Great teacher. Just be prepared for an ungodly amount of outside readings that can take up to 2 hours for one article. Take explicit notes on these readings, YOU WILL NEED THEM. Tests are very detailed and involve multiple choice, essays, and short answers. Attendance is highly recommended. Gives lots of extra cerdit.
one of the best professors i've had at TAMU! His lectures were usually interesting (no textbook) all reading links provided on ecampus DO THE READINGS/WATCH THE VIDEOS AND TAKE NOTES ON THEM he likes calling you out in class to talk about them the papers/Critical responses were fairly easy he is the reason i changed my major to sociology :)
I would not recommend this prof. First day of class he gives reasons to get out of his class and I regret not doing that! Unless you have plenty of time to read boring articles and take extremely detailed notes then do not take him. There are other profs that are better/easier for sociology. I absolutely could not stand him and he ruined the class.
Dr. Hernandez is a great professor! He may try to scare you away the first day of class, don't worry, he does it to make sure you take the class seriously. His lectures are the best I have had. Keeps it entertaining and aims to make you think critically. May get uncomfortable with some of the topics. READ the readings/clips BEFOREHAND (for tests).
This was my second semester with him and he is great. lots of reading but the reading is fun and my suggestion is to just take notes when reading so you will be ready for midterm and final. gives pop quizzes but are online and easy to understand. midterm and final are online but not easy so be ready. great prof!!!
Really good professor, really makes the class interesting, and helps you learn the material. However, he grades hard and makes difficult tests. Don't plan on getting an easy A, but plan on actually learning something about our world and society.
Great Professor! He wants you to be prepare for the quizzes, midterm, and final. Lots of reading and it can be hell in that class. His lectures are very interesting but there at times you want to die in that class b/c the readings can be a handful.
There is anywhere from 5-15 readings per week that you NEED to take detailed notes over, as the midterm and final is half readings/half lecture. Prof. Hernandez is funny and makes lectures interesting, but he can be very intimidating. He calls you out in class to see if you've done readings. There's a weekly quiz and also up to 3 pts. extra credit!
This class has a buttload of reading but it's definitely worth it. Go to EVERY class I am the perfect example of both what to do and not to do. The first half of the class, i showed up to every class, read every reading, and i was one of 8 people who got an A on the midterm. Sickness made me miss class a lot after midterms and I ended up with a D.
Take this class if given the chance. It's amazing. The material covered is really interesting, and it's not like any other class you'll take. DO IT.
Amazing lecures & a real mind opening class. He is hilarious but can use "colorful" language which can offend people. If you dont go then you WILL fail. The readings are very interesting but you need to keep up and finish them on time because he gives pop quizzes over them. Take detailed notes in lecture! He lets you use your notes on exams!
Great Professor, but its not a walk in the park. Social problems is a rigorous class when you take it with him but its worth it! Ive learned more in his class than any other I took this semester. Lots of readings but most of it is interesting. Only take if you're ready to work and get the reward.
Dr. Hernandez is one of the best Sociology profs at this school. His lectures are amazing and really makes you learn and grow. If you are looking at an easy class, this is not the one. You will have to work very hard for your grade. Quizzes every week are graded by him, so you won't get the grade immediately.
Dr. Hernanadez is a really good prof, he presented the material in a very interesting way. No textbook but lengthy readings which can be annoying but are worth the read for the most part. He is a very tough grader so you really have to work for your grade. Not many assignments either so do as well as you can on EVERYTHING start to finish.
The content is interesting and the way he presents it is great. The issue is the class set up. There are small 600 word essays due every friday 8pm, 1 big paper that pairs with a project and one final, and weekly quizzes over the 100 readings he gives each week. Do the readings because he calls on people in class. It's too much for a 200 level.
It was my favorite class I've taken so far. The lectures are awesome and the course material is interesting. The downsides are that there is only one test and there is a lot of reading and video watching that he expects you to do outside of class. But most of the readings/videos are interesting and if you do all of that attend then you will pass
There are a lot of readings/videos before every class and an essay every week. However Dr. Hernandez is passionate about what he does and the lectures and readings are very interesting. Most of them are about new tech like 3D printing and AI. It's a very fun and exciting class but you'll have to work. He gives good extra credit opportunities.
He is a GREAT lecturer! He is heavily engaging and makes you actually care about the stuff you are learning. However, he assigns A LOT of reading. So much it makes you want to cry. But if you're willing to work... you will love this class.
interesting class and content, with lots of readings, but test are too difficult ruining the class
The tests/ quizzes are online. With that said they are timed, with very little time allotted. If you are just taking this class for the social & behavioral science credit, I would highly suggest you reconsider.
TONS of foul language everyday in class & in some readings. Midterm & final are only tests. TONS of reading that isn't short or easy. Prof does not uphold the values of Texas A&M in my opinion. He bashes on the university itself & prominent figures of it. Very liberal. Do not take this prof. Find someone else.
wonderful teacher! he is engaging and makes class interesting. beware of his quiz online they are very specific so make sure you do your reading. The CR's were not that difficult but if you put them off you might start crying (if you're sensitive) not because they're difficult but because the material is very personal.
THERE ARE AN INSANE AMOUNT OF READINGS and you have to take detailed notes. This class ruined my ability to enjoy reading for pleasure. The lectures are really engaging however, you have to take good notes. The mid-term and final exams are very stressful. However, this is the only class where I actually learned something to apply to everyday life.
I'm not going to lie, this was a tough, time consuming class but I absolutely loved it. Dr. Hernandez is an incredible lecturer and I could tell he loved the topic. I also love the topic and all the readings, though there were a lot. I recommend Dr. Hernandez but beware, he isn't easy and you will work hard.
Rating a prof shouldn't be about politics. He requires outside readings, yes there is a lot. I managed to get through it though, so can you. Extra Credit opp (DO THEM), go to office hours for any questions! Talk with TA! I loved his class and loved that he opened my eyes to a lot of wrongs in this world. Best lectures i have had at TAMU! Recommend!
one of my all time favorite lecturers. He is SO engaging in his lectures & actually makes you interested. you can tell he loves what he does & the subject. HOWEVER, he definitely does make you work for that good grade. A LOT of essays & A LOT of reading. But the topics are very interesting so it isn't that terrible. Essays are off opinion/evidence
It seems like Hernandez tries to make it hard to get along with him. He frequently calls out specific students in class and ridicules them, making it difficult to even want to participate in discussions. He places a lot of stock in the things that he says in class, going so far as to require you to quote HIM in papers/tests. Avoid him if you can.
Coursework is a little much for an intro to soci class. There are required readings and videos, about 15-20 each week, that you will have to read/ take notes over in depth because they will show up on the midterm and final. Attendance is optional but his lectures are NOT posted online. Prof not for everybody
Dr. Hernandez has amazing lectures, but I think he expects way too much for an intro level course. The information we learned was super interesting and eye opening however I wouldn't take him again simply because of the amount of work he gives. I think the amount of readings, papers, and exam difficulty were ridiculous.
Yes he gives good lectures and gives a better understanding but what he requires is so ridiculous for an INTRO class, take anyone but him. I have heard from people I have talked to that have different profs in soci and I would have easily received an A. I felt as if I took a 300 or 400 level class. He is so liberal and degrades you for not being it
Dr. Hernandez is a great lecturer but he takes himself and this class way too seriously. He gives weekly papers without much time to prepare for and an 8 pm deadline, not midnight. He also grades them super hard so be sure you understand the lecture and readings. The readings can also take awhile to read sometimes so be warned.
