Alex tries to make lectures entertaining, and knows the material. He was very good at answering questions both in class and during his office hours. Be prepared to take notes in class, as the notes posted online are incomplete. Overall, a good prof who obviously likes his job.
Great instructor, passionate about all things geology! I have had him for a few classes at a few schools now so I can safely say study for those exams, your gonna write an awful lot!
Dutchak is an amazing prof. He should probably give other profs a "how to teachlecture 101" seminars because he gets everyone engaged in the lecture. I dont have the best class attendance, but I would never miss his classes. Definitely take a class with him
Alex is a really awesome prof. In the midst of a semester of pretty terrible profs Alex was the highlight of my day. He was funny, and genuinely wanted his students to do well. The geology department should have more profs like Alex.
Very interesting to listen to and makes the course fun and actually not at all boring in my opinion. Highly recommended
Dutchak is a great guy and is genuinely funny. But be warned, GLGY 209 is no longer 'rocks for jocks'. You'll have to work to get an A in this class. The tests involve a fair bit of application so you need to be able to understand and apply concepts.
You really do need to go to class. He is very straight forward on what you need to know. Go to class, study, and you will do great.
Takes time to explain difficult topics. Works through the material in a way that is easy to remember. He's Hilarious. Super refreshing in the sense that he is super motivated and excited to teach. Could be a model. Very inspiring, knows how to ingage students. Notes are perfection. Encourages you. Wonderful.
Overall, this course was pretty easy. Made learning about rocks surprisingly enjoyable
Great Prof, fill in the blanks from the notes in class, study that and a bit of the textbook and you will do just fine. Very straight forward prof and class. Recommended highly !
Fun prof! Takes time to explain difficult concepts, and very good at answering questions in class. Answers emails promptly, and makes time to answer questions if you stop by his office.
Super funny and seems thrilled to be teaching class, notes aren't filled in so you have to attend class. Tests are mostly from his slides - textbook isn't the most necessary but is definitely helpful.
This is definitely no longer a "Rocks For Jocks" course. Many took this class expecting an easy A and fell quite short. Geology 209 with Dutchak turned out to be quite time consuming. Although the class was hard, Dutchak did a great job in making it entertaining and finding a way in making me want to show up to class everyday. Put the time in.
Its not an extremely hard class, but you have to put in the work. Even though the notes are posted online he leaves blanks so you have to go to class. as well as he uses top hat, so gotta go to class for that too! Its straightforward stuff just study HARD for the midterms and final if you want that A. But a good lecturer and a super funny guy! :)
Best prof I have had at U of C. Dutchak is hilarious and makes lectures interesting. I find it pretty hard to make rocks interesting but manages to do it. Tests are fair, but there is a lot of material to learn. I don't normally rate my profs but I needed to express how awesome Dutchak is! Thanks for an awesome semester. Suggest taking this class!
This guy is a beauty. I have been in University for a long time and he was hands down my favorite. Anyone on here who says it is no longer rocks for jocks and not an easy A just didn't follow the hints or can't grasp science. Yes there is lots to know but if you follow the learning goals and understand how to beat multiple choice exams, easy A.
Above all, he wants you leaving the class having learned some valuable information. This class is so interesting and I would definitely take it again. Easy A if you just love science and attend classes. Such a funny prof and he's such a "dad", goofy jokes and he makes the huge lecture room burst into laughter every lecture. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Alex is a great prof with hilarious lectures. His tests were all MC which was great. you need to attend class in order to receive the full notes, otherwise be prepared to read the textbook. He moves a little fast, but is always willing to explain or help out later.
Absolutely fantastic prof, his enthusiasm for geology is so great that its contagious. Lectures were always hilarious, and even the most boring subjects were made interesting. Exams were all MC, not too difficult if you put in some time and read the textbook. Would definitely recommend this class.
GLGY 209 was a science requirement for my arts degree. Thoroughly enjoyed his lectures and fully recommend his class to anyone who wants to learn about rocks.
he's ok. 1010 would recommend.
