Uses alot of pictures in lectures and not alot of notes...recently she's been using a lot of concept maps which i personally don't like because it allows chances for necessary points to be lost from exams and assignments..if you go to her and asks questions she's very helpful though
If you're able to decipher broken english, this class is for you. that being said, she is always available for extra help and is willing to debate test questions with you, if there's a good reason
This is was one of the hardest class i took last semester. This class brought my gpa down tremendously! If you have not taken AP bio in high school i would not take this professor. Tests are extremely long and the questions are difficult to understand. Stay away if you want a decent gpa!!! Dont take her! AWFUL!!
One of the nicest professors i'd had, but her class is still somewhat difficult. she is always willing to help so don't be shy
great teacher. study study study... hard class
Don't expect a good grade unless you study daily and truly understands what she is saying during lecture. Just attending lecture is not enough unless you really comprehend the material. This was so hard it made me rethink my major and change everything.
Her class is only hard if you've had NO experience in HS biology. Her tests are average and they are based mostly off of her lecture. Just buy Connect Plus. The pages from the book are in there and it's A LOT cheaper. She's REALLY nice to you if you make an effort to ask questions and attend office hours. Also, she's really friendly and helpful.
Harder then most professors but forces you to work very hard but A's are almost impossible. If you want to take this class for a good grade, don't take her. If you love bio and want to learn well and be knowledgeable in the subject afterwards, she is a good choice. Very nice. Very helpful when approached at office hours.
She is very tricky with her exam questions, her slides are extremely confusing, and yes she is nice during office hours but during class time she is a demon. I took AP bio in highschool and loved it. Even planned on going to med school until I took this class. Now I'm a rising sophomore with a horrible GPA. She does not care about her students.
The worst Biology teacher at the University of Delaware. She gave me an F. I came to all her office hours and studied til the cows came home and she laughed in my face when I asked for extra credit. take my advice and STAY AWAY.
If deciphering English is your major, you'll definitely get an A. Her exams are not something you can study for and expect an A. You literally sit there rewording every sentence to your understanding. Then when you decipher the question, you're not really answering the question she wants. I was lucky to have a great TA for lab that helped my grade.
Took her for honors bisc207. Alenka is a nice lady but should not be teaching, especially the honors section. She makes the course cluttered and disorganized. I didnt get anything out of going to the lectures - i basically had to read the book and teach it to myself. Got an A- tho.Her accent is really bad and doesnt explain anything well.
One of the most challenging classes I've taken so far. If you like bio take her she will make you thing and use the concepts you learned. She's very nice and helpful.
Alenka is hard but these ratings give no credit to her as a teacher or students for their own responsibility in learning the material. Study hard and understand. Don't go for memorization cause you won't get far at all. Suck it up
I studied an insane amount for this class and no matter what I'm still not going to pass it. If you weren't already good at biology then there's no hope for you. Even kids that took AP bio in high school are struggling. Alenka is a nice person but she expects way too much out of her students. This is an INTRODUCTORY course. Do not take her.
Alenka is a nice woman and a decent teacher. After taking this class you should have a relative understanding of all the material covered. However, a relative understanding is not enough to get an A in this class. Tests are very difficult and analytical - memorizing will do nothing for you. So, study hard and you will be able to get a B to an A-.
Do not take this class. Avoid it at all costs. Alenka does not teach anything that is relevant to her tests. I studied forever for this class and it didn't help at all. Even at her office hours she didn't explain anything, she told me to look online for help. Unless your a genius at biology, do not take her.
Alenka expects a lot. Always willing to help but is sometimes unclear in explaining things, unless you keep asking her until it makes sense to you. I took AP Bio and got a 5 on the exam, yet I am struggling to keep my grades up. Tests are impossible-memorizing and understanding gets you nowhere, questions are all very analytical & difficult.
Great teacher, very nice, learned alot. Don't expect to get an A, she is very hard but logical. Textbook very useful worked very hard for the class my lab grade is what brought my whole grade down if not would have had a B, lab exams are murder. Still don't understand why most people hate her. I guess she is good for people who like textbook use.
She really knows her stuff. It's a hard class, I dozed off a lot unfortunately, but not because I was uninterested. go to her office hours, she's always very willing to help students. You need to study a lot for this course, knowledge from a high school AP course isn't going to save you
I took this class 2 years ago and although hard, I feel a need to stick up for Alenka. She is a great professor if you make the effort to listen in class and study the textbook relentlessly. Start weeks ahead of time and you'll get an A, like me. I'm not a genius either, and actually a psychology major. Do the work and the grade you want will come.
This is definitely a HARD class. However, her tests reflect exactly what she discusses in class. I recommend taking notes via computer in class because she goes very fast and then later reading the book and relating it to topics discussed in class. If you do this and keep up with the lectures by putting in time everyday, you can get an A!!
I don't think she is as bad as people say, however the class is difficult. I recommend reading the textbook before AND after each lecture. She teaches VERY fast, so taking notes is difficult. Everything that is taught in class is in the book. This class requires a lot more work and effort but if you set your mind to it, a high B is possible.
Dr. Alenka is an amazing professor who is always willing to help. Obviously its a college level course and typically people don't study enough for it. Definitely a weed out course for pre-med majors. Read, study and study some more and you can pull off an A!
Alenka is a really nice lady, but she's an awful teacher. Her tests are ridiculously hard and barely resemble her lectures. going to the class is not enough. You have to read the book and then read it again in order to understand it. She is very difficult to understand, her questions are worded poorly, and she tries to trick you as well.. STAY AWAY
Literally I have no idea what these people are talking about...I haven't opened the book once and I'm getting straight up A's
She is TERRIBLE. she gives us questions that she doesnt teach about and are not in the book. she expects us to know more than medical researchers and when i went to her office hours she just told me i dont study correctly. this is the only class ive ever struggled with... its her not me! shes ridiculous and test are impossible..
I am doing pretty well in her class and I think she's a pretty good teacher. Nobody said this class would be easy, so you're going to have to study. Some of the things she puts on exams aren't in the power points but if you review material in the book you should be fine. I recommend her, especially if you have taken biology before!
She is very nice. If you don't understand something or just have a question she will always try and help or describe it in a different manner. The course is not an easy A you will need to work for it. With minimal work you will get around a C. GO TO CLASS. she has clickers occasionally, in class quizzes, and group assignments.
I was very excited coming into the class having a love of Biology, and being a science major. Professor Alenka ruined that, I strongly suggest not to take her she even said herself she had to work on her teacher skills. Have to read the textbook thoroughly and attend all classes while taking notes. Not a very fair teacher at all, lots of work.
Alenka is terrible at explaining things. Her lectures are usually unhelpful and you need to read the textbook in order to do well. Exams are tricky with a few essay questions and there's barely enough time to complete them. She writes and speaks in broken English. Dr. Safran taught a few of her lectures and is twice as worse as Alenka.
