not able to answer questions in class, VERY BORING
Like I said in his evaluation, Would not recommend for visual learners.
nice but boring, no class participation, can you read, so can he
nice guy but seems a little uncomfortable teaching&needs better teaching skills
uncomfortable, and doesnt really sell the course. notes are in columns the exact width of his body. no class participation or discussion. HOWEVER, VERY helpful and nice if you ask for extra help, or details on one of his vauge assignments
BORING class, easy though... ALL regurgitation.
very vague and unhelpful.. if you take his class be prepared to teach yourself from the book
If you read his notes, and do the interactive cd u will do awesome in this class. He has good examples.Overall one of my best profs!
Great Prof ! Easy and good notes. Very intresting class.
Should be wearing a lab coat. I think he is afraid of students or people in general. Very boring, very business oriented and definetly has a personality deficit. Interesting course.
How could people think that this guy is boring, It's hard to make a dry course fun. His assignment is the easiest you will ever do and the easiest mark you will ever get
Have to give him credit for trying to make this course interesting despite the fact its dry. Understanding and helpful towards students. Only problem is that he fiddles with the overheads because he's nervous.
great teacher
Alex is a great teacher. He is very articulate and concise in his lectures, does not rush through the material and is very patient. He's like one of those great student teachers we got in high school! Best of all, he marks more on understanding than memor
You might as well just read the text, cause you can find all his lecture material there. Interesting course but boring prof. Absolutely no class participation. However, there's only one assignment and it's easy.
What the hell is with the touching of the overheads every freakin second?!?!?
cool guy
Great instructor. better than other Soc profs. clear notes, very helpful-has a good teaching style, keeps the course interesting.
Boring course but an easy grade if you aced math 116. He played around with the overhead way too much. Easy 3 credits, there is only 2 labs all year and then only 2 50 minute lectures a week, little work...easy grade
Alex is kind of quirky but a pretty cool teacher. As long as you memorize names and vocab terms from the text and his lectures, you will rock his class.
Like how he lectures, straight forward, doesn't try to trick you, approachable, can back up on things. Good class!
Great Prof and doesn't try to trick you!
Can somebody get this guy a yo-yo? He needs something other than his overhead to play with. He never stops moving it, even when it's perfectly in place. Very boring voice, but good teacher. Good class discussions, videos, and easy group assignments.
Boring style of teaching. Easy class to get a good grade in. Take this class for a GPA boost. 2 SIMPLE midterms and 1 EASY final. Heck, there were even BONUS questions on the final and you could decide after your midterms how you wanted your tests weighted...don't know if he still does that anymore
Alex.....talk in something other than a monotone. The material covered was interesting but not b/c of his teaching. He was a fair marker and it IS an easy class. I don't know whether he was just nervous all the time or what, but he didn't really talk to the class that much.
Alex is great for people who care more about grades than about learning. Certainly one can learn in his class, but it'll be largely self-directed, and hard work isn't rewarded. He dishes out marks like penny candy. Completely bland and uninspiring.
Alex is a smart man and a good teacher. Straight forward tests but I am still left wondering why he never taught any parts of the book that talked about women in society?
ipe is the king of crunk
BOOOOOORRRRING!!!!!!!
Alex has a sweet green sweater he wears every day. I would call it his trademark. Lectures are interesting and straightforward and you can go to him after class and he'll discuss anything in more detail. Enjoys perfecting the angle of the overhead. Again and again and again...
He reads out of the text book. He's boring. He asks questions on the tests about things that he mentions in class but don't really have anything to do with Sociology.
boring teacher. drink a lot of cofee before going to his lectures. seems completely uninterested in what he's teaching. uses the textbook for examples in class. incredibly uninspiring.
hes a really good teacher. he makes the best notes on the overhead that you dont even really need to read the text. he's very clear, and even though he speaks in one tone, hes funni, and the cute sweaters that he wears with the collar stickin out if cute. take this class if u need a high GPA or have nothing else to do
wool sweaters + monotone voice = funny teacher! alex will never say hi or bye to the class, he rarely makes jokes that when he does his whole face lights up! his tests show a lot of work put into them, his overhead notes are awesome. bring a large cup of coffee to keep you awake though!
Alex is a unique teacher. During lectures he is quite monotone, and does not really encourage questions. However one on one, he is really quite helpful, kind and engaging; it's quite clear he cares about whether the students understand the material. Some will like him as instructor - some may not. Tests are relatively hard comparitively.
very straightforward and easy to understand teaching style. i really enjoy his classes.
