He was a wonderful and entertaining professor. His lectures were interesting and the work level was fair. Two tests and two papers. Although there was alot of reading it helped make the lectures more interesting and understandable.

Though our section was not designated as "Writing Intensive," it certainly was so; both the midterm & final were writing-based, in addition to 2 term papers. There's also a lot of supplementary reading (3 novels & various texts). With that said, he did an excellent job in maintaining an intellectual atmosphere, especially through class discussions.

His class was very writing intensive - two 5-page papers, a written midterm and final as well. I messed up big in class and he totally helped me out when he didn't have to. He really knows his history, I just personally didn't find it interesting.

take this class only if you really are interested in history. it is NOT an easy class. i killed myself this semester to get an A, which is almost impossible to get in this class. no curve, no extra credit. it was the most difficult class i've taken here. i suggest taking it if you don't have a heavy load of classes and such. he's cool though!

take this class if you need a nap during the day...i'm serious you'll fall asleep and he wont even notice because all he does is talk throughout the whole class!!!..no homework just two five page papers and two exams where he gives you 40 I.D's and he only puts 10 on the exam!!...TAKE HIM IF ITS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!!

One of the best professors at the school. I loved history going into this class, and more now. I would stay in it through the summer if they extended it (which they should). Nothing extraneous or dull in any of the lectures. One of the few professors at the school who successfully argues the necessity of their subject area.

I really enjoyed this history class. Professor d'Erizans is really passionate about history and makes it interesting. Do not take this class if you want an easy A because it's not going to happen. The readings are a necessity before class so you can ask question and be a part of discussions, which he highly values. If you work hard you'll enjoy it.

Professor d'Erizans was very kind. I think he is still developing his style of teaching, but what he lacks in experience he makes up in understanding, patience, and knowledge. If anyone wants a warm teacher who will challenge you with high expectations in paper-writing and lots of reading - this is the class for you.

It was a Writing Intensive class so there was alot of material to read and write about. Other than that he was a warm and knowledgable guy. He made every effort to assist the students in anyway. Some of the material may have been too much for some to keep up with - but other than that he did his best to work with everyone.

One of the best professors at BMCC. He expects a lot from his students, so be prepared to do lots of readings and writing assignments. He is very sweet, patient, and easy-going, so even though the course work can be daunting, he will gladly help you with anything you need.

I LEARNED A LOT IN HIS CLASS, BUT I DID NOT LIKE THE WAY HE GRADES. HE IS REALLY TOUGH AND HIS COURSE TOOK UP ALL MY TIME. IF YOU WANT AN A DO NOT TAKE HIM NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU STUDY IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I FELT HOPELESS TOWARD THE END. I HAVE GOTTEN A FROM HARDER PROFESSORS BUT NOT FROM HIM.

Professor d'Erizans is awesome. His lectures are very clear and the discussions allow students to partcipate(part of grade actually). His assignments really challenge students because there is heavy reading and writing, but the knowledge and analytical skills you gain from the class are worth it. I recommend this professor highly.

AMAZING! HE REQUIRES LOTS AND LOTS OF READING, BUT THEY ARE EASY READINGS. HE HELPS YOU AS MUCH AS YOU NEED IT AND HE MAKES SURE TO KEEP THE CLASS AS FUN AS POSSIBLE. For all those who think reading 20pages a day for a history class is too much... You don't belong in college. Yes, is a lot if work specially for those like me who work full time and come to school but I'll remember what I learn for the rest of my life. In other courses everything is forgotten after the summer. Thank you D'Erizans!

His classes are very writing focused. You will read alot and participation is a must. However, D'erizans is the most helpful, paitent, and understanding professor I have ever had. I've taken both of his courses and his lectures are anything but boring. His professionalism is what all professors should strive for.

Professor d'Erizans is a fantastic teacher! He really loves history and it shows. His classes are all discussion based with lots of class participation. Be aware though, there is a paper due every week, 2 five page essays, and his midterm and final are hard. If you don't mind work and like to write I definitely recommend him!

BEWARE NOT AN EASY CLASS!! The Prof gives a lot of work; weekly discussion write-ups, a Midterm and Final with 10 out of 40 words that he makes you study plus essays in each 1, and on top of that there are 2 research essays 1 due on midterm week and the other on finals. The prof is good and nice. The class is very interesting but its all lectures.

Unless you are very disciplined don't take his class. It is a lot of work and it will take up all of your time. Not an easy A. On the other hand he is very understanding and patient and is very respectful towards his students. Always willing to help.

