Class is mostly test based but the teacher is willing to tutor and work with students if asked.
He is truly an amazing professor! Ask lots of questions, he is there to help! He wants to see you succeed. His lectures can go by quick but he is more than willing to take the time to recover material, just let him know! He thoroughly explains everything. Chem is a hard subject, but he makes it seem so simple.
Professor Negrete is an AWESOME teacher! Yes, you have to study your butt off, but he gives clear and precise direction and provides sample questions, quizzes and exam reviews to prepare. He also offers redemption points and extra credit-he is willing to answer any concerns or questions you may have. Attendance is a must! One of the best!
Professor Negrete is an AWESOME teacher! Yes, you have to study your butt off, but he gives clear and precise direction and provides sample questions, quizzes and exam reviews to prepare. Attendance is a must! One of the best! If you study hard and apply yourself, you will pass!
Straight to the point and makes things easy to understand
Alex is a great professor. He bases 80% of your grade on exams. If you're there for all lectures, review days and study well you will definitely pass this class.
Alex was an AMAZING professor! I recommend him to anyone who really needs that 1 on 1 interaction and to anyone who are visual learners. Emails back FAST to your questions and is willing to answer any questions you have in class, does not mind a million questions. Gives plenty of examples in class and really cares about his students doing well!!
This man does not need my positive review. He is great. Truly loves chemistry. Makes a normally difficult subject seem sooo simple. All you have to do is ask, and he is there for you. Great professor.
This is a difficult class but Alex makes it easy! He is always willing to answer any and all questions and will stay after class and work with you until you understand. You have to show up and study hard but he will give you every opportunity to pass. He also offers redemption points on the final exam. You wont regret taking this professor.
Great guy, chem is difficult as it is and he tries his best to clarify when needed. Very easy going teacher. Attendance is not mandatory (except on test and lab days) but if you don't show up to lectures it becomes very difficult to pass.
Makes what can be a difficult class seem so simple and straightforward. Solid choice.
Alex is a wonderful prof!! His grading is clear and helps students when you need it. The class is very test heavy, but everything you need to know is given in his lectures. His lectures are clear and labs are fairly simple to understand. He lets you use a half sheet of paper on the final and your lab manual for the lab exam.
Taken during Winter (6 weeks). I would recommend him 10/10. USE HIS TEST REVIEWS!! Although great & funny, his lectures are very to the point and condensed (with that said I would recommend purchasing the Kennedy/Basiri Chem Hybrid book; It has all lectures and lab manual combined). Good with answering emails and any questions in class. Loved him!
Took him during the winter session and if you just stick to the work and pay attention in class you can get an A. NEVER be late to lab or he kicks you out. He wants to help you succeed and answers all questions. Homework is a must. Didn't buy the book but you need the lab manual an di printed all the lectures.
He is very nice, funny and his expectations are clear. He is very willing to help you understand the material after lecture during free time and will email you if you ask for help. However, he isn't as thorough with the lecture as I would have liked. I had to get a Tudor even with his help after class.
Alex is a great professor and excellent example of what a professor should be. Chemistry is not easy at all but Alex helps it make sense to you. Study and you will earn the grade you studied for. Funny guy and most of all respects his students. He is by far the fastest professor to email you back!
This was a tough class but I really enjoyed it. He has really good lectures. However, theres so much material that you have to go out and actually read and study on your own if you want a good grade. Sticks to the syllabus and is clear about what is gonna be covered for exams. Great professor as long as you embrace the suck and put in the work.
Alex is an awesome professor and always helps us when we are struggle. Only 5 credit score for each homework so grading is just exam based. No extra credit.
Alex was a great teacher. I took his chemistry in the winter semester and passed with a B. His grading scale is very fair and he is super helpful. He answers any and all questions in class or via e-mail. His lectures differ from the text which helps gives a better understanding of the material. He is super nice, would take any of classes again!
