Got me interested in CanLit. Class is awful unless you TALK. Encourages group discussion, not traditional approach ie taking pages of boring notes. I had fun.

Dr. Hart is a very hard marker. Except your mark to drop drastically. In class discussions are interesting if you get involved and are interested in current events or philosophical ideas. Very helpful if you have problem.

A very good prof. I took his class in the summer 2003 and it was very fun. I learned a lot from him and the other students. He is very passionate about English and very approachable. I would definetly recommend him and this class.

dr. hart's one of the best profs i've had at ubc, by far. he's smart, engaging, and not an easy marker, but a fair one. i'm no keener, but i didn't have any trouble getting a good mark. i would take a class with him again in a heartbeat.

Horrible horrible teacher. Hart doesn't give clear instructions on what he expects from essays and marks terribly difficult. Even if you're really hard working he may still fail you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, AVOID HIM WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT !!!

I have never had a prof this difficult! The discussions are relaly intresting but because of the prof they seem to head into a bias, self-serving direction. He does have a huge bias in everything!!! It shows in the way he marks too...Take a different section!!!!

NEVER TAKE A COURSE WITH HIM. i took a summer course in 2001, although the discussions were good, he is very prejudiced and in some ways, even ****. nothing is good for him, his marking is skewed and our class average was a C. dont recommend taking any courses with him.

well i am not a really good english writer (proof: i took the lpi 20X). he marks hard but pretty fair. i think the rating is not really acurate. the class average is 66%. i got 64%. after reading the rating i was expecting his class to be difficult.he is clear on his expectation. final is easier mid

Ok, I took ENG 112 2 years ago with him and he was awesome. Very engaging in class discussions. Yes he marks hard but he is very fair. I met him once last year on campus and he remembered my name, wow. Pretty impressive.

Very hard class. Rumors of low class averages are true, at least for Engl 112. Very informative class, lots of good discussions and teaches a lot of material pretty well, just don't expect a good mark unless ur a genius of a writer. Fair marker though. Medium homework load.

He is a fair marker. Difficult, yes, but fair. He leads in-class discussion very well-encourages comments and accepts new ideas. Readings are usually short but very interesting. Very funny and kind man too. Definitely not a prof for attaining high marks but an awesome prof for learning English.

The rumours about Hart's English classes are true: the low class averages, the hard marking, etc. He is NOT subjective, though; as long as you can effectively support your opinions and express them well, you'll do fine in his course. Speak your mind in class and you'll score with him.

I really enjoyed Dr. Hart's class. The key to doing well in this class is being involved and showing interest. If you care about what you speak and write about it is obvious to the professor and you will do well in the course. English is not meant to be an average boosting subject area, stop whining people!

He really encourages class discussion and for you to think on your own and come up with your own opinions instead of forcing his own on you. interesting readings for the most part. i went to his office hours one day and he was a big, big help. learn whatever you can from him. it's worth it.

his exams are very random : trivial information he mentioned in class and dates that have not much to do with english. the avg for the midterm for ENGLISH was C- he definitely has favourites so unless ur a teacher's pet, avoid

that "exams are very random" comment seems only applicable to 1 midterm question. final was reasonable. i think he's a good prof, very engaging in class discussions. the readings he chooses for the course span a wide range and are a great intro to canlit. you get out what you put in with dr hart's class. he's really helpful in office hours too.

He's a short, balding jewish guy who has a great sense of humor and he really made the class enjoyable. I didn't do amazingly well, but I am a science student and didn't even want to take the class in the first place. His tests are tough and kinda random, but most of his rants have a point, I'm sure...

ok... da class discussions are ok interesting, and its always discussions, which is why class is behind. Essay instructions are unclear and marks UBER HARD. i gotta A in eng 12 and i got a D for my first essay. he is VERY subjective and doesn't teach well ... but still gives a LOT of work and reading.. prepare to drag down ur GPA.. a LOT !!!AVOID!!

I was not pleased with this class at all... His marking is unrealistic and just plain unfair. While my peers in different sections were getting easy As and Bs, I've been stuck with Cs and B-s (and that's with working my ass off and with a 93% on my Gr. 12 English provincial!) He's a nice guy... but I would much rather be getting good grades.

Though his marking is extremely tough, Professor Hart was pretty much the only teacher I had this term that cared about the success of his students. Class discussions were interesting and overall he was a pretty nice guy... just not when marking.

Alot of work. You have to try really hard. His classes are interesting, and you can learn alot of Canadian history. I had friends with low marks, but had a friend with an A and myself a B+ so I think it's up to you to earn your grade. Remember to go to class, he takes attendance.

BAD class! TONS of work! He will make you buy class notes for $65 on top of the $100 you will dish out for the novels. Then will ask you for another $10 for photocopying! Too much work and not a very interesting prof.

