Not bad to look at but a total JERK!!! Fine right up until midterm....AVOID
I thought he was great up until our final exam, that thing came out of no where, it was very unfair.
Not bad all semester. But watch out for the final exam!! When he says short answer, he really means LONG answer. Good luck!

Knows and enjoys teaching, his quizzes are all multiple choice
Great up until midterm, then turned PSYCHO on everyone. Crazy marking scheme on papers and only uses powerpoint to teach. Bad name for the Political Science Department
the best god damned looking professor. What a legend
Great teaching and testing is fair, I would recommend his class. He is very knowledgeable regarding politics and he is bilingual, both of which are HOT!
Alex is an extremely articulate prof- everything about him is very well organized. He uses all power-point, and has creative ways of helping us learn. Definitely knows his subject, and will respond to emails usually within the hour. Can be a bit dry and impersonal. Overall great though!
Marland is the man. He's incredibly concise and helpful, and is actually a pretty funny guy. Great course, great prof, highly recommended.
went to class because i enjoyed looking at him:) not bad at explaining things either:P
This guy is AMAZING! I'm going to try to take as many courses with him as I can. Love him! He's so clear on what you need to know, and he's freakin' sexy as all hell too.
This guy is great! Very interesting, not boring at all. Great notes on powerpoint. Always shows funny video clips.
One of MUN's finest. Tells it like it is, but keeps it interesting. Great sence of humor, which helps gets students into the class (Unlike zombies like Wallack). I genuinely enjoy going to class. If only MUN would get chairs like the INCO building has in every class room.....
Really clear and well prepared. Awesome powerpoint so you just take the notes right off the screen. Super good looking too. :)
Really annoying class subject...he's good looking compared to the rest of the dept, however he knows it. Corny in lectures... hated the class
He's really energetic, but as somebody else said, he does know he's good looking, and comes off somewhat arrogant at times. His courses are fairly straight forward, and so are his tests. Except the final :S
Did 2710 and 2711 with him...and I will definitely be taking more classes with him in the future! Keeps the lectures interesting even when the subject is dry, and you can tell he actually makes an effort! Top Notch.
I love this guy. Classes are fairly interesting and his impression of Chretien is hilarious.
He's a total professional, and really an expert in his field. I'd recommend the course to anyone, even though it is a ton of work, it's worth it. One of the only courses in the department that gives you hands on skills at the end. This professor is a fantastic addition to the department.
Great Prof! Probably my favorite so far in the department. He's a hard marker, but he's worth it. He enjoys his job and you learn things in his courses. You also apply your knowledge to a project, which is great. I had other courses with him too. If you think Poli Sci is boring, take a class with him, he'll change your mind.
Professional and helpful. Loves his job - sticks to rules and regulations of the University more than most. He is young and likes to teach. He puts effort into lectures.
I did 2710 and 2711 with him. Did well in the courses, but this guy drives me crazy. Marland, if you're for some reason reading this - Politics is politcs. Not hockey. And most of us don't care what kind of soup the Prime Ministers are like :S
if politics aren't your thing....take the class anyways! he's super intelligent and can speak more than one language....yum!
excellent prof ... super energetic would recomend him to anyone ... power points are great... really knows his subject
Marland is a hard marker. 3 quizzes during the year & only 2 count. The quizzes however are only 10 multiple choice. His midterms are also brutal. Its not an easy A but you will not fail the course if you work for it.Classes are all powerpoint & some funny videos. Mandatory to show up, no notes online. Overall He's Helpful, Sweet, & BEAUTIFUL.
Great Prof, pretty interesting and overall easy. Taking more courses with him next semester i would defintely recommend him
Text hardly used, but he'll pull some obtuse tidbits to throw you a curve ball on midterm & final. His lectures are not that boring but taking notes while he speaks the entire time is tedious & if you miss something, its gone. The quizzes do NOT prepare you for his midterm & final so pour over notes from the start, do that & you'll likely get 75%>
BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL!!! :)AMAZING PROF, LOVE HIM, REALLY CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS!!
Excellent! His classes are interesting, he gives clear notes, and is very helpful. I would take a course with him again if given the chance.
he is the reason for me becoming a posc major. this man is amazing he really gets his students involved and his very helpful i'd recommend him to anyone i will do any course he offers.
