Great professor, really helpful. The content of the course could be dull, but he really makes it come alive -- highly recommend taking this class, if you're interested in EOS or just want your NS credit. Class isn't hard either
Alex is an amazing professor. His lectures are interesting and you'll learn a lot, but his class isn't too hard. He has a killer personality and an even better sense of humor.
Glass is a vibrant, hilarious teacher. The info isn't that exciting but he makes class really fun with awesome powerpoints and his great personality. Puts PP online, but go to class because the tests are entirely off of the lectures. Don't read the book--no help.
Even though this class is supposed to be easy, Glass really keeps you interested. I actually looked forward to his lectures by the end of the semester, and I learned way more about earth sciences than I thought I would in that class. It has probably been my favorite class at Duke so far.
Very easy, but a professor who is truly passionate about his subject. Clearly, he is trying to spark interest in EOS. Lectures sometimes got a little boring, but he was wonderful. Tests and homework extremely easy.
Class was very easy. He tells you exactly what you needs to know for the tests, and the homeworks are a joke. Easy A.
Incredible lecturer. Ties topics in with fun and interesting examples and is genuinely interested in teaching his students about geology. EOS 11 is more interesting and EASIER than Chem 83 if you take it with Glass.
Dr. Glass is an amazing professor. He posts all the powerpoints online, so a lot of people don't go to class...but they are very interesting powerpoints, and all the info you need for the test is on them. This class isn't THAT easy. Chances are you will still need to study for tests and there is a LOT of info, but it's basically just memorization
He is an extraordinary teacher. He is very funny and clever. His tests are based totally off of his discussions during lecture not the PowerPoints he posts. The class is much harder than it has been in the past. If you study a lot and pay attention during class you will do well. TAKE THIS CLASS because it is fascinating! Not an Easy A. WORK HARD :)
if you go to class and pay attention, you will get an A.... he is an awesome teacher and it's not hard to stay alert in class because he keeps your attention
Great, interesting, passionate professor. His lectures are really interesting and hilarious. You don't really have to go to class; tests are all based off of his great powerpoints. Class isn't an easy A, but if you study for tests, you'll be fine. Recommended!
NOT AN EASY A at ALL! DON'T TAKE IF YOU WANT AN EASY A! HE is a WONDERFUL Teacher/Educator, but he has made the class a lot harder! You have to attend all of the lectures and PAY CLOSE ATTENTION! SOMEWHERE IN THE A range is possible if you dedicate A LOT, Yes I Mean A LOT OF TIME INTO THE CLASS! LOVE THE CLASS AND GLASS THOUGH!
His eyes are amazing.
He was terrible. Made the class harder to the point were you could actually study and go to class and still end up without an A. This class is only a joke bc you don't have to go to class and there is essentially no work other than studying. But he puts questions on tests that he never mentioned before.
Tests have become unnecessarily hard (c'mon, it's EOS ELEVEN, not a 100 level course on up). That said, I'd still take Glass any day.
don't take this class unless you are interested in eos. Not a good teacher, not a good class, not an easy A
Im taking Dynamic Oceans with Glass and he is AMAZING! The lectures are always very interesting and the slideshows are very entertaining! He always adds fun animations. Overall it is an easy class if you show up to the lectures. 2 Midterms and 1 final. TAKE THIS CLASS
Glass is an amazing teacher. He's always willing to help out when you need it. Hate to break it to you, but there is no easy class at Duke. However, if you're looking for an awesome teacher and an overall cool dude who knows his stuff, Alexander Glass is your man.
Taking this class is like putting glass up your ...ss and i mean a bottle so it bleeds and hurts. This is WAY harder than it needs to be. Dont take this if you're looking for an easy A. Homework takes forever... tests are very hard . But the professor is a nice guy, very cool...so to speak, but once again. not easy.
Class is not just an "easy A," if you're a Bio major looking to boost your GPA like me. You have to work--memorize his lectures, basically. On the plus side, his gorgeous eyes, hot accent, and great sense of humor made class fun!
