She was a terrible teacher. She had no idea what she was talking about. She made so many mistakes and was not willing to admit she was wrong when we corrected her. In her practice exam, she had a mistake in every question so it was not helpful. Her lectures were not helpful with the lab because they were unrelated. AVOID!
You only see her once a week to lecture about the lab. I thought she did well and showed calculations well so you could reference them while in the lab. I think she's the only 208 lecturer so you have to take her, but don't worry too much because she only gives and grades the final, nothing else. Nice lady. Go to class!!!
This lady is horrible. First off, she really is smart. Unfortunately you would never know it though. She makes mistakes during every class. She acts very nervous and uncomfortable while teaching, and she NEVER finishes class on time. She saves the info most pertainent to the lab until the end and never gets through it all. Teaching is not for her.
She is not the greatest. She makes lots of mistakes and has to back track and correct herself all the time. Her lectures are hard to follow. She always runs out of time. The experiments are harder though, if you skip lecture.
She seems to be very unorganized and not very helpful at all. My whole class got something on a lab wrong because she gave the wrong equation.
Worst Prof of my college career thus far! Constant mistakes/omissions in her lectures. She always seemed confused about her own material. Her lab manual: rubbish and contains many errors. Her grading: harshly unfair. Her exam study guide contained blatant mistakes. She gave us 50 minutes for a 15+ question exam, which half the class did not finish.
Great....at making the entire class hate Chemistry. Constant mistakes and bumbling during her lectures, and she never managed to cover the material. Her exam study guide was full of errors, and she expected us to complete a 2-hour exam in 50 minutes.
Seems to know a lot, but just can't quite get it across in her lectures. That said her lectures are almost entertaining, due to the number of mistakes made within. Never made it through one without at least a couple errors. The final is not bad, just go over the practice exam. It is quite long however. Otherwise easy class and an easy A.
Worst professor I have had so far. Constantly making mistakes during lectures, and when students pointed out mistakes, it always took her a little while to understand what she did wrong. That being said, her class is extremely easy. There are no quizzes; I went to the first clss for the syllabus and the alst one for the final and easily got an A
terrible class. the lecture did nothing to supplement the lab, and i found they were very boring. if you would like to keep decent grades and keep an interest in chemistry, i recommend not taking this teacher.
Most boring class ever. Reads the lectures like a robot, and makes many mistakes that people have to correct. Lecture material only accounts for about 20% of the test, rest come from the book problems which she doesn't go over. Avoid this class if you can.
Bad professor! She makes lots of mistakes. Seems like she knows what she is supposed to be teaching but only in her head. She can't seem to explain it well and without mistakes. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES.
Terrible, not helpful and boring. Her lectures were dreadful and full of mistakes.
Awful,, full of mistakes, it makes her lectures completely pointless bc she cant communicate at all.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Her entire lecture is taken straight from the book including example problems, and she can never explain what she's talking about or how to work out a problem because all she did was copy it from the book. I highly recommend you find someone else for chemistry.
She made numerous mistakes. It's like they made a history teacher teach chem. She had no idea what she was doing. At least a few times a class a student would correct her.
She made numerous mistakes. It's like they made a history teacher teach chem. She had no idea what she was doing. At least a few times a class a student would correct her.
Horrendous teacher. Called me rude when I calmly suggested we be able to redo an assignment when she failed to give us the needed equations in time for the due date. Never prepared for lecture, wastes time on pointless tangents and whines about the lectures being too short. Pretty sad when 1st term chem students have to correct her numerous errors.
Absolutely horrible. Asking questions in class is useless, as the only answer you'll get is, "I don't know, I'll have to check the book. I'll let you know next class." Except she'll never let you know. Finad another professor and attend their lectures, don't even bother showing up in class. It's a total waste of time.
it seemed to me that this "teacher" had a vague idea of what she was "teaching". it was almost like she expected you to read her mind. from the first day it was obvious that this lady would have rather been in the lab then helping her students, i doubt she could teach a dog how to breath. smart lady but not a teacher.
during lab lectures, she didn't really keep on topic. she often strayed and it didn't make sense or help for the actual lab. she was overall confusing. i was really scared i was going to get a bad grade but i managed a pretty solid a but thats because i worked really hard. my advice if you take her: DO GOOD ON THE LAB REPORTS. like really good!
Professor Powe is very kind and understanding. She knows very well the subject that she teaches. She clearly explains everything and provides plenty of examples. I never understood chemistry until I had her as a professor. She is wonderful!
There is absolutely no reason to go to Dr. Powe's class. If you choose to go to lecture, the only thing that will happen is you will leave confused and furious that your tuition payments are going towards this horrible teacher. Rambles, reads directly from powerpoints, NEVER finishes the lecture, rarely even finishes half. DO NOT TAKE. DO NOT TAKE.
Never attended her class, went to another professors lecture. However, if you're a chem major and find it easy to teach yourself, she now gives practice exams which are very helpful and her tests are easy. If you're not a chemistry fan take another prof.
She is a very friendly teacher, however, that is about her only redeeming quality. You have to teach yourself the material if you want to pass. Phrases she likes to use when she is corrected or doesn't know, "Dually noted..." and "I'll have to look that up and get back with you." Jsyk, she almost never does.
Terrible teacher. I don't know why I attend her class. Everyday I see people not interested in the lectures but instead interested with facebook and computer games. I myself have practiced the art of angry birds in her class due to the fact that she has no idea whats she is talking about or how to explain what she is talking about.
In this class, you are more likely to see someone leave the room in disgust (maybe from the 1st person perspective) than to actually get anything from the class. Aleeta (I refuse to call her Dr.) rambles, gets confused, and frustrates anyone and everyone within ear shot. I had to go to another class to do well in Aleeta's. DO NOT TAKE!
D is not for doctorate. That's all I have to say. To this point in the semester she hasn't been able to answer a question CLEARLY, or at all. You're better off getting help from friends who happen to be Chemistry majors or teaching the material to yourself.
Useless. If you take this professor, you will have to teach yourself the material.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Kind woman who I don't doubt knows the material. However she has not developed a method to deliver that knowledge to others what so ever. Rambling off of a power point (that often contains mistakes) isn't a good method of teaching. There needs to be some clarifying piece as well.
Powe is very approachable, and very nice, but sadly she is completely incapable of teaching chemistry. I have had a lot of professors that I questioned their ability to teach their subject material, but never had I questioned their own knowledge of their subject until Powe. I truly don't understand how she has PhD behind her name.
Powe is honestly a terrible professor. She cannot answer in class questions. She talks right from PowerPoints that are straight from the textbook. Avoid if possible.
Very kind and helpful if you have any questions or concerns, but it seemed like she was unsure of the material she was teaching. She often makes mistakes and relies too much on the slides of her powerpoint. She means well and I'm sure she knows chemistry, but she just can't teach.
Dr. Powe is the worst professor I have ever had. She gets confused during lecture and never answers questions during class. I went to her office because of a mistake in grading on my exam and she was very rude. Avoid if possible!
Avoid at all costs, read the ratings and take heed, for I did not. Powe is unable to answer many questions in a straight forward fashion. Error are abundant in the lecture, recitation, quizzes, works sheets, exams, and grading there of. Recitation rarely follows lecture. Be prepared to journey through chemistry alone.
