Wheaton's biggest mistake was letting Bolyanatz go. I just thought there should be a tribute to him here. The most humane, thoughtful, caring, and insightful professor I had at Wheaton.
three kids in the college age - so he relates well. read a chapter a week, take a mini quiz on it starting at the beginning of each week. 3 exams - gives you the questions the first day. hard teacher but he makes himself available to students whenever possible. he kept me awake at 7:30am!
Tough class but great teacher...not a wacko liberal pushing views at you. He talks about the material and that's it. He's very helpful if needed and knows his stuff very well. Highly recomnended.
great teacher, a lot of fun. great course
Probably the best teacher at COD. Loves his profession and it shows. Education would be much better if all educators were like him.
Great teacher and guy. Has kids in college so can relate to us. Hard in grading, but easy to understand and Essay questions are given out on the first day for all 3 tests. You do have to read for the weekly quizes, but he gives a lot of points options to recieve great grades.
This teacher was one of my best teachers at cod. He made class fun and interesting all the time and you can tell he is very passionate about his job. Tests were easy. He tells you everything that is on them at the beginning of the quarter.
Grrreeeaaattt.
wow he is great! you dont need to watch the clock in his class you will be socked how fast the class goes. her really is a wonderful guy.
yea man he is the coolest teacher in the world he rocks my socks (white socks that is) yea teach go sox. cali is boring.
dude hes so cool n he makes the class real easy. definetely recommend him to anyone

VERY DIFFICULT. TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE. PLACES A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON GEOGRAPHY ON THE TESTS. GREAT LECTURE. DONT GET ME WRONG, HES A GOOD TEACHER, BUT HE DOES NOT FIT MY STYLE OF LEARNING. IF YOU ARE REALLY INTERESTED IN ANTHROPOLOGY, TAKE HIM, BUT IF YOU'RE NOT, CHOOSE ANOTHER TEACHER.
Soooo much fun. In class experiments are a lot of fun, videos are kinda lame, easy points though. Tests are pretty hard, just study for the essays, they're the most important part of his class. Great teacher other than that.
Dr. Bolyanatz is a great teachers. He shows a great deal of respect towards his students. Quizes are easy yet his tests can be challenging when it comes to the essays. One key thing to remember is read, if you don't you will be hard-pressed to pass. I would take him again if I needed another Social Science credit.
HE IS A GOOD TEACHER. I LIKE HIS TEACHING STYLE. IN ORDER TO GET GOOD GRADES IN QUIZES ..YOU HAVE TO READ THE TEST...BUT THE BEST PART IS U CAN USE YOU NOTES. VIDEO WRITE UPS ARE EAST POINTS. HIS TESTS ARE NOT BAD. U WILL KNOW WHAT WILL BE ON THE TEST BEFORE HAND.
He is a pretty cool teacher. You have to goto class to even get a C if you get an A you might as well reapply to MIT. Has Must read material for easy enough weekly quizes. The Geography parts of the exams are easy point and you even get to see half the multiple choice questions before the exams. you will learn
He's a good teacher but you have to put the effort into class. Geography is easy if you go to his website and download the map and list of places. He goes over all the essay questions during class so all you have to worry about is the other half of the quiz which is on lecture. He is a good teacher and cares about what he does.
Bolyanatz is truly a great professor. If you show up, read the chapters and study you'll do fine in his class. He made anthropology as fun as you can make it. Not to mention that his videos are awesome.
He is a great professor. He is smart, has tremendous knowledge, funny, and most of all he respects his students. Quizes are easy if you read text and make your own note(Q's are open note), and tests are fair if you study map and essay, which he gives you the answers during class and on the website. His videos are awesome too. Highly recommended!
His movies are pretty boring... he is a pretty nice teacher tho. he is fair ... all you really got to do it study the map for the test and the eassy which are given in advant people!!! (map and essay Q's).. try to pay attention in class to the little details ... and you willl but fine!
bet the ranch! pay little attention you'll do fine.
awesome teacher. makes everthing interesting and even will help you pick out other anthro classes if you are interested. i really recommend taking his classes!
This teacher is awesome. Very helpful with questions, he goes over reviews to help students with quizes/exams. Go over vocab words before quiz (very helpful!)
great teacher. very nice guy. answers all questions. a sox fan, so remember that. even tho the cubs r better. thinks the bears and the chargers will be in the superbowl, so agree with him. and remeber, dont call his movies lame. call him lame all u want, even tho i disagree. but dont mess wit the mans movies. good luck.