He's a pretty nice guy, but he definitely is starting to make the class a lot harder than before. Tests are not easy. You need to go to class and take good notes and memorize them. He gives time consuming assignments at the end of the semester. Don't take for easy A.
Not a good teacher. Way overrated, does not answer e-mails. I did not find him very funny, and definitely not an easy A. This was my hardest class this semester by far.
don't take the class. nice guy , but just not for everyone
engaging professor- definitely knows how to make relatively mundane things interesting. on the other hand, i took it for an easy A and it was not. GO to class, and pay attention, and be ready for petty work at teh end of the semester
It's a good class, just not if you're expecting the "easy A." Go into it expecting it to be like any other class, and it'll be worthwhile. Glass is pretty funny too. For as little work as I did and to come out with an OK grade...I'm okay with that.
Glass is a G. You don't have to go to class, though you should as class is amusing and he's extremely interesting. Tests are pretty easy if you go to *some* of the classes and look over powerpoints. I thought the class would be a bit easier though. Put a bit of effort in and you'll get an A, otherwise you're B-coasting. Glass is a great guy too.
Alexander Glass is an amazing professor. One of the best i've had at Duke. He is very engaging and makes relatively boring material very interesting. He is funny, witty, and makes a huge effort to make the class fun.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS.
Glass is a really cool guy. He makes the class really interesting with his witty anecdotes and interesting powerpoint presentations. As long as you study, the class will be okay. It is interesting, fun and not at all taxing. I always looked forward to his classes.
"On the plus side, his gorgeous eyes, hot accent, and great sense of humor made class fun" HAHAHAHAHA. .. But kind of true. Alex is a great professor - though (as the ratings before have mentioned)not an easy-breezy A. Go to class - take notes: there are discrepancies btw the book and ppt slides.
Excellent teacher. Questions on some tests seemed tangential to what was really important, but still worthwhile. If you figure out how the water machine works, please post here.
Prof. Glass is a really great lecturer. He's interesting & funny -- he uses his own pictures in his slides which is nice. He's very knowledgeable and accessible. Also Annie the TA was really helpful as well. It's a great class - I learned a lot and it was fun. Definitely have to go to the lectures though --test material isn't all found in the ppts.
His lecture slides are pretty damn good. Funny guy. But prob not the easiest class.
In terms of actual workload, the class isn't the most demanding. However, there is a lot of content that must be memorized and there is an opportunity to expand your knowledge with a professor that's enthusiastic about his subject. He also goes out of the way to make himself accessible outside of class. I would definitely recommend this class.
Great lecturer. Lots of stuff to memorize. Don't take unless you're legitimately interested in earth science
Alex Glass is a GREAT lecturer. He's interesting, and really knows his stuff. His tests are a little on the difficult side, and his class is in no sense an 'easy A'. Sometimes, his exams tests on some really trivial, exact numbers. But if you go to class and just read over and memorize your notes fairly well, you'll be able to pull off a B easily.
Rocks for jocks? I think not. More like rocks for rocket scientists...I kid you not.
Great Lecturer, but recently was forced to make the class way harder than it needed to be. He should have indicated this at the start of the term!!!!!! Has changed from rocks for jocks to impossible tests as he asks needlessly difficult questions just to get a class distribution. If you're going to take this, definitely go with Klein, she's a gem.
Lectures are good. Work involved, but the class was curved at the end. Take it.
This class was definitely harder than I expected and not exactly an easy A. You need to attend the lectures to get thorough notes for the exams. However, he is an engaging, interesting, and pretty funny professor who really knows his stuff. Take this class, and you'll learn loads!
Alex is an amazing and very engaging professor. I took this class to fulfill my NS req. and could not have chosen better. While you need to attend lectures to do well, he keeps class interesting and at the end of the semester is a very reasonable grader. Hey, any prof. who reads Dune, watches Firefly and quotes Monty Python is alright with me :)
In case you're curious, "Touching the Void" is on YouTube. It's totally a baller movie. I actually teared up, not even joking. Alex is such a cool guy. If you came to Duke to learn something, take any of Alex's classes. They're not easy, but you definitely come away knowing & understanding things way better than before, and that's a good feelin
Professor Glass is an extremely animated professor who makes class and slightly mundane material very itneresting to get involved with. His tests were hard but he was extremely fair about grading and very easy to approach. He is generally a cool guy outside of class as well, and very helpful. I liked his teaching style enough to take another class
Professor Glass is an awesome professor. His lectures are really interesting, concise, and his power points are amazing. I really enjoyed class and would take any others he teaches.
