Alex is the most helpful, caring educator I've met at UT. Take anything he teaches!
Alex really loves to teach and you can tell! He's awesome if you struggle with calculus, he can really give you one on one time and pay attention to your needs. His lectures are smooth and easy to follow. Usually goes over homework in class
Alex is by far the best teacher and friend I have ever had the privilege to learn from! He truly cares about his students' welfare, and will help you in office hours until the AM to make sure you really understand the topic. Before this class I failed calculus twice and hated math, now I actually understand what is going on and I aced the class!
The beauty about his class, besides the fact that he's hilarious, is that there are no secrets. If you show up to class, you will most likely ace the class. He tells you what you needs to know and will work with you to tutor you in anyway he can. He's great.
Only reason I stayed in differential equations.
No amount of praise is possible for this dude, he's the only reason I did well in differential equations
He loves what he does, and I love him
Alex cares more about his students than anyone on campus. He challenges you to do better and makes learning enjoyable. You're in great hands if you have Alex as a TA/professor.
Alex is AMAZING!!! Truly one of the best teachers out there... really is committed to helping you master the material and explains things very clearly. Super cool guy. Clearly knows his stuff
Had him for 408D as a TA and was the best experience, dumbed it down for the students but didn't make you feel dumb. Now I purposely arranged my fall semester to accommodate his class time as an instructor for M427J.
Alex was my TA for 408D but, but he was essentially the professor. He cares a lot about every student & takes the time to make sure you understand concepts and how to apply them. Easily one of the best professors at UT. He makes you excited to come to class & learn, and as the result everyone ended up being really familiar with the material.
The best TA I have ever had. Heard he became a professor this year. He totally deserves it. Alex is an amazing teacher. He respects everyone, will work with you one on one, is hilarious, engages everyone in class, and gives so many examples. He makes math fun.
He is the best professor in UT for maths.
Beautiful maths person
Omg!!! Where do I begin. Alex is such an amazing professor, the best math teacher Ive ever had! I have him for calculus and he makes it so understandable! He is so funny, during lecture Im literally cracking up. Also he is very approachable, so if you have a question, then hes super nice about it! Def take him if u can! I am grateful that I did!
Alex almost always starts off his lectures with a story. They're wildly entertaining and gets the class hyped up. Taking notes during class is super helpful, because he goes over specific questions in the Quest homework (starring ones that likely show up on the test). Super relatable person. Big math brain. Study Quest homework do well on tests.
Alex was a phenomenal professor, but could be more professional. There were times when he would say things like, "I'm not going to lie, I'm going to judge you if you get this wrong," and even though he was joking, it made me second-guess seeking help outside of class. Other than that, his passionate and energetic teaching was amazingly helpful.
For my first ever, college level maths class, I can without a doubt say that he made Calculus easy. He is a fantastic lecturer and, despite the fact that he is very laid back and unprofessional at times, I learned a lot. Do the homework, go to office hours and review sessions for tests to ask questions, keep up with quest and you'll make an easy B
Alex is a very effective and caring professor, while also extremely chill and laid back. I am not the biggest fan of calculus, but he made the class as easy and stress-free as possible. I highly recommend taking him for Differential Calculus!
ALEX IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER! If you have the opportunity to take him, do it. He cares so much about his students and really wants everyone to succeed. Before each test he gives a great review and I would recommend going to it. If you know how to do all the homework, you will get an A on every test because every question is from the homework.
Alex is, without doubt, the best math instructor I've had at any level. After taking his class, I feel that I have a better understanding of not just calculus but math as-a-whole. Although Alex tends to meander on from topic to topic, his lectures remain interesting due to his charisma and the prof has a unique ability to make math UNDERSTANDABLE.
Alex is the best! He makes a huge effort to make the subject easy to understand while pushing you to learn more. He's super funny and will conduct office hours for as long as you need, and he clearly cares about his students. If you're struggling or need a rec letter, GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He knows every OH regular by name.
Alex is a unique and remarkable teacher, he helped me and many of my classmates improve in understanding and performing on exams. You need to go to his lectures and his office hours are important; he gives many exact questions that are on the test! He really cares about his students and is my favorite professor so far.
Awesome lectures. He's kind of inaccessible for non-math-related questions, but that's only because he spends a great deal of time helping his students outside of class. For example, he holds his OH in a classroom and just answers math questions the whole time. It's honestly pretty awesome.
Alex is an amazing professor. His lectures were interesting and his explanations of problems made everything easy to understand. He's a very good math teacher and I would 100% recommend taking him.
Alex is one of the best professors I have had so far in UT. Not only does he explain everything with the utmost clarity, he makes it interesting as well. He livens the class up with some jokes and goes off topic sometimes to get everybody's attention. He has loads of office hours that are like mini lectures. He is also incredibly friendly.
The LOML. Alex is such an amazing professor and a great friend. I fell in love with him at first glance. He's so smart and knows how to "dumb" the information down for us. He is so funny and has stories for everything. The material was complicated but he was always there to help me. He helps you out while taking tests and guides you through.
I miss having Alex for 408k!!! Ugh I miss his stories and taking his Calc class. I would laugh so much!!
Alex was probably one of the best professors I've had so far at UT. Whatever class he teaches, TAKE IT. He made calc so simple and he helped us when we needed it. I felt like I had a friend as a professor. Such a refreshing atmosphere. The only reason I got a low grade was that I studied the day before my exams. His reviews are super helpful tho.
