lots of readings but summarizes them for you
Suppose an easy course, but very hard with him!
Its 1st year phil ! Terms not defined clearly. He jumps into application
Not a hard courses, do a lot of examples to get a good mark~ Ask Q if needed!
WATCH OUT FOR THE FINAL!!! READ AAALOT AND EVERYTHING
Teaching and grading style ruins the entire concept of a survey class. Avoid.
Explanation of the material is weak
He's a very nice and funny teacher. And he's very helpful as well. He makes sure you learn your stuff and doesn't mind going over things sixty-nine billion times to achieve that.
Very interesting material covered, but he doesn't make it easy to understand. Gives you his own typed notes, which turns out to be more confusing than his lectures. It's a first year course and your mark is based on two essays and the final.
I found him to be a good professor. I found the term papers to be good tools for studying for the final and the final was fair. Before the final he askes you to ask questions - ask! Many of the questions were on the final. Also keep up with the reading
I love the class. He's a fun teacher and he's very clear on the concepts. I like how he incoporates everyday life into his lectures. He has a unique laugh... @_@
100% finals ... what a joke !!!!!
His demeanor can be irritating, but it is wise always to be friendly to him!
made me lose any original interest and desire i had in learning philosophy. my only regret now that the class is over is that my dislike of it made me sell my really great philisophical text at the first possible chance
The material itself is very interesting (and not that hard), however he makes it very boring and mundane by doing the same thing every day (the structure of his classes). There is no variety. Philosohpy is fun, he makes it boring.
If you like definition course this is not one of them. Read exciting essays written by philosophers. Some guy made a morality chart.
Do the practices and you will get A! easy midterms and final.

His class is a waste of time. He can't teach. The material covered is very interesting though; if you're interested in Philosophy, take it with someone else.
His handouts basically summarize the essays you are supposed to read. Even if you haven't read the essay, you can easily follow along in class. Good professor.
Clear, concise, and above all, a fun and investigative style of education. Huge amounts of discussions and class input. Loved his class, makes light of ignorance.Tough marker.
He sucked out any desire I had to study philosophy. His lectures are boring, his attempted jokes are not funny, and there was just something about his demeanor that was irritating.

He is an ok prof, but i wouldn't necessarily recommend taking him. He is always willing to help, but doesn't really cover basics in class, he just does essays from the text. 2 papers, and a VERY HARD final. I'd recommend taking it with another prof.
ok, i see lots of students have written bad things about him. i did not find him to be bad at all. he is a fair marker considering the topics discussed actually require some thinking. he is a bit of a nerd, but very interactive, interesting ¬ too proud
Our class average for our midterm was a "D" Need I say more?

Hey, Stop trashing the Nerd! He is not the best on lectures, but his sumery handouts are good.If you do as he tells you (read each reading 3 times) you can ace the exam... He will boost the grades if the avarage is low. I'm and ESL student and I did OK...
Don't bother with his lectures- I could learn more staring at the cover of the textbook. I'm sorry- he may be smart but he does not care to share his wisdom with us. Don't take this class- or at least, take it with someone who can teach
He is a new PHD. They should make phd's take one or 5 years of education before allowing them to teach. He is a nice guy but not anywhere on this planet. Our class average is a D, and there are alot of bright people in this class. The lectures are a bore.
Enough trashing! Alex is extremely intelligent -intimidating, but essential to teach ethics. He is funny (esp. his jungle suit) and insightful. Those who say they learned nothing aren't ready for college. Teaches HOW to learn, not just useless facts.
Most you whiners have just got your midterm back, If the average is low he scales up. Alex is fair, aproachable and very intelligent. Philosophy is a difficult subject dont take it if you can't handle it! and you've gotta love the jungle shirt!
There's no way the class average shall be a 'D'. His exam is hard if you haven't read most of the articles. The term paper outline tells you wich articles to use. Unless he's changed this format. Logic was too fast paced and hard.

