A loving guy. Make sure you talk a lot in class, and it's an easy A. HINT: He loves papers related to sex.
Lord- This man was devoid of much personality when I had his class. He was okay, but I wouldn't take him again.
This man is ridiculous. He wants a paper to be about 4 pages on nothing but an anaylsis of one damn paragraph. I advise NOT to take him.
One of the few professors I had at UNF that was able to balance the rigors of scholarship with organic class discussion. Took three classes with him, and all were great.
Excellent reading selections. He is a great teacher if you take the time to talk with him.
Good Selections. Talk in his class.
A brilliant man! Fascinating classes and opportunities to read engaging literature. Talk in class! Tough papers, but he is willing to pre-read and advise. Engaging personality, excellent sense of humor. One of the best you'll ever take.
He is an okay teacher - somewhat boring. He likes to hear himself speak and sometimes it's hard to stay awake. Talk in class and ask for help and you'll do fine.
Yes, talk in class. I did a paper relating to sex, and GOT an A in his class.
I would follow this man to the ends of the earth. I have taken every possible class I could with him, and found myself enriched every single time I enrolled for one of his courses. He is amazing. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. (smile)
took class on serial killers, as far as lit classes go it was cool, cool teacher, a lot of reading and papers but it was the best lit class unf had. talk in his class a lot. he is extremely helpful
His Lit classes are very insightful. Many think he talks just to hear himself, but he actually just knows so much about literature he cant help it. A lot of papers and reading, but if you talk in class you will do fine. Very intelligent guy.
Very good teacher. LIsten to him in class and you'll know what to write about in your papers. Better be ready to read boring/wierd stuff because he has quizzes. Participate in discusions and do the 4 1000 words papers he assigns and you'll be alright
one the best
Had him for Literary Interpretation. He has a fabulous sense of humor and has an incredible handle on the subject matter. He even quoted Ludacris as one of his "favorite contemporary philosophers". Papers are challenging but he'll check your rought drafts. Too bad Menocal is married!:-)
If there is one professor to take at UNF this is the one. You will learn a great deal about theory and read contemporary literature. I feel much more prepared to enter the current discussion in literature today after taking his class. He is not easy but worth it.
Talk alot in his class and do all the papers and you'll be fine. I messed up on the first paper in his class (F) and he still passed me with a C so I am stoked on him. He is a nice guy.
I love the list of books he picks for this class! They are interesting, thought provoking and give lots of material to cover the theories in. I highly recommend this class. He is easy going and witty, great sense of humor!
He is a funny/talented man. I learned a lot in this course. I hated most of the books, but he is a genius. I may not of received a high grade, but I learned more in his class than all the others combined. I will take him again in the fall, he promotes higher thinking
By far he is my favorite Proffesor in my college experience. The man is brilliant, witty, thought provoking and has an extraordinary sense of humor. The papers can be tuff if you let them; the key is originality; have fun with it. Challenge youself, read something "different", it's worth it.
He is by far the best teacher I have ever had in my college career and probably ever will. He is very insightful, extremely helpful and knowledgable. He definately does have a great sense as well-he's an awesome person all the way around..wish all college professors were like him!! :)
Books kind of sucked, a little to high brow for me, or maybe I am an idiot. I love him, he stretched my mind. I felt smarter listening to him. I love the way his mind works. The man is a genius and has a razor sharp wit. I am taking him again
So fresh and takes different interpretive approaches. Super duper nice person. Great teacher to talk to and he takes feedback on the books seriously. Grades harder than some profs, but only because he expects a lot. Be creative and talk in class, you'll do well.

One heck of an English Prof!
He is the most amazing professor I've had. He is brilliant and thought provoking. He makes ideas come alive.
Always explains everything about books that is relevant. Not a LOT of reading, but have to keep up because of quizzes. Very interesting and has a sense of humor.
He's great. He's very helpful with ideas and can turn any crappy thesis into the pulitzer. He's really big on participation in class, so raise your hand and speak up! I liked him so much I made sure I'd get him again for Lit 2932!