Dutchak is great. He's hilarious (and very sassy) and surprisingly passionate about incredibly dry material. Be prepared for tests - I got an A+ on the midterms without reading the textbook, but that's only because I memorized the lecture notes forwards and backwards. The final is cumulative and a ridiculous amount of material - so start early.
It's obvious that he enjoys teaching and so the quality of instruction is awesome. This is not an easy A class, though. Be prepared to go to class and put in a fair amount of study time.
Dutchak is a really good guy, but his expectations for GLGY 209 are ridiculous. Students are taking this class as a GPA booster hence the nickname "rocks for jocks". I had a B+ going into the final and I attended all lectures and I still need to put in 2 full days of studying before the final. If you want an easy A take it with another prof.
Awesome prof overall
Dutchak is hands down the best prof at U of C. This is my final semester of my degree and honestly he makes me want to come back and do a geology degree. He is so enthusiastic and so funny! His exams are fair and they're pretty easy if you go to class and study his notes. Definitely take this class with him if you can!
Great prof, you have to participate for the note taking. optional to attend class if you prefer to study by yourself reading the book, but the class is worth to go. Dr. Dutchak is very funny and explains the course materials nicely.
Dr. Dutchak is an amazing prof! First of he is hilarious! Glgy 209 was such an enjoyable class and his tests are very fair with no trick questions whatsoever. Class is recommended because he only posts skeleton slides and does top hat in class. Textbook was helpful but not worth the money imo.
Amazing prof! He's one of the profs who enjoys teaching, so his class is very interesting and fun! Exams aren't that hard, but make sure you attend class 'cuz notes are fill-in-the-blank. Barely had to look at the textbook but good to refer to for more explanation. Overall a great and hilarious person. Would definitely take another class with him!
Not rocks for jocks; but do your reading and you'll do really well.
Overall awesome guy. Lectures are mandatory since he posts skeleton slides (you have to fill in the notes), textbook is not really required. Extremely helpful and really wants his students to do well in both academics and life. Definitely not "rocks for jocks", but if you work hard, you'll do well.
One of the best profs I've ever had! He's super funny and his lecture notes are straightforward and easy to understand and he always makes jokes which end up sticking in your head to help you during the tests. Top hat actually helps in the understanding of the topics, and sometimes those questions appears on the tests. Wish he taught everything!
Mr. Dutchak was a great prof! He is hilarious and loves to teach! He really wants his students to understand concepts and see the value in them! He is willing to help explain concepts further. Top hat is used. Course is not an easy A which he lets you know. Attendance is mandatory to fill in slides and make sure you understand content before tests.
Dr. Dutchak is clearly very passionate about teaching, he keeps the lectures entertaining even when the content may be a bit dull. Very approachable and kind and often points out the most important things that may show up on the tests. Lecture slides are incomplete to attendance is recommended, but the textbook isn't bad so you can get by on that
He always makes lectures interesting and legitimately cares about students There is a lot of reading but worth it for preparing for his lectures. His funny quips add to the experience. A mus to take a course with him. You must be a driven student to succeed.
Class was interesting, but not the easiest A you will get. Just go to class and pay attention for the most part, memorize the slides, and skim the textbook where things are unclear and you have the A. Funny prof, fun class, would recommend!
hE SO looks like Ryan Reynolds and if you say otherwise, you are wrong. Great feedback. Makes the class enjoyable. Hilarious jokes xD
Talks loud good teach
Dutchak is fantastic. He wants you to do well in the course (and future courses) but definitely makes you work for it. This course has a ton of material and labs are difficult if you haven't done the readings, though Dutchak made this one of my favorite courses.
Great lectures. Actually cares about our success. Willing to answer any questions. This is a man that is very good at a job he loves.
Very engaged. Excellent lectures, well prepared and presented. Engaging and often funny.
Great guy! Easily my favorite course taken in university with the best professor I've had so far. Really energetic and keeps everyone interested in the subject. I hope I get him again for future courses.