I took her honors. I am a very solid student and rarely get B's. My advice. Stay. Away. Incoming freshman. switch-now. She is a horrid teacher and is worse for 208 than 207 if that is imaginable.
I don't understand what everyone is complaining about. This course is designed for science majors with an interest in the subject. Lenky is a great professor with a huge personal interest in biology and traveling which makes lectures more interesting. I never opened the book and still got an A. Go to class though, she gives clickers.
Dr. Alenka was a great professor! I thought her lectures were interesting and they kept me awake. She is always willing to help and going to her office hours will definitely help you. The exams were tough and reading the text was important. I learned a ton and I'm glad I took 208 with her.
Don't listen to the negative comments! Prof. Alenka was one of my favorite professors this semester. Her exams are very challenging, but she just expects you to know the material very well... not just learn the terms. You do need to study a lot, but you will learn so much. She is SO helpful during office hours! Try hard and you'll be fine! :)
Alenka is a great professor. I did not do as well as I wanted to my first test, after that though, I balled.
Alenka is quite a difficult teacher to have. She doesn't e-mail back and a lot of individual studying must be done in order to do well. Her power points are also non helpful. She was very dry and boring.
NOT an easy A by any means. READ the text book and put in the effort and you will do well. She is so helpful if you go to her and although she does't curve, you will get the grade that you deserve and you will learn so much to help you with all of the other sciences that you have. You will do terrible on the first exam but it will get better!
Very interesting and enthusiastic teacher who make you know the information very well. She is very nice, but the only knock against her is that her tests are hard. However our grades have many other components so they aren't your only grades that matter
Difficult class but very rewarding when you put in the timeeffort. Lab is 25% of grade so major booster. Prof Alenka is a very nice woman and a pleasure to learn from. You will have to read and attend class regularly. Interesting material. Most difficult aspect is tests but theyre not impossible. Would take again wher. Go to office hours!
She's a super sweet lady. She has an accent, but it's not hard to understand! Her first exam, everyone failed miserably but for the last 2, the grades improved dramatically so don't let it scare you off. A lot of her exam questions come from the textbook, so make sure you read the chapters.
Awesome professor, very interested in her work. Exams are tough, be prepared to study. You'll get used to her format and can do well.
Great lectures and willing to help any and all students who ask. Tests are very difficult, so you're gonna have to read and study to do well. She has an accent, but it rarely gets in the way.
I had Alenka for both Bio 207 and bio 208. Most people think she's tough but I was able to obtain an A both semesters. She's not easy, but I did actually learn a lot. It takes a little while to get kind of used to her accent, though it's not that strong. If you work hard you can get a good grade.
Alenka is one of the most sweetest people you will meet. Unfortunately, her exams are hard. The powerpoints that she uses don't really have notes on them. Her lectures aren't always relevant and sometimes it sounds like she goes off on tangents. Luckily she has a curve at the end of the course that helped a lot of people.
Alenka did not teach. Her lectures were long and boring and did not tell much for the test. The ONLY way i could do well on the tests was reading everything and teaching myself. She is a nice lady who is willing to help if you ask, but a terrible teacher. Also, she HATES phones so do not get caught on your phone in her class. She'll snap.
I took integrated BISC/CHEM. She is terrible. The lectures are long and boring. There is no structure to this class. The exams are hard as anything. Even if you read the book, it doesn't matter. It's been 2 1/2 months into this class, and I haven't figured it out. I have accepted failure. Do not take this class. Your life will be over.
Alenka is a subpar professor. Her lectures are not helpful and if you ask her questions, you'll get a rambling answer. You'll pretty much be teaching yourself. Her exams are hard, but averages go up after the first one. I took integrated Chem 103/Bisc 207, which was awful and should be avoided. Don't do it to yourself.
I took Integrated BISC/CHEM and enjoyed it. This was my hardest class. Prof. Alenka goes over the material and it made sense to me, but those tests are hard! I thought the topics were fascinating, so that may have helped, but you WILL need to pay attention & study to even get a C. ASK questions if you don't understand, and KNOW the material.
Prof Alenka is a very nice woman, but essentially an awful professor. She has a hard time making material understandable for students. Even when you think you know it, the tests are so unpredictable. Integrated honors is a really hard class, but coming from someone who barely had any experience in science in high school, you will survive!
This is the most confusing class I've ever taken I my life. I can honestly say the material on her exams is completely out of nowhere. Study the entire text book and her 1000 pages of slides and her worksheets and you may have some semblance of an Idea what is going on in her class. GO TO CLASS GO TO CLASS GO TO CLASS
Prof. Alenka is a good professor. Although she can be very confusing to follow during her lectures, she is always available during her office hours to help you. She gives three exams throughout the semester, all 20 multiple choice and 5 open ended. If you show effort and participate in class, it will help your grade tremendously.
If you can avoid integrated bio/chem, do so. If you can avoid honors integrated, definitely do so. Alenka is a sweet, funny woman, but her class is tough. Her exams are all in the same format, but her non-native speech really makes comprehending her tests difficult, and therefore even harder to answer correctly. DO NOT TAKE INTEGRATED
Alenka may be sweet but her tests and lectures are hard and confusing. Her tests are not proofread by any native english speakers either. Half of the time I was trying to translate her questions to english. Even if you study and read the book, you will not do very well. THIS IS INTEGRATED BTW. Don't take it if you can avoid it. It kills your GPA.
Not quite sure how I feel about the teaching style for this class. Daily clicker quizzes and verbally asking conceptual questions to lead the class to the correct conclusion was very effective in understanding but it felt like a coddled high school class. Very involved in lab as well as lecture, cares about students' success if they put in effort
Her accent is pretty heavy, but not too bad compared to most teachers here, so it can be hard to understand but she walks you through the concepts. She really helps people out in 1 on 1 sessions or during lectures. If you participate in class a lot she really takes notice of you and will help you out. She really curves tests and the final grade.
She is extremely smart, but she doesn't always express the information clearly which could be frustrating. Also, her tests are HARD. I wouldn't recommend the integrated section of this course.
I have never hated a class more. I took AP Biology and that helped me a little bit. I have never felt so stupid in a class. It came to the point that I did not want to go to class, since barely anything from the lectures are on the exams. This class made me re-evaluate my life. I wanted to drop out of school everyday. Rest in peace to my GPA.
I took Honors Integrated BISC207 and CHEM103 with Alenka and Fajardo and it was hell. To succeed, you have to read the book and understand the material before class. She asks difficult, lofty, process questions. Exams frequently had confusing grammatical errors. Several people started going to counseling due to the pressure.
Alenka is really nice but I got nothing out of her lectures. Her exams are very conceptual and I felt that there was material on the exams that she never discussed in class. You really have to read the textbook to keep up. Showing up to her office hours is a really good idea. Her accent isn't too hard to understand but her grammar is a little bad.
SO HARD. She made BISC207 so much more difficult than it had to be. Her lectures had absolutely no structure. She's obviously a very intelligent woman, but almost too smart to teach. I highly recommend to get the class with another professor.