Makes my brain hurt but in a good way...I am taking him again in the spring but this time I will speak up in class !
He is an awesome professor! I would take him over and over again...and would refer him to anyone looking to stay interested in english. Alot of quizzes but students get to decide the questions so you can make them as easy as you want.
Awesome - intelligent, witty, makes the work interesting, and he's a cutie!
Amazing professor! Made me want to go for my Ph.D. If you put the effort in, his classes will stun you.
I didnt know what to expect taking his class. Theres pretty much a quiz every class, but you can pick and choose the questions. He gets very iritated if you dont read. He's a really hard grader when it comes to essays, so if essay writing isnt your thing I wouldnt take him.

Was a good prof, willing to help and quizes were quite easy being that the stuydnets made all the questions. Just make sure to talk in class!
Overall he's a great teacher. You use all the books that you buy the only thing is that he has a class participation policy. The quizzes are ok because you get to pick the questions. You are also allotted 4 absenses so use wisely!
the best teacher ever! i love his class. he's really really good at what he does. There are quizzes almost every day, but the class picks them. Class participation is easy, all u have to do is say one word. He's very helpful with papers and even rewrites sentences for you. AWESOME teacher!
Not that there is much negativity for Menocal as is, but for those of you who may from time to time forget why it is you chose English as your major, any of his classes should easily remind you. He's extremely insightful, and friendly, and although may not seem like it in the classroom, can be very helpful outside of class. Do yourself a favor.
The best english professor at UNF hands down. Lectures can seem a little repetitive at times but always interesting subjects and always relevant. Put in a little bit of work and you will reap the rewards. If you are an english major and don't take one of his classes, you've missed out.
Hottest teacher i've ever had, extremely challenging, and very helpful. i love him!
Alex was an inspiration.
If you are an English major, and you do not take Menocal, you are missing out. His classes are interesting and he is very insightful. Go to class or you miss out on lecture, and points. Be creative on your papers! Do the work for this class, and you will really learn somthing.
I cannot say enough about Alex Menocal. Take his class or you are missing out. You will be required to read and apply some theory but that's why you are an ENGLISH MAJOR. 5 to 7 books a class, usually 2 short papers and 1 long. Easy daily quizes. Best English classes around UNF - hands down.
this is my 3rd time taking menocal and i'm a huge fan! his classes are clearly structered, he's very helpful and respectful of students. he's brilliant and funny. i wish i could take him again in the spring, but have taken all he teaches. every class is a short, easy quiz (if you read) and discussion. 2 absences allowed. 2/3 papers. love him!!!
AWESOME PROFESSORRRRR! Lets class out early somtimes, rarely cancels, lectures are kind of boring, but if you go you get credit for speaking. Quizzes everyday BUT they are only 3 questions and you get to pick them. The novels he chooses are REALLY good! MENOCAL IS THE MAN!
Awesome guy, I am taking him for the third time in the spring! Easy class, great lectures, he really ,makes you think and analyze the text in a new way. Weird texts, but really cool! 3 papers and reg quizzes but simple, must say somethiin at least once for participation, can be anything, and he is pretty easy going.
Highly recommend taking Menocal. Based on these ratings, he may be a liiiiitle over rated. But for the most part, I agree with everyone else. Recommended!
THe best english professor i have ever had, i learned so much, he challenged me to think and be a better writer, i am so thrilled about his class, i cant wait to take him again, wonderful guy, very helpful and kind, seems intimidating because he is so intelligent but is a wonderful guy, he really helped me succeed in his class, take him he's awesom
I've read all the comments, and yes it's true. Menocal is very nice. But oh my God! I fall asleep in his class. He's so dull and monotone. He means well but for a 3 hour class, I dream of my bed. He puts me to sleep. No inspiration. Class participation required but he talks so much you can't get a word in. I don't know. Your choice. Easy quizzes.

He is a wonderful professor. When I needed help he responded quickly. He was always offering aid and always pushed for our success. The class was extremely interesting and he offers new insight on everything.
