Completely dry and uninteresting. The readings for class are great, but she makes discussion so one sided that no one wants to participate. Calls people out for being "distracting" when they weren't. Refuses to repeat or speak up because she is "not a professional speaker". Take the course... not the prof.
Boring. Talks way too much. Can never open anything for discussion. Doesn't know how to work anything; from computer to youtube, needs help with just about anything. Is so disorganized that class is never kept on schedule and ends up rushing things
Not sure why she's getting all these critical reviews. She's a fantastic teacher. She really knows her stuff. She's super witty and intelligent. My only criticism is that she doesn't post her powerpoints on D2L which can turn out to be a huge setback when it comes time to study.
Bida is a fair marker, and you could certainly do a lot worse. She wants students to do well, and she is willing to help you should you ask. I wish she would have posted her slides, and that they were a little more developed (I would recommend taking notes.) She can be funny and witty at times. I would recommend her. I would give her B+.
she's a great proff, helps a lot and will give you very good feedback on how to improve more. she marks fair and easy if you do what is needed and attend class. participation marks are easy, u just have to say one thing in class and u get marks for it.
One thing that we truly enjoy in her class is her witticisms which keep the topic of academic writing light. She gives great feedback and helps you formulate your ideas.
Judging by the other reviews, I would say that Dr. Bida is different in a classroom setting, but for my online pop lit class, she was wonderful. I emailed for clarifications + to check my thesis', and she was so helpful. She isn't a hard marker at all, and as long as you participate in the discussion board/ think outside the box, you will do well!
Horrible professor. Weekly discussions aren't too bad but she marks essays so hard without any detailed feedback. Took this as an elective, but spent majority of my time on this course alone. She has unrealistic expectations and is very specific. Avoid her at all costs!
One of the best profs I've had. As someone who usually hates participation courses this one was a delight. She was so engaging, created a great classroom environment, and was very easy to talk to. She was very fair and consistent in her marking, if not a little generous.
This prof is amazing! Honestly, just show up and read the texts and you'll get a glowing mark. She really tries to keep everyone engaged, and her course had no surprises at all. Very clear grading criteria. You can't just cruise through this class, but if you put in the effort you'll get a straight A.
Lectures are guided by students who don't know the difference between literary analysis and useless commentary on the texts. Bida does a good job of taking those comments and transforming it into something that one can learn from. However, for a children's literature course, it was one of the driest classes I've ever taken.
Lectures were interesting and engaging, and Dr. Bida was able to turn simple ideas offered by students into something more complex and related to the course. You get marks for just saying something in class. She also is happy to give extra marks on assignments if effort is clearly shown.
the class is really boring but she really tries to make it fun for us. she is really helpful. and participation and attendance matter.
I asked her to clarify the instructions for an assignment for me before it was due and I did it exactly how she said. She then docked me hard for doing exactly what she told me to and claimed she never told me to do it like that. She interrupts me when I talk in class and criticizes a lot of what I have to say. It's embarrassing and degrading.
This professor is really passionate about the topics offered in class. She makes sure to spark our interest as well, especially by offering participation points. Lectures are mandatory because she does not post slides but they are extremely engaging. Gives good feedback that will get you great marks once you take it into consideration!
She took over our class when our initial professor fell ill, and she was AMAZING! Professor Bida knew the course material well and was an excellent teacher.
I really enjoyed Dr. Bida's class and she was always willing to help you improve your essays, especially if this is your first English course ever. She is also super reasonable in marking (grades fairly)! Definitely possible to do well if you stay on top of the readings and start writing assignments early!
Took this course as an elective, so unbelievably challenging. Expects so much from their students and marks essays incredibly hard. Poor explantations on what she expects, and then takes off marks for not doing what she expected.
For a lower liberal, Professor Bida marks really hard and has unreasonable expectations. I have taken upper liberal english/writing courses and the professors have been so much more friendly and easy going. I do not slack off or anything but she has a very subjective point of view, it's her way or the highway. However, the course is interesting,
Okay, so if english is not your strongest subject, i'd suggest you stay away from this prof. Although she made the course itself interesting, she marks very hard. She does expect a lot and makes you try hard for a good grade. Overall well respected prof but wouldnt take again.