I really liked her as a person because she is so sweet. She is smart too and she will help you to understand the concepts and help you a lot if you make an effort to find her during office hour. However, the lectures and especially the exams are hard as hell. Some of the questions were on something that we never went over in the lecture.
Exams and labs make up almost your entire grade. Exams are extremely difficult and questions are often vague but don't be afraid to ask for clarification. Final was difficult but the review sessions are helpful and the final replaces your lowest exam grade. During lectures she'll expect that you know the basics so read beforehand.
She often talks about topics that are completely unrelated to the course in lectures. Her exams often have topics that were never covered. The questions typically have many grammar issues and are difficult to understand because of this. She doesn't allow you ask questions which makes deciphering the correct answer very difficult.
She's kind and obviously cares about her students, but unless you have a solid foundation in biology, it's impossible to get an A in this class. Do not take unless you're excellent in biology and got a 5 on the AP test and are willing to undertake the challenge.
Honestly she wasn't that bad. Her tests can be tricky, but if you go to office hours and specifically ask about things you are confused about, she will help you. She cares about her students, but will get frustrated if you think you don't care about her class. If you take her class seriously, you're going to be fine.
Alenka is a great professor, but I probably would've appreciated her more having her second semester instead. She will go the nine yards for you, but ONLY IF you put in the effort first. I went to office hours every week after realizing how much they really help. Almost everyone fails the first exam, but it gets better. Read the textbook.
Her exams were ridiculous and unlike any other bio teachers for that course.
You can tell that Alenka really cares about her students, however, her grammar isn't great, and there is no proofreading on the exams and quizzes. There are often spelling and grammar mistakes, which you can't ask questions about, and concepts that weren't covered in classes or labs, and exams weigh heavily on your grade. She rarely updates canvas.
You could have spent a semester doing an independent study on introductory Biology and probably have had a better experience than this sorry excuse for a class. Don't fall for the "only the last quiz matters" ploy. If you do bad on a quiz you now have two quizzes to prepare for because everything is cumulative. I used to love Biology before Alenka.
Successful relationships in all walks of life require clear expectations. I am taking the final exam in two hours, and no matter how well I do I will forever despise Alenka for inducing this much stress in her students. Not because of difficult material, but because of unclear expectations. Her knowledge is too all encompassing for her own good.
I feel angry about this class. I feel frustrated about the lack of organization and expectations. I feel demoralized about having no real control of my grade. Most of all I feel thankful that it is over.
Alenka is a very intelligent person and you can tell she cares about her students. However, this class was extremely difficult. Expectations were not clear and we had quizzes every Friday that people failed consistantly. She expects you to apply knowledge at a very high level.
She is hard, I'm not denying this at all. She expects you to have deeper understanding of Biology. The material she covers is mostly stuff you already know if you've taken AP Biology or Biology. But she expects you to make connections. Quizzes and tests are difficult, but not impossible. Her office hours are packed so come during off hours
I like Alenka a lot, she inspired me at office hours and taught me to be self reliant. That being said, shes far from easy. You have to understand the material in a comprehensive way in order to even stand a chance with her quizzes. Office hours are a must, come with your own questions. Very nice woman but very no-nonsense so shes intimidating.
Does not do a great job of explaining material in class so going to office hours is very important. Weekly quizzes were absolute killers. If you did not take AP Bio this class will be very difficult as she expects you to already have a strong foundation of biology. Tests and quizzes are mostly, if not all, real life applicaitons.
This class was so hard. You could tell that she knows what she's talking about, but she is unwilling to share. She runs her class by asking you questions. However, no one knows the answers because she does not use a textbook. I have no idea where she gets her lessons from. Her slides don't help. Weekly quizzes are brutal. Avoid taking her class.
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She gave me a D+ when she didn't have all of our work graded, only the exams. I had to email her 3 times before she finally responded and she still hasn't fixed my grade. Her tests are impossible to pass, tests you on things that you have no way of knowing and then argues with you when you call her out on it. Just awful.
Class is extremely difficult if you do not have extensive background knowledge of bio. Alenka is a nice lady, but very hard to understand & her assessments are extremely challenging. Even after changing my study methods & attending office hours, I still did not improve my grade that much. Would not recommend for some with little bio experience
She is a nice lady but she teaches more chem than bio and her exams are comprehensive and she doesn't really teach the material presented on the exams.
She's is very knowledgeable about biology, but expects a lot of you. Office hours are a must if you want to do well. Most people don't use the textbook that costs money since there is a free version online.
If you get put into her class and there is no way to switch out then switch your major. It may seem drastic but trust me, switch your major. Nice lady, Horrible teacher.
Overall awful professor, lectures are not helpful, progressive quizzes are killer. Office hours are extremely crowded, she often incorporates info from the office hours on quizzes. Grammatically challenging questions bc English is second lang. She relies heavily on prior knowledge of AP Bio, if you did not take it will be extremely difficult.
You can tell she is very interested in her subject, however her teaching style is very hard to learn from. She relies on question and answer based lectures, and becomes angry saying, "how disappointed she is" when no one in the class can correctly answer her question. The progressive quizzes are very difficult and have a large impact on your grade.
Alenka made BISC207 so much harder than it had to be. We had little to no resources for quizzes/exams because she didn't use a textbook and gave very little homework assignments (homework would've been helpful for such a difficult class). She called randomly on kids which made everyone more nervous. Final exam was super difficult.
She's a lovely woman, terrible teacher. Office hours are a must if you want to attempt to try and read her mind. In order to pass you need to: 1. learn to read half english 2. learn to read her mind 3. Know everything ever 4. attempt to understand her lectures. Overall lovely woman, terrible teacher.
There is a difference between giving the class information, and actually teaching it. Alenka does not know the difference. Nice lady, worst professor I've ever had. Only benefit of taking her class is that any classes you take afterwards cannot be nearly as worse as this one. Make all sacrifices possible to avoid her class.
The progressive quizzes were very unorganized, and sometimes she wouldn't even have the correct answer as an option or she would tell us the wrong answer. This happened frequently when we went over dilutions and calibration. Same thing on the exams, some questions did not make any sense, or did not have a correct answer. Do not take this professor.
I took both 207 and 208 Honors Integrated. Compared to 207, this course was definitely easier to understand Alenka's expectations of the students. Progressive quizzes every week, you end up relying on the last few in a series. Alenka shows that she truly cares about the students who continue in integrated for another semester through encouragement.
This class was one of the hardest I've ever taken. Progressive quizzes every week that are extremely hard and test on tiny facts that are lost in the power points. Exams and lab are difficult. Didn't know what my grade was all semester because there was nothing on canvas until finals week. Curves and is very helpful in office hours - definitely go.
Worst professor by far. She expects way the students to know more than they actually do and expect you to just read her mind. The lectures are barely lectures you just have to hope that you get good notes from her talking. There are progressive quizzes every week on things that were never learned. The Exams are super hard. Stay away from her class.
