Absolutely fantastic professor. Work for your grade, marks are not easy. Engage in one on one discussions, she has a great personality and is always willing to help her students out. Ive been in the department for 5 years and taken 3 previous courses (101, 368, 392) registering for a 4th now (359).
The professor spends much of the class trying to make herself appear more intelligent by creating essay questions that are impossible to understand or use words that are not accually words (usually adding "ness" or "ly" to words)On the other hand, She is always willing to help out though and does seem like a good person.also very very heavy accent
Very intelligent lady. Very helpful, clear and straight to the point. Encourages discussion and respects your opinion. Made me feel comfortable in the class. Very organized, explains the material well. Her comments on your papers are sometimes rough..mean even but she is nice as a person..or appears to be
The accent threw me for the first few lectures. TA's both marked quite tough. Her lectures were intersting but way too fast. The participation and interest would've been better if she posted the slides on web-ct. She could have ensured attendence with short in lecture quizes or some other creative measure.Reading was heavy'ish but manageable.
Alessandra is one of the few genuinely nice human beings I've run across in my last few years. She's interested in her students and wants them to excel; she also knows her stuff, particularly theory. That said, be prepared to work very hard. Expect crazy reading, 2-3 long papers, and near-total reliance upon student presentations in her seminars.
I wasn't really happy with this class, but Alessandra was great. She added lots of variety to keep things interesting, and introduced me to interesting texts that I'd never read otherwise. Her tests and essay questions were really, really challenging, but she is a very kind marker. She is probably the most helpful prof I've ever had (and I've had so
alright
Quite and easy and really interesting class. Lots of readings, but they weren't all essential. Alessandra is a great prof who really cares about the material. Her accent is a bit strong at first but after one or two lectures you're totally used to it. Some lectures were pretty boring though and having them at 8:30AM made it hard to stay awake.
She has a very thick accent and that makes it very difficult to understand her. Even though she's a really nice person and quite helpful if you ask for her, I would avoid taking this class with her if it's possible. She also assigns way too much reading for a first year class.
She pretends to be helpful. This was a 100 level 3 credit course and she assign readings as if it was a 300 level 5 credit W course. DO NOT TAKE HER.
This class was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. There was an overwhelming amount of readings for a 100 level class. The material often didn't sync up with the textbook. This should be a 300 or even 400 level class. I would never take another class with this prof again. She is completely unrealistic with her expectations and workload!
Do not take this class with her! The only way doing so would be a good idea is if you're a WS major with a HIGH interest in the subject (background knowledge would help). Like others have said, it should not be a 100 level course. It should DEFINITELY be a W course. There's also WAY too much reading. The exams were SO ridiculous!
I've taken a couple of classes from her. Admittedly her accent can be challenging at times, but she's a superb teacher. The classes definitely weren't easy, but she's very knowledgeable and engaged, and very supportive as a person. Basically, I learned a great deal, with a lot of work but also much enjoyment.
I would not suggest taking this as a first women's studies course or as an elective. The level of reading and assignments is too high for a first year class. One of the toughest classes I've had, and I am in 3rd year.
Great prof, she's obviously passionate about the subject. She's a supportive and interesting prof with a variety of materials and assignments. Heavy workload, but it is a 300 level class. Would highly recommend the class with her.
I've taken 3 courses with her. WS 102, 207, and Special Topics 301. I found her to be one of the best instructors I've had at SFU. She made the classes feel very unpretentious, instead, very open and inviting. She was very helpful, and her comments on returned papers contained useful criticisms to improve work quality.
She is a wonderful professor very approachable and helpful. She really tries to help you achieve the best grade possible. But her lectures are boring and dry. Nonetheless, I would take a class with her again.
Now, I have taken three courses with Alessandra (HUM 204, WL 320, and HUM 221), and I have to say she is one of the best profs at SFU. She is perfect for anyone wanting to excel in their studies and learn TONS. Your brain WILL EXPLODE.
I would not recommend taking this course with Alessandra. She is a nice professor and is willing to help, but I think she was very ill-prepared to teach this course. The reading load was very heavy, and she barely covered anything in class. I could understand how she would be a good professor in other courses, but not in this one.
I agree with another poster. I would not recommend taking this class with Alessandra. She is approachable and willing to help, but the workload is extremely heavy and she is unclear on her expectations. Mid-term was brutal. This course should require Humanities pre requisites as I was lost halfway through.
Fair marker, encourages and is understanding of students. Accent can be thick at times, but this class was enjoyable!
