Not too sure about this one
You will struggle, unless you are already a molecular biologist.
Good guy. He trys hard and learns with the rest of us.
It was his first semester here... and I thought he dealt with a once a week 4 hour lecture very well. He got bored, we got bored. Smart, smart man... Has some difficulty explaining, but it will come with time. This guy will challenge you!
get out the dictionary you'll need it -a funny guy ,he'll crack you up.

Super sharp, sometimes too much math and models. But funny and excited about material, which is kind of cute.
Man is brilliant and cute. Great class, great prof.
Outstanding professor. Teaches at Big 10 level, yet cares about you and knows your name. Very matter of fact yet funny. Highly recommend!
Learns with us all. His exams are hard, but he'll really get the noggin crankin'. VERY intelligent, VERY witty, and also VERY good looking. ;)
Makes you know alot of information but is one of the best biology teaches i ever had.
One of the better classes I've taken at Northern. I learned a ton and had a great time as well.
Tests are very hard, but he's willing to explain things if you ask. Strange sense of humor, but atleast he has one. Labs are really interesting.
Great teacher, complicated subject. He interjects humor into many of the lectures that really makes otherwise dry topics bearable. He loves his loons.
This guy cracks me up. Half the reason I go to class is to watch him, quirky but cute. Super sharp, tough material, but just go to him for help. He is eager, friendly and brilliant.
Tests can be tough, but I guess at least they make you think. The labs are really redudant though, a lot of waiting around. I do really like the fact that he knows everyone's names and he is really helpful.
very hard, isn't clear about his lectures. He gets lost and confused. Alot of times he's too busy for his students.
The class material was presented in a very simple form in which you had to think and extract the main ideas out of. Was very willing to assist in extra experiments. However, did seem to be very opininonated and push his political views a little more than I cared for, but nice guy and good teacher.
Awsome class with interisting powerpoints and movie clips in lecture. Grow fruit flies in lab which can be a hassel.
Makes course interesting and fun, tests are mostly essay but he doesn't get very nitpicky--he wants you to extract the main ideas.
Interesting class even though the exams are indredibly hard!! He curves though so it works out. Nice guy, helpful if you don't understand although he expects you to understand the material at a graduate level instead of an interductory undergrad course. Aviod if possible unless you are ready to study harder then you've ever studied before
My favorite teacher at NMU!
Okay - he's a cool guy and makes you laugh, but his tests are ridiculous and need to be re-done. I had an easier time in BI 313 with Dr. Rebers than I did in this class. The tests didn't even cover material from lecture - I don't know where it came from, but he's never wrong, so forget about him throwing a few points your way for his errors
Yeah, the guy is smart, funny and a good teacher. I agree his exams are hard, but they are the first ones I have had that really ask me to integrate material in a new way. One of the best NMU has.
I didn't find his test that hard. He throws one out and the final was taken right off of the first three tests (very simple). Most interesting class I've ever had. But I will say that he is a very busy proff and I had a ridiculous time trying to meet with him for some extra help. He seemed somewhat arrogant ouside of class.
Love everything about his teaching style. I would have never found Cell and Molcular Bio interesting if it wasn't for him. I think he should teach all of the classes I am in..I would go to them and pay attention to everything. He does an amazing job relating to students thinking, and also looks pretty cute while doing it!
Dr. Lindsay is a very good professor, take his classes if you can.
Presents material in a way that is never boring. Lectures are always laid back and fun (as fun as sitting in a lecture can be). My only complaint is that his tests are all short answer and some of the questions are quite nit-picky; but it's a fun class and he's a good looking fellow, so I recommend him.
Fun prof with a great sense of humor. Very fun on lab outings. I went into the class not really caring about the subject (birds) but am leaving as an avid bird-watcher. He's very nice, enjoys his subject immensely, and creates a fun, challenging course. Super-intelligent guy too, you'll learn a lot in his course.
He taught three of my classes, evolution, molecular biology, and genetics. Not only did I learn alot, but I also had a great time. Sometimes the material was challenging (evolution) but he was always ready to help clarify anything during his office hours. Great smile, great laugh, good times. I highly recommend him for any class.
This guy takes a 100 level class and makes it a 400 level class.
Intro Bio ROCKED. Moved fast, but not too fast if you studied and paid attention. Funny lectures and always pushed us to think differently. Hard exams. Not recommended if you want to coast.
Moves through lectures at warp speed. I hear his tests are hard. Other comments say the same thing. He is a funny guy... but i'm not sure how great of a professor he is yet. We'll see...