Caffeine...lots of it before this class. Sooo monotone, wears the same outfit every class. DOesn't really get the class to interact. Isn't really THAT specific on what he expects out of assignments. don't take his night class, you'll never show up.
His notes are very in-depth and very clear. That's what I like about him. The exam is on things we've talked about in class and the textbook really isn't necessary. Good prof.
Not a very enthusiastic teacher but he gets the job done. The textbook is not mandatory and his tests are super easy if you write down everything he says in class.
took an introductory sociology class with him. His curriculum was unispiring. I learned nothing new even though I had never taken soc. before. If you're after an easy and unispiring A, take his class. Really though, a waste of time and money. Nice guy though.
If you miss this class you have to get the notes off of someone since that is what his test are bassed on. Dont miss it. It might be painful and your hand might be sore but its worth going. oh ya and drink a lot of coffee.
Ipe Rules! Not much more I can say. I've never had time to by faster in a class. Sure they were only 50 minutes long but it was a fast 50 minutes. Nothing fancy about Alex but he gets the job done.
Best teacher ever, by far! He is a comedian & His notes are crystal clear!
Nothing thrilling about Alex's class, but he gets the job done quickly and painlessly. You'll have an okay time during lecture, pick up some things, and fill your credits. Soc isn't my passion - this was just enough to keep me interested without feeling overloaded!
haha, hes kind of awkward. He knows what hes talking about and is pretty clear. Prepares very well for tests, which are based solely on the notes, so come to class. I enjoyed it, and he let us leave early almost every day.
Most unenthoused teacher. Content is easy, tests are fine, but the setting is killer-coffee needed.
Gets the job done, but could encourage discussions more. Some small group work would be fun.
I have no real problems with the guy, just bring coffee, he has a... soothing voice XD
The tests include the text, but if you don't read the it you should still get an A. He gave a lecture at the start of the term about not giving A+ unless it's "4th year level" which is pretty absurd for a college! When it comes to the essay don't waste too much time on it. All he wants are quotes from the textbook and you'll have an easy A!
horrible teacher. very monotone and tests are random.Notes are helpful but when coming to tests, way to much info and indepth for a 1st year course.. stay away
A very anti-social person, don't expect to get any help or clarification, and drink lots of coffee before this class its a guaranteed sleeper.
The first day of class he told us the class average would be low and he'd have to mark on a curve... Then perhaps it's your teaching! This guy should not be teaching. He's bitter he doesn't teach at a more prestigious university, but perhaps he should develop his public speaking and personal skills before starting another class.
I was in his online sociology class because I thought it would be easy, and it is -in a way. You have only 1 assignment a week and the rest of the marks are tests. However, his marking is ridiculous and his tests are absurd. He's extremely vague about what he wants until he marks you, and if you ask him to specify he blows up and acts like a child.
I did this course online and it went very well. I learned a lot and found it easy to get good grades. I never had to wait long to find out my grades, which was nice
Took this class online. He's very straight forward. Only requirement is being able to follow instructions. Very by the book kind of person, but very fair.
Not a riveting teacher, but gets his points across easily and there are never any surprises on the tests.
Ipe is Awesome! His notes are filled with detail and are easy to understand. If you read your notes and study them, its an easy A. Don't buy the text, his notes cover everything! Bring a laptop to type, as there is a lot to write down. Overall, a great and fantastic prof. Highly recommended! You learn a lot and its entertaining too at times! :D
I really enjoyed Ipe's class. His lectures are completely straight forward, and if you come to class (you HAVE to come to class - his tests are basically solely on his notes) then it is a very easy A. He seems like a really nice guy and I found the material/videos interesting. Good class, good prof! I would deinitely recommend taking his class :)
Great teacher. Take notes, read the textbook and ur good to go)
Ipe is organized and clear about what will be tested. Textbook not needed 99.9% of the time, as his tests are based solely on his notes. Come to class and you will do well. No participation mark, no projects. Recommended for somebody who has to take a sociology course, easy.
if you dont get an A it's because you didn't try at all, he makes it so clear that you feel like it's grade 2
Ipe is extremely help when it comes to his final paper, notes are easy to follow. Didn't really use the text book, used it 2 now and were almost done the corse. test are really simple. usually 44 multiple questions, plus a bonus question. Take this class for a fun Time.
Soc 100 with Ipe was my easiest class. You must attend the lectures but if you study the notes you will ace his tests. You'd have to be an idiot not to do well. He is a little socially awkward and wont email notes, but lectures clearly and is friendly. Recommended.
Ipe is the ideal teacher. He is a little socially awkward, but the content in SOC is pretty interesting. You must go to class and take the notes, they are very clear and simple. Everything in his tests are based off the notes. You really must be an idiot not to pass with an A.
