It is hard to find a good math teacher at SCC. Alex was great. He had personality and was very knowledgable in Math. Does not collect homework. Very helpful during office hours.
Great and helpful instructor who makes learning challenging, yet fun :-)
Goes too fast in class, tells him to slow down but he doesn't. Grading system is whack. Try not to take him if you can.

Alex was difficult yet fun he made learning easy but his grading was ridiculous...his tests were tricky but the quizes which were worth almost nothing were easy..id say take him if you are a great test taker
He is a good teacher and is more than willing to answeer your questions. On the other hand his grading scale is based mainly on exams and his tests are really really hard. Half the students end up dropping his class.
goes over everything way to fast, doesn't listen to students, and tests are way too hard. He isn't willing to slow down and help students. Don't take a class with him!
he is a jerk! he has a weird sense of humor and does not go over things very well, he needs to go back to school and learn how to be a better teacher. his tests are hard but the quizzes are a breeze. i do like the fact that no homework is collected!
he is very unclear and confusing.
This class is so hard. He thinks he is funny, but he isnt and its annoying. And he is not very clear on anything. his tests are impossible. I dont think anyone im my class passed!
I thought he was a great teacher, and took alot of time to make sure that people understood. I also liked the way he graded his tests, because he graded them on work, not just anwsers! No roll, and no homework collected!
If you need to review algebra, stay away. He moves to fast. If you remember algebra and know what you are doing you might want to take this prof, you will probably pass. No homework, tests and quizzes only. Nice guy, sort of quirky(check out his outfits). Dropped this class, I needed slower pace.
I really like Mr. May. I have flunked algebra a bunch of times, but his teaching style strikes me as very clear and straightforward. I like him so much I have taklen him three semesters in a row(not the same class). There is a lot of homework, but it's math!
He's cool... Just that he wears the same cloths everyday..But, he's a straight forward person tho..and he trys to be funny..
I think Mr. May is a very good teacher. I have always been afraid of Math and got bad grades until I took his class. He is very helpful; answers all of the questions you have and his tests and quizes are mostly based on homework. If you do HW and listen to waht he says on his lectures, you should be fine in this class. Definately taking him again.
This teacher is great for college students because he doesn't require you to do HW. He's a very nice guy and is easy to talk to. His lectures are not boring and he does explain very well. His tests and quizzes are similar to the HW problems. He does lecture pretty fast but he will slow down if you speak up. I would definitely take his class again.

well spoken professor, provides many examples and is very helpful to questions when asked.
This teacher is great. I understand when he explains and if i don't i just need to aska question. His tests and quizzes are pretty easy, i would rather have him collect HW as an extra credit like last semester though. He's a very nice guy and easy to talk to.
well. he is good if u read the text before class and DO ALL ASSIGNED homework.
He's a great teacher who likes to make dumb jokes and we laugh even when there not funny. Plus he likes to bring a cup of tea every freaking day to class! Its awsome and yeah he helps u but hes tough.
He is a jerk
to begin with this course is not that easy. He is however a very good teacher, knows his stuff gives you some hints on how to remember thigns. Trys to make jokes which are sometimes funny. Just do your hw even tho he doesnt collect it and study study study. he gives a review sheet before exams which is good. HE's a good teacher, but hard class.
exams are worth 60% of your grade quizzes worth 10% finals worth 30% and his final exam was hard
He is a nice teacher and explains things clearly. Just do your homework on time and BY YOURSELF, grade A is not that hard.
Excellent teacher. Alex is very approachable and shoots everything straight. Do and understand homework and you'll be fine, quizzes and exams are based on homework so if you do it everything else is cake. Final is tough and will require you thouroughly understand ALL concepts.
this guy is funny, he is the best math teacher I have had so far. He is an average grader, the course is difficult no matter who you take but he will make it less painful.
It just doesnt get better than this guy, hes helpful and slows down whenever, hes really cool and always makes funny jokes, BEST MATH teacher by far! Take him!