This class was mostly a review of AP Biology; if you have a solid background in bio, don't worry! A lot of people struggle, but it's because they are used to being spoonfed all the information or just mindlessly copying slides. Pay attention in lecture and you will be fine! Practice and use office hours to understand the material inside and out.
Here's the thing. People always hate on alenka saying that shes bad and dosen't know how to teach but she is the sweetest and most understanding lady ever. She was the most helpful person ever in . Her tests aren't bad if you prepare a few days in advance. Go to office hours shes amazing. She will give you extra points. Take her class.
easy class for me, shes pretty good. Helpful in office hours. Pretty easy class for the bisc department compared to other classes.
Nice person and understanding sometimes. To succeed in this class you definitely have to put in so much work especially if you don't have an AP bio background. I actually found her lectures interesting and helpful, but you need to do your own research to understand the more in-depth details of the topics. You have to go to office hours.
The worst prof I have had at UD. The only way you can do well in this course is if you regularly go to her office hours. She forgets to put the right answer in the multiple choice options on exams and quizzes and teaches the math differently than you learn in lab. You have to be able to read her mind and understand her awful grammar to pass.
Alenka is an amazing prof, I never took AP Bio and was able to get an A. Office hours are a necessity and will be highly efficient study time. Active learning is key and pay close attention to her canvas page and work to understand any worksheets that she posts. She may be intimidating at first, but form a connection with her and ask lots of ?'s.
Alenka certainly makes you work for it. In order to do well in this class, it is necessary to put several hours aside and work through biological concepts on your own, outside of class. Alenka was extremely helpful in office hours- certainly better than lecture. Towards the end of the semester, I finally learned how to read her mind. Genuine woman.
Youll learn so much but you absolutely have to work for this class. Doesnt have a textbook so hard to study, but be sure to know everything about everything she has mentioned. Must attend lecture to do okay in the class.
I don't think Alenka's exams are as bad as everybody says.. you just have to pay attention to which concepts she stresses in lecture. Her class stresses concepts over content, so don't waste time memorizing random things she doesn't talk about in class. She's very kind & helpful, but it is true some of her quiz questions are difficult to understand
listen. do not take the class. don't take integrated if you don't have to. don't take her for microbio just take prof cooper. its not a joke, don't risk your gpa. progressive quizzes are not good. tests have very badly worded questions. ALenka is a good human being. just not a great professor. The only benefit of integrated is the lab experience.
Take any other biology professor! Alenka is a very nice person but does not know how to teach an undergraduate class. Her exam and quiz questions are very confusing and if you do not attend the lecture you will not understand them at all.
Many people dislike Professor Alenka, and sometimes it is for a fair reason. Her classes are certainly not easy, and frankly extremely difficult. But she is the most caring person you'll meet and if you just pay attention in lecture and attend office hours and work and talk through things with her, you'll do just fine. Overall an amazing person.
Prof Alenka is a nice person but not a good teacher. Progressive quizzes are very poorly worded throughout semester. This semester we still don't know our grades by finals week. No textbook, confusing lectures and grades mainly depend on exams. Take any other prof
There is no way you will take this class and enjoy it- especially if you havent taken AP Bio. The "progressive quizzes" will hurt your grade and you do not learn many of the questions on them. They are meant to be difficult, not to help your grade. The powerpoints do not have notes, so you have to write down what she says. I was happy I passed.
Prof. Alenka is a very sweet and caring person but should not be teaching intro to biology. The pace of her grading and responding to emails was insanely slow. Get ready to teach yourself just about everything, and if you can't make her normal office hours or have a background in general chemistry you're done. So unnecessarily stressful.
Literally worst professor Ive ever had. Does not have a proper teaching method that is successful (obviously refuses to change that) majority of the class has no idea whats going on. Youd think if your students are struggling you would find a way to change the way you teach the subject.
She makes THE WORST exams I have ever seen. She often has multiple correct answers, horrible wording, or just wrong information. She is very boring and teaches at a middle school level. My class is SOOOOO behind the other 207 classes and I am terrified. This was a repeat of 9th grade honors biology.
Her "lectures" are made up of blank slides and going around the room handing students her ipad to fill information in. Small quiz every week, 2exams, & final. Even with a tutor i'm probably going to have to retake the lecture because she takes FOREVER to put grades in, exam 1 from FEBRUARY is still not graded. No idea of what my grade is.
I've found that where her in-person lectures can be unusually challenging and even intimidating for an introductory biology course, personally I believe she excels in online teaching. She cares about making sure that you understand the concepts, even if it isn't downright apparent. The quizzes can be vague at times, but I've seen worse.
I had a horrible time in this class. Her tests are always super confusing and there are ALWAYS errors on the answer key. Every single quiz or test had the wrong answer key so correct answers were marked wrong which was very discouraging. Her lectures are really confusing and she puts almost nothing on her slides. Lab is pretty easy.
took this class 2 yrs ago. i still think its the hardest bio class. she trains u to be a better thinker. i studied 3-4 hours every day for this class alone and learned so much from her. now that i am studying for the mcat, i can sift thru a lot of info analytically bc of her teaching. she is a hard prof but experience is worth it if u work for sure
Professor Alenka is very nice and knowledgeable about biology, but she isn't the best lecturer. It's super easy to get bored and uninterested. And honestly, the way the class is set up is partially to blame. I don't recommend taking integrated bio/chem. Pay attention, ask questions, and study, and you should get at least a B.
Do not take any class by this teacher because on every test and quiz taken there were 2-5 questions where she put the wrong answer and when you try to contact her about it she ignores you. She is always behind on grades and just talks at you in lecture. She provide no notes/slides with information that is helpful & constantly contradicts herself
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! UD freshmen-request non-honors integrated or separate bio/chem. Lectures are boring and you learn nothing from her slides. Alenka's tests are awful and she doesn't give partial credit. Exams don't even have the information we "learned" in class. Even with open-note tests b/c of online format, tests and quizzes are total luck.
Don't get me wrong, Alenka is a nice teacher who cares about her students. However, this class is hell, and I would not recommend it to anyone. Tests are very hard and going to lecture barely helps. DO NOT TAKE INTEGRATED BIOCHEM!!! If the 3 hour lectures don't drain your sanity, the 3 hour labs surely will. If you take this online, its even worse
Her lecture slides are very basic and she expects you to write down most of what she says. She rarely will go back if you have a question and overall was a very nice person or a good professor.
While a very difficult class, professor Alenka cares so much for her students to succeed and teaches many valuable skills for life in general and future studies. Just go to office hours and study/practice as much as possible (use concept maps!!) and you will do fine.
Please spare yourself the stress, and do not take this course. Alenka structures her class in a way that almost seems impossible to do well in. The exams and quizzes always have errors in the answer key, the questions are confusing, written in broken English, and will make you want to pull your hair out. Alenkas class is unnecessarily stressful.