He is a great professor - Loves history and he makes you love it. But lazy people beware alot of reading 20to50 pages per class and discussion question due each week; to five page essays and study hard for the midterm and final. But overall a really great professor that is very involved in school affairs and cares about his students.

the most difficult class I had to take ever, and to make it worse it was my first year in college. yes, he is understanding and approachable, you could ask a question and he will answer it clearly but he is extremely strict, lots of reading and writing, it's like an intensive writing course. his tests are not multiple choice, everything is written.

if you are more than 5 minutes late youre absent.if youre on your phone you are absent. more tha 3 absences your grade will drop a whole letter grade. talks forever ! super boring ! tests are not multiple choice. 2 5 page papers. 3 pages of typed work a week. 15 - 30 pgs of reading a week. good luck!

Prof. D is really nice and really helpful however you will end up doing a LOT of reading, somewhere around 50pgs a week so you must read or else you will be lost for the rest of the semester and at that point it will be very hard for you to catch up so it be best for you to read. Also the class is very dry so heads up about that.

For a summer class, he is just as tough. It was a mistake taking him. Like others who complain, there is a lot of reading before every class, discussion write-ups, papers and tests. This is college though. You cannot expect this to be easy. The work is easy but if you're someone who cannot handle a demanding workload, don't take him.

B+ - A- and I'm taking his class now and I always sit in the front. so here are some points about him. -nice guy, tough grader -will never write on the board unless it about military tactics -tons of reading -not very informative with his lectures -he LOVES Western military as if he was there in the phalanx beware!!!!!!

His lectures are not helpful AT ALL! He makes the class uninteresting. All Over the place, not clear in class or what he wants. Expects the students to know everything. You are basically on your own. You work extremely hard (4-5 hours reading daily) and the grade you receive is not reflected. Horrible grader! Horrible class! Can't wait to finish..

He's very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are extremely long and just lectures- doesn't incorporate other techniques. One graded discussion question write up a week that he emails before hand. Two big essays, midterm and final. Be specific in discussion question write-ups.

Of course classes should be challenging, but this professor is VERY UNREALISTIC. He would like the students to know as much as he does, and he knows A LOT. Do not recommend because, he is a tough grader and wants you to mention every single detail. He is not what I expected and I deeply regret wasting my time with this class.

Dr. d'Erizans is the best of the best. I loved his class so much that I took both 101 and 102. His lectures are so detailed and interesting that he makes you feel like you're there in the historical moment. I appreciate that he doesn't rely on Power Point; he doesn't need it. Be prepared to work harder than you've ever worked, but it's worth it.

All I can say is "GOOD LUCK," to those coming on Spring. Honestly, I don't recommend him at all... Too much reading, and the midterm/finals are ridiculous. You STUDY 40 terms, you don't know which will be on the test. He chooses ten and you pick 5 out of the ten. He didn't cancel an essay that was due, and we have to email it to me after finals.

I guess participation does NOT matter in this class. I would ALWAYS participate, do ALL the readings, come to class on time, sat in the front, got a B on my discussions write ups, and gave all essays on time. Horrible grader, horrible class, boring, needs more experience in teaching... He's all over the place, don't take or you'll end up dropping!

Good luck if you choose to go ahead with this class. If I would've dropped I would be much happier with my grade. I went through hell! He assigns a 5 page essay with bibliography and MEMO (2 page memo) during Midterm week. Yep! Then, on Finals week he also assigns the same. 40 terms which you have know it all by which he chooses 10. read RMP! :(

Some people does not believe in RMP, and I was one of them. I gave him a chance even after reading his reviews, knowing my ability and dedication. Everything that is mentioned here is TRUE! everything. If you are like me, save yourself the stress you WILL get in his class and drop the class. Anyone but this professor. If you need this class you are better off waiting for another professor or taking the class during the summer if there is anyone else. Four months with Prof D'Erizans will make you hate BMCC and your life. I've had some professors that I disagreed with, but he is by far my least favorite.

