumb quizzes every week. kind of boring, but relatively easy, considering it's a 400-level math class.
This guy is great. He explained everything very well with a good mix of examples and theoretical stuff. He made everything make sense and his tests were really easy, and since he was such a good teacher the class average was really good. Take his class.
Amazing professor. Young guy and very enthusiastic. He will do anything and everything to make this class easier to understand. The class may get boring but the professor does his best! Highly, highly recommended.
Poor instructor. Homework problems never relfected the type of problems on the test, which made it very hard to study for. Belittled you a lot. These are very reoccuring characteristics I have found in most math classes at this university and Im a math major. If not, tell the dept. that they need better instructors.
He is the best math professor I have had here at the university. He counts homework for 30% of your grade (very very few profs do this here) and tests are graded fairly. He is also easy to understand,
This is probably the nicest and most enthusiastic math professor one could have. Grading is more than fair and he keeps you attentive. Genuine, nice guy.
This guy is the best math teacher I've had so far at this school. He's explains class material very clearly and concisely. He's patient and helpful. Homeworks reflect exactly what you need to know for exams, and the exams he gives are always simple and straightforward.
Not a very good lecturer. He was not very loud so you have to sit towards the front of the class. Proofs he did in class were not always clear and concise. His tests were easy, which made for an easy A, but that was the only thing I really liked about his class.
Very difficult teacher for Lin. Algebra. Exams are different from material covered in class. He's got a slight accent. It's easy to understand. However, he is hard to follow and understand. I'd avoid him, I've heard there are better 415 instructors out there.
Manfroi is a terrible, terrible teacher. The concepts of this class really shouldn't be that hard, but his terrible explanations and mumbling speech along with inconprehensible handwriting impede any chance of actual learning. Just memorize the equations, even for the geniuses it's their only hope.
He is a terrible professor. He is lazy so he doesn't give out solutions to exams so we can fix our mistakes and his handwriting is terrible. I don't know how he got a job here. If the class you chose have him as the professor, you should get out of there asap and take it on a different semester if other professors aren't available.
Lectures were always fairly interesting for a math class. He speaks softly but he's a good teacher and is really welcoming to questions. Tests are really straightforward
manfroi's exams are what he teaches a rarity in math he explains very well and is open to questions during lecture
excellent teacher for 285! explanations were clear, always ready to answer questions!
Only math teacher I've had who has actually done examples with NUMBERS on the board. He's awesome. Take his class if you get the chance.
Aldo Manfroi is the MAN! His exams are so straightforward, not any of that trying to mix you up or fool you. Its what you learned in class and nothing else, usually easier than the homeworks
Very clear, very straightforward lectures. He doesn't spend a heavy amount of time on abstract material and instead uses examples (with numbers!) to demonstrate which helps very much so. His exams are also straightforward. Incredibly nice guy as well and being in his class was very enjoyable. I'd take any course by him in a heartbeat.
GREAT! Best mather teacher I've ever had at U of I. Take his classes if you can. He's straightforward, easygoing, and incredibly nice!
Good professor. Very nice and easy to approach. ALways willing to answer questions and constantly asks if things are clear or not. Homework load is very easy. Tests are straightforward. I'd stick with him.
excellent teacher. Explained concepts very well.
Great teacher - fair, understanding, intelligent. Not too much homework, test that actually reflect the notes, and great notes. I would highly recommend this teacher.
Great teacher! If you have the choice of taking 410 or 415, take 410 with Manfroi! He makes sure everything is very clear. The tests are very straight forward (basically the same as practice problems). Not much homework & it's easy. If you go to class, all you have to do is a few practice problems before the tests and you'll ace them
GREATEST MATH TEACHER EVER!! EXAMS ARE STRAIGHT FORWARD. EASY A
definitely take him for diff EQ. his tests are easy. although i think the grading scale is screwed up b/c i end up getting an A in the class even w/o taking the final. highly recommend him for this class!
Test aren't as easy as reviews make it seem. They are fair. Grading policy makes exams less stressful which is very nice. Take good notes, do the HW, and enjoy having a fun/nice/good professor.
