Shes a good teacher and cares about her students, the class is fun and she gives a lot of extra credit. The class is different than your typical english class; you study a non-english related subject in depth. For example my class studied Globalization. I highly recomend this teacher.
Very clear and organnized. If you can do what she wants you to do,you will get a pretty good grade. Her grading system is easy, you can get 10% extra credit! So ou just need to get a B for the essays and you can end up with an A!You can learn a lot apart from English, becasue she has a topic(globalization)throughout the class!Highly recommended!
Great teacher! She made the class interesting and fun.
a nice teacher, explains a lot during class so u dont have to work as hard. fun topic. GET THIS TEACHER!
Alex is wonderful. She is clear, succinct, and very active during lectures. She invariably asks for feedback and comments from the students. She gives an additional 10% extra credit and is a fair grader.
Great teacher, really nice and you can tell that she loves to teach. Highly recommend taking her class
She 's the coolest English teacher ever. Highly recommend her.
Take this teacher!! Alex is just wonderful...too many good things to mention, you'll see what I mean.
Alex is a wonderful teacher. Very passionate about her general direction of the class - globalization. It was really fun, and I enjoyed listening in class. You will do fine as long as you do all your work an attend class daily. Highly recommended.
The best english teacher I've had so far. She's very helpful, friendly easy to get comfortable around her and ask questions. She makes her course very interesting, although it's not the easiest I'm glad I took it. If you like POLI, ECON I strongly recommend her class, you will learn so much.
Alex's assignments are very helpful in developing basic foundation for writing. Globalization was a great topic. Most of the students in the class even thought this was their favorite English class ever. She even gives out A+'s when a student's work is outstandingly well deserved
La Pasionaria! The best english teacher in De Anza! Like Bizet's "Carmen," sexy, sensual and funny Alex is so passionate about her subject: Africa and Apartheid, Genocide and AIDS. Be prepared to be seduced into a hypnotic, flamenco, samba, and merengue-grooved, intellectual love affair that will change your life!
she is the best english teacher i've ever had! she really knows how to teach and what to teach her students. her class not only made me learn english but whats happening around us. u can get an A aslong as u show up to class daily and do your work and follow her instructions! highly recommended.
alex is the BEST english teacher! Very nice person. Come to class every day, listen to her, follow directions and you will get an A.
Alex is a very cool and down to earth teacher. She has a laid back personality and effective ways of teaching. I learned a lot more than expected in her class. She is a funny and cheerful english teacher. Highly recommended!
Wonderful teacher. Tells you exactly what she wants
Super cool teacher! She is funny and very helpful! She made me feel like my writing was worth something! She gives great feedback, one time she even wrote "bravo" as a comment on my paper, which I thought was funny. She is very enjoyable!
Alex is great!! Yeah she gives a lot of reading but it's because she wants us to be prepared for university. She gives off a good vibe and is very helpful. I didn't feel like my writing improved much because she doesn't give much feedback on papers but her class is a good way for those of us who want to transfer to prepare for the REAL 4yr world.
helpful, just come to class. assignments: first practice assignment, 1 midterm in class essay, 1 group project, 1 quick 3 page essay, and 1 final 4-pg essay. there's two quizzes-very easy group quiz. overall a dry theme for the class (mine is environmental issues) but she makes it interesting. take her and give some effort and you'll do fine.
Alex rocks~! There were 3 Quizes, 8 two pages notes, 1 essay and the final was a 8-page research paper. Our class focused on the issue of Genocide. Garding was fair and I got 95% all the time. Her class inspired me a lot and I "learn" things, as well as critial thinking.
My opinion on taking this class is DONT TAKE IT... She might sound cool letting everyone out of class early but for real i payed to learn something in the class not for her to go get coffee and let the groups work on some really hard books to read. Her essays are too long and does not give you enough time to finish them. She is not helpful at all
Take this class only if you are good working independently, or working in groups. Don't expect help on essays. Feels more like a history class than an english class.
She is a cool person, but her essays, espcially the final research paper is a tad long and there wasnt a lot of time to do that research paper (although i have to cut her some slack cuz some unexpected things happened...)
Alex is an honest teacher. As long as your grammar and mechanics are good then her essays are easy to do. The final paper is 10 pages. Hopefully she'll cut it down to 8 now. Lots of group work, but it was actually pretty fun. And you stick with the same people the whole quarter. She explains things clearly and attentive to her students. Recommended
My favorite teacher- enuff said? She is one of the most personable and intellectual-stimulating teacher at DA. I took her for EWRT 1A and 2A- both classes were easy for me, I got a B+. She incorporates real life issues (Darfur, Sudan, Rwanda, etc) into her lectures/assignments. She'll have cool "themes" for the class. Fun class. Take her!