Alex is a really nice guy and a very entertaining lecturer. He puts a lot of effort into his powerpoints and he's a very clear teacher. You have to study and go to class to get an A, but otherwise it's pretty easy. He makes studying rocks interesting and entertaining!
He is a fun and interesting lecturer and is always willing to help out a student with a question.
"His lecture slides are pretty damn good. Funny guy. But prob not the easiest class." This review said it best, so I'm just going to repeat it.
NOT AN EASY A, NOT "ROCKS FOR JOCKS," you must put in effort and even then a B is a real possibility, take if you are interested in EOS, do not expect an easy A
Glass is a great prof. His power points are awesome and he makes the class interesting. You need to go to class, but the power points are all online and every test question can be answered from the power points. There is no final, so you only need to learn the material for each test, there are 3 easy HWs and Extra Credit, and the class is curved
Take his Major Fossil Transitions class! If you are at all interested in Biology or Paleotology (or if you just want to take another class with him 'cause he's one of the most fun, interesting Profs at Duke), take it and have a blast listening to his engaging lectures. The material isn't hard to understand, but the work is extensive for this class.
Professor Glass is very fun and entertaining in class, using excellent and very impressive slides and a energetic lecture style to make an otherwise boring topic easy to learn about. He is very fair with grading, has extra credit opportunities, and always curves to a high average if necesary. Good guy to take from.
I have taken both EOS 11 and 12 from Professor Glass. Both classes were very entertaining and easy to attend. He uses very impressive and entertaining slides and has an energetic lecture style. Some people say that the classes are difficult, but if you try at all and come to class its quite easy. Glass is the man, would take more from him if could
Great guy. Loved his class and his teaching. Very engaging lectures!
Great Prof-I would def recommend Major Fossil Transitions. Not much work on a lecture to lecture basis, but when the midterm/final come around you're gonna have a late couple of nights. Attending lecture and taking notes is a must, but to be honest he's an animated guy so it's not that bad. If you put in a decent amount of time you will do well.
Amazing professor, take a Glass-class during your time at Duke!! Fossil Transitions is an interesting class, especially since Glass is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. You do need to come to class & pay attention but I actually enjoyed going to this class. (weird, right?) Glass is a fair professor and accessible/ willing to help if needed!
He's such a good prof that I changed my major to take more EOS classes! Professor Glass imbues his teaching with so much passion that it's difficult to get bored with the potentially mundane material (discussing fossils). EOS141 is a great class--just go to lecture! It's fun, anyway. Glass is the best prof at Duke. He's a total stud, too. ;)
Glass is the greatest teacher that has ever graced that the Duke University community. Glass is the favorite professor you will ever get at Duke University. You will regret coming to Duke if you do not take his classes. I repeat: You will regret coming to Duke or into existence if you fail to take any of his awesome classes.
Everything on the test is covered in class or on the power point slides. All you need to do is come to every class and take notes on everything that is said which is not on the slides. All tests are curved. Glass responds to all e-mails thoroughly. He's also very enthusiastic on the subject which makes his class enjoyable and exciting. Smart guy.
Not easy A.
I am a senior pre-med. I already got into three medical schools. I thought this class would be easy to balance out me going to interviews. And, it turns out that this f(*&*(() class is harder than biochem. Seriously, I have higher grade in biochem than in this class. My friends who took this class before either lie to me or it got really hard.
Easy if you go to class, study the sometimes entertaining powerpoints, and listen to what he has to say. He keeps it interesting with current event stories and his own experience.