By far the best math professor I've taken at UT. He was very clear in lectures, no need for a textbook. Office hours were a great help. He made sure everyone understood the concept before leaving. Go to class and take notes and pay attention.... guaranteed a good grade.
the class can be tough, but alex + the experience is so worth the difficulty
A great teacher but not an easy A. If you put in the effort you can get an A. Alex is available for countless hours several days of the week to assist his students in their studies. Take him if you want to work hard and become a better mathematician as a whole. Lectures often funny too.
Don't take geometry with Alex if you're not serious about math. This isn't high school geometry like you think it is. It's a trap and it feels like an acid trip. Alex is canonical. He grades easy but that's unless you work hard for it. Beware of his take-home exams! You will have fun in this class but will also experience hell. Have math faith.
Is this the hardest class that I've ever taken at UT? Yes Is it the best class I've taken at UT? Yes Alex is accessible to students for numerous hours, believes in you, and always tells you to have math faith. You will grow as a mathematician and be better because of it, but it won't be easy.
I hope you have lots of time to spend at his office hours in order to do well on his take home exams! He's a great teacher, but the exams are challenging and time consuming.
Alex is amazing. He really cares for his students and is willing to stay in office hours for as long as it takes to help you until you understand. Although lecture isn't mandatory, make sure to show up because he explains class concepts very well. There was only one take home mid term and final with plenty of opportunity for extra credit.
He is a great teacher who really cares about his students success but he teaches his own curriculum from his own book so it sucks when you're stuck and can only go to him or other students taking him for help. Exams are spread out across 2 days and he tells you exactly what is going to be on them.
Alex is such a great math teacher, he explains all of the concepts so well. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow. The way he teaches is mainly by giving an overview of the concept and then doing multiple practice problems involving the topic, which I found really helpful. He's super laid back
Alex is the best prof Ive had at UT by far! I seriously wish I could be friends with him after this class -hes so funny and an actual GENIUS! He is uses subtopics and steps that make learning a lot more manageable. Have math faith and load up your math heart and youll be just fine!
Really cool dude and genuinely understands that you're a college student and you have a lot on your plate. He broke down the steps very clearly and gave us lots of examples of how to solve problems. My only complaint would be some of the test questions were much, much harder than the homework problems, you have to be very creative to solve them.
Never fond of calculus, but Alex really showed me that it could be easy if you knew how to approach the problem. His lectures were very straight forward and easy to follow. He also helped you do some hw problems during class. Office hours were really fun and a great way to get a good grip on the material. LOVED IT SO MUCH!! Best math professor ever
Alex is a great instructor, but the material he teaches is hard. he doesn't go too in-depth over the concepts and sometimes there are homework questions that were not covered in class that are hard to do on your own. If you have a question he does make it easy to ask in class, he will go over hw questions and his tests are pretty predictable.
Macedo is the BEST PROFESSOR EVER. He's funny and chill - he's young if that helps. He's really smart and knows what he's doing and if you talk to him, he'll really try to help you. His teaching style is great and easy to understand. If you at least go to lectures and pay attention - you'll do great. It's hard material but he's an AMAZING PROF.
LOVE MACEDO. He made Calculus fun. I switched to his class and didn't regret. He gives review sessions before exams and truly wants everyone to pass, so just go up to him if you have a question, but make sure it is not something he has said already. Calculus in general can be hard, but at least he makes it interesting. Fav class this semester.
Professor Macedo was the best math teacher I have ever had. I have always hated math, and I thought calc in high school was impossible, but in his class I finally understood it. He explains everything well and is willing to take time to answer your questions. His review sessions and lectures are really helpful plus he is hilarious.
Such an awesome professor! If you get the chance, you have to take from Alex! Hands down the BEST math professor at UT. I had a horrible calc teacher in HS &was scared about taking it at UT, but Alex made calculus seem so simple and easy! He walks you through what kinds of problems will be on the hw and tests. (Also hes so funny & makes class fun)
AMAZING PROF! He jokes around with students and he's very relatable, but you still learn so much in that class and in M408K, because he's such a good teacher! 10/10!
Alex' lectures are the best you'll have. He looks about 22 and acts like it as well. He is high-energy and gives clear, beautifully painted lectures totally off-the-cuff. He defies every stuffy, old stereotype surrounding math and replaces it with excitement and intriguing ideas. He cares that students learn, not regurgitate. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Alex is an amazing professor, and makes every lecture worthwhile. He explains the content very well, and makes sure you understand it. He holds lots of office hours to help you, and teaches you to have math faith. I learned a lot, but this is the hardest class I've taken, both with respect to the time required and difficulty.
Alex is a genius! His charisma makes his class enjoyable and he specifies what exactly will be on the exams. His explanations for problems are straightforward and he welcomes any questions in class. Do the homework because it is exactly what you can expect on the exams. The textbook was not used much. You won't regret taking him!!
Alex is an incredible prof! This course was by-far the hardest I've ever taken, though. He makes the content digestible and holds a lot of office hours. Try to do proofs some time after class as it will help with homework/exams. If you regularly attend office hours/study groups, you'll do well!! He's young and cute, too, which is a plus haha.
I suck at math BUT the class was actually pretty fun and I learned a lot. You definitely have to work for your grade and actually understand the concepts. Lectures are not mandatory but they cover basically what is going to be on exams and he simplifies concepts. He's also funny in his lectures and also gives good feedback, I recommend!
Alex is an amazing professor. He cares a lot and is always available to help. I really like that if you don't understand something or have a question he is never condescending, he always tries his best to help. The class is still super hard though, prioritize it b/c if you fall behind its almost impossible to catch back up. HW correlates to tests.