Yes, he's a tough one when it comes to marking but he's friendly otherwise. His lectures are quite organized and usually to the point. Prepare to work hard in his class. Here is the key to a good grade in his class: 1) attend, 2) participate, 3) make sure you write coherent, error-free papers (i.e. not last minute), 4) note important names/dates.

Take this course if you are born a talented writer becasue you are not going to get any solid instructions on how to write a paper. A very hard maker who teaches too little and expects much! Marks extremely slow. Got our first essay back when the term was more than half way through. By then it was too late to drop the course.

why are all the good teachers such hard markers? Dr. Hart's classes are very enjoyable (plus attendance is mandatory) and he really destroys your essay. Getting a good mark in his class hard; infact the last two essays i wrote i both go C's on them :( Nonetheless, awesome prof...just don't expect a high grade.

Not recommended. I went to his office hours, attended all but five classes, participated, worked much harder than usual, and still got a mark 10% lower than any of my other English classes at UBC. He puts A LOT of emphasis on GROUP WORK, which I HATE: Who wants to get taught by other students, who have no idea what they're talking about?

Slowest and hardest marker ever, and his comments are not helpful, they are hurtful! Says things like "this comment makes no sense" and "your interpretation is way off". Took this class online, we didn't get our mid-term essays back until 2 days before the final term paper was due. Don't take this class unless you are a perfect student!

This man is in the top 3 worst teacher I've ever had during my 6 years of a double major. While knowledgeable, he remains useless, unclear on essays requirements, full of himself, sucks out as much $$ out of you as he can for handouts. I showed his syllabus to a dozen lit and english teachers from 3 schools and they thought he was insane! Nuff said

DO NOT take an online course with him. He was barely present in the course at all and relied on the students to teach each other the work. He is a hard marker, and has an incredibly slow return rate. I personally got a B in the course but the class average was a 51. There's no doubt in my mind that his high standards were to blame for the average.

I took a class with him during the summer of 2008 and it was a well-organized and interesting class. For those of you who say he's an impossibly hard marker--I got an A+. For those of you who say he doesn't give clear expectations--he gives more handouts on expectations than any prof I have ever had! Lovely man, great sense of humour, good class.

He assigned us 4 essays and said that he'd return them in a timely manner. I got my first essay that I wrote in January in mid-April. I never got my other essays back. He's the slowest marker EVER. We had no feedback and no guidelines as to what he looks for in an essay and therefore had a hardtime for the final...

Hard marker. Useless comments. He can be harsh sometimes. I am not a first English language speaker, I asked him for help with grammar and other basic things, he would just send you off to the writting centre. He doesnt teach. So personally I don't like his class. DON'T TAKE IT!

It's all true. Way too much reading. No instruction. Condescending. Handed in an A+ paper, got a C- back... six weeks later. Drop the class? Too late. Hope you read this before it's too late. Find another way to get your credits. Some suckhole types seem to like him though.

He's a very, very hard marker. The class average was 66% -and I found my classmates quite advanced for a 200-level course. I understand the averages in his class range from the 50's to 60's, never higher. That said, I love his teaching style. He really helped me become more interested in poetry, something I never previously enjoyed.

I took the online Canadian Literature course. I found that there was a heavy reading load. Although Hart did not give a lot of instruction, the directions were pretty clear. I have other online courses and instructor participation is usually minimum. Good course to take if you have the time to do the readings and are comfortable with self direction

If you value your gpa and sanity, do not take this course with him. One of the hardest markers ever, and this is coming from a person with high A's in all high school english courses. Class avg was 68%, extremely low compared to other sections. Plus I learned nothing from him.

Hard marker plus the marks were returned 15 days from the final exam with a final paper still required to hand in. Too much was expected of the students for a 3 credit, one term, second year English class as well as too much online participation. We had to read 2 novels, do two term papers, one group presentation and maintain an online presence.

Don't ever, ever take a course with this man. The online course I took had 0 teaching involved whatsoever, but we were still expected to understand fine points of critical literary analysis, and were marked almost entirely on that. It literally was not in the course materials at all. Class average was 52% in my 2009W section with 8/23 fails.

OK... I think he's pretty good. He keeps the class interestin enough so that I don't fall asleep. HOWEVER!!! he's very hard marker.. WOW.. my tutor has Ph.d. in poetry and she helped me write a paper and I received a fail...a BIG F! anyways don't take it if u value ur GPA.. mark my word and also he's that kind of prof who be serious over grammer...

Very nice and very intersting prof. Got me really into poetry and actually understood them. However he is one of the hardest markers I have ever seen. small mistakes leads to big grade cuts. I'm sure i could have gotten atleast 20 percent higher elsewhere.

This was an awesome course, would highly recommend Professor Hart! The course is set up a bit differently than other ENGL courses. There are ongoing presentations throughout the term done by students, a really good practice for taking any 490 lit seminar course or grad studies program in English. Great, unique course in Jewish Canadian Literature.