Do not take this class with this professor. He takes his intro class incredibly too seriously with too much work. He will patronize you in front of the class for disagreeing with him and his views and often comes across arrogant and dramatic. Only midterm and final with papers and quizzes. I would not take it again.
Amazing lectures, he is unbelievably passionate about his subject. A prof others should base themselves off of. With that being said, he makes you work for your grade, and you will probably fail multiple weekly quizzes. Every time you leave his classroom you are in a good mood because of his amazing lectures. DO YOUR READING AND YOU WILL BE OK!!!!
I started off the class really not fond of the guy. He wasn't happy because our class size was huge, which is understandable, but no need to take it out on students. Now I really like him! He is a really interesting guy and is passionate about his job. Do the readings, show up for class, and ask questions! Loved the subject!
Dr. Hernandez really does care about his students and sociology. As a senior, I wish I would have taken more classes with him here. He puts in as much effort in the class as he expects out of you. His class is about critically deconstructing society. He doesn't lecture with bias, he lectures with FACTS. If you want proff who keeps it real, take him
He made my freshman year terrible. Get ready to read 3 hours worth of articles and books every day of the week. His finals are ridiculously hard and not even worth it. Everyone I know is in a situation for pass or fail, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Hernandez was hands down the worst professor I have ever had. Intro class that is loaded with readings every week, I had to focus on this class more than other classes that were way more important. Extreme liberal views and will take it upon himself to embarrass you if you disagree with him. Do yourself a favor and do not take this class.
Dr. Hernandez is a good lecturer, but he expects way too much for an intro to soci class. You have readings every night and many essays due throughout the semester. There are also 2 essays due the week before finals. His final/ midterm are also extremely hard. If you need this credit, take a different prof.
His lectures are super interesting but this class is an insane amount of work. His exams are really difficult and there are lots of homework and papers. He does his best to trick you on the quizzes and exams so always read the course material, it is really easy to fall behind.
Dr. Hernandez is an engaging lecturer. He is passionate about the material and wants you to learn because of how applicable it is to life. He cares about his students and is very clear about his expectations and always available outside of class and wants you to succeed in the class. Reading required/videos but all FREE and not always long.
HE IS INTERESTING BUT HIS EXAMS AND QUIZZES ARE THE HARDEST I HAVE EVER TAKEN DO NOT TAKE HIM
Lecture heavy, but the lectures are super interesting. If you do not show up, you won't pass. Quizzes are weekly but if you do the reading and watch the videos those are easy also. Tests are very hard but doable if you study in advance
Passionate lectures. Go to class. Read assigned readings. Reach out for help on essays. Prof v smart, sometimes quirky. Conveys info well. Comes off as patronizing, espically when students disagree. Often misstated info to win arguments with students when they disagreed with his points. Students stopped asking questions/giving feedback bc of this
Dr. Hernandez knows what he is talking about, but this class was the hardest class I have ever taken. I worked so hard in his class and still only made a C. His lectures were interesting, but the tests and online quizzes were hard. There was reading assigned every week. If you don't read, don't expect to pass the class.
I really loved Hernandez as a professor when I took SOCI 314! I would recommend him no doubt. If you skip class a lot then this class isn't for you. However, if you go to class it's worth it. His lectures are so interesting because he really cares about his job. He loves teaching and it shows. If you are willing to work, it's a great class!
This class is too particular on quizzes for an intro class especially when reading. Homework can be readings up to 18 pages long with multiple other readings
Terrible professor, tells you he doesn't expect you to memorize anything but then gives you 100+ articles and videos to watch and tells you they will be on the midterm and final. He likes to put his own opinions in the lectures and doesn't seem open to hear anything else even though he preaches about being accepting. Please do not take this class!
A great professor, knows the material very well and is engaging during lecture. He is willing to answer any questions either during class or outside. No textbook only daily readings he provides. Weekly quizzes are somewhat hard. Exams are online and has multiple choice and essay questions. Exams are also more on the difficult side.
This class was difficult, but his lectures were worth it. His homework honestly isn't that bad, there is just a lot of media to cover instead of a textbook. I had a high B in this class until my social analysis paper, which took me all the way down to a C. He was amazing in terms of responding and caring about my concerns. Do the extra credit!
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Assigns an average of 130 min of readings/videos/podcast per week that you are expected to do on your own at home. He then will give you a quiz randomly that you have to take that will be over all of the "course media", and you never know what he is going to test you about specifically.
I loved taking the professors' class but there is a lot of outside work to be done. There are 4 Essays that got progressively longer as the course goes on and 3 Exams. He loves comedians so he shows comedian clips in class to keep it interesting and he is a really good lecturer.
He is THE WORST prof I've ever had. He thinks he's the smartest person in the world and loves being the center of attention. He enjoys making students feel dumb and inferior. If you want to take a sociology course, take Dr. Mestrovic, who actually knows what he's talking about and doesn't need 18-21 yr olds to make him feel like a man.
Dr. Hernandez gives very interesting lectures. I never skipped one bc he doesn't post the Powerpoints so all of your notes must be taken in class, which is what most of the tests are over. Gives a ton of media to read and watch outside of class and the quizzes are way too specific. I failed almost every quiz. Tests aren't bad and lots of essays.
Dr Hernandez had a pretty study-heavy class, and he has high expectations for you to do well. His lectures are fascinating though, and he handles tough issues really well. Theres no textbook but he assigns a lot of outside reading/videos, and you HAVE to keep up with them or youll really fall behind.
If you want an easy A, don't take him. If you want to be challenged to be a better person, expand your perception, and become more motivated and engaged with society as a whole, TAKE DR. HERNANDEZ. He WILL push you, but in the best way possible. SO MUCH WORK, but you will leave the class a better and more informed person. He cares for his students!
Dr. Hernandezs class has been my absolute favorite college course! While you must put in hard work to receive an A, it doesnt entirely feel like work. This class is all about learning empathy, exploring ideology, & challenging perceptions. If you are genuinely fascinated by deep sociology & formulating new ideas, I HIGHLY recommend.
He only provides class lectures and course media entirely based on his views and his views ONLY. The work is doable but be ready to put in lots of hours. The TAs were extremely helpful. You can get an A if you work for it.
The WORST class. It seems Dr. Hernandez thinks his is the only class students take. He assigns a minimum of 15 assignments a week, with each assignment taking at least 30+ minutes to complete. Every lecture/assignment is based off of his opinion, and you are expected to agree. Only plus was there was no exams/quizzes, but SO much work.
This class is a bit of work, but Dr. Hernandez is the best professor Ive ever had. He is super hilarious in his lectures and really makes you think. You can tell he genuinely loves teaching and he made the class super interesting. No quizzes or tests so honestly the workload is totally worth it. Would def take again, easy A if you do the work.
This was the first class I have ever had to q drop in my life. The workload was ridiculous it was like 15 hours a week. We were graded by a computer instead of by himself or the ta. I had heard warnings about this professor but I ignored the cautions. If this class isn't required I recommend you take any other soci class instead.
