Very helpful when asked (especially during office hours). Very strict when it comes to homework and labs. A difficult A, but somewhat possible.
He's a great teacher, extremely helpful, really cares about how the students respond to homeworks and exams, etc. His tests are reasonable, and his lectures are pretty good. The thing about him is that unlike other teachers he actually cares about how every student performs in class and thats priceless. If you go to IVC, take class with him fosho
I don't what everyone is talking about because this teacher is great, always willing to help in the office hours and fair in grading, if you re going to take physics its professor Sim all the way.
If I had to say one thing about Professor Sim, it's that he tries hard to make his class good. Although I feel like his lectures could have been a little bit better at times, I think he is a very fair grader when it comes to tests and quizzes and homework. If you work hard and give your best, there's no reason why you shouldn't succeed.
Lectures are interesting. His grading system is fair. I'm not sure why everyone else rated him so low. Don't listen to the haters this is actually a really good physics class
It seems like people that took 4A/B with Sim had a bad experience but I had a pretty good experience with him in 2B. Compared to my other Phys teachers he is a saint. He was helpful in class, funny and I felt his exams were fair based on what we did in class and the homework. He did helpful practice exams and reviews before every test.
He's a nice professor. He really helps his students to understand the material. He does extended office hours usually before exams. Attendance is not mandatory, but there is a quiz once a week and you don't want to miss that. If you want to do well in the class, go to class and go to office hours.
love the teacher. he was one of the best physics teacher i've ever had. he loves to teach, and if you ask him questions he'll find a way to answer it for you as clear as he can.
Alec cares a lot about his students and is very passionate and knowledgeable about Physics. I really enjoyed his class, and thought he presented things in a fair and consistent manner. His tests weren't too bad, and if you study and actually do the homework (and don't just rely on provided solutions), you should do fine.
Nice but tough professor. Requires homework and written lab reports. Lectures are long and mostly theorems, few practice hw problems. Tests are tough. You need to read the book to understand his class. Speaks quickly but will answer questions and is a reasonable and smart guy. Definitely not a pushover class. But physics is hard.
Alec is something else, its a tough class, and he is always there for help, you just have to speak up, but you have to do the labs, and hw, but the tests are hard, so you have to read the book, and sometimes use some other resources such as youtube. His notes are helpful, and he is a great guy, the fact that he imitates shaggy, star trek. Cool guy!
Prof Sim's class was good. He really wanted to help the students and make them happy. Tests were more on the difficult side. I really liked his class especially since he makes the class fun. My only gripes were that the labs didn't work most of the time, there were a lot of typos on his tests, and he's inconsistent. Other than that, a chill class.
Professor Sim is fun, really does try to help you either during class or at office hours. His tests are pretty hard. You dont really have much for notes as you just sit there and listen to his lecture, you come outta class confused, labs didnt work. Inconsistent with what he says and grading, as he graded the other class lighter for doing worst.
Pretty cool dude. If you do all your work and never miss an assigned hw or lab then you have a good chance of passing the class. Make sure you understand the hw and not just copy it from solutions manual. If you put in the work you will get at least a B. Im terrible at physics but ended up with a B b/c I did all assigned hw. Labs need 2 be perfect
He's too concerned with what students think of him. Focuses all his efforts on trying to be likeable, which makes the lectures annoying. He skips all the examples without doing them. The only people who are able to follow along with his lectures are those who read the chapter prior to class.
Nice guy, cares about his class. He'll help you if you ask him for it.
I really like his teaching style. He gives you many opportunities to get points in both lab and lecture. He keeps an open and inclusive environment in the classroom and shows a genuine interest in student feedback. He also jokes around and keeps the class lively. He's a tremendous asset to IVC. Highly recommended.
I took 4b and 4c with him. he is a very good prof, although sometimes he makes mistakes, but he corrects them as soon as he/we find them if you think that his class is hard, well yea, its a college level physics course. after taking his classes, i feel more prepared to transfer into a 4year engr program getting a B is VERY easy, an A requires work
Sim is an amazing professor. He really does try to make us all understand physics and really cares about his students. Make sure to do all the hw assigned and study it well, and you will recieve at least a B in class. Try not get frustrated if you don't understand lecture, it's normal to not understand it. Do labs great, and study the hw.