Manfroi is a fantastic teacher. He manages to cover the material very clearly and in good time (we got out 5-10 mins early most days). He's willing to stop to make sure everyone follows and will answer questions. Homework is graded fairly, and exams reflect the lectures very well. Class was entertaining and helpful. Go with Manfroi if you can.
He is very patient with questions and offers a lot of help! Bet teacher I've had! And he's so cute!!
Great professor. chill, funny, and patient. very well organized and presents clear lectures. usually lets class out about 5-10 min early. really good and fair grading structure. thought exams were easy (understand the concepts). highly recommend Manfroi, one of the best prof/class i've ever had. he makes math fun and easy
Great professor. Great at explaining things and he's hilarious. Has a funny accent too. Attendance isn't mandatory but I'd recommend it for the sake of not having to read the book.
clear explanations and not-so-hard exams. however, diff eq with Manfroi could be like a double edged sword because there is no plus and minus in the final grade (except A+).
Simply put, this is the professor you want for Diff Eq. There are some must avoids, and some not to bad profs. But Manfroi is the best at simply explaining the material and making you understand it. I took it during the summer so slightly accelerated. His grading system is extremely fair too. Also, no +/- which honestly I prefer.
he explains things really well with lots of examples, gives you a practice exam that is the exact same as the exam, doesn't do plus/minus, and makes your lowest exam grade worth only 5%. best diff eq teacher!
Very clear when teaching and great at answering questions. Also good at balancing fun with classwork. Is especially helpful when you go to office hours. Use the book a lot for reading (assigned every night-not required, but highly recommended!), and homework problems. Material is difficult, but if you do homework and pay attention you'll be fine.
Awesome Diff Eq professor! Definitely worth switching into his class. Funny and good at explaining stuff and really cares that you learn. Attendance not mandatory but definitely a bonus since class in entertaining!
He's the best.
Manfroi is funny and makes dif eq, not the most exciting thing in the world, an interesting enough class. This class is very easy
He's got a kinda weird accent but it's not that bad. The class really isn't that easy but if you do well enough on the midterms the final is only worth 5% so it's basically a joke.
He is super good. He explains super well and is pretty funny. Make sure to take good notes during class because he goes through all the types of problems you need to know very carefully.
Best math professor I've had at U of I. Very clear explanations and examples with some humor thrown in. The material isn't the easiest, but do the recommended hw and practice exams and you should do well. Worst exam is only 5% of your grade, so if you do well on the 3 midterms you won't have to take the final.
Easiest Math I have ever taken in U of I. 3 midterms 1 final, the worst one will be 5%. Tests are same as the homework, as long as you do the homework, which is worth 20%, you will be ready for the test. I will take his class again if he offers any other classes.
285 is not difficult conceptually but the way the tests are setup it's easy to lose a substantial amount of points over simple mistakes. If I could do it again I probably would have taken it with a different teacher - I'm better at beating a curve than I am at not making algebra mistakes. Nice guy though.
By far the number one professor you want for Math 285. Tests are super simple if you go to lecture (no tricks, very straightforward.) Also, he is a cool guy who tries to make dull material not to boring, and you can definitely tell he knows the material inside and out. TAKE 285 WITH HIM!
He is, by far, the man for MATH 285.
Great, engaging professor. One of the best math teachers at UIUC.
Most engaging teacher I have taken at U of I. He loves his students, he loves to teach, and he makes sure everyone is on the same page. He gives many opportunities to get a good grade in his course. If you are taking math 285, take Manfroi without a doubt.
Its not as easy as people say it is. First exam is just like the practice (Easy A). For the next 3, pay close attention and remember the tricks. I would do the practice exams as well as reviewing the homeworks as I'd say I usually did worse than I thought I would just doing the practice exams. Small mistakes will cost you a lot of points!!
This can be a challenging class but if you attend his lectures regularly, take notes during his exam review sessions and do the practice exams, you will do great in his class. He sticks to the textbook most of the time. First midterm was a breeze but then they do get progressively harder. The final was comprehensive but doable.