If you're not willing to work hard, don't take this class. However, for those who want more out of their college education I highly recommend Dr. Hernandez. He has challenged me to grow as a person and sociologist. I have learned to be more empathetic and question everything around me. I am forever grateful to him and his Social Problems class.
His class is easy if you are willing to put in the time to do the work. It is mostly simple annotations on videos and articles. However these assignments are very one sided, and obviously just support his political beliefs. All of his lecture are just him trying to impose his opinions on his students. Most of the time we do not even learn sociology
He's a really good lecturer and the material is very interesting. I always looked forward to coming to class. BUT there is way too much homework for the difficulty of the class. He uses "alternative grading methods" where you have all hw and no exams and it is very difficult to get an A. Hw isn't that hard but the majority of people will get a B.
The class is not hard, but its a terrible terrible amount of work. You will most likely get a B no matter how good you actually do on your assignments, because his class is graded 100% through a computer system. Do not even think of getting behind, it will screw you for the rest of the year. Would not take again.
The syllabus is nothing compared to the professor. The syllabus shows one thing whereas prof expects FAR more than what is stated. This is a self-eval class, but your assignments get graded and the grading system is agonizing. I was so interested in this class, but the prof quite literally makes it much worse. I learned, but wouldn't do it again.
This was my favorite class all year. I loved the professor and the topics were really interesting. There is a decent amount of homework so if you want a class with little work this isn't it. But the content really makes you think and is enjoyable. There is a paper due every other week and they are graded by students. Make sure to try on the papers.
He gave great, entertaining lectures that genuinely made me think deeply. There were about 2 hours of online media work every week and a paper due every two weeks. It's difficult to get concrete feedback or understand why you got a certain grade.
Hernandez is a solid choice for SOCI205. He reworked his syllabus so his class is more "learning-focused". There 8 papers through the year, and a class interaction online textbook where you earn points. Class is easy, but hes an amazing professor. Knows what hes talking about and actively answers questions. Would take again.
No tests in this class, but lots of busywork; not an easy A. Also lots of peer review--like, peer review was half of my final grade. Grading criteria was unclear and he didn't teach us how to grade, just threw us in. Prof is passionate but very slick and one-sided, will only present his side of issues and such. Don't recommend.
Prof. Hernandez is not a tough professor. I went to class 3 times and still made a B+. However, no one wants to be around him because he will push his views onto you. If you don't agree with him, you're wrong. His behavior when it came to politics, or any beliefs he had that others didn't agree with, was childish. Easy class, proselytizing prof.
He was very straightforward with us and if we had anything to say or any questions he would talk to us. He was a great teacher. I learned so many things from him. NO EXAMS so that was great. We constantly had something to do, but we didn't have to show up for class even though it was fun to show up. We had homework due like 3 times a week not bad:)
At the beginning of the year I had maybe 140 students in my class & by the end of the semester the number was in the teens. If your religious & political don't line up with his, it's a really hard to be around him. He constantly pushes his beliefs on you and will not listen to anything you say. He will shut you down no matter what you say.
Literally take anyone else. The amount of homework is insane and genuinely gave me breakdowns. No tests, but 6 papers, none of which he actually grades (it's peer reviewed through Peerceptive). I made the A, but it wasn't worth it. I hardly learned anything new and this barely even qualified as a sociology class.
Professor Hernandez is very smart, but also very condescending. As others have said, he absolutely will push his views onto his students and shut them down when they voice opinions that differ from his. He is pretty unprofessional and it was really uncomfortable being in his class.... It's a shame too because the material is interesting.
the homework is pretty time consuming, there are about 3-5 articles/videos you need to read and comment on before each class. your grade depends on how other students interact with your comments so you have to do them early to get a good grade. the papers are pretty difficult. but no exams and the material is really interesting
He really cares about what he's teaching and genuinely wants to hear students' opinions. He can come off as arrogant, but he still facilitates opposing points of view in his lectures. We had 6 papers, weekly annotation assignments, weekly attendance grades, and >5 opportunities for extra credit.
I LOVE Professor Hernandez's classes. He teaches with passion and tries to get eeryone to actually learn and be informed and participate. His work is not hard at all, the papers can be finished in a few hours if you're bad at writing and 1 to 2 if you're good at it. Great Prof.
Course content was very interesting. Lectures definitely lean liberal. Attendance taken weekly, but all lectures are uploaded. Total of 6 papers and probably an hours worth of videos/articles to view and annotate before each class. A is achievable. Extra credit offered, but it is usually for you to attend an event and write over it.
If you stay on top of your work it is very easy to get an A. He provides much factual evidence for everything he talks about in lectures, so if your political views don't always coincide with factual evidence and you are unable to open your mind to listen and learn about research and science-backed facts then maybe don't take his class.
NO tests or quizzes. 6 papers and media you have to annotate before class, not hard at all. Take notes during lecture. He doesn't post slides, and you need the lecture info for papers. He leans liberally, but EVERYTHING he says is backed by factual evidence. I liked his class a lot.
This class is pretty easy to get an A, but the homework amount is insane. Due three times a week, with 3-4 videos/articles to annotate per assignment. No exams, but 6 papers which aren't too difficult. Attendance is 30% of the grade so DO NOT skip. He's a nice guy but a little arrogant, and VERY left leaning, coming from a left leaning person.
The hardest thing about this professor is being able to sit through his lectures. Class is very easy to get an A in if you are decent at writing an essay. Course media is time consuming but if you rephrase the other comments you get full credit. This man thinks socialism in the answer to everything. He tells you who to vote for, so be prepared.
Dr. Hernandez does not have exams, but there is an incredible amount of homework to do. Perusalls are due 3 times a week every week, and papers are a big art of your grade. Papers overlap with the Perusalls, meaning you often have work for this class every day of the week. If you are just taking it for the credit, this class is not worth it.
Dr. Hernandez's lectures were very intresting and really made me think. Each theory or idea prented was backed up with many resources and facts. The class did not have tests but did have homework assignments and essays that are doable after reviewing the rubric on peerceptiv and notes.
I loved Dr. Hernandez's lectures, and I really learned a lot about our society from different perspectives. The workload was not too bad but sometimes annoying when have harder classes to worry about. I think some material discussed was biased but everything was backed by factual evidence. This is an easy A class if you put in the work.
Interesting topics, but a dreadful professor. Dr. Hernandez puts a lot of effort into his lectures but gives an awful load of outside work. His class took up most of my time beyond my major courses. Interesting class, but the most unnecessary professor I've ever taken. His personal/political beliefs greatly influence his material. Take someone else
I loved his lectures, you go over a lot of interesting stuff and don't have to worry about class participation. There is a lot of homework, but as long as you keep up with it most of the time you should pass. No tests, just essays over interesting topics. Reasonable guy, the only challenge is keeping up with hw.
Lots of time-consuming homework between classes. No tests or quizzes. Graded on essays (1 about every 2 weeks), attendance, and homework. Need good lecture notes and to do homework for essays. Very biased in lectures and not always open to ideas. Would not recommend taking him unless you won't get frustrated with controversial topics in class.
There are quite a few assignments for Dr. Hernandez, but they're fairly easy and fast. He gets hate for being opinionated, but I just respected his opinion and kept my own. If this is too much for you, don't take the class, but I thought it was an easy A. Homework every week, a few papers, no exams. Remember to be respectful but ask questions!