did not find notes or material covered in class help me at all.
he's just clueless. yes, he's new but students shouldn't have to pay the price for that.philosophy is NOT a difficult subject if it's taught correctly and the students are engaged. exams test irrelevant details and essays are marked by a v. hard marker :(
He's actually helpful if you email him questions. He gives more information and clarification outside of class if you ask. He returns messages promptly and is upfront with the material and what he expects in an essay. No surprises, reasonable. I'm happy.
Alex will be a great teacher when he gets over his anxiety around students. Very helpful with clarification of material outside class time. Be warned though-he tests on trivia and each exam is on 20+ essays from the text. Nice guy.
Boston rules. The only philosophy teacher ive had that i can talk to and he'll take your opinion seriously as long as you half know what youre talking about. And trust me, Im a friggin slacker and I got an A, just listen to him and think about the stuff.
His midterm is friggin hard, but the final exam was ez and boosted my mark. Be keen on the readings and you'll do great.
i took boston in 2003 and man he was soo disorganized thts its not even funny. all the students in our class hated him coz he picked on some of us. anyhow , i wouldnt recommend anyone taking this class coz its so freakin boring.
He's really smart and seems to know a lot about philosophy. But he simply doesn't know how to teach. His mid-term is brutal. The class average was a -D. Half the class failed.
Alex Boston is a very fair teacher. In order to get an A you have to make sure u ask him how to get that A and make sure u get his own personal notes for the lectures and ask for the final exam questions. he'll give em to you in a disguised form but you can manage because the final is cumulative.
He needs to change his class style-. I think he has his ideas on how to learn- Pretty much hands you a book and tells you to find out yourself. Not a bad approach if you're interested in phil. I think he wants you to learn how to learn, it' snot that he's lazy.Just has bad ideas on teach
Glad to see Alex back at Langara this year. Very kind, helpful prof, did his best to make the material palatable. Was extremely nice in answering long, rambling philosophy emails, and was willing to grade up a paper at my request when in retrospect I doubt I deserved it. Good luck, Alex.
nice guy, but not friendly (helpful) and i agree, a threat to the GPA. But he's nice. Be friends with him, don't take his class though.
never take him!!!he is the worst teacher in langara!!!He is not helpful and his class is so boring. His exam is sooooo hard and he never curve you up!!!!Never take his class, never!
This class was unbearable. The notes are disorganized and misspelled, the teaching is lackluster and random, and the tests are unreasonably difficult. It's not a difficult subject, but the lack of a cohesive course outline and the reliance on the grade-curve are stressful and ultimately detrimental. Don't take it!

All of you who have written that Alex is unclear and unhelpful probably never showed up to his lectures, nor did u probably understand the material b/c it was beyond you!!! Alex is fair, clear in his teaching style, and cares about his students...anyone who disagrees is too stupid to understand philosophy.
Those who feel the need to bash Boston aren't cut out to be in college. His quizz test your knowledge of the text (if you read it, you won't have a problem. Overall his lectures are informative. He knows what he is talking about! Give him that. This class is for those who are willing to work hard!(your mark will reflect that)
A fair, helpful and experimental prof who tries a new grading system each simester. For us, we had a quiz every day worth 1% of our grade and an essay worth 40% and a test worth 7% so the final exam ended up being only 7 questions long and worth 10%! Hard quizzes, but clear explanation. Tests are quite doable while in class discussions can get dry.
Loved him, funny, and easy. There is a 1% quiz everyday (super easy..one qs..)One word...easy. BUT if you're bad on essays...I dun think this class is for you, cause there is a 40% essay > < I did pretty well so no worries for me ^^
Took this class a while ago, but Alex was a very nice, helpful instructor. I found the class quite hard but really enjoyed it and did alright after a lot of work. The lectures were a little dry, but when people participated in class discussions, he mediated them well. Alex is really interesting and I would take him again.
I attended most of the lectures for his class and still had no idea what was going on. He just sits there are reads from the dry text book and waits till the class is over. It's pretty obvious he's only around for his paycheck. He marked the class on a bell curve. The average mark on our midterm was 13/30. Enough said.