Great guy, horrible professor. Lectures will bore you to death, gives nearly 70 pages of reading for homework, and is the toughest grader I've ever had. Not one student from the class received an A. Always C after C after C... then blames the entire class for it. I'm an A student and my gpa is now a 2.8 because of this class. DO NOT TAKE

I'm glad I dropped his class. I feel much better now. I've never dropped a class before, I had to do it now!!!! I was too stressed/depressed just dealing with his class. The midterm is ridiculously hard. I agree with everyone here. The stress level in his class reaches the maximum. I can't wait to finish and get out of here. This is thee most horrible semester I have ever had. I spent 4 hours straight studying and still don't feel prepare. Mind me, I go over my notes EVERYDAY and it is still a nightmare. HORRIBLE

He is a nice person to talk to. Hence, he is not clear when explaining what he prefers on papers and exams. Overall, yes, it's a tough class that requires a lot of your time. And to top it of, he is a tough grader. Nonetheless, if you "love" history this is the class for you! If you dont, or are unsure, I'd say to stay back. Good luck :)

I am constantly lost by his ambiguous wording. 40 terms that you must memorize like a robot. He only chooses ten. You pick 5 out of the ten. Explaining very detailed in-depth each term. Aside from that, you have to write an essay. He gives two of them you pick one. Both are boring topics! This is for Midterm & finals. 2 ten pg papers is apart.

I have a high GPA, this Prof. made it impossible for me to get a good grade, even though I was one of the best in class. He'll give you feedback and once you apply it to the paper, he'll still give you a C. His tests are ridiculous. Even when you know all the answers, you'll still get a B-. No matter how much work you'll put it, it wont pay off.

Thank you, professor, for ruining my GPA! Up to this point, I had nothing but A's (I'm an honors student) As an honors student, I work for my grades. Hence, it was impossible to get anything beyond a B. A good professor can identify a good student, and you obviously didn't. Students: Do not take him as you history professor. You will regret it...

If you understand the style, you should pass with no problem. Anticipate a ton of reading and some lectures may be boring. HW is weekly discussion questions on lecture/readings and we only had 2 exams - mid-term & final, and a 10-page thesis paper. Don't be fooled you can get by on the least amount of work; participation in class is vital.

I wouldn't recommend him not even to my worst enemy. It is my last semester and I have never met a professor in BMCC so harsh at grading. Furthermore, a professor who cannot identify students who cares to succeed. I studied day in and day out, and still my grade wasn't reflected. Hated every minute in his class. And you will too!

I took His 102 with prof. Alex and received a C (after working extremely hard for my grade). I decided to take the class again with Gerard Clock and received my well desired A. Moral of the story, do not risk your GPA with him because in the end, it doesn't matter how hard you work in his class. He will never give you the grade you worked for

The class starts full to the max. By the end of the first month there are a little less than half. By the end of the second month there are only 15 students. By finals week there are only 6. I was one of them. And wished I had dropped when I had the time. I will retake the class again. Gave me a D. Oh! And he is super boring.

He needs to check within himself, and analyze why there are so many students disagreeing in his teaching methodology. A subject shouldn't be frightening and harsh to the students, that is, if the subject is taught within those concepts. He needs to be more clear if he has high expectations and more clear during classroom discussion.

the way he is teaching really got problems, 20-30 pages of readings before each session and 10 terms out of 40 terms for midterm, not just writing what it means, he needs very details of it, and the significant of the term. next time if i see his name under the course number? i wouldn't think twice to cross it out, just don't take his course.

He is horrible ! Do not take him because he doesn't take the students work into consideration . He also gets carried away within his lectures that he looses track of what we are suppose to be doing !. He only gives you 1 midterm , 1 final and a 10 pg essay with participation points to determine your pass and fail . DO NOT TAKE HIM ,YOU WILL REGRET!

Prof. Alex way of teaching is not one you'd enjoy or learn from. His class is lecture heavy! In the end, you will not learn anything because by the middle of the semester, you will lose hope/interest in this class. Also his tests as well as how he grades, it is very confusing just like his class. I suggest you look elsewhere!!!

Yes, this class is lecture heavy and all college classes are based on lecture itself. Needless to say, I enjoy a class where the professor lectures and I take notes. However, Prof. Alex is all over the place and when you study with your "own" notes, you are lost in space due to the aforementioned. I have A's in harder classes except for this one-

I took him for my first semester and let me tell you it was the worst mistake! His class must be taken at the very last when you do not have so many classes and thus, have time to study (because you'll need a lot of time to study). I totally do not recommend him for many reasons: tough grader, inconsiderate, and super boring!

I didn't like his way of teaching. Teaching should be based on a collaborative learning for the students and not teacher centered. He does not welcome students ingangement in the lesson for he is the only one doing all the talking. As a learner, I do not enjoy or take advantage of this way of teaching.

