i have been in Binghamton for 2 semesters. This is the best professor I ever had. He took the word "helpful" to another level. He joined the faculty couple of semesters ago. Originally from Russia. He doesn't have heavy accent like other professors. Very easy to understand. You can take any course he is teaching. Cares about students.Easygoing.
Really nice guy, one of the better math professors at Bing.
Great professor, one of the best in the math department. Very passionate about the subject and wants his students to do well. He has a Russian accent but he is completely understandable and is very good at explaining the material. He even gave his free time for a non mandatory computer project to help students apply the material. HIGHLY recommended
Overall good professor. If you show up and take notes you'll do well. Really helpful if you ask questions.
Good teacher, explained concepts well. Always available for extra help and tried to get us review sessions for tests. Could be funny, sometimes went on tangents about Russia. It is a math class though, if you don't go you will get behind. He gives homework but doesn't collect it; you need to do work outside of class.
The best professor I had at Binghamton so far. Extremely helpful and takes the time to carefully explain concepts until the entire class understands. Holds several review sessions before exams and is very helpful in office hours. Take any class with him!
He is one of the best professors in math. His class is a combo of Math 304 and 448 and he does a great job reviewing it. Has Russian dad humor. Grades are all tests, but he prepares u well with lots of examples. He's always there to help u, and don't be afraid to talk to him. The hw solutions prep u for the tests and are SUPER helpful. Dontskiptho.
Best professor I've had at Binghamton. Extremely good at explaining things and very helpful during office hours. GO TO CLASS! Seriously, I think he is a more generous grader to those who show up.
One of the few professors in this department that cares. If you can take a class with this guy, definitely do so!
I've had professor Polunckenko for only 3 class sessions, and I can already say he is the best math professor at Binghamton. Reasonably paced lectures, despite the difficult material. Genuinely cares about teaching his students. Awesome guy. Shoutout this guy!
Very nice prof I have ever met! This is my last class in this school, and he curves grade greatly. Clear lecture and he is willing to help you all the time. No hw need to be handed in and all things in the exam are based on the hw he gives you. If you have questions, just ask him. Take his class!
He is the best math professor I have had while studying undergraduate math. He articulates very clearly and his lecture paces are more than reasonable. He is also extremely receptive and encouraging of questions inside and outside of class. Tests are 100% of the grade, but he constantly reiterates the questions that will be on the test in class.
I know most students find him as an amazing teacher, but from my experience, hard to listen to during his notes, during office hours he doesn't help that much and assumes you heard that one time he said the concept on, and grades are legit only the exams, he does not care to fail you if you do poorly on it. Overall, wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Polunchenko is an awful professor. He spent the entirety of the first class talking about how it is a weed-out course and he doesn't really care about how we do. For many of us, we are not math majors and it is a class that is required for our major, so making it so difficult is not worth it. Honestly, my calc classes were more chill.
Professor Polunchenko was not wrong when he said he did not want to teach this class. He did not effectively communicate with students and the TAs about what was going on in the class, and he did not post the answer key for one of the Midterm Exams. The lectures were almost useless, as the material explained was different from what discussion. Skip
Professor Aleksey is an awful professor for an elementary class. While most of the students are taking math147 from various departmens, Aleksey threats the class as if everyone is MATH major. His midterms are not even related to homeworks that he had given.
Aleksey is a very strict grader. In the last 2 tests (which count 15% each for our final grade) the average was 66 and 73, neither of which had a curve considered. On one of our practice tests we used to study off of, the material was not even relevant to the test + he didn't even post the answer key. Don't even go to lectures, waste of time.
All that needs to be done is to prepare a slide show and solve questions from it instead of using a ridiculous book because this is an elementary course not advanced The communication between him and TA's is very weak and no one can predict what to do. He should definitely not give an elementary lecture but I'm sure that he is good at upper lev.
worst professor ever. made everything harder than it should've. he made the tests hard when they didn't have to be. made my gpa drop this was the only class that prevented me from straight As
Go to his office hours. He is always happy to help. Yes, I agree some of his lectures you won't understand because of his style of teaching, keep in mind this class is in Lecture Hall 1 students are easily destructed. If you sit in front, you'll understand. Overall pay most attention in discussion and also go to TA office hours. You'll be good.
worst professor, avoid at all costs
Don't trust the two comments above about the Math147. They are written by someone to support him. Worst class ever do not take that
awful professor, dont take a class with him if you dont have to. said multiple times he didnt want to be teaching the class and the only grades were tests and quizzes. was not helpful in office hours and was insanely unorganized, which made it hard to study for tests and the final exam. the practice exams he gave were nothing like the actual tests.