Best prof ever! funny , intuitive and gives clear expectations for this course. Overall, you can tell teaching is a passion of his. He made this class more interesting and I actually looked forward to his lectures. Good job
Dr. Dutchak is the most metal thing to happen to geology since banded iron formations. He's very smart, really funny and extremely passionate about geology. You'll have 6 geology sites on your instagram feed by the end of the term.
Super fun prof, but GLGY 201 was not enjoyable. Cares about his students and gives good lectures. If you have to take GLGY 201, make sure Dutchak is teaching part of it. Labs also suck.
Alex is one of my favorite profs, although his tests are extremely hard, he makes very dry subjects interesting and forces students to engage in learning the topic matter. pay attention in class
Don't take this guy for granite, or you will have a rocky time. He is super gneiss, has funny and engaging lectures. Make sure you go to class and he will do the rest. Rock on - The other finance kids
I've had him for 3 classes now. He is passionate about anything related to geology, this makes classes a pleasure to attend. His exams are very difficult, especially for this class.
Science is not my strong point, but Dr. Dutchak taught a great class, as his lectures were engaging and funny. Attendance is a must; textbook is not necessary. He usually responds to emails within 24 hrs, and is approachable for conversation. He has integrity and treats students fairly. If I had to take another science I would take it with him.
Alex is hilarious, he knows what he's talking about and seems passionate about teaching. Don't skip his classes or you WILL NOT PASS I guarantee it. Also go to the labs as well, I learned a lot there. His lecture tests are hard because they involve critical thinking, not verbatim definitions. Go to his office hours, he will explain stuff well.
Alex is obviously excited about the subject matter, and tries to pass that on to the class. He requires students to be mature and self-motivated, so some people are skipping lab and bombing it. If you have questions, he's pretty easy to talk to, and good at explaining concepts.
Man of substance who makes every lecture count. Even when you have not done your homework it is still worth showing up because he likes to throw in a good joke or anecdote to give everybody's day a boost. Approachable and empathetic when you're worried about your GPA and show up in office hours to try and skrimp extra marks.
GLGY 493. One of the things he is good at is getting the class involved. Even when faced with 100 blank faced mutes, man of steel still throws the questions out there and 9 times out of 10 will get a bite. Loves geology and is an enthusiastic lecturer. Finds good ways to relate the subject material to every day stuff, making it more memorable!
Dutchak is an amazing prof. His classes are interesting especially if you're into Geology. The only problem is he makes really challenging questions. I was a straight A student and still only manage to get a B+ and I worked hard. I know a lot of people who still got an A so dont discourage yourself!
I didn't attend all lectures, but for sure attend labs and do all of the lab work. Used the textbook a little bit.
This was my fourth (and last) class with Alex, and to be honest it was pretty tough. Took I as a Geology option for my degree and regretted it deeply. Alex is usually an amazing, enthusiastic lecturer although this course was extremely lecture heavy and I felt as if concepts weren't explained clearly at all.
This was my 3rd class with this prof, and he is very consistent: good lectures, tough tests, and clear communication in terms of expectations. This was a tough class because the material was outside of my main area of focus, and there was a lot of detail. Still one of the best profs in the department!
Ive had Dutchak for 3 courses so far, and he is very passionate about the courses he teaches. This course requires a decent amount of work but his goal is for you to learn and be able to apply the content to whichever field you are interested in. Very respected prof and is one of the reasons why I chose to pursue this program. Highly recommend
Alex was a terrific professor. Very interesting and has very detailed slides. Go into labs after hours and read the notes thoroughly 3-4 times before each test and you will do good. Textbook definitely not mandatory, I cracked it open once but not super useful. He's not afraid to grade curve so don't stress about a low mark at the end
Lots of paper, tough grader
Just an overall great guy. He's funny, likes to interact with the students and seems like he genuinely enjoys teaching. It is important to attend class because he explains a lot in lass, but his way of teaching makes learning enjoyable so the 3 hour lectures are fine. Just a beauty
Dutchak is a great professor for intro geology courses but he is so out of his depth teaching structure. This class is notorious for failure and its not because of the material but rather the inability of professors to teach structure to students effectively. You would think that things would change but nope!
