He's a good teacher and is very willing to take time to help you understand something inside or outside of class. He does not like the poeple that don't attend the full lab.
Great proffesor if your new to biology or havnt studied it in a couple years, otherwise you will get bored quick. also invents new rules while some students arnt there which isnt helpfull.
Harris is a good professor. He certainly has a passion for Bio and adds his own humor during lecture. Tips to pass this class: attend ALL lecture and labs if possible, write down everything he puts on slides AND says, fill out every lab completely and get help outside of class. No trick questions on tests, just use the study guides.
Dont need to rent class book but do need Lab book. Uses powerpoints to lecture that you can print. Class is ALL memorization, if you dont have time to memorize parts/definitions/slides/etc you will not do well. Cool/laid back teacher who jokes a lot. Goes over lecture test in detail before giving it out. Labs are much harder tests tho.
Great professor! Willing to do what it takes to help you succeed. Would not take Biology with anyone else!
Drops lowest TWO test grades! Wants to make sure you pass! Great job teaching but he always was slow or late at getting out study material. He emails the study guides and many times wouldn't get them sent out until the day before the test. Crams a lot of info into every test as well and the labs are a joke, yet the tests are hard. STUDY STUDY STUDY
He wants to make sure you pass the class and even drops the lowest 2 test grades. What I really didn't like though was how he did lab. The booklet used is confusing and I haven't learned anything from it. I expected him to teach some during lab but did no such thing. The lab exams are killer. Lecture's too. All he does in lecture is read the slides
He is a pretty good teacher but I feel like he didn't do enough to actually help me learn. The study guides would always get posted a day or two before tests which was not much help at all. He doesn't actually teach much either, just reads the power points. Class is very hard but he does strive to help you in the grade book. Go to class. Take notes
If you have to take this class, take it with someone else. He is very lazy and that doesn't make for great learning. He doesn't instruct during lab but makes his lab tests out of this world hard. When it comes to posting study guides and getting the tests written, he is always late at posting them. Very bad experience in this class.
He's a really cool guy but not a good teacher. Notes for tests always posted late, he never goes over the lab book just has you open it and "do". Only take this class if it's the only class/thing you have to do for that semester.
I loved this class. It was not the easiest class, but he made it intresting. He was willing to help you out if you tried and asked questions. He was not just going t hand you the answers to the test. I really liked him as a teacher.
Alex has a fun easy-going style meant to engage with his students. This is a required class for an A.A. and not a lot of his students will continue on in Biology or Life Sciences, I think he takes that into consideration and makes it interesting yet challenges you to learn more and take an interest.
Hard class do not take if you are not ready to study! But this teacher is the best teacher I have had at Longview even though his class was really hard he made it fun
This is the most difficult instructor I have ever had for a 101 class. He's a nice person. But find someone else who is teaching Biology 101, whoever it is, HAS to be easier.
He is very helpful. The material in it self can be difficult to learn if you don’t read it carefully. He is flexible and willing to work with you as long as your attendance is not poor.
Do not take this class if you are unwilling to study! He is a fantastic teacher who is more than willing to work with you, but his tests are extremely hard. He is very easy going and his classes are enjoyable. His lecture and lab exams are taken directly from the power points and lab sheets!! Study and communication are key in this class!
One would think a 101 class would be easier than this but Professor Harris makes exams so difficult. Lecture/lab exam class averages are below 60% time after time. If the whole class is struggling like this, it has be something he's not doing right. He's really nice and laid back but that unfortunately doesn't outweigh the negatives. STUDY!
Everyone here complaining are all people who average C's. He teaches the class at a freshman level. If you can't handle it, you didn't try hard enough. Read through the chapters, pay attention in lecture, do the labs, receive your good grade. He is laid back and extremely reasonable, always opt to go over tests, he doesn't claim to be perfect.