Love this professor, he is a great teacher and invested in the subject matter and students. There is an essay due every 2 weeks, which is impossible to get an A on based on how the grading works. So much Perusall for every class period. You get 2 freebies for missed class but other than that you NEED to go and take notes to use in the essays.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very biased in his lectures and grades HARD. Attendance is 30% of your grade. Doesn't allow technology. Around 8 HW assignment each week with an essay due every other week.
I took Prof Hernandez for two semesters. I thought I was more left leaning but he is EXTREMELY left leaning. Grades are VERY inconsistent for essays (that are due every other week) as they are all graded by a computer. 3-4 videos/articles to read 3 times a week-most work I had for any of my classes. Takes attendance daily for a grade.
Attendance is mandatory & no technology, you have to take notes by hand. Lectures are very hard to sit through especially if you already have base knowledge about sociology, you won't learn anything new. Lots of homework for a soci class, graded by a computer. Essays are extremely inconsistent as they're peer-graded by different people every time.
There are no exams, but there is a lot of reading and essays. Also, attendance is mandatory and comprises 30% of your overall grade. Personally, I enjoyed this class - the professor was passionate and backed up his statements with facts. My only complaint is that essays are peer-graded which is a bit frustrating, but you can request a re-grade.
6-8 reading assignments/videos PER WEEK, 4 annotations each. 6 essays(lowest dropped) interview 2 people and write about it as well. Essay topics easy but tedious, need 4 citations from lecture and 4 from the reading. Attendance mandatory but you had to go anyways to get citations for your essay. Absolutely no reason for an elective to be so much.
He is passionate and fun to learn from. Homework can take 1-2 hours (3x a week). The essays are extremely tedious and time-consuming, but not too difficult. Most of the poor ratings are from students with differing political opinions than him. He is a more left-leaning, but shows sources for his data and clearly explains his line of reasoning.
Hernandez is very passionate, even to the point of yelling (for emphasis I guess) at us in his class. He has little to no boundaries concerning language and if/when he calls students out in front of the whole class. While he is very approachable, you never know how he'll respond.
Contrary to other reviews I've read on him, I actually really liked Professor Hernandez. Most of the reviews on here come from people who have differing political opinions. I myself am not on the left and I still enjoyed his class and did not find it too difficult. There is a lot of work but it's all pretty easy. GO TO CLASS! ATTENDANCE MATTERS!!!
Professor Hernandez is a fantastic lecturer! While he is very liberal and opinionated, he is also respectful of different points of view. The class consists of 2-3 homework assignments before every class, and an essay is due every two weeks. Attendance is mandatory, but you get three skips. If you just put in the work, it is easy to get an A!
Dr. Hernandez is one of the best lecturers I've seen. You can tell he puts in a lot of work to make sure the info he gives is concise and easy to comprehend. There is a lot of work for this class, but it's very interesting, and if you do the work, the essays take less time to write. Dr. Hernandez is very passionate and a very talented educator!
Dr. Hernandez is a really, really good lecturer, full stop. He encourages students to be themselves and to be flexible, which is why he gives us 6 loose essay/video projects instead of exams, with the lowest one being dropped. You WILL talk about race, gender, and sexuality, which could be new to you. Have an open mind and you'll be fine. Take him.
Dr. Hernandez gives a lot of coursework, but it's all manageable. Engaging lectures and no exams.
I loved Dr. Hernandez's class! His lectures were always engaging, and it was easy to pay attention. You learn interesting, almost necessary, lessons about race, gender, class, ethnicity, etc.. I would encourage anybody to take him if you can. There are a lot of assignments, but if you put in the work, it is easy to do well in his class.
Professor Hernandez was excellent. It's clear he puts a lot of thought into the lectures, and always presents his claims backed up with numbers and goes through and explains them. Homework is pretty heavy, you will be watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of articles, felt like an easy A.
He's a great teacher in terms of lectures as they're interesting but I feel that he gives out too much homework for a 3-credit hour class. He gives out assignments due every other day and gives out essays due every other week, where you also have to review other people's assignments. Its a lot of work but if you put in the time, an A is inevitable.
Professor Hernandez's class, though academically undemanding, suffered from his self-centered teaching style. Lectures turned into ego-boosting monologues, and a disrespectful tone discouraged questions. While the content was easy, the lack of a positive learning environment overshadowed the course's potential. (Would not recommend.)
Dr. Hernandez is very liberal so some of the lectures are brutal to sit through. Take notes or have a friend who does because they're needed for your papers. A lot of HW due three times of week, not hard just time consuming. Do what you need to o an you'll get an A.
Dr. Hernandez gave out homework every other day that had to be completed before class even if we never talked out it. There were essays due every other week. He taught everything from his perspective and wouldn't save time during lectures for questions. The only way you could reach him was through a google form which his TAs would respond to.
No exams, you have 6 essays throughout the sem, and the lowest one is dropped. Prof Hernandez is hilarious, he brings up good giggles that make the lectures interesting. He is a left person, but I have no problem with his lectures as a middle guy. LOTS of homework, avg 6-9 article analyses per week. COME TO CLASS, it's a huge amount of your grade.
The content that Dr. Hernandez teaches is beyond biased and he relies on clearly made up arguments with "previous students" to back his flawed opinions. If you contest anything he says, he will become combative and will avoid calling on you again. You are only given explicitly left-wing sources (Mother Jones, Vox, etc.) for your essays. Good luck!
Dr. Hernandez is an amazing lecturer, but he purposely pokes holes in people's arguments and never concedes a strong argument. Everything is graded by peers (who don't read your work and give out B's) or a computer program. Questions are submitted to a TA, which led me to wonder what he did because it wasn't grading or answering questions.
I absolutely loved Dr. Hernandez as a professor. There are A LOT of assignments and papers though. He is very helpful and I love his lectures. There are no quizzes or exams, only online assignments and papers. Lots of reading and writing but easy if you pay attention in class.
Dr. Hernandez's class was amazing! class is graded exclusively by attendance quizzes and the 6 essays you'll be assigned. 1.5k words each, graded by peers, I never got lower than a 91 on any of them (however, im a strong writer). THERE ARE NO EXAMS, not even a final. Just attend class and read the pre-class media so you can pass the attendance quiz
Prof Hernandez was one of my favorites. I also took him for Social Problems. There's a lot of homework but it's not too hard to do and the criteria is pretty clear. He was personable, engaging, and takes time to remember everyone's names. I struggle attending early classes but had no problem going to his because I always looked forward to it!
I could barely count this as a sociology class as we spent little to no time on the actual foundations of sociology, different sociological theories, sociologists, or anything pertaining to the study of people in groups. Dr. Hernandez uses this class to get on top of his soap box about social issues and never get down to truly teach unbiasedly.
Dr. Hernandez was a really great professor lecture wise. We had course media we had to do which consisted of articles or videos before every class because we had a quiz every day. One time we had a literal 512 page article to read as well as 2 other things, just for a 5 question quiz. The essays are pretty easy and are graded easy though.
Half of the grades are five question quizzes during every class (based on readings or videos he assigns) and the other half is based on writing assignments graded by other students. Lectures are pretty interesting, though he expects you to stay for the entire lecture. Just try to do well on the quizzes as they are pretty signifcant to your grade.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! The grading system is BAD it's 50% attendance quizzes based off long articles/videos, then 50% on essays your peers grade. He will call you out for leaving the class early and will Aggie honor code you for taking the quiz outside of class. In his words "he could care less about the grade you get".