This class is really easy if you have good foundation of writing. Don't take her if you don't because she won't help you on essay. She always lets us left early. 3 essays: 4,6, and 10 pages. The last 10 pg research paper is a torture; we have to finish it in 1 week.
Teaches you a lot, relevant issues, fun, and fairly easy if you do the work.
alex is a really cool teacher. she helps out the students and is just reeeally chill in class. only bad thing about mass com is the book which is bannnk.
Great teacher. I don't know why that other person was so angry about her son coming to class once. On that day she gave a good lecture like always, and her son being there didn't affect how much I learned. When she canceled class it was for a good reason each time, and it didn't hurt the class. She'll always help you out if you ask her to.
I signed on the write about Alex's teaching, but I saw what some #$#&@ wrote about this class being "ESL." I'm completely OFFENDED! Being one of the Asian students in this honors class, I don't even know where to begin. I'll just say Alex is not AT ALL a **** like some of her students! In fact, her class tried to open our minds. Go figure.
wow. some people need to calm down. Alex is a great teacher; she's not the best but she is certainly not the worst. I learned a lot from her, and no the class was not ESL. come on now! I just wish we had more time in class, especially since she would always have to leave for valid reasons.
She is simply the best English teacher I have ever had. She is smart, funny, and open to people's views. She lets us choose our own prompts and write however we like. The only catch is we have to write well. She is a stickler on grammar. You must attend but she has let us out in 30 minutes at least twice this quarter. Take her class if you can.
Alex is the best English teacher I have ever had! She taught me a lot, I wish I could have taken her prior to 1C. I would have been a much better writer if I had. She is sweet, smart and awesome. I wish there was someone like her teaching back in high school cause she is the only helpful teacher I've had. TAKE HER! you wont regret.
Come on. Really? She's SO easy and she has a great personality. Keeps class relatively interesting. Just go and sleep through it if you're that worried about being bored. It's an English class. You never do anything except write essays and read. Only one easy presentation. She gives full credit to a lot of people. Take her! She's a very easy grader
poetry class was pretty awesome. I've never had a better class, and Alex rules :) awesome teacher, very down to earth and interesting. I've got a whole new outlook at writing now. EWRT-041.-01
She's amazing, knows exactly what to say, always smiling, cares, genuine, patient. Either she grades really easy/most of the class was extremely good @ writing. She'll always be there for you.Don't just like her because she's easy, but because she is so much more. Can't imagine why anyone would ever say anything bad about her. Alex's a rare gem.
Yo ms. Alex is dem good teacher. she helps you alot and she respects other people opinions. Her essays are not that bad. expet the finals is ten pages which you have to write a lot. but still it's not like a roket sience it's doable.
Extremely easy, I didn't even bother to read the last book. You do have to write an 8-page-paper by the end of the quarter. But she's an easy grader. Just be organized and careful with your grammar (go find a tutor if you have problems!) and you'd be fine. Pretty nice and helpful. But very strict on plagiarism.
8 PAGE of ESSAY? I don't think so.. She is nice, she is straight foward, I would say shes very nice :) Things you need is a Child literature book.. depends what she wants. No Scan tron need. You will need a Green book that sells in the bookstore for .99, bring a kids book to every class!!
Very nice teacher!
good teacher. interesting but does not pound you with a ton of work.
For her class, yes, Alex is easy. Let me define easy. If you can write a coherent essay without grammatical and punctuation errors, then this class is easy. I must say that I am disappointed because she was busy that she did not do any writing workshops. Overall, she is a superb teacher!
3 essays per quarter. if you get a no-pess, you can make it up for a pass. her class is quite easy if u do ur work. the grammar hw can take some time and can be extremely boring. T_T
Great teacher. Easy grading on essays. I can still remember the faces on those people on the wait-list who didn't get in, I felt so bad for them.
It's a basis-level class. It teaches some basic stuffs that non-native speaker hadn't noticed before the class. Even though the grassroots classwork is boring, it does help. BTW, We just have 3 essays to do. No test/exam. It's easy to pass. Therefore, I recommend her.
Her class is simple. If you put the effort you will get an A. 8 paragraphs, one midterm, one reflection paper (not hard to do), and one research paper. Her grading is fair. Her book was a bit boring but she changes book every quarter. She won't be teaching this winter so you will have to wait for the spring quarter.
Alex is an amazing English teacher! She is very nice and funny and really tries to help you with your writing. Loved her class!
Alex is amazing and very down to earth. This class isn't overly structured, because how do you structure creative writing? Over the quarter you submit about 1 page per week of whatever you want. No tests, exams, or essays. Just come and write your heart out. This class is an easy A, and if you submit work, you get full credit. Simple as that.