Please Skip that professor for under any reason. He always talks about how this lecture is unneccesarry. He tricks all the students with his useless midterm-practice, which is way easy but exam is totally different like a graduate program examinations. And he is proud of that because he is smiling while talking about how bad our exams. Just skip
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. Aleksey seems to not understand that everyone eventually to take this elementary course(as a prereq). this class is ridiculously hard and aleksey did not want to post the answer key to the final practice exam. the TA's in the class also do not communicate with each other and have conflicted answers with aleksey.
This teacher was awful. Extremely hard tests, and refused to give back credit for questions that were right but marked wrong. Lectures were extremely hard to understand, I learned entirely from the textbook and discussions. On the first day of class he told us that he hated teaching MATH147. Avoid taking this class at all costs.
The TAs mostly taught me everything. This professor is not worth it if you are someone who needs time to understand the information. He is unaccessible for office hours, he does not post answer keys, and brings up things on exams that were never mentioned previously. BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE!
He doesn't really seem suited to teaching an undergrad course. Maybe he's better in upper-levels, but seems apathetic to his students at best. Overcomplicates, and clearly doesn't enjoy teaching. As a math major, I really disliked this class. Get ready to be left in the dark
He's just not great. Seems to enjoy when people fail his tests and class
There's better ways to get your math credit. I can't advise taking him unless you're prepared to be disappointed. seriously. Don't take this
Your grade is built of 3 midterms,1 final, quiz grades(10 weekly quizzes 3 dropped). Lectures were kinda useless I pretty much taught myself everything with the aid of the TA's. Exams are harder than whatever practice he gives you. Not the best lecturer.
Grades his class on 10 quizzes 3 midterms and one final. Throughout the class I received 90s and 100s until I bombed the second midterm. I was unable to receive higher than a B average, so if you fail an exam, you're screwed over. Average for it was 68, refused to give a curve. Refuses to give extra credit and is a poor lecturer. TAs are helpful.
He is very condescending and closed off to questions. Goes on irrelevant tangents that often end up confusing the class. The lectures are pretty much a waste of time as the discussion sections and the TAs were the only helpful part of the course. Getting (or going to) a good TA is super important to understand the material and do well on the exams.
Aleksey was okay. Very boring lectures, and makes things in stats sound much more difficult than they are. Very very bad at explanations and answering questions. Get a good TA and you'll be fine. There are quizzes in discussion that are easy, and the finals are pretty straight forward. overall, easy class if you read textbook, and go to discussion
Class is rough overall. 3 exams (each 15%), a final (35%), and 10 quizzes (2 or 3 are dropped). The first exam was easy, avg. was about 90. The second exam avg. was 68, with no curve. As a student with a 3.9 GPA, it was unnecessarily hard and will tank my GPA. I went to one office hour, but kept saying the topics were "easy", Avoid this professor,
Questions in classes are really easy when compared to mid-terms. He is involuntary about giving this class. Unless you do not have another option, stay away from this class.
HORRIBLEEE
MATH 147 is difficult because it's now a weed-out course (no curve). Polunchenko isn't the most lively, but he's a good professor who explains complex concepts well and is willing to answer students' questions. However, his tests are sometimes harder than what he teaches in class. Don't skip lecture, and go to TA office hours.
majority of your grade is only exams and the practice he gives you isn't good review and isn't similar to tests. TA's are your best chance to get things out of this class and so is the textbook. I had to teach myself everything. He goes on random tangents in lecture (ex. first week was barely stats, he just talked about Russia vs Ukraine)
Shoutout to the head TA's for being there when he wasn't. I was blessed with a GOD of a TA and was able to pass the class very easily. Definitely not the same for everyone else. Lectures are unnecessary; PLEASE GO TO THE DISCUSSIONS. You have weekly quizzes and the TAs are there TO HELP. The tests weren't always completely on the material.
This class isn't hard, you just stink. Very easy class, but many people blame their frustrations on the professor. The course is very easy if you just go to discussion and practice problems. Tests are very reflective of the practice problems. He gives you practice exams and helpful (but not mandatory) homework.
Content is easy, but the professor is horrible and gets his own questions wrong sometimes and will teach material incorrectly. If you read the material though, go to discussion, and listen to and get help from the TAs and just completely ignore Polunchenko you will be fine.