An AMAZING professor!! He is very charismatic and hilarious, which makes rather tedious or challenging material bearable! The tests are very similar to the homework and reviews he gives you, so put effort into them! Also, go to his office hours if you have questions because that's where I learned the most. Don't fall behind because it builds!
Hes absolutely the best math professor Ive ever had; I definitely recommend taking his class if you can.
Best prof I've ever had at UT. Sooo funny and makes math so fun! He explains stuff so clearly (unlike others profs that just derive formulas) and does SO MANY EXAMPLES! He once held a 3-hour review session for us. He cares so much!! Every lecture I've attended of his has been "math-e-magical". I'm ngl vector calc is hard but he makes it manageable.
Inspirational, I had him as TA while he finished his degree. Amazing guy and was very understandable helped break down not only how to do problems but how to make up new problems and change the easier problem types into more difficult situations, made learning a opportunity for evolution. Has wonderful tangents, ask him why hes psychic.
Alex is passionate about math and it shows in his lectures. At the same time he cares about his students and will spend time making sure concepts are understood. Additionally, he taught how and why various approaches are used in different fields/problems. He is an amazing teacher!
An amazing professor. His lectures were easy to understand, and if there were any questions, he answered them thoroughly and respectfully. Occasionally, we got lucky and he would share a story to lift our spirits. The work load is about what is to be expected, but by no means is it unreasonable given the professor's resources.
Normally I'm not a fan of math but Alex made the class fun and the concepts easy to grasp! 10/10 would recommend.
BEST PROF IVE HAD!! ! Alex wants students to understand the WHY behind every problem/process that you do and he's willing to work with people so everyone understands the content as much as they can. a bit strict on deadlines, but that's because you've always got a TON of time (multiple days) to do every assignment. he's also a gamer mad respect.
Dr. Macedo was an absolutely phenomenal Calculus teacher. He was kind, accommodating, and had the goal of helping us learn first. His class consists of worksheets, tests, and projects. His TA team is also super helpful. Highly, highly recommend his class! I would take this again if I could! :)
As someone who is not very good at math, I thoroughly enjoyed this class! Alex makes sure you understand and if you are still struggling he will go out of his way to help! He is very accommodating and really cares about his students and is so passionate that it makes you excited to learn. I can confidently say I have never enjoyed a math class more
ALEX IS THE BEST!!!! He really cares about his students learning and being able to apply concepts. JUST TAKE HIM.
Literally the best Professor I think anyone can have while attending UT, so funny and relatable. Alex makes your semester and class fun, and I wish he could teach all of my classes.
This is the best (read: easiest) Calc to take. Alex is very funny, relatable, and understanding, and we all loved him so much! Xu Tian is an amazing TA as well! Do the work, get the A. Lots of Quest modules, worksheets, homeworks, and mini-projects, but your TA is helping you most of the time. Exams arent much hard either. Great guy!
Alex is the best professor. Class consisted of lectures, TA discussions, and outside work - hw, group projects, take-home exams. Class was always fun, filled with learning & student banter. As long as you're trying & stick to deadlines, an A is very possible. Office hours & TAs were great & so helpful, textbook is only for hw. Definitely recommend!
Alex was an amazing professor! I thoroughly enjoyed his class and found myself, someone who hasn't even taken pre-calc, learning, and understanding calculus tremendously. Alex really cares for his students and is super funny and respected in class. I can genuinely say I will miss his class.
I was terrified of taking Calculus, but Alex made it so easy! I had him online Fall of 2020. Tests were take home, homework was easily doable and you could ask for help from TA's. Alex cares about his students and will try his best to make sure you succeed. For sure go to your discussion section, the TA's help so much!
After reading the RMP reviews I was still nervous to take this class because i have never been great at calculus. However, Dr. Macedo is absolutely amazing and I would recommend every single person to take this class. Hands down my favorite professor at UT.
I'm not particularly good at math but this class was fun. I recommend creating a study group with classmates so you can work on assignments together and explain concepts to each other; that's what got me through this class so easily. Dr. Macedo is very nice and at times the lectures may be hard to follow but put the work in and you'll be rewarded!
Alex is such a good professor! I thought that the course material was fairly easy, and we definitely weren't given too much work. The work that we did have was graded pretty easily! Overall, for me, this class was pretty stress-free and I totally enjoyed having Alex as a professor. My TA, Bethany, was also amazing!
Really kind prof who really cares about students well being. I had him online which I'm sure is way easier than in person since tests were take home and open note. Still, he's a really nice guy who's funny and open to questions. He's also a clear lecturer and will take time to explain harder concepts until everyone gets it. Highly recommend!
Stay on top of everything and attend office hours. Alex is a great professor and always willing to help a student.
A genuinely great professor in that he checks in with everyone personally before class, and teaches very relatable with great geometry visuals. 10 HWs, two exams, and free participation grade. Hard class but he is more than willing to offer help, and encourages collaboration. Friendly guy, and highly recommend this math elective!
Alex is amazing and MY FAV MATH professor at UT (speaking as a senior math major). The way he explains concepts is so helpful and he grades generously and genuinely cares about students learning. He's also super funny and is probably the only professor who has made me laugh out loud at his stories. Couldn't recommend him more! Take him
Alex (what he goes by) was a great, nice instructor also cause he taught well. We did have a few take-home exams and take-home final that took kind of while, but overall, he makes this class easy for you to get A. However, communication got worse later in July cause he wasn't clear about when we had quizzes or homework. He put hard hw w/ final tho.