This is my first semester on this campus. It is so great to have a considerate professor like him. He is easy-going, which means you can talk about things beyond math with him. His lecture is helpful and clear. He will teach some useful little tricks which are very important in Math. He is considerate, but you have to learn your own things.
Professor Manfroi is one of the best professors I've come across at UIUC. He not only is a great teacher, but he also has an amazing sense of humor. He is very organized when teaching and his explanations are quite clear. I honestly don't think there is a better choice for a MATH285 professor than Manfroi. He is extremely helpful. Take him!!!
Aldo is a wonderful person. He makes office hours if you cannot make his. He is entertaining, friendly, and caring. however, his lectures are too fast and he writes lightly. It is very hard to follow along. His practice exams are honestly the only thing I used to study for exams.
Manfroi is great. He's funny, understanding, and explains things very clearly. His grading scale is also very lenient. Definitely take diffeq with him if you have the opportunity.
Loves students and enjoys answering questions and listening to us
I had the worst time with this professor for 115. He was never organized, terrible at explaining and he made up his own math problems! sometimes the solutions wouldn't make sense and it didn't help me learn the material at all. I spent the entire semester teaching myself from the book. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS
Definitely need to show up for class, but he let us out early 90% of the time. He is hilarious and I would take him again for sure.
He is the great professor on this land. He is hilarious and loves all of his students and makes the class really enjoyable and easy. His practice exams are the only thing you need to get an A in the class
The best professor I've had at UIUC.
I honestly can't think of anything about this class I didn't like. He balances a chill environment with actually teaching the material well. Plenty of opportunities to ask questions are given and he genuinely cares that people understand. His office hours are flexible and he lets students set up appointments if they can't make the set hours.
Honestly the best math professor I've had at UIUC. He's super chill and balances the material with humor.
This guy is amazing. 90% of the time he finishes early and lets you leave, but you almost don't want to because this guy is so fun to listen to.
Attend lecture and do the readings before-hand. Amazing guy
this guy is just amazing
Great professor all around, highly recommend.
Amazing professor. Lectures are concise, specific and really well thought out. Exams and homework are really based on the lectures so that's a huge plus!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PROFESSOR MANFROI!! This dude is hilarious. He also doesn't assign more homework than you need to understand the problems. Will definitely be taking his classes in the future.
This professor made learning differential equations a breeze! In fact, I barely remember referencing the textbook at all, that's how clear his lecture videos are! I'll definitely try to take more of his classes in the future.
Online lectures were concise and full of example problems to prepare us for the exams. More importantly, this man Rickrolled us while learning about the Fourier series, so he definitely has my approval.
He was always funny and did a great job to stay connected with students during these tough times. Overall enjoyed the class and I am really not a fan of straight math! Awesome professor!
Not even done with his class yet and I am writing a review. Best professor I've had thus far. Teaches the material so well AND he kept his lecture videos minimally short! Not alot of homework, but enough so that you understand what you're doing. Thought this class would be hard. It's not. Exams are very simple. If you're taking 285/86 TAKE MANFROI!
Amazing professor for DiffEQ, his lectures are in-depth he really knows how to explain the content.
Even though I had him asynchronously he made the experience still fun. The way he constructed the class made sure you would get an A if you did the given work. He was very approachable and accommodating during office hours. I wish I had him either online or in person because even reading some of his answers on Campuswire was just fun.
Manfroi is AMAZING. If he's an option for a class PICK HIM. Manfroi was able to make an online asynchronous class fun and engaging. No other professor I had in the Frankenstein of a school year that was 2020-2021 even came close to being able to engage people with their lecture videos as well as Manfroi did.
This man must have changed. For calc 3 he is terrible. His accent is hard to understand, and he is very quiet in lectures, very difficult to hear. He only lectures the easy examples. His midterms are very unfair. Our first one was very long for only 50 minutes. Our second one was shortened, so 1 wrong is a B. Unfair. AVOID this guy like the plauge.
He does not teach many things, and he only cares about the most basic part. If you want to learn something and get a deep understanding of calculus, do not go to his course. Plus, there are only 8 problems in the exam so you may loss a lot of points if you just make a tiny mistake.