Alessandra is nice lady, sweet, likes to laugh with the class... but OMG this class was ridiculously hard. The material is brutal. It is really hard to work through. LOTS of reading, papers that will make you want to cry, and mandatory weekly online discussions. Plus, no offense to Alessandra, but it is quite difficult to understand her accent.
A very nice person but a terrible teacher - unclear about her assignments and never really available for help; the concepts she brought to the table about the books were really out there. Super nice woman, but would never take a class with her again.
Alessandra is super helpful! She is very encouraging to all her students and her marking is very generous. This was one of my first post-secondary english courses and she made sure to never grade with too much criticism unlike my other english courses. Definitely a GPA booster if you put in a little bit of effort and participate!
Went in thinking it would be an easy enough engl class, came out of it thoroughly exhausted, would not recommend
Just the average english class.
Thought this would be a easy A, as stated in the comments. Complete opposite. Would not recommend not even close to a GPA booster. Take this from the average student. These ratings seem very biased, would not take again.
If you are taking 103 good luck
I was nervous to take this class but Alessandra made it really enjoyable. The structure was not like most classes; A LOT of in-class discussion plus writing exercises and the occasional movie. There was no real lecture per se and so you don't have to take notes ever! Just attend, read at least some of the material, and participate- you'll do great!
There is a lot of reading. A lot. She has a relatively thick accent, so if you have trouble with that sort of thing, her lectures may be difficult to follow. Fair marker, fair assignments, fair exams. She listed dozens of characters to know for the final, but you don't need to know them; rather, you need to know the story they're in.
One of the most engaged and helpful professors I've had. She once stayed an hour after lecture just discussing the material with a few students. In class discussions are encouraged and she is quick to engage with students who show effort. She is a very easy marker, but her handwritten feedback is illegible. I would recommend joining her tutorial.
Alessandra is a very engaging prof, and loves to have discussions in her tutorial classes. She's also an easy market, but expect to read and write a lot. She is also very nice so don't be scared to visit her office hours. As long as you put the effort into the class you should come out with a good mark :)
brutal. thats all I have to say.
The majority of this class was spent on writing summaries in groups, a highly distinct skill that is hard to apply to all disciplines. Feedback was often specific to the assignment being graded, and was hard to implement in future assignments. Lessons on citations were left to the last day, where she directed us to the SFU library website.
Alessandra is super approachable and if you visit and make use of office hours she will go over major assignments with you and answer any questions you have. As with all english courses, she is very picky about seeing what she wants to see on assignments, but marks relatively easy. English 199 is hard, but not too bad with her!
Lectures are mostly her talking about the readings + some discussion. Final exam is based entirely off the readings so make sure you keep up (even if they're dense). Group project is worth 20%, pick a unique issue or approach it from a unique perspective. Her grading criteria sounds tough but it's not actually that bad.
Her voice is so monotone, the class is vey difficult to sit through because it just bores you to sleep. No enthusiasm, just talks all class long. Doesn't engage with her students often.
If you are into knowledge, art and literature; take her. Her classes are for those who are passionate or at least interested in the topics. One of the most inspirational profs I've learned from. You can ask her anything related to the readings, you will be surprised. She toned down on the difficulty of the stuff she teaches already.
Alessandra is an easy marker and is willing to help. Though her lectures are very boring and it can be difficult to follow along with her thick accent. As long as you read the books, you will be fine and attending lectures are not mandatory.
The lectures are very boring and long, but due to the TA, the class was so easy even if you don't attend or pay attention in lectures. I find her notes to be useless and not well made. Moreover, she has a strong accent and her voice is very monotone. Just read and understand the books and be prepared to learn on your own time, and you'll do well.
Alessandra is whip-smart, kind, and very non-judgmental. The four hour lecture was 100% discussion-based, incredible, and exhausting. Your brain hurts by the time you leave. But it is so worth it. Love her
Took this class for my external UD requirements. She's a great prof, marks fair if you're not a HUM major. Class is pretty text-heavy though, so if you don't do your readings or understand the concepts, you're gonna struggle.
Alessandra is a gem. I've taken a few courses with her, always a heavy reading list, long lectures. However, she is really, really forgiving in the marking scheme and you can do great as she expects only an approximate understanding. Best feedback on essays and discussions. If you're willing to work, you'll learn more from her than any other prof.
If you have good writing skills, you will do well. You only need a basic understanding of plot and characters in the reading material. I recommend taking the tutorial with her, she is very understanding and marks easily. Lectures could be boring, but she really guides you into what to write for successful papers if you pay attention.