One of the nicest people I've ever met. I've taken 2 creative writing classes with Alex, and after each one, I noticed a distinct improvement to both my poetry and fiction writing skills.
I took her hybrid class and we met 3 days a week in class and then with our groups outside of class on thursdays. I enjoyed this class a lot and my writing has definitely improved. Definitely not an easy A, but as long as you do your work you will be fine. Alex is a great teacher and you can tell she is very enthusiastic about what she teaches.
Alex is great! I took her class online and she always responded fast and emailed us to clarify or congratulate us on how well we were doing. There was a few quizzes and an online assignment every week (easy). Our final was a 3-5 page research paper. She is very strict on MLA format. Besides that she was great! I would definitely recommend her.
Alex is great! I took her class online and she would always responded fast and email us to clarify or congratulate us on how well we were doing. I took both English 1A & 1B with Alex and hands down, she is the best English professor at De Anza! I could've got a better grade in 1A but did get a better grade in 1B. Do your work and you'll be fine. She is a very sweet professor, you won't regret it! Thanks again, Alex!
I took her class this summer.Everything was done online.Moderate readings, timed quizzes every week which were 5 questions, but it took me almost the whole 2hrs.Her class made me a better critical thinker.Lots of lil assignments due throughout the week but its doable if you really try. 5-6pg final paper and 1 extra credit assignment at the end.
I took her 1A class in the Winter quarter and overall I enjoyed the class. She's super helpful, actually cares about her students, and always keeps you updated via email. Just go to class and keep up with the work and the class shouldn't be difficult at all.
3 formal writing assignment, 3 quizzes, 1 forum post and 2 response weekly, 1 final essay (4-6pg/1000-1500words). Alex is usually very quick to respond to emails and clear about what she wants. She can be anal on MLA format and a tough on grading though. moderate reading every week, 25-35 pgs. It's do-able but YOU WON'T PASS IF YOU DON'T READ.
She's super sweet and very open-minded. Class has discussions and group activities. There is also online work, but it is really easy to do. She will help you with your writing, but you must make the effort to force yourself to improve and meet with her to correct your mistakes. She really cares about her students and what she teaches.
Recommended. Helped me improve my writing techniques with the way she assigns hw and how she wants it done. only one research paper. Focused on the topic of environmental awareness.
Ms. Giardino is not a lazy teacher, she puts in a lot of work to make sure each student gets the feedback they need to get their assignments done and learn what she teaches. Her class delved into issues of the real world. The class was engaging and one really learns from the assignments. Her class is one I will never forget.
Good teacher. Recommend
Her classes are fantastic.
Amazing professor! Online assignments are easy, but you must put a lot of effort in writing assignments.
She is one of the best professors at De Anza!
Best English Teacher Ever! I highly recommend her because she explains every thing you need to know, how to do and understand the homework she assigns to helping you improve on your writing skills. Need a passing grade? Just do the homework and attend class (mandatory), plus her lessons are fun and interesting!
I took her class online in the summer quarter. She is an easy grader. There is only one final essay. She has class discussions and discussion questions every week.
Second time taking Ewrt 1A and this teacher is the best! She's a bit messy but I don't mind her because she always extends time for you to do better.
The reading portion of the the class was pretty easy and the final was pretty much a guaranteed A. The essays were graded fairly tough, however, but she gave great feedback so that you could easily improve on the next one.
I love Alex! It was my second time taking an English 1A and I passed with an A!! Just do your work and don't be lazy! I'm a full time student and I have a job! This class is do-able!
A brilliant woman, who is passionate about the topic she chooses to teach. The theme may be different depending on the quarter you took this class, but you learn the basic English mechanics and structure, and what it looks and feels to write English and write it well. I consider myself a fairly achieved writer, but Alex kept me humble and mindful.
My class met 3 times a week and was part online. We never had homework due in person, but we had weekly homework online. It wasn't hard, but could be time consuming. I loved Giardino because she was super helpful, understanding, and graded nice. You would have to do the online homework to pass. Assignments are very clear. 2 essays. Must buy a fish
Alex is one of the best teachers at De Anza College. I used to be an ESL student and I was very afraid to go in a regular English class. Alex gave me confidence about my writing, helped me with useful feedback and encouraged me to do my best. She is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help with a big smile. Thanks Alex! You rock!
Alex was a very helpful professor. She makes sure that everyone gets the help that they need. She's a pretty tough grader but gives amazing feedback. To be honest, the assigned topics were boring but it was easy. DO ALL hw, it will make a difference in your grade from an A to an A- . EVERY POINT COUNTS.
Prior to taking Alex's class ,I have failed EWRT 211 before . However this time time around I was able to do much better in this course for plenty of reasons. Alex really cares about her students and gives clear instructions on her essays, not only did she gave valuable feedback but also taught grammar which helped improve many students writing.