This is a VERY demanding course. His presentation method could use some work and he gets sidetracked a lot for long periods of time. Know the power-points and the textbook well. His exams are very detailed and are worded difficultly. No study guides and he's vague about exam content. Even after meeting with him, my issues were never resolved.
I had Mr. Harris's biology 101 class last spring. He teaches to class at a college level. Go to every class, and ask for help, if you need to. He is helpfuland friendly but, expects students to study. He'll work with you if you need help.
Weigh this review heavily. I'm currently taking Harris but am familiar with the other MCC bio teachers. For a non-science major, I strongly recommend Harris. If you are heart-set on med school, consider selecting someone more difficult. That said, it's not an easy class. He's very helpful, fair, funny, humble, hard-working, and real. I liked him.
Alex Harris' biology lectures were informative and interesting. You can tell he enjoys what he teaches, which can make a huge difference. He makes humorous comments as well. I found the lab portion of the course more challenging. However, he makes himself available for any students that are struggling.
Highly recommended. His lectures are fun and interesting. He takes into account that not all students taking the class will need biology for the fields that they are in, and teaches accordingly. If you need more, just ask, he is very knowledge. He will work with you to help provide whatever you need to succeed. A dedicated teacher who cares.
This class was very tough, but Mr. Harris was more than fair with us. Occasionally, the test questions were vague. But just ask him and he will clarify what he expects andor is looking for a student to know. For a non-science major, this class is pretty rough, but do your reading and take notesread PowerPoints in lecture and you will do fine.
Mr. Harris is tough but fair. You will earn your grade, but have fun while studying hard for this class, as long as you make friends with classmates, and form a study group, you will do fine. Mr Harris really cares for his students, and wants them to succeed. He will meet with you outside of class to make sure you have a good grasp of the material.
You will learn a lot in Mr. Harris' class. He has a laid back style that makes it easier to learn. He's not easy, but he is fair, and offers great feedback and support. He also makes you laugh with his wit and funny remarks. Keep up, and ask questions. I would take him again for any subject. He knows his stuff, and knows how to reach students.
I had Mr. Harris for Biology 101 in the fall semester of 2014. He met with my fellow classmates and me outside of class (particularly before exams), which was very helpful. Mr. Harris is an expert in life science and he teaches with great enthusiasm. If you want to learn a lot, work hard, and have fun at the same time, take his class.
I had Mr. Harris fall of 2015. His class can be fun at times, others it just gets very annoying. He gets off topic very easy. His test are very hard and some material he gives in his "study guides" is not on the test. Form friendships with classmates to help with these test. He is also a very, very tough grader.
Was super easy and fun for the most part, My lab started dropping 8 weeks in. But he gives extra credit to help out.
Mr. Harris has an outstanding knowledge of Botany. I took him for Biology 104 in Spring '16. Not much assigned hw. However, note-taking during lectures is crucial. The cell biology part of Botany was tough, but if you're a science major you'll appreciate it. He's definitely someone I'd take again. He's hilarious. His wit makes the class enjoyable!
This was one of the toughest classes I have taken. Don't let the 100 level fool you. Mr Harris teaches a majors level curriculum. Pay attention, read lecture material before class, ask questions and you'll do fine. My only downer with him is the frequency of political commentary during lecture.
Mr. Harris is engaging and interesting, and cares about the subject. The class is not easy, but he makes lectures interesting. I would take a class from him again.
Professor Harris is an excellent professor. He knows what he is talking about and his is able to help each student understand the concepts. His exams and quizzes are very difficult and you must study for them. The only thing that I did not like about his is that he put down/made fun of religion and republicans. Republicans and Christians BEWARE.
Mr. Harris is tough but fair. He expects a lot from students, but offers a lot of support and cares about his students. He teaches evolution and climate change as the facts that they are. This does not make him anti-Christian or anti-Republican. His class is open to all points of view. He is fair but firm. He is also funny and uses humor a lot.