Picks ALL test and quiz questions from the HW!!
very good teacher, clear, hw(doesn't collect), test ?'s are from book.
best math teacher i've ever had... really engaged teacher... sincerely wants his students to get it
A horrible teacher:( Incredibly arrogant and pretentious. He is stiff, without emotion, and thinks he is funny. Not a person I would ever choose to be around. Not a teacher that I would ever reccommend; in fact, stay away! He goes way to fast when explaining information and is not ever clear about what he is looking for.

The last person who rated Alex is an idiot. Read the comment after that. Anyone who doesn't get along with Alex May has serious social problems.
The key to passing: Do the homework. It's easy to fall behind if you fail to do the homework. Test questions are straight from the homework, and the tests make up your grade. Do the homework! It's key! He's a great teacher too.
He's pretty nice.
I don't think he was that good. He was pretty nice, but I didn't learn much and his tests were difficult. The final was ridiculously hard. He grades ONLY on tests. :(
Mr. May is hecka cool and helpful but he isn't a real good teacher. Your grade depends on the exams and the The tests were no so bad but the final was really hard. His review and study guide only really mentioned about a third of what was on the final.
Do the homework, go to class, pay attention, and you'll do fine... People give up on him to easily...
This course is fun and easy, and Alex is a cool, energetic teacher. Taking good notes is about all you need to do well on tests (which make up the bulk of your grade).
Very good teacher, but tests are extremely difficult. you have to study or you won't pass. Gives excellent notes and persistently asks you for questions! If you are willing to put a lot of time into CAlculus then take him!
Alex is the most amazing Math teacher I've ever met. Took him for Stat but he's willing to help me with Calculus, too. Clear explanation, interesting lectures. Don't hesitate to raise you hand for a question. He makes me love Math even more. I'm considering taking MATH 482 just bc he's instructor :)HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Alex rocks! :)
Smart guy who loves math. His his main goal is to prepare students as best he can for the next class. He can go fast sometimes in lecture but his test are consistent with the homework he assigns, so tests are usually reasonable.his lectures are closer to the tests than the examples in the book. He is nice and helpful though; my 2nd time taking him.
He is awesome!! though the exams are tough, you can learn a lot from him. He is also really strict on grading. No extra credits and homeworks are not counted
He is a wise man. The best I had had so far. BEST MATH TEACHER!!!He cares about his students... Lots of homework
This class is hard. He teaches really fast. He gives A LOT of hwk but its not mandatory. supposedly his test and quizzes are based off the hwk but i find that hard to believe. If you have hwk questions he'll help you but he doesnt provide any review or study guides. i worked my butt off and i only got a B. it was diappointing.
No study guide for the test, lots of homework, at least 4 hour of homework a week, add some calcules stuff, Altogether, make his class harder to pass, i didnt make it in his class, i worked really hard, but his class was impossible to pass for me, not an easy teacher at all, i never had a teacher like that before, definately tough. if you are avera
It is a hard class, and he even makes it more harder to pass. No review for tests, He will make you do the stuff, which is not even is your book, a horrible teacher at Sac City campus, More than half of the class just gave-up on him, and he was smilling. he says only ten people will pass the class out of fifty.
Horrible teacher, way too fast,I will never take him again. Aoid him. He makes his class impossible to pass.
Not a good teacher at all,Make its class harder to pass. No extra credit at all.
No calculators,no study guide, no extra credit, He is way too fast, Some of the problems he brings from a calcules books, in his exame half of the problems are world problems ( harder one). He is very hard on grading. I never had F in my life, but i had in his class. I took the same class over summer and got an A. He is horriable.
No calculators, no problem. He is definitely a challenge but if you just apply yourself a little then you will be fine. Paces himself fast, grades strictly, and content is a little heavy, but personally it works well with me.
Alex is one of the charming teachers in the college. He is helpful and funny if you pay attention and ready to learn. He is not an easy grader, but you can learn a lot from him. Really enjoy his classes!
Alex's calculus class is awesome, just like him! He shows all the work out step by step to make sure all the students can get. The most important thing is that he teaches you the way to think and solve problems. He's absolutely an excellent teacher!
His class is very very very hard to pass. if you want to take his class, then just take one class because you really have to work hard to get a C in his class. He lectures so fast.