Dr Lindsay is a very good prof. I hated bio before this class and now it is somewhat enjoyable. I don't even mind going to class. His tests are somewhat difficult, but that is to be expected with a bio class. I would definitly recommend him.
Julie Howard, my lab TA for this class is absolutely HORRIBLE. When asked a question, she cannot provide an answer. Then, after she literally says "I can't help you, just figure it out", she marks you wrong. She failed our entire class on one of the lab reports. She even had the nerve to scream at my lab group when we asked her for help. SHE SUCKS!
Dr. Lindsay is great. He's funny and energetic and really wants everyone to do well. TA Julie Howard, however, doesn't seem to want the same thing. She is unwilling to help you, she'll tell you to do an assignment one way then mark you down for doing what she said... she's horrible. DO NOT TAKE HER LAB CLASS.
Dr. Lindsay is THE best professor I've had in my 4 years at NMU. I had to study for the exams- they are kind of hard, but as long as you read over your notes and look in the book, you'll do fine. He is SO helpful and is willing to answer any questions. I would really suggest taking him- I wish he would teach all the BI classes at NMU.
A very good professor for an introductory level class. I would highly recommend taking his class.
Kept class interesting. Very funny guy really liked his teaching style. His labs really enforced what we learned too! Great class
So Dr. Lindsey can be really nice in lecture, however, if you actually want help from him he will probably just blow you off. His tests are pretty hard, even if you study the book. You don't need to go to lecture though because nothing he says in lecture is important and it is all strait from the book. If you study hard from the book it'll be ok
He is a great lecturer. His class was very interesting and I found myself coming back and needing to tell people what I learned. The only problem was that the tests were very difficult. Make sure you know how to use what you learn
Wonderful teacher who makes material interesting and sometimes funny. Somehow managed to make everyone participate and yet have fun in a 100 person lecture.
Great teacher. He made everything interesting and was always full of energy. I wish i could take him again.
You can tell he really loves what he teaches. The class is difficult and takes hard work but I pulled an A without too much of a problem. I thought the lab was very hard.
This class was a complete waste of time. Lindsey just rambled on and on about things that didn't pertain to evolution. He made us write several papers for only 2 points. The amount of time you spend for this class is ridiculous and he never helps. If you have a computer problem, get it fixed ASAP he will give you a hard time. Computers needed.
I have to say, his tests are very hard however the final pulls all the answers from the previous tests making it very easy to ace. I really enjoyed the enthusiasm and the ability to expand points during lecture.
He is a very intelligent professor but his lectures and lecture slides are pointless. You learn absolutely nothing from going to lecture. The test are horrible and pick out the most obscure details from the book and tests you on that. Also many questions have answers that are close to right but aren't which also makes it difficult. Don't Take Class
Professor Lindsay is a very friendly person and genuinely cares about his students. It is obvious that he is passionate about biology. Read the book for his class because what he lectures about and what is on the exams are not always related.
Dr. Lindsay is one of the best profs I've had at Northern. He is clearly interested in what he teaches and explains the material well. You will have to work pretty hard for an A, though.
Very smart and nice guy. Lots of work on website that goes along with book. And lots of work in general.
He is a smart professor, and very enthusiastic about teaching, but the class average is about 50% on EVERY EXAM. They are very detailed on random topics and his lectures and study guides are pointless. I would NOT recommend him if you value your grades.
Great teacher! Helpful, friendly and interesting!
this guy is a joke. cant teach, rambles and goes off on tangents during lecture that have nothing to do with anything. if you take his class good luck with that. stay away from Essian for lab, he doesnt know if hes coming or going.
Dr Lindsay is a wonderful teacher! His passion for Biology really shines in his lessons. His class is tough, but it's college. He pushes you but is always there to help. Great class!
I read every week and study incredibly hard for this class but like others have said average for exams is about 50%, refuses to give study guides, annoyed when questions are asked and oh ya For BI11 tests are about 500800 points for class. 60kids only 6 scored above a c and 38 people scored d or f. He will ruin your gpa. i read about 8 hrs a week
He simply dosent care, if you ask a question or ask for help he will give you snotty replies how it is not his job. Get ready to study for F s on all of the exams. He wont admit his class format and curriculum is flawed. Probably because Him And Mary Martin need to justify their positions. He cares more about proving he smart than teaching.