He was a great teacher. Followed his sllybus. Same thing every week and some weeks you get to watch a video. So pay attention to the movies and take lots of notes because it really REALLY helps with the tests and the quizes he gives every week!
Dr. Bolyanatz makes the class very interesting- it was very challenging, but i learned a lot.
As long as you keep up with the reading and take good notes you'll do fine. He's a very fair teacher and pretty funny too. I'd recommend this teacher to anyone who is willing to read every week and go to class.
He is awesome!! But there are a few caveats: 1. Show up to class and take notes. I know he says that he doesn't care if you show up but the more notes you have, the better you are off for the exams which can be really tough! 2. Make sure you study the geography! 3. Always ask questions before the quizes! Good Luck! :)
I just started the summer semester with him, and I think waking up every morning to be at his class by 9 am, is worth it. He's enthusiastic, funny, and a very good looking older man. He keeps things interesting and really knows what he's talking about. I definitely recommend him. It's a lot of information to learn, but he makes you want to!
Very helpful. Always answers questions. Funny and honest (I especially like his "Life Tips"). Presents unbiased arguments. Very knowledgeable. He has real experience in field work. I actually enjoy class!
Awesome guy. So interested in his work and wants everyone to know everything that he knows. DONT TAKE HIM IN THE SUMMER! It's too much information at once and it's so interested about what he talks about its better to make it spread out. HIS VIDEOS ARE AWESOME! =D
Not a bad class, just a lot of information for a summer class. The maps are not as bad as he makes them out to be on the first day :) If you study hard and go to class you will be fine...maybe :)
He's hilarious, and very helpful. As long as you take notes, read the chapters, and study his maps, you should be okay. But beware, his tests are pretty hard! O, and don't take this as a summer course...WAY too much info. for an 8 week class. You'll end up pulling your hair out
No Comments
awsome teacher keeps u interested and applies anthopology to everyday life. i took him in the summer(dont take this class in the summer) it was alot of information for just a few weeks but he made it interesting and made u want to learn hes awsome take him if u can.
Professor is fun but lectures are a little dry. Make sure you pay attention to his movies.
Great teacher good lectures no papers. test composition maps, multiple choice, essay. easily bribed with dark chocolate.
Hilarious, interested in the subject matter. His enthusiasm rubs off on you. YOU MUST keep up with the readings. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
This is the best class I have taken so far in college. He is an awesome prof! so funny and really loves the subject. I had no interest in anthropology before this class but he really made it fun! TAKE THIS CLASS AND PROF!
One word to describe him would be; inspirational! Has a lot of enthusiasm when he teaches. He will make you look forward to coming to class. His sense of humor rocks. He also has priceless "life lessons". He's extremely helpful and really wants you to understand this subject. Take him & be prepared for a drastic life change-He's simply AMAZING!!!
This class is always exciting!!!
I loved this class like crazy!!! This teacher is soo hilarious and extremely helpful. He really wants you to succeed. This is a class that you'll be thrilled to enter. He's very enthusiastic and his "life lessons" will rock your world. He's very open-minded and did I mention-GREAT!!! I took him a few years back & till this day I still remember him!
Funny, funny, funny guy!!! Be prepared to actually LEARN something in his class and beyond. He's extremely enthusiastic, which makes you more interested in this subject. He has a looooot of passion for this subject, which makes one love coming to class. I took most of his classes offered at COD and I'm gonna register for one more! Fun class!!!!!!!
He's terrific! Smart, energetic, and fun. I loved the class. His enthusiasm kept me awake early in the morning. If you don't understand something he always makes himself available to his students. Extremely helpful and wants you to learn. I wish there were more teachers like him, so that learning wouldn't be an issue =). I HIGHLY recommend him.
Bolyanatz is the best anthropology teacher. I liked his class so much, I wanted to fail it just so I could take it with him again. Very hard to fail his class. Do yourself a favor and sign up for this teacher.
Loved the professor and class...no complains. He gives 10-question quiz once a week on chapter. There are videos that you watch that comes with a easy worksheet-easy A. Lastly there are 3 exams which is a mix of geography, class notes, video q's, quiz q's, and an essay question. NO HOMEWORK; just weekly quizes, video sheets, and the 3 exams;easy A.
Very nice teacher. He jokes a lot and makes the class enjoyable. However, his lectures are boring, especially videos. Quizzes and tests are hard. You have to read the book a lot. He doesn't really give much information before the test. If you are not into Anthropology, don't take his class because you will find it very boring and not interesting.