Worst teacher. This class is hard, but she makes everything unclear. She is not helpful at all. Take her class and you will regret it. Waste time.
Alex is the best. Clear and helpful and you know everything you have to do and read. NO pop quizzes ever! Super sweet and nice and helpful to everyone. Respects you and your opinions. Gives very helpful grading feedback. If you are trying to learn, take her.
I'm taking a summer class. I was dreading it but Alex is making the class ok. She replies to all my emails and has given good feedback so far. The homework is a lot of reading. I used to think I couldn't write English essays, but Alex is already making me feel like I can. She rocks. But she is definitely challenging!
Alex is one of the best English professors at De Anza. Her class is fairly easy and she grades generously as long as you follow her instructions. She is so passionate with her lectures and I could tell she cared for the class. She extended assignment dates if we weren't ready and was available outside of the classroom as much as possible. Take her!
Tough grader--very picky, requires numerous revisions of papers to get a decent grade, and still acts disappointed and dissatisfied with your work. When it comes to interpretation and argument, it's her way or the highway. Say what she wants, do everything exactly as she orders, and your low grade will not reflect for your time and effort.
BEST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER! She really does care about her students, and makes sure everyone gets the help that they need. You need the book for sure. Lots of reading but just use audible, it's easier. Weekly assignments are easy. 3 essays and they are straight forward. Don't miss class, you'll lose a lot of info. Would take again!
Very picky professor. I have put much effort on my essays, presentations but you can never get what you expect to get. She seems nice, but if you can't write in her way you will never get a good score. Alex, if you don't have ability to teach 100 students in a quarter, then dont do it. Be responsible to every student please! Be ready to get B.
I never learned how to write an essay in high school so it was kind of difficult for me in the beginning of the class. But Alex gave a lot feedback to me that was really helpful to me, and I tried to improve my writing in every essay. She is fast to reply to emails and gave me a lot of time in office hours. She cares about all her students.
A LOT OF READING! text book used for ONLINE class is "This changes everything" by Naomi Klein for EWRT1A. EVERYTHING FROM FIRST ASSIGNMENT TO THE FINAL ESSAY IS WRITE ABOUT THIS BOOK. READ THE BOOK BEFORE YOU CHOOSE HER CLASS. IF YOU CANNOT EVEN FINISH THE FIRST PAGE, THINK AGAIN BEFORE YOU SIGN UP HER CLASS. TOO MUCH READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do NOT choose online class!! You will regret!Online class will NOT save you time! She assign A LOT of reading and writing to MAKE you make up for the lecture time(you end up spending twice the time)! She choose primary textbook base on her own preferences. She make us write about the book on climate change&politics!inconsiderate and torturing
Alex is a great English teacher with an amazing personality. Her classes fill up fast so if you can, just take her class! :)
Alex is a very tough grader, in order to get a good grade you must follow the guidelines strictly. Another issue I had with the class was political views that were expressed randomly throughout the quarter by Alex which seemed to have no relation to the material being taught.
Alex is so kind and patient and supportive. You get good feedbacks, and I felt appreciated although English is not my first language. Also class was an eye-opener about climate change. Hard book that you have to read.
For someone who has struggled in English classes all my life this was one of the least stressful. Great teacher when you have a question or need to say something she makes you feel like you know what you're talking about and ties it into the lecture. As long as you try your best she will give you around 100% on assignments.
Thank God for Professor Giardino -- I took her English course at DeAnza and she completely changed my life -- she taught me how to write clearly and effectively and she was always available for help. Professor Giardino's passion for helping students and knowledge as an educator makes her highly qualified and recommended.
Took her this summer. 3 weekly forums (20 each), 2 reading quizzes (100 each), 1 final essay (100), that's it. For the first two items, as long as you carefully prepare the questions on the study guide she provided and follow her instructions, your grade can already be high enough to get an A. Don't need to read Klein's book very intensively.
I never thought I would like this class as much as I did. I thoroughly enjoyed every assignment, video, and prompt that was thrown at the students in this class. This quarter goes by super fast because summer quarter is only 6 weeks. Even in such a short amount of time, I have learned more than I thought I would learn from a creative writing class.
She is really nice. Lenient grader. Less work than other professor. Accessible outside the class. Definitely recommend.
Professor Alex Giardino was nice and always thorough when it comes to grading. She's very understanding and was willing to allow to re turn in assignments that I made little mistakes in.
I took Professor Giardino's EWRT1A hybrid course and I was glad I did. It was monday, wednesday and volunteer work on Friday. The book was no more than $20, dense read but doable. From the very beginning she provides a clear schedule of the quarter. Do your online work, pay attention in class and you will pass.
