lol I was in the same class as the person who posted under me. Liles is a nice guy and pretty helpful. He isn't always impartial or fair at grading but I don't think he means to. Do you work, show that you care and at minimum you'll get a B, probably an A. And his teaching style is pretty effective. Thanks Liles
I believe Mr. Liles was a great teacher. He knew what he was talking about, and he hoped to instill in us students the value of communication. The class wasn't very hard, but it was good fun, and I'm glad to have started my college career with Mr. Liles and this class at the beginning.
Great teacher. Very nice and helpful.
Best speech teacher at Arkansas. He doesn't do what the other classes do. He has his own style and you have 2 group speeches and 2 individual speeches. He even gives two easy written tests. Go to class because he lets you out every day at least 30 minutes early. If you don't get an A its cause you didn't do the assignments.
Alex is SUCH an awesome professor. Alex is very laid back and easy to talk to. He tells you exactly what he expects in the grading rubrics and is very fair with points. He also tells you what vocab terms to know for the tests. I was dreading taking Public Speaking, but he made the experience great. I would highly recommend taking Alex's class.
Very good teacher.
I couldn't have asked for a better public speaking teacher. Mr. Liles is not only a great teacher but also a great person. He made this class less stressful and understands that you are nervous and will definitely help you through that. Words cant describe how lucky and thankful I am for taking public speaking with him.
Liles is an excellent professor! He kept class interesting everyday. As long as you show up everyday and do your assignments wholeheartedly, you will receive an A. This class was one of my favorites of the semester. He is extremely helpful and is always looking out for you. I would definitely take this class again. Absolutely get Liles for COMM.
Best public speaking professor ever. I was afraid of talking in public, but he made this class just easy and awesome. 1000% recommended.
Really nice guy. Explains things well but the class is very group discussion orientated and not related towards the exams. So many points for attendance that you could fail every test and still pass. Makes class interesting by incorporating group discussions.
Enjoyed having a voice in this class. Very nice having this class to get opinions out there.
He is a very outgoing professor and makes it easier for people to join into the discussion. Funny and also a relatively easy grader as long as you do well on the test which aren't very hard.
Liles is a good teacher. The class isn't that hard. He really made me think about the world we live in.
Professor Liles is excellent! I highly recommend his COMM1023 Diversity class. It's mostly class participation, but it can be very insightful. He's a great guy, fascinating class! He really tries to get to know his students (even in a lecture class) which I admire.
Enjoyed this class but still could not get an A on any of the tests. Felt that the questions were very confusing.
I enjoyed this class in the beginning, until the TA messed up the grading, so the whole semester when I thought I had an A, I ended up with a B because he didn't address the mistake until after the final exam.
The way he runs the class is a joke. It relies so heavily on group discussion, but when it comes to the test, he hasn't given you all the information. Make sure you attend class, because it is important! Also, the "career community groups" seem dumb, but it is a 200 point boost.
This class should be a relatively easy A. Make sure you show up, that's a huge chunk of the points. The exams can be a little difficult, but he usually curves them. Only bad thing would be that he deviated from his grading scale at the end of the semester which caused a lot of people to get a lower grade than they actually deserved.
An amazing professor, he focusses on learning rather than memorization. You actually discuss things like race and gender in class, and he mediates these discussions very well. Its an easy A class if you do the few assignments and study for the exams. Definitely would take him again.
He's very kind and cares about what he teaches. His policy is he wants your attention while he teaches, but often lets class out early or cancels it if there isn't relevant material to go over. (He won't waste your time if you don't waste his.) I'm glad I had his section
Easiest teacher I've ever had! He's so nice. A lot of times he cancelled class on Friday because he isn't a believer in busy work or wasting our time. Highly recommend.
Dr. Spialek is actually my favorite professor at the U of A so far. He actually wants to help his students understand the material that he is presenting to the class. When in his office hours, he will help you learn how to study for his class and instead of giving you the answers, he helps you figure it out on your own. Recommend him!!!!
Love him! HE is very clear about his expectations, and although he is professional, he still tries to keep everyone in a lightened mood.
This is a larger lecture class, which Alex breaks down into small groups. We do some lecture and then pause for group discussion either with the whole class or within our small groups. The exams require that you actually know the terms and what they mean and you'll need to be able to distinguish between different examples of concepts from class.