I feel like this was a very rewarding course. However, be warned it's time consuming. Attendance quizzes were 50% of grade and included some very specific questions. Also, whoever said we had to read 500 pages once was mistaken- it was actually like 20 pages. The assigned articles+videos are usually short or medium length. Lectures were engaging
He teaches strictly from his perspective, making statements that leave you frustrated, leaving no room for discussion or altering viewpoints. I would spend 2 hours reading for a 5 question quiz and still get a 2/5, maybe a 3/5 on a good day. These quiz grades add up to 50% of your grade and do not accurately represent knowledge of the course.
Dr. Hernandez's class has a heavy workload, but his engaging lectures and helpful feedback make it worthwhile. Unstuckstudy was a game-changer for staying on top of the readings and assignments.
Dr. Hernandez is so funny and loves teaching!! 50% of your grade is 5 questions, 5-minute quizzes in every class, and the other 50% are CREs (projects). YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS TO SUCCESED!! Make sure you stay on top of the quizzes, that's the only reason I got a B.
Half your grade is daily quizzes, which you shouldn't underestimate. Six essays throughout the semester, all are peer graded (which can be good or bad ig). Lectures are pretty much him forcing his political opinions on students without making room for discussion. Too much work for a side class, don't take him, he'll ruin your 4.0 gpa.
AWESOME prof, very engaging and fun lectures! HARD CLASS. barely got an A and worked so hard. LOTS of homework each day- read articles/watch TedTalks/podcasts (20min-1.5hrs of content), take a 3-5 min 5 question quiz in class over random info from hw. Hard to know what quizzes will cover- 50% of your grade; other 50% is peer viewed 1000word essays.
Does not approve dr's notes/ will give you a 0 for the day even with one. Beyond biased, liberal lectures were nearly impossible to sit through. Assignments geared towards people who believe what he does and if you don't you WILL struggle. Bragged about telling disabled students to petition the uni for him over a social issue. Do not take.
Such an easy class. No exams, but lots of required reading for in class attendance quizzes. He's funny, but seems like he just goes on rants about whatever he is passionate about and likes to talk to students. Also something like 5 essays every 2 weeks that require decent time and effort, but these are mostly peer graded so don't worry too much!
I enjoy his lectures, that is why I took him for a second time despite getting a B (89) in his class last semester. Needless to say, the exact same thing is happening again due to how he has 50% of your grade as CRE's and 50% being quizzes. All CRE's grades are peer graded, meaning, you're either unlucky or lucky with who gets your CRE to grade.
I wouldn't take this professor in a million years. If I could go back and do it again, I would ensure I completely avoided his class. If you want to take this elective class, like I did, DO NOT. The workload is way too much for an elective and unnecessary. If you value your time and GPA, which he does not, don't take HIM! Save yourself and just NO!
50% of your grade is Essays and interviews that in theory should be easy but are graded hard. The other 50% is attendance quizzes based off of videos and articles you have to read before each class. These are also lowkey hard. Not to mention his lectures are very clearly pushing a liberal agenda and a "woke" vibe. He doesn't even try to hide it.
Dr Hernandez is awesome! His lectures are really interesting, and he's hilarious! He talks a lot about how we can take power in our world instead of waiting. Definitely one of the best professors I've had os far
I didn't expect to like this class but I did. He is intense. He talked about a lot of things that I had never even heard of (Walgreens blew up as a store because of prohibition!) and some stuff I don't think I wanted to ever know about (lynching postcards). Not an easy class but worth it.
I have never worked harder for a good grade! I think it was worth it though. I learned a lot and made a couple new friends.
I should have showed up more. My favorite lecture was about social engineering. He actually gave us tips on how to do it (and prevent it). There are quizzes every lecture on the readings but he lets you look at them and talk to the people around you while you take it.
This was the second class I took with Dr. Hernandez. Unfortunately, I can't take his Death class in the fall because of work but I would DEFINITELY take it. There's no mandatory attendance and you can miss a few classes with no excuse (which helped me because of work). He gives lots of extra credit chances too so jump on those when he offers them.
I don't know if I should have taken a social problems class right now but I did. You'll learn a lot of stuff (almost too much). Professor Hernandez REALLY cares about this stuff. I played this game where I tried to figure out which topic he really cared about, and I think the answer is everything. Go to class. Do the readings and you'll be fine
The best class that I've ever taken. When you sign-up you think that it can't all be about death, but it is. The discussions were actually fun. There's lots of reading but you actually want to read the stuff because it really helps you figure out what you want to do. The hardest part was talking to my friends and family about death but worth it.
I had a lot of drama this semester with family stuff but he worked with me to get things done. He saw me cry a lot.
I took two of his classes this semester at the same time. It was so much reading. I had to just skip some for the quizzes. The good thing is that he drops 3 quizzes and lets you take a bunch of extra credit quizzes. Plus, you can take the quizzes with other students which helps. Just make sure that you go to class
Wow! I'm shocked to see so many trolls trashing Dr. Hernandez. TAMU is really conservative and he really isn't but I guess some people can't take someone not stroking their ego. His class was awesome. He brings a lot of energy and knows a lot about a lot. Do the readings and sit with a good group of people and you'll do great on the quizzes.
There are quizzes every lecture but you can use anything you want including the internet and talking to other people. His lectures are entertaining and he really cares.
I love video games and we got to talk about video games for a full week (without it coming off as snarky or a waste of time) and one of the assignments was to literally just play different kinds of video games. Great lectures. Great professor. I loved this class!
Dr. Hernandez is the single best teacher I've had at TAMU. I didn't miss a class all semester (you shouldn't either because of the daily quizzes) and learned so much. I annoyed the heck out of my friends because of stuff I learned in this class.
Graduating senior here: Take this class! I had a serious senioritis and was totally burnt from my major work so I took this class as an elective. It was worth it. Dr. Hernandez is entertaining and you get to talk a lot of crazy stuff (like what your first body modification will be or how you'll feel about your kid dating a robot). I needed it
I thought I wasn't going to get a good grade in this class because I only got 5s on my quizzes about once a week but I did all the extra credit (there's lots!) and went to class and it worked out. He is really entertaining and you get to talk about crazy stuff. My friends are sick of hearing me talk about this class but I recommend it to anyone.
I officially switched from a BIMS major to a sociology major because of Dr. Hernandez. I still want to go into medicine but I just think more like a sociologist (and my chemistry grades are...). This was the second class I took with Dr. Hernandez (also Intro). Loved them both. Go to class. Do the readings and sit with some smart people. That's it!
You actually have you to show up to class if you want to do well. I got used to not showing up when I focused on other classes. DON'T TRY TO TAKE THE QUIZZES IF YOU AREN'T IN CLASS. He won't always catch you but when he does he'll report you to the Honor's council. Ask me how I know. The class is fun though. Cool stuff to talk about.
So much salt on these boards. Yeah, if you're a diehard support of Musk or 47 then you probably won't like this class. Why? Because Dr. Hernandez doesn't spend the whole class doming them. Capitalism does exploit people! Lots of people are hurt by the rich! How is this controversial?!? If you're a normal person, who wants to learn, take this class!