Alex Boston is hilarious and is the greatest defintion of a wholesome nerd in the best way. I wanna date him and his cats. I highly recommend his class because he's extremely intelligent and gives great lecture notes. He encourages washing your hands and is always willing to meet outside of class to help.BEST PHIL TEACHER EVER
It's odd to see such harsh bashings. I thought he was interesting, clear & helpful/friendly. Not overly easy, but if you put in an effort, not impossible to do well. The bell curve may be a helpful to some not to others, keep that in mind. If I had any real interest in philosophy, I'd take it from him again & I have taken another prof's class since
good teacher, does plenty of helpful examples, hands out study notes, and ALWAYS willing to answer questions and explain until you understand. easy class, just need to do a lot of homework and practice. total nerd, very funny. one of the best at langara.
He's a great teacher who is always willing to help out his students. People complain that all he does is read from the "dry" text". He has to do that, because that's where the Philososphers essays are printed. That is where our lessons come from. He has to refer back to the text so he can make his lecture clear.
Such a sweetie. A total nerd, and corny jokes, but I loved 'em. The bottom line is, if you work hard, you get a good grade and that's how it should be. I'll take him again..
Very good teacher. He knows his material well. He knows what he's doing. No final exam if your class completes his daily quizzes. Quizzes are one question about the article in the text. He gives notes about it but you really have to read and understand the text. You don't have to go to class but to get an easy A, you should. He's funny anyway!
Hard but fair marker. Most marks come from daily quizes for 1-2% of your final grade each. This means no midterm/final, but it also means that you have to go to class in order to pass. Good class disscusion, easy to initiate whatever subject you feel like (and don't wimp out after the quiz, he sometimes takes attendance at the end of the day).
Not having a final exam was awsome.
His lectures stray from the topic at hand more often than not.His quizzes are often quite vague, so read the material 3 times before each quiz.He recommends reading the material 3 times, and it seems like a lot of work, but it is very necessary. The paper is challenging, but he scales the marks so you'll do better than you expect. Overall, A-.
I'm only two weeks in so the jury is still out. Let's just say i'm very, very nervous.
I Love him and his cats. Does a superb job of teaching and class work is definately manageable. If you have any interest in the subject then you will probably do well.
What an amazing guy! Alex is funny, interesting, and intelligent. We had an early morning class so it was hard to get discussions going at times, but he obviously worked hard to get them started. He's a genuine individual who is open to new ideas. Work is manageable and NO FINAL! I thoroughly enjoyed his Cats..i mean...class :)
Alex Boston is my hero. What a lovable nerd. To do well, you have to show up, as there is a quiz everyday. But, all in all his system is fair and if you do what he asks you will get an awesome mark!
Mr. Boston makes Philosophy interesting! He's a fair-minded teacher with a sense of humour, loves class discussions, and gives pre-typed notes, but BEWARE!! If you're not the kind of person who can make it to class everyday and read the textbook, then do NOT take this course! There is a daily quiz worth 1% of your grade and attendance is required.
Awesome prof! I knew next to nothing about philosophy before I took his class, and now I'm very interested! Very funny and inspiring, and its easy to get a good mark if you really read what he tells you to read each day....you get 1% quizzes everyday on what was discussed in the textbook. no major exams. floats my boat. A-!
i like philosophy and he can bore me out. quizzes piss me off, and he's really not helpful in the essay. people leave his freaking class after his quiz.he is extremely lazy, and what i hated the most is that he waited 3 weeks for the long weekend to mark the 40% essays!!
great teacher.you got be able to attend every class, cuz there's quizzes everyday!when it comes to writing the paper, dont think too much into, dont make it any harder then it needs to be.keep your paper simple dont do more than you have to.
Alex encourages discussion and really tries to help you understand the readings, which can be difficult. Don't think that you can 'get out' of quizzes by talking alot... they ALLLLLL just pile up to the end. Try to get through enough material each day so that this doesn't happen at crunch time and you'll be smiling. One of my favorite profs.
There are quizzes everyday worth +1% each so attendance is mandatory! Good side is that there is no final exam or midterm, only one big paper worth 40%. Alex is very insightful and I absolutely enjoy being in his class!! He uses the bell curve at the end of the semester to influence everybody in a POSITIVE way!!