Class taken in Summer 2021. Exams and course content are difficult and cover challenging concepts, so be sure to attend the TA office hours and discussion sections. Please, don't procrastinate. Get ready for a bunch of quizzes & homework throughout the week, but all of the assignments are helpful for studying before the exams.
He's super funny and has clear lectures. Definitely made calculus enjoyable to look forward to. His teaching style is great, with many worksheets that are simple and to the point. The tests are take home, so he answers a lot of questions!
This class is easy and worthwhile. You do a lot of group activities like worksheets and miniprojects. The tests are take home tests that you have several days to do, and he always reviews the questions before giving out the test and it's like the exact same thing. Prof. Macedo is funny and makes class enjoyable.
I really liked this class and Dr. Macedo made it easy to understand. You can come in without having the best understanding of calculus and come out feeling really confident. There are some group assignments which suck but they are easy. Test and other things are easy as well. He makes sure you understand everything and is kinda funny.
Can not recommend him enough. Really a great professor. He was always personable and clear with his expectations. His lectures are great and easy to understand. He encourages student participation. The only drawback is that he grades most of the major assignments himself so it takes a while to get back. Otherwise, a fantastic class.
Prof. Macedo is just a delight, and I swear by this. He's funny, and personable during lecture and always asks the class if the material makes sense. I think he understands how scary undergrad is, so he tries his best to make the class doable. If you pay attention to lecture you'll do perfectly fine on all assignments.
Dr. Macedo was very laid-back, and he made what you need to know very clear. For bio majors, this class knocks out all of your calc reqs, as opposed to taking two semesters. Also, the material relates more to science than a typical calc class, and he is pretty funny. I highly recommend him!
Alex puts you into a randomly assigned "calculu" of 4 students who you will work on assignments with for the duration of the semester. I grew to be pretty great friends with my group and if I was ever frustrated, we were in it together (which makes it so much more bearable). The work isn't super easy but he is a generous grader and very likeable.
Professor Macedo is very funny and laid back. Discussion assignments and mini-projects are always group work. Tests and homework (weekly Quest modules and occasional textbook) are straight-forward. Lectures are recorded and uploaded. As long as you get along with your group, you probably won't have to worry that much about the class.
Very understanding professor, cares about his students and tells great stories during class. Explains every step to solving different types of problems and the example questions in class were really helpful for the quizzes and exams. HW, quizzes, and exams are all very doable, definitely would take again!
I love Dr. Macedo!!! His class was the best class I took last semester. I wish he taught every class because he is by far the sweetest professor who wants all his students to get an A. Take him if you have the chance! I also love his TA Enrique, he is such a king.
I love Alex! He is super sweet and caring and is very lenient about deadlines. I would say that the difficulty of this class really depends on if you have a good group since you do all of your worksheets/projects with that same group the whole semester.
Alex is such a great professor that wants everyone to succeed in his class! Class participation is not mandatory and hybrid. Theres 1-2 weekly worksheets that need to be finished in groups, but they not that hard. The exams are all take-home and Alex is super chill and very flexible with deadlines.
From a boyfriend: I do not like this professor, my gf is always talking about how funny his lectures are, how great of a professor he is, and how caring he seems about each of his students. DO NOT LET YOUR GF TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, you'll end up losing her admiration to this guy. Back to the gf --> I give him a thumbs up as long as the TA is good.
Macedo is a nice professor, just extremely unorganized. The material is pretty easy and overall the class is an easy A, but the class is 90% group work and he takes forever to grade things.
I loved Dr. Macedo's very understanding and flexible deadlines. I got really lucky getting him as a professor, if you can I would highly recommend you take his class.
Professor Macedo was just the best. He is wicked smart, so funny, and an amazing lecturer. There are a lot of worksheets and exams but they are usually very straightforward and a reflection of his lectures. Class was super enjoyable and Macedo always found ways to make it entertaining. I hated calc in high school but Macedo make me kinda love it.
TAKE MACEDO FOR M408Q!!! Such a great guy and an easy class if you have taken calc before. His lectures are fun and the tests are take home and just like the homework. I haven't stressed about this class once and still have learned a lot.
Whatever you do, just take this class with him, you'll thank me later.
Super funny and friendly teacher with many interesting stories. The groups that you are put in matter because you will be doing around 2 worksheets a week with them. Make friends in the class to be able to work with and it shouldn't be too hard of a class.
Clear lectures, enjoyed group quizzes, liked how course had some level of problem-solving. Class very disorganized which stressed me out, partially excusable as his water cooler exploded: Doesn't respond to canvas messages, didn't upload Zoom lecture before the next lecture, didn't grade 1st exam before Q-drop deadline.
Do yourself a favor and take M408Q with Alex, he's great.
Alex is such a good prof, makes everything really easy and understandable and is very flexible with deadlines. The group worksheets in discussion sections are kinda annoying if you're the only one doing everything but other than that take his class!!
Alex is a really cool professor and very lax. He is extremely knowledgeable in the material and is willing to go back and explain past concepts. His quizzes are quite similar to the midterms and he is pretty lenient with turning in things late. The thing is that he is often unorganized and does not grade things in a timely manner. Solid choice tho!