This class is my world! Took his class 2 years ago (2005).....good times man!!! he kept me awake pretty darn early. Unforgettable professor. I'm no anthro major, but he sure did get me into the subject. He's very coool straight up! Loved him and his class. DO TAKE HIM!!!
good guy, very helpful. class is difficult and takes a lot of effort to do well. i think i ended up reading the whole book bc u have to or you won't do good. don't take if you don't wanna put in the effort bc the class covers complex material. 10 quizzes, 5 video write ups, 3 tests all inc. essay.
Well,he seems like a very respectful, intelligent person. The class is a bit hard, and he makes it as easy as possible. Right now I am a kind of nervous because the first test was very hard, but you must work hard, study and pay attention in class since he goes over most of the essay questions covered in test. Open note quizzes, but still, study!!!
He is awesome! I took his 1100 class at 8 am fall '07 and he kept me awake the entire time. Reading is a MUST, but he tells you exactly what's going to be on the tests, and gives you the 6 potential essay questions at the begining of the year, i also took his Evo. psych. class.that was TOUGH but still very interesting, Take this professor, he's good
Interested in Anthro? Psych? Or, if you just want to learn from one of the sharpest profs at COD...this is your guy. I've taken four classes with him, and he does not disappoint. Caution: If you're looking for "easy," forget it. But, if you like a challenge, your brain will get a great workout in any class you take with Dr. B.
He's silly and slightly corny but he's very passionate about what he teaches and he's a total expert. He manages to make his lectures and the subject very interesting with social experiments in addition to the way he lectures. And even though he makes you read the book it's not so bad it's an easy read.
Super interesting class. Teacher is fantastic. The tests are pretty hard but if you pay attention in class they are entertaining to complete. The teacher is really funny and he actually works as an Anthropologist in New Ireland so he knows what he's talking about. If you wanna get on his good side bring him some coffee!
EVOLUTIONARY PSYCHOLOGY IS MY WORLD!! I didn't think it was necessary to type too much, as you can tell Professor Bolyanatz is very popular!! SIGN UP WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!
I took anthro and evolutionary psychology with Dr.B. his classes are very interesting but difficult. you have to read a chapter every weekend and have a quiz the first class of the week, every week. his tests are very hard. show up to class, and study a lot for tests and you should be fine.
His summer course is very difficult. You HAVE to attend class and really stay on top of everything to pass. He is very picky about grading and you must come to class prepared. Even though the class was difficult, he is a great teacher and puts things into perspective. I have really learned a lot from him. I would definitely recommend him!
If you have a choice, sign up for this teacher. His name should be in the very definition of a good teacher. He is engaging, challanging and fair. His lectures are well-structured and always take the point home. He makes the difficult material easy to follow. You have to read a lot of material, but Duh... If only my math teachers were as "into it."
honestly his class is harder then others say you actually do have to work He has like 4 exams that include map locations, essays, multiple choice, and matching. He also has a quiz at the beginning of every week that consisted of stuff you will go over that week. He is a great guy, i liked him, just not the class
AMAZING TEACHER! Soooo inspirational...he really got me interested in this subject. Beware though because his class is challenging; do the work and you should be good-to-go. Always willing to help you succeed in his class and in life in general...absolutely phenomenal man!
Great guy...really knows his stuff. I would take him again just because his passion in this subject is always refreshing and enlightening. I was always entertained in his class through his teaching methods. Highly recommend him for those who want to learn. This man is a true treasure in this college.
Very fair and helpful, easy to talk to about class or life. I have taken three classes from him and would take more.
This is an amazing teacher! I just finished the spring 09 semester with an A. He gives you all the opportunity possible to do well. Read from the book and take very good notes not only from the reading but from his lectures and you'll do fine. Does include geography on his tests but gives you all the places before hand. Take him and you wont regret
15% comes from documentary assignments and about 10% from essay questions covering the lecture. Most of the grade is earned from reading the book, but I thought a lot of the material sounded like bleeding heart drivel. He can be kind of corny, but he at least tries to be interesting.
I thought that Mr. B was a very passionate teacher. The class consists of 3 exams, 15 opennote quizzes, and 4-5 video write ups. The class can be boring sometimes but I thought that the topics that were discussed were interesting. Overall, u should take him if u have to take anthropology 1100.