This course was delivered with next to zero social engagement. Very disappointing.
Show up to class. Take the notes. Get A's on the tests. It's really that simple. Alex gives so many everyday examples for each concept he teaches - it's absolutely impossible not to understand the material. Great instructor.
Ipe is awesome!! He really sparked my love for sociology. He is a little socially awkward but it's kind of adorable. Don't buy the text, practically everything on the tests are based on what is talked about in class. If you attend the classes and take notes, it is an easy A. Oh, and be sure to go to the review classes before the tests!
He literally doesn't want you to bring the text to class so don't buy it. His lectures are rambling and off putting. I was extremely disappointed in his constant childish bashing of any other discipline of the Social Sciences to advocate Sociology. Very off putting.
Very awesome prof! Clear in his notes, easy to follow along. Highly recommended
Easy to follow b/c his lectures are so straight forward and well organized. He's super cute from his little sayings to his demeanour and I really enjoyed his style
The class was based on the lecture notes so as long as you went to class and studied them for exams you'll do fine. Ipe was magnificently clear in his assignments and offers mid-term review classes before he exam to answer any questions and guide us towards the more important questions on the test. I love the quiet atmosphere of the class.
UGH Alex is such a boring instructor. Whenever he would ask a simple question, no one would bother replying because they weren't paying attention and bored to tears- I know I was. Exams are easy, he is an easy marker as well. Don't bother reading the text for this course either, it's not vital to getting a A in this course. Would not recommend him.
Alex's class is not exactly thrilling, but it is very thorough. I learnt a lot in this class and he was very willing to meet me outside of class to discuss tests and essays. The grading is very fair. Attendance is a must-there is A LOT of notes. Overall I enjoyed this class and would recommend it if you are the to learn and not have a "fun" class
Very dry lectures, but easy to understand. I Would take another class of his.
My highlight was when he showed 'How They Killed The Electric Car' and I spent the entire film looking up the points in the movie only to understand what a economic disaster it is to buy an electric car in the States. Of course, this isn't mentioned in the film, or by Ipe after the movie. More propaganda plastered in the classrooms without fact.
I really enjoyed this course. The material isn't the most titillating stuff in the world, but he presents clearly and effectively. I liked how easy it was to stay organized during this course. I also appreciated the optional final paper - if you aren't great with exams, you can make up for it by writing it. Very accessible, easy, yet informative.
You don't need the textbook. You don't need to attend every class like he tries to instill in everyone, but you need the notes. All the questions are based off things he repeats. Overall, pretty good prof. His teaching style is a little dull, but you get all the info, and you get a good grade as long as you have the notes.
I've never met a professor who taught with such clarity. Dr. Ipe chooses his words very carefully when he's explaining concepts or theories and his tests are very fair as he knows it's a first year course and doesn't want to scare away students from the field of sociology. 100% recommend him. Make sure you show up to every class!
Weird guy, but great teacher. All multiple choice tests. Never used the textbook though. You'll love or hate him, but he is very personable and knows his stuff. If you want a relaxing class with a nice teacher take this one! Never did homework once.
Great teacher very straight forward and easy to do well in as long as you try
Best notes I have ever experienced! The notes you take will be your best friend! You don't need the textbook. I got it, then immediately brought it back. I never had to ask him questions, look at you notes and it will make sense. He has good examples to help remember stuff. Easy A if you study! No phones during class! Multiple choice!!
Attend lectures because his notes are 90% verbal. The tests are pretty straight forward, all 3 are multiple choice. If you go to the review classes, you are surely to ace the tests. Don't buy the textbook since it isn't really used. There may be a question or two from there so before the test, go to the library reserves and scan the chapters.
He is Fantastic! Highly recommend him to anyone. He is crystal clear on what he excepts from you. all test questions are from his lectures. all power points are posted on D2L. more than willing to help you if you need it.
You must go to his class if you want to pass. 99% of what's on the test is what he talks about in his lectures. Didn't use the textbook at all, so I regret buying it. You can tell that Alex knows what he's talking about. I would take this class again!
Alex is quiet, yes, but that is clearly due to social awkwardness, not lack of passion! Once I attended his office hours he opened like a book, and was very informative. His lectures are crystal clear and if you attend and take notes, you will do very very well. Just bring a coffee and sit in the front, you will enjoy it!
Alex is super funny, has interesting lectures and is very clear with what he expects from you. Get the textbook to make sure you get an A+ but otherwise you could probably still get an A without it, but you'd have to attend. Besides, his class is interesting, so you might as well go.