For a subject that can quite easily be made fascinating and equally engaging, he somehow makes it a dull drag. Frequently makes me wonder why I didn't buy a textbook and read it on my own.
Alex is a decent prof, but his jokes are a little weird. He's helpful and interested in his subject, but a bit awkward to interact with. It's pretty easy to pass if you read the articles at home and just show up for the quizzes (daily!)
He's a great guy. Funny, and gets people involved. His lectures give you a good idea of the readings. If you read all of them you'll be fine. 1-2 one sentence quizzes every day and a lecture. Nice and fun.
Do you like to hear lots of stories about 97-year-old landladies, mischievous cats, and sword-fighting classes? If so, this is the class for you! Nice guy, interesting readings, big booming laugh that strikes when you least expect it, good fun. Frustratingly mediocre class discussions have a tendency to go off-topic
Whatever you do, don't take this prof, expecially if your just taking philosophy as an elective. He lacks passion and is bland as a board. No one liked his marking scheme at all. Attendence is MANDATORY, so if your the type that does the readings and only likes coming for the tests, don't take him. In fact, just don't take him.
Awesome teach! If you like contemplating and articulating, take his philosophy classes! He keeps discussions interesting. Nice guy.
Terrible! Insane tests every class worth 3%. have to memorize the text each class and the questions are SO random you never know how it will go. do the quiz in 10 min, then sit for 1.5 hrs listening to him read exactly what was in the handout he gives. NO discussion marks at all, so you can sit silently but philosophy is meant to be talked about!
just read the texts before classes, then there'll be no problem at all!!
Alex is very passionate about Philosophy. He's very clear on facts and can answer any question given asked from us students. He's very nice as well, although I think he has a case of short-term memory loss, as it's hard for him to remember his students. Although he provides notes, you still have to read the text.
Alex is the men. Philosphy is not a easy course but his grading system urges me to read the book, attend every quiz and enjoy what phil is. He is not a easy marker but I think he actually do curve. I got A because did pretty good in daily quizzes. Go with him if you like to read a lot.
He's funny from time to time but I think he could be a little more engaging with his lectures. Basically, he just reads off the notes and explains them by rephrasing the whole thing. Plus, I really question his marker because when his marker graded my essay, he gave a comment that completely contradicted himself.
FUNNY PROF! Showed high interest in what he teaches. No final/MT but quizzes everyday and a paper to write. I like that better than the traditional way. I enjoyed his classes but his quizzes aren't easy, lots of thinking
interesting prof, has a good sense of humour and is very passionate about what he teaches. is very helpful and gives you great notes to understand the material, but wastes tonnes of paper by not double siding them! makes the material interesting and is very funny! respects eveyones opinion! he is always in a great mood, too.
Interesting course, Boston is a good teacher but the course is not set up good. He does daily quizzes and if you show up late you don`t get to do them. The quizzes are also the majority of your mark and can be your downfall. Take this course if you`d like but be prepared that it is a ton of reading and studying.
Alex is an okay prof. Attending class is mandatory since there is a quiz everyday, usually 2. The quizzes are right in the beginning of class so dont be late, u can leave right after you have done the quiz, because he tends to ramble on about his fiance and cat for the rest of class. Oh, theres no final and one paper. Read & you'll do fine
Good class and proff...if you go to class and go readings you will get an A for sure. Also class in interesting.
He was teaching a history of philosophy section in a classics survey course. I found him loud and annoying (and many of my classmates around me did as well). It was impossible to take notes from his lecture because he was disorganized, and tended to ramble. read of a wikipedia? page for important historical details, not sure if they were accurate.