One of the bst teachers ive had at Duke. Make sure to take his section, because he makes the material so much more interesting, and it makes the early mornings worth it This class is definitely not an easy class, but if you go to class, and go in for office hours for homework help, you'll be set.
EOS 11 is no longer "Rocks for Jocks"... You must pay attention in class and study before the exams since the exam questions are often challenging. Not a difficult course, but don't just blow it off.
Glass = Awesome. Though I was not interested in earth science at all before, Glass' lectures were clear, interesting, surprisingly relevant, and often funny. Definitely take this if you need an NS. It's not something you can completely blow off, but it will be interesting, enjoyable, and you'll learn a lot. NOT an easy A, but definitely worth it.
Excellent Professor. Hilarious in class and very enthusiastic. One of the best lecturer I've had, and I'm a senior. Do not leave Duke without taking his class. Tests cover tiny details, but not hard if you study. Also offers extra credit, so most people got As.
NOT an EASY class
This class is not easy. I heard this section is the harder of the two. The tests go over very, very minute details that were sometimes only glossed over in class, and the homework assignments were very unclear. Still, Professor Glass is a great lecturer. Extra credit was helpful, but one last warning: It is not easy.
Glass is a great teacher, very enthusiastic and accessible. EOS11 is deemed one of Duke's easy classes. This is only true IF you attend class. If you go to class, pay attention, and study some for the test you will get an A. If you don't go to class and study last minute expect closer to a C. I'd recommend taking him, but go to class or else.
I have taken EOS 11 and 12 with Glass and he is amazing. Neither are difficult classes and have the potential to be simple lecture-courses, but Glass is so enthusiastic and spends so much time preparing visuals that everything sounds exciting. Definitely take a class with Glass!
This class was horrible. I took earth science in both middle & high school (got A's both times), and I studied for every exam in this class. Yet, it is BY FAR my worst grade of the semester. He tests on random, useless facts he casually mentions, not the important material you would intuitively try to learn. Only take if you have a lot of free time
He is a great guy who loves teaching but his tests are horrible. he's questions are tricky for no reason and he will test on thins he will say once in class that is not not slides. if you dont want to memorize a bunch of random facts, dont take this class
Although I did not receive the grade I was hoping, I really enjoyed Alex Glass's teaching. He is incredible enthusiastic about geology. I had NO interest in science AT ALL (Humanities, woot woot!), but his class got me hooked on learning more about the Earth. I know, sounds cheesy, but he's great :)
Alex is a fantastic professor and very entertaining. Even if you're not super interested in the subject, he makes class engaging. However, his tests are VERY detail-oriented, which makes them really hard to prepare for.
Prof Glass is enthusiastic, loved his animations and appreciated the analysis of Japan earthquake. Very friendly and helpful, organized fantastic trip to marine lab. Tests are very detailed oriented and have to be memorized to score well
Exams are not fair! He asks random facts.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had. The class isn't easy per se but everything you need to know is in the lectures so the textbook is basically useless. His tests are very detail-oriented but if you study in advance they're fine. I have no interest in the subject whatsoever but his classes are still very engaging
He is a interesting professor and always makes the class laugh. But his lecture is pretty unorganized. i feel like he just writes down some random facts that in his mind.(especially the part about marine animals!) the tests aren't that hard but he puts so many details and random facts in them
I enjoyed the content of this class, especially the third section which focused on life in the ocean. There is little work to be done for the class but the tests are very hard. Also, there is a mandatory field trip to the Marine Lab for the weekend, which I was not aware of before enrolling, but it was fun. Don't expect an easy A.
Awesome class!
This class is super easy. Exams are almost entirely based on the slides with a few questions based on his lecture. Although the lecture can be skipped, if you attend most of the classes and cram the slides, you are ensured a great grade.
Must go to class if you want a good grade since a lot of the exam material is based on what he says in lecture. Exams are not comprehensive but are more like trivia. Also beware of study sessions since he tends to mislead you and ends up covering different material on the exam. The trip to the marine lab is a total flop and not worth the time.
Don't expect an easy A. Tests are very detail oriented & require studying. If you study the lecture slides, though, you will do well.