Not sure how Prof. D'Erizans is still able to teach here. My friends warned me about him, but I figured that it couldn't be as bad as they said, NOPE its that bad and maybe even worse. He must have tenure because just about every student in class was either confused or dropped his class. This professor is the worse option. Take anyone else.

At one point in my life I doubted myself and it all happened after I took his class. In the end I got a C. Not even a B+ or B- but a flat out C! It is incredible how my transcript the only C I have is his class while the rest are A's. ALL my professors saw my potential EXECPT for him. Oh, and I have to see him in PTK honors society- ugh

If I was his supervisor and sat in his class to observe him teach, he would be in the line to be fire! Just by watching how students are not engaged in his lesson should be enough to come to a conclusion. Imagine, he does this for the entire semester. Plus, half the class drops "for no reason." No matter how hard I just could not get back into the hang of things in this class after I took a vaca. This class was only difficult to me because I lost focus. Okay.. the class itself is NOT difficult! It is the way and style of this professor that makes the content confusing. Midterms & Finals are confusing because when he describes a specific term during the beginning of the semester, he goes off tangent but expect for you to delve thourougly on these tests. I honestly don't know how he's still employed with BMCC after every semester students drop the class and a majority that stay end up getting C, D, and F's. Never again! Im confused as to how his rating here is so low. The class is lecture heavy yes. However, he lectures very well in a sense that he provides a story into the time period of history he talks about. He also thoroughly answers questions you would have in class. What I like about this professor is that he is passionate on the subject.

Alex D'Erizans teaches in a style in which he really doesn't care about what you do outside of class, just so long as you participate and do the reading. My main problem is the grading. He's not a bad professor or a bad guy, hes just an awful grader. That's honestly his only real bad feature.

Even though he said he wanted my class to be in history 201 with him the majority didn't even get a C , you can not be quite in his class he requires people to participate and read a lot. Professor DErizans was very nice. Yes he grades hard but he gives you everything you need to pass. If youre not serious about college or you enrolled expecting to be able to skip or sleep through classes then hes not for you. He must of offered extra credit for these positive reviews because everyone is class felt overwhelmed. We would all discuss dropping the class, or try to stick it through the end. Half dropped, other whom stayed regretted staying. It was not a good experience, but I'm glad it's over and I graduated. Take someone else, plenty of better options.

I didn't mind that he was a tough grader, I've had professors like that, but he makes it extremely hard for you to pass with a good grade when he only gives three assignments. He would talk the whole 1 hour & 45 min & expect us to take notes. I loved his class. I took his course online and learned so much. You're in college, so expect to work. No classes should be just giving you an easy slide. He gives you lots of chances to raise your grade. He gives you all the readings and notes and review sheets with all the parts that will be on the midterm and a final. Just put in the extra work

This Professor loves history (history course after all right?), but that passion does not translate through his lectures. He talks at you rather than trying to engage the room. He has his favorites which often get special attention (my pet peeve) and he has an adversarial nature if you disagree or question him. TL;DR - Choose someone/anyone else.

He isn't a terrible professor. However it's difficult to understand what he wants. It seems like he is looking for very specific answer or responses. His communication can come across a little high-brow, considering the audience, but if you can get past that, you can learn a lot from the course. This professor is very impressed with himself. He rambles. Weekly essays on chapter questions. My first two essays I got B's, but when I figured out what he wanted, which was to elaborate ad nauseam, I got A's on the rest of the essays. I took the online class. Not sure why he has so many bad reviews, but the professor was very flexible and extremely responsive. I missed a question on the midterm and he followed up with me and allowed me to submit the answer via email. If you read the main course textbook and provide detailed responses you should do well. Took the asynchronous course. The professor is flexible and understanding. Responds quickly and even helped me get a cheaper textbook. So much reading, lots of homework, and the midterm and final exams are just ridiculous. You have to prepare at least 25 key terms of about 250 words each to make sure that you will find those terms in the exam (90 minutes to complete and 1 attempt!), plus one full paper. I got an A, but it was a lot of hard work. I would not take this class again!

I've taken 2 Asynch classes with this professor. He is very informative and communicative. As an online class, I never felt alone or lost. He is always available to answer qst. He posts videos for the curriculum. I def recommend you take this if your major is History. He's my favorite professor, just do your work. You're in college.

I don't know why he has such low ratings, but his class is great. Taking an online class with him and everything is very organized, 2 discussion board questions a week (and no having to reply to others thankfully because those are useless) and midterm and final. He shares short texts and audio recordings related to topics weekly.