Her expectations for us were unreasonably high and she is a tough marker. She doesn't give sufficient feedback so there's barely any space for improvement. This course is also really content heavy, expect to spend over 2 days a week on readings and weekly participation!! Would not recommend if you're looking for an easy A!! :/
She tries to be enthusiastic in class. She is way too hard of a marker, and for no reason. She takes attendance, so you lose marks if you skip class.
Shes very nice as a person. However, one of the worst markers I have come across with. She marks way too hard. Plus this class is pointless
I took this course as an elective and it was ridiculously difficult for no reason. Keep in mind this is a first year lower level liberal course so it really should not as difficult as it was. When you ask her for help, her feedback is very vague and even when you get her approval, she marks ridiculously hard. If you're looking for an easy A, avoid.
I found Dr. Bida to be a solid prof. She used pop culture references to make the course content easier. Her grading was clear & consistent & she was available outside of class hours to discuss assignments. There were many opportunities to earn grades (ex. Film worksheet, discussion posts) and as long as you did what was asked you got a great mark.
Not even half way done and I'm deeply regretting it. The weekly readings + discussion post + 2 replies to others, + more posts for the "extra" 5 percent... it just feels like too much for less than 2% per week. She is *very* particular about how she wants things written - she posts *several* lengthy announcements to elaborate beyond modules/outline
Awful Professor. She is very vague with her feedbacks while making a draft, but then is so overly specific of what is wrong after she has graded. I wouldn't reccomend her, and frankly, I don't even know how she got her PhD.
She's really a sweet teacher and her marking isn't that hard you only had to join zoom calls if you had questions so class wasn't mandatory. She posts a lot of extra resources to help so you'll definitely understand what's needed.
Wish she made video lectures during covid, sometimes felt that the class was just reading assignments and doing them blindly. Still, she responds to emails quickly and provides solid feedback on assignments.
I loved Bida as a prof! She was really in-depth with her explanations of things and was always available for extra help. She doesn't really lecture because most of the stuff was asynchronous but it didn't feel like you were really on your own because she was consistently posting on d2l and making sure that students were on the right track.
An amazing professor who tried really hard to make online learning easier for everyone, her teaching was great and she uploaded the readings with INTENSE annotations explaining anything and everything. The readings she had posted are actually interesting. Also, take advantage, she is so nice and will discuss your topics for your essays and thesis's
Prof. Bida was excellent during semester 1 of online learning. Lectures were not mandatory, all you really had to do was read the textbook in order to fully understand the assignments. She is a very fair grader and gives great feedback! Although the course is assignment heavy, it is not too difficult if you can manage your time well.
Prof Bida is very unclear with what she wants. Marks hard on draft and then posts how you should've done it after you hand it in. Stingy with helping you before the due date but after she will point out everything you did wrong. Inconsiderate about uncontrollable issues that arise especially while learning online. No sympathy for students.
An analysis a week, for 1.6 percent seems a little cruel to be honest. We put so much work into these analyses and they are barely worth anything. Also, Bida is a ridiculously difficult and inconsistent grader. I would avoid this prof.
Bida is too tough a grader for a lower liberal teacher...
This was a tough course - the homework assignments were worth so little yet they took ages to complete and it felt like a waste of time. Essays and exam werent too bad, if youre really specific with everything you should do well. The prof was nice and her Q&A sessions were helpful - not mandatory but she gives lots of info there.
Bida is very understanding of the difficulties students experience and accommodates. She pushes you to write like a real academic University student. As long as you ask for feedback on the papers before you submit, you'll do fine (She likes detailed analysis). Homework was a pain but set you up for the major assignments. Overall great Prof.
She is a nice person and professor but the actual course is really hard and you will have to work for a good grade. We didn't really have lectures, she posted slides and most of the information you get is by reading the textbook (which is free)
I thought this was going to be my hardest course, but I got mostly 100% on all assignments. follow her instructions perfectly and you'll get the grade (even if ur work is bad xD) just do what she asks exactly and you'll be fine
Her lectures were useless and I ended up having to teach the course to myself via the textbook, the weeks adding up to the midterm were learning to write a thesis with the midterm being a full research essay?? Crazy amount of workload, wasn't there for office hours and when asking for help skip doing so & read the textbook b/c that is the "help"
AVOID AVOID AVOID
She doesnt give proper feedback and assigns ridiculous amount of assignments for a lower liberal course. Dont take this class with her!