I really needed this class. It wasn't always easy to go (you spend a full week talking about unaliving yourself) but I learned a lot. Make sure to go chat with Dr. Hernandez after class. I think that I learned almost as much after class as during. He actually listens to you and he cares more about you than your grade. Take this class.
Go to class. Sit with good people. You'll be fine. He makes things fun
If you take this class, be prepared to talk a lot about some fun and weird stuff. My favorite discussions though were when he talked about his kid and he asked us for advice/perspective. It felt like we were all part of something real. If you come to class and do the readings then this is a great class with a great teacher.
I was actually a counselor for his kid! It totally makes sense now that I've taken a class with Dr. Hernandez. I highly recommend the class. He's a great lecturer and he always comes up with current stuff to talk about. Some of the things we discussed had happened the same week and we actually got to discuss them for real. I definitely recommend!
Great professor and lectures but he was too much for me too early. Too much energy at 9 am! I'm going to try and take him again but later in the day.
Voters, citizens, and taxpayers. Voters, citizens, and taxpayers. Voters, citizens, and taxpayers. Voters, citizens, and taxpayers. Voters, citizens, and taxpayers. Voters, citizens, and taxpayers.
Great Professor! Didn't go to many lectures, which hurt my grade, but he explains concepts well and encourages you to question your beliefs. Would take his class again without hesitation
I learned a lot from this class but the biggest thing is that I changed all my passwords and got my family to change theirs too. Get yourself a password manager! Choose security over convenience! It's a pain at first but it's worth it. Great class. Do the readings and try all the extra credit. It's a fun class with cool things to talk about.
Dr. Hernandez is a great professor. It's like watching a TED talk every class. There's readings/videos for every class and a quiz for attendance. It's only like 5 questions and they're multiple choice. I had to guess a few times and did well. Sit next to some smart people and they can help you during the quizzes. And do the extra credit!
Great professor. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed in the classroom and in the world. It felt weird the first time he said that there's genius in the room, but he really does believe it. The class is VERY lecture heavy but you do get to do discussions every class. Just do the readings and come to class and you'll be fine.
I had never heard of sociology before taking this class (needed it for gen ed). I loved it! I'm seriously thinking about making sociology a minor. Professor Hernandez loves what he does and loves talking about sociology. It can't be easy talking about stuff like racism and sexism all the time but he does it and often with a smile. Great class!
There are short quizzes every class which is kind of annoying but he offers a ton of extra credit that can bring your overall grade up by 3 points. He lets you use your notes and talk to the people around you for the quizzes, so that helps. I really liked listening to the lectures. He clearly puts in a lot of work to make them.
EXTRA CREDIT MIRACLE!!! He gives lots of extra credit chances (like 10) but I kept missing them. Out of nowhere, he gave us one more chance to get an extra credit point and I did it! It moved my grade up! Thanks Dr. Hernandez!!!
Dr. Hernandez is a great lecturer! It's fun seeing him get all amped up (especially when he's talking about Musk!!!). He knows his stuff and doesn't want us to get taken advantage of. Do the readings (lots of videos and news articles), sit with smart people, and go to class and you'll be fine.
I never thought I'd get an "A" but I did! Do ALL the extra credits. He gave us like 10 of them. They are SUPER POWERFUL! I didn't love Peerceptiv (some people are just hateful) but the grading was pretty easy. Go to class! I think that the people that do the worst are the ones that never show up. The class is really fun and you talk about fun stuff
I messed up early on because I was adjusting to college and stuff and just didn't show up. I missed a BUNCH of quizzes. I talked to Dr. Hernandez and he told me about the extra credit quizzes. I did them all and got the max points. They made up for like 5 missed quizzes. Show up to class and you'll figure out the rest. He's a good teacher
He's the best professor I've had in 4 years at TAMU. This class is tough because you talk about all the different parts of death. It was really tough talking about euthanasia and what choices you would make. He really cares about his students and doesn't shy away from the rough parts. He's also really great with questions so ask a bunch.
Dr. Hernandez is an amazing teacher. I really didn't like him at first (I'm not used to teachers cursing) but I got over that and stuck with the class. It turns out that I had normalized a lot of misogyny in my family. I recommend that if you don't like things at first, you go talk to him. He's really nice and will work with you.
Great professor and great lectures. It took me a bit to figure out the quizzes and stuff but once you learn what you can use (all your notes, the course media, and you can talk to other people) then I had no real issues. Just make sure that you actually go to class!
This is the best class that I took in college. Not only do you feel like everything you're talking about is important, but you know that the work you produce is actually going to impact your life. You make a livinig will, you plan for your body disposal, and you talk about it with your friends and family. I cried a bit, but this was a great class.
He started the class by telling us that he is prepared to die for us. Yeah, I've never had a professor say that before. Great guy and great class.
Dr. Hernandez is the absolute best! He's so into sociology and the world, and he really wants us to get out there and make a difference. He pushed us to question all the stuff our family, friends, and the media tell us. Try and be strategic about when you miss class and you'll do good. Best prof I've ever had!
Professor Hernandez is the best! His classes are super entertaining, and he really cares about his students. While attendance isn't mandatory, you'll want to be there (and make sure that you stay the whole time!). The course media are easy to complete, like TED Talks and Crash Course videos. Highly recommend this class!
I loved this class. I have taken a lot of classes at TAMU but this is the first one that felt like it really mattered. Dr. Hernandez has you talk about real stuff and challenges you to have a real plan when it comes to your death. He tells you why it's important and how to make it happen. Everyone should take this class
This was the most fun class that I've taken in college so far. Every class there was a weird topic to discuss. Be prepared to speak up if called on. He actually wants to know what you think about all sorts of things. Don't worry if you are nervous about speaking in public though. He won't try to rush you. He'll let you get out your thoughts.
I definitely didn't agree with everything he had to say, but I'm glad I took the class. I doubt that I'll take another social science class again as an engineering major, but I would take another one with Dr. Hernandez. His lectures were entertaining, and he gave you plenty of chances both in class and out to fix any bad grades.
I LOVED this class!!! This is the third class I've taken with Dr. Hernandez and the best one. He's a great lecturer but this class just felt really important. He pushes you to think about what you want when you die and shows you lots of different options that you've probably never even thought of. Best class at TAMU!
Dr. Hernandez is the best teacher that I've ever had! I think about the stuff he tells us all the time and my friends are SICK of hearing me tell them things I learned. I took the plunge and became a sociology minor because of him and I'm excited to take more of his classes in the future!
Do the readings and show up to class and you should be okay. You have 5 essays that are also graded but they aren't too bad. Plus, if you don't like your grade, you can just request a regrade.
You basically just need to show up to class and take notes. He lets you use the readings and your notes while you take the quizzes. While you can also talk to other people, I basically never did because I just looked things up myself. He's a good teacher and entertaining.
This is the best class that I've ever taken. You actually want to do the readings and go to class. This class actually feels like it matters because it really does. I'm a nursing major but I recommend it to all my friends no matter their major. If you show up and do the readings (which are easy), then you'll get a good grade.
This was a fun class for my last semester at TAMU. My biggest problem was senioritis but I showed up to most classes because the lectures are fun. I didn't always do the readings, but the quizzes aren't too hard and you can talk to the people around you. Try and do all the extra credits. He gives you like 10 of them. I got 3 points which helped
Just finished my first year and this was the best class I took. Dr. Hernandez is a great teacher and really cares a lot. He comes into every class with a ton of passion and energy. I made the mistake of sitting towards the back at the start and the people there didn't care about the class. They didn't help with any of the quizzes. Sit in front!!!