Always available for help in his office hours. Make use of it and ask good questions at the beginning of each class meeting. If you have a question during class, he'll try his best to answer and will stop everything for you. If there's time, He'll crack a few math jokes. Alex is a really nice guy.
Alex May is the best math teacher I ever had. He is funny, and yes, can be fast at times, but that's only because the students are so slow! I had no problem keeping up with him. I got A's on all the tests and Alex called me a genius and recommended me for tutoring! It doesn't get any better than that.
What a charming prof! Alex is one of the best math teacher! His classes are not easy. But you like math, you will absolutely like him. He is a genius in math. In his class, you can really learn how to think logically and step by step rigorously! Highly recommend him!!!
He is the best teacher ever. He reasonable, nice, and easy. His study guides match his exams. I recommend students to take his class because he reviews before he teaches the new things.
He is a very good teacher. He is very fair to everyone, treat everyone with respect. Attendance is require because if you are not there, then what is the point of even taking the class. He goes very fast, so you'll have to pay attention. Quizzes are simple and very similar to the homework. Very good teacher.
Alex is an excellent stats instructor. Extremely helpful and eager to help with any problem you may have. I went into this class scared as hell, and came out feeling the most confident I have ever felt coming out of a math class. Study the HW. This isn't an easy A, but I promise you, the work will speak for itself. Great class, great guy. Take him.
Pretty straight forward teacher. Reasonable, funny, loves his career and loves to teach. Energetic. Just pay attention in class, read his notes, do some hw if you don't know how to do problems. He doesn't collect hw but most of his Exams and quizzes are exactly like the hw. GREAT PROF!!
Alex May is the best teacher for STATS! He explains things really clear and if you want a good grade in the class do all your homework even though he doesn't collect them. Also you get notes on the exam and final. I highly recommend this teacher for STATS!
Great Professor! He gives you very detailed notes and uses a lot of what you do in homework and class as problems for tests and quizzes. I don't like math very much and loved his class!
Taking this teacher over the summer made me realize that you have to study for yourself. He provides a foundation that you have to build off of. He is quite difficult. 3rd test had over 70% D's. No Curve. If the majority of class fail the test, then why cant you curve or replace with final?
He is a great professor. Homework is mandatory because the quiz will have the same questions as the homework. His tests are not that hard. He gives you a study guide a couple days before the test which are very similar to each other. Very charactered dude with some funny stories he tells to his class to break the ice. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIM!!
Difficult course. Notes are helpful and homework helps for exams. Available for asking questions though. Good lecturer.
Nice person, but not a good teacher. He goes too fast and doesn't give students enough time to process the information. I liked math and he made me slightly dislike it now.
love this teacher. afte each problem he will the the studnets to see if they understand the materials that he had just cover...there are times where he would literally beg his students for questions.
Nice guy, but I can't say he was a good teacher. Homework is a must. He gives out study guides, but the questions on the tests are completely different
Alex is a good teacher. He cares about his students, always answer all the question of the students about the lecture and try his best to make them understand the concept. The class is hard itself, but He makes it fun and enjoyable. If you do all the homework and review his lecture examples, you'll do well in the weekly quizzes and exams.
too mcuh crammed into one class section with no answered questions
Nice guy. Goes insanely fast.I mean so fast that makes him sweat, seriously. Gives you practice exams that are literally irrelevant with actual texts. U better have the underived time and attention to his class if u wana pass; but if you're taking other classes along with his, well, good look cause he isn't gona make it any easy. Always available.
Not a good professor at all! He makes you know way too much for his midterms and he gives out quiz every week. Harsh grader!
Avoid taking this professor! Extremely harsh grader.
The class itself was quite tough and he really is greatly enthusiastic about the class. He loves his theorems and really loves explaining how things work, but skips steps and really expects you to have a solid math base. If you don't put in the effort for this class, you won't understand him in lecture at all.
He is a very good teacher, and cares about his students. I would definitely recommend taking him. HIs tests are fair they can be challenging but as long you do the homework you'll be fine. His tests questions are exactly like the homework.