Depending upon your level of intelligence, this class can be either a good thing or a bad thing. He made the class harder than it needed to be. He pushed me and pushed me with my papers (which I usually get A's on no problem) until I wanted to die because I could not get an A on even one. He's a good professor, but sometimes I just wanted to leave.
amazing teacher
Please do yourself a favor and never take a class from this man. I had a B average and always attended class when spending weeks on my final paper he failed me for plagerism...which i did not do. im an A B student and have never had such a horrible teacher. Hes very hard and expects a lot from his students. Seriously...dont take this class!
Great teacher. Hard, however you have to realize this is college not high school. Menocal is a normal English professor who should teach a more complicated English class. since he teaches an introduction to literature course most of his students are not English majors. I recommmend this teacher if you want to pursue a degree in writing.
Prof Menocal is an awesome professor. His ability to convey intricate and complex ideas to his students is commendable. Me personally, I really felt we think the same, but by his popularity this is shared by a lot of students. Some of the ideas other professors only reference, or talk about in ambiguous terms Menocal explains and grounds.
Excellent teacher! He assigns difficult assignments sometimes, but he definitely is more than willing to help students understand exactly what he expects from them. He really helped me improve my writing skills in one semester. The daily quizzes are easy and his attendance policy is pretty lax, I definitely recommend taking him for any Lit class!!
Dr. Menocal is brilliant. He helps students analyze books in many different ways. He is extremely helpful with writing papers.
I like this professor a lot! His class is a little boring and he tends to go into detail about little things that are not all that important, but hes very smart. The only downside to this class is that your grade is based on how much you participate in class so if you don't like to participate in class discussions, your SOL. Take this class!
Excellent professor! He will help you develop writing skills and encourage critical thinking. It all comes with hard work though
ATTENDANCE MANDATORY. You have about 6 papers and a few easy quizes. Obsessive about participation! Pretty dull. Talk as much as you can even if it doesnt make sense, he just likes it when people pay attention. If you suck up to him he will love you! He is a pretty harsh grader, I ended up with a B- after making an A- in College Writing.
One of the better learning experiences. I was lucky to have taken him for an experimental literature class, so his shortcomings didn't matter to me. He definitely will encourage critical thinking skills and deeply involve you with the literature. His lectures are usually very precise and focused on the texts. participate and your grades will improv
One textbook, four or five novels. Reading intensive, but the novels are interesting and not what you would normally expect in a lit. class. Dr. Menocal lectures for most of the period but gives bonus points for participation, so say SOMETHING. Funny, into pop-culture, very helpful, quick to respond to email communication.
Very good teacher. I wish more teachers were like him. Very fair, explains clearly. Wants the students to participate, not only to give points, but also to make sure the students understand his material. you HAVE to read. Shows that he cares about any questions a student has. Awesome teacher!!
My favorite professor. I thought the class was extremely easy but I am an English major. Most struggled, but if you read and can write an ok paper i would deff. take him because he is amazing. I learned soooo much in his class. Probably the only person who got an A so you may want to take that into consideration.
My very favorite.I've taken several classes with him.I've never found his class especially difficult (challenging, but not hard) and if you're having trouble, he goes the extra mile to help. Attendance and participation are important. If you put in the effort, any class with him is very rewarding.
I personally liked him. He is big on attendance and is decent in his work amounts. I felt that he was knowledgeable in what he had to teach. The only downfall is that he has a hard time explaining the material to you. He is helpful if he sees you putting effort. Lastly he seems so serious, but his occasional joke tells you otherwise.
Attendance is absolutely mandatory (you only get a few freebies)... and don't leave class early. It's a lot of work to get a good grade in this class, but if you go to him for help, he will do everything he can to assist you. Boring lectures, but as a person he's really nice and not as serious as he first seems.