By far the best prof ive ever had at MUN and not hard on the eyes either!!!
Alex Marland is very prententious and self absorbed. He thinks he created Canadian politics and knows everything. I missed an exam due to unforseen circumstances and all he did was give me****. He says that he's open to suggestions or constructive criticism, but becomes very defensive when his teaching methods are questioned.
Very smart guy. He knows his stuff about Canadian politics, and obvious does a lot of background research in order to make his lectures interesting. His exams are very fair if you study the notes and go to class. He is very approachable and helpful. He also likes to get people involved with discussion. Sidenote: Extremely attractive!
Good guy. Try's to keep lectures interesting and informative. Look forward to taking courses with him again.
He is a Great teacher, he makes his lectures interesting, his notes are clear and easy to understand, his test are easy, he makes sure you know what to expect on the test!
Found him Exalent Great notes he keeps them interesting with newspaper editorials and comics, he's funny and he's really helpful I went to him several times for advise on future courses and he really helped and was easy to talk to. Posc 1010 & 2711 had 3 easy quizes worth 20% and he counts your best 2 quizes and the other 80% comes from exams
avoid at all cost. This guy thrives on tricking people.Final very unfair and current events that were never mentioned in class or the book.
Professor Marland is the best professor in the department. Yes, he is a hard marker but if you study his notes and take his advice you will do well. As for the comments you will read about his final being hard and unfair, it's not true. He prepares you well in advance and provides you with a detailed outline. I've taken 3 courses with him already!
This teacher was absolutely amazing! He makes everything so interesting. He uses many different varieties of teaching methods, such as cartoons, videos, notes, stories etc. He is very easy to listen to, and he is pretty easy on the eyes as well. This is a great class for anyone, whether poli sci is your preference or not.
His class was very interesting but I did find the midterm and final to be unfair with the way he words his questions.
Good professor, lectures are interesting and he's helpful. But,he makes the course more difficult than it should be. I did Posc 1010 after taking a few 2nd and 3rd year Posc courses, so it should have been easy. But, you have to know his notes inside&out, questions are usually very tricky. Also, they are worded oddly & can be too long and ambigous.
IF only he was as good As he THINKS he is!!1
Sitting in class right now and he just used ratemyprofessor.com as an example. Great prof btw
He make is final exams unnecessarily brutal, he thinks he's is god himself!
Great prof. Class was always interesting, and he genuinely seemed to care about his students and was extremely helpful. There were no surprises on the final exam.
A great professor!! I always knew what to expect on evaluations and he went out of his way to help! Get him if you can!
First half of the semester I thought he was incredible. Then it became very redundant and routine what he was doing. He wanted to come across as very helpful but he wasn't as helpful as he wanted to be. This course went downhill for me after the first half. It was very easy for me because I had learned almost everything in high school already.
love/hate relationship. makes you work for your marks and you'll usually end up disappointed. I'd go as far as saying he has fascist tendencies. har har Unfortunately he teaches most of the best poli sci courses at mun
First off, i'm not interested in politics at all. Nor did I know anything about it before signing up for this class, it was simply a prerequisite for my major. His notes are spot on, and extremely well put together. If you read the book and study the slides you should have an easy A. He also shows clips and comics to get the class involved. very go
Right Sick
Easy through the term, has a essay question on final where he punishes you for the easiness of the term. Good course, overall.
He's amazing, the most helpful prof.. and he tries very hard to keep his class interesting and succeeds at it. The final exam can be a little tricky for people not used to writing essays, but he prepares you very well for it. Would love to take another class from him!
He was very arrogant class! Extremely frustrating to go to for assistance and makes it very known that his students are not nearly as smart as himself. Unfortunately the worst prof I've had at mun yet!! Class material straight forward, however testing is unreasonable especially the final.
Very arrogant, seems personable and friendly during lectures but is incredibly difficult to approach. Class was okay, exams were more difficult than expected but not too bad. Based on arrogance and cockiness, not someone that should be the undergraduate advisor for political science.
Great prof!! The lectures are entertaining and interesting! The tests/quizzes were easy, however the final was brutal, but I think that was a problem with how the course itself was designed. Definitely recommend!
Makes things super clear, tests on small details, but is super helpful for essays.