Alex is a great teacher. The best math teacher I've had so far. Genuinely cares about the students and will always take time to ask the class if there are any questions. Goes over homework during the first part of class. 4 tests including the mid and final. Takes up a fair amount of time in your schedule if you want to get an A.
Clear Cool instructor. I got a D, but I'm betting a D in his classs is worth a B in most other classes. I guess you gotta work hard and just do the homework. Almost all exams questions are from the homework. The class is fair, but you still gotta work hard and keep up with the sections. Okay guy, okay person. i guess...
He is excellent teacher.i took his math400 in fall.he is the best teacher who are teaching math 400 at Scc.he will give students enough time to think when he feel his students will have difficulty with points of lecture. His lecture is fast but is very clear. You will feel you time is not wasted in his class.he grades very nice.
The more questions you ask, the more he will try to answer it. Though he may explain it in a difficult way, you have to think around it and realize what he is talking about. He does go fast but will pause for questions. He makes the class fun, though his jokes are corny.
SUCH A GOOD TEACHER! I love how he proves things so the students understand why they are the way they are. Example: the quadratic formula. He is SO helpful! He always stop to answer questions. I took his Math 120 class.
He's a helpful teacher, but just know that you have to work extremely hard if you want to make it in the class! He makes the tests really hard, and most of the students were getting D's or F's when I dropped the class. I'm going to take it again next semester with a different teacher.
This is an amazing teacher. I took a class with him 8 years ago and still remember what a great teacher he was. He helped me to easily overcome my fear of math and I still consider him one of the most inspirational teachers I've had/
He's a great teacher! He comes in every day with a smile. He's a friendly and approachable guy that gives a good vibe. He answers homework questions at the beginning of class. His quizes contain two questions and you can't use a calculator on it. Which isn't bad since the problems come out of the book. Only bad thing is that he doesn't collect HW.
The worst teacher i have ever taken.Goes to fast for a subject like trig. tries to explain but for some reason, he just cant go thru his students. More than half of the class failed his class.
Professor May is a phenomenal teacher, He is extremely helpful and approachable. Feel free to ask for help when the subject gets difficult and be prepared for his test. Overall he is a great teacher.
Professor May is terrible. If I had trouble on an assignment or test, after I would ask him for help, but he never helped me! He always said "There's nothing I can do." Um, he's supposed to help students if he teaches! I've never failed a class before, but I did here. He failed over half the class; so many people I know worked hard. Avoid him.
Took math120 with this wonderful teacher and got so interested in math that i took math300 with him just for the heck of it. Do your homework and you will succeed in quizzes and exams. I don't know how you expect to succeed without those essentials. Alex is introverted, yet funny and engaging. Love him!
Lacks clarity & expects student questions to fill in the gaps in his lectures, which was not effective. Crams too much material into each test, study guides are not consistent with tests, will not slow down for the students' level, has all the skills needed to be a mathematician but not to be an educator. Avoid him and save your time and your GPA.
ALEX MAY IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER SEEN IN SAC CITY. HE IS VERY DISORGANIZED, AND DOESN'T PACE HIMSELF HE JUST GOES OVER TOPICS WHENEVER HE FEELS LIKE. HE ASSIGNS OVERLY MANY HOMEWORK'S AND DOESN'T GIVE ANY CREDIT FOR IT.HE IS NOT CLEAR AND IS HARD TO FOLLOW I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND A THING IN HIS CLASS. ALL AM SAYING IS HE IS NOT GOOD "TEACHER"
I.Love.Alex.May!! Took him for math 120, then took Math 300 just because he told me to. <3 His exams are awesome, as he is awesome. He is funny because of his self-depricating humor. I will never forget when he taught us to never put a zero on the bottom of a fraction. He SCREAMED it, and he is an introvert, so it was spectacular.
Earned an A his class. He is an outstanding teacher, humorous and overall a great guy. Be prepared for massive amount of homework. As a warning Take his class if you feel you want to be well prepared, but the reward is worth it.
Terrible teacher for those struggling with math. His exams are ridiculous and he starts the class where most other 120 classes end. The book was cheap, but so terrible most complained they couldn't reference it. I studied on average 4 hours a night and I still had to drop. Most dropped; the class started out packed and ended with maybe 15 people.