For a physics prof he's great, but not perfect. Often times he will skip the core concepts of the chapter, like what an inductor ACTUALLY is, and go straight into the difficult calculus based mathematics of it. He does this a lot and it can be really confusing. But succeeding is easy. His tests and quiz's are literaly just HW problems, so do the HW
Pretend to be smart but he's not.He tries to teach physics with calculus and he failed miserably. Sometimes, he was taught by a student in class on math. He is kinda teacher who dont know how to teach but put hard problems in the exams so that he looks great to students. Even I can teach better than him. Avoid him at all costs.
I've never met a professor who cared about his students and his class so much. The class is hard but that's because of the subject, and not so much because of his teaching skill. Prepare to do the work and spend a lot of time writing up the lab report. Also do the homework. The way he grades tests and everything is very clear.
I initially disliked him first, but as I am getting near the end, I must say that Prof Sim is a great physics teacher who not only is passionate about his work but cares, too, about his students. Physics is a very tough class so you will get what you put in. Testsquizzes are easy but labs are tedious. B is very easy to get in class!
Sim is sooo amazing, he can make the hard class become incredibly fun. He expects us to finish all the homework, although it is not mandatory, but if you don't do the hw, you might not able to get an A. Test are easy if you do the homework, and he gives partial credits. Spend some time talking to him, you will learn a lot!
Dr Sim is the best ! He truly understands about everything he is teaching and he is passionate about it. You MUST do all the work to get an A since this is not an easy class. However, if you take any of his Physics courses you'll learn a lot.
Best physics professor I've had. He'll Make you work hard for your grade, so this class is not designed for lazy students ! I'm glad I took him
Dr. Sim is gifted ,smart and the best professor on earth he loves his students and he cares about them do your homework and study truly for his class and Dr. Sim will never let you down I really love him and respect him as a very fair ,honest and scientist person
I partly dropped this class because of him. Sure he was helpful, but he was also pretty rude at times. Frequently kept getting frustrated with the class. He is very interested in physics, but his constant frustration made it hard for me to learn physics, which is my weakest subject. Only take him if physics is your interest or major.
To begin with, physics is not an easy subject. But Dr. Sim is definitely one of the best here to help you. Besides his kind grading criterions, Dr. Sim cares his students so much. It is really hard to imagine a professor who drives one hour every day to school just for his students. Take his class and pay efforts; I am sure you will not regret it.
Not recommended because he is following Komine's policy. If you want to take his class you should teach yourself . He is helpful and pretty rude at time. Specially, when he is doing his ocd stuff. If he doesn't recognize you it would be better to get good grades in other words spacing out of him is the right thing if you are forced to take him.
Used to be one of my favorite professors at IVC; however, he changed a lot this semester. He went from being motivating and inspiring to tough and unsympathetic. He thinks his class was too easy just because the average on his tests wasn't below 50. You were never an easy teacher Sim , you were a good one who made me believe in myself.
unorganized, not helpful, not clear. Terrible with grading, he did not even give us any of the labs back. Lectures didn't help so I had to read the text. Lectures are also confusing bcuz they are based on the previous book (university physics), so are the exam questions. Not helpful when asking questions and makes you uncomfortable.
Don't bother studying hard for this class , because at the end of the day , your grade depends on whether he likes you or not. You could work your butt off all semester and get the same grade as someone who Failed half the tests and did no labs .
Extremely well educated man that can sometimes be unorganized. Really willing to help students if he sees him or her work hard. Very meticulous about lab write ups. Exams, including final, are only worth 50% of the grade. Gives a ton of partial credit on tests.
Good luck if you are taking his Physics level 2 courses. He brags about his prideful "NASA" job. Lots of rules and points deduction especially on the lab reports. May be suitable for students who like to be controlled by their professors.