She is GREAT. Any one claiming Alex is impossible to please is simply lazy. She has a clear grading criteria, always available for help or questions. DO not take this class and expect to just be given an A. You must earn your grade for god sake. Don't expect her to be nice and a push over. If you do what you need to, you earn an A.
Alex is a very nice professor, follow her instruction, and you'll get A.
I took this class online and there were four assignments due on certain days. Overall easy because she gave feedback on what to revise and improve on in our assignments for the portfolio. We also had to read materials of our choosing for the reading journal. I would definitely retake this online class with her again. Straight forward assignments.
She did not give too many workloads. There were only weekly discussion posts, 1 midterm, 2 final essays. The first final essay is not hard but the second one is; however, it is still doable. Her class was not too hard and easy. In other words, it was moderate.
Had a very different way of teaching that I really enjoyed. There was less of an emphasis on homework and more of an emphasis on class time.
One of the easiest classes I have ever taken, no cap.. You get full credit on almost every assignment, and she is a very generous grader on essays. If you struggle to get an A in this class and you arent a fob, I'd recommend you read a book or two, cuz u needa get yo english together.. Highly recommend, and she is a super easy A, just do the work.
I took Alexs EWRT 2 class. The hw is on Canvas and it has to be done every week. She gives good feedback on what you need to work on, in opinion, her feedbacks helped a lot. Whatever the classes weakness was on, shell spend the whole class on that specific topic. Have to get 2 books & hw & essays rely on the books. Hw preps u for the final paper
I took her online class. She is so picky and a tough grader. Seriously not easy A. I don't recommend her online class.
For this EWRT1A class, writing was prioritized over reading - we wrote 5 essays this quarter. Giardino is experimental and seeks to make her curriculum engaging, so you may or may not enjoy her slightly unconventional prompts. She's a pretty lenient grader, moderate at most. Just invest a decent amount of effort and reflect on her feedback.
Alex is an easy A if you just try. 5 essays(easy topics), some hw but easy to do in under an hour. You show up write as much of the essay as you can then leave. If you finish early you can leave class early. She teaches lessons but when getting towards the end of the quarter she teaches lessons about what the class struggles with their essays,EasyA
Wow. Lectures really go over the vitals of essay writing such as structure and grammar. She isn't a "free" A, but you will likely get an A if you spend time to revise your essays and learn from her lectures/feedback. I entered this class scared of the essays, but her care really helped me through. Top choice teacher!
took EWRT 1, free A as long as you put some amount of effort into your papers and do all the assignments. would recommend her, grades consist of weekly discussions and respond to 4 other peers. the papers were based off a poem, documentary, outside sources, and a video project based on 3 books you read for the quarter.
This course requires weekly discussion posts and for you to reply to 2 students per post. You won't be required to buy a textbook but you will buy a novel. Alex made sure that we knew her class was the last thing to stress over and even proceeded to make it easier on us b/c she was well aware of how COVID-19 was affecting everyone's lives. V sweet!
She only gives whole letter grades and it rounds up. Great for getting an A. Her classroom atmosphere is really laid back. Attendance is taken by in-class assignments. You will be writing a variety of essays through out. Most classwork is done in-class. She gives good writing tips. Final was a personal meeting and you'll get an A if you work for it
I took her class 3 years ago! YES, I STILL HATE IT SO MUCH! It's the most difficult class I have taken in all my 2 years at De Anza, It is 10 times more difficult than my EWRT2 class! She makes you write book review on book named This--- changes---everything. AVOID HER! have to spend 4 hours EVERYDAY writing essays. take her is the biggest mistake!
I got an A+ and I always had such hard times in English classes. This class motivated me and I never felt bad or stressed out. Alex is there for us. She cares. Online classes are weekly talks and a TED talk and a video essay. Not a ton of work and not all the same boring essay writing like other English classes.
Alex is a amazing teacher. Her grading is super lax and she a great person to be around and learn from.
Great summer class. You choose your own book to read. You do weekly discussions, one essay, and one video project. She focuses on helping with your writing skills. You will get better writing for sure. Do the work and youre guaranteed an A. Shes nice and understanding.
Hands down one of the best professors here. I recommend everyone to take her because she truly is a nice and wonderful person. She actually cares about her students and their grades. She is also very willing to help whenever someone has trouble. Great class.
Pretty good class, heavy on the writing and reading but that's expected for an english class. Only weird thing is she's REALLY weird about typos and grammar. And not just in a grades harshly way but in a way in that in a free response test every question ended with NO TYPOS.
Took creative writing with professor Giardino. Super sweet and caring professor. Assignments for this class were fun projects which were for our creative writing as well as taking inspiration from books we chose to read for the class. Super easy class too, do your work and you'll pass! I highly recommend this class and professor Giardino!
she's kind and sweet, and this class was def an easy A.