I don't really like chem and I was dreading having to take it but Negrete made it enjoyable. Labs were fun and I really learned chemistry. Be sure to go to lecture and labs. It is important to compare your lab answers to his because the lab final is open-book, and if half of your answers are wrong you're screwed.
Professor Negrete was amazing, I struggle in math and he made chemistry easy. I enjoyed going to class. He was very helpful, stayed around after class to answer questions and emailed back right away if you needed help on the homework. Great teacher.
Great teacher! This does not mean this is an easy class but he gives you the tools you need to succeed. Put in the time to Study reviews and practice tests and you will pass! Would definitely take again!
Honestly one of the best professors I've had so far. If he taught other subjects as well I would definitely take them. He is very laid back but gives you all the tools you need to succeed.
Alex was one of the best teachers at vvc! Chem is a tough class so please take advantage of the lab time given to ask him questions. PLEASE do not be late to any of the labs on Wednesdays! He will kick you out if you are even A MINUTE late! Tests are usually 40 questions, and he will grade your exam on the spot. Made Chem enjoyable if effort is put
I took chem 100 during summer semester 18 with another teacher and failed. I decided to try it with Negrete and I passed with a B. It was a tough class for me but professor Negrete made it halfway enjoyable as well as understandable. Its amazing what a difference a good professor can make when taking a tough class!
I failed chemistry once before, and I wasnt too excited taking it again, this time with a different professor. Professor Negrete was fair in his grading. He answers and clarifies any questions you may have. He is an awesome professor!
This is a very hard class well for me it was. But he is a awesome teacher and wants you to pass but you must go to him and talk to him about what you need help with and he will help. Lab is mandatory if your a sec late you wont be able to participate. He is a really cool teacher and though I didnt pass this semester Im taking him again.
Good teacher, cares about students. Really laid back, expect to do your work.
Chemistry is difficult so it takes a lot of work and studying. Your grade is based on the test heavily. Homework is only worth 2.5 points. He is very patient with questions and will do what he can to help you understand the material. His lectures reflect right off the textbook. Many resources are available on blackboard to help with the material.
I took hybrid course with Kennedy/Negrete. Just take Kennedy or Negrete-- do NOT DO HYBRID with BOTH. Negrete is funny, like really funny but he treats the class like it isn't his, and will redirect you to Kennedy since it's his course, Negrete is supervising the lab. Hardly any real contact with Kennedy. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. good luck
Professor Alex is extremely caring and so down to earth. I was stressed at time I wouldn't receive an A, but he is always willing to help clarify and answer questions. GO TO THE PRE-LAB/REC. You obviously have to put in the time to understand the material, but the homework is harder than than exams. The slides are the best to prep for exams.
6week winter: INTENSE. Get ready to study about +10 hours a week on top of class. The book that's used has a website on vvc by kennedy that has lectures, practice tests! Make flash cards, get a study group, take notes, ask questions! Grades are on exams, labs, and homework. Extra credit is secretly offered you won't know which assignment is the EC.
show up to the labs or you cant use your lab book on the lab exam which he lets you use. The lab exam has questions straight from the labs so show up! The lab is worth 80pts. 4 lecture exams worth 100pts each. HW is 5pts each. THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT! He is not lenient on grades. If you have a 69% he will not raise it so do your best on exams!
Awesome teacher. Even in the midst of Covid he was very helpful. You can tell he really loves his students. Very test heavy though, so make sure you know the material in the book for the exams.
He was not considerate about the whole pandemic. Never offered anything else to help, it's a hard time for everyone right now and he simply didn't want to acknowledge that. 4 exams and they make or break you, do bad on one exam and you're whole grade is screwed. I wouldn't recommend him if you have to work long hours.
long lectures, little help. Unless you have time to email him everyday to show him you're trying, He simply does not care about you at all. Not everyone can email a teacher to see how they're doing. We are adults...
This online class is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken in my life. Although all lectures were pre-recorded his demeanor always seemed nice and genuine; therefore he seems like a nice guy. He demonstrated care for his students by sending emails and reminders if you need help simply ask him. He is attentive with students concerns!