Professor Alenka was very difficult and her tests did not align with what was learned during class. She did not have sympathy for her students and rarely listened to problems that students had with grading etc. She was hard to understand and her lecture slides were mostly pictures with no words. I do not recommend taking this course with her.
Her class is hard. There is no way around it. But, if you really work hard you can succeed. Focus on concepts rather than small details. She is a really nice professor and will write you great letters if you work hard.
Professor Alenka is a very sweet person and she is willing to work with you if you show effort. Often, you are unclear about what you are supposed to be learning from her lectures because they often feel jumbled. As long as you put effort into her class and go to office hours, you will be ok.
Alenka's lectures do not make sense and are very unorganized. She also never has a finished key before a test and her questions don't make sense. Even if you go to a lecture it's impossible to pay attention and she just talks about random plants and animals and does not have clear course objectives. DON'T TAKE HONORS INTEGRATED
Could not understand a word she said. Always digressed into discussions about miscellaneous animals. Exams were a huge part of your grade, there were only three of them (including the final) and the average was NEVER better than a 65. 0/10 would not recommend.
The benefit of taking an Alenka class become clear after a year or so. Speaking from experience, I took this course a few years back. Alenkas class is challenging but forced me to really understand concepts and science as a whole. The minor things arent as important as the fact that she teaches you how to think. Not easy, but definitely worth it
Very difficult professor with even more difficult exams. Very difficult to understand her. I did take the honors section of her class, but her class was by far the hardest class my freshman year.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had. Do not take class with this lady. She is awful.
Awful professor. TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR. Her exam questions make no sense, her pre/post unit quiz questions aren't even English, Her teaching style is terrible. She expected us to be molecular biologists before we started the course. First half of the course felt like I was taking organic chemistry rather than an Intro to bio course. RIP.
worst class I've ever taken. had to switch majors because she ruined bio for me. Professor Alenka will give quizzes where she won't even know the right answer and we had to email her to change our grades. Her lectures are very boring and her tests make little to no sense. The class felt fake.
Very sweet woman, but the class is extremely difficult for an intro level course. Average on every exam was in the 50's. Save yourself a ton of time and stress and take another professor if possible
The teaching style in this class was incredibly inefficient, I found it rare if I actually learned something in class. For exams I would have to watch videos and teach the material to myself. Professor Alenka didn't consider her students or have sympathy even if you were trying your best.
This class was unnecessarily difficult for an intro level class. Her test/quiz questions made little to no sense, which caused a lot of students to do poorly. If you prioritize your gpa, don't take this class.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. Test averages were always around a 50 and the questions made no sense. I had to audit this course and ended up switching my major partly due to this class. If you have the option, do not take this with her.
Prof. Alenka means well and she really wants you to learn how to learn. But wow. This is an insane intro to biology course. Everyone I talked to hated this class and was struggling as well. Expect all your time to be put towards studying for this class. Exam averages were abysmal and your GPA will be too. Try to avoid like the plague.
Worst professor I've ever had. There was a ton of gaps in her teaching. Her exam questions were unrelated to lecture. You need to do to ur own research to even begin to understand her. She doesn't provide enough resources. Our average exam scores were the lowest I've ever seen. I swear I'm genuinely smart & I still couldn't figure this class out
i had her for honors integrated bisc 207, she was HARD. i didnt really do this semester so my grade received was well earned. i will say when i reached out to her, rather she reached out to me, it was very helpful. had i taken her advice i probably couldve saved the semester but oh well. GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND ASK QUESTIONS, get her to know you.
I was in the Honors integrated class, and having taken AP Bio in highschool, this class was not extremely challenging like other reviews suggest. I really enjoyed her lecture style, and nearly all content on the exams is right from lecture/ lecture worksheets. But because of the labs, I would not recommend taking this class, they were AWFUL.
Prof. Alenka is the type of teacher that blames her students that the exam averages are terrible, and does not possibly consider it could be her fault. Her class also did not prepare me for BISC208; my 208 professor keeps referring to things we "should have learned in 207" that Alenka did not talk about. The labs were good though.
The class content wasn't terrible, but her exams are AWFUL. They dont relate to the things learned in class and often they will just be wrong and she makes you explain why you should get credit for putting the right answer when you ask about it. She also would be mad at us in lecture for not giving the answer she wanted and it was very frustrating.
Professor Alenka is a lovely woman, and having taken her Microbiology class, I can say, if you enjoy microbiology you will do well. However, if you are only taking as a GPA booster, avoid this class. The exams are difficult, and many questions have technicalities. She wants you to do well, but teaches at a higher level than I would assign a 200-300
Prof. Alenka is not a bad professor but her exams can be difficult. She likes an interactive classroom and is very willing to walk you through your thinking strategies and questions you may have. You can tell she is very passionate about what she does. If you like microbio I would suggest taking her class.
If you want to do well in Alenka's class, attend the lectures and participate. She gets a bad rap but she really does try to help the students who put in effort. Her questions are definitely not the easiest to understand, but if you give her reasoning she will usually give you points back. There wasn't a ton of outside work and exams were open note
Professor Alenka is one of my favorite professors at this school. Not only is she kind and thoughtful towards her students, she is also very engaging as a professor. She presents information in a way that is easy to comprehend. She will instill a greater appreciation for biology or chemistry if that is the route you want to go.
Professor Alenka was not a bad professor, but she had very difficult lectures to understand, and her exams were also very difficult AND difficult to understand. In order to do well in this class you need to put in the work on your own. Read the textbook, go to office hours, or potentially get a tutor because you will need one!
Professor Alenka is such a sweet person outside of class, although probably shouldn't be a professor. Her lectures are tremendously scrambled and the exams don't match up with anything you do in lecture. She isn't very responsive in emails so go to office hours if you want to attempt to get some help.
Prof. Alenka is not very clear in lecture, to the point where I stopped going to lecture. She can have an attitude at times, and you will have to teach yourself from the textbook and SimBio. All of the exams I took for her were open-note, however, so that is nice. Her assignments will pop up randomly and she does not remind students.
Overall, Professor Alenka was a great person, but her lectures oftentimes did not match up to the exams. I personally really struggled with her style of teaching because she doesn't have clear notes you need to take in class. Attendance is not mandatory for lecture, but good luck if you don't go (and use outside resources).
This by far has been the hardest class. Lecture was very hard for no reason, feels like it's her life's destiny to make your life harder. Went to her help hours which was more helpful than the actual lecture but that's only once a week. Her pre/post-unit quizzes are very hard and you can only imagine what the exams were like. Don't Take her section
She fails to actually teach during lectures and is very inconsistent with putting up grades/assignments. The material she teaches and the course in general is considered to be very challenging for an introductory course. Overall, I hope students do not pick this course if they wish to save their GPA.