He really cares if you understand the material, will find fun ways to teach you difficult subjects and I really appreciated that. Super well versed in his subject & you can tell he loves what he does. I can see why some think he is difficult, but if he is putting so much effort to teach you is only fair you do put in effort to understand &do work.
This class isn't for the weak. If you can't take the heat, avoid. If you can take the heat, you will learn more than you have in any other class.
Pros: Smart, can be funny, often excited to teach. Quizzes are basically HW, part of exam is HW questions as well. Gets creative during lectures. Cons: Can be rude needlessly, hard to reach outside of class. Rushes thru lectures, doesn't like answering HW/lab questions, over-complicates lab analysis (didn't learn anything from it).
I really regret not listening to this man during projects/class. if you have the time, listen to this guy, He is funny, smart, organized and cares so much for the everyday student. Honestly, he has qualities every educator should strive for, and i miss him now that i transferred to a 4 year university.
He's a cool and quirky guy, but when it comes to his class, he's very strict. Some days he's chill and some days he's rude. Quizzes every week consisting of one of the many homework problems. Have to basically memorize all formulas for all possible problems on quiz. All tests get a one page formula sheet. Final is 15 questions from the homework.
He is a smart guy, but he does not know how to teach the class to students. Physics is a hard subject and he just assumes that many of us already know the material coming into the class. Nothing is ever graded on time, he still has half the labs and an exam to grade and the final is in 2 days. Come to lectures because there are quizzes.
Professor Sim teaches his classes using lectures based on the text book. Attendance is pretty much required in all physics classes. He loves to joke around in class, but at the same time can be incredibly serious. His tests are tough, but you might be able to use a cheat sheet. Grade is dependent on attendance, quizzes, labs, and exams.
Everything has to be exactly the way he wants it or you wont do well in the class. However, he's terrible at explaining what he wants and makes everything more complicated than it needs to be. But you can still do well if you just do all the homework, don't skip lab/quiz days, and use the cheat sheets wisely.
He is really picky and tough , I didn't like the lab that I had with him at all. I lost all the points because the name of my lab report didn't have under line and my role in it! You would not get a good grade with this professor for sure!
Electricity and Magnetism are hard topics to begin with and Professor Sim does his best to help students really understand the material. The exams are HARD AF but you can still get an A with perfect HW/Quiz and Lab report scores. Do the HW and double check your lab reports before turning it in. Show up to lecture and visit office hours if you can.
Sim is great, he really is. Lectures are super engaging and he offers a lot of help during labs. On the first day he will give a big intimidating speech about how you have to be absolutely perfect when writing your long lab report but it isnt that bad LOL. Its really just to see whos serious about the class, so dont let it scare you.
Make no mistake, Sim is HARD. But he's still the best professor in the physics department because he's genuinely passionate about physics and actually cares if you understand it. Go to office hours, ask questions, and he'll go out of his way to help you (and get your labs reviewed before you turn them in. He tells you exactly what he grades for).
No thanks. Just no. He's incredibly loud and insecure about his lectures. He always asks if the lecture is making sense every 5 minutes. A good professor doesn't ask this. He's rude and disrespects his students. He treats this class as if it were some 7 unit class when it's only worth 4 units. Avoid at ALL costs
He is a smart guy who knows his stuff, and his lectures are pretty good. My only complaint is that there are many things he assumes you would know even though not many do, and also lectures in a very high level that it made it hard for me to follow most of the time, as someone who's not good in Physics. Ask questions during lecture, It will help
Don't get me wrong, Sim is insanely smart, but he can't teach at all. He assumes that you already know the content in the class. He likes to test you on questions that he never goes over. Strict on how labs are done, but his manuals are the worst. Very moody and mean if you aren't a girl. Avoid if this is your first E&M class and you want to learn.
Dr. Sim is an amazing professor. He cares a lot about teaching his students, and makes sure his lectures are understood. Despite being quite busy as the department head, he was available every weekday during the hard closure. Yes, the class is hard, and I assume thats why the bad reviews are written. But he is one of the best you could find!