Horrible teacher. You can only do well in this course if you read and understand every article he gives you (at least four articles a week -on average 15 pages per article small print). He is accommodating if you get sick or something but otherwise you get a quiz every class worth 60% of your grade. it sucks and he makes the subject uninteresting
Alex is a good teacher, but he's teaching philosophy. You need to be an AMAZING teacher to teach philosophy well, and Alex isn't amazing, just above average. Sometimes he's clear, and sometimes he's not.. really depends on the reading. if you like philosophy and are a decent student you'll do fine in his classes. if you don't, and aren't, then y
Alex is a teacher with a noticeable conservative bias. This and his frequent reliance on cliches and profanity can sometimes make his lectures boring. However you can do fine if you're a conformist and agree with him, laugh at his jokes etc. Just work on your grades and don't let him get in the way of learning.
very good teacher only the quiz questions should be changed because most questions are from students and when you do the readings, you have to memorize each line and every sentence not just understand it.
He's pretty "meh." I don't mind quizzes; what I do have a problem with his quizzes is that he picks two sentences out of the ENTIRE text. It ended up being more about memorization as opposed to comprehension. My interest levels in his lectures range from extreme highs to extreme lows
Alex is a great teacher! For the quizzes he does he doesn't pick a random line from the readings he picks an important and significant line. As long as u read the readings ull be fine. When he does papers, he marks well. I always got A's on the papers. He makes the class interesting. Over all I recommend him.
It's obvious Alex loves philosophy. He knows what he's talking about and loves class discussions. His essay grading is fair but his tests are hard. If there is something about his teaching the class feels they dislike, he is sympathetic to a discussion and changing how he would normally grade a class. Which is HUGE.
Very clear and easy to understand. A tough but fair marker. Has a tendency to use profanity in class which all students may not be fair with. Makes his personal opinions and ideas known but explains various perspectives fairly. Demonstrates good personal knowledge of the subject matter
he's a really wise professor thats for sure, but he likes to make witty remarks that sometimes dont really help with studying, he makes everything into a riddle and i just think that quizzes are ridiculously hard and they are worth 30% of your grade.
Painful. The quizzes have nothing to do with comprehension, you will only have a chance to get the question right if you happen to memorize the line he asks about. I'm an A student who reads each article 3 times and I still get zero on a regular basis. This must be his least fav. Course to teach as he appears to put NO effort into teaching it.
Best professor I've had in Langara. Very energetic and engages the class. Good sense of humor , it is never dull in class because of his personality. There are , however, 2 quizzes every class, but instead there isn't a final exam. The quizzes are somewhat difficult
His quizzes are really hard nothing to do with understanding the articles more of memorizing each article! I just had him this semester. The essay is worth 40% which is a lot and he marks hard.
Great class, I love Alex. There are daily quizzes (worth 60%) and one essay (worth 40%), which works out to be about 2% per quiz. The quizzes are fairly hard HOWEVER if you read the articles (or even just read over his notes he gives) you will do fine! Not a hard class as long as you show up and do the readings. his notes=my bible. LOVE THIS CLASS
Warning! He "seems to" listen but never really engage as he dismisses things that he does not agree. Not quite an introductory course as he quizzes on things that require a certain depth of understanding & all questions are so random & have no pattern. You will get out the course more stressed and discouraged. He needs to change the teaching method
He isn't committed to the title of the course. It is an intro & he should be more clear and at least have a pattern if he was to quiz thats worth 60%. He "seems to" randomly choose questions that only corresponds to memorization which isn't learning. He is hired as a teacher of thinking not spelling bee. I would like to get my $ back let alone time
First off, if you're the type of student doesn't like speed dating. DON'T choose his classes. He will make you get into random groups THEN get up and choose a different group of people to talk about, "philosophy." His notes are very difficult to understand and he forces his ways on you. Calls you his "micro experiment" As if you're a guinea pig..
Every class started off with him writing "FLU SHOT" in big letters across the board, then taking a few minutes to talk about "not killing our grandmothers". Presents a few ideas, goes off on a tangent that quickly turns into a stage for his ideologies. Incapable of considering opposing perspectives, embarrasses students, 1 question specific quizes
I imagine anyone who enjoys philosophy will like his class. 60% of grade relies on your ability to READ and UNDERSTAND 2 articles before each class (about 1 hr of readingarticle). 40% of grade is from midterm essay - it seems he looks for thoughtfulness and understanding in this. Don't lose easy marks - spell check and use proper grammar.