I loved Alex's class so much that I'm taking another required English GE course with her again. There is a very reasonable amount of work with specific and valuable feedback provided so you can improve your writing. She is extremely flexible, accommodating, and responsive. And the books are engaging to even the most reluctant reader.
Prof. Giardino is great! Her workload is very manageable and she's responsive to emails. She extended an analytical essay assignment for the whole class because one student didn't really get what to do. She made us read 2 books for the quarter. There's some challenge to her material, but she's not overly hard and gives great feedback.
If you do all the work, you'll do just fine. Although there was a lot of reading to fit into the 6-week summer session, I'm sure the pacing is more reasonable in a regular quarter. Tips: (1) annotate the margins of the digital books using an annotation tool like Kami and (2) do the study guide and you'll be prepared for the reading quizzes.
The workload its self is 5 text discussions 1 flipgrid related to a fiction book 1 flipgrid related to a non-fiction book 1 Annotated Bibliography for TED Talk 1 essay on either the fiction book or the non-fiction book Easy to read Canvas. You learn from mostly YouTube videos and internet articles. Will listen to emails.
I took Mrs. Giardino Fall 2021 and she is a great professor! A total of 2 essays, 1 annotated bibliography, almost weekly discussions, and 2 flipgrids regarding non-fiction & fiction books. Super clear and offers students examples of what she expects of students. Also caring and accommodating to all her students. Highly recommend!!
Taken winter quarter 2021-2022. Class consists of weekly forums a midterm and one final essay. She prepares you very well for the midterm and gives ample time for the final essay (even though its quite long). Great teacher, really cares for the students and wants you to succeed.
I took Mrs. Giardino again for EWRT 2A. This class was a bit disorganized @ times, but this professor is an absolute gem. I have never seen someone so accommodating, understanding, and ready to listen to student feedback. This prof. truly cares. Only 1 essay (argumentive essay) and 1 midterm exam in which you get questions before the actual test!
Alex is one of the few teachers that I felt truly care about her students. Assignments were fairly easy and she went over them well during lectures; there were 10 weekly discussions, 2 reading tests (questions are posted ahead of time) and 4 assignments that correspond with the final essay. Zooms are recorded, so attendance to them isn't mandatory.
very nice! weekly forums (+2 replies) & 2 reading tests. she makes u read 2 books, 1 assigned + 1 of choice (gives u a list of books). test q's are given 48hrs before due. 1 final essay (2000 words) but she makes u do the essay part by part so it makes it much easier esp for the procrastinators! overall easy class, lectures are veryyyy helpful !!!
She is probably the best professor I've ever had in my life. Caring and understanding. A true gem.
Not too much work for this class considering I took it asynchronously. There are a few discussion posts, a few essays, and you have to read a nonfiction and a fiction book and make a video about them. Alex always left good comments on my work about how I could improve.
I was bad at writing essays in HS and this amazing woman made writing essays EASY!! I'm a transfer Junior now and I can write 5-7 page papers in a few hours thanks to her tips. If you're taking 1A she has you pick a book of your choice and makes you film a vid as if you were in a conversation. Great instructor if you want to learn to write.
You have to read the books weekly and hold yourself accountable. Weekly forums and 2 reading tests and then a final essay. If you read the books, the reading test and final are really easy. She is a really good teacher and if you need help she's always happy to answer. 93.5 and above is an A but it's achievable if you work hard and do everything
You read two books the whole term but make a selection from the books she provides. Highly recommended to read all announcements. The workload is not overbearing.
Everything is posted ahead of time. 2 books to read. Weekly participation forums. If you have questions, email her and she will really help you. She will not make you feel stupid for asking. She is a humble and caring teacher. I would definitely recommend her!
I took asynchronous with her Fall 2022. She gives a few short lectures but the material is mostly online. As long as you put in the effort you will do well.
Tough grader
Very kind person. I took her EWRT2 class, and the class was a breeze. Made us write a final on a book that we had to choose from her list. Had to make a weekly post and respond to others. Pretty easy work.
Great course that actually refined my critical thinking. A perfect blend of "this is the answer I'm looking for" and "what is your opinion". Took this course with three other classes and did not feel overwhelmed at all. Gave great feedback which helped me succeed on the final. Would recommend!
Her classes changed that for me. She is understanding and offered MANY extensions to my class when we needed them. She provides examples of what she wants and helps improve your work through detailed feedback. She responds quickly to emails. As someone who doesn't enjoy English I can not recommend her enough.
This is a pretty easy class. You just read stuff on the modules, do canvas discussions, then maybe write a paper. There are not really clear grading criteria but a standard essay seemed to work. I didn't read half the stuff in the modules and did all the essays the night they were due. Mostly analyzing literature though for the papers.