Chill bro. Very interesting lecturer. Makes something that could be impossibly boring interesting. Catch is that tests can be pretty hard in that you really have to know everything he talked about in lecture to do well.
Grade is based on tests which are drawn solely from the lecture. Show up to class and pay attention, and you'll get a good grade. Glass is a great professor for non majors because he brings out a childlike wonder about the earth and universe which makes the dry scientific material more engaging. Trees friendly (rocks for jocks, get stoned)
Professor Glass was great. While some of his test questions were quite difficult, he is an excellent lecturer and his power point presentations are out of this world! I would highly recommend him as a professor.
Prof Glass is a boss, enough said! It was fun digressing during class and talking about sci-fi and philosophy and other random stuff, though he made the class content pretty interesting as well. I'd definitely take another class with him!
Professor Glass is an awesome lecturer, but he's also interesting outside of the class. While I have to say he sometimes doesn't have his stuff together, he does a great job regardless. Definitely make use of regrades, because his TA's tend to not speak the best English, but he's great about giving points back. Take his class.
Great professor! Course material itself could be extremely complicated but Professor Glass manages to explain it in interesting and understandable ways. Lectures are always interesting and keep my attention. One of the best class I have taken!
Fantastic professor. Engaging lectures. Had no interest in geology before taking this course, but looked forward to it every week. Highly recommend it, and not terribly hard. But study!!! I bombed the first midterm because I didn't think studying was necessary and then had to absolutely pull it out at the end.
This guy is a legend. He really loves his powerpoints, for good reason, they're incredible. He's really good though, but you have to go to class and actually study for the test
Nice professor in general. Tests tend to be tricky as materials from extra credit assignment have been involved. Recommended for students with perfect attendance.
Professor Glass is the best professor I've had at Duke so far. He's very engaging and he makes his lectures fun. I actually looked forward to going to class with him as the professor, and he makes lots of jokes and makes things easy to understand. His tests are very detail-oriented, so you should go to class and take good notes.
Professor Glass's Dynamic Oceans class was one of the most interesting I have ever taken at Duke. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material, and you can't help but become infected by his excitement. His lectures are always interesting and his powerpoints are AMAZING!!! Definitely would take another class with him.
Alex Glass is the man! This guy is awesome to listen to. He splits things up nicely between material, some peer interaction, and cool life storiesfield experiences. He really makes class enjoyable. He jokes a lot and keeps the mood light. Pretty hilarious at times. Super knowledgeable. Make sure to show up to class and study for tests.
The class is interesting and professor Glass is one of my favorite professors of all time. He is absolutely hilarious. Tests are hard (all multiple choice) because they ask about very specific details, so it is necessary to memorize everything he says in class if you want an A.
His lectures are very interesting and engaging. However, his tests are relatively hard because you have to remember all the details from lectures and slides.
Glass is hilarious, down-to-earth, and my favorite professor I've ever had. His class is NOT hard if you go to class and take notes well. Study in groups and you'll be fine. He curves tests that are ENTIRELY MULTIPLE CHOICE. I'm not even interested in science or the environment at all but I actually looked forward to class with Glass. Just Awesome!
He is an amazing lecturer and person. His entire class is graded off of three tests and a field trip to the Marine Lab. This is good as long as you study for the test. When i say study, i mean actually study! This class can be difficult if you do not memorize his lectures. Also, you must goto class because his notes are spoken with help from ppts.
He's a really cool professor who's genuinely interested in what he's talking about. Definitely come to class since thats what tests are based on. He said he would record and post the lectures but he didn't record half of them which made it hard to study for the classes I missed. Even though tests are multiple choice he will find ways to trip u up
Professor Glass is excellent in clarity and conciseness, so long as you attend class. I took this class thinking it would be an easy A and while I got the outcome I wanted, I studied hard for the tests. If you do not show up to class, there will be questions that he only gives information for in person or over audio (and I wouldn't count on audio).
Professor Glass is hilarious. Tests are a bit tough so make sure to study the fine details. I would definitely take him again.