Calc 3 is hard... In my opinion much harder than Calc 2. You have to memorize a TON of stuff. There is SO much material. Many times you will stare at a problem and not know even how to start it. Take this class over the summer at a community college if you can. I would avoid this class if possible. If you can't, find another professor. Good luck
Prof. Manfroi is a good professor and does a good job during lectures introducing the concepts, however, sometimes it can be a little dry and oftentimes not super engaging. The tests have MCQs each worth 5 points each so basically if you miss 2 MCQ problems but get everything else correct, you are down to somewhere in the B range on the test
Amazing, 100/10!! Highly recommend, made calc3 the easiest and funnest class I've ever taken. Please take him if you have a chance and go to lectures!
I love manfroi's exams as they are quite easy to prepare for.
While Calculus III is not an easy class in general, Professor Manfroi did a great job teaching the complicated concepts in a digestible way. He was always willing to answer questions during class and office hours and while the class was a heavy workload (lots of homework, five exams, etc.) he always brought humor to his lectures.
Great professor. He provides a ton of resources to be successful. The practice exams he gives help u understand the types of questions he asks, and the actual exams are even a little easier. One exam gets dropped which is also nice
the practice exams were so similar to the actual midterms, and manfroi was easy to approach and explained the material in a great way! way better than calc 2 if you had a bad experience with that, because so did i
Really funny guy. Helped me like math again after taking CALC 2. Really the tests were straight forward and for the most part didn't ask ridiculous questions.
Loved having Manfroi for calc 3. He's really funny and cares that his students understand his lectures. His tests are extremely reasonable. The practice tests he gives are very similar to his exams and if you fully understand them you should be set for the exam. I'm already signed up for math 285 with him next semester.
Extremely good professor. Everything he asks on exams is extremely reasonable and there are never any surprises. Very clear what you need to know. Lectures were decently engaging and all topics were explained well. He's a really funny guy and definitely cares about his students. My one complaint is that midterms were sometimes overly short
Manfroi is the man! Enough said.
Manfroi was a really good lecturer. Everything in the course could've been learned well via textbook, but his lectures were good enough that many including myself kept attending. I wish my grade was higher. I just suck at math. A's were 100% obtainable. Enjoyed enough to take Math 285 last semester.
Funniest professor I had this semester. Very fair exams with straight-forward questions. Love this man so much.
Manfroi grades as anything above a 90.00 is a flat A. His lectures are clear in terms of content, but if you don't sit close it is sometimes difficult to hear him. His tests are very reasonable and similar to past exams and practice exams. His sense of humor helps the class move along. Definitely take him if able, far easier than other 241 profs.
dawg how this guy have a 5.1 good prof tho, would recommend
The best professor I had!
Greatest math prof ever, it had been a while since I had taken any math before I took 241 so it was a little rough but he made it bearable.
I had Manfroi for Math241 and very much enjoyed it. His lectures are clear and his humor definitely livened up the atmosphere. Tests were straightforward so if you payed attention in lecture you were fine. At the time of this post his rating is a 5.3 out of 5.0 for some reason, but that is definitely a lowball compared to what he deserves.
He was great. Made calc 3 so easy to understand and his tests are very fair.
Absolutely amazing professor. Very engaging with his students and ready to answer any questions they may have. He was able to teach what should have been pretty hard material in an easily accessible and easy-to-learn way.
Very good professor. He went a little fast during lectures but if you do the homework most of what he says will make sense. However, there are quite a few homework assignments and worksheets throughout the semester. Overall, he was pretty funny and seems to care that his students understand what he is teaching.
I love having Manfroi so much that I also took Math 285 with him this semester. He is concise and I enjoy his lecture style. He really wants students to reach out and ask questions. He creates an inclusive environment for female students, which doesn't always happen in engineering classes.
Profesor Manfroi saved my life from Math241.
The best professor in Math 241. Highly recommended. The class is a lot of fun and the exams are not difficult if you understand all concepts and do the practice exams. I got 100 in the final and learned a lot from his class.