He is a tough marker but it is because he expects a lot from his students which is fair. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. And if you are having a bad day he shows sympathy and is always willing to give you his time to help. Awesome guy! His little Socrates stuffy is awesome too. Learned a lot from this guy, very knowledable! U ROCK!!
This teacher misunderstands the very idea of learning to think philosophically. He prescribes memorization as opposed to learning and understanding. When asked "why would he ask a question on a quiz about the footnotes of an article?" He replied "to make sure you read it". I want to discuss, and engage with people, this teacher wants you to read.
As a person, he's a good enough guy, but as a professor, he could do better. Quizzes every class account for most of your grade, and usually ask for really specific details. If you want to ace these quizzes, it's not enough to read and understand. You need to come close to memorizing. He also tries to be respectful and open, but sometimes is harsh.
His quizz questions are ambiguously worded and you end up giving an answer you were not asked to give. The worst part is that you knew the right answer, you just didn't know you had to give it. Also, he is too concerned about insignificant details and doesn't seem to care about whether if you understood the main idea or not.
If you do reading, you will do fine in his class. He has a good sense of humor. What I didn't like was he makes you talk with other students for about 30 mins. sometimes you just have to listen to stupid ideas which is a pure torture.
Alex Boston is an excellent philosophy teacher. Yes, his reading quizzes are a pain and the readings are long and tough, but this is philosophy and that should be understood. He is definitely there for you if you have any questions and he's also pretty funny.
3-4 pretty long articles to read each class, expect to have 3-4 quizzes the next class regarding the small details. So you've gotta read and understand the article so much to get an A. He goes through the notes really fast, you'll get lost. I recommend him if you like to listen and read a lot. HILARIOUS LAUGH THO takes out the dryness in class.
worst course in my life
He doesn't have clear grading criteria, and doesn't teach a lot of what he expects you to know for his course. He's a good person, smart, and good humored, but I'd have a tough time recommending him for anyone who wants to keep their GPA consistent with their work.
Quizzes every class on the readings, some are easy some are not, and a paper. No midterm or final. If you do well on the quizzes and read the text you should do well. Lectures are boring and a waste of time, the quizzes are the only reason to show up.
Don't ever take his class unless you are ready to get F or 60s for doing the paper on time or even done it right. I do know my english essay skill is the worst out of all academical skills but he just gives you 20% if you don't fit in in his 'criteria,' which I was never sure of. Never cares. You may think I am stupid, but if you do so then try it.
Makes you show up for a test everyday but after that its never worth it to stay as he gives you every word of his lectures on the first day of class. The only real assignment is an essay that you write early on in the class but dont get back until most of the way through. Also uses his position as a professor to push his political ideologies.
Easy A if you want it! He scaled me up 20%! You have to show up to class for the first 15 minutes since he gives quizzes every class, but you can leave after. Super chill guy.
easy subject
Easy marker. I have enrolled into PHIL 1101 with him, although classes were boring and dull. But easy marker, if i can get such good grades (Literally i never done any reading) any one can get good marks
Great professor..
His lectures are very boring, he gives you the notes for the entire semester on the first day of class and grades you on a paper and daily quizzes. He needs to work on being more discrete and respectful to students in his classroom conduct. One bad experience was enough for me to write him off completely. Do not take his class.
He eats alot in class. Never take his class. He does not give any midterm or final but the tests he takes daily are worst.
Lots of quizzes, 2 quizzes of one one line daily from 4 pages chapter, boring class,
Class is pretty much an open discussion between students, he never leads or gives feedback. most of the time found wandering the halls looking for food to steal from all the other instructors and offices. Be prepared for lots of boring quizzes. The man never stops talking about his kid or eating.
Overall, a nice teacher with a good atttitude towards students. The main issue was the lecture material. Everyday there would be 1-2 quizzes and this would have been fine if the questions didn't focus on one minuscule part of a 3 page report. No actual slides to follow and the notes he wrote were not easy to understand.
Great class to take if you want to waste a few months of your life. Alex is nice enough I guess (although he blows you off if he disagrees with your opinion) but the class itself is a bunch of nonsense.