Professor Harris is a fantastic teacher, which is sadly all too rare, especially in the Bio Department - I took this class in summer, and it was fast and furious, but no one dropped and the majority of the class did well. He's a tough grader, but fair, very approachable and willing to answer any questions or explain things if necessary. Fantastic!
I wish he didn't get so distracted. Honestly I would learn so much more from better teaching skills. He hasn't once made a power point that you can study off of later. He gives no study materials or even homework, so you can't even have the option to study a piece of graded work. His labs are literally irrelevant as heck. His lectures are too fast.
Mr. Harris is a wonderful professor, but be prepared to work hard. I did well in Biology in High School so I expected this class to be easy, but initially didn't realize how much I needed to study for his tests. Take good notes, READ THE TEXTBOOK, and study well. He makes his expectations very clear, so follow his tips and you'll be set!
professor Harris's teaching skills are very poor, he is a nice and understanding guy but what we discussed in class did not show up on tests whatsoever. about 6 people ended up dropping his class and our class average was mainly failing.
Harris is a very nice guy, he seems to be knowledgeable. His classes are boring and long, he tries to make it fun but the materials he goes over are never on the tests and expects everyone to know everything. I ended up dropping and along with like 6 other people in my class. I recommend Kopecky for biology instead.
Professor Harris is a great guy, but not such a good teacher. his class is test heavy and you only get one chance for extra points and that is for not messing up in lab. all grades in the grade book is test and quizzes. he does make class enjoyable but you have to already have a good background of biology if you want to pass the class.
Professor Harris teaches a college class. You must be prepared to study a lot and READ THE TEXTBOOK. He is a great teacher and his exams are fair and he offers a lot of points. He is available for help outside of class and cares about the progress of his students. This is college, so it is NOT going to be like high school so don't expect it to be.
I can not express this enough do not take this professor. He is a super nice guy but he teaches BIOL 101 like it is an advanced level course. I was studying 3 hours a day on this course and still failed the tests. Over half of the class dropped at midterm.
The lectures are heavy, no study guides or take home homework to study for tests, and only 1 chance for extra credit that will barely make you pass the class. He said: "this class requires hours of studying a day. If you cannot do that because you are busy, then quit your job and move in with your parents." I wish the best for you if you take him
He's a really cool guy and a great teacher. I really enjoyed this class. As long as you study his study guides and pay attention in class you'll get an A
Overall good experience. He was very helpful when we had to transition online due to the COVID 19. All of his test material will come straight from lecture so I didn't use the book too much but to clarify something from his powerpoints.
I am a Bio major and have taken harder bio level classes. We started the class with 25 students, I dropped beginning of March, and there were 4 students left. He brags about how many students drop his class. I had the highest grade of the class with a D+. When I went to him for help, he was very rude and disrespectful. A very petty and rude man.
Alex Harris is the single worst professor I have ever had. He proudly announced that he regularly fails the majority of his students. His lectures are pompous and wandering, and he asks questions on the few tests he gives that are intentionally confusing and obscure. More than 50% my classmates dropped just to avoid him. Run the other way!
Professor Harris was a delight and made online learning through the pandemic smooth and enjoyable. For each lecture, he provided lengthy note documents that had ALL information for the exams. HIs exams are tough but if you study you'll be okay. Expect to take a LOT of notes. He elaborates very thoroughly on each topic.
Doesnt give homework or study guides wont let us keep our tests yelled at kids for being on their phones preached to us that we shouldnt eat meat how kids were bad and we should stop having children said if we didnt believe in evolution we were dumb for not excepting the facts and were awful if we use plastic would not recommend taking his classes
Super nice guy. Awful teacher. He does not believe in study guides. Does not help you to know what to study. Most people in the class have a D or dropped. Admitted his powerpoint are 10+ years old and also forgets what questions will be on test. No homework or quizzes just test. Only go over powerpoint, rambles a lot. Would not recommend taking.