Professor Capperdoni is amazing! She is understanding and is opened to questions, she is passionate about what she teaches and provides great feedbacks on assignments. Her marking is fair and she makes it clear on what she expects for assignments. Make sure to read materials before each lecture! I would def take another class with her!
Professor Capperdoni is one of the most genuinely intelligent professors I've ever had. I feel like I've learned more from this class than any other class, and only wished that it would have lasted longer than a semester! We had a lot of readings every week which were really difficult, so be prepared to read.
Alessandra is a very sweet and genuine person but not helpful as a prof. A lot of reading required, and exam questions are random and asking for a lot in the time limit. Two essays with good prompts but she takes forever to respond to emails so don't expect feedback. Thought it would be interesting but she took the fun out a great subject.
She is unorganized and there are so many readings. Her finals and weekly discussion are long and too many things to do. a lot of homework and she is usually late at giving the essay back.
Expecting students to type 3 essays back to back is beyond any amount of reason. This exam was petitioned against and was reduced from 13 pages in 3 hours to 9 pages in 4 hours. Unreasonable in any circumstance let alone during a pandemic. Most students barely finished in 4 hours. A massive failure of an educator who is otherwise not half bad.
Her lectures were kind of disorganized and at times hard to follow. Finishing the midterm in time was difficult for me and i eventually dropped. Good thing too because the final was meant to be a 13 page paper written in 3 hours, that was reduced apparently already from the original??? Eventually the remaining students petitioned and it became 9 pg
Shes a good teacher but her lectures are a little hard to follow because she tends to go on tangents that she will test on and she assigns a ton of readings and you wont be able to go though class without reading them. She always gives a lot of helpful feedback and if you go to her office hours shell really help you understand material.
Took her class in Fall 2019. While her lectures can be really boring, she's a fair marker and exams will look exactly like she described them to be. The readings and weekly discussions can be super time-consuming so I wouldn't recommend her class if you're taking a full course load. Be sure to go to tutorials as they can be really helpful for exams
Capperdoni assigns a weekly essay and discussion post that alternate from week to week. They are assigned on Thursday and due on Saturday or Sunday, so it's not a lot of time. However, she is quite and easier marker so I found these assignments very manageable. Another thing to note, make sure you do the readings for the midterm and final!
Each week is either a discussion post or essay based on the readings (6 of each in total). Need to read a lot of books (I managed to get through the second half of the semester with only reading summaries online so do with that as you will). Though a lot of work, she marks very leniently - as long as the questions was answered, you got a good mark
All I can say is that I took her class online, and it was a very bad experience. she goes on for four hours, with barely any breaks. She would assignment 100 pages or more for reading, for a single week. She will give assignment without grading any until the end, so basically you don't know if you are passing or failing. midterm was 12 pages long.
Boring , dry and long lectures
Lectures are super dry. Have to read about 100 pages every week. Midterm, paper, readings+lecture, discussion all within the same week. Hard to receive high grades. She expects you to write more than 4 pages of writing within an hour for a midterm, which is also proctored on zoom. Never ever ever take a class with her.
Assignments and discussions during the same week?? Discussions are based on about 100 pages of reading. Too much workload for a single course
way too many readings and assignments per week (especially for a first year course). i was drowning in work trying to get a paper+discussion post and responses done within a week, while also having other classes. her lectures are dry but i also don't think they're crucial to the course- I've been doing well without watching any of them.
By far the worst class I've taken since entering university. Prof expects too much from students, causing more stress than necessary for a first year course. Do not take this course with Alessandra even if you're interested in Greek mythology- better luck with a different prof.
DO NOT TAKE WITH THIS PROF
Like the other ratings suggest, she is just awful when it comes to learning expectations for lower division courses. Thought this course would be maybe different, but some professors simply cannot teach. Great person, but horrible as professor.
So many papers and due very quickly after being assigned. If you take it at the beginning of the fall send her be ready to work and read during holidays, she does not care. Decent marker, 100 some pages to read every week and Only a few days to do it.
There is a midterm, 4 mini-essays (discussion posts), 3 tutorial posts, a final paper and a final essay. For a class with no textbook and useless lecture slides, there is so much homework. Marks were easy to get but assignments require a lot of independent research as nothing is covered in lectures. The professor is nice though.
Terrible prof. Lectures are dry and consist of a powerpoint full of images which drag on over the course of three hours straight. Assignments are graded harshly and feedback is inconsistent. The four discussion posts and final essay and the content covered in lecture alone cannot fulfil the content required to write them. Don't take this course.