I'm SOOO glad that I stuck with this class. I thought that it was going to be too much for me, but it turned out to be the best class I've ever taken. It turns out there is a lot of stuff that I believed about death that I never really knew, but because we go so into the details about all of it, I got to figure it out, and I feel so much better
Fun class. Definitely recommend. I really liked Dr. Hernandez.
I really needed this class. There's so much terrible stuff happening in the world, so why take a Social Problems class? I didn't know where I wanted to focus my attention: immigration, systemic racism, police brutality... This class let me learn more about each of these things. Dr. Hernandez was so funny and intense about it all. Great class!!!
Good class. The hardest part is just coming to class every day. The quizzes aren't hard but they can be tricky if you didn't read. I got some perfect scores just guessing though. Sit with 1 or 2 people that can help you.
Dr. Hernandez is the best. I had to miss a bunch of classes because of family stuff. I talked with Dr. Hernandez and not only did he help me get my work fixed up but he actually listened and checked in on me. He even sent me a message after the semester ended to check up again. I wish I could take the class again with no drama
Great professor. Relatively low-stress class. He doesn't pull any punches and trusts that you care more about learning the truth rather than just hear political talking points. I went to his office hours a few times and just chatted with him about stuff and he really listened. I recommend the class even at 9 am
Second class I've taken with Dr. Hernandez (with Intro). I definitely didn't feel like talking about Social Problems every class but he asks weird questions that get you talking. I did better the second semester because I actually showed up to class and did the readings. The class is pretty easy once you figure that out.
Best and weirdest class that I've ever taken. I loved that the stuff he talked about was really recent. I spent a lot of time telling my friends stuff I had learned in class that they didn't even know about. Felt cool. He's a fun professor and really cares about tech. I recommend that you go chat with him. The class gets better when he knows you.
Good class
DR HERNANDEZ IS THE GOAT!!! Best professor at TAMU! I tell everyone to take him. I even brought my dad to class and he called on him. I found that the class is A LOT better if you don't try and hide out in the back. He's going to call on you anyway so you might as well sit up front! TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
Great class. He really cares about his students and really everything. The guy is really passionate. I know taht not everyone likes that but he does. I felt intimidated sometimes because I didn't know about something that was happening in the news but I like that he tried really hard to keep us informed.
I was really close to Q dropping this class, but I'm glad I didn't. Hernandez is a really great professor, but he expects you to try. He tells you on the first day that his pet peeve is people who don't try but still want an A. Yeah, that's not going to happen. The quizzes and essays weren't too hard and he drops your lowest ones. Good class
Good class. It took me a few weeks to figure things out but once you do the class is pretty easy. Don't let yourself drop too many quizzes early though. Make sure that you at least try to get the extra credit points. They are REALLY valuable. He's a really good teacher. The best one I had all semester
Good class but not what I expected. I thought the class was going to be more technical (like problem sets and equations) but it was a lot of reading and discussion. Fortunately, it was really interesting. He works really hard to bring in fun stuff for us to discuss. You spend more than half the time talking in a group or with others.
He's a great teacher and very passionate about sociology and the world! You take a quiz every single class but nothing is too hard if you've just watched the video or read. His class is overall pretty easy except that you actually have to show up every day. This was a really great experience because of him
I'm really glad this was my first class. Dr. Hernandez works really hard to explain stuff that no one tells most freshman like you SHOULD go to office hours (instead of avoiding them). I strongly recommend that you go to class every day and find some other people that you can rely on if you miss. It really helps your grade. Do the extra credit too!
This class helps you see the future. My family just had a run in with ICE this weekend and I knew what to do because this class focused on the problems but also how to deal with those problems. He really cares a lot about empowering us to actually live good lives. Great class!~
I made of the mistake of waiting too long to go see the TA for office hours. They were really helpful (thanks Charlotte!). I didn't go until the 8th week of class when I should have gone WAY earlier. The quizzes aren't that hard if you just try a little. I also could have done a lot better on the CREs if I went to office hours earlier. Good class
There's no one like him. I think everyone should take a class with him because he's so passionate about teaching. The one thing that I wish were different was his tech policy: he doesn't let you use a laptop unless it lays flat. I didn't have one. I couldn't really read my own notes. That's on me but I think it would have helped me to use a laptop
Prof Hernandez is amazing! All you have to do is go to 90% of the classes, take notes, and do some extra credit (they are just based on the lectures) and an A is pretty easy to get. There was no final so I got the whole last week to just focus on my other classes. He really cares about his students and is the best prof I've had so far!
This was one of the last classes I took at TAMU and I loved it! This class was really fun. I didn't take any notes and just listened to the lectures. If you do the course media and pay attention then the class is really easy. You should really try and get a core group of people too. I had to study for 2 exams on one day and they really helped
I LOVE DR HERNANDEZ! I plan to take all his classes at TAMU. He's that good! His was the only class that I didn't dread going to. He really really really wants you to succeed and the lectures are really interesting. You can tell how much he loves teaching
INTRODUCE YOURSELF!!! The class became so much better for me when I stopped trying to hide in the back. He really cares about his students and will work with you if you need help. It sounds so dumb but if you try this will be the best class you ever take
I would have loved this class more later in the day. The lectures were really great, but I have two jobs and a full course load, so I slept through a lot of classes. I would have gotten an A if I just stayed awake.
He will probably be one of my favorite college professors ever. His class was hard (lots of readings some weeks) but it was worth it. I loved learning about things that seemed obvious until he made us dig deeper. I'm seriously thinking of becoming a sociology minor.
I am not the some person today that I was when I started this class. The class made me look at a lot of things differently (like capital punishment) and I'm happy it did. Some of the things that he said REALLY bothered me not because they were wrong or mean (he's really intense but kind) but because I didn't want them to be true. Great class
I'm really glad I took this as my first class because he really helps you figure out important stuff like time management and how to communicate with your professor when you need help. I transferred in from Blinn and never really knew that stuff but it came in handy with my other classes too. He's a great professor (a lot better than I've had)
The best professor ever! A group of us were having a tough time during midterms and he heard us talking about how little sleep we were getting studying for exams. He starts lecture like normal and then after like 10 minutes he says that class in over and that he hopes that we use the time to take a nap or get some rest in. The best.
Amazing teacher. He really wants you to learn and grow as a person. He's all about connecting the lessons of the class to choices that we have to make every day as "voters, citizens, and taxpayers". I have spent so much time talking about this class with my friends and family and recommend it to everyone!
Great class! I love that he actually treats us like adults. This was my first class freshman year and it felt so different from high school. He taught about real stuff and he kept saying over and over that we can't wait to think about this stuff. I really needed to hear that.
Had fun. I knew a lot of the stuff he was talking about. It was funny to see some of the reactions that the other people had. They were shocked about the stuff going on in the world. I guess they just hang out on social media all day...
I was at work today and the subject of AI and work came up. I felt so confident to talk about the nuances because of this class. He spends about 3 weeks looking at AI from all different sides and we get into a lot of discussion so doing it with my boss and coworkers felt normal. He really does prepare you for the real world. Take this class!!!