Worst professor I have ever had. If not for the recitations with the TA I would not have learned anything.
Aleeta Powe can be summed to a few words: 1.Unapproachable 2.Rude 3.Incomprehensible 4.Repugnant. She should find another job because teaching is not for her. I would suggest the DMV.
Words cannot describe how I feel about this teacher. Students are constantly correcting her and when she works problems on the board, it's clear that she has no idea what she's doing, plus she can't do simple math. When a student asks a question, Powe diverts the answer just as a politician would. DO NOT TAKE!
Absolutely terrible professor. Students constantly corrected her, she would often have to "get back to you later" if you asked a question during lecture, b/c she has to go Google the question. Heavy emphasis on online homework. I can't believe she still has a job at U of L. I learned less than nothing and my IQ dropped 12 points after taking her.
Dr. Powe is the worst professor I have ever had by a wide margin. Going to lecture is pointless because it's all in the book and she often makes mistakes on even the simplest chemistry that will only confuse you. The class test average for the class on the first 2 exams was literally in the 50's. If you have a choice I recommend avoiding her class.
She couldn't have less of a clue as to what she is doing. I can't fathom how she even managed to acquire this position, let alone keep it for so long. There are mistakes on the examples she gives in class, on the notes, and on the tests themselves. She is constantly corrected by students, and she doesn't seem to know what she is even teaching.
hated the class bad teacher. needs to learn how to teach. just read and understand text book and do her practice exams and the exams online on noble's website. if it wasn't for noble's book and website i would have not done well in this class. she's very rude and shouldn't be since she sucks at teaching and her tests are harder than necessary
Very approachable if you take initiative first. Will help when she can. I registered late for classes as a transfer student and she helped me sign up for which sections of lab and lecture to take. She gets her material across in a good and understandable way if you just pay attention. Take notes of what you may not know and you will do fine
Literally has never responded to a single email I've sent, not approachable in office hours, and just sent out an email stating she's gone the entire week before our first exam, the lectures are on Tegrity and the TAs will be monitoring the exam.
Attending class doesn't seem to help my understanding of the subject. The online book required for this class helped me a lot and without it I would be lost. I'm very frustrated that we're taking our first test tomorrow and Dr.Powe hasn't had class in a week. She won't be there to administer the test to us either!
Not good
Seriously the worst professor I've ever had. She is impossible to follow during her lectures, as she constantly is making mistakes and having to correct herself. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!
Worst Professor I've ever had the displeasure of having. Her lectures are rambling and she constantly makes mistakes, her tests are hard and confusing due to formatting and content and cover things never covered in classes.
She never has the labs posted so I can't do my pre lab questions before going to lab. I constantly email her and she never responds. I don't have access to the course documents which contain the labs and then get penalized for it.
She didn't post labs until about 12 hours or so before the first lab , so don't think about working ahead. Reports are due the next day, so better make time for it even if you don't have time. Her grading rubric is way too harsh. If you don't go to the lecture you won't be able to do the prelabs Her explanations are terrible Struggled for an A
My IQ dropped from taking her class. In one of my experiments she referenced an imaginary book. Saying we needed to copy a table from page 43...? I think I would know more chemistry if I never had her class.
I don't like this teacher. Her test has nothing to do with what is covered and the material she covers is unnecessarily difficult but she doesn't explain it. For the final, you're not allowed to use a graphing calculator but you can't figure it out with a regular calculator because it has logs. Worst teacher I've had so far
Dr. Powe appears to have never taken an actual chemistry or physics class in her life. The relationship between wavelength, frequency, and the speed of light confused her. About 15% of the final actually pertained to the lab experiments, and the lectures wasted time considering she never actually completed them or got past the elementary ideas.
If you take this class, be prepared to be self-sufficient. I found that going to her lectures wasn't really helpful but everything she tested on was in Noble's online book. The final was nearly impossible, but was curved enough to make it fair. If you go to her office hours she's very sweet and helpful. You just need to put in extra effort to pass.
Just horrible. She doesn't understand anything that is going on. She will often do a single very easy example in class, and then leave you with way more difficult problems to work with on your own. She will also go on rants about things unrelated to the lab during class time when she could be teaching.
You can tell she basically understands the material, but she doesn't explain it in a way that's helpful or relevant to your lab or final exam. When it comes to your lab assignments, you're kind of on your own. Avoid her if possible!
It. Was. Horrible. Most of the time she struggled to explain material in a way that was understandable. I would ask a question in class and she would say "I'll have to get back to you on that." I absolutely hated the class and wish I had looked into her more before registering for that section.
Not a good professor. Very very unclear, and jumps around with material all the time. Lectures are very confusing and not helpful at all. Be prepared to read the book and study A LOT on your own. Basically had to teach myself though this whole course. Would not recommend this professor.
Please take the advice of the other students to avoid her at all costs. If you can't, I'm so sorry. Powe knows the material, but it barely shows. She gets scatterbrained during lectures and will fumble with her words which will only confuse you. The textbook is free, which is great. Get familiar with it because you'll probably be teaching yourself.
Powe has yet to learn how to teach a class. If you go to her lecture, you will leave no more prepared for your lab than when you came. She is nearly impossible to get ahold of unless you surprise her at her office. I set up a time with her twice to review material and both times she FORGOT. Avoid this teacher if at all possible!
Absolutely terrible. Avoid at all costs. If possible, take Baldwin for labs; NobleRichardsonliterally anyone else for lecture.
She's not very clear, often confusing herself, or saying contradictory phrases during her lectures.
Dr. Powe is very nice and seems to know material, but is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. During lecture she often contradicts herself or misspeaks. Her lectures are utterly boring in what can be an interesting topic. Haven't seen this mentioned but the order the material is covered in makes utterly no sense but blame Dr. Noble for that.
Terrible "professor". Half the class (me included) stopped going to class 4 weeks into the semester. She has no idea what she's talking about most of the time.
She numbered the final exam wrong, which made it confusing on how to report answers on the scantron and added an extra question which would throw off the grade.
If I had only one word to describe Aleeta Powe, I would choose "confusing." Whether you know the material or not, she will confuse you in the end. She gives a different answer to the same question each time. She brings up topics and suddenly drops them. You're better off skipping the class -- it will actually be for your benefit.
She is very unclear, scatterbrained, unhelpful, hard to get a hold of, contradictory. She is smart and knows her chemistry, but is not good at teaching it. Be prepared to teach yourself through the book, I doubt the lecture would benefit in any way.
Reading the book does more than the lectures. There are no worksheets that are helpful to learning. The tests are fairly unpredictable, and the lectures will go fast and skip very important material.
Horrible teacher. Do not take her class. Does not care about the students.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR CHEM 201, her tests are very unpredictable and lectures are too confusing. If you think you know how to do something on a test, the answer is always something unpredictable and it does not make sense. The final can either really bring up your grade or bring it down drastically.
It's almost impossible to reach this lady. She skips her office hours and her email on the syllabus is wrong. The labs are okay, but the final is insanely hard and specific.