He is very passionate about anthropology and makes the class interesting. The exams aren't super easy especially the map part. Other than that, the course work is not too bad. There are weekly quizzes but they are open note.
the tests are rediculously hard. my class average on the first test was 53.....
He's super helpful, he makes class interesting, & he's an overall extremely nice guy. He's very passionate about what he teaches. He doesn't assign h/w, just weekly readings with a short quiz on them on Mondays, but he gives you ALL reading/exam info & dates in the syllabus, which is really helpful. I definitely recommend taking his class!
Bolyanatz's class is fairly difficult, but very easy compared to other Anthro teachers at COD. Gives a quiz for every reading assignment (only applies top 10 scores toward final grade), lectures are given on test essay questions. Attendance not mandatory, but you'll want to go to get essay ? answers. Must know world geography to do well on tests!
Evolutionary Psych is an innovative, up-and-coming science that will broaden your understanding of psychology and all its realms. Dr. Bolyanatz is a handsome, intelligent and humorous person who loves teaching and I loved being his student. EP at cod counts towards life science creds, too. -Take it-
His class is very interesting. The exams are intense, but until they come around the class is pretty easy. There is a quiz each week on the weekly reading, though he drops your lowest five quiz scores.
A really wonderful teacher. His classes can be tough, but never unfair. Genuinely funny and as a practicing anthropologist, he has the real-world experience needed to make everything interesting and understandable.
Great man. Great teacher. Best teacher I have had in my life... ya hes that good. His class is pretty difficult tho. You need to read each chapter before class to succeed. I took the 8 week class so maybe thats why it was so fast paced. But he was a lot of fun and i would definitely recommend his class. Be prepared to study tho.
He is one of the great, kind, helpful, TRUE professor in COD. His tests could be tough though but you have plenty of chances to prove yourself!
Greattttttttt
If you are looking for easy, do not take is class. However, if you want some of the most solid teaching you can come by at COD, take Bolyanatz. This man is passionate and will work extremely hard to help you distill the concepts. The information flows from him, due to his experience in the subject, and his deliveries are engaging and entertaining.
Of all of the classes that I have taken at COD, his class has taught me the most. His passion for the material & experience in the field helps to make the material interesting. You will have to read & study a bit, but don't let that deter you. If you're looking to get something out of your college experience, you should definitely take his class.
He is excellent! He is super interesting and has great explanations for everything. He is also really funny. Not the easiest professor, his test questions really make you think sometimes. You have to read the book because there is a quiz on every chapter. Nonetheless, I highly recommend him!
BEST teacher i have ever had, not just college, best throughout all my years. Class is easy because teacher keeps you interested. Ive never actually learned so much from a course, and hey thats what were supposed to be doing, not just worrying about our grade. this class made me realize that! TAKE THIS TEACHER!
AWESOME TEACHER! I have him this semester and he is very fun and easy going, loves to have fun in class.=D &He is very clear about what he teaches. &He will answer your questions throughly if you do not understand anything. The class isn't paticulaly easy(You HAVE to read da text book, and you HAVE to study for the exams), but he curves grades.=DD
Great professor! Yes, you do have to actually read the textbook for the weekly quiz, but for our class he allowed open notes. He's also great at breaking down concepts and clearly demonstrates ideas through classroom examples. You can tell he's passionate about the subject, and he keeps the class interesting!
Awesome teacher! If your going to take anthro...take this teacher!!
this is the greatest teacher i've ever had. the work is laid out for you, its up to you to put in the effort. i won't lie the tests can be kinda hard but ASK QUESTIONS he has no problem answering them..and he's funny! you shouldnt have any probs with mr. b :]
GREAT teacher. He knows what he's doing. Very educated, clear, and obviously loves to teach. He keeps the class entertained with interesting and funny stories. If you're reading this, you MUST take one of his classes. Great experience. Tests aren't too difficult if you actually study.
Dr B is def an awesome teacher. He's constantly joking around and his class is far from boring. But his tests are insane. You need to know 20 places on a map, a 30 pt essay question, 10 old quiz questions, and 25 multiple choice. There's curves on everything. Quizes are only on book material. STUDY for tests !!! I would def recommend Dr B tho!
Dr. Bolyanatz was a great teacher. His quizzes are a bit tough because of the wording, but he grades on a curve and if you apply yourself he can see it! He has a lot of stories and uses great demos to help the visual learners. I really enjoyed his class!