He's the best professor that I've ever had. My friend told me to take this class, so I did. I thought he was funny and intense but then when we started talking about the really deep stuff, he cared so much about listening to us and helping us. This is not a class for everyone and I would have hated it as a freshman but it was amazing.
So much of the stuff I'm seeing on TikTok and Instagram right now we talked about over the semester. The stuff about immigration. The stuff about propaganda. The stuff about crime. I'm so glad that I took this class. He really focuses on preparing you for the hard reality of the world. That makes it a tough class sometimes but really good
I had a bad start to the semester but the class lets you drop a good amount of quizzes and one essay grade. I made sure to do all the extra credit and got the 3 maximum points, which helped a lot. Just go talk to him. I just talked a lot to him and Nikki and it wasn't so bad. I learned a lot too.
This class saved my life. I was in a really dark place and still thought it was a good idea to take a class about death. Well, we did talk about death every single class. You do lots of talking with other people in class and as a group. You write about your death. You write about your parent's death. Death. Death. Death. I needed it.
I just met with him and he wrote me a great recommendation letter. I was really nervous to ask because I didn't get an A in the class but he tells you that that doesn't matter and it didn't. We talk a lot about what I wanted to do next and he was really helpful. It's the summer and he was happy to meet with me to help. That's a great teacher.
I just finished my third sociology class and he's been the best teacher so far. You have to do lots of reading and show up to class but he makes it worth it. You won't ever get bored. Make sure that you know some other people in the class because you will need them at some point for the quizzes and stuff.
Easy class. I never took notes and just paid attention and I got an A.
This class was so much fun! You can tell that he really loves talking about tech because he doesn't just talk about the surface level stuff but the weird and uncomfortable stuff too. I loved chatting with my group about the weird questions he'd ask us. This is the second class I've had with him and I'm doing it again this fall!
Lectures were funny and interesting. I definitely learned a lot about stuff that I thought I already knew. Attendance isn't really mandatory but he does a quiz every class that is basically attendance. He drops 3 of them so you can miss a full week of class. The papers were easy. Just answer the prompts and chat with a friend and you're good.
I didn't take the class that seriously at first because I just liked listening to his lecture and chatting with my friends. Turns out that you actually need to take some notes! I was at a D for a while but I knocked out the extra credit (he gave like 10 of them) and it pulled me up. I'm going to take the Death class with him this fall. He's great!
Dr Hernandez is an amazing professor. I learned so much from his class that I'm thinking of adding a sociology minor. The trick to doing well in his class is just don't come to class with no information. He lets you use your notes for the quizzes and you can even talk to the people around you. Early on I tried to just guess stuff and I failed.
I am in Dr. Hernandez Socio 205 currently, and as we've only taken one exam, I can't give perfect feedback. I have LOVED his class so far. It's my first semester of college, and I truly love his class. He is so nice, gives great lectures, and is so interesting. I look forward to taking more of his classes!!
Dr. Hernandez is a great teacher, and cares about what he does. However he is a huge liberal, hates white people, and believes that people of color have almost no chance of succeeding in the world. Get ready to be lectured at by him and his love for communism and Karl Marx. "You are not so smart"
This class is unforgettable, in the worst way. He turns lectures into political sermons and mocks anyone who disagrees. It's not a classroom, it's an echo chamber. If you want an education, skip this. If you want indoctrination disguised as academia, congrats, you found it! The grading is arbitrary, participation is performative. A&M needs to fire.
He is way too into this course. Attendance is mandatory and don't event think about faking it, because rumor is that he tracks your IP address. Don't forget to do your bi weekly project, where you get marked off even if you have all of the correct information. All in all, don't take him unless you want a headache.
I'd recommend another professor. Tests are cumulative, no photos of slides, no laptops, and no notes posted on Canvas. Daily quizzes over multiple readings or videos heavily affect your grade, and there are no test reviews. Lots of work with little support.
Do NOT take Dr. Hernandez if you want to maintain your sanity. He teaches topics that are objective and expect you to agree with him because they are on tests. He does not give you any information after lectures so get ready to take good notes because it's all to are going to have to study for the tests. He acts high and mighty and doesn't listen.
Everyone saying he's evil are just weird...Dr. Hernandez is great. I think everyone should take Death and Dying. He is an excellent professor who relates to students and does not judge. Everyone gets a chance to speak if they want to. Take him, don't listen to the haters.
If you show up and take notes, it is super easy. yes he is a little biased but he's fun to listen to. seriously the tests are just knowing the vocab, and the attendance quizzes are relatively easy. overall i really enjoyed him but i put four stars because i can see how some would think he's political.
This was my favorite class this semester. Professor Hernandez is AMAZING. Very kind, interesting lecturer and very helpful. 408 is very writing intensive but that was not a problem for me. The topics were very interesting and fun to listen too. Attendance is not mandatory but go everyday to take notes. I highly recommend taking this course!
Your grade is carried by daily attendance quizzes based on course media you do on your own time and 3 exams. As long as you listen in class(lectures aren't posted) you will pass exams and the final is optional. Very interesting and thought-provoking class overall.
He gave out extra credit that would impact the overall grade, not just points on exams. He knew well of what he was talking about and was able to be real with his students. There are daily attendance quizzes, so do NOT skip class. Exams are a little tricky, so be sure to study just as you would for any other course.
If you're religious this class is hard to sit through. He is kind and willing to work with students, but makes some comments towards religions that can make you uncomfortable. His tests are hard and aren't fully representative of what's learned in class. Overall funny and good lecturer.
Professor Hernandez is an amazing lecturer. Many people don't like him because they claim he's too "biased," but he's just teaching sociology on a conservative campus. His grading is a bit annoying; exams are worth 60% of your grade, and they're cumulative. He does not allow computers in his class. Attendance is mandatory, and you get a quiz daily.
Definitely shows his political and religious views through his teachings. As a woman, he has made me very uncomfortable in some of the things that he has chosen to say about women and the pictures that he has used. Also very demeaning and makes you feel incredibly stupid. I have had three years at A&M and have never had a professor I disliked more.
Where do I even start? He is the most liberal, biased, vulgar, human I've ever seen. Get ready to do DAILY quizzes. He actually hates white men and kinda women unless he is sexualizing them. He basically makes me feel like the biggest idiot ever. Honestly, I pray I never see him again because I am scared he'll ask me if I can "see the water."
He has great lectures but the tests are very concept based rather than memorization so the exams are kind of just based on vibes. The only grades are attendance quizzes and exams plus 3-4 extra credit point quizzes. I missed 3 attendance quizzes and my grade went down 4 points. TAKE GOOD NOTES, he doesn't release the slides or let you take photos.
xtra cr is added to your final grade %. I earned 4/3 pts this semester (not a typo). He means well & class expectations are fair. if u show up, don't take attendance quizzes outside of class (he's not lying when he says he knows when u do), try on the CRE's, & respect his rules u won't have a problem. screens in class have to be flat on desk too
Attendance is mandatory which can suck, but he does offer extra credit. He isn't a bad grader, most missed points will come from not attending class. Very passionate about his lectures, which makes them interesting. He also interacts with the class a lot.
Yaps. A lot. Everything said in class could be put on the exam so go. Not hard at all just pay some attention. He does care if you show up and makes obnoxious daily quizzes on videos or articles you have to read before class. Very nice though and genuinely wants all his students to succeed. Definitely makes himself accessible outside of class.
