Although knowledgeable in BIOCHEMISTRY, he is a horrid EXB prof. He doesn't teach any EXB material. Rather, he destroys the hard work Dr. Bodine, Shaffrath, and Salitsky put in dispelling gymlore. Gomes provides no scientific evidence for many of his claims. Sadly, many underclassmen think he is legit. Tough luck when they take other EXB courses.
I liked his class.
Interesting course. Its a new course so Gomes is still trying different things. But he tries his best to encourage student to learn the materials. I would encourage people to try taking it.
This class was really interesting and I highly recommend it to anybody who wants to work in an exercise related field such as personal training or strength and conditioning or if you just like working out! His tests are pretty fair, but the first midterm is a little tough. The book is a very helpful resource for this class.
I was scared to take this class because of the previous posts but I took it anyway and its probably one of my favorites at Davis. I thought Prof Gomes was very interesting. His lectures were never boring. The writing assignments were interesting and the grading was fair. The first exam is the hardest. I did not buy the book just study his slides.
HORRIBLE. If you truly know your physiology (or if you simply read the book), you'll know that this guy is not credible at all. I could write a dissertation on the countless events where he has given us irrefutably incorrect information. He uses other professors slides & reads off of them, gives wrong information, but is cocky as hell.
LECTURE: his lecture notes could use some clarification. He defines the subject well, but does not explain the inter depended relationships among subjects, which is crucial to get a solid "A". CREDIBILITY: sometime the wrong answer on his sample exam would turn out to be the correct answer on the actual exam, which is very frustrating for students.
This guy will make your mind run crazy. He contradicts the book left and right. I have never felt so stumped in a class before, I am so confused!
His lectures were pretty good and he offered review sessions before the midterm. All I did for his portion of the class was review the lectures, podcasts and skim the book. I managed to do pretty well even though I didn't study as much for it like I did the first midterm. He's also pretty funny and wakes you up during lecture with funny videos.
I felt that Gomes spoke way too quick (or maybe it was hard to follow his accent). Test questions were confusing! The material was not easy, but he tried to keep lectures interesting. All in all, not the best professor, but not the worst either.
I cannot understand professor Gome accent so do not go to class because all he does is read off the ppt slides and it's very difficult to understand him. FYI he does even use his own ppt slides so most of time he do not know what he is talking about. He should just teach EXB110...... P.S. there will be a down curve at the end of the quarter!!!!!
He taught the Cardiac and muscle portion of npb.His test was slightly more difficult, but it wasn't impossible. He gave us notes as well as the pdf which were both very clear and helpful! I would recommend you take him and Usrey! Great class. His accent is difficult at first but nothing too bad and he go over things again if we didn't understand.
He teaches the second unit of NPB 101. His lectures are interesting to listen to but sometimes can be boring. He wakes you up with random youtube videos. His exam was a lot harder than I expected and was the lowest score of my three midterms. Good thing they let you drop a midterm.
OMG worse professor ever. not very clear about the notes and rambles about useless information. cocky as hell. his exam questions are tricky so make sure you really try to understand what he is asking cause the questions aren't clarified well. avoid him if you can!!
I'm not sure why people hate on prof Gomes so much. He's great and was the better than furlow or usrey. He is so funny and is good at delivering the info. My best exams came from his portion of the class. His exams weren't very tough if you worked hard. I Definitely recommend him. He Loves what he does and is an excellent prof.
He brought color to the material for his portion of NPB 101. Muscle and Cardiac portion is not a joke and the reason why people didnt do well is because they didn't want to attend lectures to listen to his "accent" whatever that may mean. He's super enthusiastic and very smart. His midterm was very straightforward compared to Usrey's. Take him! :)
He is so cool and his test is fair enough.
Good professor, pretty funny guy. TIP: Be an active student during lecture and take handwritten notes, leave space at the top of your notebook for questions that you may have during lecture. Go to office hour to get questions answered (check them off as you go through them). Worked extremely well for me!
Professor Gomes is extremely intelligent and very caring. I am thankful that I had his class.
Although he doesn't answer questions very well, him and Caporale are literally the most amazing pair up for a class I could ever dream of. Gomes is hilarious, and really wants to make sure everyone is engaged and understanding the class. If you try half as hard as you do in other NPB class in this one, you will do FINE. Tests are all very fair.