Professor Harris has a laid-back style which really helped me relax and learn the material. He is friendly and approachable and quite knowledgeable on the material. Study the Power Points and you'll do fine. Your grade is based on lecture and lab exams so there are no quizzes or extra credit. He is available outside of class. He's tough but fair.
Harriss lectures are very entertaining. He has a fun personality and will stay after class to answer questions. If you pay attention in lecture, you will pass his class. He is a fair grader. If few people get a question correct on a test, he will throw it out and re-explain the subject so we understand. He is passionate about Botany.
He is a nice teacher. BUT grades so tough. For example, on one of the lab exams, he counted every question wrong that was not uppercase. The grading is very petty and it's hard to pass.
Professor Harris was incredibly difficult and only graded based on tests, so if you failed or messed up even once you were pretty much failing. That and he graded incredibly tough, if you even messed up on capitalization of one word you missed two points, rather the question was right or not. Would not recommend this professor.
Very nice guy just not a good professor. He struggles to stay on topic during lectures and will go off on a tangent. Averages on tests were rarely above a C-. Doesn't offer much help and there are no study guides. Dock points for grammar as well. Nearly half of the class dropped mid semester. Do not recommend Mr. Harris.
Professor Harris is a good mix of intelligent, hardcore, funny, and inspirational. He designed his class to be mentally challenging in each aspect. This pushes students to really grasp his teachings. He inspires me to go the Biology route. I adored his class. He is very funny too, and adds interesting quirks to his lectures to make it appealing
Harris was overall a good professor, although attendance is key. Lab tests are fill in the blank and lectures test were very powerpoint heavy. He was funny and talkative but only if you struck up the conversation first.
Students tests account for 100% of what your grade will be meaning there are no assignments and if you are a bad tester you are out of luck. questions are counted wrong if they do not use perfect punctuation and capitalization always. He admits to failing more than half of his students each semester and does not allow any test retakes OR makeups.
Professor Harris' biology 101 course is straight forward. He expects students to attend class regularly, ask questions in class, take notes, and read. He gets most (if not all) of his questions from the PowerPoints. I found him to be knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. There are no surprises on lab exams. I plan to take his botany course.
Professor Harris is very passionate about biology. He's also a very nice person. Have good attendance and take lots of notes. His lecture exams are from the PowerPoints which he posts all at the beginning of the semester. Ask questions on what you don't get. Everything we covered in lab was on the lab exam so no surprises. Open labs preview exams.
I took Prof. Harris for botany which is a major's course. Be sure to study the PowerPoints and do the text reading. Labs back up what was in lecture. It's not an easy course but you have to know these things as a bio major. He is available outside of class and is super nice. All exam are very straightforward from lecture and lab. Would take again.
Study the PPTs, do the reading, and take notes. Try not to be absent as you need the lectures to do well on the exams. Lectures, then exams, simple. Labs are straightforward, everything we covered in lab was on the exam so no surprises but study and ask questions in lab. Super nice and always available outside of class. Some extra credit.
Mr. Harris' biology 101 class was excellent. I learned so much about biology and also about nutrition. He's very knowledgeable about biology, and he's a very nice person. Take your notes, study the PPTs, do the readings, and participate in labs. The class exams were multiple choice and lab exams were short answer. He offers some extra credit too.
No assignments, it's only tests and they count for 100%. Tests cover a lot of content, so make sure to study beforehand. Tough but fair grader, marks wrong if capitalization or spelling is incorrect, but I understand. He's a great person though and very willing to help you both in lab and out of class. I would take his class again!
Professor Harris was a great teacher. However the class is only graded by how well you do on the tests, there is no homework besides just studying for the tests. His lab exams are fill-in-the-blank as you move around stations, and he does count off for incorrect spelling. His lectures are entertaining, but 100% pay attention and take good notes!
The only grades he inputs are test grades. Class is very lecture-heavy, but he doesn't provide any credit for attending every class. Much of the material wasn't in the lecture, and he expects us to be perfect biologists within one semester, which is entirely unreasonable. No study guides were ever provided, not even for the final.