Easily the best prof I've ever had. Absolutely hilarious and makes the entire class super interesting. Class always goes by super quick because he is so engaging, explains everything so well, and always has you laughing. Put in some practice outside of class and you will do well.
He's so funny and gives really amazing lectures! I am a non-major student and he makes it really easy to understand the material despite this being an online class :)
He made an online course very worthwhile. Havent had a prof so excited about teaching in a while
Made the first full semester of online classes very enjoyable. Can not wait to go to the Tyrrell Museum with the new knowledge I have obtained from Dr. Dutchak.
Dr. Dutchak is a really great person, his lectures are thoroughly engaging and he makes the content easy to understand and very enjoyable. There were some issues of students cheating in the course, which made me feel very bad for the professor because of how much effort he was putting in to teach the course. Thank you Dr. Dutchak for your hard work
Dr. Dutchak is a great professor, definitely my favourite. If you study and pay attention in his lectures a good grade is easy. His tests are very forgiving and textbook is not required. He has a great sense of humour and his lectures are very engaging.
Easily my favorite prof, makes you laugh and actually enjoy the class. Easy to understand lectures and a genuine love of teaching makes Dutchak an easy choice when picking out classes!
Dr. Dutchak is a great prof. He makes class fun and interesting and seems to understand that we have other classes to deal with (despite all his jokes about travelling to look at rocks). The labs kind of suck, but his lectures are probably the best part of my day.
Dutchak was very invested in helping students enjoy a subject they might not otherwise be very interested in. This was the case for me, also his teaching style highlighted the important aspects we needed to know for exams, making the course a breeze. (FYI Labs in this class are a bit garb)
Not overly into Geology but Dr. Dutchak made the course so interesting. I went to him for help after I did poorly on my first test and he was very helpful and caring. I think students would be a lot less stressed out at University if all profs were like him. The labs can be tricky and you definitely need to pay attention/study for those.
Dr. Dutchak gave really good lectures, he was detailed while making them interesting. I never wanted to skip a class! The tests werent super difficult, read through the notes and attend the lectures and youll be fine. The labs, however, can be tricky and that is where the majority of people i talked to lost marks. Overall a good class!
Dr. Dutchaks lectures are very easy to follow and understand. If you miss a class he puts the lecture slides on d2l. He prepares the class very well for the exams. I found there is very little stress in this class. Only assignments are the labs, which can be a bit tricky, the rest is just exams which if you pay attention youll do fine.
He's cool. One of those rare profs who actually teach stuff and make lectures less miserable. Would take classes with him again.
Dr Dutchaks lectures were really entertaining and he presented everything in a way that would be easy to understand and made jokes throughout class. Tests were pretty easy, this is just an intro course so it was just multiple choice tests. Really great class I honestly learned a lot. But he does go through topics very quick so u gotta write fast
Awesome prof, I really looked forward to his class. He does have a darker sense of humour, I found it really funny but just be prepared if you dont enjoy sarcastic/darker jokes.
Intro geology courses are easy but he is not good in teaching harder courses.
He's so nice... on our last day of class he showed us a powerpoint of a bunch of pretty pictures from his colleagues about what part of their job they love. Also told us not to worry about our midterm grades and that we shouldn't get caught up in the little things.
Super funny and engaging professor. He was clear with instructions and lessons and made it fun
Best professor of all time. He explains concepts so well and is really funny. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
I love this guy, super funny and can make even the most confusing content engaging and interesting. It's obvious how passionate he is about the topics he teaches and you can tell that he genuinely cares about his students. Dutchak is a big part of why I'm transferring to geology.
Lectures are easy to follow along and tests are super fair. Just beware of the labs and the lab exams.
Dr. Dutchak is an awesome prof. I absolutely love his sense of humor, and truly look forward to his lectures which he makes enjoyable and entertaining. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His exams are fair, the hardest part of the course is the labs. I've learned a lot and would 100% take again!!!