First of all, he's not clear at all on the writing assignment as he gives you the topic and you're expected to produce what he's looking for with no criteria whatsoever. He's pretty condescending when you ask questions, which discouraged me from asking. His slides are either paragraphs or figures from studies and not helpful and he speaks too fast
He is awesome!! EXB 110 became one of my favorite classes. The exams are pretty tough especially the final.... It's 6 pages of writing. If you skip classes, then you can't pass this class. You won't miss his class because his lectures are very very interesting. You will enjoy his class.
He is very passionate about the subject and introduce a lot of interesting studies to discuss in lecture. Make sure you go to OH with a clear outline of your papers cause he is not clear on his grading and writing the two papers can be hard. He does offer extra credit where you simply walk as a class around campus.
It's Amayzin.
He is an amazing Professor. Though exams were challenging, he taught the class very well and kept lectures interesting (especially with his jokes!). If you have a chance to take his class, I would definitely recommend it! His class is one of the reasons I switched majors to NPB! :)
Funny lecturer but not very specific with how he taught. Tests were very hard and there was not much prep work given out. "Practice questions" were not at all representative of how the exams were formatted. Does not send out answer keys. The one time he did, the answer key was just pictures of the scantrons but we did not get our midterms back?????
Amazing lecturer. be ready to study he will make you think critically.
Amazing professor! Best professor I've had so far in Davis. Very caring, really cares about students. He is very intelligent and really love what he does. Keep up with his lectures every day and go to his OH! He talks fast so make sure you listen to his podcasts again after class. 100% RECOMMEND taking his class!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Very funny and outgoing in his lectures.
Horrible. He gets so offtrack and talks about material that is irrelevant and briefly goes over concepts that are really complicated. I would never take him again, he explains easy concepts 3x harder than they are and makes connections with stuff that we don't need to know. Honestly, I had such a difficult time learning in his class.
Best professor I've ever had in UC Davis. I love his lecture. He explains things clearly and he's really funny. Really cares about students and very intelligent. I wish he teaches more classes.
Love Dr. Gomes! He's the best. Test questions are fair.
His lectures are quite fast-paced and require you to stay on track the entire time. He is very funny and tell jokes as a comedic relief. Go to his office hours frequently to review materials. His test questions for 101 are extremely straightforward and easy.
Very good professor! NPB 110A is a deceptively hard class, and Dr. Gomez is a difficult teacher. But if you go to the lectures and be attentive you can certainly get a good grade. There is also a nice curve at the end :)
Dr. Gomes is amazyn. He keeps you engaged with the material he's teaching and encourages active learning. The tests are fair and include some questions straight from the practice stuff. Provides extra help during office hours and holds review sessions before each midterm. Learnt a lot from him. Wish he taught the whole course.
Dr. Gomes is an amazing lecturer. He is very intelligent and really cares about students. He is very friendly so go to his OH!! I learned so much from him!
No clear grading. Gave us an assignment for a blog without a rubric and the feedback was so specific and ridiculous. He also tends to go off tangent. He'll lecture off a slide with no words and at the end would say, "but you don't need to know any of that".
He gave us some practice questions before the exam, that was doable. The practice questions he gave us, made us think a little but wasn't all too difficult. However, when the midterm came questions were overly hard/wordy. Overall an okay class, the exam was hard. Grades consisted of the exam, papers, and finals. He doesn't curve so beware
Dr. Gomes has shown so much passion for everything he does and teaches. During this pandemic, he has always tried to inspire us with the material as well as remind us to stay happy. The way he cares about his students is something I've never experienced before. Tough class, but absolutely doable.
Dr. Gomes is really passionate, but goes off topic in lecture which makes it hard to figure out what material is tested and what is his passion. he's a really nice guy, but his test questions were quite tricky and his lectures were a bit hard to follow.
Aldrin is a great professor, but has very tricky questions on exams at times. Overall, the class was pretty amazing.
He's very nice, clearly cares about students. Was not the most clear in his explanations. For the most part, his test questions were straightforward besides a couple of tricky ones. Open to answering questions during class.
He's a good lecturer material-wise. I wish he would stop making weight loss jokes because not everyone has a great relationship with food.
I took NPB 110A with Dr. Gomes this fall quarter, and he is hands down the best lecturer/professor that I've taken so far. He knows how to make his lectures fun, and watchable throughout the duration of the class. Graded on various different assignments, helpful discord and OHs. If you're enthusiastic about the subject then it's a guaranteed A.