Really good professor that truly cares about his students and their grades. He understands public speaking isn't easy for everyone. I actually am going to take another communication class next semester just because he is teaching the course.
Super easy class. A lot of times he lets you out early and he is very understanding about breaks. He will cancel class before breaks and make it clear if extra credit will be given. The assignments are easy and the class is super manageable. Take this if you're looking for an easyish A. There is to recover if you make a not so good grade on a test.
great professor. His lectures are straight forward and easy to understand. Attendance is mandatory so make sure you show up and take the notes form the slide shows. Study for tests and you'll be fine. A lot of times he cancels class on Fridays just because. Get the textbook for the tests or rent from library!
He is very understanding and caring. Take his classes! Great Professor!!
Do not buy the book. Attendance is half the grade. Show up. Tests are common sense
Great guy but his tests are quite hard! Attendance is so important! Not a hard class but his power points do not really help for the test.
Such a great guy. If you go to class and pay attention you'll do fine. I would take him again if I could and you should too!
Show up, be a team player, do the work, you'll get an A
Wants you to make an A! Easy tests if you take notes from the powerpoint. He's enthusiastic and caring about his students. "Sign-in and leave" classes pretty often. Honestly made me want to take more communication courses.
Great class!!! Liles cares about the students success not only in his class but in their life and career! Attendance matters, go to class! 3 tests, resume assignment, easy A
He really likes communication which is cool. You don't really need the book. Group discussions everyday are pretty gross if you hate being forced into a group with random people. He lets you go early very often which is nice.
He's a very kind and caring teacher. There was rarely any homework in the class, and he breaks up lectures with videos and often lets us go if we've covered the material. The lectures were interesting and easy to follow, take him if you get the chance.
COMM 1023: Fairly easy & interesting class. His attendance is sign in at the front of the room before class. He lectures almost every class & gives time for group discussions as well as opens the floor for class discussion & questions. Take notes from the powerpoints & the tests will be easy. He genuinely cares about success of his students.
This class was sooooo fun. the assignments connect to the real world with movie and tv show. You are allowed to express you opinion when writing. I would recommend this class 10 out of 10 times
Attendance is everything and weighs more for your overall grade than even tests do. Honestly, if you just show up to every class and study when necessary, comm. in a diverse world is a super easy A. He is by far the best professor that I have had so far. He cancels class a good bit and lets you out early a lot. He also really cares about students.
Professor Liles is one of my favorite! He takes attendance everyday and it counts as a lot of points, which will keep your grade up if you go. He usually lets out early and also has sign and go days, where you literally sign in and can leave. The day before the test he tells exactly what is on it and if you study that info its an easy A.
Such a nice guy. Truly cares about his students and their success. He gives you plenty of time to prepare for speeches and tells you exactly what will be on the quizzes. Overall, a pretty relaxed class as long as you keep up with the work and prepared on your speech day. He knows how to keep his lectures interesting. Show up to class.
Al was such a funny professor. He does take attendance every day but it's meant to help your grade and it really did help mine. There is a textbook, but you can get by without having to buy it. Everything from the tests is pulled from his lectures and he doesn't post his slides so make sure you take good notes.
really easy course but attendance was mandatory every single day and most days after you signed in he'd tell you to leave
Never studied. Quizzes are all on quizlet or socratic. Easy course. Nice teacher. Turn in 1 250 word assignment and 1 quiz a week. its hard to not get an A
Great class, if you are signing up for public speaking professor Liles is the way to go. very understanding and truly cares about his students. Class is an easy A if you just turn in your weekly assignments.
He is the best professor ever. He lets the class be at your own pace and will take late work as long as its turned in by the end of the semester.
Professor Liles is a super chill teacher. He respects his students and is very good at his job. If you go to class and try, you should make an A.
HE IS GREAT!!!! Def gonna take him for more classes
Alex is by far the best professor I have had. His class is super interesting and is very discussion-based. There are not many grades at all, but you get more out of attendance points than anything else. If you have the chance to take him do it!
Attendance is mandatory you must sign in at the beginning of class. He does not like computers, iPads or phones out while he teachers. He reads from slides and tries to relate the info to real world situations and makes it harder to understand. Content covered in class does not prepare you for tests. Quizlet will be your best friend to pass.
He is super engaging with the class, very nice, and understanding. Just go to class and you will be fine because attendance is a huge part of your grade. He's super down to earth, and is great at what he does.