EOS 102 is an interesting class. Alex Glass is a great professor and his powerpoints are the best i've seen in all my life. However, many people drop after the first midterm, only 20% or so get an A and the rest will get Bs and Cs. If you love to memorize information you will not likely use after the class (unless you major in EOS), take this class
Great professor with great lectures. Barely any out of class work but the tests are very difficult. Be prepared to study a lot for them and don't expect an A.
Glass is geeky adorable and a fantastic lecturer - I really learned a lot in his course and he is entertaining and creates spot-on Powerpoints. I went in to this class believing the "Waves for Babes" reputation and expecting an easy A, but I studied really hard to end up with a B. Take the first test very seriously, that's where I went wrong.
This was an interesting class, and Dr. Glass is a hilarious professor. However, this class is definitely not an easy A. It is possible if you work hard, but the tests are extremely specific making it impossible to do well if you don't really know the material. I recommend this class only if you're ready to do work even when it's not "assigned".
I heard this class was easy but it really wasn't. There are only a couple of tests and one paper. Tests are pretty difficult and it's not easy to do well in the class if you don't ace everything. Overall, not a bad class but don't underestimate the amount of studying you need to do in order to make an A.
Glass is the man - he's a funny, friendly guy with amazing Powerpoints and interesting lectures. Dynamic Earth is NOT easy. Not that hard either, but test writing makes things tougher. EOS 101 definitely wasn't the joke I expected. Pulled all-nighters for the midterms, ended up with a 91 and missed an A by two test questions, but heck, my fault...
Prof. Glass is an awesome professor. Even if you don't find the subject particularly interesting on its own, you will with him. The class wasn't too difficult but don't go in expecting it to be easy. You definitely need to pay attention during lectures and constantly take notes. The exams are pretty tricky even though they're multiple choice.
EOS 101 is definitely not as easy as people make it out to be. Rocks for Jocks? more like Rocks for Geniuses. The material is boring, but Glass does what he can to make it interesting. Funny guy. Tests are multiple choice but are quite difficult, anything he's ever said in lecture, even in passing, is fair game. Don't skip lecture.
Amazing lecturer, very funny, slides don't have many words so you have to process the information and take good notes, exams are the only difficult part but you can do well if you study
No work for this class except the tests and one paper. TESTS ARE HARD. Write down everything he says in class!
Prof Glass is fantastic and I loved his oceans class. I'm premed so I didn't have to take his class for any credit, but I'm glad that I did. That being said, don't go in assuming the course is going to be easy. You definitely have to go to lecture and take great notes, but he makes it a ton of fun and lecture is never boring.
Alex is super funny and a GREAT lecturer. He is very unorganized but it didn't really bother me. Everybody takes Rocks as a joke NS class, but is NOT as easy as it is made out to be. I made the mistake of only going to class a couple of times for the first test. Didn't work out and the first test made it impossible for me to get an A. GO TO CLASS!!
To be successful in his class, all you have to do is show up to lectures and pay close attention. Also, be sure to diligently study for exams. This course is rather straightforward if you take it seriously. Glass is rather interesting about 70% of the time but the other 30% can be hard to stay awake.
He is a good lecturer. Just pay attention during lectures and take good notes No homework. The final paper is easy because you basically get the entire semester to work on it.
He was a good lecturer and the class had some interesting parts, but some parts were boring because they were too specific. His slides didn't have much information so you have to go to class and pay attention. Average grade was a B. Negatives were him missing some classes and he said he would post grades that night but then posted a week later.
Alex Glass has to be one of my favorite professors at Duke. He is very passionate about geology/ bio-geology, and from this, he knows a lot about the relation of these topics to those of human history and interaction. If you allow yourself to see and understand his passions, you will learn a LOT. Take a class with him, and do so with an open mind!
not necessarily the easy a it used to be. tests almost exclusively assess the most insignificant of facts rather than concepts taught in class.
This class is definitely not easy as people say it is. He speaks extremely quickly which does not allow you to write down everything he says. His exams test you on the most insignificant parts of his lectures. I would not recommend taking this course.