Outside of class, she seems like a caring person, but this is just considered very challenging for an introductory course. The lectures are very broad and confusing so it's up to you to learn the material on your own time. The lab, however, is an easier and more enjoyable experience but personally, I would not recommend taking this course overall.
This professor is very kind and cares about students. Her lectures are unorganized and she mostly talks though out them instead of having concrete notes. Her office hours range from very helpful to off topic. She gives of pre/post unit quizzes, but they are very hard and conceptual, often timed. This course is a struggle and depends on the student
This Professor is the worst. She deters participation in class. Appears nice at first but is genuinely an asshole. Very tough grader and an inability to teach.
Every student struggles. Earning a low D on any assignment was a victory because the class average was always low. The tests are created to trick students. The structure of the class has good intentions but bad execution. She is nice but can not stay on topic leading to assignments unfinished and overall class confusion.
Inconsistency defines this class. Her assessments are not clear, have unclear answers and often wrong answers. I've gotten too tired and stopped disputing the incorrect responses by now. Idk how well she teaches if you did not take AP Bio because it is a different teaching style. At least exams are open note.
Was in Honors Integrated Bio & Chem course and it brought me to the brink. GPA tanked because of these courses. Almost no guides with labs. You need to read the textbook to understand lecture and go to lecture to understand the textbook and, oh yeah, you probably should have taken AP Bio in HS as well. Honors College wants you to take it. DON'T.
Had a friend who didn't do too hot on an exam and got this comment "I hope you find the strength to get more engaged in lectures. Being hidden on the side by the wall does not help you. You have the intellectual potential to do well in the class. Are you working on your time management?" She was a very dedicated student with great time management
This was a very difficult class. I have been a straight A student growing up, good with time management and stay on top of my work and I was furious with Professor Alenka. Her exams are very challenging and most people fail. With people failing, she still does not curve. You have to get a good grade in lab in order to be successful with Alenka. UGH
Extremely educated but over estimates her students depth of understanding on the subjects she teaches. Defiantly pay attention to the SimBio homeworks and the random IRL examples to concepts she brings un in class because it will show up on the exam.
Professor Alenka was a terrible teacher. Her exams are very confusing and her lectures are as well. I am not entirely sure what has to be done in order to fire a teacher such as herself, but action should be taken. This class is nearly impossible to study for and I would not recommend taking it unless you are extremely intelligent.
Most of the class is failing and Professor Alenka does not care. In fact, she gets frustrated when students are confused and asks questions. Even if you took AP Bio you will most likely fail. I had a tutor, studied hard, and had great time management but none of the hard work paid off with her class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS This women is on my hate list. She messes up every single exam you will take and you have to argue with her about the correct answers. Her lectures are a literal joke. She spent an entire lecture reprimanding us on why we should wear a mask. She also likes to scream at you at 8am and blame her horrible teaching on you.
Alenka is very knowledgeable in her field of study but is a very tough professor. Exams are almost impossible to get above a B. She gets irritated easily when students can't grasp concepts. If you have her make sure you check all of the answer keys because she makes mistakes on them easily and it costs you many points. .
So sorry to all first semester freshman who had no choice. She as a textbook available but not even worth it. Messes up answer key ON THE EXAM. open note but still have to study. yells at class for not trying. gets very off topic. attendance optional but highly recommend going because slides are very broad so you have to listen. everyone is failing
I took both semesters of Honors Integrated Biology and Chemistry with her and she said this to me after I answered two questions wrong in a row in front of the class: "You are going to give me a heart attack. Please don't raise your hand for the rest of class."
She is one of the hardest professors I've taken yet. Her material is not clear, she tests you on things that were not clearly gone over and most of her tests are not proof read at all and she has to be corrected by students on multiple occasions. Do yourself a favor and take another professor
She is very nice as a person however as a professor not so much. Grading is very weird on canvas so you don't know what you have. Exams are worded poorly as well as lectures. Often will go on tangents unrelated to the subject. Try to take with different professor. Like her as a person, not a professor.
The worst teacher I have ever had. She does not go over material in a clear way and still expects you to know each topic in depth, greatly overestimating the knowledge of any student. I took AP biology and am still unsure that I will pass this class. I recommend her to no one and am extremely upset that I am forced to take BISC208 with her as well.
If you care about your GPA...DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS WOMAN. She never fully explains what she is trying to teach and then when she asks questions to the class and student will answer, then she will just say correct and not repeat the answer so know one knows what the answer was. She rambles on about info that is not important. STAY AWAY.
Stay away. Assignments and assessments are confusing and the answer keys are usually wrong. Alenka is a nice person but sometimes just doesn't respond to emails. The first two exams had a lot of extra points added but nothing extra for the final worth 30% of the grade. Would not take again.
This was the worst teaching experience I have ever encountered. This professor is very knowledgeable but she gets sidetracked like no other. She doesn't understand how to work Canvas or stay on track. If you want to succeed in this class you are going to have to do well in Bio Lab and put the effort in outside of class.
I actually think shes partially illiterate. The subject material is pretty easy, but she writes the exam questions herself and it has become clear that english is not her first language. Not only are the quiz and exam questions difficult to decipher, but she will literally mark the correct questions wrong She has also never once answered my emails.
Although she is a very knowledgeable teacher, Professor Alenka is a tough professor to deal with. The class is expected to have AP Biology level prior knowledge of the subject. Her exams and post-unit quizzes are confusing mostly due to grammatical mistakes, and lectures do not help. She is also not the most approachable person.
Most of the reviews here are accurate, but the class is valuable IF you dedicate yourself and study hard. She also gave 5-15 extra credit pts for each exam, via reflection assignments. The Simbio is VITAL to learning everything, TAKE NOTES on it. Making friends in class is key. DON'T take this class just bc your advisor said so, it isn't that easy
Alenka is a very nice person, and truly cares about her students. However, her ways of conveying this are very convoluted. In this class, you're expected to have previous knowledge from AP Bio and if this isn't the case for you, than the class will be very rough. Rather than teaching, she just reviews complex topics as if we already know the topic
While she is somewhat understanding, Professor Alenka expects you to fully understand the ins and outs of the material before you even enter the classroom. I would not take this class unless you are fully knowledgeable of every biological process and its intricate details. This is not some class that you take to fill a breathe requirement.
Not approachable at all, cold calls students she knew didnt understand the material just to embarrass them. Her exams are very hard and have a ton of grammatical errors. Expects you to have prior knowledge, and her lecture slides that are posted are mostly blank so you can't look back on it. Attend all the lectures, honestly don't take her class.
I have never devoted so much time and energy to a class only to receive nearly zero payoff. Every day that I went to this class I left feeling 10x more confused than I did when I walked in. She's very educated, but made the simplest content feel impossible. Everyone did so poorly on exams that they were ridiculously curved, and we still struggled.
Do not take this class. I took AP Bio in high school and finished with an A, but was failing this class for half of the semester. She does not respond to emails, and is little to no help in resolving issues if you approach her in person. She was also just mean lol and was not great at lecturing. Her exams were also very very difficult.