One weekly group assignment, one textbook required (free pdf version), one regular book you have to buy, two reading tests (get questions beforehand), and one lengthy 1800-2000 word (2500-3000 for honors) final essay (only essay). Not a bad class, lectures feel pointless, and the writing is a bit much for the final essay (had to drag it out).
Very kind professor that clearly cares about students. Provides textbook, checks in witch class how things are going, incorporates feedback and generally has a very chill vibe. Only downside is that she doesn't accept late work at all without a good reason + proof. The assignments are small and spaced out enough that this doesn't really matter.
Great class and professor! You'll learn a lot about methods of critical thinking and how to identify fallacies, data flaws, and other important things. Alex is very understanding and supportive, has reasonable class rules, and provides great support and feedback for writing. This class takes effort and you should stay on track with reading!
Very understanding and respectable professor! She goes in depth with everything and frequently asks for student input. While assignments can be difficult she definitely prepares her students for all of the assignments, so as long as you are doing your work you shouldn't fall too far behind. Great feedback is one of her best strengths!
Very nice and lenient professor. She explains very well in class what she is looking for. Her readings tests set you up for success. For the first half the quarter it's all group work and notetaker for groupwork gets extra credit points. Only one essay, but it's 1800+ words long and you have a span for 4 weeks which she goes step by step on.
If you need a GE or just want to learn, I def recommend! Her class is easy but I still learned ways to improve my reading/writing. Weekly group work, 2 reading tests (questions posted in advance), free textbook. She cares a lot about students and is understanding about things like missing classes. Final essay is a bit long but simple.
Enjoyed this class. You have textbook & another book to read, which you choose from a list. A lot of group work & some extra credit. The final essay was 8 pages, argumentative, and related to a book you read through the quarter. Two quizzes on the textbook and you know the questions 2 days before the quiz. Easy to get an A if you do the HW.
Alex is a good professor and a really easy A. You can get lots of extra credit and there is only one final essay and the 2 reading quizzes ( which are essentially in place of essays). They're based on a textbook she makes you read and one book of your choice from her list. She can be passive aggressive about cheating and chatgpt so beware.
Took this as an online course over the summer. Ungraded assignments like study questions and reading through your book and textbook. Only 3 graded assignments which were 2 free response quizzes based on your book and textbook and 1 2000 word essay. She is a very lenient grader(coming from a bad writer), just make sure you follow the prompt.
She's literally the coolest person ever. I enjoyed the time I had in her Creative Writing class. We had weekly discussions and I loved engaging in creative talks with everyone!
sometimes unclear on grading criteria but overall wasn't that hard. very manageable class on top of doing other classes (this was an asynch class). gives feedback and tells you why your grade was what it was but honestly as long as you do whatever is asked then you'll probably get an a.
Alex is so great. She's like a magical forest fairy that's come to heal hearts and inspire creative minds. I had a wonderful time learning from such an experienced industry professional like Alex. The feedback and knowledge she provides is instrumental for those wishing to enter the writing industry someday. Easy grader but prepare to do the work.
Alex cares about her students and makes writing fun.
She was very understanding. Weekly discussion posts, a few essays. Overall the work was very doable, and not overwhelming. She gives good constructive feedback on your essays, and was willing to give me an extension on our final essay without question. Read a single book about racism the entire course, was a good read that gets you thinking.
Alex is amazing. Her grading schemes are clear, and if you follow them, guaranteed an A. Grades are mainly based on weekly forum discussions. Extra credit work is available from the reading quiz. There's only one book to read and she doesn't babysit you on this, so be prepared to be discipline on reading progress.
Amazing professor. Encourages us to use AI. 3 essays and discussion posts biweekly. Take her.
Alex is AMAZING! There's one book about racism for the course. 5 discussion forums, 3 essays, and 1 reading quiz. The reading quiz is about AI tools and you have 1 week to prepare. Extra credit is available. She's super chill and encourages using AI with caution.
Alex is an amazing professor. Super clear instructions on everything. Just pay attention, and she'll be very helpful with your English writing. She is also a cool person and cares for her students.
I don't understand why all the other reviews are so positive. Her feedback is almost nonexistent and very vague. She doesn't help you understand what you got wrong and expects you to already be at a PhD-writing level. Worst of all, she is the slowest grader in the entirety of De Anza. I thought this class would've been an easy A.
I'm perfectly fine with strict teachers, but this professor doesn't provide enough guidance or support to improve at all. It feels like there's no clear direction, and the expectations are sooo unrealistic without any real constructive feedback. I wouldn't personally take her again, but be AWARE of what you're getting yourself into.