Mediocre prof. Course was on Plato's Republic, which is a fascinating book, but Boston just summarizes it without commentary. I still have no idea what his views are on anything at all. Minimal feedback on assignments and unclear marking system but he is approachable by email and via office hours. Nice guy, just not a great philosophy prof.
The class was mostly self-directed. He assigned readings and had question prompts to answer with an argument based on the text. The class really helped my argument and writing skills. You have to show up to class and pay attention to get a better idea of what the somewhat vague assignments are looking for. Be ready to work, but it's worth it.
He is good but cannot explain everything easily and do not provide any notes. Lastly, I wanna say it will depend on you that how can you take your course because I don't understand more in his videos and even in lecture.
Horrible. I thought the class was easy to start but the final project we had was absolutely horrible. He failed me on my final which was worth 30% so my grade dropped from 80 to 65 and he refused to let me do an extra assignment to make up for the drop.
Easy to get an OK mark; much greater expectations to earn an exceptional mark. Challenges on disagreed points, but receptive to sufficiently supported argument. Sense of humour that simultaneously evaluates if you understand the subject matter. Gives in depth constructive critique when asked authentically; gives and receives philosophic generosity.

He is one of the amazing professors . I have taken two courses with him . His way of teaching is great .I never thought I would start loving philosophy. Moreover , he is not strict in marking .
: D - Gives high grades if you showed your efforts. - Easy-going and friendly. ( I handed in an assignment after the deadline, and he still gave me 80% on that :D ) - Funny lectures. D : - Textbook is compulsory as you will need it for the essay and exam. - Sometimes he will cancel the class, make sure to check your phone before leaving home.
Not good
Literally just so chill. He's a very specific type of philosophy prof funny and has engaging lectures that cover all of the reading, making the reading only half necessary. He is also a proponent of cheap textbooks which is great. But the biggest thing is that he hugely supportive of the trans students in his class, super accommodating. 10/10
No slides, no notes just him reading from the textbook and simplifying it. The daily quizzes dropped my grade by 15 percent... It's so annoying and unrealistic for students to do a quiz every single beginning of class. If you take him the urge to skip class will come about within the first month of school. Nice guy though jokes a lot.
Grading: 15% daily quizzes, 25% 2 midterms, 25% final. Tough final-25 Qs, 7 options each. I failed, hurt my grade. Nice instructor, but boring lectures, just reads from the book. Attending class felt pointless with all notes and videos available from day one. No structure besides reading Plato's Republic. Wouldn't retake despite humour.
Daily reading quizzes are pretty annoying, but his exams are very simple, no assignments, and he posts all of his lecture material on BrightSpace day one. Super nice guy as well, just beware of the quizzes if you take him. Online textbook was also really irritating at times. Our class average on the final was so bad he bell-curved it
He is a nice enough guy but he is constantly bringing up political opinions and seems to think everyone agrees with him. Opinions should be left out when teaching lectures especially when they are not based on facts, but feelings. Make sure to read the chapters and you will do fine on the in class quizzes.
because his textbook is so awful to both navigate and read having quizzes mainly based on text book reading rather then lecture notes makes his quizzes quite frustrating. I had to copy paste up to 8 pages of one article in his textbook just to read it properly as it seems that the book has been photocopied (his text book is online form only). :/
Avoid if you can. Although he seems nice, he is a tough grader. His final is extremely hard. Going to his class seems useless since it is very boring. Beware of the quizzes, just read his lectures notes and you will be fine. Boring lectures. !!!!
nice enough guy, terrible teacher.
Made the mistake of taking his once a week, 3 hour lecture. No Powerpoint, nothing - just Alex talking to us with no clear preparation. If he gets through the readings fast enough he will write a question on the board and ask us to discuss in small groups. Quiz every single class. 30% midterm, 30% final, 30% on quizzes - 10% participation
Listen to the other ratings. Just had to withdraw to keep my GPA from plummeting, wasted $300 to find out this guy is a terrible professor. Everyone in his class has 60% right now, he tests on very random things and does not use lecture slides so I hope you're good at memorizing entire textbooks if you want to take any of his courses.