I really appreciated how Mr. Liles talks to his students. He treats everyone like theyre a friend of his, and I immediately felt comfortable talking to him. We were placed into groups at the beginning of the semester that we remained in the whole time, but youre not necessarily required to talk in front of the whole class.
Alex Liles has been the most chill professor I've ever had at the U of A. He's a great guy who you can clearly tell is passionate about the subjects he teaches. Just show up to class, take some decent notes and PAY ATTENTION and you'll come out with an A.
one of the best professors on campus. if you are interested in taking one of his classes, TAKE IT!!! he is very down to earth and helps prep you towards getting a job. absolutely loved his class and would definitely take it again in a heartbeat.
Alex Liles is hands-down my FAVORITE professor. He is SO caring and makes the classroom environment safe. You can tell he truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is a super lenient grader, and he basically gives you the answers to the quizzes the class before. The speeches aren't terrible because we all feel comfortable.
Professor Liles is one of the greatest professors at the UofA. He tells you how it is and is real with you, which I think is great for this particular class. You do have to sign in everyday for attendance but at the end of the semester he has ways you can make up for those points. Biggest piece of advice I can give is to take GOOD notes
Professor Liles is a great, down to earth professor! The class is very fun and based off of being in groups and participation with each-other. Attendance matters but he is super good at giving breaks. For example, if we cover material early, he'll give you days off of class which is nice. There are very few grades, so plan accordingly.
Professor Liles is awesome and I highly recommend taking this class.
Great teacher, i would recommend you take this class. Not only is this class easy but proffesor liles makes it enjoyable to learn. He is very kind and lienent , just respect him and do what you are asked and you will pass.
Alex Liles is amazing and such a caring professor. He will make sure even if you do poorly on the tests you will still end with a good grade. Attendance matters but he almost always lets us out early and genuinely wants all of his students to learn and retain information. Take good notes for the tests
Prof Liles is one of the best professors Ive ever had. He truly cares for his students, and he grades based on your progress rather than how perfect your speech was. He gives thorough feedback, and genuinely wants the best for his students. I would absolutely recommend him! Sidenote: he does take attendance. But be respectful, and go to class!
Mr. Liles is a great and funny professor. Attendance is mandatory but most days he has out of class assignments or lets you out early. He gives you the content that is on exams.
Alex is one of the best teachers I have had! He is a very easy grader and genuinely cares about all his students passing the class. He sets clear expectations from day one and is very flexible. If you ever have a question or need any help go talk to him he's more than willing to help you!! (go to class it normally is done early anyways!)
TAKE PROFESSOR LILES. HE IS AWESOME. Doesn't give busy work like other teachers and what we do and what he lectures about actually matters. If you get a bad grade on an outline or something written he'll usually let you redo it and get points back!! HES AWESOME!! Really cares abut students too.
Despite the large class size, there were many opportunities to engage in class and discuss content. There were only five grades throughout the semester - three exams, one assignment, and attendance. I did poorly on the exams but was carried by my attendance. He is super honest and genuine, and definitely cares about his job and students.
Professor Liles is a great teacher, but his tests are situational. You do have to take notes, but he doesn't just give you the answer within his slides. You need to look in the book and find things yourselves. Attendance is mandatory and you need to go because you will get a 400 point bonus.
Alex is a really chill guy and when he says he will respect you if you respect him, he means it. He's straightforward and to the point, but explains concepts really well! I would take him again if I had the chance.
Mr. Liles was a fun and chill professor. His class was one of the most interesting classes I have ever been in, and the discussion between the class was always interesting. Usually every Friday he would have out of class assignments. This class really opened my viewpoints on certain topics and was an exciting class to be in.
Very engaging professor! I enjoyed his lectures and our class-wide discussions.
Alex is a great professor and even better in summer. During summer we would read 1-2 entire book chapter every day, and the next day he'd explained it. He also gives u a lot of extra credit for participation, and when many students get an A on a test, he would give to everyone 2-6 extra points on the test. Excellent professor, you'll love him.