Great professor. I learned quite a bit from this class. Has very clear instruction.
Alex was a great professor. Assignments were easy and clearly explained. You have to go to class to get a good grade as very minimal lecture notes are posted online, but all in all he is an easy marker and an easy A.
He is very passive aggressive. I had no problems with him until he sent me an email telling me I had disruptive behaviour. He doesn't like smiling. If you use your phone he'll kick you out. He treats his students as if they are unimportant and I felt as if I was in elementary school.
Alex is very quiet but overal a good prof! This course is graded on your three tests and two group descusions. In order to pass you must show up for leture and study outside of class!
Alex was a decent prof. At first he may come across as a little uninterested during lectures, but he grows on you. He is a super easy marker, and doesn't hand out many assignments at all. His lectures can be a little dull at time, but he makes up for it with his cynical, deadpan sort of humour. Don't buy the textbook, you won't need it all.
Class was super easy, almost no homework but you must go to class to get his slides, he is very vague and very boring, doesn't give any feedback only 3 test and 3 small assignments, not much room to boost your grade and his tests are very confusing and not worded like his slides
Awesome professor! Alex's lectures were right to the point and his exams reflected the lectures to a tee. As long as you show up for class you should easily get an A. He also offers bonus marks!
You must take Alex's classes at Camosun. He's a super clear professor which makes it easy to get a good grade. You must show up to class and take notes. All of his test material is strictly from the notes.
Tests are super hard , with lots of content needed to know.
Super boring, very unapproachable, cant answer questions in class without getting defensive, always ends lectures 20 - 30 minutes early. Lazy, uninterested and not engaging. Gives the written questions ahead of the test, the multiple choice questions are confusing, vague and dont match the lecture material. Steer Clear of any of his classes.
Loved his class. It was very easy as long as you went to class, and reviewed the notes a couple days before. His teaching style is to have a few words out on the slide and he would read out the notes so you can just write without having to look up at the slides. He talked slow and repeated the key points.
Ipe is a good teacher, but very boring to listen to. He does very little to try and engage his class, a few people actually fell asleep during the class as well. Hes very easy-going, but make sure to have several cups of coffee before you attend the lectures.
Quite dull of a class, but very straight forward. Show up to the lecture, do the few assignments, pass (easily with a 95% +). Textbook is not necessary if you take good notes. An easy-A!
Enjoyed classes with Dr IPE. You know exactly where you and what is expected from day one and through out course, this takes some presure off. Displays powerpoint but fills in gaps allowing you to take additional notes for revision. Uses test book in exam so if you dont read it you wont be able to answer those questions. Nice and informative.
The most intelligent sociology professor, Alex Ipe. He will do anything to set his students up for success.
This professor is encompassed with the knowledge and etiquette of which will most of the time, if not always, place students in the ideal position for when transferring to universities across the globe or UVic alike.
VERY dry class, but makes the information very clear. If you attend lectures, take good notes and study from the notes and textbook, it's an easy course to pass
Class content was kind of boring, and the lectures are mostly notes with a few videos. Alex is pretty straightforward and if you show up and look over your notes you should be able to do fairly well in this class.
He teaches in a very clear, steady and logical manner. A lot of the concepts were a review from first year courses but I felt like I understood them more clearly this time around. He's a bit more on the reserved side but is very easy to talk to one-on-one. There's a written exercise worth 1% every class so make sure to attend!
You shall demonstrate high level understanding of course concepts. According to 2019, there is an in-class essay exam worth up to 50% and a final in-class essay exam worth up to 50%. Alex Ipe is knowledgeable, kind, and respectful.
I really enjoyed his lectures because they were so to the point. He clearly told you what you needed to know, and left out everything else. Grades are mostly based on exams, which are somewhat difficult. As long as you take good notes and review them before had, you should be fine. Don't buy the texbook. I didn't touch it - like at all.
I took Soc 100 as an elective thinking it would be a boring class, but it wound up being one of (if not my absolute) favourite courses that I took during my time at Camosun. Alex is very straight up and to the point -- if something in lecture is important you'll know. Tests were multiple choice and fair if you studied the lectures.
I regret buying the textbook as all the info you need is in the lectures. He uploads his slides but still go to class as he provides a lot more info. I got the vibe that he doesn't like lecturing - I didn't find that he was very engaging. BUT he is very clear about what will be on tests and grading criteria, which I liked. Good for an elective.
I was bit weary going into his class especially that he doesn't have the most stellar reviews, although he really is a great prof. I've had little opportunity to communicate with him thanks to covid, although he's always given solid feedback and grades fairly. His soc 101 class is super interesting and id definitely recommend taking it.