I Honestly never thought I'd care about rocks, but Prof. Dutchak makes learning about the earth fun. He is very thorough, but doesn't overcomplicate subjects. Lecture attendance is important as he likes to throw in helpful fun facts that aren't in the presentations on d2l.
Really engaging lectures, make sure to show up to them because he says important things that aren't on the slides. Take your time in labs, as the lab assignments are a lot easier than the lab midterm and final. Really you should make an effort to learn things in lab, it could make or break your grade in the class. The labs themselves are pretty fun
Super nice guy and fast at answering questions outside of class
This class was awesome, showing up is totally worth it. You'll learn a lot about the world in an interesting, fun way - geology isn't just rocks!! I've had a blast and will really miss the class. Many of us in the course have said he's our favorite prof. If you ever see this Dr. Dutchack, thanks for everything!
He's such a nice prof. I have a new appreciation for rocks thanks to this class, as well as an urge to either make a comic for the new superhero, Miss Magma, or start a band called Thingvellir. I also plan to tell people whether or not their counter tops are made of granite, and bug everyone by pausing movies to explain sand dune structures.
Dr.Dutchak is an amazing professor, even though rocks are very boring to me. He made every lecture interesting and you could see how passionate he was about his work as a professor and as a geologist. Sadly, the lab portion of this course is what made my grades fall so try to do well on them.
Dr. Dutchak is amazing! He is very supportive and passionate. I loved the labs, and he posts all of his notes online which makes the lectures easy to follow and catch up on. I recommend his class to everyone, even if your are not in majoring in geoscience.
Amazing professor! His lectures were very engaging and he was very passionate about what he taught. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Dr.Dutchak was fantastic and a great professor. He explained every concept with clarity and with enthusiasm. He is respected during lectures and always adds humor to the class. His exams are good if you reviewed the slides and went to class. Overall not difficult and was easy to learn. The lab component was challenging, study and review a lot.
Alex goes off PowerPoint but his discussion about the topics is where he really shines and makes the class incredibly enjoyable, the amount on his slides is a bit daunting but can be broken down easily. Dr.Dutchak is a great educator and I would recommend him any day of the week.
Dr. Dutchak is an awesome professor, specifically for the Geo 201 course. HIs lectures are entertaining and always kept things interesting. If you were away all the lecture material was accessible and usable to study with for midterms and finals. Testing was never meant to trick you and genuinely meant to test your knowledge. 10/10 would recommend.
King. He is the reason I love this course. He was able to make 9 am lectures entertaining with his clear passion for this subject. His lectures are very clear, and as long as you attend them, exams and labs will be a breeze with a little studying.
Awesome professor. There were a lot of tests (3 lecture exams and 2 lab exams) but the lectures were very engaging, especially the one about fossils.
amazing prof. really nice, really funny and makes lectures enjoyable. he is enthusiastic about what he teaches and makes tests pretty fair. only hard thing Is lab exams, but study hard and you'll do good!
Professor Dutchak was an amazing professor. His lectures were always fun and he seems to really care about his students. The tests were never meant to trick you so as long as you reviewed the material and showed up to class they were easy. The only hard part of this course were the labs but I would definitely take this course with him again.
Best prof!! If you can, take a course from him. The lab sections could be difficult at times, since my lab period covered topics before they were in the lectures, but the midterms and exams were fair and straightforward to study for.
Professor Dutchak is an amazing prof and you can tell he loves what he teaches and wants you to do well. He makes his lectures easy to follow and easy to access so learning the material isnt overwhealming. definetly one of the better professors I've had.
By far the most engaging professor I've had. Genuinely enthusiastic about the topic, gives very clear criteria for course marking and test content, and has in-depth answers for questions asked in class. Dr Dutchak does not get off-topic or go on unrelated tangents, which helps with the clarity of the testable content. 10/10.
Dr. Dutchak was a great professor. He is passionate about his work, which made his lectures engaging and easy to follow. He answered all questions in depth. I would not recommend taking this class as an easy science course. It's not extremely difficult, but make sure you have lots of study time because it is mostly memorization.
