He's headed in the right direction...
What a nutcase! But he's so funny-class is entertaining if nothing else...
tough, but nice
This guy is the biggest nerd I've ever seen. He played a Quake III demo on the first day. wth? His lectures are so boring I don't go anymore, just go to the discussion groups.
Very fun and good course taught well by a young and energetic prof. Quake was great! Not nerdy at all except that he knows how to use technology I guess.
very interesting class...
he's really passionate about what he's teaching. it's nice because he's young and enthusiastic about everything. lots of notes and he doesn't wait for you to finish copying down. His course website is good though, with lots of online study guides.
Alex is a way cool prof. He's easy going and so passionate about literature. He used modern examples to help us understand 8th century literature. He really challenges his students.
Pretty good prof, explained things well, gave you time to look over questions for in-class essays so u could prepare arguments and quotes. One class that u don't really fall asleep in, very enthusiastic about the material.

Very hard class, expected us to know a lot of background info just because he does, although he is VERY knowledgable. And whoever thought he was hot...!?!
Don't get on his bad side(hehe), but he is nice! Puts TONNES of notes on the overhead and you have no time to copy them, and you really dont need them, just sit back and listen. I STONGLY advise going to the LAST CLASS!
class was insane hard. hes an interesting prof, and talks about cool stuff.. but his papers and mts are compleley irrelevent to lectures. very hard teacher.
hilarious, very entertaining. also very helpful during office hours. his expectations might be a bit heavy though...
lives up to his last name. doesn't teach 'romantics' teaches other stuff-'sensiblities'. new prof-expects way too much. thinks his class is the center of the university and not very open to other people's ideas if they are not the same as his. not good.
Knows his stuff but likes to hear his own voice, either coming out of his mouth or yours. Not much room for interpretation or free thought. A LOT OF READING. You can get a lot out of it, but BE PREPARED.
This is a very challenging class, he has high expectations, engaging lectures.. but be warned... there is a lot of readings which are either hard, or very boring.... This class passes by fast, but it is really hard!

EXTREMELY BAD TEACHER ALERT! This guy is extremely unfriendly out of class, he expects you to just regurgitate his notes when writing in-class essays, and doesn't go deep into lit. The only good that came out of this cource was that i had a GREAT TA!
Learned a lot. Tough, but fair. C'mon ppl, comments to his name are pathetic - If u got a bad mark, it's ur own damn fault. Good lecturer & helps out a lot. May seem intimidating, but that's cuz he knows his ****.
Very clearly outlines what he expects for assignments. Completely approachable and helpful. Class discussions are open and interesting. I never found him to be arrogant or closed-minded, he's very careful to treat students ideas with respect.

He acts as if he accepted your opinion, but in fact, he disagrees with you before you even open your mouth. He lives in disguise. Knowledgable but no more than other profs. If you can choose, don't choose him.
Bad Bad Bad Prof. He doesn't allow you to use dictionary during exam while other profs do.
Intelligent, wry, and ultimately, a nice guy. He'll go out of his way to help you on assignments -- which mind you, aren't easy -- but, you'll feel like you learned something at the end of the day. And isn't that the whole point?
agreeing with other comments- he loves to hear his own voice in your essays, boring reading, and hard class. He offers lots of help but is still unclear the whole way through.
I try to listen to him in class (I REALLY DO) but it's just soooo hard NOT to zone out! he just keeps goin and going and going and goin.... AHHHHH! if the class was only 50 min it wouldn't have been so bad but two hours of Dr. Dick is just WAY too much!
He's alright, I guess. He does try to be informative in the lectures but sometimes he doesn't really succeed in making sure that the students understand what he's saying. Not the best prof in the world but certainly not the worst.
His passion for teaching is very refreshing. Very intelligent and informative prof. Great class.
Fun, normal

I actually liked this class and him but I could see where people wouldn't. Exam was shockingly easy, he is a hard marker with paper's though. However, if you go to him in office hours he is VERY helpful. If you are planning to be an English major take him. He get's you ready for the upper years.
For those of you who are badmouthing him, you obviously never went to his office hours. Prof. Dick is a really nice guy and extremely helpful if you give him a chance. Yes, not an EASY marker, but by no means unfair. Overall good course considering the material he has to work with.
Hmmm, to the poster who misspelled "papers," I can sorta see why he would a brutal marker. ;) I thought he was awesome myself. Cool guy, very helpful in office hours.
Generally a very good teacher, but he doesn't give out assignment details until two weeks before they're due. In addition, he blew up at a few students on two occassions, making everyone feel uncomfortable.
Dick is an arrogant man who is only interested in his own research. He expects people to kiss his ass just because he has a PHD after his name. Smart man, horrible professor.
This class falls into his area of interest and it shows. Very energetic lectures with lots of encouragement for anyone who participates. Expectations can be a little vague, but is easily approachable outside of class. Marks not exactly easy, but not terribly picky about minor errors either.
interesting perspective, and makes you question your reasoning
Dr. Dick is probably one of the best profs I have ever had. Extremely intellegent, talented lecturer, and helpful. Challenges you with paper topics, but is always available for feedback. He definitely ain't perfect (he assigns group projects, always a tedious exercise in meeting over-achievers, under-achievers, morons), but he has a lot to offer.
Unfriendly...