One of the best professors Ive had. There is a good amount of work that needs to be done in his class but its not hard. He spaces it out so your not over loaded with work. With any lit class there are papers due, but you can revise them and get a higher grade. He is actually pretty cool, and always has time to help his students
Prof. Menocal is one of my favorite English teachers i have had. He is more than clear with instruction when it comes to paper writing. He is also very lenient when it comes to paper deadlines. You can ask for an extension at least 4 days prior and he will give you one no questions asked. He is also really interesting to listen to. LOVED this class
He's highly knowledgeable in english- literature esp. -so he expects a lot from students' writings even if it's only a gen ed course. He is willing to help if you have any doubts. There are a lot of assignments and a of couple big papers. If english is not your forté, don't take him unless you're up for the challenge.
I hate lit interpretation. Menocal is the first professor I've ever had who managed to make it interesting enough for me to feel engaged and like we weren't just making stuff up. I can't recommend this guy enough. Show up, pay attention (his lectures are good), and learn how to write papers the way he likes. If you try at all you should do well.
Just do the papers the way he tells you, go to class and participate in the lectures and you'll do fine.
Professor Menocal is a highly intelligent man. He's very welcoming to everyone's interpretation of the text that is being discussed. READ the assigned readings! If you need help with the papers, he's more than willing to help you. I was worried about this class because it is one of the "core classes" for my degree, but I loved it!
I LOVED him! I am taking him right now and he is extremely helpful! Always responsive to emails, and always available to meet. He is willing to work with you if you are having trouble. He is really sweet, and also very nice! TAKE HIM!!
Menocal is a very nice professor, his class is tough, you need to keep update on the readings because he don't quiz you on the readings. I really enjoyed how he opened up the classes for students to discuss what was read. Only 3 papers and he's really nice when it comes to grading and will work with you.
NOT an easy A. You will read four novels over the course of the semester and write three papers relating the novel to the topics discussed. the topics are very lengthy and complex. Menocal is VERY friendly and helpful (always available for office hours). *Don't be discouraged, read, go to class, take notes, ask for help*
MENOCAL IS THE BEST! I have taken multiple classes with him. Some may find him boring but he is easy going and a laid bak person. He may seem shy but if you go to his office he will go over every detail of your papers if you want. He explains exactly what he is looking for. You must read but it is only for your benefit. You will gain a lot from him
He's the toughest, most intimidating professor I've taken but also among the best, fairest, and most engaging. He'll meet with you and give you detailed feedback on your papers BEFORE you submit them. He makes every effort to help you understand the concepts of the course and succeed, but you'll only do well if you actually succeed. Very fair.
He's very good at explaining the concepts but you definitely need to read BR a couple of times before class. Take lots of notes and be sure to participate. What's also great is that he'll give you an extension on every paper except the last if you ask for it. Even if you don't think you need it go ahead and get it anyway. I highly recommend him.
Mr. Menocal is a great listener to his students. He's extremely professional but also friendly. The concepts are sometimes difficult to understand, but he does a good job explaining and answering questions. The essays are long and difficult. You WILL fall behind if you don't read. CLASS PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED. DON'T take if you're very shy.
Menocal is amazing! I become a better writer with every class of his I take. The material isn't easy, but he does such a great job of teaching it. He is really helpful and approachable. He genuinely cares about his students: what they think, if they're learning, and if they're succeeding. He is fantastic!
Menocal is a great professor! Don't take Approaches to Literary Interpretation if you are looking for an easy A. You will work hard in any class you take with him but its worth it because you learn so much. You can tell he is very intelligent and clearly enjoys what he does. I would definitely recommend him!
Go to his office hours and talk to him. Going to class, he may not be clear on what he expects. He's a good guy. I underestimated the difficulty of his quizzes and flunked the midterm. However, I started to study and ANNOTATE the readings which helped me get over 100 on recent quizzes. Do talk to him, that is half the battle.
Hardest class I've ever taken. He expects all of his students to have a background in film. Do not take to this class if your trying to satisfy a general education requirement.
Professor Menocal is a great Professor. The work load was tough, its not difficult, just heavy. Very, very intelligent person and really knows his stuff. Don't miss class and participate.
Attendance mandatory. Very hard grader. Incredibly boring lectures. Wouldn't take again because of how boring the entire class was. Numerous papers and SO much course material to do outside of class. Avoid.