Exams in a complete different language compared to what is taught in lectures. Cracks awful dad jokes in the middle of lectures thinking hes engaging. FINAL EXAM dropped me a letter grade. Awful!
Around 10 quizzes, 3 midterms, and a final. The lowest midterm gets dropped. But, this course is a beast, 4 lectures a week and a discussion to tie it all in. Gomes does a great job at entertaining and lecturing the concepts, but his exams are in a different language. Exams are out of 30pts, so very little leeway on making mistakes on the exam. :(
i wasnt a fan. my grade was also not really representative of my overall performance in the class. i was 10-12% above average consistently and didn't even make an A-, which seems a bit ridiculous.
Very passionate about the subject which made lectures engaging, but exams were heavily detailed and sometimes worded confusingly. Quizzes were reasonable. Exams were out of 30 points so not much wiggle room for getting an A (10 pts out of 30 were free response, miss out on just 10 points on the exam and you already have a 20/30 which is a D score).
one of the three professors that taught NPB 101-- quite frankly the best. condensed info down the best, slides follow a logical order, and he actually cares how you are doing (rarity at a UC). take him if u can
There were 3 different lecturers in this course and he was by far the best. Went over information multiple times in different ways to help teach concepts. He genuinely cares for his students - he joined the class discord himself to give advice/answer questions/comfort anxious people. Tough ass course but the best guy for the job by far.
Best professor, hands down. The only professor who gave extra practice material for the finals and even joined class Discord just to explain tough concepts. His lectures are supposedly the hardest out of all the 3 professors, but it was his stuff I was most confident about during finals. Prof. Gomes is really funny too!
Professor Gomes was one of the best professors I've ever had. Genuinely caring professor who fights for student mental health and equality. We had 3 professors for the course, with all being great in their own way, however Gomes went above and beyond to accommodate for student needs. His lectures were engaging and exams were incredibly fair.
How can you not love this prof? He was so caring, thoughtful, and motivating. He really wants to see you succeed and he has such a positive attitude. He only teaches 3 weeks out of the quarter but they were the best 3 weeks of this class. He is the embodiment of what science should be, practical but not nerdy. Thank you professor Gomes!
I wish he taught every single one of my classes, he is incredible!! I have never met a professor so caring or genuine in my time here at Davis. Tough class but he makes it worth it!
best out of the three professors for npb 101. He gives fair practice questions and they reflect the midterm Qs asked.
This professor CARES. Takes time to talk to students, even is on discord till 12/1am talking to students. Was one of the three professors that really fought for the students' curve. This is the nicest professor Ive ever met. Class is rough but his section was easier compared to others. this is the professor i'll remember from UCD. GOATMES ONG GOAT
Took Gomes & Van der Mulen for 110A. Best professor so far. He's VERY active on discord, literally stays up until 1 or 2 am to answer questions. Biggest advice, ATTEND LECTURE. It's not mandatory but helps A LOT if you understand the concepts instead of memorizing. Do the practice tests! Final can be worth 35% of your grade (BEWARE).
Gomes' lectures are quite flashy and funny to watch, but don't give you much information on what you need to know. He'll emphasize the importance of diagrams and concepts but then won't add them on the exam. His questions are focused on very small details. Very caring and active on Discord but when it counts, he's not very reliable as a professor.
This class is hard but Prof Gomes does his best to ensure his students succeed! He is very accessible and tries his best to make class fun with jokes and memes on discord. He is a very understanding and tries his best to listen to what students want, and he curved at the end of class. He is one of the best professors I've had!
Dr. Gomes is an amazing lecturer; he emphasized the little details on his slides and repeated important concepts for our understanding. NPB 101 is difficult and Gomes knows that, so he did his best to motivate and help everyone. He is a very funny and caring person; I'm going to miss his enthusiasm.
Even if NPB is a hard class, he made it enjoyable. I learned a lot even if I got a C. He especially liked to throw in facts about health that made it even more engaging. My only complaint is that the tests not always showed what we learned as there were only 30 questions for about 20 lectures. However, I would take his class again, very caring prof
Amazing professor. Great at explaining complicated concepts, enthusiastic and entertaining in lectures, caring, motivated. His exams can be difficult but he provides plenty of extra practice to help students. Lots of office hours. I would take Gomes over almost any other professor I've ever had. Highly recommend!!! He deserves way higher ratings.