My favorite professor this semester. He was hilarious and was great at making the more difficult content digestible. The tests aren't too difficult, they test for knowledge rather than try to trick you. It's still a good idea to find extra practice problems on your own though.
I can't give any other input that hasn't been given already. You can already see how goated this man is by the other reviews. Differential Equations with Manfroi was the most enjoyable math class I've had in college. I'm not great at math but I will likely end with an A (hopefully). Even if I don't, doesn't matter. He made the class great. 10/10.
Second time having Manfroi, loved him both times. Very caring and smart professor. He'll periodically stop throughout his lectures just to make sure everybody's doing okay. Amazing person, best math professor
Funniest prof at UIUC. You can tell that he loves to teach Diff Eq and he always comes to lecture very prepared. He will typically let you out of lecture 5 minutes early too. He will also try and make sure that he is entertaining, which is very good for a class that many majors have to take.
Professor Manfroi's lectures are very clear on what material needs to be known, and is very funny and friendly while answering questions. All exams on this class are on prairielearn and are very similar to the practice exams. If one puts in even some effort into this class while attending lectures, they should expect to do well.
He's such a great professor and super funny. The class itself is not terrible and has plenty of practice exams provided, and the homework helps.
one of the best professor, the exams were really similar to the practice ones
Take his class
Aldo is a great professor who is also very funny. Love him!
Funny quirky man. Explains things well (though with questionable handwriting). Textbook isn't mandatory but he gives you a PDF for the one he wrote for free. Just show up to lecture and take notes, you'll be fine.
So overrated. Lectures are very...ok? They're not bad but definitely not that great. He seemed uninterested whenever I went to office hours for extra help, and was not that considerate about extensions. Class is soooo badly structured which made it hard to stay on top of work. Exams were super easy. But I've had way better math profs.
Use the note he give, that is really helpful.
He's funny and carefree. In all his midterms he includes a movie question from a movie that students vote to watch. His lectures are very concise, clear, and to the point and he seems to not even put much effort into lecturing. Nearly all his lectures end early. He's just a talented lecturer and he tries to interact and connect with the students.
Professor Manfroi kept a light atmosphere during his lectures but still kept them highly educational. He was always joyful and explained everything clearly. The class is much easier than Calculus at UIUC and is not a lot of work. The exams matched pretty well what was on the practice exams.
Manfroi is really chill and makes the class feel fun instead of stressful. Also, the tests are easy As as long as you do the homework and pay attention in lectures.
Prof. Manfroi is great, he clearly cares about his students and structures the course in a way where almost anyone can succeed. I will say lectures were sometimes difficult to follow especially while taking notes at the same time, but with the help of examples, things usually became clearer.
Best math professor ever. Never drop a single lecture of his.
Best professor ever!!! His practice tests were similar to exams. Super fair and kind!!
Manfroi wants you to do well and structures the class toward that. His lectures were clear, helpful, and understandable (until the last few weeks), and the homework reflected lecture and test material. Generous practice tests, grading, and test drop policy. Everything is also available online, but in-person lectures were more helpful.
"How's it going?" he asks us multiple times per lecture. Very chill and laid back professor, always cracking jokes. Everyone else seems to find this class very easy and get A's.
Absolutely the best professor I have in Math department, much better experience than Linear Algebra with someone else. Practice tests and homework are really helpful for exam, and the lectures are great and clear with little efforts to fully understand the materials, and Prof. Manfroi is very chill and caring to his students.
I love Aldo. The course itself is not very hard. His lectures are informational. Although not mandatory, I still highly recommend u to attend. Not too much homework and homework is strongly related to exams. Only 90 points, u can get an A. Cheers!
He was good, but bro literally didn't care about the math. It seemed like he just came in to teach, and not because he actually really cared. Also, the grading is pretty easy - the class could easily has a C or D average if he wants, so that is goated of him. But overall he just comes in to teach, not to actually be passionate about math.
Prof Manfroi is extremely kind and caring and he makes his class so chill- he literally asks bonus questions about movies on his exams. Lectures weren't required but I went to every class willingly and took notes (only class I ever took notes in) because he was so engaging and passionate.
great professor, definitely recommend.