Incredibly boring and horrible about feedback, you won't know your grade on anything or in the class until the end of the semester when it's submitted. You could think you have an A in the class but you actually have an F because that's how much he communicates
I am a person who enjoys the subject of reading and English, and yet I did not enjoy this class. Menocal was boring, in my opinion, makes your participate in class for a grade, and tries to push his interests onto you. I definitely would not take him again.
Menocal is a tough grader, but he is very accessible and very willing to help you and give good feedback during office hours. Utilizing office hours frequently is the best way to get a good grade in this class. Be prepared to participate in the conversation at least once every class. If you skip class a lot do not take this course.
He was average. Pretty fair grader on essays but a lot of busy work outside of class. Lectures were ehhh. The one thing I did not like at all was how he gives a participation based off if you speak aloud in class, and if you don't speak he gives you a zero each class you don't speak aloud. Rate 6/10.
Three projects throughout the semester that accumulate to 15% of your grade each. Very strict grader and the lectures weren't very helpful for me.
This is the class that you do every single assignment out of the classroom. What you discuss in class is basically useless. The best part is attendance is mandatory. Lectures are beyond boring. Menocal is a very tough grader. I am someone who loves English and writing but menocal basically ruins it. Would not recommend.
He's a good professor, just very boring. The class is mandatory and I know some ENC 1143 teachers try to make their classes fun but he goes directly from the guidelines and it is just not a fun class at all. You get three days to miss and then attendance becomes mandatory. Also get ready to do a lot of reading and responses.
Professor Menocal is one of the most caring professors I have had at UNF. He loves what he teaches, and he eagerly helps students in and out of class time. If you take his class seriously, then you will leave as a better reader and writer. He is also delightfully quirky!
Menocal is sweet and caring, as well as highly intelligent on the course's subject matter. Don't take Approaches to Literary Interpretation for an easy-A. This was one of the most rewarding classes I've taken at UNF as an English major. Speak up in class and give your input, even if it's just a question, he will always have insight to share.
He was an okay professor. Assignment weren't too difficult. Class was very boring. He was very repetitive about everything. He was always available to help students in and out of class. We used the book that was required for just about every assignment so you have to get it. We were allowed 6 free skips before it started to count against your grade
Professor Menocal is very knowledgable about algorithms and you will be too once this class is over. He's really caring so ask for his help early in the semester if you're struggling.
Professor Menocal is one of the best professors that I have had at UNF. He is very insightful and is an extremely caring professor. He is always available outside of class time and is great at helping with revisions. You are allowed to miss up to 4 classes which is more than most professors. He allows extensions for work and is very understanding.
We read 3 short stories and one novel. Class is lecture and discussion-heavy, with a few discussion posts and 3 essays. The feedback he provides on the essays is most helpful. He is a tough grader but wants his students to become better writers and his feedback helps achieve that for those who put in the effort.
Menocal is a very sweet, mellow guy. Took his class online, attendance mandatory. He replied to emails quickly, was very accessible. But he assigned SO many articles to read, and a LOT of long, complex essays. My essays were all about 8 pages or more. He is the toughest grader I have ever seen. Dont take him if you dont want to write endlessly
Most boring professor I've ever been unfortunate enough to listen to. You can get a good enough grade on all essays without listening to his lectures because he will spend the entire class talking about very minor factors that you may or may not need to implement. Don't ask him questions because he'll get to the answer after 20 minutes of talking.
Professor Menocal cares very much but is too much of a critic. The two projects in class weigh very heavy! Long lectures and mandatory attendance. A Harsh and a late grader, he graded Project 1 over a month after the due date. Very good about meeting for office hours and hearing out issues, but will lecture as opposed to constructive critiquing.
Super sweet guy but extremely boring lectures. Work load wasn't bad at all but took a lot of energy just to force myself to go to this class. He is very nice, accessible outside of class, and genuinely seems to care about his students but I would not take him again. Takes a long time to grade papers and is a tough grader.