Dr. Bolyanatz was a great teacher! His quizzes are a tough because of the wording, he uses great demos in class to help visual learners and works with a curve. He always said he wanted to be the trainer you hated because they pushed you - wants you to get your moneys worth. Overall, I enjoyed attending his class - he has great stories too!
Mr. B was by far one of the best professors and teachers I have ever had. He really works well with those who need that little extra help. You have to read the textbook every week so make sure to get it because the quizzes that are once a week come straight from the book. Also, go to class since his tests are mostly stuff he covers in lecture. He d
Not really easy to get a good grade. Didn't like his grading policy(make students compete each other). Your grade will be based on your classmate's approach to class. It won't be that easy.
He is one of the best teachers I've had. He is clear, concise, and as LONG AS YOU STUDY you will excel. He is charismatic, and has an obvious passion. Only criticism would be he doesn't ask ENOUGH on the tests; most is just to "check" you read/attended class. Overall, AMAZING professor. Highly, highly recommend.
One of the best college professor's I've ever had. Dr. B is clear, engaging, humorous, and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures and highly recommend him to any prospective student.
HANDS DOWN BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD AT COD!
BEST TEACHER EVER! hes really nice and funny and makes class very interesting. All quizes are open notes and tells you what questions will be on exams.
His class is extremely interesting for many reasons. First,he is an anthropologist who has traveled to many remote places in the world, his experience helps students understand what anthropology is, he is bilingual, and is subjective to any topic. Take Anthropology with Dr. Bolyanatz you will enjoy his class.
Awesome teacher. Don't take this class if you're not going to be able to read the textbook chapter each week. I would avoid missing class, because the lectures are crucial come test time. Getting an A isn't easy, but with the curve, it can be done!
So interesting and free spirited! He taught more than a textbook covers.
Great Professor. If you put in the effort to his class you will walk out with a good grade, a great learning experience, and an enjoyable semester in class. Recommend to anyone taking Anthro.
Very Helpful Professor. I am currently in his class, Language and Culture, and am having struggles, but he is willing to do anything to help me out! He is very knowledgeable in anthropology and knows what he is talking about.
Really great professor. Extremely knowledgeable, very accessible, funny, and enormously understanding of a student's academic situation. However, be warned: READ. THE. BOOK. He has quizzes every Monday, and the tests are fairly fortuitous. I dropped the class because I had overloaded my schedule, but I would absolutely take him again in the future.
I've never rated a professor before, but this guy totally deserves the acknowledgment and gratitude. If you're concerned about the possible degree of tedium associated with an Anthropology class, take it with Alex and you won't have to worry because he will undoubtedly keep you alert. Simply incredible, enjoyable, and exceptionally intriguing.
By far this is the best professor I've ever had. I took his Cultural Anthropology class this past semester (Spring 2013) and loved every minute. If you read the book you should have no problems passing the class. He makes every chapter of the book extremely interesting and uses great examples for teaching. AWESOME PROFESSOR!!
I thought this course would be easy, however it proved me wrong. However, Professor Bolyanatz. is not just a good teacher...he has a gift for teaching this class and making himself available in order for his students to meet their personal goals.
He's a great teacher! Really explains things so very well! I've never had a teacher be able to explain things as well as him! However, unless you like prepping for 6 different possible essay questions for each exam then don't take this class.
Very interesting class! The lectures are fun and entertaining. There is a quiz every single week on the chapter reading from the textbook which adds up. The tests are pretty ridiculous.. you have to prepare 6 essays per test w/o notes..but it's a really good class. he curves grades at the end of the year btw!
Dr. B is a very good teacher. You need the book b/c you read every chapter for weekly open note quizes(15).The tests are hard b/c you have to prepare for 6 essay questions and you will find out day of test which essay to write w/o notes. But he curves the grade A LOT at the end. If you have a C, he'll bump it up to an A! And the lectures are funny!
Great teacher, I learned a lot. There is a quiz every week but if you read the chapter and take some notes it is really easy. Really funny guy and knowa his stuff. Tests are kinda hard but as long as you attend class you'll be fine. Deff recommend him and would deff take him again.
This guy is legit. He is a great teacher & on top of that he is influential and passionate about his work. The class in not difficult - all you need to do is READ. Take notes on the vocal in the book & you're good to go. The test aren't hard just study maps & you'll be fine. The MC isn't difficult either. Outline you essay questions & its an easy A
He is very off topic most of the time during lectures he talks about his trip to Ireland continually and when it comes to exam he doesn't do a great job covering the subjects that are going to be on the exam. He makes anthropology sound like rocket science especially when he makes us write essay during the exams.