Liles is amazing. He usually gives you extra credits for participation. When we could, He'd finish the class earlier. He also has a very easy attendance policy to follow, and he understands if you're late. You should expect to read a lot, do scans, and prepare questions before class. PAY attention to the slides, n' you will enjoy COMM 1023 with him
Attendance is mandatory for this class. Assigns groups that you sit with each day and have discussions with. He goes over slides in class and you take notes, he will not post the slides online. Sends out test review before each test which is helpful. Overall a good professor and not too difficult of a class. Do not take this class if you will skip.
Very rude professor with a huge ego. Very entitled and does not care about his students. -20 points for each class you miss no matter the reason. Cusses at students in front of the class and absolutely no technology is allowed, even if you have a learning accommodation (his words). Take any other professor but him.
He makes attendance mandatory, and you will get 20-30 points deducted for each class missed even with an excused absence. Does not respond to emails. Cusses at students. Says he doesnt get paid enough to post lecture notes. Test doesn't match notes. Tells students grades dont matter. can not use technology. will yell at students for taking notes.
He complains about having to teach, cusses at students, has a huge ego, and is unhelpful. the class average on the first test was a 70, and he said "That tells me I need to make the test harder". The syllabus says you can have a certain amount of missed classes but still takes off 60 points per class missed.
If you struggle showing up to class don't take his courses. Gives no exception for anything related to attendance. Usually gives you Friday off and even Monday. Tests are pretty straight forward, as long as you understand the material you'll do fine. Just don't be lazy and this class will be easy.
First few weeks were super easy and laid back. He'd cram all lecture material into one day's worth of class so we could have off the rest of the week. Halfway through the semester, he threw two huge assignments at us with little time to prepare. Doesn't use blackboard so it's almost impossible to know what your grade is in his class.
He was cool at the beginning, until i was sick and had to miss class twice. My grade dropped from an A to a C. Didn't respond to my emails and didn't accept my doctors note. He cussed out a student. He does not allow technology no computers for notes. Attendance is mandatory but we watched videos on optical illusions for all of class. What a joke.
Liles is an awesome professor and an even more awesome person. He really cares about his students but you need to put effort into the class. Only grades are tests, attendance, and one or two major assignments which are easy. GO TO CLASS! Most fridays and some mondays are "out of class assignments" so you don't have class. Take him!!
Professor LIles's class was not challenging, however, his personality and ego made it difficult to sit through the class. He complains all class about how he doesn't make enough. He has cussed out kids on multiple occasions. Attendance is weighted extremely high, however, he does cancel class on most Fridays and some Mondays.
You will be okay in this class as long as you go to class and pay attention. He has "out of class assignments" most Fridays so you don't have to show up to class. Basically you "have class on your own." He is respectful to you as long as you are respectful to him. The tests are a little hard: more application of knowledge than memorizing terms.
Liles just wants you to show and pay attention. You can more or less get away with doing nothing in class as long as you are there for the attendance points and have communicated with someone at least once in your life. Very intuitive material, just make a point of memorizing the names from his assigned readings as they usually come up on tests.
Most of your grade is participation. Is hard to listen to sometimes but if you give respect he will return it. Textbook isnt mandatory but is recomended
He and the class were fine. His ego made it difficult to respect him. He mentioned daily how little he gets paid, yet, he'd cancel class for "out of class assignments" every Friday (not complaining, just ironic). He cursed at a student & kicked them out of class in front of the whole lecture (unprofessional). Attendance is worth most of grade.
Eh. Overall not a terrible professor, I would take him again if I had to. The other reviews about attendance are true, you HAVE to go to class. He did have some anger outbursts, but towards the end of the semester he got better. He uses the same content every year, so you can find quizlets for his tests online. Tests are fairly easy too.
Easy class, but he needs an ego check. He did indeed curse out a student in front of everybody, granted he was sleeping in class but professionalism isn't there. He is very nice and understanding for the most part, just go to class because it is mandatory and study for the exams. If you have a legitimate excuse for missing class, he won't care.
Most of the grade in this class is attendance. He just wants you to show up, pay attention, and stay off your phone. If you take notes on the slides and review what he tells you to for the test, you should do well. Textbook recommended because some stuff he doesn't cover in lectures. On Fridays you almost always don't have to go. Tests are hard.