Professor May is a very good teacher and is very clear in teaching. His lessons and examples are very clear, however, his tests are hard. His tests are often much harder than his study guides so you have to be prepared for some of his questions. You need to do homework in order to pass the class since his quizzes are based on homework.
A truly gifted mathematician. I took him last semester and he truly gave me the essential building blocks in mathematics. He's an inspiring guy and a has a great sense of humor. Super helpful and committed to his craft, but you MUST be ready to work. He is a tough teacher, but you will learn so much if you work hard. He makes time for you!!
Alex is a great Calculus professor. His lectures are very organized and clear. He begs for questions and answers them all. Definitely recommended for Calc 1
A. May is a great professor for those who want to learn the material and be challenged. His test problems are a little harder than most professions at SCC but he focuses on that he tests on which makes getting a grades in his class average. In my opinion best math instructor at SCC.
Greatest math teacher in the world. Weekly quizzes, 4 tests and a cumulative final exam, homework is not collected. This class is not easy, but if you're really serious about your education, take professor may! He will make you work hard for your grade. But trust me,he will prepare you for Precal. I will definitely try to take Calc 1 with him.
I was definitely not excited for this class in the beginning. But boy did Professor change my thoughts. I never liked math and I am terrible at it. But when you have a professor who is passionate about what he teaches, you will come to enjoy the class. Hwk is not checked BUT is necessary to pass quizzes and exams. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
I love Professor May's classes. He is always willing to help (he even begs on his knees for questions in class) and is very dedicated to getting his students to understand the material. If you ever don't understand a concept, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! you can sit outside his office and ask questions until you understand!
Alex made STATS something doable rather than something to fear. Homework is not collected, but you are better off if you come to class because you'll only be tested on what is covered in class. He was great!
2nd time taking him, my other review was on 12/19/2014. Homework isn't collected but there is a quiz every Friday straight from the homework. Total of 3 exams, plus a final. His exams weren't difficult, but they were fairly challenging. Do the homework, do extra problems, use office hours and you'll be fine. I put in a lot of work for a B.
He is there to answer questions. If you do not pass the class, you did not ask enough questions to help you pass. Each class you learn something new so you must go and you live off the book. Must get!
He is the best math professor I have had in my entire life. Literally begs for questions and makes you feel so comfortable. He's funny, animated, and an overall nice guy. He made stats even enjoyable. TAKE HIM FOR STATS!!!!! :) He's awesome. HW is not due, but quizzes/exams are based on them. He also gives you notes to fill in the blank (SO NICE)!!
THIS IS YOUR MAN FOR STATS300!! He is the most patient prof and begs for his students to interact and talk to him and ask questions. He loves to help is good guy
Professor May is one of the most charismatic and dedicated educators I've encountered! He always put concepts in context making the material accessible and dare I say it, fun. Though homework was not collected, completing it was key to acing all the exams.
Professor May is a great teacher. He is engaging, always ready to answer any questions or spend extra time on something you don't get in class. Definitely would take him again.
i've had the pleasure of being his student 2 times now for MATH300 and STATS300. hands down one of the greatest math professors on this campus. his motto in class is "MATH IS FUN" and he truly lives up to that! he's always more than willing to clarify if you're confused. utilize the help he offers and you're bound to have a fun semester with him.
Not the greastest experience with his class. His lecturs are very long and not very clear. All his exams are based on the homework. This is my second time failing a math class and he was not very helpful. If you struggle with math like I do do not take him as a professor.
You are free to tell non offensive jokes because that's what he says at the beginning of every class. Quizzes and tests are all based on homework so if you failed the first test then that's ok you got plenty more chances. The final is comprehensive so be ready. Feel free to ask questions and don't be shy. He is a great professor to take.
Prof May is one of the best math professors at Sac City. Prof May really cares about his students and teaches very clearly and on a level any student can understand. He makes it clear what you need to know for upcoming tests, and has good study guides. Most of your grade is dependent on quizzes and tests, so be wary if you are bad at testing.