Polunchenko is not interested in teaching this course. You won't gain anything from going to lecture. GO TO TONY CHEN he saved me. Use the practice questions from the textbook because his sample exams are easier than the real exams. Overall it's not impossible to do well in this course you just have to put in the time outside of lecture.
Course is not impossible to do well in. BUT you need a good TA. I had Sumruddi Thakar and she was actually awful. I could not understand her one bit and she was extremely condescending. AVOID HER AS A TA AT ALL COSTS. Try to get Tony or Thomas Galvin or literally anyone else but her. Going to lecture is virtually pointless. Read the textbook!
Do well on exams, they are not that hard if you go to TA office hours. The final was unfair and hard only focused on a few chapters out of 10s.
Lectures are useless, HW and textbook not required. If you really want the textbook (E-Book), split the cost with a friend. Watched the Organic Chemistry Tutor's videos on statistics and passed the course with an A-. Your overall grade is made up of 3 Midterms (15% each), 10 Quizzes in Discussion (3 lowest get dropped) (20%), and a Final (35%).
Horrible professor and useless lectures, does not care whether you pass or fail. I took this class twice... Get a pdf of the textbook and teach yourself with videos. Get a GOOD TA because you have to go to the discussion quizzes weekly (can't go to a different TA). Practice exams look pretty similar to the actual tests.
While many people complain about this class, it really is not bad. You can get by with a basic understanding of statistics. Make use of TA office hours and you will be completely fine.
He's not as bad as people say but if you don't study on your own then you won't do well. The course isn't that hard but if you're bad at math, Polunchenko won't be of much help. He talks about how he doesn't want to teach this course and gives a quiz every week during discussion. However, the tests are super easy if you know the basic equations.
Get ready to work on your own
I know math and I thought I didn't when I took this last spring. If it wasn't for Thomas the amazing TA, I would not have gotten a C. Youtube will teach you, that sums it up.
Horrible lecturer. Gets distracted by himself and does not know how to teach. Exam 1 easy. Exam 2 hard. Haven't taken exam 3 yet. No HW. 1 quiz a week in discussion. Attendance not necessary and probably easier to learn by yourself.
When a teacher starts off his first lecture by saying how much he hates teaching the class, that's a good sign that you're not going to have a fun time. I've noticed that he has good reviews on his higher level classes, so I'm certain he's a good teacher, but for 147 he doesn't even try. Your grade is determined by the TAs, so hope for a good one.
Completely unforgiving and useless as a professor. He started the first day of class by saying he doesn't care about this class because its extremely easy and doesn't require his attention. He take 20 minutes to explain a simple concept by going off on tangents and eventually not answering the question at hand. Horrible professor, avoid if you can.
An awful lecturer, and goes on tangents. Class has 3 midterms which heavily impact your grade. The first one was fair, but the second two were bad. Weekly quiz in discussions. Homework is optional and it is in the textbook. I would have learned nothing without the textbook and my TA. Really your grade depends on what TA you have.
Just don't do it. Elementary Statistics should be just that - elementary. Dr.Polunchenko, however, does everything in his power to make his exams as non-elementary as possible. His lectures are unhelpful, and it is up to the TAs to not only teach us the material, but also to correct the mistakes that Dr.P makes in lecture and puts on practice exams
Be ready to teach yourself the class. When solving a problem he will go completely off topic and never finish the problem.
His stats class presents itself like an upper-level course. This class is very very dependent on your TA, so your understanding of the content depends heavily on them. First exam easy, second exam difficult, and third exam had trick questions which made no sense as to why they were there. Good Luck and don't take this class with Polunchenko.
This class with this professor is just way too hard for a 100s level course. Do everything in your power to avoid taking it with him.
Absolutely horrible. He refused to let me retake a quiz I missed due to me being in the hospital back home. Goes on tangents and fails to teach the easiest of topics. Completely depends on his TAs, so if you have a bad TA you will fail. Avoid at all costs, worst professor I've had so far.
He started off the semester by letting us know he had no interest in teaching this course. This a 100 level course but feels like upper level math because he fails to teach even the simplest of concepts. Practice midterms are not similar to actual tests at all and you end up teaching yourself the whole course. Horrible professor, avoid at all costs
3 midterms 15% each. Final 35%. No graded HW. 20% quizzes, drops lowest 3--taken during discussion so depends on TA. He was my TA & he was good then, but HORRIBLE lecturer. Never go to lectures. I only learned during discussions. He takes down practice exams a few hours before the actual exam for NO reason! Learn off Organic Chemistry Tutor on YT.