Amazing prof. His syllabus is the most comprehensive I've ever seen (16 pages) explaining exactly what he expects. His class is not easy, but it's fascinating and by following his guidelines good marks are easily attainable. He absolutely loves class discussion, so if you want to win brownie points speak up! You won't regret a class with him.

I just received my midterm paper back and HOLY this guy is one hell of a marker. The only reason I like this course is because of the course material. The professor is quite useless. He expects a huge online presence from you when he doesn't have any. Its more than halfway through the term and I JUST got an idea of my marks. Don't take this course

The grades are low. Marks very hard on spelling,grammar and style.. etc. Criteria is provided for all the topics. If you meet all the criteria you now have a chance to pass. If you miss one thing you fail. For a class that most people are required to take he is not a prof I would recommend. GPA killer, if you are mark driven.

Professor Hart is a hard marker. What makes him even more difficult is the fact that he is dismissive when you ask for more critisim or for clarification of why he gave you a certain mark. He gives you vague marks, too, like a letter grade instead of a percentage, which makes it difficult to see how you're doing. I do not recommend him.

A lot of material for a second year course and you've really go to keep up to get a near decent grade. He tells you it demands the same dedication as a normal in-class lecture but I still think it's excessive for a second year course. I agree with the comments below that he doesn't give proper criticism making it difficult to improve.

His initially prompt e-mails and carefully crafted welcome notes might fool you into believing everything is fine. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He demands a strong online presence while offering almost nothing as the term goes on. Course package was useless, you can find every required text online. As an A- student, the final was not easy.

Please professor, mark our papers faster. I didn't get my 2nd and 3rd essay back until the day before the exam so how on Earth was I suppose to know what I was lacking in my writing and how to prep for the final? The marking is unfair too. Cut us some slack if you're not going to return our papers in time for us to see what to improve.

We never got feedback back on our essays, so how were we supposed to learn about what he wanted for our essays? Expectations for assignments were the same sheet for every essay, so we did not know what he was looking for!! Attendance is mandatory. He gives a detailed course outline which is helpful

HELL!! Avoid this professor if you can, extremely subjective and isn't open to other people's opinions. Extremely bias and tough marker. If you're looking to get a high grade in first year english don't enrol in this professor's class. If you make minor grammatical errors he'll fail you. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!! TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Terrible professor, avoid if possible! Essay outlines are extremely vague which isn't helpful. Marking is terribly slow, we only got one essay back in the whole term. Didn't provide students with an idea of what his expectations were and is extremely arrogant.

I am a English Honours student. Trust me, don't take his class. Its not impossible to get a good grade (participate and do the exams like a high school provincial) but he also focuses on technical things a lot more than other profs. He wants a specific analysis and rather not hear your own opinion. He is also quite rude at times.

If you're an English lit major or minor, if you love books, if you love being exposed to new and unique literature taught by someone passionate and wise, then do yourself a favour and take a class with Dr. Hart. I am not a great student - I skipped a few classes, and got behind on reading... I ended up taking a second class with him. Enough said.

AVOID HIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE! Never ever want to see him again after this term's class. He seems like that he doesn't want anyone to pass this course, since the class average is holy C while all other classes have an average above 70. Not very helpful : and the lectures are really boring. Trust me, don't take his class.

I do not understand all the negative comments here. He in fine, helpful in class, and interesting. I got a B with little effort. Give it a go - you will get at least 70 if you can write well.

Just DO the work and you'll be fine. Dr. Hart outlines exactly what he expects at the start of term. Follow the guidelines. Seriously. He expects (shockers) that you actually do the readings and participate.

Im tell you, dont ever choose him. he tries to teach the real stuff here, which is good for some people. But, he is really really a hard marker!!! I woundnt recommend him. another thing is that he doesnt give you feedback in time. it sucks when you get the last 2 assignments back after you have taken the final exam.

Good news: the lectures weren't half bad. Though you might not want to EVER disagree with him. Once his defenses go up, your mark WILL go down. Overall he isn't a bad person, just a very bad prof. Bad news: He's an extremely hard marker. EXTREMELY HARD MARKER. Big GPA dropper. I needed the credits, otherwise I wouldn't have taken the class.

Took during summer term. He's a great, engaging prof. Knows the name of every student in the class (30). Discussion of readings done prior to class for most lectures. Takes attendance, requires textbook for readings, but very knowledgable and approachable guy in many many areas.

Alex Hart is a cruel guy. He is a good prof, very knowledgable and interesting to listen to during lectures. But he grades crazy hard for a first year english class and does not clearly explain what he wants so its very hard to succeed. He seems nice enough but he's unapproachable and basically no help to you becoming better at english

Alexander Hart is actually not a bad professor. He does grade pretty hard, but he provides so much feedback that you can improve a lot in your next essay. My first essay, which was an in class essay, was a C+, but my next essay, a paper we could write at home, was a B+! However, there are so many readings which I think are unnecessary.