Dr. Bida was great and really helped me gain a better understanding of how to write at a university level. As long as you listen to the instructions you'll do fine. She also gives good feedback that helps a lot and her Q&A sessions were good for getting clarification.
This professor is absolutely terrible. She is unfair with grading does not give out part marks and provides so much explanation for something that could be said in a simple sentence. She is also not a compassionate nor kind professor by any means. I would highly recommend dropping her classes.
I took her due to recommendations from my friends and she was so caring. If you try she will support you on your way. I think she is a pretty kind grader. She gives two bonus assignments for a total of 5 %. People asked me the most obvious questions (because I was doing well) showing that they didn't put the effort in or read her instructions.
Bida was an amazing prof for a difficult course. She stated at the beginning that it was a difficult course and was straight forward with us. She gives great feedback which allowed me to do better on assignments. Papers were open ended based on interests. Tough marker but really nice prof overall.
All ssh courses are terrible! No proper feedback & most students were confused in this class. You really have to put in the work to get a decent grade. This course is a waste of time and money!
Not the best professor! She grades super hard and although the class work is heavy, it is fast-paced but easy to get work done, however, I would not recommend taking this class as a lower liberal class. It is unbelievable how hard this class was, considering this is a lower liberals class. I am never taking a class like this ever again.
Pretty terrible feedback and incredibly hard grader despite giving little to no feedback. If you follow instructions to the tee you'll get sub 70% almost always. Not even sure what she wants point despite doing everything in my power to get the best mark possible. Highly recommend finding a different course to satisfy your program requirements
Ok this class is boring but that's just because the material isn't fun. Bida = good prof. She tells you exactly what she wants and what she doesn't want. If you go to class she explains everything. She wants you to ask questions too. Grading was specific but not necessarily hard, I did everything the night before/ drew in class and got good marks.
Dr. Bida is a great prof. She takes the time to speak to students and gives feedback. The homework is super easy and its easy to get a good mark if you pay attention and take her feedback. Attendance is not mandatory but recommended because it can be a helpful class if you have trouble writing essays. She is kind and understanding with deadlines.
I didn't even look at the modules and only read 3 of the novels and still got an A+. If you're a good writer this class will be easy. There are 3 essays. Essays 1 and 3 are a close reading or research essay based on the texts, but essay 2 has a creative option where you can write a short story instead.
She's not a bad prof at all, I liked her a lot but her marking is very tough and gives very limited feedback.
The prof is very nice but the grading criteria was not consistent (1 essay I would lose points for citing in a way and then in the next essay be told to cite in the way I did the first time) and not enough feedback was ever provided. The textbook she gave access to was so hard to understand (so many abstract terms) and her lectures didnt make sense
INTJ, very on point and extremely categorized in almost every form of thinking. Good for some, but not for others
Professor Bida is extremely thorough, in both her grading and in her lectures. She will go over concepts multiple times throughout one lecture, making them a lot longer than they have to be. The main issue with this course comes from how boring it is. Only a few homework assignments and then 2 essays and the final exam (which is also an essay).
exclusive and insensitive toward a student trying to translate on his phone.
She is an unnecessarily difficult and unfair proffessor in terms of grading. Do not take this course! Take another course to satisfy your lower liberal requirements.
Dr Bida was very kind and clear with her expectations. If you participate in her lectures and do the easy homework, you have potential to get a really easy high mark. I found my writting improved in her class.
Dr. Bida is intelligent and reasonable. She is very detail-oriented and can be pedantic, but her expectations are clear. She is willing to go over concepts and provides robust feedback. Come to class!!! After the second half of the semester, it just "clicked" for me. She is VERY big on academic integrity (citations, plagiarism) so be aware.
She's like that one grader on Goodreads who gives a 5-star book a 1-star for the pettiest reasons. Avoid her. Her markings are beyond petty. If your already studying science or something hard and need an easy liberal to boost your GPA, don't take her class.
Very technical, robotic approach to material which is pretty much appropriate for an academic writing class. Heavily structure focused. Incredibly boring but helped that she was invested and energetic. Very responsive and helpful. Written assignment feedback wasn't helpful, have to ask for more.
Decent professor. It is very important to apply what is taught to your work. Lectures tend to be kind of repetitive and time feels to be going by slow. She is lenient if you have issues or questions, but tends to be quite pushy for participation. Understandable, but she can get kind of annoyed if no one participates. Kind of a hard marker.