I don't have to say much. Everyone else puts it better than me. For the love of god, take this course async at community college.
HORRIBLE. Do not take this class if you can avoid it. He said numerous times he doesn't want to teach this class and calls it too easy to be taught. If it was a different professor the class wouldn't have been too bad. But he is a terrible lecturer and is NOT approachable if you need help. Go to discussions, lectures don't help.
for your grade and for your sanity take this class with marie chazal or with literally anyone else
Do not take MATH147 with this professor if you do not absolutely have to. Your grade is determined pretty much by 3 tests and a final, and the average on all of these was in the 60s or 70s. His lectures are painfully boring, and you will not learn much from them. Read the textbook and go to discussion if you want to do well in this class.
Absolutely horrible. Had no interest in teaching the course and was useless when it came to lecture. Made the simplest topics extremely complicated and exams were horrible. Unforgiving and overall worst professor I've had at bing. Worst professor in the math department, avoid at all costs.
Absolutely the worst professor I have had at Binghamton so far. DO NOT take MATH 147 with him, he makes the easiest math course extremely difficult. Does not respond to feedback and is a horrible lecturer.
The material is not hard overall compared to most other math classes like Calc 1 or 2, however it is extremely dull which makes it hard to learn. Lectures are not valuble at all, using youtube and the textbook will save you time. Just make sure you find out what will be on each quiz. Be aware that midterm 3 and the final are much harder.
The TA's have no idea what's going on. Professor is very knowledgeable but can't explain concepts very well. Choose a different professor if not, good luck
Attending class isn't needed, he posts all his slideshows after class. Attendance at discussions is mandatory, and there will be a quiz for almost every discussion. The final exam focuses heavily on the third exam topics, so study those especially. Overall the class will be easy as long as you read the textbook and use organic chemistry tutor on yt
AVOID!! Awful teacher; He said he didn't care about the class and he really meant it. Doesn't want to see you succeed- would make mistakes on his own answer keys and remove practice tests the morning of the test so you couldn't access it. Lectures were optional and overcomplicated, go to discussion! Take MATH147 with anyone else if you can.
Prof. Polunchenko was a very uncompassionate professor. He would fail a large portion of his students and would not offer a curve in the class or a test drop. In addition, he would make unwanted remarks about gender, weight, etc. It took an unreasonable amount of time to get grades back, and he would remove practice materials from students.
Really nice guy but most people struggled in this class. The entire class is based on 3 test grades, a final, and 10 quizzes. The first test and quizzes are easy so score your points there. After that good luck, lol. The practice tests will give you a ballpark estimate of exams but weren't really reflective for the last 2.
Funny guy but the class was terrible. Had to teach myself half the content from test 3 onward. In class he doesn't just put the formulas up for us to learn, he just goes over scenarios that don't help with understanding the materials. His test answer keys are also nothing like the actual exams. Get ready to teach yourself stuff he never taught you.
He is a petty person. I found out that he spoke ill of me in front of other teachers. Are all professors in the mathematics department so mean-spirited?
AVOID! Never take his class, it's terrible. His practice midterm is completely different from the actual midterm. The first midterm is the easiest. Good luck with the rest. If your final is below 60, he will fail you in this course. There are about 10 quizzes in a semester, worth 20%, so make sure to take advantage of these opportunities to score!
Terrible !!! 147 is already a tough course, and he is making it even harder. The practice tests are there for nothing. It's different from the test, and you don't have solutions to it, so even if you did the practice you will have no clue of whether you got it right or not. Just RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN( I took his class b/c the advisor recommended.. TAT)
He hardly teaches, only reads off of slide shows generated by the textbook and expects us to already understand the material. He purposely makes the practice very diffferent from the exams
the worst professor i will most likely ever have. does not teach, just reads off presentation slides then does a SINGLE example question for the rest of the class. gives practice exams that do not help with the actual exams. weekly discussion quizzes worth 20% of your average. do NOT take him unless you ABSOLUTELY have to!!!
He grades on 10 quizzes that are taken in discussion (3 are dropped), 3 exams, and the final. The lectures are useless and discussions aren't much help either. My TA taught a lot of topics wrong and would teach topics the week after we were tested on them. The class average on each of the exams was about a 50% and he doesn't curve. Don't recommend.