Excellent professor. Class was very challenging, and is designed to prepare you for grad work. And that it does. He is helpful, but you MUST do the readings and see him if you are having issues. You learn skills that you will carry over into other courses - not including the actual course material you learn. If you take it - prepare to work.
Really good lecturer. Slides are well organized, but you have to go to class. Gives you really clear expectations. Follow his syllabus instructions like a checklist, you'll get an A for sure.
This was an internship course so I didn't really deal with Marland directly much. However his written assignments, while graded toughly, were always clear in what he expected. His syllabus gives a point form of what he wants from the assignments and he was always quick to respond to any questions a student may have regarding the course.
For this course, it wouldn't have been the worst thing to put someone in charge. Marland comes off as very intimidating and at times, patronizing. After a couple of meetings, he does seem to warm up, but first impressions will most likely turn people off from what I feel is the most beneficial course of the department.
I have had Marland three times; for Poli Sci 1010, 2711, and 4860. I enjoyed him each time but he is much tougher and expects more from students in a 4XXX level course then 1XXX or 2XXX level courses. In 4860 you do not want to come to a class unprepared and you need to put in a lot of work for the group assignment and exams.
Really boring lectures. Pop quizzes were common. Doesn't treat his students with respect. He seems more focused on his personal projects than on his students well being.
The course that I took was POSC 2800 but I didn't see that choice. The remote delivery focused mostly on teaching how to research Canadian politics and write better essays. Pay close attention to his instructions.
I found that hes an extremely tough grader and his expectations for assignments is really high.
Definitely has high expectations for his students and assigns what one may consider being more difficult if they don't read instructions carefully, spend time on them, and reach out to ask about any uncertainties. He is always happy to help and responds quickly. Lectures were informative but reading the textbook can be additional helpful.
Dr. Marland is accessible outside of class but is an insanely tough grader and there are so few assignments you're graded on. I found the work itself enjoyable and I learned so many research and writing skills, but it took up a lot of my time. Get ready to work your butt off!
Dr. Marland really is an amazing prof. His instructions are extremely detailed and he responds to emails very quickly. He is definitely one of the tougher graders in the political science department but its easy to consistently get As on your papers if you put in the time and do the research.
His syllabus for assignments are very clear and he seems to mean well but the notes he sends out you basically get from youtube subtitles (which is extremely time consuming) because there is isn't even the bare mininium of notes in the slideshows in the videos, from the head of the department I expected more
This semester this is the only course he is teaching and makes it feel like this is the only course you are taking. The workload is extremely heavy and this course also takes double the time all my other courses combined, Notes are also just youtube subtitles. Don't post anything on D2L either. By far the WORST political science prof I have taken.
The WORST prof I have had so far at MUN, an impossibly tough grader and your only graded on very few things. Notes are youtube subtitles, the sense of entitlement he has is off the charts, do not care if you pass or fail as long as he gets paid at the end of the day. He also do not use D2L.
While Dr. Marland is a very tough grader, he teaches you how to write concisely, which is an incredibly important skill to have in the world of politics. If you are going to take this course, you CANNOT slack. As long as you keep up and put the effort in, you will do well. Dr. Marland is also very approachable and will answer any question you have.
Dr. Marland is kind and understanding in some respects, but he is a very tough grader. It's definitely necessary to read the textbook and attend lectures or watch the videos if you're doing it online. Would not recommend this course unless you are really interested in canadian politics and ready to a lot of work.
Dr. Marland is approachable and a nice guy. I found Dr. Marland had clear instructions for his papers and responded quickly to emails. Overall POSC 2800 was a good course. You will do good in this course if you follow the syllabus instructions.
He is a hard grader and expects a lot for a second level course. I found this to be one of the toughest courses of my degree. He is kind and offers students a lot of help, but this is not an easy course to get an A in, from my own experience. It takes so long to edit work to his standards because he does not want any "filler" in assignments.
Dr. Marland is very knowledgeable and makes you know it. Uses his classes as opportunities to network with local politicians and assignments to pad his research. Tough grader and condescending. If you follow the syllabus you will do well no question but he is a lot to deal with. Definitely cares more about himself than students.
Marland knows a lot about Canadian politics and has high expectations. He assigns information notes that get you researching politicians from years ago that you can't find much about online. There are lots of guest speakers. He replies to questions quickly. If you put in the work, you'll do well.
Good prof. Lots of guest speakers.