Handouts and lectures were never posted. Completed practice problems she posted (that she had done so you could check your answers) had errors, and the wrong answers. Even the final included questions without the correct answers as a MC option! It's impossible to get a good grade due to her ineptitude. She's nice person, but a terrible teacher.
Never posts grades. Tests are harder than the practices, also very unexpected questions. Gets confused by her own words and often has to restart. You learn more from the recitation that the lecture if you get a good TA.
She didn't upload lecture slides until 9pm the day before the final, didn't respond to emails, and was extremely rude when I tried to ask questions. ALL of the useless stuff that doesn't apply to the lab is on the final. GO TO REACH DROP-IN SESSIONS. On 3/5 labs I got 148/150 because of REACH (the 2 bad grades were my fault).
Chem 208 is just like Chem 207. You don't really have a choice of professor, so pray you don't get Professor Powe. She doesn't teach things in lecture that are on pre-labs, yet you still need to know the things she teaches for the final exam. The final exam is way harder than it needs to be. Try to get amazing grades on labs (final sucks)
If you have an issue just go to office hours because getting a response email is unlikely. Her lectures are dry and she doesn't have a clue what she is talking about. She'll post practice problems for the final, but don't be fooled because at least a third of the final will be small details that are so irrelevant that you won't think to study them.
Powe is an incredibly smart and nice lady, but struggles with teaching. She is unclear and trips up on her words a lot, so lectures aren't very helpful. Definitely read the textbook completely. Tests are very hard, she will pick the trickiest questions, but often messes up on grading and will be quick to give points back if you go to her office.
Went to every single class period and every single lecture was completely irrelevant to the lab that week. Nice lady, just a really poor professor. Material was not explained well. Material was just random during lectures. Final was almost impossible because the lecture notes and lab notes had nothing to do with the final questions.
Dr. Powe is a very nice woman and approachable unlike many professors, but is a mediocre teacher at best. She seems to know her stuff, but is not very good at communicating it via lectures.
Final was awful. Don't know anyone that actually got an A. Quit going to lecture after she did the math for one thing completely wrong and every student knew. Got her practice exam for the final and did half of the work wrong herself. Had to learn everything ourselves and I constantly had to help people who hadn't done labs because she was no help.
Her lectures are very scattered and don't really make a lot of sense. She rarely responds to emails, and is not accessible outside of class. I went to the office hours she put on the syllabus, and she wasn't there. Do not take her if at all possible. Took over 2.5 weeks to put final grades in and was not accessible to talk about your final grade.
Worst professor I've had. Not accessible outside of class. She is not at all considerate with grades and won't give in to anything even if you make a good argument. Her final is extremely hard because it is over topics she barely mentions or doesn't cover in lecture. Her lectures are all over the place and don't relate to the lab for that week.
Her exam is hard and also her makeup rules are also weird. Never take her.
Pose honestly isn't that bad of a professor. Chemistry is just a hard subject and it's hard to make it easy and whenever someone doesn't understand it's easy to blame the professor. In reality to do well in any difficult class it takes a lot of your own work to do well and understand the material.
Not a very good professor. Cares more about her research than helping students out. Granted, she does incredible research and is a great person. However, I do not think she was a good professor for CHEM 201. Take Hoyt, but don't take Powe. Got things wrong on exams and wouldn't give credit back. Inaccessible, doesn't reply to emails.
Look, everyone gives Powe a very hard time, but honestly, she is one of the nicest teachers at UofL. Sure, her lecture can be scattered but she honestly cares about the class and you as a person. Try to get to know her like I did. I've had her 3 separate times and no issues. I was even able to call her office to get help on a lab report. Take her.
Dr. Powe takes attendance at lectures, but they aren't very helpful at all. She mostly reiterates concepts discussed in CHEM 201, but doesn't elaborate on info needed for this class that 201 doesn't touch on. Study guide wasn't like final at all. Take honors 208 if possible, most people in there have better grades than normal 208 sections.
Just got my final exam grade back100%. Tip: review her powerpoints and study everything you think ISN'T relevant to the lab material. I recommend recording her lectures, studying her online powerpoints, and taking notes. Go to REACH for labs. She is a very nice woman, but scatterbrained. Be ready to rely on yourself, lab mates, Google, & your TA.
Horrible experience with Powe. Many errors in her math were found on pre-lab assignments, lab reports, and the final, and when brought to her attention was basically told we should know how to work around her mistakes. Ridiculous. Completely inaccessible outside of class, and not once responded to a single email and didn't get grades until too late
She was ok. She was hard to follow and understand in class. She grades a lot on participation. Attendance is very important to her. She's a very nice woman but not a good professor.
Over the course of the class I sent her 5+ Emails. I got maybe 3 replies. Her lectures made next to no sense and it was common to find errors in her math. I think she knew what she was doing at one point, but has since forgotten and does not care to learn.
Chemistry is a hard subject and it is expected to be difficult in college / university. As such this is a hard class. You NEED to read the book. It's free online and cheap for a paper copy. Plenty of people who failed / hated this class / Powe didn't read the book and like to blame her. She isn't the best, but she tries. You need to put in effort.
Powe is caring and laid back. Her tests are very hard (mock exams don't truly prepare you as they are not going to look anything like the real exams). Read the textbook, use YouTube, and study core concepts. Her exams will have them inside out and backward. Ask tons of questions. Visit her office hours. Not a #1 pick, but not a horrible proffesor.
The three exams we had were very easy, but the final was ridiculous, and not like what was learned in class, except the cumulative section. Doesn't reply to emails, she only replied to like 1 of the 7 I sent her. Better than a lot of professors, but definitely not the most caring.
Pre labs have to be exactly right or you won't get the credit, meaning if you put "Seven" when the answer is "7" you'll be wrong and she won't check them. Didn't communicate well with the TAs, so I missed 4 points on a lab because of something the professor did wrong. Final was easy, but it took almost 2 months for the grades to be posted.
Skipping lecture isnt a bad thing but she will mention stuff and give hand outs for those who need it.
Overall, Powe wasn't a terrible prof. She is bad with time management, and it takes her forever to grade papers. Although, I attended every lecture, I think they are pointless to attend because everything is online. I had Troy as my recitation leader and he was great. I highly recommend him and going to every recitation.
Contradicts herself multiple times a lecture. Get ready to rely on your textbook for information because her lectures and painfully unhelpful.. tried so hard in this class but when I went in for help she was never available.
She posts all of the lectures online so attendance isn't necessary unless you want more specific info. All hw is done online, but she doesnt tell you when she adds assignments so check it daily. A little bit unorganized. She gives pop quizzes but they count for extra credit on tests so they can't hurt your grade.
Probably the least helpful professor that I've had. Lectures are really boring and pointless, I basically had to teach everything to myself the whole semester. She doesn't update grades on blackboard until finals week. Tests are extremely hard, and the homework is easy to forget about. Find another professor for this!
She was not the best at explaining herself. Easier to get an A with her though because of homework grades and not just exam grades. If you take her just read and understand the book and you'll be fine otherwise you'll fall behind. Listening to her lectures often confused me more but when I read the book it all made sense.