I had to teach myself everything I learned in this course. This professor's lectures were pointless. I, and so many of my peers, had no idea what was going on in lecture and the slides didn't help at all. No matter how much information I taught myself, her tests were impossible. Take this class with a different professor!!!
I had her for 207+208. 208 was much easier in terms of knowing what to expect and you learn to pass the professor, not the course. Doing well in lab is SO important because it can bring your grade up. Doing good on the review exam will replace lowest test grade, and she reuses so many questions, make "notes" of every single assignment.
The worst professor I have ever had at the University of Delaware. She is a nice woman, but an awful teacher. Her slides have maybe 5 words on them and the content she goes over in class is almost never relevant to the exams. She does not have steady office hours and never replies to emails. Her exams are INSANE almost everyone fails & no curves.
She was not a very good teacher, often made simple topics 100x more complicated then they should be. This made her assignments and exams all the more confusing. She also asks for criticism but never takes it, and then projects her poor teaching onto her students.
Be prepared to use all your resources, and don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how dumb she makes you seem. Exam-heavy and need to study extremely outside of lecture to understand concepts, essentially doesn't teach you and expects you to have prior knowledge on all topics. It's hard, but worth it b/c of the work ethic you end up developing
Alenka is here for a check at the end of the day. Her classes are confusing, and good luck sticking to one textbook. Her test questions are not clear and poorly written, although she gives you a reflection to get some points back, hopefully, but don't count on it. If you have her, good luck, because you're on your own for this course.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She makes very simple biology topics extremely complicated and hard to understand. Her tests were impossible, and it was really hard to get above a B on any test. The test material had nothing to do with her lectures and the class was very disorganized as a whole. DON'T TAKE HER!!
Tough class, but worth the effort. Alenka expects a lot of prior knowledge, so be prepared to put in extra study time using all available resources, including unstuckstudy. Attendance is key, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Best teacher for grades, it's actually free. Read textbook
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Take anyone but her. If you want a proper sem with good grades take someone else. She literally bullies her students and laughs in their faces and her slides have practically NOTHING on it. Her exams are worded horribly.
Her class is determined by a few very hard tests that you don't get any preparation for such as a study guide. Her slides don't give any information so if you miss something she says then you won't know it you have to teach yourself for this class if you can take another professor
The slides used for lectures are pretty much blank with maybe 1 picture/diagram. There are no resources like study guides or reviews to prepare for upcoming exams. Lots of in class lecture assignments and if you miss class, you start to lose lots of points. Says she cares about us doing well, but most people do poorly the entire semester.
Her slideshows are pretty much blank except for like one picture so it is really hard to understand and then to study. She doesn't teach at all she just skims over topics and expects you to already know everything. Tests are also very hard. Would not recommend taking her class.
Had Alenka for the biology part of HiBC. Her slides are practically blank, so make sure you take lots of notes during lecture of what she is saying. Exams are pretty hard with the wording of questions/answer choices, but she does give points back for heavily-missed questions which is nice. Just be respectful to her and she will be respectful back.
Lecture slides contained little to no material. Tests didn't match quiz questions or lecture material. A very lovely person to talk to and she did answer questions, however when it came to actual material the tests were very confusing
It took everything out of me to get a C- in this course. Alenka drained my life and everyone else's. I took 3 exams, one being the final(cumulative) and these weigh your grade heavily. Her exams are highly unfair with limited time being a written, paper portion and then a portion on canvas with multiple choice. Do not take her if at all possible.
The class is super lecture heavy and the slides are practically blank. If you aren't listening for the entire lecture, you will miss the most niche detail that will surely have like 10 questions on the exam. Exam questions are absolutely ridiculous and no matter how much you study, you will never get the grade you want. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
There is no reason why I should have to go back to my dorm and teach myself all the content I was supposed to have learned during lecture because the professor is awful and unclear.
Professor Alenka cares about her students and has a funny sense of dry humor that makes classes more amusing. However, her lectures are scattered and I find that the points she makes are hard to connect back to the topic. But she is great with communication; she will help you in office hours and set up 1-1 meetings to work with you. Good luck.
Lot of pros and cons. Pros - I thought that Alenka's lectures were pretty good, the SimBio app that we use for notes is very effective (make sure you take exhaustive notes). Cons - tests were really confusing (paper part is always really hard and she gives you no time for it, canvas portion is easy) and didn't correspond well to lectures.
I did not learn anything in this class what so ever. Lecture was an absolute waste of time and she would give us graded lecture assignments about subjects we didn't even cover yet. You have to learn everything outside of class but the textbook is the worst thing ever. The only thing that saved me was the exam reviews where you could get point back.
Wording of questions on homework/exams deliberately confusing. Slides are random, complex pictures (she loves her visuals). Tutoring was the only reason I passed, SimBio teaches way better than her. Was afraid to participate in lecture, where I didn't learn very much. Very hard final. She is very smart, but teaching isn't right for her.
Nice lady, but did not provide material to study from which made preparing for exams very difficult
She's certainly well educated in the subject, however, her method of teaching is just as unique as her background. Her slides are incredibly vague, which is why you'll need to pay attention in every single lecture (unless you've taken AP Bio). Her test questions are confusing and she doesn't change them. Good luck.
Although I got an A in the class, professor alenka's lectures were very difficult and had to pay attention to every detail. The SIMBIO and exam reflections saved my grade, as I had to teach myself outside of class to really get a good understanding of what was happening. She is not horrible, just wouldn't recommend.
Literally save yourself. She did not want us to succeed
You def have to study but i don't think she was as bad as these reviews. The assignments were frustrating because they were timed but she's very helpful and nice if she knows you care.
Her slides are empty and unorganized. Be ready to teach yourself all of the content outside of class, as she goes on long tangents that don't have anything to do with the content. Somehow the textbook was more helpful than the lectures. Don't take her class if you like life.
Worst class I have ever taken. This class has made me want to change my major. Alenka has lowered my confidence tremoundlsy. I studied, went to tutoring, etc and still had a D in the class. The written exams make NO sense at all. I ended up auditing the class before it messed up my GPA. Stay away from this class if you want a good bio experience.
in all seriousness, DO NOT TAKE HER. she is boring, hard to understand, just genuinely must hate kids. She gives long lecture assignments that are hard and timed and her exams are hard for no reason and she does not give partial credit at all. She literally has said to just use the text book. She also does not teach on the same path as the labs.
She is EASILY one of the worst professors in this building and if you need to take biology avoid her at all cost. She is not engaging, the lectures and exams don't line up, and you basically need to learn it all on your own time. I had to audit it before it tanked my GPA and I changed my major right after taking it.
Had her for Bisc207, 208, and 300, and if you are a responsible student that doesn't get frustrated that you have to do work in college for whatever reason, she is not that bad. Offers reflections during lectures after all exams to earn points back, and the exams are pretty straight forward. Write what she says in lecture, the slides are useless.