I give the guy credit for trying, but the weekly quizzes are ridiculous. You HAVE to read each chapter of the book if you want to pass. And have fun writing out 6 essay questions for each exam. Tests are near impossible. This was by far my most time comsuming class since I started at COD. Beware!
This class takes work. You can skim chapters but you will need notes for the quizes. The way he words questions kinda sucks. The tests are easier cause its mostly what you have already done. He explains each essay option well and gives plenty of time to go over anything. Funny, interesting class. Guy knows his stuff. Don't take as a blow off cass.
This is definitely not a blow off class, however if you put work in then you will get a good grade. Simple as that.
Great personality, funnysarcastic. Incredibly specific about his expectations. There is no reason not to pass with flying colors. Will make you work. Expect to read a chptr each week and TAKE NOTES. If you are interested, this will be an awesome class. If you're not, maybe consider a softer teacher. Doesn't take attendance but SHOW UP to get an A.
Great professor! He is very organized in his lectures and lets you know what he expects on the exams. There are quizzes once a week on the reading which you will do well on if you read and take notes. His exams are hard but he gives you all the information you need to know. He is very funny and interesting to listen to. Very willing to help too!
This class is probably the hardest I've taken so far here at COD. I've learned those who are introverts or better off working by alone, enjoy and do well in the class. He teaches based off introverts. Quizzes are once every week and are so difficult. You HAVE to take notes. He's a great man. But if you're not a great test take DON'T take his class
DO NOT TAKE THE 8 WEEK BECAUSE IT'S CRUCIAL. YOU HAVE TO READ EACH CHAPTER AND COMPLETE A QUIZ REGARDING IT EVERY TIME.
Gives awesome lectures just make sure you're taking detailed notes they'll be essential on the tests. Anything he writes on the board will in some way be important. Ten question quiz every week over each chapter. Lets you use notes on the quizzes not tests. Class isnt mandatory but strongly recommended. Its not a blow off class so take it seriously
So much home work, quizzes every week. But I loved this class. The people in the class, and th eprofessor himself really made it worth wile. Be open and FUNNY in class, laugh at corny jokes, the fun will last throughout the semester! He is great with providing feedback and will help any of his students that comes for help.
You have to memorize the map and read a lot to pass the multiple options part in the exams. He doesn't do a great job covering the subjects. He is off topic most of the time trying to let you know what he expects on the essay's part of the exams which is the most confusing section. It is a funny and enjoyable class, That's all.
Although this class was a challenge, I enjoyed every minute of it, I think if I had any other teacher I would not have enjoyed it. He made all the concepts very easy to understand by teaching lessons that are interactive. Quiz every week (you can use your notes) Exams were tough but just study a good amount & pay attention in class! Not impossible
Just horrible.
This professor is great! His class is tough but super interesting. If you're a dedicated student you'll have no problem. He actually gives his students their rank in his class. I was ranked 3rd and got a B, so I could only imagine where the rest of the class was. He gives open note quizzes every Monday. If you want a real college course take him!!
I signed up for this class last minute and did not know anything about anthro coming into it. He assigned a chapter from the textbook to read each week and we had an open note quiz at the begging of each week on said chapter. The 3 exams were difficult, you have to study and be aware of vocab terms. I never read the book and got a B.
I would highly recommend taking anthro with this teacher. He is super passionate about anthro and makes dull topics fascinating. Reading the book is essential for open note weekly quizzes. I liked how he told us what to expect on tests. I looked forward going to this class. This is one of the few classes where I will retain the info for years after
The material is interesting and Professor Bolyanatz has real life experiences that he shares throughout the course. However, if you have test anxiety or if you are not a disciplined student when it comes to reading and studying, then this class is probably not for you. If you want to be challenged and learn something then take the class.
Prof. B's problems are primarily within finals and quizzes. Almost all test questions are very vague or ambiguous to the point you cannot comprehend and wrap your head around which leaves you guessing what you've studied for.. Both tests alike, I consider his written examinations to complex compared to different profs. I'd rather take then him.
Solid guy who goes out of his way to make a (sometimes) boring subject much more interesting through storytelling and in-class demos. As cool as he is, the class is honestly pretty tough. His exams are what really comes into play; there are 3 exams which require lots of studying and preparation. He curves the grades, though. Read and take notes.