Amazing! Took M427J over the summer with him. Attendance was not mandatory and there were 4 midterms that made up 80% of the grade but they were all take-home exams where you are given 72 hours to kindly solve the problem and upload the pdf on canvas. Easy A and amazing lectures. Homeworks are due every Sunday and make up 20% of semester grade
he didn't grade a single assignment until a week before grades were due. fall semester has started and he already inputted our final grades based on 1 of the 4 midterms we took. he still hasn't graded 3 of our midterms or given us any feedback whatsoever. he's a good lecturer but he's so difficult to get in contact with especially about grades.
Great professor. Took him over the summer while doing an internship and was able to get my work done. Very easy, highly recommend.
Macedo was a great professor. Excellent, relatable lecturer who focuses on going through every step of an example and ensures student understanding by seriously considering questions. One critique: I took this during the summer session and due to the number of students the professor was given, midterm grades were not released till the final week.
Easy class, great lectures, exams open-note. However, I am rating him a 3 because of his complete lack of communication and never giving grades back. We only received 1 out of the 4 exam grades back (pretty sure he gave everyone a 100). He hardly responds to emails or Piazza. I've never been so annoyed at a prof before. But ig an A is an A tho lol
The rating below this one (with the 3.0 quality and 1.0 difficulty) is supposed to be for M427J, not M427L. Continuing from the last post, when he would send an email out saying he'll do something, he would never follow through (posting solutions, extra credit, giving grades back). Overall, how he handled this class was very unprofessional
Take Him, can't emphasize enough. Period. The Best. OG. Got a 100% in the class. Amazing professor!
I would highly recommend Alex Macedo for M427J. Probably one of the better profs I've had for Math.
Great professor! He makes sure you understand the content taught in lectures though it takes at least 4 weeks to get any grade back. Some of the group work in discussion is not taught in class but its a great way to learn more. Didn't have course plan or schedule in syllabus making it difficult to keep track of tasks and topics.
Lack of any structure to the class, both grades and assigns assignments too late so we cant evaluate our progress throughout the course like we should, and going to discussion is like a completely different class as he and his tas are never on the same page. Never answers emails. Has no office hours. Very lazy professor no compassion for students
This professor is a nice person, but he is not a good professor. He says he will release grades and post assignments, but he never does, this only causes more stress for students. He does not answer emails and has canceled class at least 5 times this semester. We have assignments from September that are not graded as of December 1st.
Alex is a nice guy and very intelligent. However he is lazy and is terrible with putting in grades. He never responds to emails, holds office hours, and him and his TA's never communicate properly. Being the week of finals, I still dont know what my final grade in his class is, and havent received grades for assignments completed in September.
Took Diff Eq over the summer but had a blast. Highly relatable professor and enjoyed his course. Doesn't require you to purchase anything and strongly believes in free resources to succeed. Great lecturer and person overall. Do the work and go to office hours.
I had no idea what was going on in this class ever. There's no textbook, no TA, lectures aren't recorded, and he does not post class notes, so if you don't go to class you're screwed. The exams were take-home, but took DAYS to complete, and then he graded them harshly. Also, didn't release any grades until finals week.
While Dr. Macedo means well, his attitude and approach to the class pique his students negatively. He canceled class multiple times, wasn't clear what to study for the exams, and almost never posted any of his lecture material. Had to rely on my group and sometimes myself. On the bright side, his grade distribution is nice though!
Highly recommend this professor & class if you are needing calculus for a credit. Concepts are taught in a direct manner. Gives many opportunities to succeed (works out test problems in class & tests are open notes). There's a learning curve using MatLab but when I went to OH he was very helpful. Grades are released late, but it's not an issue imo.
In the beginning, the class was very easy. Then when we did the first exam, it was based on the concepts we barely learned about the day before. He takes a long time to grade assignments and exams. I still haven't received my final grade and the final exam is tomorrow. I don't recommend taking this professor.
I took calc previously, so this class wasn't too hard as a whole. His lectures are pretty straightforward and easy to follow as they're examples/questions that he works out with the class. But, his tests are significantly harder than the lectures, and he never alerts us about when assignments are published in Quest; he's also an inaccessible prof.
Alex is a very nice and funny guy, but he is very unorganized. We waited 4+ weeks to get our midterm grades back and he would never respond to my emails regarding them (even though he told me he would message me back as soon as he got home). If you take this class, just beware you won't have most of your grades back till the end of the semester.
Alex is a kind prof and his assignments are not difficult if you attend lecture, but his class is EXTREMELY disorganized. Grades aren't posted until a day before the final, when it's too late to fix it. He does not respond to emails and will post assignments weeks after saying he will, which caused a lot of students to miss them.
Funny yet very disorganized prof. The 2 first midterms were straightforward in content however the third exam was absolutely horrid since he didn't properly teach/prepare us. He's also EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED. It takes him a century to grade exams, so you won't know what you have in the class literally until the end of the semester.
I always understood the lectures and felt prepared for the first two midterms. However, Alex falls so far behind on grading that we didn't have time to prepare for the last midterm and didn't get our prelim grades until the day before the final. My advice would be to do the best on everything as a precaution for the last midterm.
While Alex is a great lecturer and passionate about calculus, this course was highly disorganized. Exams took months to be graded and homework assignments were often posted less than 48 hrs before the due date. Generous grading makes it doable to get an A, but the lack of structure is a large stressor in itself.
Professor Macedo is very knowledgeable but extremely disorganized. Exams took months to be graded. There is no required textbook but he has a published set of class notes on Overleaf that was always updated last minute. If you have questions, I recommend going to office hours because he was impossible to reach through email.