Professor Menocal is a nice man but a terrible teacher. He's an unnecessarily harsh grader and his feedback on papers doesn't make any sense. Attendance is mandatory so you can't get out of his boring lectures where he rants about a single topic for 30 minutes straight. He'd fair better teaching an online class that doesn't have lectures. Be warned
Professor Menocal is easily the most unnecessary hard grader I've had a UNF. He is very incompetent and difficult to work with. He does not allow late work, and was overall very stressful.
Nice guy, very chill, but he talks way too much and a handful of the assignments are kinda unnecessary. This class puts me to sleep so unless you're an avid caffeine drinker or don't get bored easily, I would avoid taking him.
Many people discussed how boring his lectures are. At the end of the day, my grades depend entirely on how much I enjoy a class. I hated his class, I despised his class. It is ENC 1143, so why the hell is the topic more on nutrition than English. Its like his is a wannabe nutritionist or just chose the most boring topic imaginable.
This class is so boring. You don't need to be in class to do the assignments. His lectures are based on what he posts on Canvas. I never paid attention in his class and still got a good grade. I never watched the videos he told me to watch. I would simply just write all of the essays he made us write. Take this class online its a waste of time.
personally did not like his lecture format and was just a really boring class. his grading is very unclear and not helpfull.
Lectures are very very boring, grades papers very harshly, explains things unclear
Lectures can be quite boring, but Professor Menocal is a caring instructor. The workload is manageable, though grading can be harsh and slow. To succeed, engage with the material, and consider using helpful study tools like unstuck ai alongside the required resources.
Overall, he is a good professor, but his lectures can get boring as he repeats himself over, or it could take a while to get the point. He is very knowledgeable and was helpful when it came to in-class feedback and questions. Would take him again for another English course.
Come on you reds. iykyk
soft voice+softspoken personality+rambling= class is a cure for insomnia a kind man who will answer any question you have in a way where he leads you to the question instead of spoonfeeding which i respect. but just how utterly boring of a lecturer he was is my lasting memory of him. dont think i learned a thing
This professor was one of the worst teachers I think I have ever worked with. His lectures are unbelievably boring and he falls asleep in class, specifically when watching a movie. READ THE SYLLABUS. After the first 2 months he will start assigning you a quiz every single class and the weight on these quizzes are HEAVY, and no make ups either.
Most of his classes are speaking on whatever story we're currently reading. His classes are super boring and attendance is mandatory. His classes get really repetitive over time even though the topics have a lot of potential to be interesting. Wouldn't take this class again just on sheer boredom. Not a hard class and he's a cool old man.
Took this class and based off his introduction, I thought this was going to be the most interesting class I was going to have that semester. He's a really nice guy but his class is extremely boring and very small frivolous mistakes on your paper will earn you a low grade for that assignment. Very difficult to get excused absence.
I feel bad writing such a poor review because he really is such a sweet guy, but when strictly speaking about his class and teaching style, it is nothing short of miserable. Attending lecture every week feels like the longest 3 hours of your life. The course work is repetitive and could be interesting if HE was interesting. Take this class online.
He helped me write certain parts of my essay, then he marked them off because he didn't deem them good enough. If he doesn't like you, he will do everything in his power to make this class difficult.
Failed to give sources for half the essays assigned throughout the semester which culminated in a very stressful week before finals where I had to find new sources because my old ones were apparently not good enough. I hate having to find my own sources.
This guy is ridiculous. Grading scale is atrocious. Homework makes no sense. He is so quiet and boring, unclear on every aspect of the course, will humiliate you in front of the whole class, and not approachable. He is literally the worst teacher I've had in my life. I can't think of one single redeeming quality. I hope I never see him again.
You could follow the rubric 100% and still will receive tedious feedback on what you “did wrong”. That is for every single assignment. The reading quizzes will hurt you immensely if you don't read the passage 5 times. The final was absurd, in reality there shouldn't be a wrong answer yet he will give an F. Even w/ strong argument
Dr Menocal is a great professor but very intense. He grades tough and his assignments are not a cakewalk. But, he does provide excellent feedback and I feel like a better English major after having taken his class. Definitely recommend.