I've seen Dr. Hart get a lot of hate but he's not that bad. Just do the readings, attend class and spend time on the assignments (also known as doing what you're supposed to do) and you'll pass. He has meticulously planned every week of the course and puts serious work in knowing his students and learning about them.

I really enjoyed Dr. Hart's lectures. He was really interesting to listen to. Participation DEFINITELY matters, and showing up every class goes a long way. As for the papers, I think he grades way too hard. I don't know anyone who was given a grade higher than a C+ in that class on an essay.

He has decent lectures, however I found him to be extremely rude when you had questions. He is very old fashioned in his views and was unreceptive to other ideas and opinions. I did extremely well in English in high school, and he discouraged me from pursuing further English courses with his bad attitude and impossible expectations.

He was basically impossible to get a good grade from. I got a C on my first paper, worked really hard on my next paper and got it proofread by a Masters student and ended up with another C. He has unreasonable expectations for first year English students and I dont feel confident in my writing skills anymore as a result. His lectures were awful.

A lot of people say that Dr. Hart is tough grader (myself included), but that is relative judgment and statement. The worst thing about him is that your efforts will not be seen. No matter how hard you work during the term, it wouldn't change your mark. He is dogmatic, conservative, rude at times. Do not take a course with him.

I really enjoyed English and even considered a double major. This class and Dr. Hart killed that passion. The in-class discussions rarely have anything to do with English, expectations are unclear. The average for the 1st paper in this class was a C-. Participation is mandatory and worth 15% of your grade. $200 in textbooks too.

He grades super hard, and he does take a long time to grade. By the time you got your paper back it's way too late to abort mission. If I can turn back time I would drop his class in a flash. Unless you are extremely confident in your writing abilities, don't take his class.

He seems nice until you get your first assignment. He is an unreasonable and harsh marker, and despite the amount of effort you put in, you will receive nothing higher than C. (B- if you are an extraordinary writer.) However, do not be discouraged if you get a low mark, because you're still a great writer! (Dropping the course will help your GPA.)

Worst class ever taken. I really thought this class would be entertaining. I was wrong, slack off in attendance or participation? He will make your life hell. Refuses to accept assignments on anything other than in paper and with the transit strike he was extremely rude and simply said we had to submit the paper in person and to figure it out.

This easily became my favourite class this semester as the content was extremely interesting. Very fair grader and is super clear when delivering the material, so it's hard to do poorly on the exams (unless you rarely show up to class). Participation does matter, so as long as you do the readings and speak up once in awhile it's an easy A.

This guy gives a LOT of reading for homework, but you don't have to read them most of the time because he just rereads it during class. He didn't teach much about English - we just read essays in class and he expected us to know how to write essays right off the bat. I wouldn't recommend him for a person who isn't good at English.

Alexander Hart is quite a hard teacher, as he expects students to write as if they are perfect and have all the time in the world to dedicate towards his class. In his third assignment, he expects us to go to the libraries all around campus and find 4 print sources, in a world of digital media.

This course was perhaps the most difficult class I have even taken, but ultimately proved rewarding. Dr. Hart pushes his students to the max, but only to make them better writers and critical thinkers. He is readily available outside of class and via email. Participation, attendance, and reading journals are easy points, but critical for your grade

Contradicts himself by saying the same essay to be a research essay and (literary-analytical essay) on two different instructional documents. 80% of class time is spent waiting for other students to share their reading results so "everyone can participate". He is incredibly nice and generous with extensions if you ask. He's understanding of the online situation and has worked hard to make the course a little bit easier for us. However, he is a hard marker and values participation in class - so be ready to participate! He also doesn't give very in-depth feedback. Overall he's great if you work hard!

Dr. Hart did not adapt his course at all to the pandemic situation, meaning there were still group presentations, and in-class mid-terms and final exams. He is very knowledgable about Holocaust literature, but sometimes seems to value quantity over quality. Write as much as you possibly can on in-class exams!

Alexander Hart is a tough grader, but since taking his class I can safely say that my writing has improved. I didn't need to take notes during his class, for everything could be found in the course novels. This class was so hard to experience I lost 100 years of my life from this class. It has crushed my soul and made my child’s head explode. I can not believe how woke I am after this class. By that I mean I can’t sleep. Mr Hart is the thickest of the all and he a baddie with a fatty. I see the textbook in my sleep paralysis.

This professor was by far the worst I have ever had in my four years at UBC. Not only does he do an astronomical level of readings, homework assignments, papers, and "fun" quizzes for a 200-level course but he has no compassion towards his students when they reach out in genuine need of help. If you take his course, best of luck.