This class is difficult, but you can get a good grade if you study. Dr. Powe will gladly talk you through a concept. If you skip lectures you can fall behind easily. There is online homework that boosts your grade a lot. She also gives partial credit on tests which is nice. She can be a bit confusing so just ask for clarification.
Dr. Powe is a very caring professor. She is a bit scatter-brained but she means well. If you study the PowerPoints, do the practice problems in the book, attend recitations, and do practice tests, you will be okay!
Lectures are incredibly useless - you can learn more reading your textbook for 5 minutes than you do listening to a 1 hour and 15 minute lecture. Also, content doesn't matter on her tests - unless you show your full half page calculation for a problem in the 2 centimeter space she provides, you lose all credit. Avoid at all costs - I am disgusted.
Ive actually never heard of a professor making gen chem so hard. She is absolutely the WORST lecturer I have ever had. Literally do not go to class. Go to recitation and do the homework for points. Then read nobles book and do his practice problems and you can get an A. Going to class makes everything CONFUSING
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! if you have another option then please go with that! Powe is TERRIBLE at lecturing and does not prepare you for the exams! the recitation leaders are also pretty terrible and have taught or helped with absolutely nothing!!!!!! if you take this class, UTILIZE THE SI SESSIONS!!!
This was likely one of the worst classes I've ever taken. The lectures are pointless and I got more from the recitation (although still very little). For some reason she likes to do group work in the lecture that does not help you at all. The best thing to do is to read Dr. Noble's $20 book and do the work he has listed.
AT ALL COSTS PLEASE TRY AND AVOID THIS CLASS. powe is a terrible professor, her lectures dont even go over whats on the exam, its better to just stick to recitation and si sessions. if you can avoid taking this class then DO IT
do NOT take this class. Ever. Bad at lecturing and tests are difficult. Not good for an entry level class. It's a weed out class as well.
I took Dr. Hoyt and Dr. Powe for Chem 201. I liked Powe much better. Her lectures are more understandable, she tries to learn everyone's name, and she is caring. Chem 201 is a hard class, but Dr. Powe is a much better professor for it. I went to her office hours, and she loves talking to students. Curves the final. Show up to class to know material
Class is very difficult for no reason. She's good at chemistry but not at teaching. If you don't do well on one of your exams it is difficult to pull your grade back up. Sapling does nothing to help your grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you can chose somebody else. There are often a lot of mistakes on her tests to review your answers after.
Powe is not a teacher I would take again. I went to class about once every two weeks and somehow forgot content when I DID attend class. She is confusing and is obviously conflicted on her own teaching methods. Lectures are hard to follow as she attempts to write on a surface tablet that seems to be 150 years past its expiration date. Do not Powe.
The textbook in this class is a LIFESAVER. If you don't read you definitely won't pass because the lectures make no sense and will make you more confused. Finally, the correct answers are RARELY options on the test so always just box the answer you find even (if it isn't a choice) because thats the only way to get it right.
The tests are based purely off of the textbook and lectures are online so there is really no need to attend class. Her lectures were very confusing. Attend the recitation because you get credit, and there are occasional extra credit opportunities in class if you attend the lectures.
Dr. Powe is not a strong teacher but she is definitely one of the easiest Chem 201 classes available. If you took AP Chem in high school and feel confident about your abilities, take Dr. Powe. Her exams are straightforward and you know what to expect.
Classic example of someone who is good at what they teach but can't actually teach very. One of the worst courses I have ever taken as it was just confusing and asking questions in class made me even more confused. Not a good start to college. Freshman beware!
Professor Powe began using a reverse class style of teaching, which basically means its pointless to ever actually go to class and when you do go to class its not helpful at all.
This woman does a lecture through an online recording. She does not teach in the actual lecture. Instead she gives a worksheet and cant answer 200 peoples questions in 50 min. Im a very smart kid and on a pre dental track. Ive NEVER struggled so hard in a science class than I have this one. Tutoring multiple times a week is needed to make a C
Her lectures are pretty much useless to go to unless you need extra help on the chapters covered. Most of the recordings are online (which I prefer so I can write at my own pace), but it's basically set up like an online course. Go to recitation because they are very helpful and cover content in depth.
She is pretty strict, very defined principles. You work inside class and listen to her lectures online. Not my kind of teaching style.
I initially had high hopes going into Dr. Powe's Chem class. However, she does a reversed classroom, where you have to learn the pre-recorded lectures on your own, and then you go into class and do her "skill builder exercises". I hated this set up, so I usually skipped and then learned everything on my own. Avoid her if possible
She uses reversed classroom. There's no point in going to lecture. Even in her online video lectures, she makes no sense. Everything she says is really, really, really confusing. My tip is to read Dr. Noble's textbook, go to chemistry recitation, and get yourself a REACH chemistry tutor.
Lectures are pointless, her videos do not help, I rely mainly on Khan Academy and Dr. Noble's book. She is not accessible through email unless you email her 3-4 times about the same thing, if you ask a question in class, she will make you feel dumb. Beware of Sapling, waste of time, but required for grade. Incredibly smart woman, but cannot teach.
Dr. Powe is a nice person who can be pretty scatter brained. She will do weird things like give out psuedo pop quizzes (she tells you when they will be ahead of time) and bring in toy atoms to use as a prop, which she ends up just fumbling around with and dropping most of the time. Her teaching style is odd, but I wouldn't say she's a bad professor
You pay to teach yourself, you do majority of your work on sapling.
Horrible. Her teaching style is a mess. You pay 42$ to teach your self on sapling. Never responds to emails unless you send the same thing 4-5 times.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Dr. Powe doesn't teach at all. Overall, class is pretty easy if you put some effort.
Professor Powe has made me really dislike Chemistry, despite loving it coming into her class. She doesn't teach, using a "Flipped Classroom" method which means you teach yourself on recordings of what would have been lectures. Sapling is mandatory and around $45, it'll be your best hope at passing. I'd try to get a different professor
I had Professor Powe for CHEM201 and I have to say that it wasnt fun. She is devoted to the flipped classroom, which really doesnt work for everyone. We practically didnt learn from the in-class portion. The mean of the grades on the final exam was under 75% Im pretty sure. Shes a very kind person just not a fantastic Professor.
I guess you could call it group projects - she does this thing called flipped classroom. Essentially, its a way to get out of teaching, in my opinion. You teach yourself with little to no help from the professor, class was almost useless to me since group activities make it harder for me to focus and learn. Hard to pass.
She was the only professor teaching chem 201 and everyone in class hated her teaching styles, she is so scatterbrained it makes learning the content extremely hard. Horrible class set up, exam questions are nothing like the examples in homework, I would NOT recommend her anyone!! AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
Dr. Powe is the most unorganized person and professor I have ever interracted with. She is very difficult to reach out side of class and only makes excuses. She will fail you on tests if you have the right answer but no work. She does not post all of the necessary material to be successful in the class. She makes the material harder than it is.
I honestly did not learn much from her lectures. She never responds to her emails, which became a big problem this semester as class was transitioned online. I read the textbook and taught myself chemistry. She was out sick for two weeks and didn't inform the students half the time. It was a waste of time and money.
She's a good professor, always available to help, but her class was difficult. To say so bluntly, if you aren't willing to put forth a little more effort, then you will struggle.