Greatest math teacher I have ever had. Homework is infrequent and extremely easy, almost impossible to fail this class. Also has amazing hair.
Best math professor I have ever had.
Professor Manfroi is AMAZING. This man can explain all the concepts with ease and make them more understandable than the textbook. He is also really funny and does small talk lecture (AMERICA'S CUP!!!). This makes the whole class a very entertaining and easy experience, but it still feels like we learn a lot. Best professor I've had at UIUC!
If you have a disability he won't accomodate you unless you give him the accomodation letter early as hell so if it's causing you a bad grade and you don't figure that out until late you're screwed. Additionally, the website he uses for his tests are awful and cause you to loose a lot of points for no reason and his quizzes are very unforgiving
Great professor
absolute goat. love the grading scale (90.01 is an A). lectures could get a bit boring since he'd sometimes show the longwinded proofs, but he also is pretty hilarious and knows how to lighten the mood. he usually lets out early, but late afternoon classes finish even faster since he speeds through content, so take him early in the day
Aldo is very good at balck board lecture teaching and will provide a lot of similar questions for a concept to make sure you understand the concept. He usually will end his lecture 10 mins early but the content is a lot.
He's literally the best math professor I've had at this school.
He is not godlike as some suggest, but considerably better than other math professors here. Lectures can be helpful but I live by the textbook and practice tests, which I found to be more useful. Definitely pick him if you have a choice and plan on going to lecture
Manfroi made a class I expected to be difficult understandable in an engaging way. Be prepared to not be able to read his handwriting, but it's okay because he teaches at a very manageable pace. He can fit all the lecture info into his class without rushing anything, and class typically ends 5-10 minutes early. Highly recommend for DiffEQ.
Don't get me wrong, I love Professor Manfroi, but not god as everyone tells. He's chill, lectures are clear and usually end early. My only thing is he has shorter and fewer office hours, and he's kind of fast through lectures but the exams are fair and he is great at explaining the content. Also be versed on music since we play song pop party
Don't get me wrong, this professor is very nice. He ends lectures early and the course is pretty easy. However, I didn't learn much from this class. It seems like he is lecturing b/c it's his job rather than b/c he loves it. If you just want a good grade for this class, he's great. If you want to actually learn something from this class, beware.
He's pretty good at explaining stuff, and he's laidback and funny. Lectures are a bit quick though so it can be hard to keep up sometimes.
His lectures are fast an sometimes it doesn't make sense but once you do the homework its very straight forward, come early to class and ask to play songpop!
He was an easy professor for sure, but did a poor time using lecture to get the information across. Stopped going to class after the second exam. He just does not know how to explain stuff.
Goes quite fast in lectures, handwriting is often illegible (he jokes about it all the time). Exams and HW is easy, grading is easy but lectures can be long-winded and go over unnecessary stuff that is confusing.
This class is relatively easy, I wish I could tell you more about this professor but I stopped going to lecture after the first test and only really looked at his notes to study. His tests are super easy and concepts are interesting. Light at the end of the tunnel after all the calc classes.
I think for this semester the tests gotten harder, because before people said it was really easy. I still have an A but haven't gotten a single A on any of the midterms. He is a great professor and is really nice, but some of the harder material does show up on the test and can be confusing sometimes, especially the multiple choice questions.
Exams are on the easier side, and the grading is forgiving too; +90 is considered an A. Lectures aren't mandatory, and not very helpful, in my experience. He solves multiple questions instead of explaining concepts, if you learn well in these conditions you should go. His handwriting is quite hard to read. Cool guy in general though. GOAT
Exams are relatively straightforward, and the class weighting makes getting an A very manageable. Lectures can be worth going to, but they get confusing if you get lost in the first few minutes. However, Professor Manfroi is really nice and does his best to help if you ask.
The exams are pretty nice and his lectures are somewhat engaging.
He's a very engaging lecturer and a pretty funny guy. Class isn't required but go otherwise you will get lost and fall behind. Exams were always fair and pretty simple compared to the in-class examples he'd give. The grading scale is also very nice since a 90 is the cutoff for an A. Definitely an easier class that any calculus class.