Hello, here are some tips when taking this course. As this course is crucial to getting into TMU remember to stay positive as this professor's notes on your assignment are unclear. Make a group chat with your peers ( discuss the books you're reading). Make goals for yourself. Always answer two posts for discussions ( Will deduct points).
Dr. Bida is very kind and provides a lot of examples to clarify her course content. However her classes are very disengaging and her returned feedback is very vague and hard to make sense of. It's hard to get a good mark on her essays as she is a tough grader and her feedback makes it difficult to correct your past mistakes.
Do not take a course with this prof, i took this course as an elective thinking that it would be fine but she is a terrible marker and gives no feedback and her marking does not make sense. I passed all of my other classes with 90s but failed hers. Terrible prof do not recommend.
Aleksandra Bida doesn't give proper feedback and is a hard marker for petty reasons. She isn't a professor who wants her students to succeed but rather wants to see them fail. I emailed her multiple times to ask for feedback and she would give bland responses with no help. Don't take any classes with her unless you wanna ruin your gpa.
Terrible professor.
Hard marker with little reason. Even if you read every single part of the literature provided and understand it so perfectly she will find a way to mark you lower. Even for the creative assignment where you got to write about two comics she would say "Why didn't you do this?" etc even though it's creative. Disc posts is how you will up your mark.
MOST dreadful professor, downright demoralizing. The course should have been a simple English lower liberal but turned into an endless series of gruelling, impossible assignments. Avoid her class like the plague if you value your mental health and academic success. Save yourself the frustration & damage to your GPA. I wish i dropped her earlier.
Pros: - Gave options for discussion questions to choose from, so you could write about something you were inspired by - Assigned readings felt fairly spread out along the course of the term - Easy discussion marks Cons: - Unclear assignment instructions - Expects very academic writing style
Dr. Bida is not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved taking her course and really feel like she improved my academic writing immensely. Her feedback can be unclear sometimes, but she's pretty accessible for clarification. I'm very satisfied with what I got out of the class, as well as what I put into it.
When I saw the rating I was pretty nervous to take her class, but Prof. Bida was an amazing professor. She goes over the upcoming assignments in class and would give very helpful advice. She was very approachable if I ever needed help with an assignment and seems to genuinely care about your grade.
Prof. Bida has very disengaging and boring lectures where she tends to ramble, however I found myself improving as the course went on and catching myself when making the mistakes she constantly talked about. Her feedback when you go up to her in person is very thorough as well as her exam and assignment explanations and preparations in class.
Dr. Bida is an excellent prof. Asynchronous class is straightforward: 3 essays total and discussion board assignments. Grade has always lined up with the rubric and expectations. Readings can sometimes feel much, especially when you have other classes, but they are interesting. She is very approachable and extremely helpful by email or Zoom!
She's a boring lecturer and is a harsh marker as well. Bida does provide great and thorough feedback though.
How well you will do in her class seriously depends on how good you are at essay writing. She is a very nit picky marker but she seems nice enough. Her lectures are honestly so useless and very skippable
Prepare to write a lot because she does not post lecture slides. If you miss a class then youre on your own to find notes from somewhere else. She is a very tough grader, but she gives detailed instructions and pretty good feedback. Read the textbook, it actually helps, and do the bonus homeworks just trust me its a good mark booster.
For a professor who teaches academic writing, she sure as heck knows how to write assignments/homework where you don't understand what she's asking for. So be ready to send a lot of emails with questions. Bida is a tough marker, and very much picky, her lectures are long and sadly she doesn't post the slides afterwards. You'll be in the trenches.
Terrible teacher!!! She doesn't help you get better; she helps you fail. doesn't offer good feedback but does give a good F.
Tough Grader. I don't recommend this professor's courses.
too tough grader and very picky. I don't recommend.
Dr. Bida gives clear feedback and is a thorough grader, and is approachable and kind. Her lectures can be boring, but they are helpful and I would recommend going for extra credit, information on assignments, and in-class feedback because she does not post lecture slides. She provides very detailed assignment and exam instructions.
Be prepared to question if you doing stuff wrong or if the bar is just set in hell. Extremely vague instructions, and would help you with the work, but you'd still some how get it wrong