THE BEST STEM PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. He makes his tests super doable and is highly accessible on Discord to answer students' common questions. He made me enjoy everything he lectured.
This professor CARES and is kind and gracious. I ended up taking this class with another class at the same time and day and when I asked the other professor if she could accommodate me and allow me to take the exam at a different time due to the schedule conflict she said no but he said I got you, you don't have to stress or worry about that!
This is the fairest professor in terms of exams. No trick questions, everything from the lecture, not wordy and he also gave us 3 bonus questions on the final, meaning we could get 3 wrong and still get 100% on the exam. It really helped! He's also super caring in terms of health and our well-being.
NPB101 is not a joke. This class is brutal with the sheer amount of content. But, Dr. Gomes is fantastic. No trick questions and is super knowledgeable about the material. He also explains things very clearly and is always willing to help students understand. He made this class so much better. 10/10 would take a class with him again.
Amazing professor! Gave the class a curve even when he didnt need to. Very active in discord. Cares a lot about his students and makes a hard class like this more digestible.
He is a fantastic professor. He uses good and funny examples to explain knowledge in the class, making the lecture really enjoyable. He is also very caring. He responds students questions on discord. His exams are really fair and doable. This is a tough class, but professor Gomes did his best to make me get an A!
Dr. Gomes is thorough, very enthusiastic, and made NPB 101 enjoyable. He explains concepts well and actively answers questions on discord. Class is test heavy, but the discord participation and individual assignment allow for the class to not be 100% exam based. Practice exams and questions provided. I highly recommend taking NPB 101 with Dr.Gomes!
Probably one of the best professors in Davis. Truly cares about his students, makes one of the denses and hardest classes I've taken so far engaging and digestible. Willing to answer questions on discord. Take this class with him!
goat professor, very inspiring and caring, hops on discord to answer questions and is very accessible outside of class. physio is tough but he makes it very manageable. provides practice mc exams and his midterms are very doable. funny and very engaging during lecture, attend his lectures as much as you can
Dr. Gomes is one of the most passionate professors I've ever had the pleasure of having. He explains everything very clearly and gives his students very good advice on how to succeed in his class. His lectures are very engaging. In addition to this, he puts a heavy emphasis on the mental and physical health of students, which is often overlooked.
I don't usually come on here to write reviews unless its to warn people about a bad professor, but Dr. Gomes deserves this. He was genuinely such a good teacher, and he really cared about his students. This class is not easy--you're learning all of physiology in a quarter--but he made it fun and was always around when we had questions. Thanks Dr. G
Amazing professor, his office hours are super chill and actually rewarding. He is super passionate about what he teaches and brings what he teaches into daily applications also. He cares for the students grades and mental wellbeing. I ran into him at panda express once and joked around about panda being a place to study npb101. Hard class though.
Great prof. & extremely accessible since he's always on the class discord and knowledgeable even on the topics he wasn't responsible for. My only gripe was that I wish he'd lecture on more topics, rather than having the other profs take over. They were great, but not as energetic and amazing lecturers as Dr. Gomes
Goated professor that's all you need to know
Gomes is arguably the best lecturer at this whole University. I really wish he taught more because people only came to class when he was lecturing. Other professors should learn from him how to captivate students' attention via lecturing.
Great professor, one of the happiest and chilliest dudes I've ever met. Dr. Gomes had really good insight and stories about his life. We went over everything from financial literacy to mindfulness and he was super knowledgeable in every subject. Graded only on a 2 minute presentation at the end of the quarter. Awesome experience overall
This guy was cool I really liked him, nice, good inspiring and engaging lectures, mess with him heavy. The tests are decently difficult tho, heavy weighted, and with little room for error. I'm prob gonna end the class with like a B+.
Gomes is a charismatic person and inspirational however I thought his tests were not clearly reflected on the material. He would mostly just read off the slides and talks very quickly so it is difficult to know what you should actually study for the tests. His tests were also pretty difficult, lots of self teaching for topics.
Very engaging professor but most of his test questions were from something we briefly went over in class or he asked questions in high level of detail that we did not cover. Mostly multiple choice questions with some free response so there was little room for error. Would not take again since he was hard to understand and had to teach myself a lot.
Dr. Gomes is one of the most entertaining professors I've had. He also actively answers and helps students through Discord, which I find really nice.
absolutely fumbled the final but great prof. midterms were reasonable. just focus on studying learning objectives and you'll be good. curve at the end is great.