One of the best professors I have had in my schooling career. I took him for my first semester at CoD and I am super glad I did. During the first week, he gave tips on how to study and good habits to form for the class. I was able to apply his tips to other courses. He singlehandedly improved my grade point average by a point or so!
Phenomenal professor. You can tell how passionate he is about the course/subject matter just by his lectures, which are always entertaining and informative. Quizzes on Mondays over reading, always easy stuff, bit tedious though. Very accessible outside of class and super understanding.
Bolyanatz's class is a pretty hard class. In the beginning you don't really understand what is going on in the book and the quizzes come back and your like what the hell. The answers are in the book but you have to actually read carefully and pay attention to the major parts as well as the minor and the examples given are the most important. :)
Very good lectures, fairly hard class. You have to put in the time to read and take notes for quizzes each Tuesday. Definitely not a blow off class, highly recommend showing up to each class since most questions are based off things he says during lecture. Overall Mr. B is a awesome, hilarious teacher, would take again.
This class was hard for me, even as a 4.0 GPA student. To do well, you should attend each lecture, take good, detailed notes, and read the chapters each week (and not skim through them). Exams are tough, but weekly quizzes with notes are a breeze. Mr. Bolyanatz is a very funny guy and has lots of cool personal stories relating to anthropology.
After taking the course I'd have to say: Yes you have to read every chapter and take notes if you want to do well on the OPEN NOTE QUIZZES. Tests are really not that hard if you do that. If you come class pretty much everyday and aren't a complete moron its an easy A. College isn't supposed to be a cake-walk and this class pushes u to open u mind
Dr. Bolyanatz is funny, knowledgeable, and cares for his students. This class is involved and definitely challenging. There are open-note quizzes every week along with 3 exams. He expects a lot from his students, so it is important to devote time to this class. His lectures are great and he has many great stories to share. Amazing professor!
Only good about Bolyanatz is his lectures aren't boring. His classes are absurdly tough for an anthro class. To do even decent, you need to attend each lecture, read the chapters thoroughly, and take detailed notes. Even with heavy reading and memo, exams and quizzes are still extremely tough. There are far better teachers for anthro than Bolyanatz
Great teacher! He cares about your well doing in class. Attendance is not mandatory but it's super important if you wanna pass the class. You HAVE to read the book to pass! But honestly, it was a super easy read and kind of interesting. Quizzes are open note and the tests are super easy. There is no reason why you shouldn't pass if you're not lazy.
I really enjoyed this professor's lectures, as he has a wonderful sense of humor and a very organized structure for the class. However, for me personally, this class was taken as a general ed. course and took up majority of my allowed study time, even more so than the time I had allocated for my majors courses. It was extremely time consuming...
Professor B is an all around great professor and I would recommend him to everyone. He is very fair and only has the best intentions for his students. His course and lectures are extremely fascinating and he is very energetic, also has super interesting personal stories about his Anthropology experiences. You need to show up to get a good grade.
i dislike this class so much. Don't get me wrong, Prof. B is a cool guy. The only thing he lectures on are the essay questions. The quizzes are hard considering they're over an entire chapter (30 ish pages). I have a 4.0 GPA and i'm a hard working student and this class was hard for me. even when I took long, thoughtful notes I still got a 7/10.
I really enjoyed his lectures, he definitively knows his stuff. Very knowledgeable, easy to understand. Great personality. There are chapter quizzes from the textbook every week, but are open note. No homework other than reading the book. Tests are a lot, but easy to study for (he has all the material needed on blackboard). Would take again.
One of my favorite classes so far. You need to read a chapter a week, and there will be a 10 question quiz on each chapter. and you need to prepare very well for each of the three exams, but everything you need is on blackboard. Would take again, but was definitely a very challenging class.
Dr. Bolyanatz is an amazing teacher! He's caring, witty, and entertaining. Each week there is a 10 question quiz on a chapter that weve read. There are 3 exams that he prepares you well for, but are quite hard. In short, its a HUGE amount of work, but I absolutely loved it. Attend class every day, ask questions, and use his office hours.
Very good lecturer. Humorous and interesting. Don't miss a class. Testing is very hard. 3 major exams that require a lot of memorization and terminology over 6 chapters each. He covers all the material very deeply and gives good warning as to the requirements needed to pass the course, but you'll have to work very hard to earn it.
Mr. Bolyanatz is the man! He truly cares about his students and has office hours in case you need help with something. Open-note Quizzes every week based on the readings which are not that bad as long as you take good notes. Make sure you show up to class if you want to do good on the 3 exams. Overall, be ready to spend a lot of time and effort.