Very test heavy, only grades on tests so if you aren't a good test taker do not take his class. Only lectures on the ppts and gets off topic easily. Does not provide study guides, will count things wrong based on punctuation and spelling. Does not allow retakes or make-ups. Makes questionable comments towards class. Nice guy, not a good professor.
Spelling during lab exams will determine your over all grade so make sure and learn the spelling
DO NOT TAKE HIM! his class is not worth the stress of trying to pass tests and learn to be perfect at grammar or spelling unless you are going into biology and have a true passion for it. He makes the gen ed biology class too difficult when most students are there just to fill a required class.
Prof. Harris is by far the best professor I have ever had! If you try and use the advice his gives you, success in this class is guaranteed! I truly think that anyone can excel in this class, you've just gotta want it an put in the work for an A. I recommend everyone to take this class!
The ones who rate this professor poorly are the ones who don't want to put in the work. He's willing to work with you and he genuinely wants you to succeed. Take his advice to heart and prioritize your education and you'll be just fine
There's a reason why people who rate this professor. poorly have low grades in the course; they don't want to put in the work and would rather blame the professor. Many people get high A's in this class, the professor is great and bc it's a biology class, ofc it will challenge you. That's kind of the whole point of college.
This class was incredibly difficult for me. I felt I was put at a disadvantage from the start; with no study guides as well as constant heavy weighted exams. Be prepared to make your own study guides with little to no guidance. If you're a poor test taker DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He was a very nice guy I just wish he were a better professor.
9 exams and 10 quizzes total for bio124. will not give study guide but extremely vague about what's on the test. if you work 20 hr or more per week or have kids, don't take his class. you can feel 100% confident about what you studied, take the test, and still fail from how obscure tests can be sometimes. he's funny sometimes at least.
Do not take this class if you are a bad test taker. His lectures are very interesting and he makes it fun and is overall a very nice person but if you're not studying for multiple hours a day you won't pass. Labs were the worst and soooo much information to remember it was awful. Also there is no assignments, just labs and lecture tests.
you have to be very independent to pass his class
Most of my class dropped or failed and all suffered. I barely passed with a C, when I have only gotten A's before. There is no homework, no study guides and no help from him. He said we have to study for 13 hours a week to succeed in his class. He often gets off track in his lectures and goes on tangents. The only grades are the tests. DO NOT TAKE!
This professor ruined my 4.0 GPA. If you're a bad test-taker, then prepare to suffer because that's ALL he grades. The class is interesting, but he always rambles and wastes time talking. Lectures and textbooks NEVER FULLY cover exam content. Spelling matters, and you need MANY hours to study. If you're looking for a lab class, please reconsider!
If you have a life, you will not get an A. Are you willing to commit your entire waking life studying for his classes? You still will probably not get an A. Do you plan on having a competitive GPA for graduate school? His classes will only lower it. Do you plan on liking biology? He will change that. He will never let you have your papers back.
majority of the bad reviews are people who genuinely did not put enough effort into the class. i work 6 shifts a week and have 11 credit hours and still managed to stay up to date in classes. He's a very caring professor, funny, and gives great examples in-between slides so we have enough time to take notes! best lab focused class because of him!
Don't reccomend this professor, the only things that count toward your grade are exams amd quizzes. He recently started giving study guides but they are full of grammar and spelling errors and do not include everything that will be asked of you. My last 2 labs were over 2 videos, one of which from 2005. I will be filing a complaint with the school
Great professor with a good sense of humor who truly cares about his students. However, it is incredibly difficult to get an A. If you're taking this course, write down everything he says and study everything, even the things you don't think will be on the test.
He's got a great sense of humor and is a cool dude, BUT he was reported so many times by other students that he was forced to give out study guides and let us use notecards on the tests mid-semester. There are ONLY tests, no assignments, no homework, so do not take him if you get nervous during tests, like I do (hence my bad grade). GOOD LUCK.