If you have no background in calculus, good luck! He teaches very quickly and in sort of an odd format. Although his grading scale is phenomenal and if you do all of the other work (very easy) then you should receive an A. His tests are always 2 parts and part 1 is with notes while the other is with a group he assigns. I learned absolutely nothing.
Professor Macedo was a breath of fresh air class-wise. I would recommend this class to anyone who needs math credit as it was made super easy even though the material was not the easiest. He did a great job of being lenient with grading and making sure we understood the topic. He says you need Matlab but we barely ever used it.
Alex genuinely is nice and funny, but the disorganization of this class made it a bit stressful for me. It took forever for things to be graded and assignments were almost never posted when he said they would be. That being said, if you pay attention and do the worksheets, you'll likely do well, especially if you've already taken calc before.
Alex is a very likable professor but not a good teacher. Myself and others often had a hard time following what he was trying to teach in class. He assigns problems to be done in groups that the majority of the time aren't on the midterms. He doesn't update grades until the end of the semester. He doesn't say when he assigns homework.
The class content itself was fairly easy however he was so disorganized! We did not know the scores for any of our midterm exams until 3 days before the final. Furthermore, he would rush teaching when we got close to exam time and so a lot of problems on the exam were things most of us had only seen maybe once before.
Prof seemed chill, although I didn't really go to class much. You get 3 HW drops and there are like 6 psets so if you're happy with your first 3 grades you don't have to do HW for the rest of the semester. He changed the final exam to fully take home so it was very low stress and easy to get a good grade. Very few materials provided online though.
Chill professor. Class wasn't bad for something as intimidating Business Calc.
If you get a choice of professor, I'd HIGHLY recommend choosing Macedo. Attendance is optional, and there is only 3 tests that are usually only 3 questions long and are word-for-word from class. He goes super slow and his lectures are easy to follow, and he also drops the lowest test score and some HW. Everyone loves him!!
I think having a background from high school is what made this class easy. Attendance is not mandatory, and the test reviews basically give you a pretty good preview into what the test will look like. That being said, there was zero structure to the class. The professor's teaching was difficult to follow and his canvas was not organized at all.
He is THE best calc professor ive taken in UT!! he makes everything so clear and easy to understand. Very funny and actually cares about his students!! take his class if you can
60% of the grade is determined by your scores on two midterms and an optional final. Need to have a good test average to get a good grade but it doesn't need to be perfect due to the other grades from homework and group worksheets.
Macedo is a really good teacher. He presents material in a super easy to understand way that makes it hard to do poorly in his class. But he is HORRIBLY DISORGANIZED. Constantly forgets to tell the class about assignments, changes due dates randomly, and RARELY updates his canvas announcements. Make sure you check all 3 HW sites DAILY for changes.
This class has a gradual ramp up in difficulty, starting out okay and then becoming very hard at the very end. Oh boy was the final (mostly preparing for it) hard. Still, this professor is hilarious, and his lectures are interesting, well-paced, and filled with examples to make sure everyone understands the material. Homework is not bad either.
Good at explaining concepts if you don't understand math but it was annoying how the tests only had a couple questions so just 1-2 mistakes could mess up your grade. So easy at the beginning I was like ??? but don't be overconfident and miss class like me who got karma (B+). Nice guy though and answers questions well.
One of the best Calc professors for 408R out there. He is an amazing lecturer and tends to make concepts pretty easy to understand and genuinely loves what he teaches. He lets you know exactly what will be on the tests/group work so all you need to do is put in the practice and you'll do great! He is pretty disorganized with grading though.
Amazing professor, you can tell he likes what he does. Lectures aren't bad at all as he explains a concept and does a few examples. As for discussion, they aren't bad but the TAs make it so unpleasant. There is little to no communication with the professor, so often times they also don't know what is going on and grades are displayed either.
Macedo is a nice guy but his way of teaching is not great. He for some reason does not record lectures even though he uses an iPad and he posts lecture notes like weeks after a lecture. The way he explains things is quite complicated. He at least does do extra office hours and example homework problems to help understanding
The class is not too difficult and the tests are very few questions, and one part of it is open note during discussion. He tells you what will be on the exam so you know what to study. The only problem is he doesn't record lectures/post notes and is VERY disorganized with grading. Also the TA's never knew what was going on during our discussions.
He is a nice guy, but the way he structures his class is very annoying. Lectures aren't recorded, grades are never put in, and the TA never knows what's going on. If you have not taken calc before in high school, this class will be difficult as he does not explain concepts well. Tests are few questions so mistakes hurt.
The professor is a really cool guy. I like the way he teaches, but is not very accessible (won't respond to your emails). Material is super general and easy concepts, but not attending classes will hurt you (especially if you didnt take calculus already). Midterms make or break your overall grade so make sure you know the material 100% to be good.
This professor is overall a nice and caring person, however his class structure can be annoying and frustrating. You have group worksheets every week that require discussion attendance. The TA never knows what is going on. You won't know your final grade in the class until right before the final. The tests are weighted heavy. Lecture are important
Attendance is not mandatory but he doesn't post the lectures or notes online. He puts in grades at the end of the semester so you do not know what grade you have throughout the semester. You need a basis of calculus to understand what is going on because he does not explain anything. I would not take this class again with the same professor.
If you can take another professor, do it. He doesn't communicate with the TA's, and the worksheets he assigns are random and don't have anything to do with what he teaches in lecture, so that's super frustrating. If you haven't taken calculus before, you probably won't pass, or you'll struggle a lot. He's a nice guy though, but not lenient.