He's very knowledgeable about physics. He does give a lot of partial credit on exams and the exams themselves are half homework problems. He requires a lot for the labs but doesn't grade too harshly. If his class is online be prepared to have little communication and check the website often. Quizzes weekly but those are usually taken from hw.
During COVID, he assigns homework via WileyPlus, which changes the numbers on textbook problems. Quizzes were weekly, and we had one midterm and a final, which mostly came from homework problems (numbers changed of course). Midterm and final are on Wiley as well (not remotely proctored), but you need to submit written work for a grade.
This professor is by far one of most caring professors I ever taken. He understands the difficulties of what going on right now in COVID. He genuinely cares for his students and will given them a good chance to pass the exams and class as whole. He grading scale is more than fair and will give a great chance to atleast get a B. Would recommend!
Average teaching techniques. This professor does not lecture during meetings but requires that you watch the lecture during this time. I am not against this teaching style but the lectures that this professor gives does not relate properly to the homework or labs. You will spend many hours self-learning so make sure you have the discipline.
Sim is a hard man to love. His labs are tedious, his tests hard, his lectures long, his homework longer, & his policies are logical yet unreasonable at times. However, he is organized, hard-working, & cares about his students' learning. He's a slow grader & a poor lecturer. Focus on reading the textbook & writing clear HW solutions and you'll pass.
Dr. Sim needs to do better as the department chair and push to make this class 5 units. Until then, he simply should not be treating PHYS4B as a 5 unit class. Be ready to spend 40 hrs+ a week over summer. He is a mediocre lecturer, has unclear grading criteria, but makes the A very attainable if you do well on all the homework, labs, and quizzes.
Exams have a mean of 50%
Professor Sim, is one of the best professors Ive ever had, I had his 4A class on Spring 2021, he is so knowledgeable and I was hopping to take his 4B but as I transferred, I couldnt take it.
As someone else mentioned, this class has way more content required of it than a 4 unit class should. Two 4 hour classes a week, 2-3 hours of recorded lecture that you need to watch outside of class, somewhat intensive labs that are difficult to start/figure out due to lack of directions, and another few hours of homework.
+Gives a LOT of partial credit -Gets frustrated if nobody immediately replies to him when he asks a question. -His lectures (prerecorded, must watch in addition to attending zooms) are too long and often unhelpful or leave out details. -I need to google the solutions to homework problems since he does not teach us how to solve them ourselves.
Honestly a great professor! Loves what he's doing and it makes the content being learned very fun because of his enthusiasm. He's very fair when it comes to grading. Just do your work and you'll be fine!
Doesn't grade any labs until the semester ends(no feedback to improve your work), forgets to edit his HW assignments(sometimes changes them after they're due), adds questions on his final that aren't from the HW (said the final would consist of only HW questions), and told us Exam1 was on Chp. 21-25, but tested Chp. 21-26 without any of us knowing.
if you don't do well test-taking wise then please take someone else. He literally boasted how his 4A students are literally failing his class. Decent lecturer but his exams are nearly impossible to do, even with a cheat sheet. find better professors outside of IVC
Wastes a ton of time during lecture doing derivations and proofs where the actual content you are tested on is pretty much just math and problem solving; so you go into tests unprepared on how to do math and problem solving. He really needs to spend time on doing lots of practice problems with you in class but he doesn't.
The professor clearly didn't put much effort into this class. The material was pretty disorganized, and we didn't receive lab/exam/quiz grades for weeks. Most would realize the grading was quite rushed, which caused a lot of points to be lost. Also, he said the final would be from the HW only, but it had a big portion totally unrelated to the HW :\
He can not teach. Lectures are a waste of time and his tests do not reflect anything you have seen. Does not care about his class and takes forever to grade with no feedback. Do yourself a favor and take this class with someone who actually knows physics.
Sim is one brilliant guy, but the lectures are long and are packed with information. Tests were possible but very difficult . Labs are excessively long and lab reports had to be made from scratch most of the time. Bro did not grade any labs until the last week of class but will almost always give 100%. His class takes a lot of effort for an A.