Course structure makes succeeding on exams (the vast majority of your grade) a challenge. There is minimal context on his presentations and he does not record his lectures which makes studying almost solely based on your notes. Questions asked are absurdly random and specific. The exams feel like a guessing game. Good lecturer, awful course.
he is obviously very passionate about what he is teaching and tries to make boring lectures more interesting, however, this class is extremely difficult. The test questions are all extremely specific and you must write down everything he says during class. Would not recommend taking it if you want an easy A, even a B is hard to attain.
I wasn't a big fan of his lectures, but Professor Glass was my friend's favorite professor. Easy material, but take the class seriously. Grade based on 3 midterms and a 7-page book report. Other than book report, barely any homework is assigned. Not particularly interesting class, though, so wouldn't recommend taking it just for the NS credit.
Professor Glass is a good lecturer and seems like a great guy, but the tests are SO hard and worth 90% of your grade. They're based mostly on lectures, which aren't recorded, slides aren't very helpful, and he talks fast so it's hard to write everything down. I thought it'd be an easy NS, but I'm not even going to end up with a B ://
I took both EOS101 and EOS102 with Professor Glass for the NS credit. I loved him as a professor. He was hilarious and genuinely tried to make the material somewhat interesting for students who may not enjoy science. It is extremely important to write down nearly everything he says so attending class is pretty important. Almost no homework!
He is one of the most interesting professors in Duke. Knowledgeable about his field and passionate for teaching. If you dig into environmental science, you should not miss his classes. Super
He is clearly very passionate but often speaks extremely fast. His tests (which make up like 90% of your grade are all multiple choice. BUT they test on what seems to be unimportant/highly specific information. Attending lectures is a must to do well, and try to write down everything he says. Recording the lectures on your phone is very helpful.
Professor Glass is incredibly passionate and engaging in class. He's supportive and will always answer questions you have for him about the material. The syllabus is quite carefully outlined so you can track your grades. No daily homework and no textbook is required. Take diligent notes and attend the pre-exam review sessions to do well on exams!
you really need to show up to class for his lectures because his powerpoints only have pictures, but if you ask he typically records the lectures and posts them on his website. his tests are deceptively difficult, and some of the questions seemed out of the blue, but if you study you'll be fine.
Passionate and capable lecturer! Handled online classes the best of all my professors, with accessible and high quality lectures. There was clear and empathetic communication throughout the year and deadlines+expectations were extremely transparent. Exams and quizzes can be extremely specific, so taking detailed notes is key.
Even with an asynchronous class, Glass managed to be the best professor I had this term. Had more office hours than anyone I've ever had, most clear grading criteria at Duke. Can easily work this class into your schedule and get an A without killing yourself.
Alex is hilarious but class is not that interesting, and much harder. The "waves for babes" nickname is so inaccurate if he's the professor. Definitely easy if you are good at memorizing random pointless information, but otherwise not.
Following lectures can be frustrating. Slides were basically photos, and Alex gave vague definitions (Google gives clearer ones). He often assumed students know all geology terms, so he would mention some terms w/o explaining them. Throughout lectures I kept pausing and googling. Imagine listening in person and testing on tiny info closed-notes.
Relatively straightforward class. Came away from it with a very good grasp of how our planet works. I always found lectures to be engaging and interesting, without focusing too much on the small details that are not relevant for a broad understanding. He does a good job of showing why every topic is exciting and impactful
By far the best professor in the Nicholas School.
An incredible lecturer! Take good notes and you should be fine. I highly recommend this class, especially if you're passionate about sustainability and conservation because his classes help you understand the science behind very relevant issues.
Loved dynamic oceans so much. Great lecturer, super interesting, really cares deeply about the subject. Easy to get an A if you take notes during the lectures and do your homework. Fair grader.
Great Professor. Would Definitely take again.
Tests rote memorization, but pretty easy. I found the material interesting but the lack of tangible samples (or a lab/geology component) made it very dry at times. Huge lecture class typically, so there isn't much engagement. Glass is an excellent lecturer, and passionate about what he professes.