The class is VERY disorganized, he never tells you when quest hws are due, no class schedule, things are graded super late. You have to attend class as he doesn't record lectures or post notes. However, I didn't take calc in hs and I got an A. He tells you what will be on the tests so as long as you study that you will be fine.
The course is very easy in itself. Professor Macedo is very nice and funny, however, he is very disorganized and inaccessible outside of class. He would tell us we had homework but would upload them randomly later on. The discussion assignments were very random but usually online. The tests were very easy and he would tell us what to review.
His exams are easy, just review what he tells you to. He can get disorganized by not uploading homework/other assignments when he claims he will, but he'll usually just push back the due date when that happens. If you get a 90+ on all the exams, you're exempt from the final, which I thought was really generous.
This is the first calculus class I have ever taken, and I got an A so that says something. His tests were straightforward and similar to the practice questions. I did not think the tests were the easiest, so if you haven't taken calculus before it may require more work. Do all practice problems he gives and redo them over and over again.
I was so relieved to be done. Macedo didn't grade a single assignment until after the final. You have no idea where you stand in the class grade-wise until it was over. He acts like a child in half the lectures, over-reviewing topics or whining about the students. His TA also didn't teach the same techniques. DO NOT RECOMMEND. the most unorganized
Most disorganized person ever I have no Idea what I have in this class The tests are hard and not like the test review. He does not put any grades in before Q drop therefore you're kinda screwed if you think you might need to. DO all of the homework because that's what I think might save the grades but then again you wont know because he wont grade
Horribly disorganized, essentially trying to teach myself class material because of the lack of learning resources we have access to. Grades aren't updated for over a month and they aren't close to accurate either, please do not take this class with this professor.
So disorganized it's actually incredible because this guy just plays videogames all night. Don't expect to get any of your grades back until a month after you turn them in. The way he explains calculus does not make any intuitive sense. The only reason I did well in this class was because I took Calc BC in HS and teacher was actually competent.
If you can get another instructor for Business calc TAKE THEM. Never updates grades, you will not know your grade until the last week of the semester because he cant be bothered to grade anything. He doesnt communicate so TA's are in the dark, many grading errors as a result of his own lack of attention. self-important and condescending.
He does not update the grades, there are no slides to follow and lectures are hard to pay attention to, he is unreachable outside of class, and he is very unclear about classroom expectations. Although the content is not hard if you pay attention, it is very different on tests than on all the worksheets.
Doesn't explain concepts well, unorganized, does not grade anything until the end of the semester, does not respond to emails, assignments are in groups and he doesnt care if people don't participate
Don't let his rating fool you. Macedo is witty, but jeez this guy is so unorganized, doesn't communicate with TAs, and doesn't grade anything until the last day of class. I failed almost every test but still passed the class somehow LOL. Just make sure to finish the HW, WS, and quest cause they do help. Just take any other proff for business calc.
Terrible calc prof, avoid at all costs. Nice guy w/ jokes but explains concepts weirdly & overly complex. Exams: 2-4 Qs. I failed all but passed due to weight of other assignments. Unreachable, too busy gaming to answer emails. No calc experience? You will struggle. Canvas grades inaccurate til post-semester. Save yourself the pain!
My biggest gripe about this class is that he doesn't post anything on canvas and doesnt grade fast, which made it difficult for my assignment schedule to include this class. Not terrible. Soft spoken at times. Includes a LOT of trig on his tests and assignments, so make sure your precal foundation is strong. Mine wasn't but I still swung an A-.
You know how some ppl can do math in their heads but can't explain their work? That's Macedo. You don't want a prof that can't explain how they got an answer. Pick literally ANYONE ELSE. Don't get your grade back until the LAST day of classes bc he's too busy gaming instead of his job (his words).Only reason I did well is bc I had my notes from hs
Macedo has a unique teaching style that can be hit or miss. While he's witty, his lectures can be disorganized and hard to follow. Definitely utilize unstuck ai and the free textbook to supplement the course. Stay on top of assignments, and you may luck out with a decent grade.
If you have taken Calculus in high school, this class is a breeze. He is very passionate about the material and enjoys teaching and engaging the class in lectures. He goes over what is on the tests, and is very honest about grading. If you have not taken calculus before, it is a little challenging because he lectures like you know it already.
Professor Macedo is a good professor for people with experience in the subject. He doesn't have a lot of work in class but goes through examples quickly in lectures, so you will need to work outside of class if you do not understand the material. Otherwise, a great class for people with a background in calculus.
Tests are usually straight from the review sessions, so always take advantage of review sessions. However, when he works through problems during class or review sessions he doesn't get straight to the point and goes in a zigzag. Good prof overall though. I would recommend
I came into this class not having any calculus experience but thrived in Macedo's class. He's a wholesome guy who is very honest about test expectations and genuinely wants his students to succeed (grading is SO lenient). If you pay attention to review sessions, I don't see how you can get anything less than an A. Highly recommend Macedo for calc!
Lecture notes were never posted, so you have to go to class to get the material. 1-2 group quizzes a week which weren't bad if you had a good group. Quest homework was due every week, but was always doable. Overall, good prof for this class, and the exam questions were almost identical to the review questions he would do during his review sessions.
exams practically mirror reviews. hate group quizzes but i had a great group. willing to give extension on HW if needed. willing to do alternative office hrs. EXTREMELY accommodating w/ my APD disorder. if u work w/ him, he'll work w/ u. he really does care about his students and he's freaking hilarious. i would for sure take him again if i could.