Coming from someone who got a perfect on every Noble (best chemistry professor who left yet we still use his textbook) exam and the final and who is now getting a B in this class, DO NOT TAKE HER. You will learn nothing and your GPA will take that hit as a consequence. Worst professor to ever exist and her TAs can vouch for that.
I had Dr. Powe for Chem 201 and Chem 202. She is a very nice lady, but not a great professor. Her lectures are very hectic and hard to follow. I recommend reading the text book and taking notes to learn. The tests are difficult and have 20-30 of HARD t/f questions. I don't enjoy chem and it's difficult for me to grasp and she didn't help that any.
Avoid at all costs if your major involves chem, this is not a good foundation to build on. Chem is hard no matter what and you need to put work in, but she makes it frustrating more than difficult. Makes a lot of mistakes in lectures, on exam questions, and notoriously the keys to her exams. Flipped classroom done very wrong. READ THE BOOK do EOCs.
Please take someone else. She does a flipped classroom, which is impossible to execute with a large class and an old musty room. Very poor lecturer, gets words all jumbled and mixed up. Absolutely does not believe in proofreading her exams, or anything, so lots of mistakes to weed through. Can be rude to students with questions. Just don't.
Completely unhelpful, not only ignored student's questions, but flat out got concepts wrong and didn't admit she was ever wrong. Your best bet is learning from the textbook, audio lectures she uploads, and the TAs. Clint is the best TA you can get
This professor never knows what she's talking about. Coming to class made me more confused. The TA's help but there is only so much they can do. I would AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you are not a super genius at chemistry already. If I didn't know how to do this stuff already I would be screwed. Also check the test key because its always wrong.
Do not take this teacher at any cost. Her tests are not over what she talks about in her lectures. You teach yourself on sapling which is very difficult. I have not learned anything in this class.
Dr. Powe is a professor I would avoid at all costs. She does not care about her students or the amount they learn. Her homework assignments are little more than a recommendation, and the only reason I would do them is to learn the material. Her lectures are worthless, her questions are often incorrectly written, and she will count you wrong for it.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Unless you can teach this material to yourself, you won't learn it. She absolutely WAS NOT READY to teach during pandemic online and the proof lies in the fact that she makes her test literally the day before they are assigned with MANY ERRORS. I retook chem 201 to learn more than I did last semester and im somehow more confused.
Powe's class is relatively easy, but her approach to teaching is TERRIBLE. Our tests are over the content we discuss in class 2 weeks prior. So we're doing assignments and learning about one topic and taking a test in the same day over completely different subject matter. P.S. Her lectures suck so I wouldn't bother with those.
She seems sweet, but she usually makes A LOT of mistakes while teaching and on exams. The exams are usually about 12-15 questions but making a small mistake can cost you big time. The grade in her class is based heavily on exams. Since this course I took is online, you basically have to teach yourself the content.
Comically hands-off when it comes to teaching, you're basically expected to learn everything yourself. She makes frequent mistakes related to exams, avoid her at all costs
The worst professor I have ever had. Classes are spent by her messing up problems than correcting the later, confusing students more than when they arrived. Her tests have unrealistic time limits, typos, and overall incorrect content. She responds to any and all student contact with sass. Worst class I have ever taken! I'm FURIOUS!
Aleeta Powe is easily the worst professor that I have ever have. The lectures are completely useless to me, they are way more confusing than it is worth. I have had to learn completely from one textbook that is it. Her tests are almost impossible to finish and are usually wrong. It is clear she only cares about her research and not here students.
Doctor Powe is by far THE WORST chemistry teacher there is. I am currently in Speed School and am having to teach myself all of the material for the class. Prime example: if the exam is over chapters 20-24, she will be going over random questions for chapter 29 in her lecture. The tests are HORRIBLY formatted and with no going back after you answer
Can't even make tests correctly.
Just no. If youve ever had a difficult teacher, youll be okay. If you have always coasted in classes, youll struggle. She is not a good explainer and her tests are hard
Honestly one of the worst experiences. Possibly just exemplified due to the pandemic, but the professor was hard to reach. The tests often felt random and the material isn't taught you're just expected to read from book and apply it yourself. Would not recommend at all.
Had Powe for 201&202. Hated both her 'reverse classroom' and lecture style classes. Lectures are hard to understand & don't help prepare for exams. Read the textbook & watch Khan Academy to pass. Students don't respect her due to her teaching style which makes learning in her class that much harder. Taking her class twice was my worst mistake ever.
Possibly the worst learning experience I've ever had - ever. I'm sure that her performance was exacerbated by the pandemic but even despite this her organization was beyond poor - I've spent all semester confused and upset, nobody knows what's going on, and every tiny snippet of information feels like a surprise with her.
Terrible at teaching. Worst professor you could have for this class. Easily the worst teacher, least understanding professor and all around super confusing person. Would never take her class again
Dr. Powe was definitely the worst and hardest professor I have ever had. Exams were 55% of our grade with little to no extra credit opportunities. Don't rely on her to respond to any emails with questions you may. A majority of the time the exams were filled with mistakes. Best advice: Read Dr. Noble's textbook and do the practice problems!
Did not really teach at all. Lectures were not even lectures. You have to teach yourself. The only reason I passed the class was due to a heavy curve put in.
Never has a teacher made me long for the days prior to my birth as much as Aleeta Powe. Her inept presentations are marred with frequent errors. She speaks as knowledgeably on the subject of chemistry as most TAs do. Her tests are filled with trick questions, poor wording, and questions where the correct answer is not an option.
Throw your expectations about quality-made exams, quick (less than a week) e-mail feedback, and helpfulness (not being scolded for asking questions) out the window. Why? Because Aleeta Powe simply does not care. CHEM 201 is nothing but a dreadful poison on an otherwise good week, for both you AND her. She doesn't care about you. Why should you her?
Honestly, I have been in this class two weeks and hate her teaching. We come to college to get higher education, yet she does not even want to teach the education. I could understand her method if this were a concept based class. This is chemistry, you cannot simply TEACH YOURSELF all the materials. She makes it known that this is self taught.
Tons of trick questions on the exams. COVID increased the usual 3 exams to 7 which saved my grade, but it was still hard because she doesn't teach nor care about teaching. Accused a bunch of students for cheating when they didn't.
She is the only professor to teach this class I believe, so heads up. Tons of tests no quizzes. She doesn't teach so go ahead and skip her teams meetings. You have to teach yourself completely. No extra credit. Extremely rude in emails. Doesn't believe she is ever wrong. Tests have nothing to do with the material on Sapling. Also remember SIGFIGS!
Terrible. There were 7 CUMULATIVE exams, and a final. Plus sapling assignments due every other day. Her grading scale has a built in curve ... and shes proud that students dont pass her class. She is very disrespectful and unwilling to help with issues in the class. PLEASE if theres another Professor you can take for this course, take them
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Trick questions on the exams, overly punitive (takes points if element names are capitalized?????), disrespectful, and lectures leave you more confused. She makes it known she does not care about students and if they pass or not. She uses a more competent professor's text books and worksheets. She's in the wrong profession 1000%
Horrible professor!!! She is the only professor that teaches this course so you don't really have any other options. Test questions can come from any chapters so you just need to know everything before you take the course. Her lectures are more helpful if you don't attend because she goes off topic and makes everything way more confusing. -10/10
Powe is the worst professor i have ever had. She is not helpful, so do not bother to email her with questions you might have. She is rude and degrading in all of her email replies. She has seven exams and a final. Exams are very strict, and you will get docked for little details. She does not care if you fail. PLEASE find another professor!!