Everybody elses comments are just obscure. He wasn't that bad of a Professor. Yeah he makes you work for your grade, but its a college level course trying to get the more dedicated science majors to stay and the not dedicated students to leave. reading in his class is a must. over all he is good and there for you when needed. go to his office hours
Haven't even had him for more than a month and I already hate him. He is a very cool person, but his lectures make no senses and he goes off on tangents that have zero correlation to what is being talked about. He also doesn't give out study guides, so have fun trying to study for tests, and the TAs for the lab classes are complete crap.
It is necessary and demanded that you do bookonline book work ever three days or so. Lots of little quizzes for one point every week.
In this class, you MUST read and do all of the things that are assigned on Launchpad in order to pass with a decent grade. His tests can be difficult, but if you read, take notes, and memorize the Learning Curves, you will be totally fine. Lectures aren't really all that helpful, but he does do in-class assignments for attendance grades sometimes.
Very intelligent person who clearly has a passion for biology. His tests are not that bad and you should definitely pass if you understand the concepts completely, he will not ask questions about random details. The final was very easy as well.
Great Professor. Super fun to be in his class, and you learn a LOT. He can be pretty tough, and you really have to pay attention to keep up, but he makes everything interesting so it's worth it. And as long as you try, you don't even have to do great on exams to pass. AND he doesn't require a textbook, so you save a ton of money!
One of the best professors I have ever had, very animated, fun, and dedicated to your success.
I would look forward to Prof Lindsay's class as a pick me up after other, harder classes. The textbook is easy, helpful, and online, and there would be tests and quizzes on Educat. No homework!!! (Outside of lab.) Get ready to hear about birds, because ornithology is his fave! I took it as a liberal studies; would recommend.
He is a horrible teacher. When going to ask him for help or how to improve his only response is, is that it is just points. He is rude and condescending. He was the worst teacher I have ever had. It is so hard to learn in his class even if you do the assigned reading and you study hard. I even went to the study groups HE started and got NO help!
Overall, Lindsay wasn't a bad guy, he just wasn't a great professor. He would get off topic easily. I feel as thought I barely learned anything in class. The online text is helpful. I wasn't too impressed with his lectures and I had multiple friends ask him for help and he didn't do too much.
Tests are very hard. I'm a biology major and I struggled in his class. He does however drop one test grade which. Plus include the final, so if you do well enough on the first four exams you do not need to take the final. He does not give homework or study guides.
While this class certainly wasn't a cakewalk, it isn't a problem if do your part. Lectures aren't mandatory, but I highly recommend them, as he expands upon ideas in the (online and free!) text, making them easier to understand. Always willing to take questions in class and does an excellent job answering. Not an easy A, but worth the effort.
Awesome guy, very enthusiastic, but incredibly hard to work with. Although he welcomes his students to his office hours, they're time sensitive and he's not easy to talk to. I've asked him for help and advice on how to study for his exams and he completely dismissed my question.
He seems to be better teaching his higher level classes but HORRIBLE in lower level, even though in the beginning of the class he assumes the majority to be freshman. He is unwilling to work with you, doe not help explain and his in-class lectures and online course work do not match. HORRIBLE teacher unless you are researching with him
None of the material he goes over in lecture is on his exams. I failed two because I studied the completely wrong thing.
Dr. Lindsay is incredibly devoted to our success as students and really cares about the course material. An inspiring and encouraging professor!
Dr. Lindsay is a great person. His lectures are full of life and he talks to the class, not at the class. He has 5 exams total and you can drop one of them. He's a tough grader, but low exam grades won't exactly make you fail.
It is very hard to pay attention during his lectures. He isn't the most interesting and at times he goes off topic. DO NOT GET HIM STARTED ON WATER. The man loves it and will go on a rant. There are constant online quizzes and the exams are hard to study for. He is good person overall but I personally would not take him again.
Don't count on him to help you if you're struggling with a topic, he'll tell you to reread the online book. Lectures have NOTHING to do with the exams; I stopped going and did better on the exams by reading extra books, but I shouldn't spend this much time on 4 credit intro course. I absolutely love science and the lab is boring. Got an A though.
Lectures have nothing to do with the exams which makes focusing on exam content very difficult. I took 17 credits this semester and this was my worst class. Seemed ridiculous that this class was hard. It is not that the content is hard, it is the fact that Lindsay writes the exams in such a poor manner. It seems like weed out class.
Everything about Lindsay was great except for his exams, they were hard even after studying for hours on end.