The course itself is difficult, as it has a lot of weekly reading. However it is compensated by Alessandra being an incredibly high grader.
lectures are irrelevant + insane amount of reading that doesn't even have any relevance. says to study 1 thing then makes the test the opposite. doesnt stick to own grading scheme. makes u write a long 10 page essay for just 5% of grade. makes 4 huge unrelated assignments due same day as final exam. very inconsiderate + disorganized. lost my exam
horrible communication from this prof. no matter how hard you work in her class she will always tell you it's "not good enough". completley unreasonable grading systems. if u ask what to study ahead of the exam she will provide the wrong info. not on top of her own job but expects u to be for her. doesnt reply to emails when she messes up.
i took a 100 level course online with her previously and thought it was fine, but now i realize the ta did all the work for her. horrible prof who crams all assignments from the semester to the same day as the final. she words questions in weird ways that nobody can understand so many people fail. i never knew it was possible to fail papers.
I have no words. Just, wow. What a horrible experience.
Dr. Capperdoni has very thorough lectures and picks great readings. The notes she provides are very helpful in understanding the readings. She gives clear expectations of what's expected for papers and exams. I also feel that she is a generous but fair grader. She made classical myth very interesting and I wish I could take all my courses from her.
Lots of reading! Discussions in lectures could help with assignment and discussion posts. Also a kind lecturer and grader.
Her recorded lectures do not have captions, cannot understand her nor have 1.5hrs+ to sit and read lips every week. Inconsistent deadlines Sun/Mon/Wed/Fri. Hard to contact prof or get her to reply to emails. She wants you to note every detail from a translated book. She straight up says your interpretation is wrong, is this a philosophy class?!? No
Get ready to read a lot. However, it's an interesting and enjoyable course.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS NO MATTER WHAT. The heaviest reading load you will ever experience. You read 5 chapters of the Iliad every couple of days and the heavy discussion posts are ridiculous. WAY TOO MUCH WORK FOR AN INTRODUCTORY WRITING COURSE. Easy marker but 100% would not recommend when you have to write an essay every week.
Do not take this class if you're not prepared to write 500+ word analyses weekly, a midterm requiring you to write around 8 paragraphs in an hour, and deadlines that will mess up your sleep schedule beyond belief. She will schedule long analysis posts while also having a multiple page project the same week. THIS CLASS IS HORRID.
Do NOT take this course. Workload is astronomically excessive for a 100-level class with 500+ word analyses, papers, assignments, and hundreds of pages to read each week. Don't forget about the midterm asking for 8 polished paragraphs (GIVEN ONLY 1 HOUR). This course was genuinely heavier and more stressful than all my other courses combined.
I took this for a breadth requirement which I am sure there are easier classes you could take instead of this one. LOTS of reading, you are assigned multiple chapters every week. I had to spend a lot more time than should be expected for a 3 credit course. If you aren't good at text analysis (which I learned I am not) I wouldn't take this course.
Tons of readings each week, posts lecture notes and lecture videos on top of that. But the videos are sort of poor quality & not accessible due to no captions being provided. For it being a 100 level course for credit, i'm surprised how much i am required to do each week, including having something due during reading week!
DO NOT TAKW THIS CLASS!!! I took this in my 3rd year to get my H credit and it is the most time consuming and mind numbing course ever. 4 books per week!
Hundreds of pages of reading each week. Assigns a paper on a Monday due Saturday morning, with the midterm on Wednesday. Provided handouts are bad copies scanned sideways and backwards. Course ends in two weeks and still no marks or feedback on the first and second papers due in February. Avoid.
Tons of homework worth little grades. In one week assigns over 20 pages of readings, has an essay due and a midterm. Weekly work requires reading over 100 pages plus lectures and a discussion post of some kind. Video lectures are difficult to understand.
This class has an essay, discussion post, AND quiz in the same week as the MIDTERM. Do NOT take this as an elective, no matter how much you may think you like mythology. It will ruin your GPA not just because of how hard it is, but also because you'll be spending WAY too much time on it per week than any 100 level class should be allowed.
do not take this course if you have 3 or more classes at the same time. this course asks for way too much especially for a 100lvl course. if you do not have 10 hours a week to focus on this class do not bother. while the material is fun everything else is horror. do not take it unless you have a lot of spare time to work on this course.
I went into this course to satisfy my B-Hum requirements. My three problems with her: she embodies why STEM majors don't respect the humanities, she assigns a monstrous load of work every week, and she is a ridiculously harsh marker. My paper is an interpretation, and then she gets to interpret my paper as harshly as possible. Not fair at all.