The eight week course was very overwhelming. You have to study very hard and take good notes. Overall Alexander is a very good teacher he is funny and he explains everything very well. I would highly recommend him.
AWESOME teacher. Classes tend to be a little bit intense since there's an open notes quiz every class but to be honest, they help you to understand the lecture, so If you like doing nothing in class, this might not be your best option 'cause yes, you have to pay attention, yes you have to read the book and yes, you have to take notes in class.
Most time consuming class ever when it dont have to be. The professor makes this class extremely difficult purposely. I've taken sociology & psychology passing both with a A but somehow failed this class yet I spent the most time on this class. Will repeat again to get an A just not with this instructor. Only 1 minute per question on quizzes. Joke
His class is almost like an accelerated physics or Math course. (VERY tough.) But his sense of humor, interesting stories about his trips to New Ireland and teaching style pretty much make up for it. (Which really makes you enjoy all the work, in the end.) He's also great one on one. (And will help you out when you have questions.)
Professor Bolyanatz is amazing! Everything you need to succeed is provided on a daily basis. Very specific on what you should study and always provides necessary requirements for the tests. Hes always available and very enthusiastic about his profession. I started rough and with his guidance and tips hope to end with a B!KEY #Read and #AskQuestions
Looking for a course that'll strengthen your arguments & reason, especially for politics, religion, or just how humans take in the world & respond? THIS IS IT. This course is PACKED with highly interesting info. Dr. B is super engaging and easy to listen to. He loves his job, & it clearly shows. However, this course demands lots of time and study.
Tests take a loooot of prep but the lectures were great and the textbook was interesting.
It is a class where there are a lot of lectures but you'll have a lot of fun if you give a chance. I thought he was a great professors. The first week he tells you how the class is and you have to put in some work. If you pace yourself and write stuff he writes on the board then you'll pass
I did not know what Anthropology was until I took this class. He was very understanding, just talk to him. He does set you up for success, but you need to be the one to put in the work. 10 question quizzes with notes, drops the lowest 4 quizzes. The tests are difficult, but study because he literally puts all the answers online. Take it w/ him!
Follows the syllabus & his class is well organized. 1 quiz/week on the current chapter - notes allowed. However, I think his exams were unnecessarily hard considering u have to memorize 6 essay answers 1 of which is picked at random on the day of exam. But he spends his lectures answering those q's so if you show up & take notes u will be good.
loved him, makes class super entertaining and you can tell he loves what he does. if you show up and read youll do great
took him for evolution of human sexual behavior and this was by far the best class I've taken and he made it so fun and interesting. He is so good at what he does and makes the class comfortable (because sometimes there are strange things that come up that would make others uncomfy) He's fun he makes the class enjoyable
Loved taking this class, it was really hard at times with quizzes every Monday and having to learn every single essay question for exams, but I definitely got the use of the textbook that paid for. Professor made class enjoyable with stories and jokes. I learned a lot of material this semester.
hes a really nice and sweet teacher. he reminds me of a uncle. if you easily stressed this class will have you up all night. the topics and the conversations that are had in this class are and that Is what's going to make you wanna stay in the class
Professor B is an awesome teacher to take for Anthropology. He explains everything very well and is hilarious during his lecture. Not once have I zoned out and stopped paying attention. He is quick at responding to emails and grading quizzes. Tuesdays are chapter quizzes and by Thursday, you should get your quiz back.
Overall, a great guy and professor. Really funny and makes lectures fun. Also responds to emails fast. The most important thing to know, is that the tests are not easy. Especially the essay portion. There are 6 ?s each unit and you do one, but dont know which til the day of the exam. TONS of info to remember and it can get quite overwhelming.
Hes a nice guy and puts in a lot of effort in his teaching. Dont expect to get an A though. Absolutely no extra credit.
Anthropology is not the most fascinating topic, however, professor Bolyanatz's lectures are informative yet entertaining! His classes are interesting enough to keep you engaged and his in class demonstrations/ thought experiments are enjoyable. One thing to note is that you do have to work for your grade. You MUST read the book + weekly quizzes.
Dr B is a solid professor. He tells a lot of fascinating stories about his time in New Ireland, explains abstract concepts very well while continuously checking in on everyone's understanding. Kind and approachable. Tests were VERY tough, but I could tell he genuinely wanted his students to succeed. One flaw - not being able to check grade.
Ask, why do people do what they do and, why do other people do the same thing differently...?