Good prof! Lectures are fun
Hard paper marker, but willing to help with papers in office hours. If you want a good paper grade definatley show him your draft!
Knows what he is talking about and offers great insights. Encourages discussion and is open to new perspectives. Not boring and a nice guy. Assigns group projects...might get stuck with crazy ppl and share their mark unfortunetly.

brilliant professor! he challenges you really to examine the works - if you like to think and you want to be passionate about what you're learning, take a class with him. yeah, he starts out abbrassive, but it's so worth it; you take so much out of his class!
In short, a really funky prof. Sets a high standard for his students. He has some pretty interesting insights into things. I enjoyed reading one of the books for class, The Jade Peony. :o)
Great teacher, you can tell he is extremely passionate about the subject. Good reading material in this class, and if you don't understand it he explains everything in lectures. Group projects are assigned, which can be a little frusturating.
because of Dr.Dick, I now enjoy literature and have become more critical in all my thinking.
this prof is great- he's interested and knowledgable in the subject and he shows it. His poetry project seems tough at first, but in the end it's just easy marks. His final is fair, but not extremely easy. Halfway through the course, he changed from putting notes up on overheads to using powerpoint- tremendous difference. Good choice of novels!
He's very demanding, doesn't establish the best classroom atmosphere and over-emphasizes group work -who wants to be taught by students?- but I really felt that I'd tangibly improved after taking his class.
This class has diminished my passion for the subject, but it's probably just because we essentially did Frankenstein for the entire term. Lecture was a hostile atmosphere for discussion and it seemed like he surrounded himself with a Charlie's Angels-esque wall of TAs. However, he is a passionate, effective lecturer. There's no ignoring that.
teaching assistant is awful!!!!! made me want to avoid the class like the plague
This class was very interesting. He encouraged class discussion a lot, and everyone was really insightful. The prof goes really in depth and also goes off on tangents (but in a good way) when analyzing the literature. I thought he was really easy, and seemed really nice.
Professor made me realize that Mary Shelley is a genius, and Frankenstein something of a work of art. He also introduced me to Plath who is now my favorite poet, hand down. He's so insightful, really puts a lot of work into his lectures and encourages class discussion. He also uses a mix of mediums to keep things interesting. LOVED HIM
Excellent prof, very though-provoking but also open to opinions. He will challenge you though; definitely not a class for slackers.
He's arrogant and quick to judge. He's one of those professors who is likely a much better academic than teacher. He appears to base his marking on technical mechanics, versus the 'meat' of your argument per se. I would not recommend this course unless you have few opinions of your own and are happy to acquiess to his ridiculous standards.
He's a really nice guy. Willing to help you with questions. But his lectures can be a little boring, although they are chock full of information. Definitely do need to attend lectures in order to understand some of his points.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Funny, interesting, and doesn't treat the class like you're still in high school--willing to communicate ideas to the class that might actually take a little reading and thinking about. Avoid if you're stupid and/or lazy, basically.
Worse mark in my university degree. TAs marked really hard and the final exam was tough
He's very good at teaching you how to read literature at a university level rather than a high school one. A little bit of effort goes a very long way. Would take again.
Sometimes his language can be confusing, which makes notes hard to parse, but he's a genuinely kind guy. He's knowledgeable and sensitive about minority issues, including women's and queer rights, which was a major plus when it came to discussion and lectures. He's very understanding if you need extensions, too.
Started the course passionate about the Romantics and left mentally checked out of that era. Besides Byron, I would rather be skinned alive than read some of those texts again. I got back one of the major essays with a C and the comments literally only discussed my grammar. Didn't felt like he personally cared about us. GROUP. PROJECTS. BEWARE!
He genuinely cares about his students and wants us to do well, but he does have very specific expectations for papers and assignments. Don't try to halfass your way in his course, you will suffer. Very smart and knowledgeable man, I enjoyed his lectures and the course in general. He tries to prepare you for grad school which is helpful.
He's pretty clear in giving lectures and he can be funny when he wants to be. His book choices are great. He and his TAs have very clear guidelines on what they expect on the essays. as long as you show up in class and pay attention you'll pretty much conquer the class.