His lectures were some of the most useless I've ever seen. This isn't supposed to be a hard class, but it was 10x more difficult than it had to be because I was teaching myself. Make sure you do well on the tests and quizzes at the beginning of the course because it suddenly gets hard and weird at the end. Exam 3 cooked me, ate me, and spat me out.
Absolute muppet. Does not know how to teach whatsoever. There are two sections of the same class, MATH 147, our section does not get any cheat sheets, while the other section gets two pages. There is no curve for the class, even with test average of 40-60. No graphing calculators, only simple four function calculators. DO NOT TAKE.
This is one of the worst classes I've ever taken. The lectures are boring, and the professor rambles on about topics that aren't even going to be on the exam. The practice tests do not reflect what will be on the exam. You'll be better off studying from Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube. Attend discussions; they'll help you more than lectures.
Passed calc thought stats would be EZ Wait until W date to post grade for T2 glad I W he never Curved&friends who tried 2 stay fail had friend in other stats prof let them bring index card HE considers it cheating if you write list of formulas on test@start+waited 2 tell us until we were handing in T1 so anyone who did that W/o knowing automatic 0%
Passed Calc, should be cake "Easiest College lvl Math, yet students still fail my class, don't know why" Other stats prof let students bring IndexCard, he considers it cheating if you even write a list of formulas on T & waited until till we were handing in T1 to tell us so students got a 0 for doing this before they even knew it was 1 of his rules
Avoid at all costs. Class is absolutely awful. Average in the class for exams was FAILING. He refuses to curve and refuses to amend exams.
Avoid at all costs, he is a terrible professor. He makes it almost impossible to pass the class; the class average for each the exams was failing and he refuses to curve. He considers it cheating if you write down formulas on your exam and would give you a zero for doing so. His exams are way too long and difficult to be completed in an hour class.
Do not take this class like all jokes aside
Do not take this class if you have the option not to
Imo, he knows his stuff but is not fit to teach. I attended a few of his lectures at the beginning of the semester but they just confused me even more, so I never went back. Discussions were somewhat helpful, they were more like review sessions. The quizzes and review material were really easy, nothing compared to the midterms and the final.
This class got me hysterical.
This class was a doozy. Dr. Polunchenko is certainly not a good professor, but if you listen to the lectures and follow up with reading the textbook you should be alright. The TAs are helpful too, but overall expect to put in a little more out of class effort to succeed. Dr. Polunchenko sometimes goes on funny tangents, so that's a silver lining.
I would not recommend this class with this professor unless you absolutely must. He displays complete indifference to the success of his students and to teaching the class in general. If you want to do well, don't bother going to class, just read the textbook and do the homework.
Horrible. Absolute worst. Tests are ridiculously difficult for a 100 level course. He has ZERO interest in seeing his students succeed. Ta's were almost ALWAYS confused during tests and were little to no help. content is not difficult. HE IS. Avoid if you can.
He does not teach very well and is disorganized with his lesson plan. Some of the TA don't know what they are doing either.
This professor is outstanding for Exam FM prep. This class was an actuarial bootcamp & we did textbook SOA problems daily. There were daily quizzes which was stressful but he is very accessible in office hours or by appointment and genuinely wants his students to succeed. You def need to spend hours doing problems but work hard and you'll succeed!
He really understands the material in this course and on the FM exam. His lectures aren't super important to pay attention to, you can learn everything from the textbook/Coaching Actuaries. One question quizzes at the end of class; on both tests and quizzes just setting up the right equations is 8/10 points. Tests were pretty fair.
It was veyr hard to learn he didnt teach well and gave barley any credentials for the test. The TA's are more helpful than the professor but they also dont know 100p what was happening in class.
Avoid this class if you can. The professor seems disinterested and makes it really tough to do well. Definitely rely on the textbook, study sessions, and tools like Unstuck ai to prepare - skip lecture if you must. Just get through it!
Had him for Financial Math and he was great! His lectures basically taught us directly from the textbook, and after starting a new topic we would do mostly practice problems in class. I thought the class was pretty straightforward, and the quizzes weren't bad at all. Tests were also very fair, do the homeworks and you will do good!
He taught the class as if it were a master's-level course rather than an introduction. He laughed at students asking questions during the exam, stating, "I knew students would not know this because you do not go to class." Mind you, we did go...he just did not teach it well. My worst class in all 4 years at BU, highly do not recommend.