Exams are the same as reviews. Content was difficult to understand for me since it's been a while since I took calc 2 but the exams are quite easy. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are no notes or recorded lectures posted online. Prof also doesn't get straight to the point when explaining things during lectures but at least the exams are simple
Macedo does a good job at preparing us for exams. His exams are literally identical to the exam reviews, just with numbers changed. I found his lectures pretty bad though. I stopped showing up about half way through and just watched the exam reviews. He doesn't offer online notes or lecture recordings. Extremely unorganized, but he is a nice guy.
The class needed a bit more structure in my opinion because sometimes it was hard to figure out what we were learning and how it all ties together. His tests are identical to the review sessions we do the day before.
He is nice, but his lectures are extremely disorganized. Started off as a man of his word saying that examples used in class would be the problems on the test, but as the course progressed the test looked nothing like the homeworks or practice problems. If you took calculus in high school that will definitely help you with this course.
I didn't come in knowing any calc. If you go every class, study the material, complete assignments, and practice the review questions, you can get an A. His lectures go by fast & heavy. The TA's are super helpful for complex concepts (Carol = GOAT). The tests are like the reviews but harder. Lots of drops. He is really chill and grades SO lenient.
Professor Macedo was a great instructor! His witty lectures and clear answers to questions made calculus feel manageable. The resources were helpful, with lecture notes being the most useful. He could occasionally be confusing, but clarifying after class solved any issues. I highly recommend him!
Great professor, funny and understanding of students. I found the group quizzes and exam reviews extremely helpful. The class was a little disorganized though and I found myself lost in lectures - overall great professor though.
The concepts in this course are challenging, but Macedo is an excellent, engaging lecturer. The class is more time-consuming than when Meth taught it, but still very doable for an A. Macedo was receptive to student feedback (adding a midterm drop) and lenient about late work. He also often held extra review sessions on weekends.
Where do I even start... Just a terrible excuse of a professor. Lectures are very disorganized, convoluted, and makes concepts so much more complicated than they need to be. Also his grading are so subjective on the tests. He takes off points carelessly and there's a huge disconnect between him and the TAs.
His lectures are pretty confusing, but he's funny. Tests are very similar to reviews, except for the final, which was VERY different and harder than the review. Tests are weighted 25% each and are only out of 12 points. Arbitrarily takes off points so it's nerve wracking waiting for your grade. Also takes forever to grade. Good guy though
Dubious grading but listens to students. Two midterms + take home final count for 75% of the grade. Practice with proofs is the only way to succeed, there's no way to cheat out of this class so don't try it. Take time to learn the concepts and ask questions. Get to know someone in the class to check HW with and prepare for exams.
Vector Calculus by default is a very difficult subject, but he is a pretty good explainer. His lectures however were all over the place and disorganized. His exams are pretty relaxed though and he tells you what type of questions he will test you on. Overall, he's a great guy and he tries his best to make sure you do good.
Super chill guy. 3 exams and all of them he gives review sessions for which are very similar to the exams. It's a tough subject, but he makes it easier. His lectures are all over the place, but he makes sure you understand the structure of the tests and ensures you do well. Overall easier class.
Very interesting subject matter, but don't be fooled by the fact this is an "intro" class. The course started off really easy during the first couple weeks and eventually became insanely hard during the last 2 weeks. However, Macedo is an engaging lecturer and is very patient during office hours and review sessions. Don't expect an "easy A class".
Macedo's class isn't really hard. Lectures are unorganized and the concepts explained aren't clear. Homework is a step above examples. Exams aren't bad, he does a review session before every exam with examples of each type of problem. Sometimes he was moody and sassy. He did roast this one student in class for a stupid question which was funny.
Nice professor who clearly cares, but the class could be more organized. Some explanations could be clearer, and grading was generally a bit slow. Few practice problems are provided and no lecture recordings/online notes made it harder to review, but exams themselves were fair.
Very chill guy. Provides in-depth exam reviews before every test to make sure students succeed, and the tests follow exactly what was covered on the reviews. Also grades very leniently, only concerned with you understanding concepts rather than getting the calculations correct. Lots of group quizzes, though, it gets kind of annoying.
Interesting pure math class. Alex is a caring professor. Available outside of class to help with reviewing HWs and exams. Adjusted the workload based off of how the class was doing. Even though this was an intro class, it's nowhere from easy. The last 3rd of the class was insanely difficult. Have to be very familiar with a new way of thinking.
Pretty good class. The professor would go off on tangents at times. The funniest part was when he openly admitted to talking about nothing for the past 15 minutes. The class is interesting though besides that. The test reviews are carbon copies of the test so you always know what the test is going to be except for the equations or numbers changed.
Great prof, he explains concepts clearly and he cares about his students, holds review sessions before every exam which cover basically the same exact problems that you will see on the exam.
Macedo had great lectures! Weekly quizzes were done on your own time with a group. Exams were the same as practice problems in his review with slight differences. Lectures were not recorded so make sure you go to class. HW problems were on Quest and there are no makeups if you missed one. Overall, really nice prof and great class!
Had him for vector calc, he was great. Number theory? Not at all. He's super disorganized and goes on random tangents during lecture. Even if you go to lecture you have to self-study the course essentially. Grades everything harshly too, 3 exams worth 72% of your grade (all in-person). Don't take him for 328K, wish I had stuck with Zach Miner.
Alex is the goat.. he's super empathetic with his students, as long as you show a lot of effort and study. His lectures are super scattered, and you can tell he can get overwhelmed very easily. As long as you ask questions, he is very accomodating to pushing back deadlines in case you have a lot of stuff going on.