Shes literally the worst professor I ever had. She accuses you of cheating over the silliest things. Her teaching style SUCKS. I had to teach myself EVERYTHING. So if you wanna pass chem or learn something DONT TAKE HER.
Dr. Powe is one of the worst professors i've had. She is dismissive of questions, rushes through lectures and skips content that will be on exams. The exams are riddled with mistakes. Please take a different professor.
Been in this class for a little under a month and I can tell you she hasn't and will never teach you anything. You are your own professor. You teach everything to yourself and it is the most mentally demanding and exhausting thing I've ever done. Her lectures are rushed, and she dismisses every question ever asked. Awful.
If you take her, be prepared to make it your main priority. She's not a bad teacher per-say, but she really expects you to do most of the heavy lifting. She's very knowledgeable in chemistry and will def help you if you need it, but she also expects A LOT out of you. Like, A LOT. Even if you're not a chem major, be prepared to be one for a semester
Aleeta Powe has to be one of the worst professors at University of Louisville, her main goal when she starts every class is to ruin your day and she does that exceptionally. Don't even bother asking for help, all you will get is an email that explains nothing. If you aren't good at teaching yourself you should avoid her class like the plague.
I dropped this class because I didnt understand the material and Dr. Powe doesnt help you understand at all. She goes over the lecture and maybe a worksheet in class, but thats the most help youll ever get from her.
Trust me dont take her. She makes Chemistry hard and then it is! No time to do the exams 30m 25 solving problems. She has 7 exams and final and hw!
Don't bother going to lectures, she is always 3 chapters ahead of the exams. Read Noble's chapters and do the end of chapter problems. Do extra credit and the achieve homework. Exams will have content from old chapters. She doesn't teach content, very scatterbrained. Class is decently easy if you practice and teach yourself.
Dr. Powe is the worst general chemistry professor by far. Her lectures are useless, don't bother going. You are best off reading chapters and DO THE PAL WORKSHEETS! PAL and Organic Chemistry Tutor on Youtube will carry you through this class. If you have an option to CLEP out of the class, TAKE IT! don't waste the money to teach yourself.
Dr. Powe get's a bad wrap, but she is really fine when compared to the monsters that lie in the chemistry department. Very human, responsive, always looking to help. Computers disconnect from wifi and she'd let you take it at home. Gave solid advice. She just grades toughly and her lectures suck. Read the textbook and you'll be fine.
Her lectures aren't very helpful but she really wants people to succeed and provides a lot of study materials in addition to the textbook. There are exams every two weeks and the content is pretty difficult, but you'll be fine if you read the textbook. When my laptop didn't turn on during one of the exams, she let me retake it later in the day.
Dr. Powe isn't very good. Her lectures covered very little relevant content. If she was ever corrected in class after explaining something wrong, she couldn't seem to handle being wrong and would backtrack but always try to play it off. Lots of people got accused of cheating on exams with virtually no proof, but nothing usually came of it.
In her class, except to teach yourself. She is terrible when it comes to being empathetic, she doesnt care about her students, she is all around a terrible professor. You get a single worksheet after a 5 minute lecture explanation. Her class was a waste of time and money.
I asked her a simple question and I made a mistake when she was helping me, as I made the mistake she laughed in my face and was clapping her hands as she was laughing and then apologized while still laughing. That affected me mentally because I started crying and she didn't notice how rude she was towards me, * she always says to ask questions*!
Don't go to lectures. She will make you more confused than when you walk in. Read the textbook and do the homework. And go tot the recitation. You can get more help there than in class. She is a horrible professor and doesn't really lecture. The best thing you can do for yourself is to take a different professor.
Not quite sure how Powe is even still a professor at the university, do not take her if you do not have to, her class is basically you teach yourself. Going to her lectures are a waste of your time you better off on your own or in recitations.
She would arrive to class the minute it begins and would not have a clue what she was going to lecture about. She claimed that she had a flipped classroom but she would still lecture hectically off a slideshow or she would do a practice problem which was just her doing it and not actually teaching it. Don't take if you have the option.
This is a hard course and a lot of people blame the professor, but professor Powe is really caring and there to help you succeed. All you have to do is seek help and you'll honestly do great.
Her lectures were not beneficial to gauge in. I read the textbook and that's all you need really. it seems like her exams always had some thing tricky in them and they were taken online so they were case sensitive. I enjoy taking Kuta way more in 202.
She is not a good professor. She will treat you like a person well below her. She rarely responds to emails and will laugh at you if you make a mistake. She does not like to clear things up and doesn't grade until the end of the semester. If you have another choice, do yourself a favor and take them.
She was just a horrible teacher. Wouldn't lecture during class time and her main answer to questions you may ask is "you should know this". I would definitely not recommend her to ANYONE.
You are your own professor in this class. The lectures confused me more than just reading on my own, so I stopped going to them after the 3rd week. PAL sessions are your best friend here. This class is doable, but only if you are resourceful. Tests are incomprehensible at best, answer keys are usually wrong. Powe gets basic chemical concepts wrong.
I need more than 350 characters to describe the incredibly strong feelings I have for this "professor." She has a "self-guided" class, which means you need to hunt down everything you need to learn on your own. She tests over random stuff, and she is incredibly rude. I took her as a freshman, (jr. now,) and it is still the worst class I ever took.
By far the worst professor I've had. Doesn't give clear responses to emails and stresses to ask questions, yet one question from me ended with a mock and no answer given. The material is not hard, a lot is just expected. The textbook and worksheets carried my grade.
You start new chapters before you've tested over previous material. We had an exam over chapters 7-13 on a Friday, but we were learning chapters 15/16 during the week. So you study throughout the week for an exam and then play panicked catch-up on Saturday so you can complete the homework due at midnight. She couldn't care less about her students.
She is a nice person but the class is really hard. Be prepared to teach yourself most material. Recommend studying with friends to avoid losing your mind. Honestly whether you do well in the class depends if you have a good SLA or not. My SLA was a goat so the class isnt that bad. Material is def tough so be prepared to study a lot.
She preaches active learning, which needs equal effort from student and professor, but wants you to do 60% of the learning. She speaks as if you should already know the information and grades every detail on exams - I'm not even a chem major. She skips chapters in lecture and starts new ones rather than reviewing for exams.
She has a test every two weeks which would be manageable if she actually lectured you on what you need to know but I had to spend my time instead teaching myself everything she covered in class. Organic chemistry tutor on youtube is your best friend. She's pretty much your only option for chem201 though.
Be prepared to teach yourself the material. She starts chapters before testing over previous materials. She is the only option for in-person classes. I should have just gone with the online course. I would have probably learned the same amount but then at least it would have possibly been on a schedule that worked better for me.