I honestly have no idea why last semester's 4B reviews were so harsh. Sim is one of the most enthusiastic professors you'll ever meet, always gives relevant lectures, and grades leniently. You don't even need to read the book. Most of the grade comprises labs (40%), and they're freebies if you follow his formatting guides. Don't skip class.
Just here to up Alec Sim's review no clue who is rating him do low. Best Physics professor ever literally makes everything so understandable and he genuinely cares about your performance in class. I would take him for 3b as well.
The professor himself is a kind and cool dude always willing to help work out a problem. The issue lies with his course being very disorganized and him always changing his mind week in and out. I didn't enjoy his lectures because they would leave me more confused. Instead if you do decide to take him take advantage of the homework and textbook!
Dr Sim has the enthusiasm of a good teacher but very few of the practices. He is difficult to approach and intentionally puts errors in his lectures in hopes students will catch them. He is blisteringly smart but desperately needs to reconsider some of his teaching habits.
Sim clearly cares about his students and wants whats best for them. He is very enthusiastic about physics and his love and passion for the subject rubs off. The only issue with his course was the difficulty of navigating his canvas. Do your homework and take advantage of his office hours. You will learn a lot.
Sim does care about his students, and cares deeply about teaching. However, his teaching methods can be very confusing and overly complicated, often starting with overly complicated examples. He often skimps over complicated formulas, and gets frustrated and annoyed if you don't understand a topic or ask questions about topics he considers easy.
Professor Sim is super passionate about physics and he is smart. Midterm exams are 2 from homework problems and 2 from homework ideas but a bit expanded. Final exam is from homework problems. Lab grades are imp
Professor Sim is super passionate about physics and he is smart. Midterm exams are 2 from homework problems and 2 from homework ideas but a bit expanded. Final exam is from homework problems. Lab grades are important, so make sure to get 100% on each of them. Although 4B lectures are pretty tough but he explains them in a good way which is helpful.
Overall cool dude, except if hes in a bad mood (50/50). he does not like phones and late people. exams were pretty ok, just do the hw and get a basic understanding for them. I will warn his voice is monotone, which makes lectures kind of hard to listen to, but hes very passionate about physics. if you have a qstion, he will give a great answer.
Probably the best professor I've had in college. Perfect combination of funny and smart and he cares about his students and will modify his teaching style based on feedback. He even goes so far as to teach different hours of the same class differently to work with the specific class's preference. If you can get in his class 100% do so.
He really set me up for Physics 4B - FBD, understanding torque and potential/kinetic energy is really paying dividends.
Super funny and educated professor, you can tell he's super passionate about physics and its so enjoyable to experience. Makes physics 4B a breeze with good lectures and homework. Homework and quizzes (weekly) 20%, labs 40%, tests 40% of grade. Tests have some homework questions. Super nice and always willing to help!
Good lectures. Tip from me- DO THE HOMEWORK and make sure you understand the solutions. Wasn't very helpful during office hours so had to self study to figure things out. Makes some mistakes during lecture and in the solutions so pay close attention and ask questions. Gets frustrated when you ask questions.
Quizzes & Exams will be heavily based on HW. Weekly attend his office hour to get explanation of difficult HW questions. He's a fair grader if you study homework problems. His lectures are fun, and he modifies his teaching to match up with the class's preference.
He was dealing with many personal issues this semester, hindering him from performing his best. He rarely shows up to his own listed office hours. The weekly quiz is one question from the HW some are hard, and some are intuitive. His lectures are very monotone and fast-paced because we could only afford one meeting per chapter. Lenient grader tho.
Despite issues outside of class, he did make an honest effort to teach what he is clearly passionate about. Be ready for dad jokes and other quirky comments, he's quite literally full of them. Weekly quizzes are easy since they're based on the easier homework questions, but the labs are almost impossible without some "creative" interpretation.
Very educated and funny. Quizzes are one easy question from hw. Exams reflect the hw and materials in class. The final was 10 questions from all of the hw. I got an F on the 1st exam but he allowed us to correct our exams and earn half of the points we lost (since everyone did so bad) so I got a B. Got an A on final so I ended the class with an A.