He is an insightful man, and have critical opinions about the materials. attendance is not mandatory but he does not post lectures on connect and the notes are essential for understanding the course. work load is not heavy, 3 papers for the entire semester. great prof in general.
He is literally amazing I am thrilled to listen to his lectures I'm not even registered in his class but auditing becomes mandatory after the first time I heard him It's like way up higher than my usual class' level and if you are lucky you will meet an amazing group of intelligent classmates you will LOVE their conversations with the prof.
Great prof with really engaging lectures! I do agree, the material covered in lecture is not necessarily needed in order to do well in the course. But, his lectures are interesting and his book choices are great! Such a great prof and fun course!
One of my favourite profs ever! I looked forward to going to lectures and took notes constantly, not just because I thought they'd be useful to bring up on papers/the exam, but because his opinions and ideas were crazy interesting and made me think way more than any other English course I've taken ever has! Highly recommend, it was a great course!!
Lectures didn't really help. I skipped a solid chunk of lectures and still did fine. Found him to be a bit pretentious. He used obscure words that many first-year students would not have in their vocabulary. Could've made his lectures more digestible, especially since many students didn't have a choice to take the course--was a degree requirement.
He really knows his stuff, so be prepared to really work to understand the theory he teaches. He starts off the year with a tough assignment but it really shows you how much he cares when you read all the feedback he gives on it and by the end of the term, if you put in the work, you'll get a lot out of his class.
Alex is a nice guy and is pretty understanding about extensions but that's all I can really say about him. He is terribly boring and the texts he chooses are boring as well. Normally I don't have problems with writing discussion posts since it's not that much work but god do I despise this course and regret taking it. Unfortunately it's mandatory.
I've never felt inclined to write a rmp review about a professor, but Alex was such a magnificent prof, that I feel that it's only fair to hype him up online. Romantic poetry is certainly not in my realm of expertise, but Alex was very helpful in guiding me through the challenging aspects. Go to his office hours, you'll have a great time!
Alex is a king! He is so funny and kind, and puts so much effort into his lectures. He builds relationships with students, he is accomodating and he wants you to do well in his class. He had great reads selected for the class. Taking him again next year and you should too! His TA last term - Oliver Bedard, was also awesome.
Dr. Dick is highly knowledgable on a wide range of theory, and his lectures are engaging and intellectual. Not the kind of classes you can get away with zoning out in (nor would you, as his enthusiasm is infectious). Take his classes if you are genuinely interested in learning new perspectives.
I can see myself attending Alex's lectures even without being in his class, his style of lecture is an engaging “performance” and includes such interesting views on texts read in the course. However, I did find reading so many texts revolving around Frankenstein daunting at times.. Grading will depend on your section's TA.
dr. dick is awesome - knowledgeable, funny, gives great lectures, and genuinely cares about his students. his lectures are mainly discussion based and his assignments and grading are fair (grp proj, solo proj, final paper, participation, no final). engl majors will do fine - others may find it difficult (he expects a command of literary concepts).
Good overall, but I don't really attend lectures. You can still get a good grade without attending them. Also, Olivier is the BEST TA!
It is disappointing that, in an institution that prides itself on fostering "an educational space that invites divergent viewpoints on contentious subjects," a professor such as Dr. Dick has to instruct. Class is like Plato's Cave, but everyone has seen the outside world and pretends they haven't because Dr. Dick is really keen about his cave.
With a class like "detective fiction," I wish the assignments were more short story-based, rather than writing essays about other authors. This class should be interesting, and while I think Alex is a really nice person, his lectures, unfortunately, are extremely boring.
Loves what he is teaching, weird but interesting class. Prepare to read A LOT. I had to pirate 90% of the books or ask around for free PDFs, but if you want to buy them, do it as soon as you can they will disappear like the wind. Attendance is not mandatory. Study the lectures and pray you get a good TA (mine was STRICT)
He made some of the readings somewhat more interesting and really dived deep between the words. Most of the grading is done by TAs
A good professor but the course itself was boring. The majority of our grade comes from in-class essays, and lectures weren't really useful. Worst part was the TA; Oliver Bedard. He's the most pretentious person I've ever met. He gave two weeks worth of confusing lectures and was unnecessarily passive aggressive on essay feedback. Ruined it for me