Nice person, not a great teacher at all. She made this class difficult. If you don't get a good student leader during class you're really screwed. There is minimal partial credit on the tests because they are online. The only grades in this class are the 4 tests and 80 homework points. GO TO RECITATION!! 20 extra points, even if your TA sucks.
I took Dr. Powe for chem 201 this fall 2022 semester. Honestly you are better off reading the book and watching organic chem tutor on youtube. Her lectures are only useful because of the handouts she gives, those are good practice for what will be on exams. True or false on exams come straight from nobles text.
Dr. Powe is THE worst professor. She doesn't care about you at all. She never once lectured and if you ask her a question, she'll just laugh in your face. Tests are impossible and if you have technical difficulties, good luck. Overall, she is just a very inconsiderate, rude and unhelpful professor. Hire a private tutor asap if you have to take her.
Watch the video lectures and complete the end of chapter questions, lectures are sometimes unclear and class time is almost entirely used to complete worksheets with SLAs. Get the easy points through recitation attendance, ALEKS homework and syllabus quiz
First thing is that she expects 30+ hours a week for a 3 credit class, word for word bar for bar what she said. Basically excreting chemistry is what she wants. You learn everything online and she teaches absolutely nothing, you do papers everyday but get no credit for it. When you ask a question she legitimately laughs in your face or walks away.
Be ready to teach yourself everything. Grades are only exams, but she does not offer study guides. She expects you to make this class your top priority. Take literally anyone else if you have to take chem 201. You have been warned.
The worse teacher I have ever had in my entire. I did everything, but I still got either D or F in her class. The worst thing is she is the only teacher teaching this class and I have to retake. I hate my life
She doesn't teach. You come to class and she gives you worksheets like you're in middle school. I cannot even describe how annoying it was to attend this class at 8 am to find out she doesn't even teach. There's no way to know what your grade is throughout the semester and she rarely responds to emails. Curves heavily though.
Dr. Powe gives no partial credit on exams. The class is manageable, but not easy. Get ready to teach yourself, because she does not lecture at all. In fact, the lectures are a huge waste of time. The only reason the lectures are moderately helpful is getting the worksheets, but most of them are found on blackboard anyways.
She is one of the worst professors I have ever had. She does not lecture at all and just gives you a worksheet to work on for the whole class. She gives no partial credit and is a very tough grader. She also is very hard to reach in emails, she once responded a month and a half late to one of my emails and said "Please refer to the syllabus."
The lowest grade I have ever gotten in my entire life came from this teacher. The entire grade is based on your exams and she says she never gives extra credit but then randomly gives points to people who attend her lectures even though they are not mandatory? I wish I had taken this class with a different professor. Sorry if you gotta take her.
Never lectured or even taught for that matter. Horrible at responding to emails. ALEKS questions will be your best friend and are fairly similar to the exams.
The absolute worst professor/teacher i have ever had. If you have to take her then you need to drop it as soon as you can.
Shes not great as a professor, class is organized in a way that makes it extremely difficult to learn, and lectures usually don't help much. HOWEVER, she does care. When your struggling which you will in this class, go to her office hours and get help from her. She is more than happy to help you to understand and study harder concepts.
The material in this class is relatively straightforward, but how the class is structured is horrible. She claimed it was a "hybrid" learning class, but it's practically an online class with mandatory attendance. Powe has a monopoly on all CHEM 201 classes, so good luck.
Bad class structure. She hands out worksheets where TAs do all of the assistance with students. Really bad instruction. She knows what exams we won't finish, but still hands them out????? TAKE KUTA INSTEAD!!!!
Dr. Powe posts video lectures for every chapter and they're 1000% worth watching and taking notes on, the day before each class so you already know what you do/don't understand and can ask questions in class. Test heavy, just do the textbook practice problems and you'll be ok. Powe is not a monster, definitely would take her class again.
She is not as bad as some of the reviews but the course is very test-heavy. She will expect you to read the textbook or watch the video before coming to the class and in the class you will be given a worksheet and he will do some problems to show you an example. She will tell you the topic that will be on the test. There is some extra credit.
She is not as bad as some of the reviews say, but she is not great. The 5 exams are not easy. She does not lecture in class very often. Learning gets done outside of class. I've never gotten below an A in a class in college besides this one and I saw a tutor through the entire class. Go to SLA sessions and watch youtube videos.
Calls her style hybrid but only hands out a worksheet and half-asleep reading from outdated presentations. I would recommend signing up for REACH tutoring the first week of this class, cause you have little option for ANYONE else for this core class! Great curve so a low D is actually a C. If attendance wasn't required I wouldve taught myself.
She makes fun of or laughs at students if they ask a question, doesn't upload grades, makes the exam on material that she said will not be on there, made a powerpoint about why she is an amazing teacher and how our feelings are irrelevant after the mid-semester survey, and leaves passive aggressive comments on exams.
Day one Dr. Powe told us that she wouldn't lecture and we were required to learn the material before class. Basically all you do in class is busy work that the SLAs help you with. The exams are fair. It's hard to dedicate so much time to teaching yourself this course when you are taking other science courses that require a similar amount of work.
Doesn't teach well & this was shown by how she made us do a lot of worksheets in class that only the SLAs helped with. End of semester, she said she'd give us keys to the final exam after exams were done so that we may check over and see how we did but she never uploaded it, nor did she put in grades for several assignments INCLUDING THE FINAL.
Horrible teaching skills. You're basically teaching yourself throughout the course and doing a lot of busy work. Didn't put in any grades besides like 4 exam grades and that's it. Don't know how I did on the final or the other exams and don't have grades for other assignments either. Save yourself the time and don't take her class.
Not fair. Get everything in writing/email. She is NOT ALLOWED to not tell you your grade. Speak to Chemistry Complaint Department, get a breakdown of your grades. File a grievance if you were graded unclearly! I just won my case and she has to recalculate grades from all 201 students from Fall 22. Bring it to someone's attention, don't settle!!!
this is the worst professor in all of Kentucky. I promise If you have her just change your schedule and thank yourself later. Not only is the class hard but she's rude.If your not doing well she judges everything about you and how your"brain" isn't adapting to chemistry well enough for this course. took again w/ someone else and got an A.
take another prof that's all I have to say.
Is extremely rude when asking for help. She will look down on you as if it's your fault for not understanding concepts well when the person teaching it is horrible at their job.
She is the worst professor I have had. She is a terrible lecturer which she barely does anyway because she doesn't believe in lecturing. Get ready to be unprepared for every test because she doesn't provide any kind of study guide and barely teaches the material.
I promise her class is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Her way of teaching is slightly different than most, but as long as you put in a little effort to watch her lectures, you will be fine! She is very willing to help if you ever get behind on content. Just make sure to stay on top of the material!
Professor Powe is HONESTLY not as bad as a lot of people be saying. They make it seem like she is the worst you can ever take but honestly that's definitely not true. As long as you watch her videos before class, practice problems in the textbook, you'll pass.I would also encourage you to attend her office hour. she is honestly a Caring Professor.
She does not teach. Every class so far she has put a single slide and has us take notes from a website we CANNOT access for a grade we do not know we will receive. Super unclear teaching practices. Assignments are also not posted on BlackBoard so if you miss one then you are screwed. Save your money and take a different chemistry teacher.