He talks a lot and sometimes you can get really bored but overall hes a good teacher, just read the free online textbook before classes, write notes and youll be good. its hard to say what he he will quiz you on but every class you have a quiz at the start of class. i would reccommened if you like philosophy.
pompous, creepy, inconsiderate. makes it impossible 2 do more than just scrape by a pass even 4 ppl that put their all into studying/have good english. daily quizzes feel like theyr set up to fail you. doesnt care what ur going thru in ur personal life as far as making accmdtns but he luvs 2 eavesdrop and insert himself in ur private conversations.
Lectures can be dry, but the professor is approachable. Focus on the readings and assignments - they're the key to doing well. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for prep.
This class guarantees an easy A if you simply attend and listen during his lectures (albiet he can be a little political; however, remains respectful) and simply take 30 mins in between lectures to read and take note on the material you will be quizzed on. This is a class to develop your philosophy, not to know about what the "right" philosophy is.
He is a nice enough guy to the point in which you don't really dislike him but can't really stand his class either. He is very open and talks about his political views as if they were right, even tho he says he doesn't want to influence people on their opinions. Tough grader and the everyday quizzes are based on textbook not on what he says in clas
Impossible daily "quizzes" (worth 30% of your grade) make it feel like hes holding you hostage during his brutal lectures, 4 which theres no presentation aid and he inserts weird/awkward references to S3X when there are 1000s of other examples available. Wants 100% memorization of textbook rather than demonstrated understanding of course concepts.
Do yourself a favor and take a class from anyone else at Langara. This textbox is not big enough to air my grievances about this prof.
Tough grader for no reason. Lectures are just him yapping for the entire class and all for making everyday quizzes of stuff he didnt even mention, there is no way to demonstrate philosophy and it is very unenjoyable. He also makes weird references. Id take anyone else but him
structure of this course was dreadful. doesn't engage your understanding at all. nice guy but super boring lectures.
Teacher is nice, implemented a grade curve to the final since so many people did badly. This class is an easy A but you still need to study (duh?). The final wasn't even cumulative. Exams are based off the book, not his lectures, he says this. You leave class after the daily quiz, but if you want the attendance grade you need to stay (obviously?)
This is not a bad class; genuinely can be considered easy! All content is in the textbook (he summarizes it for an hour) but participation still matters for your mark so keep that in mind. Quizzes every class (one question) so it all depends on how much work you're willing to put in. Overall funny + nice guy just depends on your learning style.
Overall very boring and repetitive type of professor. Be ready to take a 1 question quiz for every class of the semester. Then he'll go into his 1 hour lecture and then finish off the class with a group discussion question.Only marks in his class are from both midterm/final and the daily quizzes along with participation.Pretty tough marker as well.
Engaging but sometimes lackluster lectures. His quizzes at the beginning of class are only 1 question that is generally easy if you just read the small, free online textbook chapter of like 10 pages or less. He is generous with midterm in-class essay marks if you just.. study (crazy, right?). Course is overall not complicated or hard.
Other reviews saying this class is too much work or that he is too harsh and not engaging are not post-secondary social sciences material, this course should not challenge you very much if you show a basic interest in philosophy and can spend half an hour reading before each class quiz
This class was quite easy as long as you pay attention to the material, which is all in the textbook.
Very engaging lectures, fun group discussions, one-question quizzes per class based on textbook material. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and its structure. Mr. Boston is friendly, easy-going and gives constructive feedback to every idea in the classroom.
Tests every classs worth 25% of your grade. Read the chapters beforehand and focus on the small things. I didn't like how small some of the ideas were. During class, make sure to write down whatever he writes down and it'll probably include what's on the quiz. Other than that, elaborate on your ideas in the midterm and review for the final.
Alex is genuinely a great prof and love what he teaches but i didn't enjoyed his class. he use the same method over all and at times u get bored. there is everyday quiz worth of 25% of grade. and everyday group discussion. heavy lecture and reading.