He barely communicated with the class, and instead of live or video lectures, he made you read everything. Its hard to read everything online, as it gets tiring on your eyes after a while, but I was able to get good grades anyways, just skimming the lectures. Quite easy, but would not take again. However!! he gets your assignments back in 1/2 days!
Easy but super boring. No face to face time. I found him passive aggressive and unapproachable in email interactions. Grading was arbitrary, uses an outdated version of the textbook and most of the class is based on research from the '90s even though it's on technology. Fast turnaround for marking. Easy A but wouldn't take his classes again .
This was the most boring thing ive had to put myself through. Maybe it was because the whole class was online this semester but even then there was no video meets/interactions. Everything was graded through email and I found his feed back quite rude and passive agressive. Made my final grade .1% short of an A. Easy class but hard to push through
I have had Ipe for both Soc100 and Soc250. Soc250 was way worse. He is extremely dry, and you barely learn anything. I reached out for help to him and he was so rude to me and talked to me like I was stupid. Not very helpful at all
Never met him. No video lectures, all reading lectures that easily take up to 30+ minutes just to try to browse through them. Mark is determined by 3 papers. Hard marker and doesn't provide sufficient feedback on how you can do better. I had to call him out on how I did not agree with his marking to which he changed my mark as I was correct.
His online class was structured worse than any other course I've seen and he makes you buy a textbook that he wrote for the specific course. He was a super easy marker but his feedback was terrible and I had no idea if I was doing something right even if I got a good mark.
No direction AT ALL. never communicated with the class, hardly any instruction. total waste of money. I am very disappointed. Avoid at all costs.
I had him for in-person classes. I was very hesitant in the beginning of the semester. The textbook was wordy and his lectures are dry. BUT, if you take detailed notes, and attend class, he repeatedly gives you the answers to questions on the tests. Study the notes, not the textbook. Easy grader. An interest in Sociology is needed. Approachable.
Not a great lecturer, but makes the class and tests quite easy. Recommend going to lecture as test content is almost entirely trivial information found in the lectures. Not much textbook use and you could probably get by without buying it. Gives out easy bonus assignments you can use to boost an entire letter grade. Likes comparing things to 1984.
Alex is knowledgeable and teaches interesting material but unfortunately is not very engaging, relies way too heavily on slides, and is difficult to approach when you have questions. Lack of integration and proper use of D2L made it frustrating to navigate the course as a student. Your grade relies on almost all just multiple choice exams.
The worst professor I have ever had. Does not engage with the class. Just reads directly from the slides. If anyone has a question, he replies in the most passive aggressive way as you are wasting his time. Has a textbook, but almost none of the content is on the exams. It's strictly what is in his lectures, so you must attend class. DO NOT TAKE.
Interesting course content presented in a lecture heavy format. Easy grade if you attend lectures and take diligent notes, if he repeats something, you best write it down. A true interest in Sociology is needed as he can be rather dry. No final. Wish there was more opportunity to get to know fellow classmates.
Absolutely dry as a bone and uninspired. Hard to follow as he speaks only in a monotone voice and passive-aggressively when asked a question. He is oddly unenthusiastic about his work and refers mostly to slides, giving no additional information or answers and leaving you scrounging through dry slides for answers. Dont miss a single class.
I highly recommend this class for international students, it is easy to understand and very interesting. The professor has a way of explaining with examples for each concept. He does not use D2L at all, it is important to attend class to understand everything and to be able to do the exercises and exams satisfactorily. The book is not necessary.
Alex wasn't a bad professor at all; he just wasn't very engaged with his class. He told us to buy the textbook at the beginning of the term but honestly you *can* survive without it. However, DO NOT MISS HIS LECTURES, what is posted on the D2L will not help you in ANY way for the tests, you must be present in class to know what to study.
Dr. Ipe is very reserved, class is dead silent and consists of him nervously flicking through a slideshow - which is incomplete on D2L. He's respectable but unapproachable. Clear notes and studying the textbook did not aid me with his tests - they are hard. I'm sure many could do well in his classes but this is not the best learning style for me.
Alex definitely knows his stuff, however you can tell that he is pretty uninspired to be teaching low level sociology classes. His lectures were extremely un-engaging and he feels pretty unapproachable when seeking clarification on course content after class. I wouldn't take another sociology class with him
Professor Ipe is amazing, very informative and quality lectures. I would recommend taking some of his classes!
Lectures were not that interesting in the sense that he just read off notes while clicking the slideshow. However, do not miss lecture because the things he posts online will not help you and he tests on random facts he mentioned in class Don't buy the textbook, used it maybe twice