I kind of wish I learned things more clearly and in-depth but I'm forgiving of the fact that he was going through things this semester and still did his best. His exams and homework reflect the material taught and challenge/reward the students. I would recommend him for STEM people who want a medium-difficulty STEM course.
Professor Sim is very passionate about physics. Lectures are little boring but they have good information. Wish he went more into detail about stuff but still learned something. Tests are pretty hard but final is light. Show up to Labs (25%) One tip is KEEP UP WITH HOMEWORK AND UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ON THEM!
at first, i had HELLA beef with him with how he graded my exams unfairly and his overall vibes. he comes off kinda harsh, but after talking to him more, i grew to appreciate him. he hand writes his lecture notes (not slideshows) which is always preferred imo. if you stay on top of hw then getting an A is easy peasy. he sometimes meows.
Sim's a chill guy and def cares abt his students. Very passionate about physics and knows what hes talking about. Reasonable and let us get half our points back on the first exam. The exams are hard but doable as long as u study. The final is free since it was just direct from HW. Labs are easy and are 25% of ur grade. Easy but not a free A.
Physics is challenging, but Prof. Sim makes it enjoyable with his knowledge. His office hours are helpful, but on top of that he supports students. Learn the fundamentals in his lecture notes and homework; you'll guarantee a high B on exams. Labs are straightforward, but don't use your phone or cause distractions as he will give extra exam problems
Professor Sim is the best and most inspirational professor I've had at IVC. His lectures are very meticulous and he does his best to make sure everyone understands the material presented during lecture. Exams aren't TOO difficult as long as you re-do homework problems and understand them. Overall, superb professor and a MUST TAKE for Physics 4B.
CONS: - Always moody - Gets snarky if you ask questions - Test Averages were always failing - Disorganized - Terrible at teaching in my opinion - Got mad when I called him out for misgrading my assignment PROS: - He curves lots only because everyone would fail if he didn't - I heard his 4B is okay - Class is okay if you already know the material
I tried my best to stick with Professor Sim's 4A class in spring. I did well on the first exam (90% with corrections), but I couldn't keep up with his teaching style. Lectures are too fast and always align with HW, but it might help if you took physics in HS (I didn't). I spent countless hours self-teaching. Over half of my class dropped.
Took 4B over summer. I'm not good at calc or phys & never took phys in high school, but almost got an A. 12 chapters, 8-12 hw problems per chapter, 1 quiz per chapter on a random easy hw problem. tbh, I didn't understand lecture at all, & self-taught w/ the free textbook pdf. Sim says hw/exams are based on lecture, but I didn't see much correlation
Professor Sim was not a bad teacher, but he can sometimes be unorganized. The structure of the lectures is inconsistent because he usually comes up with what to write on the spot. He also made many changes to the labs throughout the semester. If you haven't taken physics in high school, you will need to do a lot of studying outside of class.
Goes fast all the time even when the whole class is confused, lost, behind. Very disorganized and bad at teaching and lectures. Everyday he tries something new, very inconsistent in everything. Very moody, gets annoyed or mad when asked questions. Everything is on desmos and does very little handwritten problems. Only 18 people were left in class.
He's just misunderstood man.. There is no one wittier than this guy on this campus. If he can see that you are trying than he will reciprocate it back to you. Takes a bit of getting used to but so worth it. Only physics professor here that genuinely teaches the subject for the subject than for an exam.
For students who think scientifically, Sim offers in-depth lectures and hands on labs that really dive deep into the 4B concepts. And for students just trying to survive the class for credit, Sim's content also simplifies the calculus that most other professors include in their courses. Tests/quizzes come directly from his homework.
Sim is great and passionate about physics. However his helpfulness to questions is mediocre, he would often respond in a condescending way that made you regret asking a question. His lectures are long, and his homework is difficult (good prep tho). He often spends too much time in derivations than explaining problem solving techniques. Self teach.