If you have any choice, do not take her. The first day of classes when she introduced herself to the class she announced that she knew about the rate my professor ratings and knew that other students say bad things about her. Mind you, this was my first impression of her and I actually had no idea she wasn't liked. Now I know why.
Had her for BICS207 wish I never took her class. She can't teach you basically have to teach yourself. She'll blame you for not understanding something. She'll put the random way stuff on the exams, stuff she didn't even cover. One of worst professors I've ever had. She has no compassion and won't try to help you learn.
Prof. Alenka was extremely difficult. Her lectures and exams don't fully match up. However, she loves when students participate in class and show effort in lectures. She is EXTREMELY partial to students that participate in class when it comes to grading. She was a really difficult professor, but she made me a better student and a harder worker.
Being transparent, I came into this class extremely optimistic, however it resulted in so much stress and anxiety. Her quizzes and exams are not straight forward at all, you can try and look up the answers but they will most of the time be incorrect for her assignment. It's very hard to do well in this class, 100% suggest taking another professor.
Lecture in this class is not worth anything. Simbio and out of class are far more useful than actually going. She'd randomly get mad at students sometimes for not understanding or paying attention. Her slides lack information and just are useless. Her exams aren't as bad as some of the reviews say, review the lecture assignments, it will help.
Does not provide notes of any kind besides SimBio. Lectures are not helpful whatsoever, all she does is draw on a few pictures. She locks every assignment so practice questions for tests are near impossible. Is less than helpful during lecture and will not provide help if you are stuck on a question.
Oh my god she sucks. Lectures are completely useless, all she does is ramble about the same topic for an hour, no substance. She locks assignments so you can't see how you did on them and it's nearly impossible to get feedback. Don't take her class but if you do you'll have to rely on the simbio assignments to learn the material.
Actually the worst professor I've ever had. She posts no resources for studying, which you will need to do because her lectures are useless. She rambles about random things and if she doesn't want to answer your question she'll say "I'm not spending 5 minutes explaining a whole class" Has no empathy, has 2 exams and an assignment every lecture.
I think the ratings are a little too low, her class was hard but if you do the homework, study, and go to her office hours you are going to get a good grade. I think she's recently changed her grading policies since getting so many complaints so now its much easier to get a better grade. She is a helpful and nice if you show you care.
Hard class. You have the work ethic to pass. It's a lot of studying and understanding outside of class, but honestly, that's college. The 1st weeks are bad, but things aren't that bad after the 1st exam. What helped me was going to her office hours, looking up videos, or reading the textbook. She messes up and doesn't teach in depth, so study!
I don't think this class is as bad or hard as some reviews make it. I feel like she wasn't even that hard of a grader on the exams. Lecture didn't really provide much information. The slides had barely any information. Simbio was helpful and my main source of information that helped me in assignments and exams. Lecture assignments were annoying.
I loved the professor she tries her best in teaching & makes sure that we understand. The thing is the course needs a lot of studying by your own and not only depend on lectures but also labs & other ideas too. Exams were hard if you don't study well but if you do study it will be easy. She gives an extra credit HW after each exam to boost grades
Doesn't teach anything applicable to the exams. All knowledge is effectively self taught. The coursework is not conducive to learning. I would rather bash my head into a wall.
She does not explain the topics in lectures coherently at all, and it does not flow together well, making it hard to understand what she's saying because she kind of just rambles on. Messes up a lot of questions on the lecture assignments, so you'll get a low grade until she goes back days later to fix her mistakes.
This is my civic virtue-do not take this professor.
I don't think she is horrible, per say, but I do think this class is. Her lectures contribute little to no information. I feel like her exams align more with Simbio than the work we do in class. Reviewing simbio and the LA is saving me. Open note exams luckily. sometimes she can be mean though
I don't even know what she saying
She was pretty cool but there were so many quizzes and so much sim bio i wanted to pull my hair out. if it wasn't for these 2 girls that taught me everything in the course i wouldn't have passed, at the beginning i thought i was pretty good at the material but as soon as the 2nd exam material started i knew nothing and i didn't understand anything.
She's knowledgeable but rambles in lectures and mostly scribbles on slides. Her grading is very inconsistent and don't try to question her on it. Expect 3+ timed Canvas quizzes weekly. SimBio is what actually teaches the material. Exams are heavy on application, so know everything. Find a study group and adjust your study habits quickly!
She's nice but her assignments are all timed and her grading is terrible. SimBios and study groups will save you when teaching yourself. She doesn't explain much and her lectures are usually not helpful and you can't read her handwriting. She completely changed the way I study which in the end was helpful but I'd never recommend.
Lectures are quite useless and you teach yourself. Exams are the hardest I've ever taken and she splits them into two parts. Half written and half Canvas. For the Canvas portion you can use your notes, but don't get too excited, it's only for the last 10 minutes and she doesn't allow you to backtrack on the questions you've already answered.
Dr. Alenka is a very sweet professor. However, for an introductory biology course, I find it to be quite unforgiving. Deadlines are VERY tight, which means you ought to keep an eye out for assignments. Missing one could jeopardize your grade. The assignments are very application-heavy, so know the material very well. Study a lot, you will need it.
This has to be the worst class I've ever taken. I have taken multiple advanced classes, and none are as near as hard. The lectures are terrible, she uses mostly images only with little to no note taking. The way she assigns is terrible. For example, it will be Saturday evening and she will assign not 1, but 2 quizzes to be done at 8 AM Tuesday.
I took the Honors Integrated section of this course this semester, and I felt that my foundations in biology were strengthened a lot after taking it; taking AP Bio helped. Her tests weren't so bad; some questions were from her lecture assignments so review those. Participating will help in understanding the content. She is kind at office hours.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Her slides and lectures are pointless with little to no info on them. This class has caused me so much stress and anxiety. She gives timed quizzes where you can't go back so it's hard to do well on them. Almost everyone I know in this class struggled and it feels like she's setting her students up for failure.
I can never tell what she's saying. In the beginning of the year she said she reads these reviews and knows how students feel about her but I don't get why she isn't doing anything to improve herself.
One of the hardest classes i've ever taken for no reason
Her class is definitely challenging but if you go to office hours they help. It is a lot of studying outside of class but the SimBio helps a lot. Make sure to do all of the pre quizzes because you can loose points from forgetting.
She does not teach very well and expects everyone to be on the same level as her. She is very unorganized. The biggest issue on her lecture activities and exams are her wording of the questions, many times the question would be asking something simple but she overcomplicates it. Do not take her class if you want a good GPA and a good grade!
Her exams are impossible and don't go along with what we learned in class. Take a different professor for your own sake.
Getting mauled by a bear is somehow less painful than taking this course. The course itself is actually pretty easy if you follow along with the SimBio; however, this professor somehow twists it in such an unnecessarily complicated fashion that I'd rather decipher hieroglyphics than do another forsaken lecture activity. Good luck!