Super supportive and understanding. Cares about her students. People complain when they think everything should be easy. Alex is "easy" if you do the work and follow her clear directions. You'll learn a lot. Take her.
Love this teacher. I had a hard time this quarter with life and she was flexible and so so nice. I never had a teacher chsnge a whole class to help me bc I was in the hospital. Who does that? I got a good grade because she helped me get thru everything.
The workload isn't heavy if you dont procrasinate. She gives plenty of time to work on essays and discussions. Pretty easy grader in my opinion but reading about a.i 24/7 could be tedious. She doesn't accept late work but graded mine even tho i sumbitted a minute late. Overall super chill and understanding.
Don't take her EWRT 1A if you want an easy A. Tedious guidelines for essays and reading quiz.
I learned a lot in this class. I'm in early childhood education, and this was a great class for me and my life. Be prepared to do a lot of work on your own. Some feedback on essays, not a lot. Mostly this class is about learning about the literature. It is not about improving your writing.
I took a Hybrid class. Professor Giardino is nice, funny and lighthearted. The entire course outline is posted ahead of time. There's a lot of reading / listening material, a book, a few discussion posts, three essays, and a short quiz. The class is fairly straightforward and paced well. I recommend her if you are looking to take an English class.
I took her in person class and I can tell you that this class if one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. We had 3 essays and 5 group discussions where you have to answer and reply to 4 other students. Only problem was that she was absent for a bunch of days and talks about AI for the entire quarter(yes she lets you use AI on the essays)
Overall a good professor. Our quarter included 2 essays and weekly discussion posts. She gives amazing feedback and truly cares about improving your writing. The work isn't too difficult and if you make any mistakes, just be sure she'll let you know on how to improve it. I recommend her for anyone taking EWRT 1A.
Take her if you can! She gives good feedback and is understanding of your situation. We had two essays, a 10-minute video assignment for finals, and weekly forums, along with replying to 2 students for full credit. She is quick to reply to emails and has a clear grading rubric. She also encourages the smart use of AI.
Really kind professor and loves AI. She allows students to use AI on exams, but in a non-cheating manner. There are 3 essays, a lot of discussion posts, and one quiz but you get the questions in advance.
I find her a bit ridiculous, the reason people take online classes is so that they have extra time to focus on other classes. She expects you to spend a minimum of 5 hours on canvas (she keeps track). If im completing my assignments on time and following the rubric why does it matter how much im on canvas?? probably just gonna keep the tab open 😒
She's a very caring teacher, but can be strict, so just do the work. if you want to learn how to write, you will in this class, also you learn how to better use AI tools. She's lenient and understanding. Take her!
We watched two movies and read a short book she gives as a pdf online. We wrote two essays, some study guides, and online conversation assignments. Very manageable workload. Quick feedback on everything. I have never felt good about my writing, but this class felt supportive. The study guides were boring. Great class overall. Highly recommend her.
Nicest teacher ever. Very supportive of creativity. I guess I can't say enough good things. This class was actually life-changing for me. I'm a writer now bc of her.
Loved her class. I admit it was easy, because we only watched movies and read a really simple textbook. But I learned a lot, especially about how to use AI and tutoring, and she's very chill about everything. Take her if you can.
a little intense about attendance but other than that so easy, you can use AI, bc you learn how to use it smart for college. she's chill and nice, but sometimes strict. take her. I never got an A+ in my life before this class
love this professor, take her if you can, it's a pretty easy A, but you do get to be a better writer
She helped me get into a four-year, my dream college, and she was supporting me the whole way. I am thankful for the teachers at De Anza like Prof Giardino who care and are there for you. If you want to feel like your teacher actaully cares about you, she's great.
Great teacher, no complaints. She is a bit more strict the beginning of the course but she's a great teacher overall!
Pretty easy and chill class. Weekly discussion questions based on two movies, weekly questions based on a textbook, and two essays ~1000 words. A little bit strict about being on canvas at the beginning of class.
You have to be on Canvas for at least 5 hours a week for an asynchronous class. Terrible grader. Unreliable too. Just take julie pesano.
easiest summer school class ever, highly recommended if you have a lot of other hard classes
Alex is chill. She responds very fast to my emails. We watched two movies and read a few articles. Permissive about chatgpt. You should take her if you want a decent experience.
Fun class. My writing improved. Not difficult. Very reasonable grader. We had weekly discussions two essays and a video assignment.
Professor Alex helped me with getting a tutoring assignment on campus and helped me with college essays. She's a really friendly professor. Maybe she is not strict, but she has high expectations for us. I think that means she is caring.
Easy A, the assignments, double essays and the video essay for the finals were very easy, just had to take part in discussions and replies throughout the quarter. Essays were based on movies and just like how others said, was a bit strict on early weeks, and teaches how to ethically use AI.