You have to be ready to read and watch his online lectures more than once to understand certain concepts. If you do that you will pass his class. The exams are worth a lot if you fail one exam it drops your grade by a lot keep in mind that discussions and homework aren't worth a lot of points so make sure to take exam seriously.
Easy class as long as you really study and watch all the videos. Also for the exams you need to be available for the time that is scheduled !! we had discussions but theyre easy and he explains them well. Good professor. Emails back too.
Alex is the best Chem. teacher at VVC, he has a way of breaking things down and explaining so that you understand. He tries to keep it as simple as possible. He is available outside of class for questions and concerns. He is firm but fair.
Literally as if your learning on your own through YouTube vids. vids are 2-3 hours long & doesn't break down anything He does 0 work as a professor I took the spring 2021 class & his videos are from the fast summer classes of 2020 not approachable no hw, but tests make up your whole grade & doesn't help with actually learning subject. doesn't care!
Very few points for homework assignments. But if you do the work and follow his lectures with the book you will get a good grade. He thoroughly explains in his videos to make it easier to understand. I was dreading taking this class but now I have a better understanding of Chemistry.
In short, this class is all on your own. The only thing that makes up your grade are the 5 exams. Nothing else, literally. So if you do bad on the exam, thats it. I honestly dont recommend this class unless you are willing this sit & watch his 2 hour lectures on your own. Although he is reachable through email & office hours, I dont recommend!
Very organized. Gives the WHOLE semester assignments in advanced. Tests are locked for certain days only. Exams are EVERYTHING. Your homework is honor system. He answers your email q's within 1-24 hours. 0 tolerance for missing any test. Recorded lectures (2hrs + so are Kennedy's) are VERY thorough and answers your q's as you go along.
He is an amazing teacher but the test are worth everything so make sure you study really hard to do well on the test. I flunked one and it changed my grade drastically. Ask questions and send him emails. He gets back quickly
This teacher is really amazing and makes chemistry so easy. I had a hard time in high school. The class is hard but make sure you really study because the test are worth your whole grade. One bad test grade really affects your grade. I would also suggest his hybrid or the face to face rather than the online course if you need extra assistance
I took his classes in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, I was really nervous at first, but now I enjoy chemistry because of him! He is willing to stop and break down any problems students may have and really wants to make sure his students understand the material. Make sure to have a calculator handy!
He truly loves chemistry and he makes it generally easy to understand. Grades are based off of your exams and homework only so it is very easy to get a bad grade but you just have to study and memorize in order to pass. He is super easy to talk to, if you need help he is more than willing to help and explain it into more depth for you!
He's a good professor with a great sense of humor, but he is very lenient on due dates and deadlines so make sure you attend every test and lab on time.
He is a cool person just not a good chemistry instructor. He lectures very heavy. The test do not match the lectures. The test are your main percentage of grade. If you fail a test or two, you fail the entire class. Homework is not worth much at all so it does not help your grade. The lab quiz is the only test anyone passed in our class.
I really enjoyed this class. I ask a lot of questions and not once has he ever made me feel bad, well there was that one that that he, I am just joking, Alex is a wonderful Professor and I am really glad that got to take him! I always recommend him to people I know that want to take chemistry.
I took his class during the Fall semester of 2021. He was very candid since day one that this class requires a lot of time to study. Unfortunately, most of my classmates were struggling (a few dropped out), but the final lab exam helped the final grade. At any rate, you have to put in a LOT of time if you want an A for this class.
Prof. Alex Negrete is awesome. Super helpful. Always willing to help breakdown any questions you may have. Attendance is IMPORTANT, he will work with you so you can make all your classes. If you miss one lecture/lab you'll be behind, so DON'T miss! Also, be ready to take notes, they will save you!!
He gives very great lectures and makes chemistry more entertaining. He is also very approachable and willing to work with you if you are unable to make it to class/lab. The only downside is that his class is VERY test heavy, so make sure you study extra for the exams. I would recommend studying for at least an hour everyday.