This professor is really passionate about what he teaches. He really cares about students and does everything in his power to help out students when needed. However, he doesnt give much practice when preparing for tests and his tests are vague. You literally have to be an expert in the chapter to get an A on his exams and if not, then sorry.
the exams are ridiculously hard. You have to do a lot of outside research other than that he's okay.
Dr. Lindsay is very knowledgeable in his field, and although his lectures are generally enjoyable with good info, they do not match the test very well. I felt his lectures did not adequately prepare us for the exams which were much harder than I expected. If you work hard, this class is do-able, but it is not a breeze!
Prof Lindsay is passionate about biology, and this is apparent in his lectures. Although most of the test material reflects what is in the online textbook, understanding the examples from lecture is necessary to do super well on the tests. Furthermore, his analogies in lectures help with understanding the concepts along with being entertaining.
Lecture is pointless, I started doing better on the tests once I stopped coming to his lectures. Got an A and stopped going after the first month
Alec Lindsay is a joy to have as a professor. Probably the best thing was how he interacted with his students through Zoom meetings. I still need to get him a picture of the painted buntings we have around! The guy is super relatable and very passionate about biology, and especially about birds!
All you have to do is listen to lecture, and he makes them very entertaining. He is very passionate and it's refreshing.
Lecture was amazing, he really gave examples to help us understand the materials. Even when COVID-19 hit, lectures were still great and he went out of the way to give us extra materials to help us understand the material.
Dr. Lindsay is a great professor. His lectures are very entertaining and informative, and I can say I learned a lot from them. His tests are difficult, however. Study hard! Anyways, Lindsay is very kind and good to get to know on a more personal level; he also really cares about his students and their success even if he has nearly 200 of them.
Dr. Lindsay made my first semester at NMU amazing. His lectures will engage you and make you want to participate. Hes also such a genuinely good person; he really makes you feel appreciated in a big intro level class.
kinda a lot of work but hes really good about dropping assignments that hurt your grade. i didnt mind the class but i asked him a question at the beginning of the semester and he was super rude so i never asked anything again and was pretty much on my own the whole time
Nothing but rude. This was supposed to be an intro to Biology class was like an intro to Biochemistry class. So he expected everyone to already know about Biochemistry. I went to his office hours once and he was very rude, saying "you should know this already". He may come of as nice/funny in lectures but its a mask. 0/10 this mans is terrible.
Lindsay's intro class is not easy. His exams are difficult and there is a lot of work (drops about 30% of grades though!). However, Lindsay is an amazing professor. Stay on top of your work and pay attention in lectures and you can pass (even with mediocre test grades) He is a funny guy with entertaining lectures. Always has a bit to perform.
I enjoyed him as an individual, but the rushing through slides made it difficult to follow. He has plenty of resources ready for students, he has set times of availability to answer questions. Read the textbook, the online assignments are so vital. The tests are kind of stressful, but then again, I'm not that good with cells/DNA/molecular science
Super tough course but overall great professor. He has a tendency of getting a little sidetracked during lectures but its because he's really passionate about what he does, and it shows. He doesn't take attendance but it is super important to show up and read the book. I would not have passed otherwise!
He's very enthusiastic about birds to the point of getting distracted during lecture. Provides good feedback for assignments. Takes a while to grade things. Make sure you prepare for lab properly, since binoculars are a must and weather conditions will not keep this guy from his birds.
he is a stuck up no good proffessor who takes pride in his students failing exams. avoid at all costs
Dr. Lindsay is a very good professor. You can tell that he is passionate about what he does, and genuinely cares about the success of his students. If you are caught between taking BI111 and BI112 - make sure that you take BI111 with Dr. Lindsay. Do the work, study a little bit, and you will do fine. This courses grading criteria is more than fair.
I dropped my bio minor because of this class
The class is tough and you have to study lots outside of class. This is fine as it's college. What isn't is his attitude problem. Calls you out in front of the class for not paying attention, makes you feel stupid in office hours, and leaves condescending comments on exams. He's nice as long as it's not class related or you're doing extremely well.
Dr Lindsay acts very different in class, but outside of class if you try and ask for help at his office hours he is not helpful and very rude and very rude when you email him and his grade feedback is very condescending. He also rushes through the slides during lecture and basically all he does is read off the slides.
He straight up said he can't teach and I would 100% agree. He likes to ramble especially about things that aren't important and waste time. Some stuff that was on the exam was not mentioned in class or if it was very briefly. Thinks study guides make you "too prepared" for the tests. The homework took forever and it didn't seam to help me.