Makes you pay $100 for a teaching system that is also graded with ai. She gives you papers each week to fill out yourself as a guide working toward quizzes. Terrible
Just Don't. If this course is your only option, have some self-respect and drop your major. It's not worth it.
You have to teach this to yourself. Lectures are confusing and you are expected to know it all already. She looks down upon students who ask questions. Happened to me once, never asked again. She won't tell you your grades for anything outside of exams. She also puts content on exams she said she wouldn't. Textbook is a sorry excuse, good luck.
I took this class last year, it was miserable. She makes you buy ALEKS, a ridiculously expensive AI subscription site. I told her that I couldn't afford it, but her only solution was to hope my test scores alleviated that point loss. Nobody knew their grade until the class ended. She is very unprofessional, uncaring, and mocks students. AVOID.
The professor has a unique teaching style that requires extra effort, but unstuckstudy ai and the textbook can help supplement the lectures. Fair grading if you stay on top of the work.
She would post a few questions on a board and then just vanish. If you saw her and asked a question she was very rude and disrespectful as if the students didn't deserve to be there for taking time to ask a question in class. The tests were horrible and the ALEKS ai for the homework was the absolute worst. Overall, very condescending and horrible.
This class is absolutely terrible, This is the worst professor Ive had. Her class is unorganized, she doesn't follow her syllabus, she expects you to know everything with out teaching it. She gave us the wrong text book to read, and let us know 5 weeks into the semester. When I asked a question she laughed. She is very rude and disrespectful
I would NOT recommend her class, it's a class you need to know the content for next chem classes and bio classes if you are taking any. She doesn't teach/lecture whatsoever, her class work is not aligned with homework, questions will definitely be laughed at she doesn't know the answer herself. Her exams are so random just like class time.
She doesn't lecture and if she does, it's very inconsistent and she jumps from one concept to another and back. She doesn't have graded assignments, but gives you a worksheet in class and you work with the people around you. She does have graded homework on ALEKS but it doesn't align with her lectures, you are basically doing it for a grade :/
I don't think I would take this prof again; she started the semester off with saying she wasn't a lecture type of teacher, but she is. Her exams take up most of your grade and Aleks is not helpful.why am I learning everything by myself in a Chem 101 class!!!?
I believe she's the only professor that teaches CHEM101 but if there's an option to choose any other professor, YOU SHOULD. Anyways, you have to pay to do homework just for AI to grade it. Although, it's a free grade, you don't really learn anything from it. And you can't really understand much from her lectures either. And you have to self-study.
Awful, does not do lectures or teach. Be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING, Powe is also no help. If you go to her about struggling in the course, she will not care and will blame YOU for not knowing. If you have to take this course, take it online and with a different professor.
Dr. Powe is likely the worst professor in the country. She tries to teach people things she doesn't even know herself. She spends more time in class talking about places she's vacationed rather than helping the students who are struggling in her class. Flexes her degrees on the first day. 80 dollars for ai graded homework that teaches you nothing.
Honestly, Dr. Powe isn't THAT bad. She used to lecture the entire time and then give a worksheet that wouldn't even be taken for a grade. I saw it as pointless to even show up, but after mid term feedback she improved almost immediately. Make sure you show up to class because towards the last 5 minutes she gives extra credit! Extra credit saved me!
Doesn't know how to use blackboard, doesn't know HOW to lecture (doesn't believe in lecturing [flipped class]), placed the wrong textbook in the syllabus and did not correct it for two months, you will NOT know your overall grade, ALEKs (online homework) topics weeks ahead of topics covered in class (stated she would fix - has not). Beware.
She does not lecture. Going to class will teach you nothing. Please do not take her
Terrible proffesor, in her study guides she lists the wrong chapters to read for the test, so she doesnt even know the textbook that she is having us read. She doesnt teach anything within her lectures, most of the lecture consists of where she has been in the world, and the online homework isnt even on things we have learned.
This professor is a nice woman but she struggles with some things. Her syllabus is not clear at ALL. Half the stuff that she teaches us is not on the test and when you ask her a question she looks at you like you are an idiot. On blackboard, I had to calculate my grade the whole time. I was confused and frustrated.
Dr.Powe is a kind and supportive professor who genuinely wants her students to excel. Her course requires proactivity, with ALEKS, extra credit, and office hours being key to success. Come to class! Despite a rocky start, I grew to appreciate her teaching, and did well on exams. She has a fair grading system and helpful resources, very underrated!
you would need to learn on your own because what she teaches are not on the exams
Terrible Professor. Cannot teach to save HER OWN LIFE. 100% do not recommend. She doesnt know whats being uploaded to a $100 assignment course, therefore youre going to every assignment (and class) completely blind. Expects you to know the material before you even get to class and hands out the wrong material. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Very very frustrating professor, makes you by aleks which is an online ai homework system that is north of $100 and If you don't get it you'll automatically get a zero on a quarter of your total grade, then just doesn't give out homework, so your whole grade is based off tests scores which have bad study guides
My chemistry professor is truly one of the best! While others might say otherwise, I've found that when you put in the effort and know what you're doing, she is incredibly supportive. She even offers extra credit opportunities, which shows she wants her students to succeed. Highly recommend her
Do ALEKS all the time because it will save your grade. And dont skip class, she does a lot of extra credit at the end of class.
She is unreachable outside of class, never answers emails, and most of the time you don't even know what's happening. To succeed in this class, do the Aleks homework and show up to class for the extra Credit.
is she a good professor? No, but shes not as bad as her reviews make her. You will easily pass with some effort. Her teaching style is not good but if you show up and do the bare minimum you should be just fine.
Absolutely appalling that she is still employed in any fashion by the university. Horrific professor, terrible attitude, and overall lazy. She had assigned the wrong textbook and didn't feel it was appropriate to let anybody know until exam time. Homework was ~6 weeks ahead of class schedule, which she also did nothing about. DO NOT TAKE.
She quite literally says "I'm not here to teach you, it's your job to teach yourself." It is an introductory class. Take it online please save yourself the hassle. She is just not a good professor and overall just doesn't want to do her job.
I genuinely did not like anything about this course. Powe is very nice herself, but her method of teaching is terrible. Very lecture-heavy with the majority of the grades based on difficult exams. If you don't pay attention in lectures, you will not get a good grade in this class, even after the slight curve. Would not take again.
Isn't very clear when teaching topics, teaching methods don't really make sense to me, and most of the homework isn't even taught so you'll have to teach yourself majority of the time.
Her own words she does not "believe in lecturing." I was in her Chem101 LECTURE.
AVOID! Just take it online, unless you have to take it in person. Sign up for tutoring immediately and prepare to study. Everything the negative comments are saying is true. I didn't believe it at first either, until it was too late.
How this women is still allowed to teach is beyond me
Was hardly accessible outside of class. Doesn't make your grade known until the class is over. Luckily she gave my class extra credit to people who stayed until the end, I HIGHLY recommend doing any extra credit that you can. This class was very hard for no reason.
When confronted about an incorrect grade, her response was "Well you don't really need that fixed, your grade looks good enough." I did well in this class, but no thanks to her.