Alex was not a very respectable man this past semester. His class is extremely easy, and participation is definitely required, but he was very disrespectful to a student in class which caused a lot of us to lose respect for him. Anyways, he sends out a study guide prior to each exam, and most things on the exam are on there. Very easy class overall
I took common in diverse world. Super easy class. You get 20 points for every class you attend which helps boost your grade since theres only 3 tests. He cancels class every friday and u can opt out of the textbook. I went to every class, got A, B, and C on the test and passed with an A. I would be ok having him as a prof again
I really likes Mr. Liles. He made class good and relatively easy. If you respected him he respected you. There were only three tests through the semester which sucked because I did not do good on the first one and it messed up my grade, but other than that I really enjoyed his class. He rarely has class on Fridays and it was paper notes.
He is an awful professor who enforces rules such as no technology in the classroom. However, the class was extremely easy as over half of the grade came from attendance. I would take it again simply because of how easy it was, but each lecture was boring, with a weekly tangent about how little the school pays him.
It was the easiest class I've ever taken. We did not have lectures unless you as a student needed them (the class was basically online, I never attended). He would post an assignment and quiz at the beginning of each week and you had a full 7 days to complete it. It took me 30 minutes max.
Ridiculously easy class. Not lecture heavy, thankfully. Basically, read the chapter, take a quiz, write a 250 word assignment every week. That's all you need to pass the class. The midterm and final were the same questions from the previous quizzes, so if you passed those, there is no reason you won't pass the mid and final.
Great professor, held class every MWF, but attendance was not required. I went usually once a week, but sometimes not at all. It was not necessary to go. Easy quiz and 250 word paper due Sunday night each week. Exams are very easy and taken outside of class. He is very good at communicating when cancelling class or answering emails.
He was a very good and nice teacher to have. I honestly have not been to class since the 3rd week of school and I have an A in the class. It is basically an all online class and the tests are extremely easy. Def recommend!!
This class was bacially online since attendance isn't mandatory. Professor is super nice and likes when his students come to class. only 2 exams and they are open browser. quiz and a 25o paper due every week but super easy even if you don't go to class.
Mr. Liles is an awesome instructor. Take him.
Great class and Mr. Liles is the best! No attendance, all work is done online and can be completed without going to class, all notes are posted online. Very easy class and you actually do learn quite a bit, but extremely easy and highly recommend you take.
Easy class. You usually have1-3 assignments due on Sunday at midnight, but the assignments are super easy and you also get some extra credit opportunities.
Great prof. dont have to go to class and everything is online. take if you need an easy class to not worry about. one quiz and one essay a week that takes a total of 1 hr of time. went to a couple lectures and he's super chill and knows what the class is. 100% recommend
Really easy class, only 1 quiz and writing assignment due every sunday. All exam and quiz questions are on quizlets. Really cool guy that loves teaching Communications. His lectures were decently engaging, however, the course content itself is pretty lackluster. Alex Liles was a great professor and I would take a class with him again.
Really easy professor. Weekly assignments and 10 question quiz due every Sunday. I think we only had 2 tests that were online and no lockdown. Everything for this class can be found on quizlet. Plus, there are some extra credit assignments. Highly recommend for an easy class
easy class
Professor Liles' class is super easy - just show up, take some quizzes and write short assignments. The textbook isn't really needed. unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the provided review materials. Overall, an effortless A+.
He changed it this year, but there is only one assignment for the whole class. He gives a prompt and you just write for the class period. While that sounds scary, he reassures everyone even if you don't come to class you should be fine.
I took public speaking with him and this class was truly not hard at all. Attendance is optional and speeches can be done virtually. 10/10 class!
I loved having professor Liles. He has amazing lectures and is super caring and funny. He will always answer any questions. Attendance is not mandatory, but the class is so great I always went. The only assignment is the final, which is an in class essay. It is super easy as long as you try. I would 1000% recommend Mr.Liles and this class.
This class was an easy A. One assignment, and it's an in class essay at the end of the semester. The class is set up so you don't have to attend, and you can still perform well. When I did attend, I had a great time and found his class to be entertaining and super motivating. Overall, a 10/10 for me.
He is a great teacher that I would totally take again. There is only one test and as long as you try you will be alright. He doesn't require you to go to class but I would because he is fun to listen to, practical, and normally lets you out pretty early. Very easy class to do very well in.
easiest class ever and fun lectures (not mandatory tho). no assignments, exams, etc just 1 "paper" at the end that basically shows that you gained something for the class. only went to a few classes just because and got a 100% in the class. really easy class that i'd highly recommend and the prof is super nice! def take!!!