Dr. Dutchak is one of the best profs I've had so far, he genuinely cares about what he's teaching, and he wants to make sure his students understand what's being taught. He's also always making jokes and the class was always a good time, the lab section was also a really great addition to the course. Def take it for a fun grade booster!
I had the 9 am lecture, but I still went to every single one just because of him. He's super funny, even on exams, and he's overall a really nice guy. He explains things really well, and as long as you go to the lectures you'll get a good grade. Love this guy so much!
Absolutely hilarious, passionate, and overall great prof. The lecture exams are exactly whats covered in the lectures, so as long as you go to those you should be set. The only thing I would advise is make sure you have a good TA for your lab, my TA was not the best by any stretch of the imagination and I got screwed over by the lab exams...
great prof! his lecture slides can sometimes be confusing to follow especially when doing some last minute cramming but he truly loves what he does and it shows even in a 9am lecture. the labs however can be quite difficult but overall good course!
Very easy class, he makes it so that lectures are entertaining and it's easy to keep up in class. Tests are also pretty easy though the lab assessments are less forgiving than the midterm and final.
Hilarious lectures, and they were taught very well. Labs were a little rough not gonna lie. It was very clear what was to be expected of us on exams, no tricks. He always told us he was there if we needed to talk or anything. Great guy, hope to take another geo class with him eventually.
Dr Dutchak is super passionate about what he teaches, he loves "dead things", Lego, and Star Wars. Great professor and really funny but the lectures are heavy. Labs are difficult but fun once you get the hang of it. Lab exams are weird but alright. All in all great professor and a great class!
dr dutchak is funny and cares about his students. he'll answer as many questions as he can without dragging down the lecture, and he's always able to speak after class if needed. lectures aren't mandatory but if you want to do good, you should go. his lectures are easy to sit through and engaging.
Such fun lectures! He was so compassionate and understanding.
ATTEND LECTURES BC TOPHAT QUESTIONS ARE ON THE EXAMS. Funny guy and clear lectures! I love him sm. Goodluck on the lab exam though if you have a bad TA bc there is no structure and guide on how to study for them.
The class comes with a lab so be prepared for that, it was definitely harder than the lecture content and the lab midterms were also much harder. However the lecture midterms aren't bad he provides a clear guide of what to study for and he's pretty funny and makes lecture interesting, he answers students questions. Not a bad course!
Professor Dutchak makes lectures engaging and easy to follow. Attendance is a must for the TopHat questions. While labs can be tricky, using unstuck AI alongside the textbook helps prep for exams. Overall, a fun and manageable course.
(Earth210) My fav prof by far. He clearly knows his stuff and knows how to teach it too. He made sure the class work was self contained which honestly made me more motivated to focus in class and labs while decreasing stress tons. Labs were interesting and all the TA's I met were also great. Such a fun and fascinating class. He's also hilarious.
(ERTH 210)
Great prof! He is super organized and does an amazing job of teaching the content. Would recommend taking Professor Dutchak for any earth course!
For ERTH 210. This course was very unique with fairly simple lecture content and a lot of hands on learning. Prof. Dutchak was fun considering it was a 9 AM lecture with an abysmal attendance rate. But the class expectations were sometimes unclear, and seemed to change depending on how frustrated Prof. Dutchak was with the lack of class engagement.
He seems to actually love his job. He is smart, funny and clear. Might be the best prof I've had so far.
Dr. Dutchak is a passionate and engaging lecturer with fun slides and contagious enthusiasm for dinosaurs. However, 40% of the grade comes from group tutorials held in the cramped lecture hall (instead of individual classrooms), which made collaboration between 6 people unnecessarily difficult. I ultimately swapped the class before the deadline.
He said 6 7 which low key ruined it for me
funny dude 10/10 would take again
One of THE goats of the geology department. Lectures were almost always engaging and this dude is hilarious, he also gives great resources for heavier topics. His learning outcomes and attendance questions are ACTUALLY helpful guides, too! Whatever they're paying him, it is not enough fr