If you're looking for a math professor who's got good energy and is straightforward with his assignments, I highly recommend you take him! He goes off on tangents every now and then but never for too long. He always says, "I grade your work like an essay." Homework is fair and ungraded. Quiz every Friday. (: Super helpful with any questions!
Had him for about two weeks and he was a good teacher. Somewhat boring lectures though. He did leave after 2 weeks and never saw him again and he gave no warning that he was leaving except on his very last day. Had a long term sub that had never taught before.
great professor, highly recommened. his class is easy and hee explains everything clearly. he's a funny guy too
Great guy. Must do homework to pass quizzes and tests. Do ALL homework problems and you won't be surprised by anything. Tests are tough. Ask questions or he will be sad. Class is all business, not a minute wasted.
I really enjoyed this professor, he made a 9 am math class entertaining.
Great professor, explains very well , always answers your questions clear. All exams based on homework , what makes it very easy to prepare , always tells what chapters will be on a quiz . Passionate about his major in a good way .
I had him for my math 120 class and he didn't let us use calculators. He didn't use canvas either which made life harder and his teaching was hard to follow. He was funny and nice but i would not take his class again.
Not much to say, precal is difficult so make sure you do the hw . His tests are tricky and worth a big portion of your grade. Only drops lowest quiz score. Study guide are slightly helpful but expect a few curve balls during the actual test. Be prepared to work
Good Guy and a decent professor. Grading Rubric: 20% for each of the 3 exams. 30% for the final. 10% for quizzes. Drops lowest quiz score. Doesnt curve, doesnt replace lowest score with final. Do ALL the homework problems and you wont be surprised, but his exams are tough. He talks pretty fast and explanations are hit or miss but mostly clear.
Great professor! It can feel a little intimidating because he talks so fast, but he's super helpful when you ask him to elaborate more on certain problems and will slow down. Although I only got a C in the class, he really prepared me for my calc 2 class that I'm taking at ARC compared to my other classmates who don't seem as ready for the course.
If you do the assigned homework you will pass with at least a C. He lectures really well. Very clear on all aspects of the material. One of the best professors on SCC campus. I took him 2 semesters in a row. If I could I would take him for all my math classes. All the negative ratings about him are by people who didn't want to do the homework. :)
NO CALCULATORS. No idea why he was so highly rated and recommended. Lectures too fast to follow, literally as fast as he can write. Entire grade based on 3 exams plus the final, and 10% from a quiz given every week. I learned nothing at all from lectures and self taught. His exams had ridiculous questions often involving ln and e. AVOID if possible
Professor May is by far the best math professor I ever had. He makes the lecture and the material as easy to understand as possible, he always takes questions and cares about your learning and understanding of the material. Even though the homework is not mandatory, I highly suggest doing the assigned homework for every day to get an easy A.
Exams is hard and He will not drop the low exam.
Beware no calculators and study guides are NOT helpful or specific at all. He won't tell you ahead of time what is on the test, and there are quizzes weekly. Homework isn't mandatory but you won't pass if you don't do it. Assigns an impossible amount of homework problems and expects you to know it all. As a person he's nice but talks really fast.
He is awesome. If you want to succeed in his class and put in good effort, you will.
He is a nice guy. Your lectures and tests are during zoom. He does a pretty good job at covering all of the info during the lecture, I barely did any of the homework(which isn't graded). It was difficult at first because your grade is all tests and quizzes and he had a few quizzes. Do good on the first few quizzes or they will wreck your grade.
Professor May was a very good math teacher. If you do all your homework assigned, even though it isn't mandatory, you will get easy A's on the quizzes. He also makes it quite clear what will be on the exams and what won't, and he gives out practice exams too. Also, he loved being asked questions, so that really helped me out.
Textbook is needed, be prepared to do all assigned homework and you will not be surprised by any problems in test, quiz and exam. In fact I did not spend too much time on this class but I still do all HW and get an A luckly since my first exam is a C. If you do all HW and review all concepts every day, you should be fine to get an A, at least a B.
He was very organized and clear about what he wanted. He was a great lecturer and if you showed up to classes, you knew EXACTLY what to expect on his quizzes and tests. Hes pretty understanding and just overall a pretty chill professor. Great for first years