What a great class-- this class requires a lot of work but most of it is submitted for credit (homework, lab, discussion) but need to do it to do well on tests. The class is test heavy and you do have to study a lot. Lectures are long but he explains it really well. This class requires effort as most of our class dropped out or did poorly. No EC.
Negrete is absolutely amazing, he is respectful, kind, and he clearly enjoys his job. He was always helpful, if you need help don't hesitate on asking him, I always felt comfortable on asking him questions. Make sure you study for exams, don't miss labs, and make sure you check your answers in your lab book because the last exam is open book.
Ridiculous. Exams make up 70% of grade. No notes or book. Timed. Gives lots of other assignments that have little to NO affect on your grade. Literally gives you assignments that are worth 0 credit, but if you don't do it you get dropped. Expects 4 hours Mon-Sun of studying. People have other demands. Can't take 4 hours JUST for your class.
I did lectures online which were clear and easy to understand. The class grade is based off a few tests, a lab exam, and homework. This class is easy to pass if you simply study and invest time into it! Alex is super nice and willing to answer any questions you have.
Worst class ever, would not recommend taking Chemistry with any professor at VVC.
The course was well organized. The lectures were pre-recorded and lengthy, ranging from 1-3 hours. He explained the lessons thoroughly in the lectures, making them quite helpful for learning challenging materials. Overall, I wouldn't describe the class as easy, but putting in consistent effort will make you pass. Great class and would take it again
Don't recommend at all
Prof is responsive and helpful, but very condescending. He also makes assignments worth very little points ike 0.2 each and many questions on an online platform that makes mistakes grading. Some assignments are worth 0 points and you will be dropped for missing them. There are better professors that don't have a superiority complex. Save your $$.
The professor knows that most students fail the class, yet doesn't offer extra credit, or opportunities to help raise their grades. He makes the lectures too complicated, and the HW is completely different. When I try to find a helpful YT video to explain better I can't, his problem types are too specific. Getting help from an email isn't teaching.
Tough class, but Negrete was very helpful, and quick to reply to my emails. Chem was hard for me, but he teaches it in a better way that I understood more. Lots of work (Winter) but I got through it. I prefer his lecture videos to TJ's.
He does not offer extra credit, but if you reach out to him, he will help you. He is a good Professor; he answers his emails fast and gives feedback. Labs are hard to watch the video lectures. Take notes from the labs for the Lab test. He uses lockdown browser and webcam for the exams.
Hard but he explains things well and gives out study guides to help, office hours are a little inconveniently timed but if you can go he clears up questions well. He's tied in 1st with Nguyen for the only Chemistry teacher here that isn't so bad they seem like they are actively sabotaging you. So take him or Nguyen and avoid the rest.
He teaches well and is an entertaining teacher. You can ask him questions whenever you feel lost about his lectures, and he would give you good feedback! I'll definitely take him again if I need to.
Just took this 8-week course. It was a good amount of hw but plenty of time to finish. 4 exams. He answers emails promptly. Would take a course with him again.
He was making the class more difficult by making students pay 56$ for a learning app. I did not have to do that for other classes I've had to take online.
If you are a terrible test taker DO NOT take his class. Tests are what make up most and almost of all your grade. Homework and Labs are easy but the tests are hard and you're not allowed to use notes and have a lockdown browser. He expects 4 hours or more of studying as well. If you love exams with no notes, this class is perfect for you.
Don't take this professor if you are a bad test taker and don't like lengthy lectures, the lectures range from 2-3 hours. He expects his students to study 3-4 hours a day every day which is inconsiderate for people who have jobs and other responsibilities his homework and labs are only worth 3 points and the tests make up most of your grade.
Professor Negrete is a good teacher. If you are struggling in his class, he will help you. He communicates well, which is what made a difference for me. As long as you demonstrate that you care about passing, he is willing to assist you. Participation matters in his class.