Glass is a GREAT professor! Lectures can be a bit dry at times, but he does his best to keep them engaging & you can tell he's super passionate about what he does. He's very accessible outside of class and always willing to clarify something. It was mainly memorization for the tests and homework, but the review quizzes were super helpful! Big fan!
Prof. Glass is a super nice guy, not the most engaging class if you aren't interested in the topic but the workload is very light and the midterms are super easy if you study beforehand (just memorization and most of the exam questions are exactly the same as the practice tests he provides)
Amazing class!!!! It got me so excited about geology, and Professor Glass is SO passionate about the subject, it's contagious. Now I'm walking around and analyzing rocks everywhere, and dreaming to go to Mount Helena. Take notes during the lectures, do the quizzes and you'll be ready for the exams.
All around great person, and it shows. Glass knows how to give engaging and funny lectures; he genuinely wants to hear your questions and always asks if his explanation makes sense. His homework quizzes help you study for the exam. I'm not really inclined to science, but I found his class to be really enjoyable. Consider taking 103 with Glass!
Really nice guy, super relaxed class. Great NS credit for people for whom science isn't their thing. Learned a ton
While I would say that this class isn't quite as easy as people make it out to be, it is one of the easiest NS credits you can get. Glass is a really nice guy and good lecturer. If you do the optional review quizzes multiple times, you will do well on the exams. Highly recommend for an easy NS.
Dr. Glass is the best. Took 403, 102, 101, 289A with him and plan to take the rest of his courses before I graduate. Amazing lectures- complicated material at times but all his courses are set up for students to succeed. Hilarious and very knowledgeable- take a field course with him!
Glass is a very passionate and inspirational professor. He very clearly cares about the environment and what we as students can do to make an impact in the world, however his lectures can be quite long and verbose and aren't very interactive. Tests are pretty easy as long as you pay attention a little bit you'll likely pass.
Glass himself is a character but once you accept that you'll be fine. He loves to joke and teaches really interesting material even if he isn't the best lecturer. Cares about his students and offers flexible Zoom office hours. Assignments and exams are easy if you put in effort, 3 hours memorizing terms on quizlet got me a 98% exam avg across the 3
Entertaining lectures and super fair tests (just know the slide material).
While the easiest class I've taken at Duke, I would not call it an "easy A." The material and content were straightforward and interesting to learn about, especially with Dr. Glass, but the midterms were sometimes difficult to achieve a raw score of 90 or above. Most people likely end up with A's, but some Pass/Fail the class from what I heard.
Professor Glass brings the material to life with engaging lectures. While not an easy "A" class, the tests are fair if you stay on top of the slides. For study prep, I found unstuckstudy and the optional quizzes very helpful alongside the free textbook.
Professor Glass is really passionate about teaching about the climate and this class is great! As long as you do the review quizzes you'll do well on the midterms. Lectures are interesting and his slides are clear.
He is a really funny lecturer and is very passionate about the topics. The tests are all multiple choice and exactly what you cover in class. The optional review quizzes have questions that are word for word on the test. If you don't go to class you will not do well because he does not post the lecture recordings.
Professor Glass is an amazing lecturer. He's so passionate about geology, and it shows in how clearly he explains everything. I went to every class—even though attendance wasn't required—because he made it so interesting and funny. The tests were fair if you paid attention and read the slides. I'd love to take another class with him in the future.
Lectures seem rehearsed in the worst way possible and are downright excruciating to sit through, as Prof. Glass is under the impression that repeating something will inspire increasing amounts of wonder. He tries very hard to be "cool" in class but manages to make himself sound like an angsty middle schooler that just discovered the f-bomb.
Would recommend any class he teaches, amazing lecturer, super passionate about geology, funny, tries to make class entertaining. If you literally just go to every class, pay attention and take notes, studying for the exams will be very easy and doable to get an A.
Boring lectures with the same reused slides. Most of the students don't attend these lectures since he doesn't take attendance, and there isn't really any reason to go. Graded on very few assignments + a couple multiple-choice exams