His classwork is what you expect of a chemistry class pretty much. I took an 8 week course and I got a B and thats when I missed a few assignments. I believe getting an A in his class is very doable! I would take his class again for sure. Beware, he does have a textbook required which is about 110 dollars, and an online program which is about $60.
This professor is so rude, he comes off as nice but in reality is extremely rude and weird I don't understand how he has good reviews he accused me of cheating twice and ignored my emails I would send him with questions. He expects his students to do good but will post 4 year old lecture videos for the online classes.
This professor was very understanding. He would always respond to my emails in a timely manner even if I was confused in the beginning of the semester. The first week and I think week 4 will be very difficult weeks workload wise, if you can thug it out and get past those weeks though, you'll be alright. Overall 10/10 Would take this professor again
I DO NOT recommended taking the 8 week mini semester with this professor.
my rating may be a little biased because i HATE chem. but also the professor does not make the class any easier. i dont enjoy his style of teaching and he is not very responsive or helpful to emails or questions. like others have said, he expects 3 hours/day studying 7 days a week. i would consider other professors if you have to take chem.
Had to retake chem and I felt that his lectures were incredibly helpful. They are long, but put it in 2x speed and he explains this difficult subject very clearly. Do his practice tests, and I promise you'll do just fine. I took the 6-week course and honestly only studied a couple times a week and got the highest grade in the class. Study!!!
Please don't take this professor!!! He won't give extra credit. 4 Exams are 100points and you fail one it's hard to bring your grade up. It's pretty much you know the material or you don't.
This professor has very long lectures if you're doing online. If you have never taken chem or barely remember it, I would not recommend taking the 8-week course. If you fall behind it's extremely hard to catch up. His exams have lockdown browser. YES, YOU HAVE TO STUDY IN THIS CLASS! He is very helpful and even offers zoom sessions for it.
He was really good at giving feedback, has really clear instruction, assignment are easy to follow and only thing is you have to pay for another website to do your homework ,he was really nice to bump up my grade to different letter. and I didn't do any extra credit and originally my grade was at 76% he bumped up to 81 % so definitely take him.
One of the best professors I've had at VVC.. Enjoyed the class and everything we learned. All the labs, HW, & practice tests/ exams were very interesting to study and read all about. Fast grader, provided feedback, gave good instructions, and would always answer any questions I had , in class or through Canvas. Also had a TA which was helpful.
Prof. Negrette was a really nice professor, his expectations are clear since day 1. Get ready to self study a lot, he is willing to help and answer any questions you have, he responds quickly to emails. Make sure you do the lectures and the practices. He was nice enough to give the class bumps on the final class grades. Would def take him again.
I took a hybrid class with professor Negrete and Crossno. What I can say is make sure to study!! His lectures are pretty lengthy but everything he covers will help on his test and put the vid on 2x. Take notes and flashcards if you can!! All his tests are pretty self explanatory if you pay attention to his lectures. He answers emails quick as well!
Although his grading is test heavy, Prof. Alex actually cares about his students and the way he teaches them. His lectures are very clear and align with his exams. If I had the opportunity to take him for every chemistry class I 100% would. He's super patient, takes time to help students understand material if needed, all he asks is to be on time!!
This is my 2nd time taking Prof. Alex and again absolutely love his teaching methods. Super clear and understanding in what he shows in lectures and takes the time to help his students if needed. His lectures align with his exams and always makes lab fun. He's clear in what he wants in class and cares how his students perform in class, TAKE HIM!!
Great Professor takes time with students who need help. Labs were easy and fun, although lectures could be a lot. Super important to pay attention to help you in the exams. Overall great class and professor definitely recommend him for any type of chemistry class!!
Loved this class,Make sure to really pay attention to the lectures there a little lengthy but he honestly explains everything very well. There is homework which is turned in every couple of weeks as well as test which are 100 points, most of your grade. He is strict on these things. Can't miss more then two assignments will be dropped responds fast
